If you have rented a car at Split Airport, driving to Hvar from the airport is possible. The journey involves driving to the port of Split and then taking the 2-hour ferry ride to Stari Grad. From there, take the 30-minute drive to Hvar Town. Check the best car rental deals here!

Shuttle bus transfers from Split Airport to Split Central Bus Station run regularly and take approximately 40 minutes. The port of Split is located just across from the Split Central Bus Station, within a 2-minute walk. From Split Port, you can take a ferry or a catamaran to Hvar.

Lastly, private transfers are available from Split Airport to Hvar by car or van if you prefer a more direct route. These transfers can be arranged through various companies and offer a more personalized experience with the added benefit of door-to-door service. The private transfer costs around 250€ for a 3-person vehicle, including ferry costs. The prices for a van transfer from Split Airport to Hvar for eight persons start at 300€. Hvar Airport

Hvar doesn’t have its own airport, so if you’re traveling from other parts of Croatia or Europe, you’ll need to fly to Split Airport. From there, you can easily reach Hvar using the various transportation methods mentioned earlier. While Brac Island, Zadar, and Dubrovnik airports are also available, they are further away from Split and offer fewer transportation options to reach Hvar.

However, Hvar does have an airstrip designed for small panoramic and sports planes. This modest airstrip, located just outside Stari Grad, is a field. Our friends flew to Hvar from Pula using a small Cessna aircraft, which was able to land on this modest airstrip.

split to hvar ferry to stari grad

The main ferry terminal is located one kilometre from Stari Grad, and its year-round ferries take two hours from Split. There are just three crossings in winter (from the end of October to the end of May), with more in the summer schedule, including a peak season crossing at 01:30.

You can buy tickets online, but please note that this does not guarantee your car on the ferry. Ferries are filled on a first come, first served basis. So, if you are coming in the season, get there early, or you may find yourself waiting for the next ferry. You can buy your tickets for the ferry to Hvar from Split at the little sales booth in front of the ferry in Split, or from the main Jadrolinija terminal in Split harbour.

stari grad to split ferry schedule

Here are the winter ferry times, above. Click here for the 2022 schedule . During the high season in the summer, the ferry operates as many as seven times a day. You can check the latest schedule online and buy ferry tickets for Split, Hvar and all other Jadrolinija destinations from the official website .

drvenik to sucuraj ferry

There is a second car ferry option connecting Split to the island of Hvar, which gives additional flexibility. The eastern town of Sućuraj is connected to the mainland at Drvenik by a 30-minute crossing. The longer driving time is offset by the shorter ferry crossing. Additionally, this route also has the benefit of a later crossing (22:00) if you are trying to make the island later in the evening. Once you hit the island, Sućuraj is a 1-hour drive to Jelsa, and another 30 minutes to Hvar Town. Some islanders use this route to go from the island to Split as it is cheaper as well.

hvar split catamaran

Be aware that the Sućuraj ferry has capacity for just 32 cars. While this is rarely a problem in the shoulder and off-season, queues do build up in peak season. My worst experience one August was being car number 182 in the queue. That meant that I had to wait until the sixth ferry. When such queues appear, the timetable gets abandoned. The two ferries working in tandem in such situations shuffle back and forth to Drvenik to reduce waiting times.

There are up to 11 voyages a day during the height of the summer season, and as little as 5 during the winter months. The summer schedule for the year 2022 has been announced by Jadrolinija (link opens the .pdf file).

Jadrolinija, the state ferry company, operates two schedules each year – the winter sailing schedule, which runs from October to the end of May, and the summer winter sailing schedule, which goes from late May until October.

The schedules rarely change from year to year. You can find the latest schedule online via the Jadrolinija website .

There is also an excellent private catamaran operator, Krilo, which offers various catamaran connections to Hvar Town. Check out their latest sailing schedule here .

There is no car ferry directly to Hvar Town, only passenger-only catamarans. If you are coming by car (and you should consider the flexibility of car hire once on the island perhaps), your two options are Stari Grad and Sućuraj, as outlined above.

split to hvar bus

The ferry from Split to Stari Grad takes two hours. The ferry offers both an indoor salon and an open-air top deck. The indoor salon has a cafe selling drinks and sandwiches. Currently, it’s operating under the epidemiological measures to insure safety for the staff and the passengers. The open-air deck is VERY popular in the summer, as you can touch up on the tan and enjoy spectacular views as the ferry sails between Brač and Šolta from it.

