We had a great holiday. Transfer information and support was superb. Prior to booking the same applies, Kate dealt with all our transfers, information with humour and precision for which we are very grateful.

I returned from a weeks sailing with two friends in early October, it is difficult for me to express just how good Nisos are.

Nisos Yacht Charter has got to be the best Yacht Charter company I have sailed with. The staff are extremely helpful and from day 1, they ensured that we had everything we needed

Excellent service from start to finish, no stone left unturned and staff extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

A big thanks goes out to Nisos, as we had a wonderful time and only big problem was that our trip was too short!

Nisos Yacht Charter Ltd is a British family owned operation offering premium sailing holidays & the highest level of service on a modern fleet of monohull yachts from Jeanneau and Bavaria from 32ft to 57ft. We operate out of Nidri on the east coast of the Greek Ionian island of Lefkas (also known as Lefkada).

When is the best time to charter a luxury yacht in the Ionian Islands?

The best time to charter a yacht in the Greek Ionian Islands is during the summer months, which is the peak yacht season. The shoulder seasons – spring and fall – are also lovely times to charter, especially for those who are seeking a quieter vacation with fewer crowds.

Average temperatures in the Ionian Islands

Summer (June to August) : During the summer months, temperatures in the Ionian Islands can range from average highs of 30 to 35 degrees Celsius (86 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s not uncommon for temperatures to go even higher during heatwaves. This is the peak superyacht season, and for the best selection of luxury yachts, you should book as far ahead as possible.

Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November) : These seasons are characterized by milder temperatures. Spring sees an increase in temperatures, with average highs ranging from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius (64 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Autumn starts to cool down, with temperatures similar to those in spring.

Winter (December to February) : Winters in the Ionian Islands are relatively mild. Average highs during winter range from 12 to 16 degrees Celsius (54 to 61 degrees Fahrenheit), and lows can drop to around 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit). While winter is considered the rainy season, it’s still relatively dry compared to northern climates. There are few yachts for charter during the winter months, with most yachts in warmer climates, such as the Caribbean.

How many guests can I take on an Ionian Islands yacht charter vacation?

For most charter vessels, guest numbers are limited to 12, even if the yacht could technically sleep more. This is due to marine legislation and compliance. However, some yachts can carry more than 12 guests. No matter how many guests you want to take with you on an Ionian yacht charter holiday, the luxury yacht brokers at Moran Yacht & Ship can find your ideal yacht. The town of Fiskardo is steeped in history, being the only town to survive the islands devastating earthquake, the streets have many stories to tell. The capital of Argostoli is as cosmopolitan as they come. Explore this intriguing town of venetian buildings and verdant forests.

Ithica Ithica is a quaint and island which emulates a seductive elegance and charm. Home to Homer’s Odysseus, what this tiny island lacks in size is made up in unparalleled opulence. Considered to be the diamond of the Ionian Islands, Ithica is overflowing with chic cafes, designer shops and charming bars.

GREEK IONIAN ISLANDS

Located on the west coast of greece, the ionian islands are known for their stunning white sand beaches and lush greenery. there are six main archipelagos: corfu, zakynthos, paxi (paxos) in the north and lefkada, kefalonia and ithaki in the south with the most popular being corfu, zakynthos and kefalonia. as well as the main islands, there are dozens of smaller islands. no wonder it is a prime yacht charter destination – these sailing grounds were made for island hopping..

Historically and culturally, the islands have strong connections to Italy as many of the islands were once occupied by the Venetians. You can still see their influence in the architecture of Corfu Town, Zakynthos Town, and Argostoli. Surrounded by wonderful cliff-backed beaches, many of which are protected. The interiors of the islands are verdant for much of the year. Many small, deserted bays are perfect for water sports or just to drop anchor and chill, swim and relax for a few days. There are lots of caves to explore and the many little ports offer excellent restaurants and bars, along with a warm welcome from the locals.

