6 meter yacht for sale

Melita was designed and built at Fairlie in Scotland by William Fife in 1934. Originally built for Sir Ronald Teacher, she has a wonderful racing track record and great potential to turn heads and to win regattas. She is ready to be raced but would benefit from a modest investment by the new owner to bring her up to concours condition; her performance might also be further improved by some strengthening of the area around the mast step.

She has been in her current ownership for 20 years, racing regularly with the UK fleet and in France, including Worlds in 2005 and 2007, and  at the 2008 Europeans in La Trinite. In 2022 she raced in the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta and the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Fife Regatta and in 2023 was preparing to race in the Worlds in Cowes. Unfortunately she had to withdraw from the Worlds due to her owner being incapacitated at that time.

  • Mast table with winches below deck for all halliards, main outhaul, pole lift and downhaul

Present condition

  • Good condition overall. Considerable care has been taken to maintain upkeep and appearance by the current owner of the last 19 years
  • Melita would benefit from strengthening the area around the mast step, and port-side beam shelf in order to remain competitive with top performing classics in the class, many of whom have been strengthened in this area. Upwind performance might also be enhanced with a different mast section-the current one considered extremely stiff.
  • The deck was thoroughly rubbed down and varnished (10+ coats) in 2022. Teak deck and mahogany in very good condition
  • The hull is epoxy sheathed. Topsides are in good condition, but some cosmetic improvements could quickly be made by cleaning and polishing where for example some varnish has run.
  • Winches would benefit a good servicing.
  • The trailer is not presently roadworthy but enables convenient storage and is easy to manoeuvre around a boatyard. Tyres are all inflated and all bearings checked or replaced 2021/22

As the asking price reflects, this is a wonderful opportunity for the new owner to prepare and tune the boat to their liking, and to participate in the upcoming season including the European championships in Sanxenxo, Spain in September 2024, the Olympic Centenary/Mediterranean/Fife regattas, Challenge Lemanique, club racing etc. Melita has the potential to be a serious contender given her excellent provenance, William Fife design and build, and proven past racing track record.

She is in perfect condition, ready to sail, awaiting her new owner.

Designed by Jac M. Iverson (Norway/Sweden 1884-1974) in 1936.

Hull built by Holms båtvarv, 1936-1937.

Mast built by Arendal båtvarv, 1936, (destroyed whilst racing the 2007 Queen Christina Nations Cup, rebuilt in spruce by Chantier naval Birbaum, Switzerland).

Saga was purchased by Joëlle and Jean-François in 1989 in a sorry state. Numerous elements requiring replacing, a complete refit was decided and undertaken from 1989 to 1991 by the classic boat specialist Chantier naval Birbaum near Lausanne, Switzerland.

Beautifully crafted on that occasion:  – Keel body repair: oak.  – New bolts of lead keel: bronze.  – New bow body: oak.  – Full new stern body from keel to aft: oak.  – New keel main frames: iroko.  – New hull frames: (+/- 80), steam-ployed acacia.  – Replacement of 1/3 of the planks: mahogany.  – New deck: marine plywood and teak.  – Entire standing and running rigging.

The future:

Dedicated servants of this magnificent and vigorous old Dame for more than 30 years, Joëlle et Jean-François are reaching retirement. They wish to pass on the Saga adventure to keen and active 6m sailors – those who enjoy competitive racing as well as cruising – whilst maintaining this marvellous vessel in mint shape for years to come.

Asking price: € 50,000

FOR SALE – D50/US89 – DODO Urgently Needs New Owner

6 meter yacht for sale

Help! DoDo D-50 (later US-89 in the Port Huron & Sarnia Fleet) a 1935 Bjarne Aas design, built by E Nordbjaerg Baadevaerft, for King Olav V of Denmark is at risk of being cut up if a new owner cannot be found urgently.

This historic Six has been based in the US Great Lakes for may years. The boat was last sailed and raced in 2015 and was stored indoors until November 2023, when it was moved outside and covered.

