New RYA School in the Grenadines

Sail Grenadines

Sail Grenadines were particularly interested in our online RYA Day Skipper theory course to supplement their practical RYA Day Skipper training. Rather than students spend their time learning the theory in a classroom on holiday, students take their time at home beforehand getting the theory out of the way. Then once in the Grenadines, students can spend their valuable Caribbean time doing just the practical with the wind in their face and hands on the helm and without the pressure of study and testing.

The RYA Day Skipper practical is taught over a period of 6 days. During that time, students learn to become a competent skipper and since the environment is the gorgeous waters of the Caribbean and the Grenadines, students also gain a good insight into what to takes to be a successful yacht charter skipper.

So here is a cool suggestion, knock out the RYA Day Skipper theory course online at home in your own time. Then book a sailing training holiday with you and a friend, lover, or family member to do the practical course in the Grenadines with Sail Grenadines or you can go by yourself and meet some fun like minded people. You’ll spend 6 days having a blast. Our team here at NauticEd can make the reservation for you, so that you are properly integrating the theory and practical.

Inquire about the RYA Day Skipper practical course in the Grenadines here.

Update: Katie emailed me today their schedule for RYA courses in the upcoming season.

So here it is. Feel free to contact us about any of these days 6 day courses. Most start at 9:30 am in Bequia Island unless noted but we can arrange a pick up in St. Vincent the evening before.

Prices are $1000 low season, 1350 mid season and $1500 high season. 20% discount if you bring a friend and share a cabin. Additional expenses are food, customs, and incidental mooring fees shared.

RYA training around the world

Since RYA Training began in 1970, its international reach has expanded well beyond UK waters, with courses now available at over 2,400 RYA recognised training centres across 58 countries worldwide.

Although the weather, sea conditions and local marine laws may vary between locations, the syllabus of each course is standardised. Comprehensive instructor training and impeccable training centre standards mean that the quality of teaching is outstanding across the board. So, while the climate may be considerably different for an RYA Day Skipper course  held in the UK compared to the equivalent in Australia, you can be certain that the teachings will be the same.

With RYA training now renowned the world over for its reputable teaching standards and RYA qualifications considered a trusted gauge of high-level sailing competence on a global scale, RYA courses are creating waves of change within the sport internationally.

Here, we speak to RYA training centres across the globe to find out about how RYA training has impacted the development of international sailing activities.

RYA Training in Europe

Fancy learning how to skipper a sailing yacht in exciting new waters or want to complete the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course  in sunnier climes? Well, with over 600 RYA training centres located in Europe, there are plenty of schools to choose from.

Corfu Sea School offers a wide range of courses for its students including RYA Day Skipper and Competent Crew.

Steve Hills, the school’s Principal, and an RYA Yachtmaster™ Instructor and Examiner, tells us that being an RYA recognised training centre has really helped to raise awareness of the school in the local area. Furthermore, by only providing RYA courses, the centre poses little competitive threat to local yacht charter companies, allowing them to collaborate with other businesses for mutual benefit.

sail grenadines yacht charter and rya training centre

And it’s not just about raising the profile of the business; offering RYA training courses in Greece has significantly benefited Steve’s students too. Not only can they learn about stern-to-moorings and local customs, but they can also enjoy sailing in a temperate climate.

Steve and his team also take time to put students in contact with reputable charter companies and ensure they understand how to get the most from the area when going ashore. This combination of courses along with expert local knowledge gives students a good variety of skills and experience that boosts their confidence to explore and enjoy the scenic cruising grounds of Greece, no matter how far away from home they are.

RYA Training Courses Down Under

In 2002, the RYA Yachtmaster™ scheme  was expanded overseas, and RYA training centres were soon established in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Based on the sun-drenched shoreline of Manly in Queensland, Australia, Southern Cross Yachting was set up in 1997. In 2003, it was the first school to gain RYA recognition in Australia. The school’s Principal, Mike Job, tells us that becoming an RYA training centre was an easy decision and the transition was seamless,

“I had been a senior Instructor at an RYA school in the UK before returning to Aus to open Southern Cross Yachting, so we were already following RYA guidelines when we gained our RYA training recognition,” says Mike. “Our location also helps. Moreton Bay, with its busy commercial port, numerous harbours and anchorages, quiet creeks, large tidal range and sandbanks and reefs, is like the Solent with sunshine!”

sail grenadines yacht charter and rya training centre

Mike tells us that becoming an RYA recognised training centre has meant that his students have access to all the training materials and resources that the RYA provides, as well as the excellent instructor training and support. But it is the wide recognition and acceptance of RYA qualifications around the world that is the biggest benefit for those who learn with him.

In 2008, the RYA Yachtmaster™ scheme became the National Yacht training programme of Australia.

“We are incredibly proud to be an RYA training centre,” explains Mike, “the brand is recognised in Australia as the industry standard.”