Diving in the Ionian Islands

Chios is rated as the best diving island in greece. oyster charter will arrange the perfect dive with a local dive company. every type of dive is available here from exploring caves and tunnels, to incredible wall dives and an array of wrecks to check out. over in zakynthos, you will find the main nesting spot for loggerhead sea turtles amongst the teeming sea life including parrotfish, flying fish, eels and octopus..

There are many wrecks to keep technical divers busy – from the early 20 th Century to the late 1990s. RMS Britannic was a sister ship of the RMS Titanic that lies off Tzia (Kea) under 120m of water. Used as a hospital ship during WW1, she was sunk by a mine in 1916.

The wreck of the Peloponisos lies just off Mykonos. A passenger-cargo ship, that sank in July 1926 is in very good condition. She broke into two pieces as she sank and is a destination for experienced divers as she lies at 55m. The Peloponisos acts as an artificial reef, where you can see all kinds of marine life.  Also worth a visit close to Mykonos is the wreck of Anna II. This 203ft cargo ship sank with a cargo of cement in 1995. Under 25m of water, she is in great condition and a great wreck to explore.

The wreck of HMS Perseus, a British submarine that sank in 1941 after hitting an Italian mine lies 11km off Kefalonia. The well-preserved wreck is mostly intact – its compasses still work and show the course she was heading on when she hit the mine. The mine’s anchor can still be seen close by.

The best time for sailing charters in the Greek Ionian Islands

6 REASONS TO CHOOSE US.

Luxury yacht charters in the ionian islands.

Are you looking for the holiday of a lifetime on board a luxury “floating villa”? How does it sound like to have a full crew at your disposal for anything you may need while you relax on board?

With a luxury yacht charter in the Ionian you will be enjoying the comfort of an all inclusive, 5-star hotel with the added fun of being on the water. Stand up paddleboards, kayaks, sea scooters and water skis are just some of the water toys available with a luxury yacht charter on board our top-of-the-line crewed yachts. And let’s not forget about the exhilarating sailing the guests can enjoy with the guidance of their experienced captain and crew.

Do you prefer sunbathing, wine tasting and opulent, gourmet meals under the stars? How about snorkeling and dinghy rides ashore exploring different islands each day?

Whatever way you prefer spending your time on holiday, your crew will tailor the experience to your needs down to the last detail so that you can truly make the most of your luxury yacht charter from our bases in Lefkas or Corfu.

You may be wondering why you should prefer a fully crewed yacht charter over a bareboat charter with added crew. What makes a luxury, crewed yacht charter in the Ionian so unique is that it has permanent, dedicated crew very familiar with the exact boat and sailing region and working well as a team to ensure a truly stress free holiday. Crewed yachts are also usually much more premium with many luxury add ons such as air-conditioning, generator, watermakers, TV-DVD, microwaves, dishwashers and even leisure amenities such as a jacuzzi.

Our luxury Ionian catamarans and sailing yachts

Picking the right luxury yacht for your Ionian charter will be a seamless procedure with the guidance of our luxury yacht charter consultants. The initial information you will need to share in order for us to be able to guide you to the right yachts is the number of people you will be on board with and the crew members you require. Usually, permanent crew have their own, separate accommodations, however, it’s always good to check the number of berths on board, especially when wanting to hire additional crew members.

Ionian Catamarans has a wide portfolio of luxury yachts, from sailing catamarans to powercats and even superyachts over 80ft.

The captain/ skipper: Your captain will be the lead member of the crew responsible for the navigation, sailing and mooring of the boat, the safety of the crew and guests as well as the seamless cooperation of the crew.  He will also act as your local guide sharing information about local history, sightseeing, swimming spots and recommendations for restaurants, bars etc. Importantly, your captain will create and be responsible for the itinerary. The itinerary on a luxury yacht charter in the Ionian is completely flexible and based on your preferences, although the captain may need to alter it, should he believe that prevailing weather conditions threaten the safety or comfort of everyone on board.

