Traxxas DCB M41 40-Inch Brushless Catamaran Ready-to-Race Boat w/TSM

Traxxas DCB M41 40-Inch Brushless Catamaran Ready-to-Race Boat

This is the Traxxas DCB M41 40-Inch Ready-to-Race Catamaran Boat with Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) and TQi 2.4GHz Radio System (Traxxas Bluetooth Link Module Compatible - Module sold separately). This boat comes fully assembled, Ready-To-Race, with the Velineon 540XL Brushless Motor, VXL-6s Marine ESC, and factory-applied graphics. The batteries and charger are sold separately for this boat. Extreme Power and Speed The DCB M41 Widebody catamaran, designed by DCB (Dave's Custom Boats) founder Dave Hemmingson, is the largest model offered in the DCB M-Series. With its precision sculpted design and a pair of Mercury Racing 1350 engines, it speeds across the water at 175mph! Traxxas has faithfully captured the incredible looks and performance of the DCB M41 in a detailed scale replica that is versatile, fun, and fast. The catamaran hull has been accurately reproduced to deliver the speed, stability and confidence that the full-size M41 is famous for, allowing you to have fun wherever your marine adventures take you. The M41 replica is equally at home blasting across the waves at the lake on a fun run or exploiting its 50+mph speed on a favorite stretch of smooth water. The razor sharp handling lets you carve turns with authority and precision and yet, offers easy control while cruising by the shore. Traxxas Stability Management Micro Receiver with Fail-Safe Security Traxxas Stability Management (TSM) makes it possible to experience all the extreme power, speed, and acceleration that was engineered into Traxxas models by making it much easier to control the vehicle on any water condition. Punch it off the line and TSM goes to work sensing the boat's direction and making steering corrections to provide straight-ahead full-throttle acceleration without fishtailing, spinouts, and loss of control. TSM also works during cornering, first making intuitive corrections to maintain the vehicle's line, then hammer the throttle earlier in the turn for much faster exit speeds. Traxxas TSM gives all the benefits modern electronic stabilization has to offer without intruding on driving fun or introducing unexpected side effects that can be found on other systems such as drastically reduced turning radius, assistance that times out (quits), throttle restrictions, and an overall disconnected driving feel. Traxxas engineers developed superior tuning algorithms that run on high-speed, precision electronic components to create a system that works invisibly, in the background, without ever limiting throttle. TSM can be fine tuned (or turned off) for different surfaces by simply adjusting the multi-function knob on the TQi transmitter, or by adjusting the slider in the Traxxas Link app. The result is driving faster, with more ease, and having more fun. In fact, the driver may not even realize how much TSM is helping until it is turned off and their driving skills are tested without it! Everything is waterproof and Traxxas-tough as you'd expect. This is performance on a whole new level!