You can take pets on board and you can also smoke outside but not in the salon. There is free WiFi, but it is somewhat erratic, and you will have more chance of connecting if you do so as soon as you embark.

Buses meet every ferry to Stari Grad from Split (with the notable exception of the peak season early morning ferry, which arrives at 03:30). One bus heads directly to Hvar Town, the other to Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska. They are located on the right as you exit the ferry, and you buy tickets from the driver. If you are driving to Hvar Town, turn right and keep going and enjoy the view – it is spectacular! The journey time is about 20 minutes. Turn left for Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska and the southern resorts of Zavala, Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedjejla.

There are no buses meeting the ferries to Sućuraj.

How much Does the Ferry Cost?

Split to Stari Grad Foot Passenger – 39 kuna Split to Stari Grad Car – 250 kuna Drvenik to Sućuraj Foot Passenger – 13 kuna Drvenik to Sućuraj Car – 155 kuna

Passengers with an island ID pay less. For catamaran prices, see below.

Where to Find the Ferry Timetable?

You can find the online schedule (and book) for all ferries and catamarans from Jadrolinija here . As of the last several years, Jadrolinija has a mobile application as well.

Hvar to Split Catamaran Options

Hvar Town is best served by fast catamarans, and you can find all the connections, prices and times below. Journey time is about one hour.

There is also a year-round daily catamaran from Split to Jelsa via Bol, which takes 100 minutes. The schedule does not change much between the winter and summer seasons. The main difference is that during the high-season, it leaves Jelsa for Split each day at 6 am, and returns from Split at 4:30pm (getting to Jelsa around 6pm) You are advised to buy tickets in advance in peak season.

A Peak Season Split to Hvar Catamaran Trick

While there is never a problem for foot passengers on the car ferries, the same cannot be said of the catamarans to Hvar Town. Those get insanely popular in the highs season. You are advised to buy tickets in advance, either online or in person. Please note, car drivers, get there early in peak season to avoid missing the ferry due to queues. Tickets to Hvar Town sell out quickly. However, the boat operators usually keep an allocation for passengers to onward destinations, such as Korčula, for example. So while there may be no tickets to Hvar Town available, you can buy one to Korčula. It might cost you a little more, but it will get you to the chill zone quicker.

Dogs and other pets are allowed on the ferries without any problem. Indeed, one dog famously went on the ferry from Split to Stari Grad solo in search of his British owner back in 2012. Both Cookie and his British owner were regular commuters between Split and the island. When Cookie (pictured above) woke up in the house in Split to find her master not there, she went off in search of him. Read the story here .

Small pets can now be transported on catamarans for a price of 20 kuna. Larger dogs (and, on occasion, goats) allowed outside the main cabin.

And if you are planning to take a Christmas tree on the catamaran on Christmas Eve, think again. I had such a plan one year. The trees can be transported on ferries, but not catamarans, so I learned to my cost. It was only after some intense persuasion about how my kids’ Christmas would be ruined by a tree that led to a compromise of my tree lying out for the back for the journey.

You can smoke on deck on the ferries, but not inside. No smoking is permitted on the catamarans, as those don’t offer the option of spending the journey outside.

You may take your bike on the ferries to Hvar (for a small fee). Regarding catamarans, Krilo accepts bicycles, Jadrolinija does not.

There is free Wi-Fi on the main Stari Grad ferry. It is not the most reliable, but a welcome addition when it works. Log on as soon as you board, as my experience is that it is harder to do so once the journey has started.

There is currently no Wi-Fi on the catamarans or ferry to Sućuraj.

Boat travel to the islands of Dalmatia is somewhat dependent on the weather . The main factor are the two famous winds, bura from the north, jugo from the south.

In all but truly exceptional circumstances, the Stari Grad ferry will always go. I think there were three occasions in my 13 years living on Hvar when they cancelled the ferry due to bad weather. The Sućuraj ferry is much smaller, and therefore a little more susceptible to bad weather, but cancellations are also rare.

