Excess 11 Details

The Excess 11 is the smallest in the Excess fleet, and it is new from the ground up. (The Excess 12 and 15 use existing molds from other models.) With all new tooling, the 38-footer does everything right, providing a great sailing experience along with excellent accommodations for a cruising couple or family. And it is no slow boat. In the 2021 ARC across the Atlantic from Las Palmas to St Lucia in the Caribbean, an Excess 11, while the smallest catamaran in the fleet, took first place in the Multihull Class B Division, beating larger boats.

Just over 37 feet long, with a beam of 21’7”, the cat represents a modern design approach that combines sailing performance with cruising comfort. The draft of 3’9” allows the boat to explore shallow waters better than most other cruising sailboats, particularly monohulls. With a mast clearance of under 57 feet, the boat is also able to travel the ICW. (Despite the fact that the boat is rated CE Class A for offshore passages, it is often prudent for sailors heading south in the fall to remain in the ICW as fall offshore weather windows can be tricky with frequent storms and high seas.)

The boat comes in a three-cabin layout with two heads, and a four-cabin layout, also with two heads. The three-cabin layout is ideal for couples or families, as the entire starboard hull is dedicated as the master stateroom. The head in the forward part of the hull includes a separate shower that will be much appreciated, especially with the head’s large opening hatch.

The port hull has two staterooms with a second head between them, also with a separate shower. For occasional guests, added crew for passages, or children, this configuration should work well, providing as much privacy as possible, something not always possible on a boat.

The saloon on the bridgedeck includes a chart table/nav station and an L-shaped settee. There is also a full galley with laminated wood countertop, two stainless steel sinks, two-burner propane stove with oven, and a stainless-steel refrigerator. The open feel of the saloon is particularly comfortable with the sliding door open into the cockpit. It blends the two areas into one space for a spacious living area. The overhead over the cockpit has a sliding, soft top that be opened out of the way when it is nice weather, but deployed when the sun is too much or the clouds promise a shower.

The interior of the Excess 11 has an Ash Honey Teak finish and with the sand-colored flooring is light and contemporary, which will appeal to younger buyers who have no taste for dark interior treatments.

Tankage on the Excess 11 includes 79 gallons of water, and 21 gallons for each holding tank for the two marine toilets. Total fuel capacity is 106 gallons, with rotomolded tanks in each hull holding 53 gallons to supply fuel to the two Yanmar 3YM30 29hp diesel saildrives.

The exterior of the catamaran reflects a performance orientation in all respects. The use of low-stretch, high strength Dyneema in running rigging is state-of-the-art, and the aft dual helms are also part of the Excess magic, as they provide an in-your-face sailing exposure with outstanding visibility in all directions. The builder did not tint the saloon windows to ensure the person at the helm can easily see through to the other side of the boat. And the steering systems use textile lines to provide a better feel between the rudders and wheel at the helm, which isn’t possible with traditional hydraulic steering systems. That will make sailing this cat a lot more fun, finding that groove where the sail plan is balanced, and the boat sails itself with just a finger on the wheel.

Unlike the bridgedeck helms one finds on most catamarans, which offer restricted visibility and where crew are physically disconnected from the water, the Excess brings the fun back to sailing. Despite the exposed location of the twin helms, realistically, in bad weather—or when making long offshore passages—the crew on watch will engage the boat’s autopilot.

There are numerous upgrades from the standard boat. One can order electric winches, and there are several rigging and sail options. These include the Pulse Line rigging and sail package, with a square-topped mainsail and self-tacking jib in upgraded sail material, and hardware for rigging a Code 0 (pole and furler). Even a carbon fiber mast is available.

Optional sails include an asymmetrical spinnaker and a choice of Code 0 sails in Mylar.

Raymarine is the marine electronic suite of choice, and the boat can be ordered, in addition to the basic sail away electronics, to add radar and AIS. Outfitting this boat will depends on how the sailing cat will be used. Not everyone plans to cross the Atlantic, as did Bombarda to win her class in the ARC.

Even the bold graphics on the Excess 11 make a statement. This catamaran reflects fresh thinking at Groupe Beneteau, whose mission is to refine the catamaran concept and bring back the pure joy of sailing. The Excess 11 combines the key elements of performance sailing with an interior that is all about comfortable cruising and living aboard.

