7 Jet-Powered Yachts That Bring Speed and Performance to the Water

From a 27-foot runabout to a 165-foot superyacht, these boats show the benefits of jet power: instant acceleration and an impressive top end, not to mention turn-on-a-dime maneuverability., kevin koenig, kevin koenig's most recent stories.

Jet power delivers instant acceleration, a strong top end and good maneuverability.

Jet-propelled boats come in all shapes and sizes, carrying several advantages over more traditionally powered vessels. The propulsion units operate much like that of a personal watercraft, pairing an inboard engine to a jet pump that sends a powerful stream of water through the rear to propel and steer the vessel.

Enviable acceleration, instant maneuverability and strong top ends are the pros of jet drives. The prop-less design also benefits vessels navigating in waters with sand bars, rocky bottoms or crab pots that stop boats with propellers.

While not particularly fuel-efficient, the beauty of this specialized, niche propulsion is that it can be scaled to work on everything from jet skis to sportfishing machines to superyachts. Typically, jets appeal to owners who crave performance and perhaps the bragging rights of owning a jet-powered boat.

Our 7 favorites, from the Yamaha 27SDX to the 165-foot Mangusta REV, show the versatility of the jet drive.

Sanlorenzo SP110

speed boat yacht

Despite sleeping up to eight guests, the Sanlorenzo SP110 has, as its superpower, the ability to convert into a massive dayboat. As such, it has exceptional exterior space, including a long, empty cockpit and bow lounge forward. Both can be filled with guests on sunpads. With 6,000 total horsepower pushing its jet drives, the SP110 can hit a top speed of 40 knots and cruise at 32. This yacht is widely admired for its innovative interior. The 110-footer has a split-level upper and lower salon, both located at the after end of the boat, with unfettered ocean views. One of the beauties of jet drives mated with a hull design like the SP110 is that running on just one engine at low speeds results in exceptional fuel efficiency.

Mangusta 165 REV

speed boat yacht

There are very few yachts in the world that will turn heads like this beautiful, massive Mangusta. The 165-footer’s exceptionally low profile was inspired by sportscars of the 1930s, but its ridiculously powerful engines are definitely 2023. The 165 REV has four 2,600-horsepower Roll-Royce engines paired to Kongsberg-Kamewa waterjets. That propulsion package delivers a top end of 34 knots, which is extremely fast for a yacht this large. The 165’s interior includes four staterooms, large salon ahd full galley, but the exterior gives off a beachy vibe—most notably at the stern. The beach club, which is part of the opening transom, ends with a large, telescoping ladder that leads directly into the water.

Spencer Yachts ‘Wall Hanger’

speed boat yacht

The jet-powered 63-foot Wall Hanger from North Carolina-based Spencer Yachts is a true rarity in the sportfishing world. The yacht’s cockpit looks like most pelagic-centered convertibles, with a fighting chair, mezzanine seating, and plenty of fishboxes and other dry stowage. But where Wall Hanger takes a left turn is in the engine compartment. The owner wanted the boat to have an under-four-foot draft to access the dock at his vacation home, so he opted for twin 1,700-horsepower Caterpillar engines matched to waterjets. The engines offer a top speed of 51 knots and a cruise of 40 knots—which make running to distant fishing canyons to hunt billfish easy work.

Seven Seas Hermes Speedster

speed boat yacht

From Greek builder Seven Seas comes one of the prettiest little boats you’re likely to see anywhere—the Hermes Speedster. The 22-footer has retro styling inspired by the Porsche 356 roadster, a precursor to the 911. That includes eye-grabbing touches like a rearview mirror, a convertible top, stainless analog gauges at the dash, and supple leathers throughout the interior. With its 170-horsepower Bombardier Rotax engine, the Speedster can hit 45 knots. But the compact size, combined with jet propulsion, also means the boat can spin on a dime. Fully equipped, the Hermes Speedster sells for about $250,000.

Hinckley Talaria 57

speed boat yacht

Few builders know more about jet boats than Hinckley. The Maine-based shipyard is world-famous for Down East vessels inspired by the working lobster boats that patrol the New England coastline—though Hinckley adds a lot more luxe and glam to its designs. Propless jet propulsion, Hinckley decided, would be the best power choice to ensure its Picnic Boats and Talaria could navigate Maine’s rocky coast. The flagship Talaria 57 above comes in both flybridge and coupe versions, boasting a top end of 40-plus knots and cruise speed of 35. With its two staterooms, the 57-footer makes for an excellent weekender.