The catamarans are a different story, however, and they are more erratic due to bad weather in the winter months. Sometimes the Jelsa catamaran will depart from Stari Grad, where it is more protected by the deep bay. This can be a concern if you have an early flight from Split Airport . If yes and you want to be sure in bad weather, take the 05:30 ferry from Stari Grad to Split and then the airport bus. There is an early connecting bus from Hvar Town to the Stari Grad terminal.

Split to Hvar Travel Information: Is There a Phone Number?

Jadrolinija offers a very useful information service in several languages, where you can find out the latest information about schedules, as well as up to date info on whether or not a catamaran will sail. The number, +385-21-338333, is available from 5 am daily.

split to hvar pelegrini

If you could have just one person to solve all your travel problems from Hvar to Split, it would be this young lady – Marijana from Pelegrini Tours in Hvar Town . Located on the Hvar riva close to Hotel Riva, Pelegrini is the official sales agent for Krilo, as well as offering a host of other excellent services. Among them is an early-morning Facebook status during bad weather on whether or not the catamarans will run.

There was a brief moment from 2014 to 2016 when there was a direct seaplane service from a bay next to Split Airport into Jelsa on Hvar. The journey was not only spectacular but only took 15 minutes. Sadly those days have gone, at least for now. If you are not going to splash out on a private speedboat, you will need to get from Split Airport to Split , before catching a ferry or catamaran.

There are several providers offering the connection between the Split Airport and the islands that might be within your budget, depending on how big the group and their budget is. One of the newcomers to the market is Adriatic Express , and their offer might be worth checking out.

Day trips to Hvar from Split are growing in popularity. Almost every tour agency had something in their offer, from group trips to luxury private speedboat tours. If you want to do it yourself, it is quite easy. The first ferry will get you to Stari Grad by 10:30, with the last one out at 20:30 (or 23:00 in peak season). You can take the waiting bus into Hvar Town, or for more fun and flexibility, collect a one-day car rental directly at the ferry terminal. Apart from giving much greater freedom, it also not too expensive if there are a group of you. Scooter hire is also a fun option.

UberBOAT – Taking the Split to Hvar Transfer to the Next Level

split to hvar -uberboat

Uber may be all over the world, but where else can you say that you took an UberBOAT? The ride-sharing app took to the waves in Dalmatian in the summer of 2017, and its seasonal presence continues to grow. There are two main options – point to point transfers and hiring a boat for a more relaxed tour. We’ll just have to wait and see what the service will offer in 2021, but until then – learn all about UberBOAT and how it works .

split to hvar seaplane - romulic and stojcic

August 27, 2014 was an historic day in European aviation, as a Twin Otter from European Coastal Airlines taxied into the harbour of Jelsa after a 15-minute flight from Resnik, near Split Airport, the first scheduled seaplane service in modern European aviation history.

Sadly, the seaplane chapter last just two years before the Croatian Civil Aviation Authority grounded the company due to safety concerns. While there have been rumours of other seaplane companies entering the market, none has so far come to fruition. Here are the thoughts of industry expert Max Oldorf on the future of seaplanes in Croatia .

Helicopters and Private Planes from Split to Hvar

split to hvar helicopter

A year before the arrival of the seaplanes, a Swiss helicopter company brought a Robinson R44 to be based in Stari Grad. Here it is above, as TCN helped organise a panoramic helicopter flight for the film crew of the first Ultra Europe Hvar Beach party in 2013. A little over a month later, the Swiss flew back to Zurich due to lack of business. The situation today is that private planes (maximum six passengers) and helicopters are possible on request. Where is the Best Place to Wait for the Ferry from Split to Hvar?

split to hvar one eyed pig

While the best place to wait for the ferry in Split is undoubtedly its famous riva in front of Diocletian Palace, if you are looking for something comfortable next to the ferry, there has been little choice in recent years. That changed last year with the opening of the One Eyed Pig directly opposite the Stari Grad ferry, and with plenty of space indoors and a great selection of drinks, as well as bites to eat and a bakery attached. You can find the One Eyed Pig on Facebook .

Ferries from Split to Hvar Island

"Judita" Catamaran

There are many ferries from Split to Hvar island. Hvar is the most visited destination among all Central Dalmatia islands . Hvar has always been the best and most frequently connected island with the mainland.

