This $10 Shave Oil Cuts My Shaving Time in Half

I'm the type of person who prefers to shave on a needs-to-happen basis, but after joining a swim club this summer, I found myself shaving almost daily. As much as I'd love to get laser hair removal on my underarms and legs, I haven't taken the financial leap yet. For now, my hair removal methods lean heavily on shaving and waxing . I've used shaving cream for years, but with the constant exposure to chlorine, my skin started to get drier than usual, and I wanted a more hydrating option that would offer some hydration. I had the opportunity to test out the Athena Club Glossy Shave Oil ($10) and was curious how it would stand up to my shaving cream.

What I Like About the Athena Club Glossy Shave Oil

I went into the experience just hoping for a more moisturizing substitute for my shaving cream, but was floored by how much easier it actually is to shave with an oil. Instead of trying to shave around mounds of creamy foam — which gets everywhere — the clear, glossy oil made it easy to see exactly what I was doing. I could work efficiently, guiding my razor along my legs without missing any patches. The oil kept a perfect moisture barrier between my skin and my razor and I didn't have to keep applying it like I usually have to do with shaving cream. I got an incredibly close shave without any irritation and there wasn't a foamy mess all over the shower afterward.

After toweling off, my legs felt more moisturized than they usually feel after shaving. I still had to apply lotion, but noticed I could wait longer, which gave me time to dry off my hair and run a brush through it. I also felt like I could get away with using less lotion because of how moisturized my legs felt from the oil.

How to Use the Athena Club Glossy Shave Oil

You can apply it over wet or dry skin. I found that two pumps per leg was the perfect amount for me. It doesn't lather like a shaving gel, so you don't need to rub back and forth to create suds, which also helps to cut shaving time in half.

What to Consider Before Trying the Athena Club Glossy Shave Oil

If you're sensitive to fragrances, you might not like how fragrant this shaving oil is. The floral and fruity tropical scent can be a little intense, especially if you are shaving multiple areas of your body. I could still smell the oil after I rinsed and dried off, but it did wear off throughout the day.

The Updated IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide, the First IWC with a Silicon Hairspring

This year, IWC brings the emblematic Portugieser collection under the spotlight, introducing several stunning new additions to the collection, including the impressive Eternal Calendar and updates to several iconic models, such as the chronograph and the 7-day Automatic . On the occasion of Watches and Wonders Shanghai, the brand unveils a new version of its Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide . Now available in steel with an obsidian black dial, this sportier model debuts an updated movement featuring a silicon hairspring for the first time at IWC.

Originally presented in 2020, the gold Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduced a complication that could not be more appropriate for the nautical-themed “Yacht Club” sub-collection. The original, specific functionality of the model relies on two sub-counters linked to moon phases and tide calculations.  

The sub-dial at 6 o’clock displays the expected times for the next high and low tides. The interval between two high tides is consistently 12 hours and 24 minutes. After an initial calibration (via the crown) using tide tables for a specific location, the indicator remains highly accurate, with a deviation of only 10 minutes over 100 years.

The double moon phase display at 12 o’clock, featuring IWC’s signature double moon for both hemispheres, has been enhanced to indicate spring and neap tides. This provides valuable information about the tide’s strength. Spring tides, which bring particularly high water levels, occur during the full moon and new moon phases.

This new iteration of the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide introduces a more modern, sportier aesthetic to the model. Now crafted in steel, the case is still 44.6mm in diameter but is now water-resistant to 100m. The Obsidian Black dial is subtly enhanced with red and blue accents, adding a dynamic touch to the overall design.

One of the key upgrades is related to the movement powering these two complications. The new calibre 82836, an evolution of the 82835, marks IWC’s first use of a silicon hairspring. Operating at 4Hz, the balance is visible through the exhibition caseback. The automatic winding mechanism employs a Pellaton system, enhanced with virtually wear-free ceramic components, and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring.

Although the brand hasn’t provided further details, this first model to feature a  silicon hairspring is likely not the last. While opinions on modern silicon hairsprings vary, this material offers undeniable technical advantages. This synthetic material is thermally stable, non-magnetic, lightweight, durable, and ideal for crafting hairsprings that outperform those made from traditional metal alloys. Silicon hairsprings have been around for about 20 years, initially restricted to a few brands by a patent held by CSEM as part of a collaboration between the Swatch Group, Patek Philippe, and Rolex (plus Ulysse Nardin). With the patent now expired, and despite new patents being filed, it was expected that more brands would start using silicon hairsprings. For more details, check out our article here .

The steel IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide (reference IW344002) is presented on a stainless steel bracelet with brushed H-links and polished centre links. A pair of pushers release its folding buckle and features a fine-adjustment system. The price is set at CHF 22,000 .

