Fishing From A Yacht: The Complete Guide

fishing from a sailing boat

Want to know about fishing from a yacht? This article will give you everything you need to get started.

There’s nothing like catching your fish at sea and hearing the satisfying sizzle of the frying pan announcing your dinner. The real treat happens when you get to recount tales about the big fishes you snagged, the stubborn ones that got away, and the wily ones that never took the bait.

The best part of it all is this: It’s easier than you think.

The idea of fishing from a yacht calls for questions such as these: How exactly do I  go about fishing from a sailboat? What equipment and gear do I take along with me? What sot of fish should we expect to catch? Are there any techniques that are particularly useful for fishing while under sail?

This article aims to be a complete guide to fishing from a yacht; including the basic essentials and tools needed to ensure everything goes well right from the start. Enjoy!

Basic List of Fishing Gear

You might be an experienced sailor, but if you’ve never been fishing before there might be a steep learning curve. If you’re a fishing beginner, getting the necessary fishing equipment might be daunting and overwhelming; simply because there are many options to pick from. We’ve put together a basic list of equipment, along with some specific recommendations, with the aim of making this process as easy as possible for you.

1. Fishing rods

Fishing rods are poles used to hurl fishing lines into the water; at a deeper depth. Each rod is differentiated according to its toughness, power, and action.

For fishing from a sailing yacht, we recommend the PLUSINNO Fishing Rod and Reel Combo

2. Fishing reels

These are gears that are attached to the rods to help retrieve baits by drawing in your catch and at selective speed.

3. Fishing lines

Fishing lines are specially crafted strings or cords for fishing. They come in varieties of strengths, elasticity, and visibility. The selection of a type of fishing line depends on the fish you’re aiming to reel in.

The Berkley Trilene XL Monofilament Fishing Line is a good all purpose fishing line.

These hooks could be single, double, treble, or circle. They are used for trapping the fishes by the mouth whenever they take a bite of the bait. The type of fishing hook you choose will depend on the type of fish you are hoping to catch, and where you are fishing (or sailing).

5. Live baits

Baits are what you attach at the end of the hooks to tempt the fishes. There are options of live baits, e.g. worms or even leftover fish from your last endeavour.

Lures are artificial baits fashioned to look like real fishes, to attract predator fishes in the water. These are the most practical for fishing from a sailing boat, as it’s likely that you will be unable to pick up or store live bait easily.

Swivels prevent the problem of the fishing line twisting when the bait is spinning and moving around.

A pack such as the ReeMoo 200PCS Fishing Rolling Ball Bearing Barrel Swivel with Safety Snap Connector Fishing Accessories should give you everything you need.

A sinker is essential in the process of stabilising the fishing line as the hook and baits submerge in the water.

9. Rod holders

Rod holders assure you that your rods are safe. The excitement of making a catch, coupled with the fishing line’s tugging, could yank the rod right out of the boat. Hence, a rod holder is essential.

These rod holders will attach right on to your guardrail.

Other useful fishing gear includes:

1. filleting knife and board for preparing the fish, 2. fishing gloves for protection, 3. leaders for protecting the fishing lines against the sharp teeth of some fishes., 4. gaffs and nets for bringing large fishes on board.

5. You will probably already have one, but a boat hook can be really useful for pulling your catch aboard.

Also, you can take advice from the local tackle shops. That, coupled with the type of fish you’re hoping to catch and the area you’re fishing in, will streamline your options greatly.

Different techniques for fishing from a yacht

Now that you’ve bought your gear, you’re pumped and already set up. What next? There are three basic ways to fish from a sailboat. You could fish while towing a lure behind your boat while either under power or sail (also known as trolling ), or while drifting (also known as jigging ), or at anchor.

1. Trolling

This technique involves casting the hook with a ready bait behind a slow-moving boat. Ideally, you need to move at no more than 2 – 4 knots. Thus speed ensures that the lure appears realistic to the fishes.

yacht cruising fishing

The best way of fishing underway from a yacht is with some form of wind vane or autopilot system, so you can focus on fishing and keeping the lines clear. For this, you will definitely want some form of rod holder attached to your read guard rail to make sure that all the lines are kept clear of the lines and sails, and to free your hands to operate the yacht while underway.

2. Fishing At Anchor

Fishing at the anchor is the simplest method of catching dinner. The simple rocking of the boat will cause the necessary disturbance needed to attract the fishes.

Fishing while under anchor means that you can give it your full attention, and is much like fishing from the shore. However, if using this technique, as opposed to trolling while under sail, you may need to cast your line and bring it in repeatedly in order to make your bait appeal ‘live’.

What Is The Best Time For Fishing from a Yacht?

Generally, it’s advisable to fish at dawn or dusk. However, great fish can and are caught at all hours of the day, including at night. To be honest, sailing is fairly all-consuming at times, so you will probably have to fish at a time that’s dictated by the weather, your crew and your sailing itinerary.

Safety Tips You Ought To Know

As harmless as it could appear at first glance, it is quite possible to sustain injuries while fishing from a yacht or sailboat. Here are a couple of tips to help keep you safe while fishing.

  • When reeling in a fish, don’t do so without wearing hand gloves.
  • Don’t eat any fish you are unsure of. A fish identification chart could come in handy here.
  • Don’t be in a rush to take the hook from the fish’s mouth.
  • Do cover the gaff hook with a cork when not in use.
  • Do attach a leader or swivel before placing the lure.
  • Do select fishing lines that are strong enough to hold on to the fish you hope to catch.
  • Do ask for advice from local fishers about what has worked for them.
  • Do invest in quality equipment.
  • Take extra care if you are sailing with children or dogs on board

It’s also very important to realise that sailing can be dangerous even when you don’t have the added complexities of fishing lies, hooks ad lures to deal with. The key to fishing safely from a sailing boat is to know your limitations, and to only do it when things on the yacht are firmly under control.

And that ends the guide to fishing from a yacht. The best thing to do is seek directions from pros, practice, learn from mistakes, and of course, have fun. Enjoy!

Meet The World’s Largest Sportfishing Yacht

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • February 2, 2024

Royal Huisman Project 406

The world’s largest sportfishing yacht, the six-deck, 171-foot all-aluminum Project 406 from Royal Huisman and Vripack yacht design , is finally here.

It’s been three years since Yachting first reported on Project 406’s development. Details and interior views of the build are still being kept quiet, but what we do know is that Royal Huisman says the supersize sportfishing yacht is headed to its final staging area and preparing to launch in Amsterdam soon.

Royal Huisman Project 406

In a press release the shipyard stated, “Project 406 is designed for an experienced owner who is passionate about fishing. She is a unique vessel in so many respects. Vripack Yacht Design is responsible for the exterior and interior design and naval architecture of this highly prestigious project. Her design is extremely distinctive, with a long bow and high bulwarks sweeping through a clear sheer to a low and uncluttered cockpit aft.”

“The high tower offers outstanding views with a downward angle on the water for specialized fishing. Apart from its practical function, the tower also offers a superb viewing platform for guests, who can follow all the action below. Project 406 effortlessly blends the ultimate sports fishing experience with genuine superyacht scale, comfort and refinement.”

Royal Huisman Project 406

Royal Huisman says a team of more that 350 craftspeople worked on the build over the last three years.

At its 171-foot length overall, Project 406 now tops several other giant custom sport-fishers such as the 144-foot Trinity Bad Company , 130-foot McMullen & Wing Mea Culpa and the 129-foot Yachting Developments Lanakai , by a significant margin.

Royal Huisman Project 406

When the build was first announced in 2021, Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman called Project 406 “the world’s first true sport-fish superyacht,” while Vripack co-creative director Bart M. Bouwhuis says it’s “a sport-fisher on steroids.”

Seeing the results. We’d agree.

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Catamarans

  • By Karl Anderson
  • December 27, 2022

Catamaran spinning circles

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Catamaran foredeck

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Catamaran helm

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Electronics

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than  that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Catamaran running

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. We caught more fish than our arms could bear, and then dashed back to Key West, arriving in time for cocktail hour on the same day. -Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Boating and Fishing Group

Best Sportfishing Boats for Summer 2022

yacht cruising fishing

Apr 4, 2022

The best sportfishing boats will differ for each individual based on their fishing and cruising objectives. You should also consider whether you want to participate in tournaments or just go fishing for fun. We compiled four of the best boats on the market based on reviews, trusted opinions, and overall best-sellers. Each of these will have distinct features and an overall appearance that is unique to them.

Viking 54 and 61 Convertible

A Viking Yacht is a classic staple in the sportfishing world. They are easily identified by their hull design and elegant appearance. Both of these sizes provide more space than any other boat in their class, with an open cockpit and can be outfitted with custom towers. The 54C is a luxury fishing boat with three staterooms and two heads below decks. A Viking Flybridge is a place where design is constantly being tweaked to improve operator comfortability, fish-ability, and guest convenience. 360-degree visibility is provided by a streamlined walk-around center console. The cockpit of the 54C is 154 square feet, while the cockpit of the 61C is 172 square feet, which is slightly larger. Take a look at our Viking 54 Convertible and Viking 61 to see how the layout differs between the two.

Viking 54 For Sale

Jarrett Bay 46

A sport fisher that is low on fuel and known for being easy to handle earned this model a spot on the list of best boats. Jarrett Bay takes pride in the fact that its boats are built with superior craftsmanship, “Our build method not only produces a stronger boat but also one that’s as much as 30% lighter than other sportfishing boats,” says the manufacturer (jarrettbay.com). The easier it is to navigate the waves, the more fuel you save and the more money you have for fishing gear. The attention to detail when selecting their custom interior features is one of its most marketable features.

2001 Jarrett Bay 55 Convertible

Hatteras GT65 Carolina

The overall design of the steeped-back bridge, all-new window design, and hull-side vents combine luxury and practicality. This boat is outfitted with cutting-edge technology, making it capable of overcoming any challenges thrown its way by the sea. From the flybridge or the helm, you can see for miles, providing excellent coverage of the open ocean. The interior of this boat is entirely up to you to design and engineer to suit your needs, ensuring its performance even further. If you want to spend more money on a more elegant feel inside your sportfisher, the Hatteras is a great option.

Bayliss 68 Uno Mas

When comparing this boat to the others, it is clear that the Carolina flare is not present in this build. The curved deckhouse and bridge complement the modern touches on this traditional-style boat. Bayliss still prefers wood as a building material over competitors’ cold-molded wood or foam-core fiberglass. The Uno Mas was built with tournaments in mind and with that goal in mind throughout the entire construction process. The interior of this boat is luxuriously designed, so there is no room for compromise. Because this is the longest boat we’ve mentioned, it has a larger cabin layout in the lower levels.