The mast is a triple spreader hollow spruce mast with an aluminum boom.  The sails are North Sails: 1 dacron main, 3 dacron jibs and 2 spinnakers. Included are Kevlar jib sheets and spinnaker sheets.

Other gear includes Harken blocks and 2 Lewmar winches as well as 4 vintage winches still in use.  Lifting cables for lifting from the keel bolts and a steel storage cradle.

A 6 hp Johnson outboard can be included if desired.

The underbody has been (successfully) altered to a more modern design with the rudder slightly farther forward against the shortened keel design.  With the normal prep work (bottom painting and mast stepped) the boat can be put in the water and raced.

DoDo can be inspected at the River’s Bend Marina in St. Clair, Michigan, USA (50 miles north of Detroit). She is now for sale for USD 15,000 or best offer.  The boat risks getting cut up for storage charges in the next month or so if no one is interested.

35′ International Six Metre

Full specification

Wooden ships comments on this 35′ International six metre

Designed by J.G. Stephens

Built by Alex Stephens and Sons, Govan , Glasgow in 1932.

Alexander Stephens & Sons was a famous Clyde shipyard already 200 years in existence when this yacht was built and Stephens senior had had considerable success with his racing yacht designs.  One of his 6-meter designs, Coila won the coveted Seawanhaka Cup on several occasions

This was his son, J.G “Wee John”. Stephens’ early entry into the world of racing yacht design and the young man incorporated some interesting new ideas.

According to an article in Yachting Monthly at the time of her launch, young Stephens had tank tested his adventurous designs finding some of his ideas proven and others not so.

Amongst other ideas, he is known for putting his mast in the boat “the wrong way round” – a traditional pear-shaped cross section but placed with the fine end forward.

As a reflection of his confidence in his design, he was a part owner along with two others, one the local MP.

The design is rather extreme with an almost straight line from the stemhead to the rudder heel and a vertical stern post. The hull is unusually full forward of the mast with a limited forward overhang and some quite flat sections and the counter runs off to a very fine end finishing in a small archboard.

Maida is famous for having lost the Seawanhaka Cup to Jill in 1932.  “Wee John” Stephen and co-owner Maj. C.G. MacAndrew both had experience of the Seawanhaka Cup and despite high hopes their failure must have been a great disappointment at the time.

In later life a dog house and an engine were added to convert her for cruising. She also spent an extended time onshore in one owner’s garden from 1972.

35′ International Six Metre

The rebuild was begun around 1986 by Scottish boat builder David Spy who replaced all her ribs and some planking.

The restoration was completed by Peter Wilson in Aldeburgh using the original plans. Some design changes were made on deck and some modern techniques and materials used but the spirit of the original design has been retained.

Maida has proved to be a good boat to sail in competition since her rebuild and with a practiced crew can still make a good show.

Conventionally planked in what was described on original drawings as African white mahogany on a yellow pine back-bone.  All steam bent oak timbers with a few double thickness for extra strength.  All fastened with copper nails, clenched in the Scottish tradition.

The oak timbers are ring right round the inside in one piece.  Alternate oak floors and galvanised strap floors  right up through the bow.

Galvanised steel floors in the midships area and up into the counter on every second timber. It is believed these strap floors were all replaced new sometime between 1972 and 1986.

Timber rudder with vertical stock through a bronze stock tube.

In the refit in Aldeburgh, the deck was replaced using a ply sub deck with yellow pine overlay yacht laid to a varnished king plank, the coverboards finished varnished, the seams payed with butyl rubber.

New varnished mahogany cock-pit coamings.

The interior of the hull is varnished in way of the cock-pit, painted in the ends.

Sail trays forward under the fore deck.

Foot rests each side in the cock-pit.

Slatted teak cock-pit sole boards

Pair of new stainless steel hanging web knees each side incorporated in the chain plates which in turn are attached to a new deck plate to take the shrouds.

Single centre-line mooring cleat forward and aft.

A small bridge deck across the middle of the cock-pit with a pair of full width deck beams carries the main sheet swivel block.

Stainless steel wrap-round stemhead fitting with stem band takes the anchor cable. Fractional Bermudian sloop rig on new Collars mast in varnished spruce, stepped through the deck on the keel.