AB 100 Superfast

speed boat yacht

Italian builder AB didn’t mince any words naming this 100-foot-long megayacht. With triple 2,600-horsepower MTUs, the AB can top out at a nearly unheard of 60 knots, or a blistering 69 mph. The boat is not just fast, but truly high performance, with excellent acceleration and a deep-V hull that slices rough seas with ease. The four-foot draft also means it can run in shallow harbors that would be inaccessible to other boats its size. This 100-footer has multiple layout options for  accommodations, while the rest of the interior is also customizable.

Yamaha 275SDX

speed boat yacht

This Yamaha flagship excels both on lakes and coastal waters. At its heart, the 275SDX is all about entertaining, which means it can be packed from the open stern to the open bow with guests. Mirroring lounges in the bow, twin lounge chairs at the transom, and more seating amidships make this a great boat for young families with friends in tow. Twin 225-horsepower engines offer not only quick acceleration but an impressive speed of 53 mph. Yamaha’s Drive Throttle control system also makes docking and maneuvering at slow speeds much easier. The system incorporates a toggle on the steering wheel that can move the boat forward or in reverse, without needing to ever let go of the wheel. This 27-footer is an example of how jet power has gone mainstream in the runabout market.

Best speed boats: 6 thrilling options under 25ft from muscleboats to electric boats

  • Top stories

Arguably the most fun category in the boating industry is the humble speed boat, which can pack a lot of fun into a compact package…

The best speed boats all share several simple yet joyous aspects that combine to create the ultimate recipe for fun on the water: a fast-planing hull, plenty of horsepower to push it along, and easy to trailer size. This formula has been around since the 1930s, however in my mind the 1970s really brought the best speed boats to the masses.

Boats like the Glastron GT-150 (as driven by Roger Moore’s 007 in Live and Let Die ) are the epitome of this type of boat – powered by a 135hp Evinrude Starfire outboard, this boat brought us what is still to this day one of the most exciting boating scenes in movie history.

England also had its share of excellent iconic speed boats with the likes of Fletcher whose Arrow range brought speed boats to the masses. After 20 years, the Iconic Fletcher brand has recently been revived, with an exciting new model the F23 due to be launched in 2024.

At the more exotic end of the spectrum, boats like the Riva 22 Ariston were driven by cognoscenti and movie stars alike and iconized the Cote D’Azur lifestyle in the 1960s and 70s.

My choices for the best modern speed boats follow the simple recipe mentioned above, however as with all things to do with boating, the boats themselves have got bigger over the years, so I will be focusing on boats between 22 and 25ft.

This is one of the most popular segments with a phenomenal choice of excellent and exciting boats, and a large budget range to match.

best-speed-boats-donzi_22_anniversary02

Donzi 22 Classic

Best American muscle boat

Introduced nearly 30 years ago, the 22 is the larger brother to the classic Donzi sweet 16 and it is an iconic and thrilling boat to drive. The hull has remained virtually unchanged throughout its production life, and is available as a new boat with up to 565hp on the back, care of Mercury Racing.

Respected as one of the finest boats built by racing legend Don Aronow , the Donzi carries the highest pedigree. A simple Bravo 1 outdrive mated to the big block V8 will push the boat over 80mph.

For the more experienced driver, the 22 is a thrilling proposition. The 22 Classic holds its value exceptionally well and used models are still highly coveted boats. With excellent rough-water handling, the hull is only 7ft wide, and with so much power and straight-through exhausts, the Classic is a real crowd puller.

Expect to pay around $175,000 for a standard boat, however this includes a premium Fusion and JL Audio sound system, DTS controls, Livorsi race gauges and a 10-year hull warranty.

best-speed-boats-Venezia_22-(2)

Comitti V22

Italian speed boat beauty

Founded in 1956 and still built on the shores of Lake Como, Comitti is an exclusive boat builder that produces some truly special craft, and the Venezia 22 is the smallest boat available from the yard.