Best Ocean Boats: Types and Brands to Buy

15th nov 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

What makes a good ocean boat ? It’s a valid question, commonly asked, but as with many boating questions, there is no one answer. In fact, there is no best ocean boat either. Only the best ocean-going boat for you and what you want it to do. Whether it’s offshore fishing, sailing around the world, coastal cruising, or extended voyages, there will be good boats for the task—and others, not so good.

Of course there are many characteristics that ocean-going boats will need to have that are different from those designed to ply gentler inland waters where breaking seas, long distances, and inclement weather rarely if ever are a factor. Here we’ll take a look at the types of boats that are designed for the ocean and also look at some of the best ocean boat brands on the market today.

What Characteristics Do the Best Ocean Boats Have?

Seaworthy in open water and stormy weather: A boat tackling ocean waters needs to be sturdy enough, large enough, and/or nimble enough to navigate the bigger seas and stronger winds that can arise. If you’re tackling oceans, you’ll typically want a boat that is 20 feet long or larger and built with strength. It’s important to know your boat’s limitations, to check the weather carefully before venturing out, and prepare accordingly. Knowing your boat’s range—is it a long-distance, bluewater voyager or a day-sailing coastal boat?—is also key to staying safe.

Deep-V hulls and deep draft: Most ocean-going boats have deep-V hulls and adequate draft to provide extra stability in turbulent waters, high waves, and bad weather. An exception to that are multihulls, which can offer excellent stability thanks to their multiple hulls and wide shape. In addition to a deep V hull, ocean-going boats are often designed with strakes—molded lines running down the hull of motorboats that help them reach planing speed and reduce the slap from large waves. If you don’t plan to venture offshore or undertake long voyages, a shallow or modified V hull is often ideal for more coastal ocean cruising in shallower waters.

Corrosion resistance : In contrast to fresh water, salt water is highly corrosive and damaging to boats, and they need to be designed for and maintained to cope with those damaging effects (see our guide to the differences between saltwater and freshwater boats for more advice). Boats designed for salt water will have marine-grade metals such as stainless steel, and must be built with corrosion-resistant hardware.

Power and fuel capacity : If you’re going to cruise farther, it makes sense that your boat will need a fuel-efficient engine as well as a larger fuel tank to allow you to carry on longer without refueling. Fast boats such as those used for offshore fishing commonly have large powerful engines, allowing you to get to the offshore fishing grounds in less time. For those crossing oceans, sailboats have long been the boat of choice since wind-power is free, if occasionally finicky.

Sleeping and storage capacity: If you’re cruising long distances, you’ll need to ensure that you have enough cabin space, living space, and storage space for supplies to accommodate all those on board. Bunks will typically be fitted with lee cloths to securely hold sleeping crew members in their berths. Ventilation is also critical, allowing fresh air below decks without bringing sea water along at the same time.

Sailboats bring the romance to cruising the oceans, and are able to sail motor-less for thousands of miles, making them the top choice when it comes to long range ocean cruising. The choice of sailboat is endless, but it depends how far you want to travel as to how big a sailboat you’ll need. Coastal sailing can be done in most sizes and styles of sailboat, while you’ll ideally be looking for a strong and sturdy sailboat over 35 feet to travel long distances (see our guide to bluewater sailboats under 40 feet for some exciting small sailboat options and what to look for in an ocean sailboat).

The best ocean sailboat brands

  • Hallberg-Rassy has been producing quality ocean-going cruising boats in Sweden for more than half a century. The company’s current lineup of comfortable, seaworthy, premium-priced yachts from 34 to 69 feet LOA.  Hallberg-Rassy boats for sale
  • Beneteau ’s impressive range of Oceanis cruisers ranges from 31 to 60 feet and offers spacious, versatile layouts and sound performance at a moderate price.  Beneteau boats for sale

Trawler Yachts

Known for their long-range capabilities and excellent fuel efficiency, trawlers are becoming increasingly popular as ocean-going liveaboards. Unlike the fishing vessels from which they draw their name, this new breed of power-cruising yacht typically offers extensive living space, home comforts, and even luxury living, which is highly regarded among many cruising great distances or spending extended periods of time living aboard.

The best trawler yacht brands

  • Nordhavn is a long-standing, all-American brand producing some of the best trawler yachts on the market today. Ranging from 41 feet all the way into superyacht classification sizes, Nordhavn trawlers balance robustness with comfort.  Nordhavn yachts for sale

Center Console Boats

Center consoles boats are high-powered vessels, commonly used for offshore fishing due to their open deck layout allowing for 360 fishability. Fast, stable, roomy, and well-equipped, they are wonderfully versatile and are available from trailerable 17-foot models up to 45 feet and longer, with cabins and heads. They are typically able to handle big seas and weather, but don’t have the sleeping, living, and storage space of longer-range types of ocean boats.

The best center console boat brands

  • Boston Whaler have been around since 1958 and have one of the best reputations in the center console industry for both their fishing and recreational boats.  Boston Whaler boats for sale
  • Everglades is a brand offering 23- to 45-foot center consoles with a clear focus on fishing offshore. It is known equally for premium quality finishings and strong hull construction using high-density foam core to offer a smooth ride in waves. https://www.rightboat.com/boats-for-sale/everglades Everglades boats for sale

Powerful, robust, and equipped to take anglers on deep sea fishing adventures, sport fishing boats are more than capable when it comes to big ocean conditions. They’re capable of cruising up to 100 miles offshore where the big pelagic creatures such as bluefin tuna and marlin live, allowing anglers to fish for several days at a time in comfort. With all the equipment needed for fishing, storing, and living, sport fishing yachts aren’t inexpensive, but you can buy a seriously high-performance yacht for the money.

The best sport fishing yacht brands

  • Viking Yachts has a huge range of world-class sport fishing yachts ranging from towable 38 footers all the way up to 90 feet, although the majority fall within the 45 to 70 feet range. Impeccable finish and extremely high performance is the norm throughout the fleet.  Viking Yachts for sale

Cabin Cruisers

Cabin cruisers make up one of the most versatile and popular of ocean boats as they are multifunctional, seaworthy, and well-designed for coastal cruising. While not normally suited to prolonged periods at sea or long-range cruising, this style of boat features home comforts, modest galley areas, and cabins that can be used for extended trips.

The best ocean cabin cruisers

  • Sea Ray are masters in producing small, luxurious cabin cruisers that offer weekends at sea, plenty of home comforts, and reassuring seaworthiness. Their Sundancer range is from 26 feet to 37 feet, and the SLX series goes up to 40 feet.  Sea Ray boats for sale

Offering pocket-sized luxury and packed with amenities, they remain one of the best brands in the industry.  Chris-Craft boats for sale
  • Grand Banks Yachts is a brand that has shifted over the years from producing what was the iconic ocean-going trawler yacht to a higher-performance luxury motoryacht that fits better in the cabin cruiser category. Design and construction attend to hull shapes, weights, and materials to produce a capable, quiet boat in rough conditions.  Grand Banks Yachts

Cruising Catamarans

Cruising catamarans are fast gaining popularity for their long-range capabilities as well as their stability and huge amounts of extra living and storage space compared to monohulls of the same size. With salons and cockpits that stand well above the water line you get wrap around sea views, as well as huge cabin and galley space. They’re extremely capable blue water cruisers, but also perfect for coastal adventures with larger groups than you could comfortably get on a monohull. They don’t keel over in the same way as sailboats, offering impressive stability and speed, and are fast becoming a popular choice for around the world cruisers and charter companies.

Top 5 Sportfish Yacht Brands [Buyer’s Guide]

The best sportfish yachts for sale..

Travel further and faster with a sportfish yacht . These unmistakable boats are built with purpose. Fishing enthusiasts enjoy the amenities and speed packed into a single machine, while families enjoy the comforts of a much larger yacht.

Sportfish boats can range in price from as low as $90,000 to upwards of a few million — it depends on the year, size, model, and amenities. If you’re in the market for a new or used sportfish yacht , simply choosing a brand can be overwhelming. We narrowed down the top 5 sportfish brands and examples of yachts for sale with Denison.

1. Bertram Yachts

Bertram 61

Bertram sportfish yachts are legends in the marine industry. Their business history began over 60 years ago when the 31 Bertram won the Miami to Nassau Offshore Race. That boat and her performance set the stage for Bertram’s continued success and reputation. Today, Bertram boats are the result of state-of-the-art construction techniques, incorporating vacuum resin-infused composite construction.

Bertram delivers unmatched performance and luxury while still delivering a tournament-winning fishability. For example, the new Bertram 61 , which revolutionized the deep-V hull. This hardcore fishing machine is constructed using cutting-edge composite materials; it incorporates the raised deck and stepped shear of the past with present day elements for a unique look that is all Bertram. And the ride is better than ever.

2. Viking Yachts

82 Viking 2010

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the word ‘Viking’? Scandinavian seafaring warriors… and the New Jersey-based boat brand. Viking Yachts was founded by brothers Bob and Bill Healey in 1964. The business soon become a leader in semi-custom fiberglass yacht production with over 4,000 Viking sportfish and motor yachts delivered. Viking’s highly regarded seafaring reputation is rooted in its commitment to producing 90 percent of the boat in-house.

Viking sportfish yachts are characterized by their massive presence and deep-V hull. Like NINA MARIE , an 82’ Viking 2010. Her 5 stateroom, 6 head layout has the interior volume of a much larger motor yacht, yet the seakeeping ability of a Viking sportfish. This used Viking yacht for sale is powered by twin MTU M93 16V2000 2400HP with just 1800 hours.

3. Hatteras Yachts

70' Hatteras 1999

When your slogan is “experience life without limits” then you’ve caught our attention. Hatteras sportfish yachts are designed and built to offer an unmatched boating experience. The business began in 1959 in North Carolina, when founder and marlin fisherman Willis Slane envisioned a fishing vessel that could withstand the unforgiving waters off Cape Hatteras.

In 1960, the company introduced the Hatteras 41 Convertible, the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat available in the 40-foot range. What followed were continuous innovations and a remarkable legacy of superior craftsmanship, engineering, and attention to detail that remain the brand’s hallmarks sixty years later.

Hatteras sportfish yachts – such as JUST LIKE THAT , a 70’ Hatteras 1999 – offer plenty of outriggers, rod holders, storage, and spacious lounge areas. This used Hatteras for sale features an aft cockpit that’s a fisherman’s dream with a molded-in transom fish box, updated refrigerator/freezer plates, fresh/salt water wash downs, rod holders, and built in step boxes. The Hatteras modified-V hull delivers a sharp entry and a stable ride. No pounding here.