Triple spreaders. The upper spreaders incorporate a pair of jumper struts to give a very well supported mast with diamonds and jumpers above, cap shrouds, intermediates and lowers.

Single standing back-stay to the counter.

Fore-stay through the fore deck aft of the stem set up to a rigging screw to the inside face of the stem.

Shrouds made up to a stainless steel each side, tied in to straps and hanging knees below.

Headsail sheet tracks down the cover boards each side with cars.

2 pairs of Lewmar top action 2-speed sheet winches on the decks alongside the cock-pit, tails lead into the cock-pit through jammers

Halyard led down the mast and through original bronze glands on the deck to turning blocks on the mast step and led aft to cleats in the cock-pit.

A pair of modern stand-up blocks on the deck in way of the mast.

Tufnol bottom action winch on the forward coaming with cleats.

Main sheet made off to an anchor point on the aft deck with the twail led forward and down to a swivelling stand-up block with jammer attached on the mini bridge deck across the middle of the cock-pit.

New varnished spruce boom by Collars. Slab reefing with fittings on the boom.

Tackle kicker.

Sails by Ratsey and Lapthorne, new 2003 and some newer Doyle Sails

2 x loose footed mainsails.

Varnished spinnaker boom.

Compass on each side deck.

Tictac on the mast below the boom.

12v battery

12v bilge pump.

Manual bilge pump

The yacht has been laid up for two seasons and will need some light refitting before she is ready to be campaigned again.

A good opportunity to acquire an historic Six in near race condition for a very reasonable price.

Deep seas and tight spaces impede search for 6 missing after yacht sinks off Sicily

6 meter yacht for sale

Italian Firefighters scubadivers sails towards the area where the UK flag vessel Bayesan that was hit by a violent sudden storm, sunk early Monday, Aug. 19, 2024, while at anchor off the Sicilian village of Porticello near Palermo, in southern Italy. (AP Photo/Lucio Ganci)[ASSOCIATED PRESS/Lucio Ganci]

PORTICELLO, Sicily (AP) — Police divers resumed searching Tuesday for six people believed trapped in the hull of a superyacht that sank in deep seas off Sicily, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who was celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who had defended him at trial.

The luxury sailboat, off Porticello near Palermo, was about 50 meters (164 feet) underwater — far deeper than most recreational divers are certified for and a depth that requires special precautions. Recovery crews could only stay for 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed efforts to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

Divers tag-teamed the shifts and were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, or ROV, to help in the search. They hadn’t been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that shifted during the violent storm that struck the vessel early Monday. Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping, but the teams haven’t verified their presence there through portholes.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly .

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the majestic, illuminated 75-meter (246-foot) mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappearing over the course of a minute.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body was recovered, identified by officials as the Antiguan-born on-board chef. The rest of the 10-person crew survived, including the captain whom prosecutors reportedly sought to interview.

The survivors were rescued by a nearby sailboat after getting into a lifeboat.

Lynch, who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. His wife, Angela Bacares, survived the sinking. Hannah Lynch, the couple’s 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for.

Also unaccounted for are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s lawyers, and his wife, Neda; and Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International and the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified in Lynch’s defense, and his wife.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors, said he was close enough to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.

“A moment later, she was gone,” he said.

“It’s a great, great tragedy,” said Britain’s ambassador to Italy, Edward Llewellyn, who visited Porticello on Tuesday. Britain sent four investigators to the scene, given the disaster involved a British-flagged ship and British citizens were among the missing.

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding much more slowly than another big shipwreck in Italy, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship that flipped on its side off Tuscany’s coast, because of the depth of the wreck and the limited space divers have to maneuver.

“That was much simpler. Here everything is more tight,” he said.

The outing was intended at least in part as a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal and a “looking forward to what was coming next,” said Reid Weingarten, a Washington attorney and a member of Lynch’s defense team who was not on the yacht.

“A lot of people went, a lot of people were planning to go and then, of course, this happened,” Weingarten said.

