History of Astondoa Yachts

The shipyard was founded in 1916 by Jesús Astondoa Martínez, and has remained primarily a family-run business ever since. By embracing technological advances in the yachting industry, Astondoa gracefully transitioned from the wooden yacht era to become one of Europe’s leading composite motor yacht builders.

Notable Astondoa Superyachts

Astondoa’s entry into the superyacht echelons came with the 2007 launch of the 45.80m custom, steel-hulled Motor Yacht Samurai One , followed by the 45.80m ex- Amaranta P (now Panakeia ), in 2008. Both superyachts feature interiors by Cristiano Gatto Design and exterior styling by Astondoa .

Headquartered in Santa Pola, the Astondoa Group maintains four other production facilities throughout Spain, at Gallarta (Vizcaya), La Unión (Murcia), Vigo (Galicia) and Almansa (Albacete). Astondoa’s passion for creating and building yachts began in 1916, with the work of Jesús Astondoa Martínez. Three generations at the service of the recreational sailing sector and over 90 years of accumulated experience guarantee a commitment to technology, design and innovation – all elements which have been fundamental to the group’s current strength.

Astondoa is represented by our modern, elegant 143-foot mega yacht. Christened the “Samurai One”, this is a craft of advanced engineering design built in 2007 and refitted in 2011 with a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. Manufactured at the Vigo boatyard, this undoubtedly represents Astondoa’s entrance into the universe of large yachts.

Astondoa offers one of the most extensive ranges on the market and builds boats ranging from 40 to 200 feet in length. A variety of models and services to satisfy all requirements.

Astondoa’s central headquarters are in Santa Pola, a prime location overlooking the sea and only 10 minutes from Alicante International Airport. Covering an area of over 30,000m2, it has facilities for the construction of yachts up to 122 feet in length.

Astondoa also owns other facilities totalling 70,000m2, where highly specialised work is carried out by more than 500 people, who make up one of the company’s greatest assets: its human capital.

ASTONDOA TOP-DECK

Astondoa’s newest line, Top-Deck extending from 51 to 63 feet with a project to expand to a 120-foot unit, is proof of the brand’s pledge to modernity, luxury, design, comfort and functionality. The first model of the series, Astondoa 63 Top Deck, made its public debut at the 2012 Miami International Boat Show in the United States. It also gathered great reviews at the Cannes Boat Show in France during the month of September 2013.

The yacht’s elegant lines and innovative use of forms, materials and textures, give this model an attractive casual design and intelligent performance. The yacht, designed by Luiz de Basto, was created with fun and enjoyment in mind. It comes with Jet Ski, mini-submarine, water slides, Jacuzzi, outdoor terraces and comfortable lounges.

The 63 Top Deck is distinctive in many ways, and the company plans to include a flybridge in the deluxe model. On the other hand, a side exit next to the spacious storage space for all kind of special toys, make this design unique and very functional

Astondoa: the strength of a family shipyard passed on from generation to generation

The brothers Jesús and José Astondoa Martínez started building boats in a small workshop, thus marking the beginning of the history of the ASTONDOA shipyard in 1916 in Portugalete, Spain.

However, during the Spanish Civil War, the activity was suspended.

Afterwards, Jesús Astondoa turned to the construction of fishing and pleasure boats.

In 1944, his son Jesús Astondoa Santamaría joined the family business and soon took over the shipyard. The skill and quality of Astondoa’s wooden boats, as well as their high quality finishings, allowed the shipyard to gain national recognition.

After establishing the company on the east coast of Spain, the third generation of the Astondoa family joined the shipyard. In particular, the children of Jesús Astondoa Santamaría.

Astondoa’s technical revolution: from wood to glass fiber reinforced polyester resin

The 1980s marked a milestone in the history of the shipyard. Astondoa decided to move away from its traditional methods of producing wooden boats. As a result, the shipyard began building boats out of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin.

With this transition to more innovative production materials and elegant design, Astondoa consolidates its position as a leading shipyard in Europe.

Astondoa also participates in numerous international boat shows. As a result, the yard has won several awards for the quality of its boats.

The wide range of Astondoa boats

Astondoa builds a variety of fiberglass reinforced polyester resin boats. Models range from 40 feet to yachts over 120 feet. In addition, the megayacht range includes boats up to 45 m long with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures.

Spacious – Outside and In

Compact does not mean cramped. The walk-around teak decks offer easy passage around the entire perimeter. The helm station covers the captain and two passengers and likewise offers shade to the aft-facing bench (with a slide-out cooler) on the rear deck. A table is conveniently placed between the aft-facing bench and a forward-facing one—which can also convert into a full deck lounge. The bench backrest joins with the backrest of a luxurious aft deck 3-person sun pad that opens to the teak swim platform. That lounge opens to reveal a wide garage to carry water toys and enable engine access—just another example of Astondoa’s creative use of space. Another sun pad on the bow faces a teak bow seat that also houses docking gear beneath. Storage is also available under the soft, synthetic leather seating and in various compartments tucked into the sturdy, hand-built cabinetry.