40" Widebody Catamaran Hull Based on the full-size M41 Widebody designed and built by Dave's Custom Boats, the Traxxas M41 gets its unique, aggressive appearance thanks to its use of a catamaran hull design. Instead of using a monohull with a V-shape design, the catamaran uses two parallel hulls of equal size. This hull design offers more than a different visual presentation; the catamaran offers a wider stance on the water for increased stability and less hydrodynamic resistance. This also lets the M41 use less energy to propel itself across the water making it incredibly fast. The M41 gets on plane almost immediately, letting you get to the fun faster - to the tune of 50+ mph on 6S LiPo power. Big Boat, Big Fun The M41 is a water-roosting speed demon that's also a work of art. At just over 40 inches (1 meter) long, the M41 has a commanding presence just floating in the water. Crack open the throttle and the fun begins! The M41's size and design give it the versatility to work well in a wide range of conditions. The M41 is stable and easy to control whether blasting across the waves in a big lake, cruising past the shoreline, or testing it's 50mph top speed on a smooth pond. Rigid Internal Structure A unique feature of the M41 is its rigid internal structure with removeable electronics tray and motor mount. The VXL-6s electronic speed control, waterproof receiver box, and powerful 2056 high-torque steering servo are all bolted securely to the tray. The motor is attached independently to a motor mount that increases the rigidity of the hull. In just a few quick minutes, the electronics can be removed for maintenance. The internal structure includes an integrated reinforced transom to provide a solid mounting surface for the control and drive systems. In all the M41 delivers the ruggedness and reliability needed for all-day fun, run after run. DCB M41 Detailed Cockpit Traxxas faithfully reproduced the M41's artfully sculpted cockpit with an acute attention to detail, from the gauges and speakers to the steering wheel and seats. The detailed cockpit flows with the rest of the boat to become a complete work of high-performance art. Flex Cable Drive System The M41 features an efficient and reliable flex cable drive system that is securely mounted to the internal structure. This unique installation provides easy access to the various driveline components for quick maintenance or upgrades. Quick Release Flex Cable Some boats rely on set screws to pinch the flex shaft in place. Set screws are prone to loosening and can damage the flex shaft - that's not the Traxxas way. The M41 features a clamping collet that holds the flex cable tightly and centers it perfectly with the motor's output shaft for the smoothest operation possible. This design eliminates the usual set screws that can strip, come apart, or damage the flex cable. When it's time for maintenance, the collet releases quickly with a twist of the included precision wrench. Once loosened, the prop and flex cable simply slide out. Reinstallation is just as fast, making it easy to keep your M41 in peak running condition. High-Performance Prop The M41 is equipped with a surface-piercing prop that has been optimized to get the hull on plane as quickly as possible without cavitation. The prop is made of a molded composite construction that is lightweight and tough, with no balancing or sharpening needed. High-Strength Aluminum Hardware For efficient power transfer and razor-sharp handling, the M41 is equipped with rigid drive hardware and a flex-free transom. These components allow you to experience every ounce of extreme brushless horsepower and performance. The rudder, rudder support, and drive strut are extruded and machined from rugged 6000-series aluminum alloy for maximum strength. The pieces are polished and anodized a vivid blue. The rudder also incorporates a pickup that feeds water through the cooling system. Stainless-Steel Trim Tabs The M41's dual trim tabs further tune its high-speed performance. The trim tabs are precision die-cut and made of bent form stainless steel to resist corrosion. They help keep the M41 stable during high speed runs. Factory-Applied Graphics When it comes to first impressions, the M41 makes a big visual statement with its bold graphics. No painting or decaling is required; the graphics are pre-painted so you can get from the box to the water quickly. Easy-Access Hatch The M41's hatch is secured by a single body clip and removes in seconds for fast and easy access to the hull interior. No sealing tape is required, and a specially designed drip rail in the hull channels away any water that washes over the hatch. Body-Clip Lanyard A flexible rubber lanyard keeps the body clip secured to the hatch so it's always at the ready. It's just one of the many small details that makes a day at the pond with M41 fun and easy. Virtually Unsinkable The foundation of the M41's extreme performance is its all new hull. An accurately rendered replica, the precision engineered DCB M41 hull is fast and stable. Built in foam flotation makes it virtually unsinkable. Stainlees Steel Hex Hardware M41 uses corrosion-resistant stainless-steel and nickel-plated hardware throughout for good looks, easy maintenance, and lasting performance. Waterproof Electronics Waterproof electronics are a must in the marine environment. Traxxas electronics are fully waterproof (not just water resistant). The speed control, servo, and receiver all feature rugged waterproofing protection for dependable operation you can count on. It's an innovation you'll find only in Traxxas vehicles. High-Torque Waterproof Servo M41 demands a powerful steering servo for responsive performance, and Traxxas delivers with the 2056 high-torque servo. O-ring seals make the servo completely waterproof, and there's steering muscle to spare with 80 oz-in of torque at your command. That's twice the power of typical "standard" servos. Sealed Watertight Receiver Box Traxxas' innovative, ground-breaking waterproof receiver box routes the antenna and servo wires neatly through a special watertight seal (patent pending). To protect the receiver, a custom shaped blue O-ring seals the receiver box. Thanks to the unique design, the receiver can be removed for service and even aftermarket receivers can be used, without losing the sealing properties of the box. Velineon VXL-6s Marine Brushless System Extreme Velineon brushless horsepower delivers the muscle you want with the reliability you expect from Traxxas. The VXL-6s Marine electronic speed control is built for true 6S LiPo power.* On-board low voltage detection helps you maintain your batteries. The extra voltage and current maximizes the potential of the Velineon 540XL motor for extreme 50+mph speed. The rebuildable, sensorless Velineon 540XL motor is designed for high-rpm performance and reliability with ultra high-temperature sintered Neodymium magnets, a precision-balanced rotor, and efficient, high-speed ball bearings. Cooling water is routed through the innovative speed control case and then into a unique sealed motor jacket that allows cooling water to flow directly against the motor for maximum possible heat transfer. The M41 keeps its cool, run after run, for trouble-free all-day fun. The World's Most Advanced Ready-To-Race Radio System Traxxas models deserve the world's most advanced Ready-To-Race radio system. The radio system after all is the sole connection between the driver and machine. It has to be precise, comfortable, powerful, and reliable. The all-new Traxxas TQi radio system arrives with a full compliment of tuning features; long-range, high-output, 2.4GHz signal, and proven Traxxas reliability for rock-solid performance. It's so advanced; it doesn't even need an external antenna. However, the most important new feature may already be in your pocket. The TQi can be equipped with an optional Traxxas Link Wireless Module (#6511, sold separately) that turns your Android device, iPad iPhone or iPod touch into a powerful tuning tool for your Traxxas model. The full-color display combines with the Traxxas Link App to deliver an intuitive, high-definition, full-color graphical user interface that unlocks the mysteries of optimizing your radio system for ultimate vehicle control. 7 Super-Fast RC Catamaran Boats

