Three-time Rolex Sailor of the Year Tom Slingsby gives us a glimpse into a new sort of sailing.
Ever wanted a new sport to get into? Perhaps one that combines adrenaline, high-tech thrills and spills, and exotic locations? SailGP might be for you. Think of it as Formula 1 on water, with ten nations battling it out in 50-foot-long, 80-foot-tall high-tech racing catamarans powered entirely by the wind. But here’s the thing: They don’t sail. They fly—and fast.
SailGP, founded in 2019, is the brainchild of billionaire sailing nut Larry Ellison and New Zealander Sir Russell Coutts, arguably the most famous and successful competitive sailor in the sport’s history. From the get-go, the pair’s idea was not to create just another race series for yachty insiders but a global, spectator-friendly event that could capitalize on the new advances in sail racing afforded by foiling technology. This year, the season reached 193 million viewers, up 48 percent from 2023. Taking more than a little inspiration from Formula 1, SailGP set out to attract non-sailors to this burgeoning sport, partly by staging the races in nontraditional waters, like Abu Dhabi, Bermuda, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Since its inception, the SailGP competition has been sponsored by Rolex, which has long been a supporter of all manner of sailing. Last year, the brand extended its support by ten more years. As well as a $2 million purse for his team, the winning skipper at the grand finale, which this season took place below the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, receives a titanium Yacht-Master II.
Many of sailing’s luminaries are also key members of Rolex’s Testimonee program, evangelizing for both sailing and its unique connection with ocean sustainability. One of them is Tom Slingsby, helm and CEO of SailGP’s Team Australia and three-time Rolex Sailor of the Year. At the top of his game, Slingsby, 39, has carried off three of the four SailGP championships for Team Australia since it began in 2019.
Foiling, just a decade-and-change old, has transformed competitive sailing. Put simply, thanks to the physics of hydrostatic pressure, by sailing on carbon-fiber blades, an entire 50-foot racing catamaran can lift itself out of the water, reducing the drag coefficient to almost nothing and producing speeds unimaginable just 15 years ago. Often this means the boat moves three, even four times faster than the wind.
“You see spectators’ faces when you go past them doing nearly 100 kilometers an hour on the water and at four times the wind speed,” Slingsby says. “It’s unbelievable.” Foiling has almost doubled competitive sailing’s top speed—and it’s getting faster all the time. Not that speed is really the aim here.
“I don’t think it’s SailGP’s goal to set an outright speed record or anything like that,” Slingsby explains. “What we want is a good racing product. Our hydrofoils don’t need to just go super fast in a straight line; they need to go around a racetrack efficiently, to take off in light airs and sail well in strong airs, and be maneuverable when tacking and jibing.”
But getting there requires both skill and experience in a fast-evolving sport, as well as an array of technology and data gathering. So called “aviation officers” on each team have one job: to keep the race boat flying on its foils in constantly changing conditions. When they don’t, interesting things can happen.
Slingsby will probably race any boat you put in front of him. There’s a reason for that. “In the Olympics in 2008,” he says, “I went in as a favorite to win the Laser gold medal and I choked—basically I finished 22nd. Then my good friend Nathan Outteridge [a fellow Australian and helm of SailGP Team Switzerland] was leading going into the final race and ended up coming away with fifth and missing a medal. We were both really depressed. We were sitting having a beer after the Olympics and he said, ‘We’ve just got to sail more. Let’s just sail every type of boat, learn every type of skill, and that way we will be hard to beat.’”
Slingsby (and Outteridge) did just that, diving headfirst into the nascent sport of foiling at just the right time. Both went on to win Olympic golds.
“I’m very fortunate that I actually got to be part of sailing before foiling came along,” Slingsby says. “I went to the Olympics in Lasers, probably the simplest boat in the world, and then I was there when the America’s Cup boats started hydrofoiling. Now I’m here now with SailGP, the fastest and most amazing foiling league in the world, and it’s really taking our sport to new levels.”
Unlike Formula 1, there’s a deliberately bare-bones vibe to the infrastructure of SailGP to make the whole competition as environmentally sustainable as possible. The tagline is, after all, “Powered by Nature.”
“SailGP is at the top of the sport,” Slingsby explains, “so it filters down through the whole of sailing. We see and deal with ocean health every day; we see it much more than, say, tennis players do, or F1 drivers, or track athletes. We’re out there dealing with Mother Nature; it’s probably just us and surfers. It’s our responsibility to raise awareness.”
Off the water, the Impact Awards challenge GP teams to come up with ingenious ways to reduce waste and save on resources. For instance, the race catamarans—which all have the same design—were designed so they can be disassembled and fit into a single 40-foot container.
The benefit of one-design racing is that it levels the playing field. Skill becomes much more pivotal. Each boat has around 160 electronic sensors, tracking every setting of the boat, especially below the waterline, where the angle of attack of the foils is critical. Win or lose, at the end of a race day, all those recorded settings are beamed straight to the cloud and are immediately accessible to the other teams and their tacticians.
“Initially, I really didn’t like it,” says Slingsby of the data sharing. “We were the top team, and every day we’d go out and be losing advantage to our competitors because they would see our data from that day, and they were getting closer and closer. But now, I think it’s just good for SailGP. The racing is so much tighter.”
Tighter, but also more human. While material failures account for a proportion of crashes, decisions made by a skipper in a split second—or simply a split second too late—can throw out a whole race.
Another curiosity of SailGP is the way the finals are set up. The point system gives the race winner ten points, second place receives nine points, and so on. But the finals are where it gets interesting. The grand-finale weekend consists of five qualifying fleet races featuring all ten teams, and then the final race itself. Only the top three teams get to race in the final, with their seasonal scores effectively erased. Which means a team could be third overall for the season and still win the grand finale in the last few minutes of the season. It makes for a gripping race.
That’s precisely what happened last month in San Francisco, where third-place Spain, skippered by Diego Botin, edged out league leaders New Zealand and Australia in a race that lasted just ten minutes.
Slingsby, for his part, is currently in Barcelona, where that other great sailing race, the America’s Cup, is underway. SailGP’s 2024-25 season kicks off in November in Dubai. Two new teams are rumored to be joining the fray, attracted by the unique approach to racing established for SailGP.
“The America’s Cup is a development game,” says Slingsby. “You design your own boat and you’re just trying to make it the fastest you possibly can on the water. Essentially, you’re in training boats for three years and then you get three or four months in your actual race boat. You really do one important event in four years. With SailGP, we get to race for a full season every year. So for sure, SailGP is my favorite thing to do, because it’s consistent racing every month. Me, I’m a racer.”