Similar in style to the highly covetable Riva 22s of old, the Comitti 22’s modern power options include diesel, petrol and now electric. In top spec Elegance trim, the 22 has a hand-laid mahogany deck and can whisk up to six people to 48 knots with its most powerful petrol option.

As much an object of desire as a boat, the V22 doesn’t come cheap, starting at €124,000. It is very much a premium boat, especially when fitted out at the highest trim level, but in terms of speed boat performance, few boats come close in this segment – its flared spray rails and deep V hull give a dry, comfortable ride and the top-notch build quality further justifies its lofty price tag.

best-wake-surf-boats-yamaha-222XD

Yamaha 222SE

Best jet-powered speed boat

Better suited to inshore and lake use, the Yamaha 222SE is an excellent alternative to traditional propeller driven speed boats. Using twin high-output 1,898cc 180hp engines delivering their power through jet drives, you can expect brutal acceleration and excellent cornering ability.

Jet boats benefit from the safety aspect of having no external propeller, making the boat, particularly with its optional wake-tower, an excellent tow sports platform and very safe to swim off of.

Slow speed handling on small jet boats can be challenging, but once mastered the Yamaha is hoot to drive. With a capacity rating for up to ten people and a comprehensive specification, its $75,000 price tag offers exceptional value for such a well-built boat.

Standard features like the 12.3” touchscreen dash provides GPS navigation, boat data and full interface with the boat’s excellent sound system. The upholstery is treated with a coating that reflects heat from the fabric for long days in the sun. Easily to trail with a shallow draft, the Yamaha is a very easy boat to own.

best-electric-boats-x-shore-eelex-8000

X Shore Eelex 8000

Best electric speed boat

It may not be the speediest of speed boats here in terms of top speed, however the X Shore is capable of a highly respectable 30 knots and can accelerate from 0-23mph in an incredible 4.2 seconds.

With tech from the pinnacle of the automotive industry, such as WiFi based telemetry that is always monitoring the boats systems and batteries remotely, it also updates the boat’s essential software on the fly.

The simple shaft-drive set-up is controlled by a unique rotating throttle mounted on the side of the steering wheel. This ultra-high-quality runabout has a class-leading range of just over 100nm and with 10 different configurations, its sure to have a layout to suit your needs.

The X Shore, however, is not a cheap option, with prices starting at over $320,000. Stem to stern, the Eelex is a unique and highly capable boat that can easily compete in this segment, and with fast charge times of only 1hr 10mins, this electric option is class leading.

Built with a majority of sustainable materials, including a cockpit sole made from recycled cork, it is certainly the most environmentally conscious boat on this list.

frauscher-747-Mirage-25.1920-(1)

Frauscher 747 Mirage

The ultimate exotic speed boat

Austrian brand Frauscher has been building boats since 1927. Their smallest combustion engine boat at 7.47m in length is the starting point for the brand’s line of exotic peed boats. The boat featured in a Heineken mini movie chasing Daniel Craig as Bond driving a Riva .

Built to order with supercar styling, the Frauscher is James Bond-level iconic, with a single 350hp V8 producing a top speed of nearly 60 knots.

With exceptional handling and high-speed ride quality, exotic looks and top of the line build quality, the base price of €242,000 Euro is exclusive but justifiable.

An electric version of the hull, the 740 Mirage , is also available and is capable of just under 26 knots.

best-center-consoles-under-30-feet-axopar-22

Axopar 22 Spyder

Best overall speed boat

Literally breaking the mould, with its twin stepped hull, variable deadrise and Axopar’s trademark axe bow, the 22 Spyder is capable of over 45 knots from a relatively modest 200hp Mercury outboard.

Prices at around €50,000 and for this you get a super-stiff boat with excellent handling, a secure, dry ride and excellent fuel economy. The 22 is offered with multiple cockpit arrangements, a T-Top and engine options from 115hp.

A thoroughly modern alternative to the classic speed boat, the Axopar 22 Spyder is an excellent value runabout , however with all the options ticked, electric flushing head and seating for six, the Axopar’s potential extends beyond the realm of speed boats to potential become a fully-fledged family day boat .