7 Super-Fast RC Catamaran Boats

Joseph Flynt

Catamarans—cats for short—are the type of boat you either love or have little interest in. This guide is for the former. An RC catamaran is a multihulled vessel with dual parallel hulls. With sailing cats, there are at least two beams that connect the hulls, with a mast on one of them. The absence of a keel lets the boats sail or race in shallow waters. That means they get to go where other models can’t.

The Catamaran’s unique design is not only for riding the shallows. It also makes the boats a lot wider, more stable, and faster than conventional monohull crafts.

  • Radio Controlled Catamarans

R/C catamarans are miniature versions of real boats. Most models are ultra-fast speedboats that achieve plane quicker than other vessel types. Hobbyists love to race them because of their pace on the water and aggressive turning ability. The downside to cats is that they’re not at home on choppier waters, and are more vulnerable to turnovers. Consider an RC cat for smooth water, sporty fun.

  • RC Catamaran Buying Considerations

The price between models can vary a lot, so set a maximum budget before you do anything. Knowing your budget narrows down the search to only those within your price range.

Here’s a quick breakdown of buying considerations for those new to RC.

  • Gas vs. electric
  • Motor choices
  • Running time
  • Charging time
  • Useful features
  • Gas Vs. Electric Power

Opt for an electric cat if you’re new to the world of RC boats. They’re cleaner, easier to maintain and still have plenty of oomph on the water. Gas-powered cats are for experienced hobbyists. They’re for people who love the realistic experience provided by liquid fuels. But they’re also dirtier, need periodic oil changes, engine tune-ups, and regular maintenance.

  • Speed Considerations

Speed is half the fun, but the faster the boat, the more space and skills one needs to control it. Some models have variable speeds, whereas others are plain fast from the off. Think about where you intend to use the boat. High speed is not your friend with small bodies of water such as pools and tiny ponds. Novice users should opt for a slower cat or one with variable speeds and precise throttle manipulation.

  • Motor Choices

Electric-powered catamarans use brushed or brushless motors. The brushed options are the cheapest of the two. They are also slower and have a shorter life expectancy than their brushless counterparts. Brushless is the best option because they pack more power, are quieter, and require no maintenance. Most agree that the higher cost of a brushless power system is justifiable.

  • Running & Charging Times

The time an RC cat runs on a single charge depends on how hard you push it and the battery used. Running times vary between models and can range from single digits to 30+ minutes. There are two other things to consider here. One is the charging time and the other is the cost of extra batteries. I include the battery and charging times in each of the reviews.

  • Control Range

The control range is how far the boat can travel from its transmitter. Make sure the distance is acceptable for your needs. Likewise, it’s not necessary to have a range that goes further than the line of sight (LOS). If that happens, and you lose power or the signal, you may not be able to recover the boat. Some models come with low-battery and low-signal warning indicators.

The range also depends on the radio system used and other factors. The control distance is acceptable with all the models featured in this review guide.

  • Useful Features

Make a list of what features are important to you. Consider the boat’s materials, especially its hull. Others might be a breakaway rudder system, low battery protection, and a self-righting function. Make a note of the dimensions too. Beginners often buy a model that’s either smaller or bigger than they thought. Also, heed the manufacturer’s recommended age if you’re buy the boat as a surprise gift.