The hostess: Your hostess will be responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of your boat and generally ensure that you enjoy an unsurpassed level of comfort and luxury.  They will assist the skipper and chef when needed so that you truly don’t have to lift a finger during your holiday.  When not paired with a chef, the hostess will also take care of the provisioning and preparing and serving simple meals and drinks.

The cook/chef: One of the things that make luxury yacht charters so special is that most fully crewed yachts come with a permanent chef on board – this means that you won’t have to spend any time in the kitchen during your holiday (unless you want to of course!). Your chef will create a full menu of gourmet dishes and exquisite drinks based on your preferences and dietary or allergy needs and they will also take care of the provisioning and cleanliness of the kitchen area. Different luxury yachts come with different crew combinations, some featuring a captain and hostess duo, while others also have a permanent cook/chef and or deckhand. Kindly get in touch with our experienced yacht charter consultants to find the yacht and crew that best matches your needs.

Things to keep in mind when considering a luxury yacht charter in the Ionian

A luxury yacht charter is essentially an all-inclusive package experience, however, this is offered in the form of the obligatory A.P.A. (advanced provisioning allowance) that is payable on top of the charter fee.

This amount (usually 20% of the charter fee) covers operational expenses for bunkering, food supplies and any other incidental expenses like:

  • Fuel consumption for running the engine and the generator (depending on fuel rate and cruising hours)
  • Gasoline and lubricants for the use of the tender
  • Food – Drinks and spirits as per supermarket receipts
  • Delivery fees (TBA if applicable)
  • Marinas’ fees, if any (only private marinas)
  • Agent/Marina fees abroad (if applicable)

Another thing to consider is tipping the crew. While it is not obligatory in Greece, it is customary, especially when you are satisfied by the service provided on board. We suggest approximately 10% of the charter fee to be offered as gratuity to the crew.

Our luxury yacht charter destinations

A luxury yacht charter in the Ionian Sea truly is an unparalleled experience. Along with the unsurpassed level of comfort and luxury you’ll find onboard, you’ll have the opportunity to explore beautiful bays and bustling villages, and swim in turquoise waters surrounded by green and emerald hues in secluded beaches, some only accessible by yacht.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

South Ionian Sailing Journal by Louise, Nautilus Yachting

This year, it was time to return to where we first fell in love with sailing, the beautiful South Ionian where our passion for charter holidays started!

To take advantage of cheaper and quieter mid-week flights, we decided to head out to Greece a couple of days ahead of our charter to explore the wonderful beaches on the northwest coast of Lefkas. Car hire at Preveza Airport was easy and the driving is straightforward so don’t be put off! Three nights at Villa Elia - a really friendly apartment-based property. Extending our stay and having time to settle into holiday mode before setting sail was a welcome change.

Kathisma is one of the most stunning beaches on Lefkas, there are many bars and restaurants nearby with facilities and good parking. If you get tired of sunbathing with cold beers delivered to your umbrella while looking out at the turquoise waters, you can look up and watch the paragliders swooping down from the cliffs above.

South Ionian Sailing Journal by Louise, Nautilus Yachting

Day 1 - D-Marin to Sivota, Lefkas (16nm)

On embarkation day, having the car meant we were able to provision well in the huge supermarket close to D-Marin. We unloaded our goodies onto our Sun Odyssey 440 for the week. A quick car drop-off combined with paid early embarkation meant we could get away ahead of the rest marina!

After a refreshing swim stop, at the first of many delightful spots in this area, our first night we spent moored in the colourful fishing village of Sivota. On the southern end of Lefkas island this bustling seaside town has a good choice of bars and restaurants with something to suit every budget. A delicious selection of tasty Greek treats to start followed by fish and a lovely evening getting to know our skipper.

Sivota has long been a port of call on our South Ionian flotilla and it is not hard to see why it is so popular with Nautilus clients, a charming place for a stroll after breakfast.