Technology & Features

The helm is outfitted with top-quality navigation and electronics, a leather steering wheel, optional bow thruster, optional joystick controls, a sound system that make entertainment a priority and a windshield that protects both passengers and equipment from the elements.

Behind the helm is an outdoor galley with a grill, refrigerator, and sink, ideal for entertaining, plus a hatch for access to the surprisingly large cabin below.

The nearly 220-gallon fuel tank provides a 200-nautical mile range and a 52-gallon water tank keeps everyone cool, clean and comfortable. We come closer....

The boat is 2010. The gelcoat cracks are everywhere. Cost Euro 2M+ back then in 2010 when the contract was signed.

I know the cracks are very annoying, but other than them, how is the boat? Are you having other problems or is that it? Are there issues beyond those you are showing?

Sorry, gentlemen, the repeated pictures was a mistake/UI issue. I have seen the cracked gelcoat before, but this is too much, for the boat which is just 5 years old. We have asked the independent contractor for a quote in order to repair the gelcoat, and the amount is .......exorbitant.

Other than that, the boat and the equipment are quite well, however the engine hours are just 400 approx.

I wouldn't just fix the cracks, I'd just awlgrip the entire hull, it should be less than $30k. Then you don't need to pay to wax the hull, just wash it with Awlwash

Thanks for the hint, Capt J, however, if we decide to awlgrip the entire hull (and superstructure also, I believe) -we will need to scrape off the existing paint, right? Less than 30K sounds reassuring, however we need to get and compare the quotes from the service guys. The first shipyard to respond rolled out Euro 60K....

Probably just sand it down really good, fill-in/fix the cracks, use the right primer and paint.....your painter will recommend what to do. The hull itself is about $30k, the entire boat including the hull probably around $100k here in the U.S., it looks like you have gelcoat and not paint, but again impossible to tell without seeing it in person.

The stress cracks shown beneath the teak strip appear to be from impact, meaning the underlying laminate could be sacrificed. If you have gelcoat cracks in areas not exposed to impact, they are probable signs of structural flexing.

I am having my boat painted as we speak. My yacht had a gelcoat problem from the manufacturer, and its purely a cosmetic issue. It looks awful, but its cosmetic. If your yacht is gelcoat, then you will have to sand it down (removing all of it isn't necessary), prime it with a quality primer that will fill what remains of any small spider cracks (I used epoxy barrier coat) and then 2-3 coats of awl grip to finish it off. For your size boat, $30k for the topsides is a steal. My boat is 50ft. and I am paying around $30k for the topsides. I received quotes of up to $85,000 for the same work. I would talk to a few yards, get some examples of the work that they have done, talk to customers, and settle on a price and TIME (getting it done in an agreed upon tome is a big issue as well...) Best of Luck, hopefully nothing structural is going on with the yacht.

I was doing a consultancy to a client and we saw some misused 15-16 meters sports yachts. Quotes where always in the 20,000 EUROS or upward for hull, and more or less same for upper structure.

Sooooo, after that, Jesús Astondoa decided to focus on building fishing and recreational boats. In 1944 —Jesús Astondoa Santamaría joined the family business and the shipyard became his baby soon after. Success was achieved when the shipyard began to gain national recognition from Astondoa’s quality-built wooden boats and top-grade finishes.

The company spread over to Spain’s east coast and Jesús Astondoa Santamaría’s children became the third generation of the family to also join the shipyard. Step ahead to the early 1980s, and we see Astondoa moving away from the more traditional wooden production methods as they strike gold by offering the boats in polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass. How excited their team must have been that her up to date production techniques combined with each yacht’s exquisite design and bolstered by Astondoa’s position as a leading builder, make for a winning combination.

The Astondoa Group grew to more than 500 employees and boasts of the largest range of yachts in their fleet. What exactly do they build? They go from 40 ft open boats to polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass yachts over 120 ft.

In the span of 100 years, Astilleros Astondoa has more than 3,000 vessels - bravo to them for this wonderful productive time. They will remain at the helms of the shipyard.

We are asked—-where are they based? Well… Astilleros Astondoa sits on the seafront of Santa Pola, Spain which is 10-minutes from Alicante’s international airport. The shipyard measures in at over 323,000 sq. ft with a focus on the production of yachts 122 ft. and longer.

The 34.56m/113'5" motor yacht 'Kassandra' (ex. Nord Star) was built by Timmerman Yachts in the Russian Federation at their Moscow shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Moscow Shipyard and she was completed in 2005. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Moscow Shipyard.

Kassandra has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 5 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Kassandra is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Kassandra comfortably cruises at 11 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 11 knots with a range of up to 1,500 nautical miles. Her low draft of 1.6m/5'3" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. She was built to Other classification society rules.