The world of catamarans has certainly matured in the last decade. So, if you are ready to check out modern catamarans, it is worth taking a close look at the Excess 11. You just might be surprised to be on a boat that not only has all the comfort, space, and stability that one expects from a catamaran, but which is also fun to sail.

The Excess Team continues to research and experiment with better ways of building catamarans. Instead of maintaining status quo, building traditional models using modern materials but with building practices that have not changed in years, there is a concerted effort to move the bar forward with innovation and technology.

And Excess Catamarans created the Excess Lab to study new ideas and systems.

For example, the company is working to improve the design and installation of interior bulkheads. Every effort is made to find ways to reduce weight in the boat, always a good thing on a catamaran. But, more importantly, the goal is to make the boat’s structure as stiff as possible. A more rigid boat is a faster boat, as it doesn’t waste energy flexing under the forces of wind and waves, which is common in many multihulls. The torque exerted on the wide hulls in a seaway tends to flex the structure. In some boats this is quite noticeable, as trim, furniture, and doors expand and contract ever so slightly. The boat isn’t coming apart, but the flexing absorbs energy that would otherwise make the boat sail faster and react quicker to changes at the helm.

The Excess Lab test boat, an Excess 15, is testing several new technologies and systems that will hopefully become available in all Excess models. The Torqeedo Deep Blue 50kW electric propulsion motors are making hybrid propulsion a reality. Using lithium batteries and superb energy management technology that is similar to the latest electric cars, this automation and energy management heralds a new dimension to sailing in the not-too-distant future.

With solar panels, wind generators, and hydro generation made possible by the Torqeedo propulsion systems (the spinning propellers generate electricity when the boat is sailing), the days of needing a diesel generator are numbered.

To continue moving towards sustainable cruising, there are other potential solutions for cruising sailors looking to reduce their carbon footprint. An all-electric galley is now very doable and is a viable solution for those wanting to ditch propane systems and the headaches of handling propane tanks while cruising.

It is commendable to see a boat builder recognize and acknowledge these developments. It is unfortunate that many other boat builders are not keeping up with the realities of the modern cruising world. And they are reluctant to adjust their ways of doing things.

An example of this is the frustration felt by new boat owners who want this new technology but must do it themselves after they pick up their new boat. To get an all-electric galley, they must remove all components of a new propane system installation in order to install an induction stove. Or they must remove the battery system on their new boat and rewire it for lithium batteries with proper ventilation and the necessary energy management system. While builders may see sailors asking for these systems as only a small minority of the sailing community, they are just the early adopters of what will be the new normal in sustainable, cleaner cruising.

The Excess Lab team actively invites sailors to join the Excess Tribe, so its designers, engineers, and naval architects can engage people’s ideas, suggestions, and thoughts from around the world. This will help develop the boats, their systems, and their capabilities.

A published example of this is that cruisers expressed interest in increasing their self sufficiency by asking the builder to design a rainwater catchment system. This can be a valid alternative to an expensive watermaker, which is another system that needs regular maintenance and uses energy. If one can manage the challenges of filtering rainwater before it is put into the water tanks, the large external surface area of a wide catamaran is a perfect platform for making that a design feature of the boat.

The Excess 12 adopts a marked chine and a pronounced deck sheer, creating unique lines. Gunboat 57 Vai Vai is not your average charter cat.

One of the many perks of my job as a yachting writer is that I get to sail aboard a wide variety of boats. I especially love ripping off speed runs aboard some the world’s largest (and fastest) offshore race boats . Now, the truth is, the only reason I’m allowed aboard is because I’m just a humble journalist. But the blistering speeds those boats are capable of is addictive.

And as someone who’s been lucky enough to sail more than my fair share of charter catamarans in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, French Polynesia and other bucket list destinations, I can say every charter cat I’ve ever been on has been a fantastic platform for living large in the tropics. They’re not particularly exciting to sail.

I’m also grateful to say that I’ve sailed on a few high-performance sailing catamarans like the Gunboat 57 Vai Vai . One of the many cool things about Vai Vai is that she’s capable of blow-your-hair-back speeds AND providing just the right amount living space and cruising comforts. But I never knew it was possible to charter something as fast and fun-to-sail as a Gunboat 57—in Newport, Rhode Island in the summer and Caribbean in the winter—until now.