Whether you are traveling by car or on foot, Hvar island has very frequent connections to almost all island destinations. Only two towns on the island have only car ferries connections:

Some destinations like Hvar town and Jelsa can be reached directly only by passenger fast boats known as catamarans .

See also: How to get to Hvar island . This article mentions ferries but also other ways to get to Hvar.

International Ferries To Stari Grad (Hvar)

It’s important to point out that Hvar island’s Stari Grad town is the only location connected with international car ferries from Italy . Stari Grad has a seasonal car ferry from Ancona and Pescara that first arrives at Stari Grad port and afterwards proceeds to Split.

Taking a ferry from Italy to Split is your best option if you are traveling from Italian Adriatic coast. The major departure ports from Italy to the opposite shore of the Adriatic are Ancona and Pescara.

From Italy you can also travel by ferry to other Croatian destinations such as Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik.

Car Ferries From Split To Hvar (Stari Grad)

Car ferry line 635, from/to Stari Grad (Hvar) to Split runs in low season (September 28th until May 28th) three times a day.

Ferries on N°635 line to Stari Grad runs very often in high season between May 30th to September 28th . You have seven departures daily, the earliest at 01:30 AM (only from June 29th to September 1st). The crossing time is 120 minutes.

The next one is at 05:00 AM (keep in mind, on this one, cargo vehicles have priority).

Coastal line from Rijeka to Dubrovnik is not operating since 2015! Stari Grad port has become the most important island harbor for all ferries from Split and for coastal line ferries on Rijeka – Split- Stari Grad (island Hvar) – Korcula – Sobra (island Mljet) – Dubrovnik line.

Ferries From Drvenik to Sucuraj (Hvar Island)

Drvenik - Sucuraj ferry 2015 high season

Sometimes it can be an alternative solution for travelers in case they miss the connection from Split, as line Split to Stari Grad ferries can sometimes be overloaded, particularly in high season (from July 15th to August 15th).

Mid August is a period of ferragosto in Italy when Italians invade Split and Dalmatian islands. Read more about Drvenik – Sucuraj car ferry!

Passenger Ferries From Split To Hvar

I’m calling them passengers ferries as they aren’t for any kind of vehicle transportation, but only for foot travelers . In Croatia they are commonly called catamarans or high speed ships.

To help you figure out where catamarans leave from Split to Hvar I highly recommend you check my Split harbor map to easily find your fast ship as car ferries run from different harbor terminal.

Good news from Jadrolinija: Jadrolinija’s ferries are without a doubt the cheapest and most effective way to travel the Adriatic, and from this year you can book tickets online (but only for foot passenger catamaran lines, and not for Split to Hvar car ferries).

There are several catamarans connecting Split with Hvar island destinations:

Split to Hvar catamaran timetable (summer schedule)

  • Line 9603a – Split – Milna (Brac island) – Hvar town
  • Line 9604 – Split – Hvar town (proceed to Korcula and Lastovo islands.
  • Line 9608 – Split – Hvar (proceeding to Korcula island)

Split to Jelsa town (summer schedule)

  • Line 9603 – Split to Bol (Brac) proceeding to Jelsa (Hvar island)

There are two companies running on these routes to Hvar island: the state company Jadrolinija , and private company Kapetan Luka .

Another company called Adriatic Fast Ferries operating on SplitExpress.com entered the market recently. They offer a high-speed ferry service between Split airport or Split town to Bol (Brac island) and Stari Grad .

This service is only available in summer: June 1st until September 15th. If you’re arriving to Split by air then this service can easily take you to aforementioned nearby destinations. Their ferry port is located only 500 meters from Split airport .

Ferry timetable for low season

Every year Jadrolinija (state ferry company) introduces a new winter timetable for ferries from Split to Hvar , Brac , and Vis islands.

Split to Stari Grad (Hvar Island) is one of the most popular ferry connections. This connection is reduced from seven to three ferry trips daily.

If you are arriving from Dubrovnik by car and planning to reach Hvar island from Drvenik to Sucuraj (Hvar island), number of ferry lines will be reduced from eleven summer lines to six daily crossings.