4. Merritt Yachts

80 Merritt Sportfish Yacht For Sale

Merritt’s Boat and Engine Works is a family-owned and operated business that started in 1948. The yard is located in Pompano Beach, Florida, and has gained a reputation for high-quality work and friendly customer service. The first boats built by Merritt were strictly for catching tuna. But they lacked creature comforts. With enhancements over the years, the small mom-and-pop business became known for building all-around outstanding boats.

EL CHUPACABRA is an 80-foot Merritt built in 2006 that boasts a high-quality composite construction and exceptional craftsmanship. Her unmistakable profile is bound to attract attention on the water as she’s powered by MTU M91 16V2000 engines. Run, don’t walk to this opportunity to own a classic Merritt sportfish .

5. Cheoy Lee

70' Cheoy Lee 1988

Cheoy Lee is backed by five generations of shipbuilding expertise. The company began in Hong Kong in 1936 building merchant sailing vessels during World War II. By the 1950s, the Cheoy Lee began building motor yachts while embracing the latest technological advances. Today, the company builds semi-custom yachts for owners who value performance, innovation, quality, and service.

FOUR ACRES , a 70’ Cheoy Lee 1988, remains one of the more aggressively styled big sportfishing yachts in the late-model marketplace. The ride is soft and dry as she’s built on a double-V bottom and Carolina flare bow. The accommodations of the boat rival those of a good-sized motor yacht thanks to an impressive 20-foot beam. This used sportfish for sale is available with Denison.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or veteran boat owner, a sportfish is an exciting purchase. You’ll gain access to a different world of boating and fishing thanks to advanced technology, amenities, and performance. Contact a Denison yacht broker to find your next sportfish yacht.

Where to buy sea ray slx 400 ob:.

Sea Ray’s flagship is the SLX 400 OB, a 42-foot platform with outstanding use of space and basic accommodations, that embodies bowrider performance and social options with cabin cruiser comfort.

All told, this boat has seating for up to 22 people and can reach 60 mph.

The SLX 400 is “The Entertainer,” dubbed for the copious space for lounging and hanging out on deck. The starboard side features a fold-down swim terrace extending the boat’s beam by three feet and adding room to the swim platform. A well-appointed wet bar galley with electric grills stands opposite a huge L-shaped settee and table.

If you’re worried that driving this 20,000-pound boat might feel sluggish, think again. The Mercury V-8s get the boat to plane in just under five seconds. The ride is solid and comfortable, with automatic trim tabs and an optional Seakeeper gyro stabilizer. When it comes time to head home, the Mercury joystick steering makes even the trickiest docking scenarios easy as cake.

Where to buy Axopar 45 XC:

The latest boat from Finnish builder Axopar is nothing short of a bigger, better adventure machine. The Axopar 45 XC Cross Cabin features a glorious upper pilothouse and salon, terrace seating, a customizable aft deck, and the option for two cabins and two heads.

A wave-cutting V-hull shape puts the performance of this adventure boat in focus, but the surprising amenities crammed into this platform impress equally as much.

Tiara Yachts

Tiara 43 LE

tiara-43le-exterior profile2

Where to buy Tiara 43 LE:

The Tiara 43 LE is the first in the company’s new series of performance cabin cruisers. If it looks fast, it’s because it is fast. This boat, powered by twin Mercury V12 outboards churning out a combined 1,200 horsepower, gets up to 30 in about 11 seconds and tops out around 54 miles per hour.

As is expected from a brand like Tiara, this small motor yacht is beautifully appointed and well-equipped. The entire port gunwale opens into a large swim platform, opening up the cockpit space for water-fun or entertaining.

Down below, the boat has a large island berth forward and a separate double stateroom to midship. The pilothouse is enclosed with tempered glass all around and provides awesome visibility and all-season comfort.

All in all, the Tiara 43LE is a cabin cruiser that drives with power and elegance. Unlike other vessels in the class, however, this boat lacks a common area to work and eat, like a large cockpit table or a dinette in the pilothouse. The seating arrangements work great for socializing on the water, but you might want to look at the 48LE for overnights or longer-distance voyaging.

Eastbay Yachts

The Grand Banks Eastbay 44

Grand Banks East Bay 44 Boat

Where to buy The Grand Banks Eastbay 44:

The Eastbay 44 from Grand Banks is the company’s smallest Downeast cabin cruiser. It’s one of the first boats released by the brand under the leadership of CEO Mark Richards.

In a world filled with production boats, here is a moving work of art—a boat built as good as it looks that can carry you and your family to distant shores with comfort and ease.

A joystick control and widely-spaced engines make docking in tight spaces easy. Responsive throttles and the deep-vee hull make shooting even the roughest inlet a non-event.

But the resounding virtue of the Eastbay 44 is its build quality. This brand prides itself on pursuing perfection, and the Eastbay 44 might be the closest thing to it in the small motor yacht or cabin cruiser categories.

The Eastbay draws on the heritage of the Maine lobster boat. She’s beamy for a spacious interior and a stable ride. Her attractive, low-profile design contrasts the angular and tall flybridge offerings of her competition. And her beautifully appointed pilothouse is perfectly sheltered from the elements when you want to be. But, with the push of the button, the windows open, and the space has as much fresh air as you’d ever want.

  • Length Overall: 48'10"
  • Length On Deck: 43'7"
  • Beam: 14'7"
  • Displacement: 36,883 lbs.
  • Engine: 2x Volvo Penta D6-IPS 650S (480 hp, six-cylinder, pod-drive diesels)
  • Top Speed: 33 knots (38 mph)
  • Cruise Speed: 28 knots (32 mph) at 27 gallons per hour
  • Cruise Range: 492 nautical miles

Beyond helm features for easier docking, this cabin cruiser is designed to carry you and your family comfortably. There’s not really another 40-foot flybridge that offers as much as the 1295 for the same price point.

The spacious salon level features sliding glass doors that open onto the aft cockpit. The aft galley is fully appointed and allows for the perfect flow for socialization during meals and hanging out. The cockpit features a walkthrough boarding door to port and a large fold-down swim terrace to starboard.

Finally, the staterooms and heads are large and comfortable, with plenty of storage and headroom below.

Rinker Boats

Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

Rinker 270 Express Cruiser

Where to buy Rinker 270 Express Cruiser:

The Rinker boat company may have gone the way of the dinosaurs, but the 270 Express Cruiser will be around for a while. Polaris has assumed ownership and support for these agile cruisers.

Enjoy 6’5” cabin headroom, a fully equipped galley, a head with wet shower, and sleeping quarters that can stretch 4 people if it has to.

Rinker has designed a smaller boat that has designs that make it seem bigger. Step inside and see how functionality isn’t compromised by a more streamlined setup.

An older, discontinued model, but a good one.

And the Express Cruiser certainly loves to move, meaning you got the amenities in something that motors like a speed boat.

Wakeboarding and tubing is quite a reasonable thing to do with the 270.

Choose either the MerCruiser SeaCore Drive or the workhorse Volvo Penta OceanX Drive for gasoline or diesel motors respectively.

As an update, this model seems to be discontinued, but as a used boat for sale with low running hours, it could be an affordable way to satisfaction.

  • Length: 28’10”
  • Dry weight: 7,085lbs
  • Capacity: sleeps 4
  • Motor : Inboard MerC (gasoline) or Volvo Penta (Diesel)

Regal Boats

Regal 42 Fly

Regal 42 Fly

Where to buy Regal 42 Fly:

This spacious flybridge yacht is one of Regal’s flagships. It’s a cabin cruiser that flirts with the lifestyle aboard a larger motor yacht.

She’s already spacious, but the large windows add an incredibly open and light-filled feeling to all the spaces below.

The flybridge has a welcoming open layout for hanging out in the sun with 4-6 friends, and the upper salon, with its fully appointed galley, makes meal prep easy. Below decks, you’ll find two large staterooms, one with a queen-sized island berth and the other with an even larger king that can convert to two twins.

There’s a choice of adding an extra head instead of the lower galley and adding privacy walls. Performance-wise, driving this boat with Regal’s high-quality gauges and consoles will be a pleasure.

  • Length: 41 feet, 11 inches
  • Beam: 13 feet
  • Draft: 44 inches
  • Dry Weight: 27,400 lbs.
  • Fuel Tank: 258 gal.
  • Water Tank: 73 gal.
  • Power Options: 2x Volvo D6 diesel with IPS drive (870 hp)

Back Cove Yachts

Back Cove 34O

Back Cove 34O

Where to buy Back Cove 34O:

The perfectly balanced combination of performance, comfort, and downeast seaworthiness make the Back Cove 34O a cruising couple’s dream.

Her entirely new hull features Trailing Edge Lifting Surface (TRELIS) *D* design technology and is fitted with a standard bow thruster. The 34O delivers cruise and top-end speeds approximately 10 knots faster than the traditional single diesel Back Cove.

Built with entertaining in mind, the cockpit boasts an elegant salon with a versatile and comfortable settee along with a fully equipped galley. The aft-facing seat converts into a helm deck U-shaped dinette or second berth.

We’ve been seeing the double outboard motor solution on bigger boats in the last few years, and the Back Cove 340 does it pretty well. With twin 300hp Yamahas (or upgrade to 350hp with optional Suzuki), the performance of this cabin cruiser seems like a ski boat when it gets the chance to stretch its legs.

A couple of highlights of this cabin cruiser is the inventive helm step that provides excellent visibility as well as loads of storage space below the helm deck—large enough to fit all your water toys and fishing gear.

When dusk turns to dark, head over to the spacious master cabin where you’ll find a large and comfortable bed as well as a separate head and shower.

  • Length: 38’11”
  • Beam: 11’10”
  • Dry weight: 17,000lbs
  • Motor: 2 outboards

The Azimut Magellano 43 deserves a place in our list for her unparalleled mix of solid-performance with uber-luxurious surroundings. It’s a cabin cruiser built for long-range yachting. You’ll want to just keep sailing on.

It features three decks of pure sophistication and attention to detail. It comes with three cabins, two full heads, a fully equipped galley, and loads of room to walk around, entertain, and relax.

Designed for luxury cruising, this trawler-inspired vessel comes with the unique Dual Mode hull, which ensures comfortable navigation and excellent seafaring even in choppy, deep-sea conditions.

This cabin cruiser, like the Grand Banks in this list, challenges the category and will likely be referred to by their owners and spectators as a beautiful yacht . That’s where this model fits on this list: a cabin cruiser boat that’s bigger in every way, including style and price.

It’s designed for extended voyages on bigger seas, but it’ll generate attention in the marina. The Magellano’s size will, however, make finding a slip difficult, so bear this in mind.