  • About My ‘RC Catamaran’ Guide

The purpose of this simple guide is to put all the jumbled seller’s spiel into plain English. These short reviews highlight the boats good and not so good features—if any. There’s also a tech specs column that gives details of the specifics mentioned above.

The 7 RC catamarans below are the result of personal research. I also took the views of industry experts into consideration, along with user feedback. The first three are the Editor’s choice for Best Budget, Best Value, and the Top Pick. The cats below those are in price order for convenience.

  • 1. Pro Boat 17” Miss Geico RC Cat | Best Budget

Pro Boat 17” Miss Geico RC Cat

Editor’s Rating: 4.2/5

Pro Boat‘s 7” Miss Geico is a fun RC catamaran. It’s a fully ready to run (RTR) model that comes complete with a battery and wall charger. It’s a fun boat and an excellent first-time cat.

  • Best feature 1: Durable blow-molded ABS hull
  • Best feature 2: Dynamite 380-size motor
  • Plus points: RTR model, excellent first-time cat, streamlined design, breakaway rudder,
  • Minus points: Slow for a cat, short run time
  • Miss Geico RC Catamaran Highlights

The Miss Geico RC cat has a durable, rigid, impact-resistant ABS hull. A powerful 380 motor system provides the boat with plenty of torque for a model in its class. Consider this vessel as a first catamaran, especially if it’s a gift for younger children. It makes an excellent trainer craft with its precise throttle manipulation and easy-to-use controls.

The streamlined design and bright yellow color offer more than just an eye-catching appeal. It also gives the Miss Geico high visibility on the water. Another feature worth a mention is the breakaway rudder system. That helps to protect the drivetrain should the boat hit ground.

  • The Not So Good

At 12–15 mph, the 17” Miss Geico is not a super-fast catamaran, but then it doesn’t claim to be. The run time with the supplied battery only lasts about 10–15 minutes at best. That’s quite typical for this category, but disappointing nonetheless.

  • 2. Aquacraft Wildcat EP Catamaran | Best Value

Aquacraft Wildcat EP Catamaran

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

The Best Value pick goes to Aquacraft’s Wildcat EP brushless catamaran. This boat is a step up from the beginner-friendly model above. Let’s check out some of its best features.

  • Best feature 1: Molded ABS hull w/ transom drain plug
  • Best feature 2: Powerful 35-36-1800Kv brushless outrunner motor
  • Plus points: Tactic Tx, striking graphics, breakaway rudder, failsafe features, boat stand
  • Minus points: Too fast for beginners, no battery included
  • Wildcat EP Catamaran Highlights

The Aquacraft Wildcat EP catamaran is everything you’d expect from a model in its category. The boat has striking graphics and a beautiful streamlined molded ABS hull complete with a transom drain plug. A powerful brushless 35-36-1800Kv outrunner motor propels this cat to speeds exceeding 40 mph (64 km/h). Control is easy and interference-free thanks to the TTX300 SLT Tactic radio system.

  • Safe & Secure

There are plenty of safety and protection features with the Wildcat EP Catamaran, namely:

  • Water-cooled brushless controller w/ low-voltage cutoff
  • Break-away rudder system
  • Steering & throttle reverse/trims
  • Two-blade fiber-reinforced plastic propeller

Adrenaline fans won’t be disappointed with the speed and handling of this cat. It’s super stable on the water even when it’s choppy. It may fall slightly short for expert users, but it’s an excellent second boat for those at the intermediate level. There’s also a stand for safe storing out of the water.

The Wildcat EP catamaran may temp beginners though it’s too fast for novice users. It has superb handling, but driving at high speeds still takes skill. The model doesn’t include a battery, so you need to add at least 15 dollars to the price or more if you want spares.

  • 3. RTR Gas-Powered Zelos G Catamaran | Top Pick

RTR Gas-Powered Zelos G Catamaran

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

Pro Boat gets the Top Pick with it’s incredible gas-powered Zelos 48” catamaran. We’re in the big league now. It’s the kind of model that beginners and intermediate enthusiasts aspire to.