Boat Test: 2024 Monterey Elite 30

  • By Randy Vance
  • August 28, 2024

Monterey Elite 30 running offshore

Nothing calls for change like an election year, and at this writing, Monterey is offering a bold new candidate for performance- and luxury-minded boating enthusiasts. We don’t use the word “unique” casually in referring to this sleek boat with sports-car flavors and cutting-edge European style—there’s nothing like it on the water.

The Elite 30’s appeal for votes begins with its square stem and sleek, tucked-to-the-stem, custom, polished stainless-steel anchor, a fresh look at a center helm, and a broad hardtop that straddles the cockpit port to starboard.

Monterey Elite 30 helm

We’ve seen square-stem boats in the US before, and they can have an alarming gift for stabbing into the next wave, spraying water all over the cockpit. In hard turns, doubling back over rolling wakes, we saw none of that bad behavior. Though the stem brings up the foreword freeboard in a near-vertical angle to the water, that freeboard doesn’t begin until the hull beneath it flares out broadly to keep the stem comfortably above the seas. The 21-degree hull deadrise at the transom cleaves chop for a comfortable ride without allowing it to roll excessively with shifting crewmembers, broad seas or crisp turns. The power of dual Mercury 250 hp V-8 outboards offers exciting acceleration—3.2 seconds to plane and 5.6 seconds to 30 mph. Our top speed was over 53 mph, and the joy of having all this in your throttle hand comes not just from the raw power, but also the unique centered helm that you’ll need to see to believe.

Monterey Elite 30 bow seating

Interior and Accessories

Helm styling is straight out of a performance sports car, with a pair of bucket seats separated by a center console that positions the throttle levers as comfortably as an eight-speed racing shifter and makes the joystick equally reachable. In top-level race boats, the throttle is so arranged as one-half the skippering crew manages the wheel while the throttle man reacts to the seas by varying rpm and 150 mph speeds. You could employ a throttle man in this vessel just for fun if you wish, but even at its maximum throttle speed, it handles like a charm, thrilling crewmembers while protecting them from unexpected changes to direction and acceleration.

Monterey Elite 30 cockpit console

The next remarkable plank to this compelling candidate’s platform is the design of the hardtop and windshield. Mention center console and hardtop, and you’ll picture enormous stanchions springing from the console fore and aft of the helm, blocking sight lines. The top may extend only halfway to the gunwales from the helm perimeter, leaving much unprotected from the sun. Not here. The hardtop rests on highly styled and brilliantly sturdy supports affixed to the gunwales, and it extends well forward of the racily raked windshield and aft over the lounge and bar back-to-back with the helm bucket seats. The safety-glass windshield is full width of the helm and bucket seats, but the windshield stops at the helm sides, allowing fresh air (and passengers) to pass through the cockpit on port or starboard passageways, refreshing us on our test day’s 95-degree, 95-percent-humidity summer swelter. The arrangement is a moderate blend of the extremes of a dual-console windshield and a typical fishing center console. Nothing better than a well-balanced candidate!

Monterey Elite 30 aft seating

We scoured the marketplace for a similar deck and helm plan to no avail, but the Four Winns H9 at a length overall of 29 feet, 11 inches brings a challenger with that vertical-stem style and with a comfortable standard bowrider setup ($343,025 base price with test power and hardtop). It too boasts a glass cockpit, and the hardtop lowers and raises on concealed ram screws to shrink storage height and can even be dropped down for more rain protection while running from a storm. Four Winns’ new designs from across the pond are the result of the company’s purchase by Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest boat manufacturer.

Monterey Elite 30 sunpad

Forward of the Monterey Elite’s windshield is another lounge that swings on hinges to reveal a comfortable changing room with a head and freshwater outlet that competes well with the Four Winns H9. There’s a ton of storage in drawers and cabinets on the Elite. While neither offers stand-up headroom, it’s deep enough aboard the Elite for comfortable movement. Door closed, the Elite’s forward lounge completes a triangular seating area with bow seats and padded coamings to allow crew to relax and chat.