Jeanneau America

Jeanneau NC1095 Fly

Jeanneau NC1095 Fly

Where to buy Jeanneau NC1095 Fly:

The NC1095 Fly is the culmination of a practical approach to a cabin cruiser with intelligent design spawned by a modern interpretation of what cruising is all about. This is an amazing 3 stateroom, 35-foot boat that can so easily be called a home away from home.

This is a plus model option to Juneau’s 35 foot flagship NC1095 that adds the flybridge for those lovely sunny days when you can lavish in getting closer to the sun. It has ample space in the aft section of the cockpit with a movable sofa seat when tilting the two outboard motors.

The salon itself is full of storage cubbies, a long galley table with sink and stove and a modular table that doubles as an additional berth. With the cockpit enclosure around the aft seating area, the living space becomes that much more impressive in a 35 footer.

The Fly is easily big enough for a family or a small party to while away a weekend or a summer playing cards, reading, while cruising to another horizon.

As a performance vessel, the NC1095 Fly handles like a bowrider . It’s twin Yamaha outboards are quiet but insistent and the controls–including bow thruster–make turning, docking, navigating intuitive and responsive. Powered by Garmin instruments with optional auto-pilot solutions, even less-experienced mariners will feel more at ease behind the wheel.

Speaking of space again, the recessed starboard side deck makes for quick access for laying out fenders and moorings, while access to the boat’s mechanical, power and fuel systems makes visual inspection and maintenance that much easier.

The V-berth stateroom has a lot of natural light and smart storage. The second berth has plenty of space with standing room too, while the third stateroom–a little smaller–still has a double bunk and an optional second fridge.

Built in the Cadillac, Michigan factory the venerable Juneau Yacht company has joined its artisan past with its desire to adapt and improve. The flydeck variant of their motor boat flagship is testament to Juneau’s history of understanding what works and doing it even better.

Sea Ray Sundancer 320

Sea Ray Sundancer 320

Where to buy Sea Ray Sundancer 320:

In many ways, it was the Sundancer that made Sea Ray famous. With their classy blend of speed and overnight accommodations, these express cruisers are the perfect size for most boaters looking to get out on the water and enjoy a second home away from home.

Sundancers in the 31 to 32-foot range have long been the best sellers. It’s the Goldilocks boat that is neither too large nor too small. The current Sundancer 320 is available with either Mercruiser sterndrive or Mercury outboard power.

The Sundancer features some of the great technology you’ll find in other Sea Rays, including the submersible swim platform and plush seating. The bow now features a clever sun lounge with a walkway and removable table, making a much more functional space compared to similar cabin cruisers of the past.

  • Length: 32 feet, 10 inches
  • Beam: 10 feet, 7 inches
  • Draft (max/min): 41 inches/30 inches
  • Weight: 14,000 pounds
  • Power: 2x Mercruiser 6.2L MPI ECT Bravo Three X (300 hp each)
  • Number of people: Yacht Certified
  • Fuel: 158 gallons

Jeanneau Leader 33

Jeanneau Leader 33

Where to buy Jeanneau Leader 33:

Cruise in functional style aboard the Leader 33. A moderately sized cabin cruiser with surprising space and plush interiors, the Leader 33 is a good entry boat into touring.

Available in two versions: an Open version with an arch and a Sport Top version with an electrically opening hard top, the Leader 33 boasts a spacious and functional layout which makes relaxing and entertaining a breeze.

Long windows in the hull offer beautiful sea views along with plenty of natural light in the cabin below. Also, two galleys, two sleeping berths, and an expansive head with a separate shower stall make the Leader 33 the ideal boat for a weekend getaway.

Junneau is a well-established name and there are plenty of solid used options for this model. When you find one for sale at a dealer or marina, take it for a spin.

  • Length: 34’8”
  • Dry weight: 10,829lbs

Regal 38 SAV

Regal 38 SAV

Where to buy Regal 38 SAV:

The Regal 38 SAV defies being put in a category. It looks like a simple center console, but it has the amenities of a fully-furbished cabin cruiser. It will thrive in the warm Gulf waters and the Caribbean.

The SAV stands for Sports Activity Vessel. In other words, it’s an SUV on the water with the functionality to match its name. Adjustable seating and the ability to go to the beach and go on a blue water cruise will keep the whole family happy, whether fishing, cruising, tanning, or playing in the water.

If you’re in the market for a boat that can comfortably entertain a crowd or take the family on a comfortable cruise, the 38 SAV is worth a look. While not as performance-oriented as other options, it offers features and a layout comparable to the Tiara 43 LE or Sea Ray SLX 400 but at a friendlier price point than either. If you want something with a fully enclosed cockpit, check out the Regal LS36 .

  • Length: 39 feet, 3 inches
  • Beam: 11 feet, 11 inches
  • Draft (min/max): 23/31 inches
  • Dry Weight: 18,800 lbs.
  • Fuel Tank: 340 gal.
  • Power Options: 3x Yamaha 300 hp outboard

A Quick Guide to Cabin Cruisers

They need a little more than just a cabin under the deck to be called a cabin cruiser. Think  bowrider or runabout  and expand outwards with a mind toward extending your daytrip so it potentially never ends. That entails more space and comfort like you get with your typical luxury yacht combined with performance associated with the bowriders.

The cabin cruisers we have on the list are designed with a maritime intelligence that incorporates deep and fundamental logic required to make recreational sailing as a lifestyle both safe and enjoyable. A model like the NC1095 Fly is a great example of a modern interpretation of a cabin cruiser that really embodies the maritime equivalent of a newer RV.

When deciding what vessel is right for you, figure out how much space you need, how long you’re going to be cruising and pay particular attention to how comfortable you feel navigating tighter waterways and docking. Smaller craft like the Chris-Craft 34 are easier to wrap your head around and if your needs and horizons are closer to home than this is a good vessel for cruising shorter overnight excursions and even navigating smaller waterways like river systems.

The bigger boats, like the Grand Banks 44, will appeal to longer voyages further out at sea. These are vessels that could even traverse the Atlantic–for the intrepid mariner–and have a great go of the Mediterranean.

While size will increase the challenges when navigating and docking (make sure to use boat fenders when docking), these modern cabin cruisers have been designed so well in order to make the pilot seem a steady, old hand at the helm.

Consider the need for bow thrusters, whether you want inboard motors or outboard motors (the latter tend to be cheaper and easier to maintain), air conditioning/heating, where you can get a boat slip and how readily available guest slips are for boats with the different beams (width).

These boats are still relatively easy to operate but they can go quite fast on the water. Remember to observe the customs and rules on the waves. Most importantly: enjoy.

Take a look at these videos that demonstrate some of the models on our list:

Frequently asked questions

A cabin cruiser is a type of powerboat that typically ranges from 25 to 45 feet in length. Because they come with sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities they are a top choice for weekend trips but also manageable enough for quick day trips.

These are some of the best cabin cruiser brands on the market today:

  • Cruiser Yachts

Prices will vary depending on the size as well as the included amenities.

A cabin cruiser usually costs between U$100,000 to U$700,000. However, more sophisticated models, like the  East Bay 44  can go for as much as U$1 million.

Cabin cruisers are very similar to larger yachts. They can cruise long distances and they offer many facilities that help keep passengers comfortable during long haul trips, but unlike a large yacht, a cabin cruiser boat does not require a professional crew aboard.

Love it! It would be fun to test drive each!

Bradley Axmith

It’s possible to test a lot of them at a boat show. Board and check out the interior and, if you’re lucky, join along for a sea trial.

This is great feedback, and we’ll take it into account when updating our guides.

This is a great list. I keep coming back to them to discover more manufacturers and models. Is it possible, however, to add cost ranges to these models or generic $$$ cost brackets. The boat companies all like to hide the cost and not knowing the brands I am spending most of my time trying to figure out which one is the best value. You mentioned a range of $100k to $700k but I have yet to find the $100k model

What are the best “hardtop Express Cruisers in the 36′ LOA range with OB engines and a fully enclosed weatherproof helm/salon area? I would like a boat that can sleep six adults.

Hey Keith. Thank you for your service. Some of the boat makers have military discounts like Crestliner (for fishing boats mainly: https://www.crestliner.com/specials/military-discount/ ), but talk to the guys at your local marina. I’ve found that they do reward service with a price cut sometimes. Check out these guys too: https://www.harborsidemarinesales.com/

Bluewater Sailing Techniques Part 12: Fishing from your boat

Yachting World

  • August 13, 2015

Fishing from your boat is one of the many fun activities while long-distance cruising. Dan Bower's advice on catching a fish for your supper is the last in our series of Bluewater Sailing Techniques

Now there are as many fishing ‘golden rules’, guaranteed methods and fishy tales as there are fishermen. There are also some excellent books dedicated to the subject – these are rather large – so there is a lot to say. This is what works for us; it’s simple and we rarely go hungry.

Choosing your gear

There is a lot out there, racks of rods, reels and shelves of shiny, colourful lures of all shapes and sizes. The best thing is to seek advice from the shop and find out what works for the area you’re fishing in and what fish you’re looking to catch.

You don’t need a rod and reel set-up to land a fish, but it does make your life easier, and the bigger and stronger the equipment, the more it will cost, but the less work it will be to bring one in and the more ‘strikes’ you will land successfully.

On many of my early transatlantic deliveries our fishing kit consisted of some line and an empty 2lt water bottle to wrap it around. With this budget and easy-stow system we landed some fairly sizeable catch, but it required thick gloves, a bit of a fight and all three crewmembers pulling the line. We also lost a few, together with line and lures.

If you’re going for hand line, then it’s the thicker the better, without the clutch lessening the snatch, a bigger line is less likely to snap – it’s also much easier on the hands when pulling it in.

Aboard Skyelark we have a simple, short rod – Penn Tuna Stick with 345 GTI reel and 60lb line – mounted on a stanchion and tend to favour the squid-style surface lures in various colours as bait.

Before setting off on an ocean crossing we encourage our crewmembers to go off in search of their own favourite lucky lure and so we acquire an eclectic selection with all the bubble-blowers, rattlers and teasers that the salesman proffered, and to be fair most do quite well.

DAN WITH LURES copy

Blues, pinks, reds and whites are probably the winners in the tropics.

Line length

After selecting the lure and tying it on, it then comes down to line length, and you want the lure to be just beyond the effects of your wake. We usually go for around four boat lengths (60m), but the faster you are travelling the more line should go out. The boat’s wake causes a disturbance and intrigues the fish, they come up to take a look and, always peckish, they go for the lure.

