SailGP: Five things to watch in San Francisco

Published on July 11th, 2024 by Editor -->

The 13-event schedule for SailGP Season 4 concludes July 13-14 in San Francisco, USA. It will be the final racing for the 10-boat fleet, with the top three teams in the season standing advancing to one last race in which the winner claims the overall season title and the $2 million USD prize. Here are five things to watch for when racing gets underway:

Spain vs France in fleet racing It’s a congested top half of the leaderboard, with just five points separating Spain in third place and France in fourth. This means there’s everything to play for when fleet racing begins, with France gunning to beat Spain and steal their spot in the Grand Final. Can Spain hold the French off? Or will Quentin Delapierre’s squad swoop in and claim fleet racing victory?

Will New Zealand convert stellar season into Championship title? It’s been an incredible season for Peter Burling’s New Zealand, which is the only team so far qualified for the winner-takes-all, $2 million Grand Final. But the Kiwis came so close to winning the Season 3 title, losing out to fierce rivals Australia in the final seconds of the race. Will they choke again, or can they hold on to claim the ultimate victory?

Can the Australians battle back to claim a 4th Championship title Triple champions Australia meanwhile have had an uncharacteristically lukewarm season, with only one event win despite being in eight Finals. But driver Tom Slingsby has reemphasized that the Aussies have ‘never been beaten in San Francisco’. Will this remain true in Season 4’s showdown?

sailboat racing on tv

Will other teams play spoiler? According to the points, it’s mathematically probable that two teams out of Australia, France, and Spain will join New Zealand in the Grand Final showdown. But points are tight – with Canada and Emirates GBR just four behind France. Could stellar performances from these teams, combined with poor performances from others, completely reshuffle the leaderboard when racing gets underway?

Who will come at the bottom of the fleet? It’s been another tough season for Switzerland, and a steep learning curve for Germany in their debut season. With just two points separating Switzerland in 10th and Germany in 9th, there’s all to play for to avoid being the team at the bottom of the fleet.

SailGP’s Season 4 Grand Final in San Francisco takes place July 13-14, with racing from 2.30 pm PDT.

Real-time Wind Overlay Feature Added to Cup Broadcast

 • By America's Cup Media
 • August 22, 2024

WindSight IQ

Capgemini and the America’s Cup Media revealed WindSight IQ, the product innovation they will bring to the broadcast of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup , as part of their global partnership announced earlier this year. For the first time, viewers and race commentators will be able to actually see the wind and how it varies across the racecourse in real-time. Furthermore, a yacht simulator will take the wind data and calculate the optimal routes around the course, enabling commentators and viewers to predict what teams on the water should do or analyze how teams could have won a race. A feat of engineering and design, WindSight IQ means that commentators and viewers will have more data and insight into the pinnacle event of international sailing than is available to the competing teams on the water.

Viewing habits are changing, a recent study by the Capgemini Research Institute found that 84 percent of fans say emerging technologies have enhanced their overall viewing experience. With 77 percent of Gen Z and 75 percent of Millennials preferring to watch sport outside of live venues, the viewing experience on screen is more important than ever. Wind patterns are a key factor in sailing that can change the course of a race and make the difference between winning or losing. For the first time, these wind patterns will be revealed and visualized by WindSight IQ to bring a whole new dimension to the race experience for fans and broadcasters.

“WindSight IQ is an innovation America’s Cup Media have been evaluating for a long time now, our objective has been to take another quantum leap in using technology to increase the understanding of sailing and the intricacies that the sailors at the pinnacle of our sport have to conquer. But to achieve our objective we needed to find a partner that was equally driven by pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation which Capgemini clearly were. So, for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup WindSight IQ is a significant advancement for the consumption of our sport,” explains Grant Dalton, CEO of the America’s Cup Event.

WindSight IQ

“Four elements determine the race winner: the boat design, the team, the water, and the wind. Before and during the race, commentators will now be able to see the real-time wind patterns and explain to the viewers the options for the competing yachts. Being able to see the unseen wind and compare teams’ actual performances and tactical decisions to the optimum routes, will mean audiences can follow and engage in the racing on a whole new level. We are really looking forward to the impact WindSight IQ will bring to this year’s Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup viewing experience.”

Due to the technical challenge, no-one has been able to accurately demonstrate visualization of the wind in real-time yacht racing conditions – until now. Combining its expertise in technology, engineering, data and design, Capgemini and America’s Cup Media, the host broadcaster for the event, will use LiDAR (light detection and ranging), sensor fusion and scientific computation to reveal the wind in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) graphics. The wind field data is also fed in real-time to a yacht simulator and used to create a live ‘ghost boat’ simulation that can be projected onto the racecourse through AR and VR graphics. It will show the optimal path that the crews should take given the measured variations in wind pressure, sheers, orientation, and speed.