Read Next: Monterey 255 SS OB

Monterey Elite 30 head

Aft of the helm is the back-to-back lounge that I mentioned earlier. Nestled up to it is a refreshment bar with sink and fresh water. There are large coolers beneath the lounge. This faces a large lounge astern, giving up to six people face-to-face conversation in comfortable seating. A transom door leads to a spacious swim platform. The seatbacks rock forward, allowing boaters to face the water over the transom, or lay the seatbacks down for a comfortable sun lounge.

In a market filled with big, strong dayboat candidates, the Elite 30 stands out on the campaign trail. It may well emerge as the new sheriff in town.

How Fast Can A Boat Go? 15 Examples of Average, Maximum, and Record Speeds!

Discover the thrilling speeds boats can achieve, from leisurely cruises to record-breaking dashes across the water.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The world record speed for a boat is 275.97 knots (317.58 mph or 511.09 km/h), held by Ken Warby since 1978.
  • Boat speeds vary by type, with maximum speeds ranging from 10 mph for houseboats to 114 mph for pontoon boats.
  • Safety and stability become concerns at high speeds, with design and engine power being key factors.
  • The average speed of a boat is often its most efficient and safe operating speed.
  • For recreational boating, speeds around 30 knots are considered fast but safe for certain boat types.

What is the maximum speed of a boat?

This question intrigues many in the marine industry. The fastest boat, according to the Guinness Book of Records, reached 275.97 knots (317.58 mph or 511.09 km/h), a record set by Ken Warby of Australia in 1978. Since then, only two official attempts to break this record have been made, both ending in tragedy due to instability at high speeds.

The boat's forward part called bow on the water at high speed cuts the water and makes ripples.

Boating is often associated with leisure, yet for some, speed is the ultimate goal. Boats, like cars and planes, can reach impressive speeds. The speed of a boat depends on its size, type, engine power, and design.

For example, cargo ships can travel at 24 knots (44 km/h) , while the fastest passenger catamaran recorded a speed of 58.2 knots. A typical pontoon can reach 36 knots (41 mph or 65 km/h), but the world’s fastest pontoon boat hit 99 knots (114 mph), powered by three Mercury Pro Max 300x engines.

How Do You Calculate The Average Speed Of A Boat ?

Calculating the average speed of a boat involves understanding its typical operational speed range, rather than aiming for maximum records. Boats are designed with optimal speed considerations, balancing the thrill of speed with safety. The average speed, such as 22 mph for pontoons, reflects a boat’s usual operational pace.

To determine this average speed, several methods can be employed:

  • Crouch’s Planning Speed Formula : This approach provides insights into hull speed, which is the maximum speed before the boat’s movement becomes inefficient due to wave resistance. It’s a theoretical limit, not an absolute cap, indicating when additional power results in diminishing speed returns.
  • GPS Measurement : A straightforward and accurate method, using GPS to track and calculate the boat’s speed over time.
  • Doppler Effect (Doppler Shift) and Correlation Velocity Log : These technologies measure the boat’s speed by analyzing changes in frequency or motion relative to water, offering a precise average speed calculation.

The average speed is essentially the mean of the boat’s most common operational speeds. For instance, if a boat frequently cruises between 18 and 24 mph, its average speed is calculated as (18+24)/2 = 21 mph. This figure represents a practical speed that balances performance with safety and efficiency.

Is 30 Knots Fast For A Boat?

Yes, 30 knots is considered fast for many types of boats, offering a thrilling experience while maintaining safety and efficiency under the right conditions.

Speed is a relative concept in boating, with 30 knots (approximately 34.5 mph or 55.5 km/h) representing a significant pace on the water. This speed is achievable and can be sustained safely by boats designed for swift movement, such as deck boats, pontoons, center console boats, and runabouts. These vessels can maintain 30 knots without compromising their stability or operational efficiency, making it an ideal speed for those seeking excitement on the water.

Conversely, for certain types of boats like tugboats, dinghies, trawlers, sailboats, and ski boats, 30 knots exceeds the recommended speed, posing safety risks and becoming economically inefficient due to increased fuel consumption. For larger vessels such as yachts and ferries, while 30 knots is within a safe operating speed, the fuel costs associated with maintaining this speed make it an impractical choice for regular operation.

What Happens If The Speed Is Too High?

What Happens If The Speed Is Too High?

For those who enjoy the pleasures of boating, it’s well-known that boats may feel unstable at rest. Typically boats gain stability as they pick up speed. However, this stability can be compromised when speeds become excessively high.