If it’s too close to the boat the wake will hide it and too far out you may get fewer strikes. A good rule of thumb is 10x the boat speed to give metres – eg 5 knots = 50m, 6 knots = 60m.

We experiment by counting the number of passes of the line guide, as it’s hard to judge how far back a semi-sinking lure is. If you’re using a reel then you can set the break so it only lets out line when a fish strikes. If you’re not using a reel then you need something to take the ‘snatch’ – in this way the line doesn’t snap and the hook becomes more firmly embedded. A small piece of bungy works well.

Reeling it in

It’s called fishing, not catching . . . but hopefully before too long you will get a strike signalled by a satisfying clicking and the line running away. The first thing is to increase the drag (clutch) on the reel. You don’t want to stop the line going out completely as a strong fish will snap it, but you want to increase the drag to tire it out.

You can play the drag to exhaust the fish; however, the more you let out, the more you bring in, but it’s easier to bring in if it’s tired, hence the balance.

It’s also useful to slow the boat down at this stage – consider bearing away or furling the headsail. To wind in, set the drag on the reel so that the line will wind in, but not so tight that the fish can’t take some more if it is feeling particularly energetic.

CATCH FISH copy

Once the fish is surfing on the surface, you can make good progress; if it gains purchase and dives deep, the work will become slow. Be patient and if necessary allow out more line.

Getting your catch on board

Once you have the fish close to the boat, it’s time to consider how to get it aboard as quickly and cleanly as possible. It’s worth noting that under sport fishing rules ‘leader in hand’ counts as a catch so once you’re here, it’s as good as caught technically so even if it gets away it’s a victory.

The surest way of landing the fish is to gaff it. A gaff is a big sharp hook on a stick and allows you to hook into the meat before the fish is out of the water. Failing this, you can pull it up onto a sugar scoop or under a guardrail – but be mindful that during this stage a final flurry of rapid thrashing can set your meal free. A gaff is a good investment.

We once caught a beautiful white marlin, which was swimming beside the boat. Neither I nor my able mate was keen on the idea of simply hoiking a monstrous thrashing fish onto the deck and would have been quite happy to let it free, but surrounded by eager clients we had to try something.

GAFF copy

The first attempt was to pass a loop of line over the fish and tighten it over its tail – the plan was to get a firm hold and pull one at each end. This wasn’t a success and neither was our hastily put together homemade gaff – the fish in this case jumped the hook and got away unharmed. After blogging our woes, a new gaff arrived for Christmas and the next marlin was landed.

Killing it!

Now comes the rather grisly bit: the fish does have to die, but how best to do it? Whacking it with something heavy – a winch handle is usually the instrument of choice – can be slow, bloody, inhumane and result in some chips in the glassfibre.

Our favoured method is to hold the fish head first in a bucket of water and cut into the gills with a sharp knife. This way the fish will pump its blood out into the bucket: no mess, no drama and it is better for the meat.

Another option is to inebriate it with hard spirits, straight into the gills, or knife in the back of the head/spinal column. Whatever method you use, it needs to be quick – this is kinder to the fish and better for the meat.

Fish supper

Next prepare for cooking. With a small oven-sized fish we would favour keeping it whole, so first it needs to be gutted – we do this in a bucket. For bigger fish this is not practical; even just cutting through the spine can require a cleaver and a mallet.

FILLET copy

For these we fillet the fish there and then, running a sharp filleting knife down each side of the bone and removing the flesh. The fish doesn’t need to be gutted, and the head and carcass can be thrown back as part of the food chain. Watch how we do this in our online video.

Where to fish

We generally deploy a line whenever on passage, either across an ocean or just between islands. We don’t fish near reefs or in passes because of the distraction and the risk of ciguatera poisoning (see below). The best times are dawn and dusk, but there is no hard rule; you can strike any time.

We don’t fish at night for the practical reason of dealing with a catch in the dark, so our line goes out just before dawn and in after sunset – you have to be in it to win it!

A note on ciguatera poisoning

Ciguatera is a toxin that can accumulate in fish that feed off the algae on coral reefs (or eat the fish that do) and while it’s harmless to the fish it can be very unpleasant for humans. Although rarely fatal, symptoms occur within three to five hours, but can develop and worsen over four or five days and can last for weeks, months and even for years!

Tingling and numbness around the nose and mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea, aching joints and muscle pain, weak pulse, feeling cold and weak, shocks and burning sensations are all possible – and medical attention should be sought.

The toxin is generally limited to reef fish and their predators, so is more relevant to spear fishing or trolling around the reefs. The bigger the fish, the more likely that the toxin levels will be high – they have eaten a lot of little fish – so keeping to smaller fish lessens the risk. However, the toxin levels can also build up in humans before becoming dangerous, so if you regularly consume reef fish, you are at risk.

Usually anything caught offshore is not affected and pelagic fish are safe (tuna, mahi mahi, marlin, wahoo). The only sure way is to abstain from eating reef fish, but you’re fairly safe if you take advice – local fishermen will know. Ask them what is safe from which areas (this can change from reef to reef). Groupers, jacks, barracuda and the moray eel are particularly predatory fish and are the most at risk, so should be avoided.

Our approach aboard Skyelark is to eat anything caught offshore and we prefer to buy any reef fish from fishermen or eat them in a restaurant where the chances are you should be OK.

Do’s and don’ts

√ Do experiment with different coloured lures.

√ Do slow the boat down to help reel it in.

√ Do throw a line out when on passage.

√ Do buy the best rod and reel your budget allows.

√ Do take care with the hook as you bring the fish on board. One crewmember on an ARC yacht needed surgery to remove a fish hook from his arm.

√ Do seek advice from local sailors about what works for them.

x Don’t take any risks with eating a fish that may have ciguatera.

x Don’t be afraid to cut the line if you end up with a fish much larger than you are happy to try to land.

x Don’t try to pull a fish in on a handline without slowing the boat right down and wearing gloves.

x Don’t Don’t troll around reefs or passes if you’re not sure about ciguatera .

  • Reels can take a lot of punishment and it is worth buying some spare parts if you are away on a long trip.
  • A gaff is a really useful piece of kit for getting the fish on board – it can be a big struggle without one.
  • Two hours after sunrise or before sunset is the best time to fish.
  • Make sure you have attached a swivel and leader before the lure.
  • Use line thick enough and strong enough for the fish you hope to catch.
  • Try making your own lures out of rubber gloves.
  • Rig flying fish for bait.

There is a ciguatera test kit – see www.cigua.com

Baked fish (mahi mahi)

1 oven-sized whole mahi mahi, or fillets

2 onions, sliced

Garlic cloves to taste.

Splash of lemon juice or white wine

Cover fillets or stuff whole fish with onions, lemons and garlic, place in tin foil, splash over wine and bake for 20mins or until cooked. Serve with a bit of butter and sides.

Family-Friendly Fishing Boats

These seven new multipurpose powerboats offer fun and comfort for the whole family.

270 Dauntless fishing

There was a time when boats were just boats. If you weren't a sailor, you were a powerboater, and if so, you were happy to have one — any one, any size — so you could buzz around the bay, cast a line, waterski, or do whatever you loved to do on the water.

Times change, and powerboats evolved into specialized niche designs — specifically for lake or saltwater fishing, extended cruising, watersports, and more. When times were good, the lucky ones could afford multiple boats — maybe one to go fishing with the guys on Saturday, another to tool around the lake or take a river cruise, then go for a swim with the family on Sunday.

Boat designers and builders have been trying to cram multipurpose utility into boats for years, but they've only recently refined them into truly multipurpose designs. One such trend, for lack of a better term, is the "family fish boat" — a well-equipped fishing boat that has the creature comforts of a cruising day boat.

Sure, the integrated rod holders are there, but the freeboard is at the right height for leaning into with a rod, and those padded coaming bolsters at the transom fold down into a comfortable bench seat. In fact, there is a lot of seating all around, whether it's a center-console or the re-emerging dual-console design — along with a head and swim platform with freshwater wash down.

"We designed the boat from scratch, rather than retrofit one of our fishing boats," says Howard Libin, business development director for Sailfish, of the new Sailfish 236CC. "We call it 'intelligent ergonomics,' with wide passage around the center-console and a stand-up head. From the snap-on cushions to the retractable ski pole to the deep freeboard that's good for leaning but also keeps kids inside the boat — nothing was an afterthought. It was a thought from the start."

Sailfish blazed the trail of a "dual-purpose offshore boat" in 2004, but a stroll through any boat show will reveal that others are onto the idea, and people seem to like them. "They want a versatile boat," adds Libin of his customers. "It's a societal change."

Ranger Boats, nearly 50 years old and the largest maker of bass boats in the country, has cast its line into the family fish-boat market with its new 2350 Bay Ranger. "It's everything a one-boat family needs," explains Ranger's saltwater manager, Larry Jett. "Dad meets his buddy at the ramp at 5 a.m. By noon, Mom and the kids will replace Dad's friends and head to the sandbar. It's missing nothing for both applications and appeals to that one-boat family that still wants the classic lines of a Carolina-style bay boat."

Scout Boats recently added the 215 XSF to its sportfishing line, which offers forward seating in the bow as well as a forward sun lounge/coffin box with a cushion. Other standards include port and starboard swim platforms with an integrated ladder.

"This boat appeals to the family that wants it all: fishing capabilities with ultimate comfort, the ability to picnic and entertain with plenty of room for seating, high sides with bolsters and grab rails for the kids, and a deep-V hull that slices through the water," says Alan Lang, director of sales and marketing.

Whether you're an angler who also likes to cruise or a cruiser who also enjoys casting a line, these new boats may offer the best of both worlds.