  • Best feature 1: Wide, triple layered fiberglass hull
  • Best feature 2: Sturdy canopy w/ thumb screw fasteners
  • Plus points: Powerful 30cc engine, water cooling, metal prop, centrifugal clutch, boat stand
  • Minus points: Needs experience and maintenance skills
  • Zelos G Catamaran Highlights

The Zelos™ 48 Type G Catamaran is a gorgeous boat. It has a classic sporty look with a striking trim finish. That makes it an attractive display model when it’s out of the water (stand included). And it’s well-protected against brutal crashes thanks to the extra layers of reinforced fiberglass.

  • The Zelos G Power System

This powerful high-speed boat springs to life when it’s on the water. Expect speeds of 50+ mph (80+ km/h) from its gas-powered 30cc Dynamite® Zenoah G300PUM engine. It starts effortlessly too with the EZ Starting System, so no pulling needed. The boat has a 3-blade metal prop that’s durable and long-lasting. It’s also possible to sharpen and balance the prop to improve performance further.

The metal propeller won’t spin when the engine is idle thanks to the centrifugal clutch. This safety feature protects hands and fingers when moving the boat in and out of the water. Surprisingly, not all big boats include a centrifugal clutch. Also, the propeller strut has anodizing to protect it in harsh conditions, and that includes salt water.

Another feature to mention is the water-cooling system. It uses water pickups on the bottom of the hull and the boat’s rudder. They work by feeding water to the cat’s engine and its tuned exhaust. Keeping operating temperatures down is vital for safe and optimal operation.

  • Spektrum™ DX2E Transmitter

The Zelos G Catamaran comes with a Spektrum™ DX2E transmitter. It’s a quality controller with adjustable endpoints and an extended range. It also includes a built-in lost signal fail-safe feature for added protection. The radio system uses a waterproof Spektrum MR4000 receiver.

This boat is not for the faint-hearted, and it’s not suitable for novice users. The engine must be broken in first. Although that’s not difficult, problems do arise out of impatience and ignorance. Engines—unlike electric power—need maintenance and tweaking to perfection. There are safety issues to consider as well. These things are only negatives for the inexperienced RC boater.

Pro Boat RTR Blackjack 24” Brushless RC Cat

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

This RC fast cat is the ready to run (RTR) RC Blackjack 24” brushless catamaran. It’s a fun boat for use on ponds and lakes that leaves plenty of waves in its wake.

  • Best feature 1: Ready to run (RTR) catamaran
  • Best feature 2: Powerful 2000Kv brushless water-cooled motor
  • Plus points: Off-set rudder system, 1-piece electronics tray, waterproof electronics, drain plug
  • Minus points: Potentially loose parts, short running time
  • Pro Boat 24” Blackjack Highlights

Pro Boat’s lightweight RTR 24” Blackjack is ready to go right out of its box. Its blood red paint job and streamline design give it an eye-catching appearance. It can pack a punch on the water too, capable of top speeds around 30 mph (48 km/h). The power comes from a water-cooled 2000Kv brushless motor and 30A LiPo compatible ESC. Blackjack’s 2.4GHz radio system is a Spektrum™ STX FHSS.

An off-set high-strength rudder system provides the boat with outstanding stability on the water. The Blackjack has waterproof electronics and a convenient one-piece electronics tray. Other feature highlights include a handy drain plug and a waterproof hull-mounted steering servo.

This catamaran is ready to run (RTR), but there are some reports of loose parts. New users should always check for any looseness with this and any RC boat before running it. The other, more predictable con, is the short running time. How long you get depends on the battery (not included). Even so, the boat’s unlikely to go for much more than 10 minutes on a single charge.

  • 5. Rage RTR RC B1207 Super Catamaran Boat

Rage RTR RC B1207 Super Catamaran Boat

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

This model is the Rage RC B1207 Super Catamaran. It’s a 100% factory assembled ready to run (RTR) RC SuperCat. The model comes equipped with a 2CH, 2.4GHz radio system.

  • Best feature 1: Durable unibody ABS hull
  • Best feature 2: Fully proportional throttle and steering control
  • Plus points: Stainless steel parts, brushless power system, wooden display stand
  • Minus points: Few reviews
  • Rage B1207 Catamaran Highlights

The Rage RC B1207 SuperCat has a sleek design with an aggressive trim. It boasts a durable unibody ABS hull, stainless-steel propeller, and rudder. Users get plenty of adrenaline-pumping wave-making fun on the water too. Top speeds can reach up to 40 mph (64 km/h) in the right conditions.