At rest, a boat’s stability is influenced by various factors, including its displacement mass, the free surface effect, metacentric height , and the conditions of the sea. These factors contribute to the boat’s ability to remain upright and balanced in water.

As a boat accelerates, its hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics evolve, altering the center of buoyancy, underwater volume, and pressure distribution. Initially, as speed increases, so does the boat’s restoring force, which helps maintain stability. Yet, there’s a threshold beyond which further acceleration leads to a decrease in this restoring force, making the boat increasingly unstable.

This instability is exacerbated by changes in the boat’s damping coefficients, both linear and nonlinear, which play critical roles in how a boat responds to rolling motions. As speed continues to rise, these changes can significantly impair the vessel’s stability, posing safety risks.

In summary, while moderate speeds can enhance a boat’s stability, pushing beyond certain limits introduces a risk of instability. Understanding and respecting these limits is crucial for safe boating practices.

How Fast Will A 200 HP Pontoon Go?

Pontoons, often associated with leisurely water activities, can surprisingly accommodate a range of water sports, from wakeboarding and tubing to water skiing. A 26-foot pontoon equipped with a 200 horsepower (HP) engine can achieve speeds up to 40 mph, demonstrating its capability beyond just leisure cruising. Even when loaded to capacity, such a pontoon can maintain a respectable speed of 30 mph, fitting well within the ideal speed range of 15 to 35 mph for various water sports.

While it may not be the fastest option on the water, a pontoon with this power level is more than adequate for engaging in your favorite water-based activities. It’s important to note, however, that the boat’s speed can be influenced by its load. Research indicates that for every additional 1000 pounds, the speed of a pontoon can decrease by approximately 12-15%.

For those considering an upgrade for more speed, remember that simply increasing the engine’s horsepower isn’t the only factor. According to a general guideline, doubling the boat’s speed may require quadrupling its power, although this is more of an estimation than a precise formula.

Enhancing a pontoon’s speed can also involve structural modifications, such as adding an extra pontoon to create a tritoon. This adjustment can improve the boat’s stability and potentially its speed, offering a practical approach to achieving a faster, more enjoyable ride on the water.

Boat speeds vary widely across different types, with the thrill of speed balanced against the need for safety and stability. Whether cruising leisurely or pushing the limits, understanding a boat’s capabilities and limits is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

renderings of ares yachts' new yacht project named spitfire

Ares Yachts announces 51m superyacht project in collaboration with Bannenberg & Rowell

Turkish yard Ares Yachts has revealed the first details of an upcoming superyacht project known as Spitfire. Measuring 50.6 metres, Spitfire is based on the same fast displacement hull dynamics of the shipyard's offshore patrol vessel series, the Ares 150 Bold.

Bannenberg & Rowell and Lateral Naval Architects have been confirmed as collaborators on the design, with construction scheduled to begin by 2025.

"This platform is constructed based on three fundamental principles: speed, lightweight construction, and iconic design proportions," said shipyard chairman Kerim Kalafatoğlu. "Combining a hull with offshore pedigree and the specifications of a superyacht platform opens up thrilling possibilities from both design and technical standpoints."

Leisure highlights include the vast beach club area, equipped with fold-down wings, a transformer platform and a transom capable of housing loose furniture and watertoys. The indoor space can be configured as a lounge and cinema space or as a fully-equipped gym and is designed with four large skylights to maximise natural light.

Accommodation is across five cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite on the main deck with 270-degree views and a private forward cockpit, complete with a Jacuzzi and an outdoor movie theatre.

Spitfire's design was guided by a desire for "flexible and informal living" according to the shipyard, with social spaces easily joined and separated at will using sliding glass walls and doors. An example is the main deck, whose dining room and lounge can be converted into a large indoor-outdoor area and the upper deck, where doors and a sunroof allow the indoor sofas to become part of the exterior bar, grill and sunloungers.

In an exclusive interview, Dickie Bannenberg told BOAT : "We've given her a very different layout without labouring the point of "Spitfire" and the heritage behind it. There are some nods to that. All the interior spaces are rechristened to break that link of the boring main saloon, owner's saloon, all those things. They've been ditched in favour of scramble spaces and bosses' quarters. It sets the story for that sort of boat and how she will be perceived."