Grady-White Fisherman 23

Grady-White's Fisherman 236 is built to the same Grady offshore standards with a composite stringer system and transom, foam flotation, and self-draining cockpit. Toerails, twin 89-quart bow fishboxes (port and starboard), a 160-quart fishbox in the transom, a 62-quart insulated and lighted aft livewell with an 800 gph pump, and eight rod holders and six rod racks make this a true midsize center-console fishing boat. Cushioned bow seating with optional foldaway forward-facing backrests, cushioned forward console seating with backrest, a foldaway transom bench seat, and swim platforms port and starboard with integrated ladder and transom door make for a comfortable daycruiser. A stand-up console head and cushioned lean bar with backrest for the skipper add to the overall comfort. gradywhite.com

The first thing that stands out with Scout Boats' new 215 XSF center-console is the wraparound bow seating that, with the addition of optional back-rest inserts, makes for a comfortable forward area. A plush forward sun lounge/coffin box cushion with arm rests doubles the forward seating. Other standard features include port and starboard swim platforms with a starboard ladder; a powder-coated aluminum leaning post with backrest and a 72-quart Igloo cooler; a Fusion Bluetooth stereo; a raw-water wash-down livewell; stainless-steel bow rails, and an aerated baitwell with high-speed pick-up. The boat runs on Scout's patented fuel-saving flared-bow NuV3 hull design. Aluminum T-top, folding transom seat, and portable toilet are options. scoutboats.com

Ranger Boats, well known for its center-console and bass-fishing boats, steps into the "family boat" niche with its 2350 Bay Ranger, a bay boat center-console with custom-fitted marine upholstery all around. Seating for eight includes port and starboard lounge seats with cushioned forward-facing backrest, cushioned integrated forward-console seating with a backrest, a cushioned contoured transom bench and twin-seat leaning post with backrest and foldaway armrests. A large skid-resistant bow casting deck (with storage beneath) stays true to Ranger's fishing lineage, along with a 120-quart cooler/casting deck step, a recirculating aerated 30-gallon livewell/baitwell/leaning post combination, a custom fish box, power-ventilated storage, 10 rod holders, and a self-bailing cockpit. The 2350 also includes a swim platform with integrated ladder and step-in console head. rangerboats.com

Length: 27'4" | Beam: 9' | Weight: 4,800 lbs. (without engine) | Max Persons: 12 | Max HP: 450 | Fuel: 150 gal. | MSRP: $108,690 (with single 300-hp Verado)

Boston Whaler is one of the most famous brands among boatbuilders, and today the 59-year-old company builds a wide variety of high-end powerboats from 11 to 42 feet — all geared toward either fishing or cruising. They hit on a sweet spot with the versatile 270 Dauntless, a center-console built for offshore fishing or family lounging. Wraparound bow seating with forward-facing flip-up backrests port and starboard along with a forward console seat create a comfortable setting for dining or chatting for at least five. The cockpit includes a leaning post with rod holders, a cooler, and optional livewell or three-drawer storage, plus optional integrated hardtop. An aft bench seat adds to the comfort. A key option is a swim platform that folds down to provide easy access from the port side. bostonwhaler.com

24 Resorter

Century Boats 24 Resorter

In the era of wooden recreational boats, Century Boats is well known for its Resorter line of comfortable runabouts. The boatbuilder is reviving the name with a modern, versatile dual-console boat that can handle offshore fishing trips, day cruising excursions, and full-throttle watersports. The dual-console design allows for a large bow seating area with foldable armrests for lounging, an optional removable table, beach-boarding ladder, and a step-in console head. A standard Raymarine eSeries HybridTouch multifunctional display that connects boat functions through digital switching anchors the helm. A pedestal captain's seat spins 180 degrees for rear views. The pedestal port seat also spins and folds out to a lounge seat. Fold-up bench seating is located aft by the aerated baitwell. Rod boxes and holders, a tackle box, and raw-water wash down add to the boat's fishability. Options include a fiberglass hard top with rod holders and a ski tow pole. centuryboats.com

Pursuit DC 265

Pursuit DC-265

Length: 25'10" | Beam: 8'9" | Weight: 5,650 lbs. | Max Persons: 8 | Max HP: 400 | Fuel: 139 gal | MSRP: $143,410 (with Yamaha F350)

Pursuit Boats has made a name for itself building both fishing and cruising boats. The company designed its 26-foot dual-console from the ground up to serve both purposes — a marine SUV of sorts. Two lounge seats with padded backrests and a full bolster forward are to port and starboard, and a nonskid step-up and windshield with walk-through center panel provides access to the forward bow. Seating in the cockpit is plentiful with two folding aft seats — a stern seat bench with self-raising backrest bolster that faces forward, and a port-side fold-out seat with padded gunwale backrest. Fishing is done in the spacious open cockpit, which features integrated rod holders and padded coaming bolsters. A starboard transom door includes a telescoping swim ladder and transom grab rails. pursuitboats.com

The new Sailfish 236CC is a well-appointed, trailerable center-console designed for both inshore and offshore running on the builder's patented variable degree stepped hull (VDS) for efficiency and stability. An expansive hardtop frame integrated into the console leaves more open deck space. An oversize cushioned leaning post folds open for built-in storage or a second livewell, along with two 120-quart bow fishboxes, a 30-gallon built-in transom baitwell, a built-in 27-quart forward-facing console-seat cooler, and large in-floor bow storage. Wraparound bow seating, fold-up aft seating, a deep step-down head, a telescoping ski pole, and a swim platform with integrated ladder add to the family-friendly features. The ergonomic console with fold-up footrest was designed to accommodate today's larger electronics. The Sailfish 236CC is powered by a single 200- to 300-hp Yamaha or Mercury. sailfishboats.com

The Top 10 Sport Fisher Yachts Available Today

For centuries, people have built and used boats made just for the purpose of fishing. While at first a necessity, these days recreational fishing boats are used by people all over the world. The most well equipped boats are sport fisher yachts, which are perfect for angling in comfort. Models called convertibles are equally designed for optimal cruising and use by sportsmen.  When you’re done fishing for the day, you don’t have to leave your vessel so quickly.  These boats are equipped with luxurious cabins and ample room.

Here are our picks for ten of the finest sport fisher yachts that you can buy.

1. Viking 55 Convertible – $2,291,000

Th first iteration of the Viking 55 Convertible debuted in 1996, and today the sport fisher’s performance is better than ever. The 17.2 meter vessel reaches a top speed of over 40 knots and has a fly bridge and cockpit that were designed to be efficient enough to be suitable for competitive fishing. Built-in conveniences include a split level cockpit with an observation mezzanine and a center console station.

Aesthetically, the Viking 55 Convertible’s exterior is sleek and sporty with a modern edge. Inside it has three staterooms, a laundry area, and a semi-custom configuration that allows its owner to choose between a peninsula or island galley with an under the counter refrigerator.

2. Jarrett Bay 46′ Grander – $1.675 million

For the sea goer or sportsman who wants a custom sport fisher yacht, few options top the Jarrett Bay 46′ Grander. This 46 foot yacht has Twin Cat engines that allow it to read a cruising speed of 39 knots and a top speed of 45 knots. The cockpit measures a roomy 122 square feet and features a central mezzanine seat that contains a cooler and an ice maker. Just steps below it are two easily accessible freezers and in-deck fish boxes, all arranged for maximum space and efficiency.

The Jarrett Bay 46′ Grander has a primary helm with pilot and co-pilot chairs and a state of the art electronics suite, convertible bench that doubles as rod storage, and dry storage. The interior sports a contemporary mix of wood veneer and metallic hued fabrics. There’s also a fully equipped compact galley with a fridge and freezer, microwave and convection oven, and wash basin, plus plenty of rod storage, a tackle storage station, and a wet hanging locker.

3. Cabo 44 HTX -$949,000

The Cabo 44 HTX is built to be tough on the water and reaches a top speed of 38 knots, thanks to its twin 1,001 hp CAT engines. This vessel has plenty of power, but it’s also very stable and won’t knock you off your feet. A three hatch cockpit, with one in the lazarette and two located above the boat’s fish boxes, are well designed and laid out thoughtfully. The cold plates on the Cabo 44 HTX are especially notable — you won’t have any problem keeping your catch chilled for hours even without ice.

Space for a mate is provided by a fighting chair on the deck, and the mezzanine can seat up to five passengers. The bait freezer, transom livewell, tackle locker, and washdown on this sport fisher all make it even more functional and excellent for serious anglers.

4. Bertram 54 Convertible – $399,000

The Bertram 54 Convertible is one of the most reputable sport fisher yachts on the market. The 18 foot 2 inch beam on this yacht makes the cockpit even more appealing for sportsmen, as it’s much more comfortable than other boats in its class. Owners have the option of outfitting the cockpit with an extra freezer or a bait center.

This boat has a forward galley with a layout that’s highly workable and outfitted with competitive anglers in mind. There’s a variety of optional equipment that you can choose, including an Eskimo ice maker, Aquamatic 700-1, and zero speed stabilizer.

5. Maritimo 470 Offshore -$1,198,111

One look at the Maritimo 470 Offshore and you may think it has a modest exterior, but this is one serious sport fisher yacht. The 54 foot vessel is all about practicality and quality, and it effortlessly combines all of the essentials for competitive angling with the right mix of amenities for entertaining. The entertainment area aboard the Maritimo 470 Offshore is continuous and makes efficient use of space.

This vessel has one double room and a single room for sleeping quarters, and in the flybridge is a compact saloon and control station. The boat’s interior layout is versatile, as you can switch between indoor and outdoor cooking and dining. A bar fridge, wash basin, and balcony overlook the cockpit.

6. Spencer 70 IPS – $1.5 million

One of the most fuel efficient sport fisher yachts that you can buy is the Spencer 70 IPS. It has three engines that give it 2,700 hp, and this boat isn’t just fast but quite a looker inside and out. The Spencer 70 IPS is one of the larger vessels in its class, and comes in at 70 feet. Multiple refrigerators, storage, and a grill are on the mezzanine, and the flybridge sports a decor that’s decidedly modern.

7. Tiara 4300 Open – $907,990

Tiara Yachts’ 4300 Open is designed to be an excellent vessel for fishing or cruising. Onboard is premium equipment and twin Cummins diesel engines that provide powerful performance. The upper and lower cockpits are strategically laid out for comfort and practicality. In the upper cockpit is an oversized actuated helm seat, storage, a companion lounge swivel seat, and mezzanine lounge seat. The lower cockpit holds two insulated fish boxes that are flush to the floor, a transom baitwell, and the option to add in extras such as a swim platform or sun pad.

8. Riviera 51 – $850,000

This Riviera sport fisher yacht features a modern appearance inside and out. The Riviera 51 has an enclosed flybridge with an internal staircase, wrap around windows, and three windscreen wipers. It’s smartly designed and features reverse cycle air conditioning for efficiency and maximum comfort in any weather. It’s a great cruiser, but the pod powered vessel is primed for angling as well.

9. Huckins 45 Sportfisherman – Price Upon Request

One of the more classic looking sport fisher yachts at sea these days is the Huckins 45 Sportfisherman. It does have a timeless aesthetic, but it’s engineered with modern technology to make it speedy, powerful, and a pleasure to bring out on the water. It reaches speeds of over 30 knots and is plenty spacious inside.

10. Viking 92 Convertible – $7.36 million

If you prefer to chase big fish or test your skills at tournament, the Viking 92 is one of the best sport fisher yachts that you can use. The 93 foot yacht proves that a bigger vessel can still pack plenty of speed and efficiency. Inside the Viking 92 is a host of lavish details and amenities, an L-shaped galley, and features that are perfect for entertaining once you’re done angling for the day.