High performance and smooth handling add further to the SuperCat’s appeal. We have the 2000kV water-cooled brushless motor and 40A water-cooled ESC to thank for that. And the boat’s fully proportional throttle and steering control keep you firmly in the driving seat. Some call it the water rocket, and it’s a deserved nickname too. Check out some of the video demonstrations.

This model doesn’t have much real user feedback at the time of writing. Many less experienced buyers rely on owner reviews as part of the decision-making process. Veteran RC boaters are in a better position to make informed choices based on personal experience.

  • 6. Pro Boat UL-19 Brushless Fast Hydroplane Cat

Pro Boat UL-19 Brushless Fast Hydroplane Cat

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

Another Pro Boat model gets the sixth slot. This time it’s the UL-19, a 30 inch brushless hydroplane. OK, so it’s not a true cat, but its super-fast performance and airfoil hull are sure to interest some.

  • Best feature 1: Lightweight, durable design with vertical fins
  • Best feature 2: Brushless power system
  • Plus points: Hand-laid fiberglass, breakaway rudder, Spektrum™ 3KG servo, metal parts
  • Minus points: Gets hot fast, short run time
  • Pro Boat UL-19 Cat Highlights

You often read comments like adrenaline-pumping and heart-pounding, but in this case, it’s true. Pro Boat’s UL-19 is an incredible vessel that runs as fast as its sleek design suggests. This puppy can reach speeds up to 50+ mph on 6S power due to its 6 pole water-cooled motor and the 120A ESC. Drivers get to experience fast, confident cornering thanks to the waterproof Spektrum™ 3KG servo.

The UL-19 hydroplane is a lightweight yet stable boat on the water. The boat’s canopy and hull use hand-laid fiberglass in the build for added strength. It has removable/replaceable vertical fins and a breakaway rudder. The model also uses metal for its vital components. They include the aluminum rudder, stainless steel 2-blade prop, aluminum propeller strut, and a stainless-steel turn fin.

The electronics tend to get overly hot even at slower speeds. You’d expect that with flat-out racing for long durations, but not at half throttle. Yes, the Pro Boat UL-19 can run on a 6S battery setup, but it won’t serve you well in the longer term. Ideally, the 2-3S 5000mAh 50C LiPo is certain to increase component life. Running time depends on the setup, but it’s going to be in single digits in all cases.

  • 7. Traxxas Red DCB M41 Brushless Catamaran

Traxxas Red DCB M41 Brushless Catamaran

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Meet the Traxxas Red DCB M41. It’s a powerful brushless catamaran capable of reaching speeds up to 50 mph (80 km/h) on 6S power. The designer of this beauty is DCB or Dave’s Custom Boats.

  • Best feature 1: Wide physique catamaran
  • Best feature 2: Precision sculpted 1350 Mercury racing engines
  • Plus points: Ultra-fast, versatile, low voltage safety, adjustable battery trays, electronics tray
  • Minus points: Needs upgrades for optimal performance, high price tag
  • Traxxas Red DCB M41 Cat Highlights

The Traxxas Red DCB M41 twin hull catamaran is a beast outdoors that’s fast and versatile. It’s a stable performer too whether it’s racing across waves or smoother water. The included advanced TQi receiver, and 2.4GHz transmitter allows captains to fine-tune their boat. The incredible power comes from a pair of precision sculpted 1350 Mercury racing engines.

Let’s look at some of the other feature highlights. The adjustable battery trays with hook-and-loop straps are useful. You can adapt them to use with various Traxxas LiPo or NiMH batteries. The cat is compatible for use with 6S LiPos with integral low-voltage detection. There’s a removable electronics tray and a waterproof receiver box that are easy to access for maintenance.

It’s a beautiful boat and a great performer, but it does need upgrades for optimal performance. The stock cooling is one, and the stock plastic props don’t hold out too well either. Some users complain about the thin plastic hull as well. Despite that, I haven’t come across any reports of the hull breaking up. The cost of a Traxxas Red DCB M41 is quite high, but most fans think it offers excellent value.

FAQs About RC Sailboats

If you do not see your question, or an answer to it, listed below, get in touch with us and we’ll happily give you one!

How do RC Sailboats work?

RC Sailboats work through radio control, which is a given considering the “RC” in the name, and a bit of skill. You need to steer, draw the sail, etc. Interestingly enough, it’s a lot like sailing a real sailboat, but you’re using a controller to do it.