Hybrid diesel-electric propulsion means the yacht can achieve a range of flexible options under power. This includes an hour's worth of propulsion on electric power alone, with an optional extra battery package pushing silent operations out to 11 hours, even in Mediterranean conditions.

Spitfire will be able to reach a maximum speed of 22 knots and a range of 2,200 nautical miles which can be upgraded to 3,500 nautical miles with extra tankage.

Y2calculate

Boat speed calculator.

Welcome to the Boat Speed Calculator! Have you ever wondered how fast your boat can go or what its maximum speed can be? This calculator is designed to assess the top speed of your boat based on its displacement and power, using a constant factor for different types of boats.

What is boat Speed

Boat speed is defined as how fast a boat can go or what its maximum speed can attain. You may wonder if boat speed is the same as vehicle speed, which is typically the ratio of distance traveled over time, but that is not the case. Boat speed is measured differently.

In the above formula, P represents the power of the boat engine, D represents the water displaced by the boat, and C is a constant factor that varies for different boats. This formula is known as Crouch’s formula.

Formula and Crouch constant

For a boat, the formula S = √(P / D) × C can be used to determine the speed, where:

  • S is the speed of the boat.
  • P is the power applied to propel the boat.
  • D is the drag acting against the boat.
  • C is a constant, which in this context is often referred to as the Crouch constant.

In marine engineering, the Crouch constant is used to relate the power and drag to the speed of a boat. This constant varies depending on the hull type, propeller efficiency, and other factors specific to the boat's design and operating conditions.

Determining the Crouch Constant

The Crouch constant C for boats typically has to be determined empirically or taken from established data for similar types of boats. Here is how you can approach determining or using the Crouch constant:

C = S / √(P / D)

Using this method, you can plug in known values of S , P , and D to compute C .

  • Reference Values : For certain classes of boats, there might be published values or typical ranges for the Crouch constant. You would need to refer to marine engineering texts, boat design manuals, or empirical studies to find these values.
  • Standard Values : For many planing boats, a typical value for the Crouch constant is around 150 to 200 in consistent units (e.g., knots for speed, horsepower for power, and pounds of drag). However, this can vary widely.

Example Calculation

Let's assume we have the following data for a specific boat:

  • Speed ( S ) = 20 knots
  • Power ( P ) = 300 horsepower
  • Drag ( D ) = 500 pounds

First, calculate the ratio P / D :

P / D = 300 hp / 500 lb = 0.6 hp/lb

Next, find √(P / D) :

√(0.6) ≈ 0.775

Now, use the formula to solve for C :

C = S / √(P / D) = 20 knots / 0.775 ≈ 25.8

So, in this example, the Crouch constant C would be approximately 25.8, assuming the units are consistent and appropriate for the formula.

What is Displacement or Drag against the boat (D)

Displacement is the weight of the water that a vessel displaces when it is afloat. It is an indicator of the vessel’s size and volume.

Types of Displacement :

  • Lightship Displacement :
  • The weight of the vessel without cargo, fuel, or other loads.
  • Loaded Displacement : The weight of the vessel with full cargo, fuel, crew, and any other supplies.

Measurement Units : Displacement is typically measured in metric tons (tonnes), kilograms, pounds, or cubic meters (for volume displacement).

Importance : Displacement is crucial for determining a vessel’s stability, buoyancy, and how much cargo or weight it can carry without sinking or floating improperly.

America’s Cup 2024: What are the AC75 boats and how do they work?

The world’s oldest international sports trophy, best yachtsmen and cutting-edge design and technology come together in Barcelona for the 37th edition of the America’s Cup.

Five boats – from Italy, the United States, Britain, Switzerland and France – will spend the coming weeks racing in the Mediterranean waves to decide who will earn the honour of trying to dethrone the mighty Emirates Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug.

As the two-time defender, the Kiwis chose Barcelona’s choppy waters as the venue and helped establish the rules and boat design for this edition. They also get a guaranteed spot in the final, to be held in October.

The results of three years of work and massive investment will now be put to the test.