Good luck with an almost 45mm watch in this day and age. 41-42mm would be much nicer in my very personal opinion and much closer to the sweet spot of 40-42mm for a sports or sporty watch. 13.4mm height is very good for the complications this watch offers!

Size and price aside, this watch looks GOOD.

Performance & Range

Athena is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots with a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles from her 103,255 litre fuel tanks at 10 knots.

Athena knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with an extensive selection of action packed water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Principle among these are two Laser dinghies sailboats to bring out the explorer in you. Another excellent feature are Freestyle waterslides letting guests speed from the sun deck to the water in seconds. Also there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If that isn't enough Athena also features a Kite Surfer, wakeboards, kayaks, fishing equipment, scuba diving equipment and much more. Athena has a Pascoe RIB to transfer you from ship to shore.

A Summary of Sailing Yacht ATHENA

Originating from the Royal Huisman ship building company in the Netherlands the ATHENA is 90 m 295 (ft) in length. Completed in 2005 the comparatively recent interior design and decor confirms the capabilities from Rebecca Bradley Interior Design and their approach to interior yacht design. Superyacht ATHENA is able to accommodate up to 12 passengers with 22 crew. She is a recent triple masted schooner. She will reach a maximum speed of 19 knots.

The classic beauty ATHENA is a clipper bowed triple masted schooner that was built for internet entrepreneur James H Clark who already owned the 47,4m sailing yacht HYPERION. ATHENA was the winner of the Show Boats International Award for Best Sailing Yacht over 40 Meters in 2004

The New Build & Naval Architecture of Luxury Yacht ATHENA

Dijkstra & Partners was the naval architect involved in the formal nautical design work for ATHENA. Also the company Dijkstra & Partners and Pieter Beeldsnijder Design expertly collaborated on this project. Interior designer Rebecca Bradley Interior Design was commissioned for the overall interior styling. Created at Royal Huisman this vessel was constructed in the Netherlands. She was officially launched in Vollenhove in 2005 before being delivered to the owner. Her core hull was crafted from aluminium. The sailing yacht superstructure component is fabricated mostly from aluminium. The total length of the luxury yacht on deck is 77.04 (252.76 ft). With a width of 12.2 m / 40.03 ft ATHENA has impressive interior. She has a deep draught of 5.77m (18.93ft). She had refit improvement and modification carried out by 2008.

The Main Engines And The Crusie Speed That S/Y ATHENA is Able To Achieve:

The 3516B engine powering the yacht is built by CATERPILLAR. Her propulsion units are twin screw propellers (wartsila 4 blades). The main engine of the ship gives 2000 horse power (or 1492 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The sum output for the yacht is therefore 4000 HP or 2943 KW. The bow thrusters are Holland Roer.

Historical Summary:

Athena's original owner was Frank A. Cressey Jr., president of the Modesto Gas Company and a member of the St. Francis Yacht Club. For 65 years, she was in Northern California and used in freshwater.  Athena  has been in Southern California for the past 23 years. Her previous owners, Dan and Joni Carter of Corona Del Mar, eventually donated her to a foundation in 2011.

Athena ’s original name was  Tapawinga , believed to mean “happy home” in a Native American language. The Carters renamed her  Athena  after Greek goddess of navigation.

Awards:  Athena  has won several awards throughout the years. She has won “Best of Show” at Marina del Rey’s Old Fashioned Days At the Park more than once. She also has won “People’s Choice” and “Best Powerboat over 40 feet” at the Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival.

$10.9M price drop on sailing superyacht Athena

The famed 90 metre sailing superyacht Athena, jointly listed for sale by Burgess and Merle Wood & Associates , has had a $10,900,000 price reduction.

One of the largest sailing yachts in the world , this  yacht for sale  has a pure Dutch pedigree, combining the talents of Pieter Beeldsnijder for exterior design with the naval architectural skills of Dykstra Naval Architects and the craftsmanship of the celebrated Royal Huisman yard.

Built in aluminium to Lloyd's class and MCA coded, Athena was delivered to much industry acclaim in 2004. She boasts superb engineering, state-of-the-art sail handling gear and interior joinery of the highest quality in lightly stained mahogany. Accommodation is for 12 guests in five cabins configured as a full-beam master suite, three doubles with queen size beds and a twin cabin with two Pullman berths, and all with en-suite bathroom facilities.

A regular at the world's top superyacht regattas, Athena is as fast as she is good looking. On deck 55 Rondal captive and drum winches allow lightning fast tacks under full sail while sails can be set and stowed at the press of a button or two. The tri-mast schooner rig by Rondal provides some 2,500 square metres of sail power and is complete with in-mast furling for the topsails and in boom furling for the carbon fibre gaffs.

Under power, twin 3516B Caterpillar engines give her a cruising range of 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Currently cruising in the Caribbean, Athena is now asking $59 million.