Furthermore, RYA training courses have allowed Mike’s students to achieve incredible lifelong goals. From competing in the Sydney to Hobart race and circumnavigating the world to skippering a winning entry in the Clipper Round the World Race and crossing oceans single-handed, Mike is very proud of his students’ successes. He also recognises the value that RYA training can bring to people who are just starting out in sailing and want to get out on the water for the first time,

“The multitude of people that have simply come to take up sailing, who we have been able to help fulfil dreams and change their lives with RYA training, is what makes it all worthwhile.”

Training International Crew

After working as a yacht captain on private yachts, Steve Jakeway began a career in powerboat training. He qualified as an RYA Instructor and gained many years of experience teaching before opening The Ocean Academy in Florida in 2019. Steve knew from the very beginning that he wanted his school to be an RYA recognised training centre.

“I have always been impressed at the quality, integrity and leadership of the RYA. When it was time to start my own school, it was an easy decision. There is no better training scheme in the world, in my opinion, and the excellent reputation of the RYA globally has helped my school to thrive,” Steve explains.

sail grenadines yacht charter and rya training centre

And it seems that the training is working; Steve tells us that many of his students have benefited significantly from the high standards of training that the RYA courses deliver and have made substantial progress in their careers as a result.

“I have dozens of examples of yacht crew that have advanced in their positions, many starting with basic level courses and advancing to Chief Mate or Captain,” he explains. “Many others have benefitted from the excellent RYA training to enter the MCA OOW programs and beyond .”

This clearly shows the positive, life-changing impact that RYA training can have on students. Not only can they look forward to a lifelong career in the marine industry, but their RYA qualifications can also help them find work anywhere in the world.

RYA Training in Multiple Languages

In 2004, the RYA granted the first rights for RYA Publications to be licensed in Spanish, German, Japanese and many other languages. Then, in 2018, RYA training courses were delivered in a foreign language for the very first time with the dinghy and windsurfing schemes becoming available in Mandarin at RYA recognised training centres in China.

Since this significant milestone in RYA training history, the RYA has worked closely with the Chinese Yachting Association to help make sailing more accessible and mainstream in China. RYA Director of Training and Qualifications, Richard Falk, commented at the time:

“We are delighted to be working with the CYA to further develop the provision of sailing in China. Through this exciting collaboration, we hope to make RYA recognition more accessible to Chinese training centres and to drive opportunities for instructor training, ultimately promoting and supporting the growth of sailing more generally within China.”

sail grenadines yacht charter and rya training centre

At the time of the launch, the CYA Vice General-Secretary, Danqing Fu, commented on the high standards of RYA training and the benefit of RYA training centres to the sport’s future in China,

“The CYA is dedicated to increasing the accessibility of training in order to promote the sport of sailing, in a safe and more standardised way. RYA training is known as the very highest standard, and we are pleased to be working together to boost the development of the Chinese sailing industry and to popularise sailing among the youth and masses in China.”

In the future, it is hoped that RYA training will be made even more accessible to international students, with people from all over the world able to enrol on an RYA course in their chosen location.

50 Years of RYA Training

The RYA introduced the dinghy and coaching schemes in 1970 to help clubs and sailing schools by providing a national syllabus and method of learning to sail. Fifty years on, the RYA has a network of more than 2,400 training centres in 58 countries and supports the delivery of over 100 courses.

Read about the 50 th anniversary celebrations at www.rya.org.uk/go/50years . Or to join the millions of boaters who have trained with the RYA, visit www.rya.org.uk/training .

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Sailing holidays in the grenadines.

Choose a yacht charter in the Grenadines, sailing from Grenada or St Vincent, to explore this chain of enchanting islands with soft white sand, turquoise seas and spectacular coral reefs.

The lush green islands of the Grenadines rise up out of the emerald Caribbean Sea stretching from the Spice Island of Grenada in the south as far as St Vincent, 50 miles to the north. These beautiful, unspoilt islands each have a unique character and it is worthwhile giving yourself plenty of time to explore the archipelago. A fantastic way to maximise your time spent on your Grenadines yacht charter is to choose a one-way charter from St Vincent to Grenada or vice versa, ensuring you can experience as much of this idyllic Caribbean sailing area as possible.

Visit the islands of Carriacou, Union, Bequia, Mustique, Mayreau and Canouan and anchor in the fabulous Tobago Cays, a breathtakingly beautiful national park. The Tobago Cays are a highlight of sailing holidays in the Grenadines with outstanding snorkelling and diving. Jump into the crystal clear waters to discover the abundant marine life including turtles and stingrays. A night under the stars in the marine park is an unforgettable experience.

The Grenadines are one of the great yacht cruising areas in the world. With a charter base located at each end of the archipelago, both with a range of monohulls and catamarans available to charter, you now have even more options and flexibility for your sailing holiday in the Grenadines.

Suggested Sailing Itineraries

Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary from grenada,  day 1 : carriacou (30nm).

From base at True Blue Bay, make an early start for an exhilarating day sailing to Tyrrel Bay, on the island of Carriacou. Anchor amongst the local fishing boats and dine ashore or BBQ the fish you caught on the passage from Grenada!