“It is starting to get serious in a hurry. We are now racing for keeps,” Ben Ainslie, skipper of British team Ineos Britannia, said.

Here is everything we know about the boats – AC75s – that will be racing...

“Because Barcelona is quite a lightwind venue, you don’t actually want to design foils for going at 60 knots. Acceleration and manoeuvrability are more important. So in terms of top speeds I don’t think we will see anything radically different from the top speeds we saw in the last Cup in New Zealand. Somewhere around 50 knots. But these boats would smash the boats from last time if they actually raced. I guess it’s like Formula One cars. The new boats are much faster over a lap, but they gain that time through cornering speed and acceleration rather than on the straights.” – Giles Scott (Head of Sailing, Ineos Britannia)

This is the second iteration of the AC75 after they were also used in New Zealand at the 36th Cup.

The “75” in AC75 stands for 75-feet, the length of the boat. The boats are 16 feet wide.

The AC75 is a “foiling” monohull, which means it has only one hull which lifts up out of the water on hydrofoils - or “flies” - when the wind gets above a certain speed, typically around six knots.

Although the boats look very similar, there are various changes since the last Cup.

The rules have been tweaked partly to improve light-wind performance (frankly, it looked silly when the most technologically-advanced boats in the world fell off their foils in light winds in New Zealand in 2021, bobbing around helplessly) and partly to reduce crew numbers from 11 to eight for cost and performance reasons.

The move to reduce the crew means cycle power is again legalised, and “cyclors”, the hybrid sailor-cyclists introduced by Team New Zealand in Bermuda in 2017, return.

Length: 75 feet

Width: 16 feet

Height: 26.5m from the deck

Weight: 6,200kg

Max crew weight: 700kg

Top speed: 50 knots

Eight-man crews

Crews have been reduced from 11 to eight since the last Cup.

No boat will feature anyone crossing during manoeuvres. That will be the biggest visual change for spectators. Everyone stays where they are, with four sailors on each side of the boat.

The crews sit low in their pods, out of the airstream with only their helmeted heads exposed.

Each team is slightly different in how and where they deploy their eight men, but every team has a helm, a trimmer and two cyclors on either side of their boat.

The British team are unique in that their trimmer-pilots sit at the back of the boat in the aft pods, with the two cyclors between them and the helms in the forward pods.

The cyclors’ role is to provide hydraulic power to the boat’s systems, from the foil arms to the mainsail.

The Americans are outliers in that their cyclors are “recumbent”, meaning they are sitting/lying backwards, facing up towards the sky. This position sacrifices some power - around 10-20 per cent compared to traditional cyclists - but it does free up their hands to perform secondary functions.

But it is likely that on every boat, certainly the British one, the cyclors will all have secondary roles. On Britannia, two of those roles are critical functions but not necessarily sailing-skill oriented (these might be suitable for former rowers who do not have sailing backgrounds). Two you would want to put sailors in there.

F1 crossover

The crossover between America’s Cup and F1 is becoming ever greater. Not for nothing is sailing’s most elite competition becoming known as “F1 on water”.

Carbon-fibre composites, structural analysis, hydraulic systems, control systems, electronics, data analysis, hydrodynamics and aerodynamics are just some of the overlapping areas.

Ineos Britannia have a partnership with Mercedes F1 via joint owners Ineos. The sailing team has offices in Brackley and hundreds of Mercedes staff have been seconded to the sailing project. James Allison is Chief Technical Officer of both teams. Geoff Willis is Technical Director of Mercedes-AMG F1 Applied Science and INEOS Britannia.

Each boat is equipped with a pair of T-foils, on the end of “cant arms”. Around the size of an ironing board, the foils on the AC75 are capable of lifting a seven-tonne boat out of the water.

As in the last Cup, the mainsail is “twin skin”; two membranes held together. Teams are allowed to “endplate”, or seal the mainsail onto the deck of the hull (or platform). This provides performance gains by stopping air flowing under the bottom of the mainsail, which detrimentally reduces the pressure differential between the windward and leeward sides.

The AC75 rudder allows the boat to change pitch, or trim, by providing lift. This change in pitch moves the stern of the boat closer to the ground, which increases the angle of attack on the main foils. The foils provide lift, which moves the entire platform up.