Italy F1 GP Auto Racing Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc of Monaco walks in the paddock at the Monza racetrack, in Monza, Italy, Thursday, Aug.29, 2024. The Formula one race will be held on Sunday. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno) (Luca Bruno/AP)
MONZA, Italy — (AP) — There's a new track, new colors and renewed confidence for Ferrari as the Formula 1 team heads into its home race at Monza.
Ferrari did better than expected at last weekend's Dutch Grand Prix , where Charles Leclerc earned a second straight podium finish and teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. finished fifth after starting 10th.
It was a pleasant showing at a race meant to mitigate damages ahead of planned car upgrades at this week's Italian Grand Prix.
The morale boost comes for a Ferrari team that started 2024 fighting for wins but gradually dropped out of contention. Leclerc was quick to temper expectations following the decent showing in Zandvoort.
“I don’t let the last two races change our expectations,” he said. “We are in a difficult moment for the team. We are struggling a little bit with pace at the moment. It was a good race. In Spa it was good as well.
"Here, it should be a bit more in the direction of Spa, so hopefully we’ll be a bit more in the fight for the podium. However, for the win, I don’t think we quite have that yet.”
Ferrari won only one of the past 13 Italian GPs; Leclerc delighted the passionate red-clad fans in 2019.
Since then, the Italian Scuderia has managed only a second for Leclerc in 2022 and a third by Sainz last year.
“I wouldn’t say the feeling is that we must do better,” Leclerc said. “However, there’s definitely a huge motivation because it’s not only a normal weekend that starts from the Thursday to the Sunday, but it starts already from Monday in Maranello where we have so many tifosi (fans), and that motivates everybody.
“It seems, and it looks like, we’ve had a pretty strong car with a very low-downforce package even in the last few years where performance was not as good. That’s positive, because it’s our home race and as much as it’s giving exactly the same amount of points as other races, emotionally speaking, and for the whole team, it’s definitely a special one.”
Monza is one of the most historic circuits in F1 and the so-called ‘Temple of Speed’ has undergone considerable changes this year.
In modernisation works costing more than 20 million euros ($22 million), the track was completely resurfaced for the first time since 1922 and so will have a much darker appearance. Moreover, some of the iconic kerbs have been modified, much to the dismay of several drivers.
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo inspected the track by bicycle on Thursday and said, “I can’t say I’m that impressed because some elements have lost some of the character of the circuit.
“Maybe it’s just as a driver, because we drive it and experience it, but kerbs and things like this make a circuit unique. … Part of Monza is that it was old school, and now that’s gone. The resurfacing looks great, the asphalt looks really nice, but the kerbs, I’m a bit disappointed in.”
The fans will turn Monza's stands into a sea of red, and the Ferrari cars will be their usual red, but the drivers will wear black racing suits. The new look comes after Ferrari decided “to celebrate what represents the state of the art in racing car construction: Carbon fiber, a material … which has allowed exceptional advances in safety.”
Verstappen finds himself in an unusual position.
The three-time defending champion is without a victory in five straight races — his longest winless run since 2020 — and has seen his lead trimmed to 70 points by McLaren's Lando Norris, with nine races remaining.
Compare that to the Italian GP last year when Verstappen secured a record 10th straight win in a season he simply mastered.
“I am enjoying it, yeah," he said of this season. "Would I like to win more? Yes, of course. But I also knew that, you know, a season like we had last year is very unrealistic.
“Did I expect it to be like this? Not really, with, of course, how we ended and how we started. It’s up to us to just try and make it better. I know everyone is working flat out to make it better.”
Lewis Hamilton led the way in the second practice on Friday in his last race at Monza in a Mercedes before he makes the switch to Ferrari next year.
Hamilton was just 0.003 seconds ahead of Norris and 0.103 faster than Sainz.
Verstappen — who topped the first hourlong practice session, ahead of Leclerc and Norris — was only 14th fastest in the second after his flying lap was halted by red flags, which came out after Kevin Magnussen crashed into the barriers.
The first practice also had to be halted for nearly 15 minutes after teenager Kimi Antonelli crashed in a Mercedes just 10 minutes into his first outing in an F1 car at a race weekend.
Franco Colapinto is in his first proper weekend as a Williams race driver, after replacing the axed Logan Sargeant . The Argentine — who drove a practice session for Williams at the British GP last month — was 17th fastest in both sessions at Monza.