To accurately collect raw wind data, three LiDARs have been positioned along the Barcelona waterfront overlooking the racecourse, scanning the full race area. Each LiDAR has an average 6.5km scanning range up to a maximum of 12km, and measures wind speeds, every 1.5 meters from 0 to 12km, up to 38m/s (73 knots) with an accuracy of <0.1m/s. WindSight IQ supplements the LiDARs with wind data directly from the racing yachts and buoys’ wind sensors. All these data streams are fused using innovative algorithms to enable a wind field to be created over the entire racecourse. The wind field is refreshed every second based on the sensor measurements and predictive wind models.

“Through technological innovation, combining laser sensor technology with advanced engineering and new visualization techniques, WindSight IQ brings together the digital and physical worlds,” explains Keith Williams, Capgemini’s Chief Engineer for WindSight IQ. “The wind plays a decisive role in the teams’ choices during the race, and by visualizing it, viewers can now see and comprehend the detailed pattern of wind speed and direction across the racecourse, as well as the best potential paths to be followed. The core challenge of this innovation lies in combining both engineering and design; accurately capturing the intricate patterns of the wind and also portraying it in a way that fans and commentators can easily see and understand. Our goal is to make the coverage of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup more captivating and immersive than it has ever been.”

WindSight IQis a turnkey solution designed, built and operated through a partnership between America’s Cup Media and Capgemini, combining its expertise in technology, engineering, data and design to feed the America’s Cup Media broadcast systems with real-time wind field visuals and AR/VR designs. The three LiDARs used as part of the solution are supplied by LUMIBIRD.

America’s Cup format, rule changes explained as world’s oldest sporting battle resumes

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – MARCH 12: Emirates Team New Zealand chases Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team in America's Cup Race #3 between Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team on Auckland Harbour on March 12, 2021 in Auckland, New Zealand. (Photo by Fiona Goodall/Getty Images)

The America’s Cup, the world’s oldest international sporting trophy, returns this year for its 37th edition.

First contested in 1851, the a 183-year-old sporting challenge has become one of the most highly-anticipated sailing events on the calendar, with fast-paced racing and engineering at the fore of its appeal.

After winning the previous America’s Cup in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand dictated the location and sections of the rules of engagement for this year’s competition, which will be held in Barcelona.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2024 America’s Cup ahead what promises to be a thrilling preliminary regatta, starting Thursday night (AEST).

The America’s Cup and the Challenger Selection Series, this year called the Louis Vuitton Cup, is comprised of head-to-head match races where two boats sail against each other.

Emirates Team New Zealand, known as the Defender having won the previous competition, earned immediate qualification for the America’s Cup match, while their opponent will be determined in the Louis Vuitton Cup, which runs from August 29 to October 7.

The Louis Vuitton Cup winner will be decided after a series of round robins, semi-finals and finals, with five boats competing this year.

The America’s Cup match, contested between the Defender and a challenging vessel, is a best-of-13 series with one point awarded for each victory. The first team to win seven points is declared champions, becoming the Defender of the 38th America’s Cup.

Each competing vessel must be designed and built solely in the country that it represents, while this year marks the first time a New Zealand team has chosen to defend an America’s Cup win overseas.

PRELIMINARY REGATTA

Before the Louis Vuitton Cup gets underway, the six boats will compete in their new AC75s at the third and final Preliminary Regatta in Barcelona.

Points won at the Preliminary Regatta do not count towards progression or elimination, but it gives the teams an opportunity to get a glimpse at the competition before the Louis Vuitton Cup.

The Preliminary Regatta gets underway in Barcelona on Thursday, running through to Sunday.

HOW TO WATCH

Every race in the Louis Vuitton Cup and America’s Cup will be shown live on Fox Sports and streaming platform Kayo Sports.

Coverage gets underway this Thursday at 10pm AEST.

The AC75s, an innovative 75-foot foiling monohull first introduced at the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021, will return this year for their second outing albeit with considerable tweaks and improvement.s.

“When you look at the boat now, the boat that we’re going to be launching soon (compared) to what we had last time, to us, is a big step on,” Emirates Team New Zealand’s chief operating officer Kevin Shoebridge said.

“There’s a lot of stuff from the outside that you’ll never see – the control systems and everything, the technique and how you sail the boat – a lot of that stuff you won’t see, but to us there’s been some big steps forward.

“I would expect all the boats are going to be a big step forward, and who knows? What typically happens with these rules is when you go from one iteration to the next, slowly they all start to merge together. So, they may look similar.”

