McKee Glass was founded in 1834, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by the McKee Brothers. They also went under the names J. & F. McKee, Bryce, McKee & Company, McKee and Brothers, National Glass Company and McKee Glass Company. Five brothers were involved in the company with James and Samuel involved in other McKee factories as well. They produced window glass, bottles, Depression glass, milk glass, kitchenware and much more.

In the 1850’s, they opened up a factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, producing flint and pressed glass. In 1888, they moved the factory to Jeanette, Pennsylvania, and within a year, combined with the National Glass Company. In 1903, they reorganized as the McKee Glass Company. They produced milk glass, pressed glass and window glass. In 1917, they made glass headlight lenses for Dodge. In 1951, they were sold and became the McKee Division of the Thatcher Glass Manufacturing Company.

They were later acquired by the Jeannette Glass Company and finally closed down for good in 1983.

I have a McKee Hickman Gold Trim salt/pepper shaker (no lid) and I cannot find any information on it. Replacements.com has it listed, but no pictures or other info. Can anyone help me? Thank you, Heather

I purchased 7 small 3 inch plain round plates (maybe butter pats?) They are jadeite green and are embossed on the bottom of each, McK. I cannot find any information on them. Does anyone know what their purpose is and when they were made?

I have a amethyst carriage. The only other one I found stated there were no markings and it was Mckee Brothers. (The one I have has no markings either) Before I do anything with it, I would like to know if it is a Mckee Brothers for sure. Any ideas how or where I can get information on this?

Amazing to me that the very item I am curious about is like the one Lyn has. This is my second one. The first was given to my ex mother in-law. This is marked same as Lyn’s. There is a glass cylinder under the heavy glass lid. Presumably, to hold ice and chill the beverage without watering it down. Have no clue what a second hole on the side could do. Mine has a little spigot at the lower side as did the first one. Seems silly to leave an opening for a vent. Unless they wanted the flys to have a drink too. I gave $150 for the first one in 1983. This one even more. In fact, it was on a high shelf in a lady’s kitchen and she had no trouble talking me out of $300 off of a repair bill on her house. And no I was not overcharging her a lot so that the numbers meant nothing. Always had a heart for my clients never charged enough to stay in business. No mo plumbing!

I recently purchased a water cooler bottle with gasket and heavy glass lid. There is a hole near the bottom that I assume is for a spicket, but there is also one on the top, and I wonder if it is for a stopper of some sort or cork just for air purpose.. It is probally about 5 gallon size, maybe a little less. I am told it comes from the local funeral home in Mayfield KY. I purchased it near there. I only paid $20 or $25 and thought it was a deal. I was looking for large glass containers to put cookie cutters in for display. Can you give me any info on this. It is marked McKee Glass Jeannette PA

Thanks , Lyn

Milk Glass Reproductions with McKee Mark By Mark Chervenka

Milk glass reproductions with mckee mark.

Original covered animal dishes marked McKee are among the rarest and most expensive pieces of milk glass. Some McKee animals can bring over $2000. Now new milk glass pieces are in production that have a nearly identical mark as original McKee pieces.

The original McKee mark is in raised script on the inside bottom of the base (Fig. 2). It is about 7/8" left to right, about 1/4" high. New marks are pretty much the same size so you can't use dimensions to tell old from new. There are three basic differences that separate old from new.

First, look at how the leg of the original letter "K" wraps around the end of the word McKee. The old leg resembles a hook. It is relatively horizontal before the hook curls back towards the letter "E". Compare this to the leg of the K in the new mark. The new leg is more a semi circle. The end of the new leg points straight up, not back at the letter E.

Next, compare the legs on the letter "M". The left leg of the old M is considerably longer than the right leg. Legs on the new letter M are equal in length.

Also look at the "C". The old letter C is a script style with the bottom curl extending further to the right than the top of the C. The old C is smaller than the new C and there is a distinct gap between the bottom of the old C and the horizontal line below the C. The new C is an oval shape with symmetrical (even) sides. The new C is almost twice the size of the old letter and there is virtually no gap between the new C and the horizontal line below it.

The new marks are appearing in pieces made by Summit Glass. It is thought, but not as yet confirmed, that about twelve shapes are carrying the new McKee trademarks.

Some of the new pieces are being made in genuinely old molds, others are in new molds made to resemble old pieces. Fortunately, the old molds being used are from other companies and are not original McKee molds. This is good news if you are familiar with genuine McKee shapes. If you can't recognize original McKee shapes, don't buy a piece based on the mark alone. Look the piece up to confirm it was originally made by McKee. One of the best references for McKee milk glass is Yesterday's Milk Glass by Regis & Mary Ferson, © 1981, now out of print. The majority of McKee's covered dishes are shown on a single page, shown above in Fig. 5.

The new base photographed for this article, for example, is from a double humped camel covered dish. It is not an original McKee shape. The camel mold was bought by Summit from Westmoreland Glass when that company went out of business. As far as we're aware, no original McKee shapes in milk glass are reproduced with the new mark at this time. Obviously this could change so be careful.

Price for the McKee marked reproductions are modest. The camel once cost only $20. It was purchased by a milk glass collector in Illinois.

Special thanks to Frank Chiarenza for loaning his original McKee base and providing background information.