 DAY 2 : Petit St. Vincent (10nm)

Take a swim at Sandy Island, a flawless sandy spit with no more than half a dozen palm trees, before visiting Hillsborough to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables at the market, as well as to clear out of Grenadian territory. Sail over to Petit St. Vincent and anchor behind the reef to the north east of the island. Dinghy ashore for an excellent meal at the exclusive hotel on PSV.

 DAY 3 : Mayreau (12nm)

The dramatic peaks of Union Island are a short down-wind sail away. Enter Clifton Harbour and complete check-in formalities for St. Vincent territory. Set sail for palm-lined Saltwhistle Bay on the north west shore of Mayreau. Snorkel the reef on Grand Col Point. Hidden behind the pristine beach and palms of Saltwhistle Bay nestles a fine resort where you can enjoy dinner Flintstone-style on rock tables.

 DAY 4 : Tobago Cays (5nm)

Take an early morning stroll to the top of Mayreau and enjoy the magnificent views of the Tobago Cays and surrounding islands. Navigate the channel to the Tobago Cays under the midday sunlight. The horseshoe reef offers limitless snorkeling and some fine drift dives. Dine aboard under the stars, in the knowledge that you are in one of the most spectacular anchorages on earth.

 DAY 5 : Tyrrel Bay (15nm)

Sail back to cosmopolitan Clifton Harbour to check out of St. Vincent territory, then ease the sheets for a great down-wind sail to Tyrrel Bay on Carriacou.

 DAY 6 : Prickly Bay (35nm)

One last passage to Grenada and overnight at Prickly Bay, a large tranquil bay on the south coast of Grenada. Enjoy exclusive dining at one of the best restaurants on the island. At weekends, dance the night away to the local sounds of the steel pan band at the Boatyard.

DAY 7 : True Blue Bay Marina (5nm)

A short leisurely sail brings you back around to True Blue Bay Marina for a noon finish.

Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary from St Vincent

 day 1 : mustique.

After a comprehensive chart and yacht briefing at the base in Blue Lagoon Marina on the south west coast of St. Vincent, set sail for a brief 2 hour passage to Mustique. Pick up a mooring in Britannia Bay, before heading ashore for cocktails at Basil’s Bar, or catch a taxi up the hill to the Firefly Restaurant for sundowners and a glorious dinner.

 DAY 2 : Tobago Cays

After breakfast set sail for the beautiful Tobago Cays, one of the World’s most breathtaking anchorages. The anchorage is protected by an enormous horseshoe reef which also provides amazing snorkeling. You can swim with the turtles that feed around the five islands that make up the Cays, or explore ashore with the nearly tame iguanas and tortoises. In the evening you can arrange a wonderful lobster or fish beach BBQ with one of the local guides, or light up the BBQ yourself on board and dine under the stars.

DAY 3 : Petit St Vincent

Leaving the Cays by the northern entrance enjoy an exhilarating reach past Mayreau and Union before reaching the sheltered waters of Petit St Vincent. Explore the tiny sand islet of Mopion with a single coconut thatch sun shelter before heading over to the PSV anchorage overnight. Dine exclusively at the resort or arrange a water taxi for excellent local food at Palm Beach Restaurant on Petite Martinique. Top off with water and fuel if required on Petite Martinique in the morning.

DAY 4 : Chatham Bay, Union Island

Sail downwind for an hour to Chatham Bay. This large anchorage has a sweeping beach under high hills. There is excellent snorkeling along the north side of the bay and some great walking ashore. For dinner head for Seckie and Vanessa’s restaurant on the beach, in season this frequently ends up as a dancing party in the sand.

DAY 5 : Salt Whistle Bay

A short sail to Mayreau in the morning, dropping anchor in Salt Whistle Bay, a palm fringed semi-circle of white sand. There’s some good walking here, but most worthwhile is the short hike to the top of the hill and the breathtaking view from the Catholic Church. For dinner try Dennis’s Hideaway in the village, a short climb up the hill from Saline Bay.

 DAY 6 : Bequia

Set out for a four hour romping sail to Bequia, arriving in time for lunch before setting off to explore the island. This island is one of the most laid back and attractive islands of the whole Caribbean – absolutely perfect for your last night. Restaurants and bars abound, choose between local fare and fine dining according to your taste and budget. Shore side activities include a guided tour of the island including a visit to the Turtle Sanctuary. For the more active there are numerous hiking trails around Bequia with superb views from the hill tops.

DAY 7 : Blue Lagoon Marina

A short but exciting sail brings you back to Blue Lagoon Marina in time for a noon finish.

The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

As its popularity and success rate has grown over the last years Moscow Boat Show 2012 has developed to incorporate more than just an exhibition. These special events serve to attract leading exhibitors and visitors and allow all participants the chance to broaden their knowledge and of course their sales potential.

Moscow Boat Show helps representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improves national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 4 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar. The organizers of the exhibition aim to bring together on the same platform all key national and worldwide players and to offer an excellent platform to encourage networking among specialists and visitors in order to accelerate the development in this field as well as implementing new technologies, the newest equipment, materials and components.