BARCELONA, Spain — Emirates Team New Zealand is working to replace a piece of the hull of its yacht that was damaged in a crane incident after its first warmup race at the America's Cup. The mishap happened late Thursday when the 75-foot yacht named "Taihoro" was being removed from the water. Team leader Grant Dalton initially said his team may have to sit out the opening phase of competition. But on Friday he said they could be back much sooner. Either way, the time lost shouldn't derail their title defense since the Kiwis are guaranteed a spot in the finals as the defending champions.

Breaking News: Maryland Supreme Court reinstates Adnan Syed murder conviction and orders new hearing

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Emirates Team New Zealand worked Friday to replace a piece of the hull of its boat that was damaged in a crane incident after the opening race of its America’s Cup title defense .
The mishap happened late on Thursday when the 75-foot Taihoro yacht was being removed from the water after racing.
Team leader Grant Dalton said the multimillion-dollar boat fell some six meters (20 feet) onto the support cradle on their team base inside Barcelona’s old port. Dalton said the impact sounded “like a bomb went off.” He and skipper Peter Burling inspected the boat after a crew had lifted the tips of its critically important hydrofoils off the concrete ground.
Dalton said Thursday that the repair job could keep his team sidelined throughout the double round-robin phase that lasts through next week.
But less than 24 hours later Dalton said that enough work had been done overnight to give him hope they could be back on the water sooner than he had first expected.
“It’s possible that we could be back out by tomorrow,” the CEO of the team and race said.
“I think that were pretty lucky. If it had fallen 200 millimeters to other side it could have been a whole bunch worse, but it fell into the cradle, perfectly into the cradle,” he said. “The guys have literally cut out a hole, it looks like the Titanic.”
Missing any racing time is a setback, but it should be manageable as long as the boat can be refitted in the coming days or even weeks since as defending champions the Kiwis are guaranteed a spot in the finals held in October.
The incident means that New Zealand didn’t participate in the two races it was scheduled for Friday. That won’t impact the standings since its races don’t count; they are essentially only for practice to keep the team sharp for the final.
American Magic got its first point and handed Switzerland’s Alinghi Red Bull Racing a second straight defeat after a race where both teams struggled to find wind and spent long periods of time inching along in the water. The race control shortened the race from six to four legs to keep it from dragging on. It still lasted 31 minutes.
“It wasn’t pretty at all. It’s just tough conditions,” American Magic helmsman Tom Slingsby said. “I would have loved to foil across the line, but we just did what we had to do to get the win.”
The Americans were also supposed to face Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli later in on Friday but the race was postponed due to low winds.
One of the five challengers will be eliminated after the opening phase before the final four enter a two-round playoff series.

Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.
By Michael J. de la Merced
Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.
A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.
Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .
Here’s what we know about the passengers.
Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.
In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.
HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.
Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.
An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.
The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.
Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.
Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.
“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.
Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.
The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.
Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting, and Kitty Bennett and Susan Campbell Beachy contributed research.