This is where the skill part comes in. Drawing the sails, for example, requires timing and precision to ensure that you’re doing it properly. If you don’t, you face it sinking, should the model be a very extensive one, or not sailing properly at all.

the-best-rc-sailboat

Where can I race a RC Sailboat?

You can race a RC Sailboat virtually anywhere. Although, racing in the ocean may not be the best idea if you’re very invested, both emotionally and financially, in your boat.

This is where lines come in. A lot of users will have a line system to ensure that if there is a crash and their boat sinks, or whatever the case may be, they can still retrieve their vessel without actually having to go into the water.

Are there are RC Sailboats that use wind?

Yes! Some RC Sailboats do not use electricity or a motor as a source to run. Some only work with windy weather, but still require a controller for steering, drawing the sails, etc.

What happens when the wind stops?

This is another instance where a tow line comes in handy. If the wind stops you have two options – wait for it to come back, or use your tow line to reel it back in. Some users have small tugboats that are able to go out and retrieve a RC Sailboat that has a downed sail, has stalled, etc.

What if it tips?

If your RC Sailboats tips, it’s obviously not a very good one. The good quality ones have something at the bottom to ensure this doesn’t happen unless it’s hit by another one, has a hole in the side, etc.

It may tip into the water from the wind or have the bow go under water, but it should not tip on its side completely in any instance other than one of the reasons previously mentioned.

If it does tip, reel it in using your tow line or go into the water and get it.

I would definitely go for K2 – manufactured by Sailboat RC company. That 1-metre hull beast won World AND European Championship, USA Nationals, Southern America Cup, Australian Nats…and all in 2017/2018 season!!

Check it out, it is outstanding piece of art really, a must have RC Sailboat.

I am looking for 1 mtr fibreglass remote controlled sailing boat preferably European or american. Thanks Annette

' src=

Hej! Have you found something? I search for a rc sailboat that I can transport with my bicicle.

' src=

Hi Annette, I too am looking for a 1 meter or 3 foot sailboat. Had a “Tradewinds” that was 3 feet long and loved it! BUT, the 5 pound center board weight (I used BB’s) was hard to find…. Want to get one so it can be sailed in the pond/small lake outside. A friend got one too and we used to “race”. But, we had no buoys – there are usually two or three and depends on the size of the boat.

In the Chicago area, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana (Munster), Michigan, and Florida (about 20 miles from Orlando) – we were lucky and I was sailing anywhere from 13′ to 45′ boats. People that did not know me were freaked out when I could sail.

Another boat makes sense here. And, if I had two, then another person can sail too. And, I can make buoys that are needed to race boats. Hmm, that is a good idea.

I am a former professional licensed Captain, sailboat dealer and racer who is now landlocked. Looking to start RC sailing, but prefer to identify key class associations, publications and such information to make sure there is a strong RC class or one design to guide me. Looking forward to guidance first, then back on the water the right way.

My 18-year-old sails 420s and Lasers competitively, and is now asking for a r/c sailboat for Christmas. He has never used one before, but thinks the idea sounds fun. He is engineer-minded, grew up rigging and racing. We live on a bay off the ocean. Can anyone recommend a r/c sailboat $300 or less?

Volans is another tri but it gets poorer reviews than the Skate. Also the Joysway cats-very small extremely prone to capsize. Anybody considering a "commercial" multihull should get the largest version they can afford-tremendous improvement in handling as size goes up. Barracuda See post 1 for a $200+ version of the Skate and go to this link for a $900 "Barracuda" version of the same boat albeit with a lot of improvements: Some components are carbon(not the hulls or crossarms) and it has a new rig a bit further back then the standard Chinese inexpensive version. In my humble opinion, not enough improvement to warrant the massive price difference. http://www.stockmaritime.com/news_presse/print_news.php?action=start&id_news=4600&art=3