Long range yacht

Interested in purchasing a Long Range Yacht? Send us a message below and we will help you with the process.

Long cruises through uncharted territory are this yacht type's specialty. A yacht built to this style is meant to tackle everything from the icy waters of the Arctic to the rough waves of the South Pacific in monsoon season. Sturdy and constructed with a reinforced steel hull in most designs, this style of yacht is perfect for a family of explorers looking for their next adventure.

The curved bottom displacement hull gives you sleeping and cooking areas that are as large as any you would find in your home. Long range cruisers don't need much engine power to get moving, so smaller motors and less fuel is required which can extend your sea faring trip.

Often called semi-displacement vessels, long range cruisers aren't known for their speed. Yet due to their hull design, they are known for being fuel efficient per nautical mile. Designed for longer trips, trawlers are the ultimate cruising vessel, whether you are out at the open sea or a lake.

Nestled in the Gulf of Mexico, St. George Island is a hidden gem known for its undeveloped, pet-friendly beaches and uncrowded environment. If you’re seeking an island escape without the typical tourism popular in other parts of Florida, St. George Island offers a variety of boating spots and beautiful beaches that cater to different interests, activities, and skill levels. Plus, access to Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico make this the perfect Panhandle getaway to explore by boat.

To help you immerse in the beach town charm and navigate your way through an unforgettable visit, we’ve created a quick St. George Island boating guide .

Boating near St. George Island

Apalachicola Bay

Apalachicola Bay

Apalachicola Bay separates St. George Island from the mainland and is renowned for its rich estuarine ecosystem. Large and shallow, the bay is a haven for inshore fishing , kayaking, and bird-watching.

Explore boat rentals around Apalachicola

Sikes Cut is a man-made pass between St. George Island and Little St. George Island, connecting Apalachicola Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The cut is a popular fishing spot because of its rich marine life and access to deeper waters. Anglers typically target redfish, trout, and flounder at this spot.

St. George Sound

On the north side of the island, you’ll find the St. George Sound. The calm, protected environment makes these waters ideal for sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. This spot also offers access to Dog Island and nearby smaller islands and sandbars.

Best beaches on St. George Island

St. George Island State Park

Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park and East End Beach

Located at the east end of St. George Island, St. George Island State Park and East End Beach feature nine miles of undeveloped beaches, dunes, and salt marshes. Enjoy activities like swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and stargazing . Things to do near St. George Island

Cape St. George Lighthouse

When you want a break from boating and water fun, St. George Island offers a variety of local attractions and activities.

  • Visit the historic Cape St. George Lighthouse where you can take in panoramic views of the Gulf.
  • Enjoy local seafood and tropical cocktails at the Blue Parrot Ocean Front Cafe .
  • Rent a bike and pedal your way around St. George Island. There are paved paths, sandy backroads, and forest trails. We recommend trying the St. George Island Bike Path, a 6-mile trail that runs parallel to Gulf Beach Drive, boasting ocean views and access to local attractions.

St. George Island Boating Rules

Boating around St. George Island requires strict adherence to speed limits and designated no- wake zones. These regulations are in place to protect the island’s delicate ecosystems and prevent shoreline erosion. Pay special attention to manatee zones, where you’ll have to reduce your speed to avoid harming these endangered animals.

Additionally, St. George Island enforces a “Leave No Trace” policy to protect its beaches and marine life, including loggerhead sea turtles that nest along its shores. During nesting season, reducing boat speeds and avoiding disturbances near nesting areas are crucial to aiding in the survival of the turtles.

St. George Island: A Boater’s Quiet Escape

Whether you’re setting out on a fishing adventure, paddling through the calm waters of Apalachicola Bay, or simply enjoying a quiet beach day, St. George Island’s natural charm and tranquility provide the perfect setting for an unforgettable vacation.

Major League Fishing Announces Sonar Limits

  • September 13, 2024

Bow-mounted screen

Major League Fishing announced Friday updates to its 2025 rules that will allow tournament anglers to utilize the fish-catching power of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar technology while preserving traditional fishing techniques enjoyed by millions of anglers and fans.

Starting in 2025, all boats, across all MLF circuits, will be limited to two forward-facing or 360-degree sonar transducers in any combination. Additionally, no bow-mounted screen may extend vertically more than 18 inches off the surface of the front deck at its highest point when the boat is on plane, and no screen mounted at the console may extend vertically more than 16 inches off the top of the steering column where it protrudes from the console.

Read Next: See the B.A.S.S Sonar Rules

Pros competing on the 2025 Bass Pro Tour will be allowed to use forward-facing and 360-degree sonar for only one of three periods each day. Anglers will declare their use of the technologies before the start of the period of their choice, and fans watching on MLFNOW! will see an indicator on SCORETRACKER® next to each angler’s name showing who is actively using the technologies, has used them or still has them available. This rule applies to all seven regular-season Bass Pro Tour stages and REDCREST 2025. There will be no restrictions in the General Tire Heavy Hitters or General Tire Team Series, where anglers compete out of similarly equipped, league-provided boats that level the playing field. Use of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar will be permitted during practice.

the Tackle Warehouse Invitationals, qualifying days will be evenly split with forward-facing and 360-degree sonar allowed on Day 1 and prohibited on Day 2. Anglers who advance to the Championship Round will be allowed to use the technologies on Day 3. Forward-facing and 360-degree transducers must be covered with a high-visibility cap provided by MLF that prohibits sonar transmission during times when use is not allowed. No restrictions will apply to practice.

Toyota Series, Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) and Abu Garcia College Fishing anglers will be allowed to use forward-facing and 360-degree sonar during practice and all competition days.

In order to create a more level playing field for up-and-coming student anglers and reinforce the learning of traditional bass-fishing techniques, use of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar will not be allowed in Abu Garcia High School Fishing competition. Its use will not, however, be restricted during practice.

“Forward-facing sonar is the most effective bass-fishing technology that I’ve seen introduced in my lifetime,” said Boyd Duckett, President and CEO of Major League Fishing. “It’s a powerful tool that provides an opportunity to access and catch fish that we’ve never been able to efficiently target before. However, its effectiveness is leading to a more uniform approach in tournaments. For the sport to remain engaging to fans, participants or sponsors, it’s important that anglers can still compete using a diverse range of techniques.”

MLF research shows that television and livestream viewers prefer watching tournaments where a variety of techniques are in play. Additionally, surveys of Tackle Warehouse Invitationals, Toyota Series and Phoenix Bass Fishing League anglers, both those who fished in 2024 and those who fished in 2023 but did not fish in 2024, show that a substantial majority, across all levels and divisions, support limiting screen size and transducers to rein in the technology. Anglers were evenly split, however, when asked if the technology should be banned or allowed to continue unrestricted. A slight majority of boaters preferred unrestricted use while co-anglers preferred an outright ban.

“We have numerous audiences that we’re trying to please, and while we realize that not everyone is going to agree with our rule changes, we believe the solutions we have created will satisfy the majority of our stakeholders,” Duckett said. “We did our due diligence from analyzing viewership trends and consulting with sponsors to surveying our anglers, who account for the sport’s largest participation base, and we believe we’ve reached the best possible solution to a polarizing issue – a compromise that merges this powerful technology with traditional bass fishing. Going forward, it will add to our game, not materially change it.”

MLF is uniquely situated to govern intra-day usage of forward-facing and 360-degree sonar at the sport’s highest level with its period structure and an official in every Bass Pro Tour boat. The league is also positioned to enforce day-by-day usage at the Tackle Warehouse Invitationals through POV cameras and a new, easy to install transducer cover under development that will temporarily prohibit sonar transmission. Covers will be provided to participating anglers at no charge.

“We’re setting a path, just like every other professional sports league, that allows us to manage and appropriately incorporate technological advancements as they’re created,” Duckett said. “We want to ensure that our sport remains multi-dimensional so that we can continue delivering the best possible product for our fans, anglers and sponsors.”

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5’s trailer has finally arrived, and with Captain Glenn Shephard’s crew including First Officer Gary King, fans are disappointed in the show’s return . While Below Deck viewers have been impatiently awaiting news about Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 for over a year, the trailer has finally been released, and has many concerned about what the season is going to look like. While the trailer reveals the return of some familiar faces, the storylines that appear to be part of the season left viewers feeling uneasy. After Gary’s sexual misconduct allegations, his involvement seems overwhelming.

In the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer, the crew’s chartering guests around Ibiza in a new sailing adventure. With Gary showing up early in the trailer after Daisy Kelliher makes her grand entrance, things get dicey quickly. “That’s right, we have a f****** job and I’m not carrying this f****** season on my own you f****** prick,” Daisy shouts at Gary in one moment of the trailer as he lays in his bed, looking dismayed. The rest of the trailer shows the genuine chaos of the season, featuring Gary heavily much to the surprise of Below Deck viewers .

What Gary’s Involvement In Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Means

He’s part of the show more than ever.

Throughout the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer, it was clear that Gary will be a focal point of the exterior team’s story. Being shown on the deck with some of the exterior team, pushing Deckhands to their limits and critiquing their work, Gary’s presence on the sailing yacht may be odd during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 . While he appears to be getting along with Daisy , he may not even have her in his corner by the end of the charter season. His heavy involvement in the trailer may not indicate the same throughout the whole season.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Although Gary has been a part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht since the early days of the series, seeing him as a member of the crew after his sexual misconduct allegations came to light is tough. While Bravo filmed Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 before the allegations were revealed, they came to light during the filming of the season and it appears that the network didn’t choose to remove Gary from later episodes or take action at all. Though it remains to be seen if production did anything about Gary , it’s disappointing to some to see him on screen.

Our Take On The Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Trailer

It could be chaotic fun, but gary leaves a stain on the show.

Although the trailer for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 makes it seem like one of the most exciting, dramatic seasons of the series we’ve ever seen, the mess may not be worth it if Gary’s involved. By ignoring the sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Gary and leaving him on the series, seemingly without explanation, Bravo is allowing it to seem like what he may have done is okay. Though nothing has been proven, taking no action on Below Deck Sailing Yacht could be a misstep that may taint the entire season of the sailing spin-off for once excited viewers.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

For Dreamy Vacations and Plant-Based Fine Dining, All Aboard Windstar’s Luxury Yacht Cruises

Is it time you take a new type of cruise if you love cruises but not crowds—and top-quality food but not buffet lines—you might want to consider a smaller cruise company like windstar cruises. .

by Charlotte Pointing

September 16, 2024

Imagine just for one moment that you’re not busy with work, school, or household chores. You’re not stressed. You’re not tired. In fact, the only thing you have to worry about is when you have to leave the white sands of Bora Bora or Tahiti to head back to your yacht for a delicious plant-based meal crafted by some of the world’s best chefs. It may feel like a faraway dream, but it’s very much a possibility.