Some early morning ferry lines (at 05:00 and 05:30 AM) will be substituted with 06:30 departure from Sucuraj to mainland (Drvenik) and with ferry that leaves at 08:00 from Drvenik to Sucuraj.

Getting to Hvar

Getting to Hvar

Split Airport is the nearest airport to the island, and the best place to fly to if you’re planning on getting to Hvar . See our Getting to Split page for details on which airlines fly there from the UK and Europe.

Getting to Hvar

Getting to Hvar by catamaran from Split

Read on below for car ferries to Hvar!

The easiest way of reaching Hvar (assuming you’re not bringing a car with you!) is to take one of the daily catamarans from Split to the island.

Jadrolinija operate a year-round daily catamaran from Split to Hvar Town, that then travels on to the islands of Korcula (Vela Luka) and Lastovo (Ubli); journey time to Hvar Town is just over one hour. During the peak summer months (June to September, and especially in July/August) they operate additional services on this route.

Jadrolinija also operate a daily catamaran service from Split to Jelsa on Hvar that stops at Bol (on the island of Brac) along the way. Journey time from Split to Jelsa is 1 hour 50 minutes.

Jadrolinija  also have a service from Split to Vis that once a week (on Tuesdays) stops at Hvar Town. This service is suitable if you’re trying to get from Hvar to Vis and vice versa…as long as you’re travelling on a Tuesday, that is!

Finally,  Jadrolinija also have a daily catamaran (early June to mid September) that travels Split – Bol – Hvar – Korcula – Dubrovnik.

Kapetan Luka  operate a year-round catamaran that runs from Split to Hvar Town and then on to Korcula Town. (In the summer months, there is also a stop at Prigradica before Korcula Town.)

Kapetan Luka  also run a catamaran that operates a route from Split to Milna (Brac) – Hvar Town – Korcula Town – Mljet – Dubrovnik…and vice versa, of course! This service runs several times a week from the end of April to the end of October, with daily sailings from the end of May to mid October. This service is great for reaching Hvar Town direct from Dubrovnik, as well as from Mljet, Korcula or Brac.

You can book tickets for the Kapetan Luka catamarans to Hvar using the search box below:

Getting to Hvar by catamaran from Dubrovnik

As mentioned above,  Kapetan Luka ‘s catamaran also sails from Dubrovnik to Hvar. The journey takes just over three hours, and this service runs from the end of April to the end of October (daily from the end of May to mid-October). The catamaran sails from Dubrovnik in the mid-afternoon.

Book tickets for the Dubrovnik to Hvar catamaran using the search box below:

Getting to Hvar by car ferry from Split

There are several daily ferries from Split to Stari Grad on the island of Hvar (journey time 1 hour 40 minutes) with Jadrolinija , a service that is run year-round. This is a car ferry service (with other vehicles also allowed on board) although you can also use this ferry as a foot passenger.

This route is the most suitable for those driving from the south of Croatia (such as from Dubrovnik) and trying to reach Hvar, meaning you don’t have to drive all the way up to Split to get a car ferry. Again, this is operated by Jadrolinija.

  • Vis to Hvar Town: Jadrolinija operates this service but only once a week (on Tuesdays) (year-round)

Getting to Hvar by coastal car ferry

Jadrolinija ‘s coastal car ferry – Rijeka to Split, Stari Grad on Hvar, Korcula Town, Mljet and Dubrovnik – no longer operates.

Getting to Hvar by ferry from Ancona

Jadrolinija ‘s service from Ancona to Split stops at Stari Grad in August.

Getting around on Hvar

If you’re planning on doing a bit of travelling around on the island, the best and most hassle-free way is to hire a car. You can hire a car just for a few hours (to keep costs down) or a day or so. You could also hire a scooter or even a bicycle  – although this probably means that you won’t be going all that far!

Alternatively, buses do run between the towns on Hvar – check local bus stations for timetables. The Hvar Tourist Office website does have schedules for bus routes to and from Hvar Town. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a PDF bus timetable page.)

Boat services to nearby islands

The nearby Pakleni islands are a wonderful set of islands to visit, with their tranquil nature and lush vegetation. You can reach them by taxi boat from Hvar Town – you should see the boats moored in the harbour there. Alternatively, ask at a local travel agency.