Fancy that - I purchased a Skate model trimaran on-line from the US about a month ago. I have no intention to take up model boating as a longer term hobby, at least I dont think I have. I got it because I have some ideas for hydrofoils that may be a bit different to what people have done before and I thought that testing on a radio controlled model might be a way to get started. I dont really expect a model to give all that good an indication of how a full size craft would behave but it hardly seems sensible to start by buying a £200k F-boat or similar then start cutting it up to fit experimental hydrofoil systems. I am also thinking about testing parts of the hydrofoil system by attaching them to a frame work extending from a powered vessel. For this kind of test I think the hydrofoils might be intermediate between full size and those to suit the Skate model. I havent even had my Skate afloat yet. One thing I note is that the hatches that provide access to the radio control system hardly look watertight, I would imagine that I am going to need to seal them up with silicone or something. If I do that I wont be able to even switch the internal electrics on or off since the provided switch is inside the hull. I have purchased a waterproof toggle switch to mount outside the hull but have not fitted it yet. The hulls of the Skate look quite well made. The mast is a nice aerofoil aluminium section, just like a real yacht in miniature, but it is not a rotating mast. The standing rigging looks dubious, at least to me. The arrangement of shrouds is not one that I imagine would work well at full scale and the thread used for the shrouds is pretty stetchy , dont know how much that matters for a model. The boom vang does not look much good, I think that may need to be improved otherwise the gooseneck is going to get damaged. Mind you, these are comments from someone who has never tried model yachting. For mounting experimental hydrofoils I am thinking of first mounting very light aluminium extrusions to various parts of the structure of the Skate, then mounting the foils to those. That will allow adjustments to be made without drilling too many holes in the original structure. Overall the Skate is clearly more of a 'toy' than a 'serious' model yacht, but I think there is at least a chance that I will learn something from it. But then again, all yachts are toys, no?
John, models(preferably larger than the Skate) can work well for testing hydrofoils. In fact, the planform area can be the same on the model as on full size: if the model(to scale area) is 2 sq.ft. then its likely the full size area will be 2 sq.ft. The sections will be different. This was discovered by Dr. Sam Bradfield when using one of my trimaran platforms to test the foil system for his 40' SKAT. Are you going to use surface piercing or fully submerged, altitude controlled foils? Good Luck! John, this is one of two threads about the Skate on the RC Groups forum: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2293611&highlight=Skate Trimaran
Yes, I would prefer to do model testing with a larger model than the Skate, but I havent heard of larger models being available ready made and I can imagine that building one would be a building project very comparable to building a smaller size manned vessel. I am already in the process of building a rowing boat, I have sent posts about this to the 'design a fast rowboat' thread on this forum. I just thought that if I have two building projects at the same time nothing is ever going to get finished, also my workshop space is limited at the present time, I need to have a clear out! The Skate comes almost ready to sail at a price that is negligible compared to costs full size boat owners tend to incur, so I ordered one from the US and the package arrived only a few days later. It was an impulse buy but if it gets me started on a potentially interesting project I think its worth it. Incidentally, if you are in Europe you need to remember that VAT will be added to the advertised cost of the Skate. I say 'almost ready to sail' - there is some minor assembly work to do and the crude flimsy stand supplied to support the thing on land is useless so the first thing I did after opening the package was to make a substantial stand. I think this will be useful when rigging the model alongside a pond and when working on the model to fit experimental features. Since the hatches on the Skate dont look very waterproof I guess I better be careful until I have an idea how much water is likely to sweep the decks. How waterproof do hatches need to be on a model yacht I wonder? I rather thought someone would ask me exactly what kind of hydrofoil arrangement I have in mind! Well, I dont want to say too much at this stage. That is not because I have even the slightest intention to get into any kind of commercial boat design/building activity but simply because I really don't know if any of this will work at all and I don't want egg on my face. I think I can say that there is nothing all that clever or complicated about the basic idea I have in mind, but its not something I have heard of being done before which does not mean that it has not been done before. Also the initial idea spawned a host of variations on the theme, so altogether it becomes a bit of a nebulous cloud of possibilities and difficult to actually describe at this stage. You may well find that I quietly drop the whole thing and build or buy a relatively conventional yacht!
The first thing I thought of yesterday was to ask you about the foil system. I decided not to because I figured you'd say something when you were ready. Don't worry about "eggs"- describing the foil system would be a public service-after all I described my foil system on the Fire Arrow way before I sailed the test model. Hope you have fun with the Skate project! Make sure to put your receiver in a small bag and seal it and seal the hatches as best you can. If the boat didn't come with a sail winch or rudder servo, you can order waterproof servos from "Servo City" in the states . The brand is "Hi Tec" and they're probably available in the UK. Good Luck! PS- please describe your foil system!