RULE CHANGES

There are slight changes to the boat regulations this year, with crew numbers reduced from 11 to eight on the foiling monohulls.

To reduce costs, teams will only be permitted to build one AC75 for the America’s Cup, while national rules have become more strict — 100 per cent of the race crew for each competitor has to be a passport holder of the country of the team’s yacht club, or have been physically present in that country for 18 months between March 2018 and March 2021.

That’s the case for Australian sailing great Tom Slingsby, who will feature as part of the American Magic team having previously hlelped Oracle Team USA to America’s Cup glory.

Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Boat Race set for this weekend

by Jennifer Weiser

The Missouri State Highway Patrol shared this map, showing where the no-wake, idle-speed restrictions will be on August 24th and 25th.{ } (Image from Missouri State Highway Patrol.)

The 2024 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Boat Race will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The race will take place from the 33-mile mark to the 35-mile mark of the lake.

Racing will begin at 8:30 each morning.

There will be no-wake and idle speed restrictions from the 31.5-mile mark to the 36-mile mark of the Osage arm of the lake beginning at 8:00 am each day.

On Saturday only, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the restrictions will be extended to the 21.5-mile mark.

On Sunday, the restrictions will be in place until an hour after the last race of the day.

Boaters should expect congestion in the area.

Anyone who wants to watch the race will need enough anchor lines for water in excess of 100 feet.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Jason Crites encourages boaters to use extra caution when leaving the area due to the heavy boat traffic.

Eureka Had a Story To Share on 'Canada's Drag Race vs the World 2'

The Big Picture

 • Eureka's inspiring journey through sobriety was a key aspect of her return to the competition.
 • Eureka connected with international queens La Kahena and Miss Fiercalicious during the competition.
 • The reading challenge in this season had a Princess Fiona-Gate moment that ruffled Eureka's feathers.

Eureka! You found it! After competing three times on the American franchise, Eureka returned to the reality competition once again, this time up north. With a new chapter in the life of Eureka to share, this time around was a different experience for the RuPaul's Drag Race star. Having worked through sobriety, Eureka was able to inspire viewers all while showcasing her fierce drag. Before competing for the fourth time, Eureka spent three seasons as one of the co-hosts of We're Here .

Canada's Drag Race vs the World 2 is the fierce competition that unites nine global Drag Race queens as they compete for the title of Queen of the Motherpucking World. Hoping to snatch the crown, the cast includes Canada's Drag Race 's Lemon, Miss Fiercalicious , and Tynomi Banks , RuPaul's Drag Race 's Alexis Mateo, Kennedy Davenport , and Eureka, RuPaul's Drag Race UK 's Cheryl and Le Fil , and Drag Race France 's La Kahena .

Canada's Drag Race: Canada vs. the World

Top drag queens from around the globe compete against Canadian favorites in a series of dazzling challenges. With jaw-dropping performances and fierce runway looks, they battle it out for the ultimate crown, showcasing the diversity and talent of the international drag community.

Eureka Had a Connection With the Host

Eureka first introduced herself as a competitor on the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race . Unfortunately, her time on the season was cut short as she suffered a knee injury. RuPaul invited her back to compete in the following, where she was a runner-up. With the status Eureka formed during her time on the show, she came back as an all-star for RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 6 . So what was it about Canada that intrigued her to try to snatch the crown for the fourth time? "It was really the idea of wanting to compete in Canada because of my experiences in Canada. As well as just what they've done for diversity and the queer community, and transness and their acceptance and such. I had a really great experience," she said. "I love giving back to the franchise because it's given me so much. On top of, you know, as my transness, I've never had an opportunity yet really to show this part of myself on Drag Race. So that was also something that fueled me to want to return." The timing also just happened to be right. Eureka said that sometimes things come into your life at the right moment, and this was the right moment.

With three seasons standing before RuPaul as the head judge, this time, it was for an old friend, Brooke Lynn Hytes . Eureka shared, "Honestly, it felt great. You know, I have a past with Brooklyn before Drag Race where she was competing at National Entertainer of the Year. Her and her mother was so kind to me...I was watching the final night. She got first runner-up. She did her Black Swan talent. I love ballet. I was just obsessed. So, you know, I've obviously had experiences and relationship-building with her since, but I look back on those memories. That was another reason that made it really special for me to compete. "