D-Marin to Sivota, Lefkas (16nm)

Day 2 - Sivota to Assos, Kefalonia (18nm)

Today, our Skipper Alun; a very experienced professional supplied by Kiriacoulis, announced that today we would be heading away from the hoi polloi to somewhere special - we were definitely up for that!

Around midday we anchored for a swim and a delicious lunch of Greek goodies at the divine Porto Katsiki (Goat Port). At the very tail end of Lekfas, it is said to be so named as it could only be reached by goats and sailors.

With perfect afternoon winds we sailed into Assos in the northwest of Kefalonia. What a sight to behold, a picture-perfect bay of crystal-clear water and the stunning village comprising of Venetian villas in an array of pastel colours. More swimming, and it would be rude not to have cocktail and watch the sun go down before heading off to dinner on the quayside.

There are only 10 moorings available in the bay so we were lucky to find space courtesy of our skipper’s local knowledge. We enjoyed Assos town very much, but it was a rocky night with masts knocking together in the early hours. Luckily Alun was able to take control and help instruct our neighbours on what to do. The west coast of Kefalonia is definitely not for the faint of heart!

Sivota to Assos, Kefalonia (18nm)

Day 3 - Assos to Fiskardo / Foki Bay, Kefalonia (10nm)

There is an hiking track rising above Assos town leading to the Venetian Castle affording the most beautiful views across the bay. It is a challenging walk but definitely worth the effort.

Today we enjoyed revisiting one of the star attractions from our flotilla days. Fiskardo is a gem of a town packed full of sparkling stores to tempt the shoppers amongst you. Treat yourself to a special provisioning stop with delicious breads and pastries from the excellent bakeries.

Alun suggested heading to a quieter anchorage round the corner at Foki Bay, a short hop but a perfect recommendation. We found a shady cool spot to moor up amongst the olive trees with lovely relaxing afternoon swimming and a trip to the sole taverna for a sundowner.

We cooked onboard this evening with a few fully-crewed catamarans as neighbours. We recognised a few Nautilus clients enjoying their multiple courses created by private chefs, and the absolute luxury of dining under the stars in this peaceful bay.

Assos to Fiskardo / Foki Bay, Kefalonia (10nm)

Day 4 - Foki Bay to “Big” Vathi, Ithaka (16nm)

The next morning, we head to Afales beach under the chalky white cliffs and the very best snorkeling. Great sailing and good winds, but not without drama - mobile phone overboard! Note to self - buy a buoyant accessory for mobile next year!

We are in need of some housekeeping by this point; to refill our water tanks and stock up on provisioning so we chose to spend this evening in Vathi. The largest town on Ithaka island, often referred to as “Big Vathi” to avoid being confused with “Little Vathi” located on Meganisi island. This is the only place we paid mooring fees during the week, only €6 for a prime spot on the quayside.

As the principal town of Ithaka is a ‘working’ town and is a touch commercial. There are a lot of restaurants around the harbour but going just a couple of streets back from the waterfront and we found a little gem which had a nice vibe and an abundance of food.

Foki Bay to “Big” Vathi, Ithaka (16nm)

Day 5 - Big Vathi to Kalamos (19nm)

Time is starting to fly by now but there still time to drop anchor for a lunch stop at one of the South Ionian’s most desirable spots – Atokos island with its single residence where you have the chance to swim ashore and ring the bell in the deserted chapel!

Another swim stop at Kastos island before heading to Kalamos town. A meal at George's Taverna a real Mamma Mia! Experience, from the warm welcome and assistance in mooring to the traditional fayre at his restaurant. Check patterned tablecloths adorn busy tables right on the water’s edge with excellent food and buzzing service whilst watching the glorious sunset.

Our lovely Ionian flotilla was in town tonight and it was good to catch up with such a happy, fulfilled, bunch of sailors swapping their stories over sundowners. Good times!

Big Vathi to Kalamos (19nm)

Day 6 - Kalamos to Porto Atheni, Meganisi (11nm)

Today there are good sailing winds so everyone is getting a chance to take the helm.