After spending a little time with the VaiVai’s owner Jeff Hager earlier this summer, all I can say is Vai Vai ’s speed potential makes it possible to cover way, way more ground than a more conventional charter boat. And since everyone (even the helmsman and sail trimmer can hang out in main bridgedeck area, and the catamaran never heels more than a few degrees) more speed doesn’t mean less comfort.

In fact, the indoor/outdoor living aboard Vai Vai is next level. The wrap-around windows provide protection from the high winds and spray such a fast boat produces. The 360-degree view is amazing while the massive roof provides essential sun protection. And the sheer size of the bridgedeck is soooo much bigger than what you’d find on a 57-foot monohull. And the nice thing about having the galley and living cabins in the hulls is that each cabin is particularly private.

But, let’s fact it. This boat will not appeal to anyone who rates a charter boat based on how over-the-top-“luxurious” the accommodations are. This is a high-performance sailor’s catamaran for people who don’t want to give up the sheer thrill of sailing on a charter.

The boat that will bring oysters and other raw bar staples out to your boat at anchor is one of the ... [+] many reasons to stop in Cuttyhunk on a charter aboard Vai Vai.

And if you’re lucky enough to book a week aboard VaiVai before she heads south in the fall, be sure to stop for oysters on the tiny island of Cuttyhunk. I guarantee you’ll beat every other sailing charter boat in Newport’s fleet.

Excess 12 Details

The Excess 12 was the first catamaran in the Excess line, introduced in 2019. The models now include the 38-foot Excess 12, the 48-foot Excess 15, and the all-new Excess 11. Two other models will eventually join the lineup.

All Excess models share the design vision of Groupe Beneteau, which is to provide sailors with the nimble and thrilling excitement of sailing like a modern monohull but with the space and accommodations of a cruising catamaran. The Excess Team has succeeded with the Excess line.

With a length of 38 feet, beam of 22’5”, and a draft of 4’3” this mid-sized catamaran is ideal for a couple or family. The standard mast clearance is under 60 feet, so sailors on the East Coast can clear all bridges along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

The Excess 12, as all other models, have two helm stations aft, in each corner of the stern. These positions provide an unobstructed view forward to the bow and beyond, so the person at the helm can sail the boat much like a traditional monohull, with nothing blocking his or her view forward, and with the water’s only inches away. (Much different than traditional catamarans where the helm is positioned on a bulkhead in the cockpit or on the flybridge, far off the water.)

All sheets and halyards lead back to the starboard helm, the primary steering station, and there are large Harken winches to assist in sail management. Thoughtfully, the builder included dedicated bags for the sheets and halyards to keep clutter in the cockpit to a minimum.

One might think the exposed location of these helm stations would be a concern in terms of weather protection, especially compared to bridgedeck helms. While that may be true to some degree, one can fit the small bimini over each helm, and mostly enclose the station with removable Isinglass.

But the reality is—even on cats with bridgedeck helms—when making a passage or when the rain is coming down in buckets, the crew will most always engage the boat’s autopilot to keep the boat on course, and stand watch in the protected cockpit or saloon.

To improve the feel for the helmsman, the steering uses Dyneema lines to connect the wheels with the rudders. This offers a more direct feeling, and one can feel weather helm coming on and work to balance the boat and sails. Finding the groove is difficult with other steering systems.

The lack of tinting in the saloon windows allows unrestricted view of the entire boat from either helm, which is much safer than wondering how close the other bow is to other boats when heading down a crowded fairway. With the sliding convertible bimini open over the cockpit, the person at either helm can easily see the mainsail and its telltales. This is a sailor’s catamaran for sure.

There are three layouts available: a three-cabin boat with two heads, a four-cabin layout with two heads, and a four-cabin version with four heads, that last being the obvious choice for charter operation. The configurations with two heads are dry heads, meaning each has its own separate shower.

The Excess 12 carried 79 gallons of fresh water, and either 42 or 85 gallons for black water, depending on whether there are two or four heads. Fuel capacity is 106 gallons total, with two rotomolded 53-gallon fuel tanks, for the two Yanmar 3YM30 29hp diesel saildrives.

The Excess follows a contemporary interior theme of Honey Teak plywood and sand-colored wood flooring to keep the interior bright and inviting. The saloon may seem compact, until one slides open the door into the cockpit area, turning the entire space into one open and spacious living area. There is a reason so many cruisers have fallen in love with the living space on a modern catamaran, at anchor and under way.