While she did have American queens alongside her when she entered the Werk Room, it was two international queens that Eureka formed a close bond with: La Kahena and Miss Fiercalicious. Eureka simply joked, "Yeah, I connected with La Kahena and Fierce because they're both bitches." She said, "They're actually both very outspoken, but sweet and funny. And, you know, I also relate with people that I feel like are on the outs a little bit because I know what that's like. I've always kind of felt that way in my life. No matter what success I've had, I've always felt so different. I think we all have a little bit of that. For me, La Kahena was very chill. She was on her own. You know, I felt like Alexis and Kennedy were like super close already, first day. Everyone else was like either UK or Canada. And it just seemed like me and La Kahena fit, and I wanted her to have a buddy and I wanted one too...And then Fierce, you know, honestly, I always make best friends with the other pretty girl in the room. Cause you know, us gorgeous girls got to stick together. I felt like we both kind of were having issues with our home country girls. Cause you know, we're like competitive, reactionary, maybe easy to provoke. So it just seems kind of natural for us to kind of click. It just kind of happened naturally for us to kiki and support each other."

Eureka Spills the Tea on Princess Fiona-Gate

For the first time ever, the library was open in a very different manner. Long-time fans of RuPaul's Drag Race are familiar with the iconic mini challenge known as the reading challenge. Inspired by the documentary Paris is Burning , the queens are tasked to read one another to filth. For this season, things were a bit different as they each selected a rival to shade. With the assistance of guest judge Samantha Bee , Eureka was able to take her reading talent to the stage as she battled Cheryl. But there was one moment that rattled Eureka. Princess Fiona-Gate. Viewers saw Eureka try the joke out during her coaching session, but it was ultimately Cheryl who used it in the challenge. So what had happened? "So listen, I'm not sure, but I really think that we were set up to be honest. Because I did not have this joke as a part of my set. And Alexis Mateo came to me. It was like, 'Hey girl, here's a joke for you.' And apparently Lemon went to Cheryl and did the same thing. So I'm wondering, I guess we'll find out. But I'm wondering if this was like a saboteur moment or not. I'm not sure. But like when she said it, it just immediately was like, 'Oh sh-. Well, f- you, ugly princess.' I don't know what to say now. I don't know. It was weird," she laughed.

Reading and throwing shade are important parts of the drag and queer community. Eureka noted, " I think it's just the way that we kiki. We pick at each other because it makes us laugh one. But two, it helps us build on insecurities that we already have. So it's actually really sweet what we do when it comes to reading, but also like, it's fun because girl it's funny! It makes you laugh! It's like literally, you're cracking jokes at each other constantly. If you think about it, no matter who you are, whether you're in the queer community or not, picking at each other is fun. And it's a part of all cultures, especially friendship cultures. So I think in the drag community, it's just a way for us to show each other very quickly that we like each other, and we get along. If you can laugh and poke at each other and not get offended, just like in any other, you know, heteronormative, queer, whatever. It shows you like oh, I can trust you."

How RuPaul's ‘DragCon 2024’ Unites a Community

RuPaul's DragCon is 100% pure love.

It Was Important for Eureka To Share Her Story of Sobriety

As noted, Eureka was able to share a new part of herself on this edition of the show. Eureka opened up to her sisters in the Werk Room as she spoke about her journey through sobriety and transition. It was an important part of why Eureka was back again. "Being able to share my journey has been extremely important for me just because, at first, I got a lot of negative feedback whenever I went public about being in rehab. After anyway. And it comes with such a stigma that people tend to not let you live past. So, finally coming into a place after being in recovery for three years, I realized that it's kind of my opportunity to explain myself in a way where my transness and my sobriety go hand in hand. Through sobriety, I was able to understand through the work that I did in rehab, things like that, that my transness was a big issue for me. Not only losing my mother and grandmother, but it was also a lot of the dysphoria that I was dealing with. "

She said it caused her to numb, which affected her daily life and happiness. "Once I realized that it was based a lot around me, not living in my truth, it's also helped me survive in a different way. Without having to depend on drugs or alcohol or sex or social media attention, so on and so forth," she shared. She acknowledged that we all have those little addictions and such, but for her, it was her chance to show the world how important it is to move past those parts in life and showcase change and growth. "It makes me someone who's survived something really important that helped me become the person I am today and I think that's something that's missed a lot when it comes to stories told like mine." Eureka was able to share this version of herself that the world hadn't seen on this platform.

To end our chat, we discussed the discourse regarding her infamous high kick she threw into the ballad during the first lip sync of the season. So are high kicks allowed in ballads? "Oh mama, listen, do a high kick any day of the week. If you can get your leg up to your motherf-n neck, you kick that bitch any day you can hang until you can't kick it no more! That's my f- motto." And there you have it! The gospel according to Eureka. She may not have snatched the crown this time around, she continued to leave an imprint on the franchise. To hear the full interview with Eureka, listen to Block Talk on all your favorite podcast platforms.