We take a stop at Port Atheni and enjoy a chance encounter with the legend that is Bobby ‘Dazzler’ our first ever skipper. A good friend to Nautilus and Odysseus Yachting having accompanied many of our happy clients. There are lots of laughs catching up and not merely a few beers at Taverna Niagas.

Many private yacht owners moored here appreciate its simplicity, small shop, excellent bakery, and a couple of good tavernas. We really enjoyed the contrast of this unspoilt, unpretentious little village.

Kalamos to Porto Atheni, Meganisi (11nm)

Day 7 - Varko Bay (5nm) to D-Marin Lefkas (9nm

Our last day! We head to the bay of Varko, a fabulous open anchorage with a stunning beach and surrounded by lavender fields full of goats. A new beach club has popped up since our last visit but with great chillout music playing it feels very chic and unique! There are also lots of larger yachts and catamarans with European families enjoying play time in the warm clear waters, but in a flash it is time to head back to Lefkas!

What a joy it has been to be back here in the South Ionian sea and making more memories. About as close to the perfect Greek Island hopping adventure as you can get. We are all still smitten with this corner of the world!

Ionian Islands Yacht Charter Experiences

The lush landscape of Ionian Islands, considered as the greenest and richest among all of the island destinations in the region, is one of the best reasons why you have to set sail to its islands on your holiday vacation in Greece . Seasoned sailors and repeat visitors to the islands swear that the enthralling view of the local terrain is what we normally imagine of our dream holiday in a Greek paradise.

Important aspects of your yacht charter holiday in Ionian Islands are the archaeological landmarks, artefacts and architectural marvels of historical significance. These important relics are the clear testaments of the rich history and culture of Greece and highlight the strong influence of Venetian, Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman civilizations.

Before it became a favourite destination of sailors and tourists spending their holidays on board luxury yachts, Ionian Islands were primarily known for its sheep herding, agriculture and fishing industries. Today, you will be thrilled by the warm reception of locals who have grown to enjoy the presence in their shores of tourists coming from all points of the Globe.

Corfu has long been a popular tourist destination, whether visiting by foot or cruising by luxury yacht. Outdoor activities are plentiful and beach bars, restaurants and cafes line the waterfronts. La Grotta is one of the most beautiful locations to discover by vessel and Roman ruins, the Achilleion Museum, Spianada Square and The Liston will easily fill a day of adventuring on land.

Beautiful Paxos is home to a magnificent collection of beaches, of which Kloni Gouli Beach, Kipiadi Beach, Monodendri Beach and Erimitis Bay Beach are some of the favourites. Tripitos Arch is another stunning coastal feature to visit by superyacht and in town the Pythias Gallery, Paxos Museum and churches will make for an interesting day in town exploring the Ionian Islands' living culture.

In Antipaxos the towns are mostly within the hills, leaving the soft sandy beaches devoid of any development. The Bay of Antipaxos is a popular anchorage and a wonderful serene environment to wake up for breakfast and a cool morning swim.

Lefkada offers an excellent balance between the latest modern conveniences and untouched natural wonders. Moor in one of the fantastic anchorages and spend a relaxing afternoon sunbathing aboard you luxury yacht with the Jacuzzi, BBQ and wet bar at your fingertips, or disappear under the waves with the Seabobs, snorkelling equipment of Scuba diving gear. The dramatic cliffs and coves are just calling to be seen by Jet Ski or kayak, and after the sun sinks over the horizon pull into town for a nightcap or the start to a night of dancing.

East of Lefkada, Meganisi is known for Papanikolis Cave and the winding coastline produces plenty of coves for overnight anchorages and water sports in a sheltered environment.

On Ithaca there is the site of Homer's School, archaeological digs and a slew of stunning isolated beaches where you can unwind in privacy for a candlelit meal at sunset. Spend an afternoon on the pristine white shores of Gedaki Beach.