The saloon includes a nav station, an L-shaped settee, and a galley with a three-burner gas stove and oven, stainless-steel refrigerator and large galley sink. The sliding door disappears when open and one can easily envision how nice this boat will be to live on when moored or at anchor while cruising. A large table in the cockpit is perfect for dining, games, and staying in touch with the world from a tablet or laptop. With the overhead bimini closed, there is lovely protection from the sun and rain.

The deck plan and rigging on the Excess 12 reflects a performance orientation. The builder has tried hard to keep weight out of the boat, and the deck gear and rigging are clearly designed to make sailing fast, safe, and under control. Low-stretch Dyneema line is used for the halyards, and pre-stretched polyester lines are used for jib sheets and reef lines.

This Excess 12 and her sister ships reflect contemporary thinking at Groupe Beneteau, and future models will take this direction further, based on assessing owner experiences with the current models. Bringing back the joy of sailing, in a modern comfortable catamaran that is well suited for cruising and living aboard, is the essence of the Excess line.

ABOUT CATAMARAN BOATS

Main Characteristics of Catamarans

Catamarans are easily identified by their double hulls (and in the case of trimarans, triple hulls), which make them stand out among more traditional monohull vessels. Catamarans can be either sail or motor vessels, and vary widely in size from beach-launched and dinghy-style beginner catamarans up to superyacht luxury vessels.

Catamarans have many positive attributes, which are helping them gain popularity throughout the world. Due to their overall wider beam, they offer much more space than a monohull of the same length; for example, a 40-foot catamaran often offers the same space as a 50-foot monohull. They have a unique layout, with larger boats featuring cabins in both hulls and a spacious living space on an above-the-waterline bridgedeck in between the hulls. Many catamarans are also capable of high speeds, especially in a straight line, which makes them popular to race as well as cruise for long distances.

When it comes to safety, catamarans are highly regarded as being virtually unsinkable thanks to having two hulls, a characteristic valued by bluewater cruisers. While they are extremely stable boats and heel far less than a monohull, in storm-force winds and waves they can capsize. Even then, they are much less likely to sink than a monohull.

Types of Catamaran

Sailing catamarans.

Sailing catamarans dominate the multihull market and have been in production for decades. Sales are seeing a huge boom, however, as sailors realize the safety and space advantages they typically hold over monohull yachts. Sailing cats can be as small as a dinghy, sailed off a beach, such as the one- and two-person Hobie Cats. From there they can range up to multi-cabin vessels with huge above-water living spaces designed for long-range voyages.

Power Catamarans

Also rising in popularity are power catamarans , as owners realize the vast living space that they offer. With their wide beam, they allow for multiple cabins between the two hulls and a light-filled, above-water bridgedeck and cockpits that allow for multiple couples or large families to cruise on a vessel that can also be handled by just two people.

Cruising and Bluewater Catamarans

There is considerable crossover between bluewater and cruising catamarans, with many suitable for both coastal weekend cruising and around-the-world ocean voyages. When it comes to either, the positive attributes of the catamaran shine through. Both power and sailing catamarans offer dramatically more space in the same length of boat as a monohull, with huge amounts of living space, wraparound views, full-sized galleys, multiple cabins and heads, and spacious decks. They’re fast and sturdy, too, and don’t heel like a standard monohull under sail, offering incredible stability.

Luxury Catamarans

Beautiful examples of luxury catamarans (many of which are semi- or custom-built) are becoming more commonplace, with some classifying as true superyachts. At a smaller scale, luxury catamarans can offer high-spec living spaces, high performance, green propulsion, renewable energy, and the latest innovation.

Best Catamaran Brands

The catamaran industry is still relatively small compared to that of monohulls, with some key brands paving the way in design and development. As catamarans are favored by many charter companies, some brands such as Lagoon and Leopard produce models for both the charter and private owner market with different layouts. These are big names in the catamaran industry, with a fleet of sturdy, well-designed sailing and motor cats in the 40-60-foot sector.

Within the competitive 40- to 60-foot sector the French company Fountaine-Pajot has been in the industry for over four decades and is also highly regarded for its bluewater cruisers. Other notable brands include Outremer , Catana , Beneteau Excess , Antares, and Xquisite , all designed for long-term livability as well as bluewater cruising. So too are HH Catamarans and BALI Catamaran s, known for their clever use of interior space.