Weingarten worked with Morvillo and said he “was like a brother.”

Aki Hussain, CEO of international insurer Hiscox Group, where Bloomer was chairman, said the company was “deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.”

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation,” he added.

Among the survivors, the Emslie family was released from Palermo’s pediatric hospital on Tuesday. Charlotte Golunski had reported that she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but then managed to hold her up over the waves until they were both pulled to safety, doctors said.

The father, identified by ANSA news agency as James Emslie, also survived.

“They don’t talk much, primarily because they consider themselves survivors and they don’t understand why they survived given what they went through,” said Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at Di Cristina pediatric hospital.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Cipolla said the parents had been in touch with other survivors, who are being housed at a nearby hotel and were waiting for other family members to arrive in Sicily.

The Bayesian, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, is registered to Revtom Ltd., according to online maritime database Equasis. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

According to online charter companies, it had been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and was notable for its massive 75-meter-tall (246-foot-tall) aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The coast guard said to date there was no trace of fuel leaks from the wreckage.

In an unrelated event, Lynch’s co-defendant in the Autonomy trial who was also cleared, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed Sunday when he was hit by a car while running in Cambridgeshire, England, said Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg.

Winfield reported from Rome. Associated Press writers Eric Tucker in Washington; and Danica Kirka and Kelvin Chan in London, contributed to this report.

When buying or building a yacht, remember: first and foremost, your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? Are you interested in a new or used yacht? Custom built or semi-custom? How are you planning to use your yacht? If you are planning to charter your yacht to help offset some of the running costs, then factor in the charterer, but remember, a yacht is very personal and you must consider your own needs as a priority.

Types of Superyachts

What type of boat best suits your needs

The type of yacht will shape the experience for the owner. The most popular superyachts (be they sail or motor) have a combination of elements that make them strong across the board both during ownership and in resale value and charter success. From the style and type of yacht and the build pedigree to the crew layout, the facilities and even the décor, there are many factors that, when combined, influence the enjoyment of yacht ownership. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale. She has a steel hull built to Lloyds classification and aluminium superstructure that combines classic Benetti motifs such as covered companionways and streamlined, sculpted mullions with the clean, crisp lines of a modern yacht. The interior design and styling are by Redman Whiteley Dixon and Susan Young.

Her exterior highlights include an elevated observation deck above the large sundeck which has an enclosed lounge/dining/party room amidships and plenty of open-air space forward and aft. There’s also a Portuguese bridge with sunpads on the forward coachroof, and two partially shaded aft decks. She also has an indoor/outdoor gymnasium on the lower deck with a hinged wall that folds out to serve as a sea-level terrace and a large beach club in her stern.

The sundeck has an elevated jacuzzi pool up front, plus a forward-facing bar and lounge, and a wide-open space for sun loungers astern. The upper aft deck is spacious with an impressive 14-seat teak dining table as its centrepiece, plus a bar, buffet and several clusters of lounge seating. The main deck aft is another outdoor lounge with its own bar.

Her 1,426GT interior is arranged to host up to 14 guests on board in six double and two twin cabins. Key features of the design scheme include fine Italian leathers, rich walnut veneers and nickel inlays. There’s a grand marble foyer on the main deck and a notably high standard of finish throughout.

The main salon converts to a cinema and there’s a separate TV lounge alongside the formal dining room. She also has a library on the main deck and a massage room with two private beds. The skylounge above is an elegant lounge bar.

All the way forward on the main deck, the master suite includes two full bathrooms, a separate study and a private lounge. There’s also a VIP cabin on the upper deck and five others – three doubles, two twins – down below.

Her main tender is an 8.5m custom built wooden StanCraft speedboat with a 350hp inboard engine and elegant classic lines. She also carries a 7.5m Nouvrania RIB and her inventory of watersports equipment includes a pair of Yamaha Waverunners.

Twin Caterpillar 3516B diesels with a combined 4,522hp give a top speed of 17kts, a 15kt cruising speed and a maximum range at 12kts of 5,000nm. Two pairs of Naiad zero speed stabilisers are fitted.