Myrtos Beach and its cave on Kefalonia is one of its main attractions but far from its only draw, and wine connoisseurs will be in their element with the number of vineyards and tasting sessions on offer.

Couple your fine dining with the amazing seaside restaurants or the exceptional skills of your own on board chef, or catch your dinner in the crystal clear waters as you kayak along the cliffs. When cruising along the Kefalonian coastline be sure to have your cameras ready to capture the ruddy clay cliffs and sands of Xi Beach. The south east corner of the island has a great selection of Scuba dive sites where there is a sponge wall, caves and wrecks to satisfy more experienced divers.

Zakynthos is an island known for its nightlife and there is a fantastic selection of beach bars covering the coast in all directions. For shopping and artwork, ceramic arts are characteristic of the region and some jewellery will make a great present for family or friends back home. The intricate icon walls can be found in Zakynthos churches, among which is the colourful Agios Dionisios Church. Navagio Beach is the site of the famous shipwreck, and if visiting in summer, avoid the tour groups by going early in the morning or later at night. Those looking to delve into the island's history have museums covering byzantine times through to the Second World War.

Things to Consider:

Yachting seasons & climate:.

The summer months are the best time to visit when the temperature in July and August is an average of 25°C/77°F and rainfall is at its lowest. Spring and autumn are also excellent times to visit, and in winter the temperatures still sit at a cool but comfortable 10°C/50°F for exploring the ruins and visiting the museums.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Smart-casual dress is acceptable through the local towns and villages, while on more conservative and traditional islands long-sleeved clothing is more appropriate. An extra layer is advised in the evenings to keep off the coastal winds.

Main Ports and Marinas:

Marina Lefkas (Lefkada), Nydri Marina (Lefkada), Gouvia Marina (Corfu), Gaios Marina (Paxos), Ithaca Port (Ithaca), Argostoli (Kefalonia)

Famous Restaurants & Clubs:

De Blanck Wine & Champagne Bar (Nidri), Elli's Restaurant (Ithaca), Phevos (Corfu), The Venetian Well (Corfu), Etrusco (Corfu)

A Must See Attraction:

Melissani Cave (Kefalonia), Drogarati Cave (Kefalonia), Casa Parlante (Corfu), Navagio Beach (Zakynthos), Nydri Watrefalls (Nydri), Gedaki Beach (Ithaca)

Best beaches to visit in your yacht:

Myrtos Beach (Kefalonia), La Grotta (Corfu), Halikounas Beach (Corfu), Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach (Zakynthos), Gerakas Beach (Zakynthos), Porto Katsiki Beach (Lefkada)

Local Yacht Events:

Southern Ionian Regatta, Regatta Trophy "800 Martyrs" Erikoussa Otranto, Fiesta Open Regatta

Best time to go:

In July and August the temperatures soar to 31°C/88°F and the sea water is a warm 25°C/77°F. Visitors looking to enjoy the warm weather without the crowds at their peak should visit in June or September, with May and October even quieter on the edge of the shoulder seasons. The latter months will ensure that the beaches, shops and restaurants are relatively quiet, although not all of the landmarks (e.g. religious sites) might be open to visitors.

Explore Greece with us!

If there is a paradise on the face of the earth then you will find it in Greece! The wealth and diversity of the Greek seas, the endless kilometers of the Greek coast and the thousands of Greek islands are what draw sailors to our shores time and time again. The mild climate and many days of sunshine make Greece the ideal destination year round. This advantage is strengthened both by thousands of years of marine tradition and by favourable conditions for sea traveling: the Greek seas are considered safe, distances between coasts are small while conditions related to wind strength, ambient and sea temperatures are equally favourable.

Those who have already sailed the Greek seas and discovered the beautiful world of its islands know what we are talking about!

Why to sail with Ionian Charter?

  • For our 31+ years experience as yacht charter agents and yacht owners
  • For our carefully maintained yachts with many extras
  • For the security we offer. Your sailing holidays are secured through YACHT-POOL.