On the smaller end of the cruising catamaran sector are top brands with moderate-sized models such as Seawind , Nautitech and Comar . Their models run the gamut from high-performance cats to smart, modestly priced cruisers.

When it comes to motor catamarans, the market is still relatively small but growing year on year. Many of the brands mentioned above also build excellent motor cats to add to their line-up, while brands such as Invincible Boats , Freeman Boatworks , and Aquila Power Catamarans are specializing in fishing and cruising motor cats.

Why Choose a Catamaran?

Catamarans offer a huge amount of extra space than a monohull of the same length thanks to their wide, double-hull beam. They are also renowned for their stability under sail, and do not keel much. This is ideal for those wanting to cruise gently with friends and family aboard, sail around the world, or for those prone to seasickness.

Sea-keeping ability is our objective with the 40’. We created a boat that would tear through seas from any direction, while still being able to maneuver turns at high speeds. It was designed to go far in less than optimal running conditions. With the optional 800 gallon fuel capacity, the cruise range bumps up to a massive 670 nautical miles. Roundtrip Miami to the Exumas could be done without a pit stop. Not too many center consoles can make it that far, and far fewer can keep up once the seas get rough.

Russian defense plan kicks off separate AI development push

MOSCOW — Russian officials have unveiled a new 10-year defense plan that includes a dedicated section on artificial intelligence, signaling Moscow’s focus on fielding autonomous weapons.

The move comes as Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighbor Ukraine has triggered an AI arms race on the battlefields there, especially in aerial and land drones , that analysts believe will shape future conflicts.

Elements of artificial intelligence have long been used in the Russian military industry, which is tightly controlled by the government. For example, there is a cluster of ground robot makers for the Marker, Platforma-M, Soratnik, Uran-9 vehicles that have supplied their wares for the war against Ukraine.

The country’s missile complex, too, has a history in infusing varying degrees of autonomy into targeting algorithms, perhaps most famously under the Perimeter program, a Soviet-era algorithm sequence for orchestrating a retaliatory nuclear strike.

Now, Russian officials are outfitting equipment returning for repairs from the Ukraine war with new technology, like remotely controlled fire modules, automatic target tracking, and propulsion systems, Vasily Elistratov, who oversees AI technology at the Russian Ministry of Defence, said at the Forum Army-2024 held here this month.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, the volume of the Russian AI market in 2023 reached almost 650 billion rubles, or $7.3 billion, an amount dwarfed by spending in the collective West on various outgrowths of the technology.

The dedicated AI budget line, for which officials have yet to give a number, is meant to help facilitate the transition into defense applications. A specialized department for the development of artificial intelligence is now in place in the Russian Defense Ministry, Chernyshenko announced.

For example, an AI control capability is now in development for the S-500 air-defense system, with threat assessment and damage prediction of a possible ballistic missile attack.

“The Russian defense industry will develop artificial intelligence and automated systems for products with high speed, where errors are not so critical,” said Sergei Smyslov, an independent defense industry expert based in Russia. With that in mind, potential applications include missile defense systems, artillery shells and aerial drones, he added.

Another area of AI use will be aviation and artillery to increase their efficiency, said Pavel Luzin, senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis. Autonomous attack drones will likely remain commodities for a long time. As for autonomous ground robots, most of them will be used to supply troops on the battlefield and evacuate the wounded. AI will also be used in computer modeling of military campaigns during their preparation, Luzin said.

Russia is also going to use AI to improve the production processes of military products, with automatic quality checks that will trigger a manufacturing halt if they fail.

The Ministry of Defense by itself is unlikely to be able to effectively develop weapons with AI. There is a personnel problem in the scientific institutes of the Ministry of Defense, as the best graduates tend to go elsewhere.

Government officials have been building a development track in the government-owned industries instead, for example through Rostec companies and the Era Foundation, according to Luzin.

In early 2022, Rostec State Corporation’s Roselektronika Holding created the Artificial Intelligence Technologies Research Laboratory, which is engaged in research on the use of AI in radio communication systems, development in the field of virtual-reality technologies, big data technologies, and machine learning of deep neural networks.

The Era Foundation seeks to identify new technology among private companies and universities. In August, the foundation selected eight projects – including an unmanned boat, a remote-controlled turret, various drones, and a drone-detection system – that will receive funding to enter mass production.