In February 2025, Windstar Cruises is launching Dreams of Tahiti, its inaugural plant-based cruise to French Polynesia. The voyage will take place on Star Breeze, a newly renovated all-suite motor yacht with room for 312 guests, meaning it’s small enough to fit into the tiny island ports of Polynesian destinations like Raiatea and Motu Mahaea, but big enough for a spa, pool, and some seriously impressive dining venues—all of which serve delicious, totally plant-based food crafted by globally renowned chefs (fun fact: Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation).

If you want to get a spot, you’ll have to move fast, because the voyage is almost sold out. According to Jessica Chiang, Windstar’s director of marketing, the all-vegan sailing trip was launched in response to rising demand from passengers.

It’s true that plant-based diets are growing in popularity in the US. One study published earlier this year in the journal Nutrients noted that from 2012 to 2022, the percentage of Americans following a plant-forward diet more than doubled from 12 percent to 26 percent. Documentaries that demonstrate the health benefits of a plant-based lifestyle—such as  Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones and You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment— have also been popular with Netflix viewers in recent years.

This demand has spilled over into the cruising industry, which is more popular than ever ( research suggests that by the end of this year, 36 million passengers will have taken to the high seas on a cruise ship). In 2023, Carnival Cruises announced it launched a brand-new vegan menu on all of its ships. And in the same year, Princess Cruises and Virgin Atlantic launched new plant-based options aboard their cruise liners as well.

But if you’ve been curious about trying plant-based food on vacation, there is arguably no better opportunity than Windstar’s intimate Dreams of Tahiti voyage.

Windstar: a more intimate, more refined cruising experience

The average cruise ship can hold around 3,000 passengers at any one time. That means that if you’re heading off on a cruise during the height of the season, you’ll be tussling for a good seat on deck, lining up to get off the ship to see all of the wonders at your port destination, and battling for the last few vegan options at the buffet.

The world’s biggest ships are basically floating resorts, which is great for some, but not so appealing to those looking for a more refined and tranquil vacation experience with plenty of space and opportunity to try new experiences, including food.

“Because we only serve up to 350 guests, we can source the produce locally with the freshest ingredients from trusted purveyors we work with frequently. We try to localize as much as possible.” —Jessica Chiang

This means that your meals will be packed with flavor, of course, but also that they’re better for the planet—sourcing food locally from port stops along the journey reduces any extra emissions from shipping it in from external food service providers.

Research shows that intimate vessels like those from Windstar Cruises have a significantly smaller environmental impact than larger cruise ships. According to Marine Insight , a 3,000-capacity cruise ship can generate around 150,000 gallons of sewage and graywater—that’s enough to fill 10 swimming pools. Carnival, which operates several cruise brands with large ships including Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, generates around 1.3 pounds of food waste per person per day on average. Windstar, on the other hand, operates with around 10 percent of the passengers of large vessels.

Inside Windstar Cruises’ dreamy plant-based menu

Even if you miss out on the dreamy plant-based voyage to Tahiti, there are plenty of other vegan-friendly voyages with Windstar to choose from. In fact, the cruise line is renowned for the vegan-friendly dining experiences on all of its yachts, from the Wind Surf yacht, which is fitted with 171 staterooms, to its smallest yachts, like the Wind Spirit, which has just 74 staterooms on board.

Aside from smaller crowds, the size of the yachts is important: it means that Windstar can take you to places that other, larger cruise ships can’t (some of its most popular voyages include Tahiti and the Tuamotu Islands, Iceland’s fjords, and Niue in the South Pacific), but also that the crew can always offer an intimate, personal experience. They’ll get to know you and your dietary requirements, Chiang promises, and strive to make sure you have the very best plant-based options at every meal.

A few examples of some of the vegan options you can expect to be treated to include citrus pumpkin risotto, vegetable enchiladas, and eggplant cannelloni, and on Star Class ships like Star Pride and Star Breeze, there is also plant-based Korean bulgogi.

For breakfast, you can choose from options like fresh fruit smoothies, oatmeal, and muffins, all of which you can order straight to your room for maximum comfort (date pancakes are also available on special request). If you’re craving something sweet, expect to come across options like mango lime tart, chia seed truffles served with coconut sauce, and tahini brownies with fresh strawberries for dessert.

If you’re traveling with a group, it’s important to note that vegan options aren’t just for those who eat a plant-based diet. Chiang notes that many guests who are simply trying to eat healthier options have tried them and been suitably impressed.

“So far the feedback on our plant-based options has been positive. There are quite a few guests who are interested in trying to eat healthier, but often have a misconception that healthy foods are not flavorful or tasty,” she explained. “Our guest feedback is very important to us, as it helps us improve and innovate our menus.”

In Paris, a Riverboat Sojourn on the Banks of the Seine

For a week, the novelist Joyce Maynard said good night to Paris from the deck of a péniche, within full view of the Eiffel Tower. Who cared if it rained the whole time?

An illustration shows a scene on the Seine River in Paris. Boats are moored along the banks, and a woman stands on the deck of one, her back to the viewer, as she looks out over the scene before her: a narrow stone bridge, trees, stately buildings, the river itself, and in the distance, the Eiffel Tower rising up beneath a sky with billowing gray clouds.

By Joyce Maynard

There’s something about sleeping on a boat. It’s the rocking, of course, and the sound of the water. It’s also the cocoon effect of containment in a small space tucked away from the world. I’m not talking about cruise ships and luxury yachts here. I’m talking about a vessel that gently rocks, just enough to let a person know she’s not on dry land. If you suffer from seasickness, this could be an issue. As for me, I never sleep better than I do on a boat.

Now imagine this boat is docked in Paris. You wake up to a view straight out of a French movie from the 1950s and finish your day under a full moon.

In June I got to experience that (all but the full moon, but more on that later).

My fixation was not a recent one. I’d been eyeing boats — specifically péniches, riverboats used originally for commercial purposes — for more than 30 years, as long as I’d been visiting Paris. Then, at a party in Paris last fall, my last night in the city before heading home to the United States, I met a Dutch couple — Jan and Lydia — who invited me to their péniche for a drink.

Docked along the Right Bank — midway between the Pont de la Concorde and the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor — my new friends’ péniche sat in the middle of my favorite city, but in a world of its own, away from traffic and crowds. As perfect a combination as I could dream up.

The evening was warm. We sat on the deck as Jan set out wine glasses and a bottle of Champagne. Across the water, the Eiffel Tower sparkled.

“If you ever hear of someone who might like to rent their péniche for a week or two,” I said, “let me know.”

A pleasant level of funkiness

It turns out that you can, in fact, book a Parisian péniche on Airbnb and Vrbo (prices range from under $100 a night for houseboats a few miles outside Paris, in locations like Neuilly-sur-Seine, to $500 a night or more for a luxury péniche in central Paris), as well as through various rental agencies in the city, including Paris Attitude and Bookahouseboat.com . But before I had time to research these, my new friends made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

“When you come back you can stay with us,” Jan said.

In June I returned to Paris. In the months since that fall evening on Jan and Lydia’s boat, I’d had plenty of opportunities to imagine the scenes of warm nights on the deck, Champagne in hand.

But on this June day, it was raining hard when I arrived, the wind whipping off the water.

My Uber dropped me off on the busy thoroughfare directly above the quay where Jan and Lydia’s péniche was moored, which required me to haul my suitcase down a set of steps to the water. A small price to pay.

The péniche was one of a dozen or so lining the riverbank — most roughly the same size, a little over 100 feet, some appointed with cafe seating and planters, children’s playthings (deck space sufficiently open to allow for a tricycle or two), pergolas, and in one case, an amphibious car.

But though a few of the boats appeared to have been elaborately renovated, most conveyed a pleasant level of funkiness.

Watch your footing

My dream of staying on a péniche is not one shared with everyone who visits Paris, or lives there. Even though it costs less to live on a péniche than it would to occupy a space of comparable square footage in one of the better arrondissements in Paris, many Parisians view the vessels as more trouble than they’re worth. And it’s true: All that character and romance requires a certain level of open-mindedness, possession of a baseline level of handy skills, a willingness to come face to face with the elements and sufficient agility that navigating the deck on a windy day won’t put you off.

In most areas where péniche s are docked (including my hosts’), they’re lined up in rows two boats deep, which means that to step onto the vessel on the outside edge, a person has to walk across the deck of the boat pulled up alongside the quay, and then it’s a quick hop across a wooden platform. If you don’t feel like taking a dip in the Seine, it’s a good idea to watch one’s footing. For me, all of that was part of the adventure.

A person unfamiliar with péniche life might imagine small, cramped spaces inside, but the boat belonging to my Dutch friends felt nearly as expansive as a New York City loft — with a kitchen large enough to accommodate a couple of cooks at once, extending out to a dining and living room area, bedrooms at either end, two bathrooms and an area where a captain might sit, if the boat were actually traversing the river, as this one no longer did.

In the old days, when péniches and barges were used to transport goods up and down the river, smaller boats often pulled them — or animals did from the riverbanks. These days, most péniches stay docked, though sometimes their owners haul them away in the off-season for repairs.

A different aspect

In addition to the built-in bed, my room housed a drum set and a couple of guitars (owing to my friends’ participation in a rock band), along with a desk. From the bed, I could look out across the water to the Assemblée Nationale and a row of other buildings along the Left Bank. But the best view was from above.

We’re speaking of the deck, the most important element of a péniche experience. Some péniche owners cultivate elaborate gardens — lemon trees, roses, planters of vegetables — but the main attraction of a péniche deck is how it opens up onto the city’s skyline. Over my many trips to Paris, I’d never beheld what I did from the deck of that boat: an utterly unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower.

The morning after my arrival, I woke to rain, and drank my coffee from the enclosure of the small captain’s cabin. Next morning, more rain. I ventured out anyway, crossing one of the many bridges spanning the Seine for croissants and a baguette.

Back on the boat, there was a little gas stove in the living room. My hosts and I turned it on.

As things worked out, the rain held for the entire week of my stay. But once I let go of my romantic dream of clear and balmy evenings looking out over the water, I was able to embrace a different picture of my time on the péniche. As much as my little cocoon bed sheltered me from the weather, something compelled me to venture out on the deck every night, even when the rain was pelting down its hardest, and the water was dark and choppy. This, too, was Paris. Just a different aspect.

I made it my tradition every evening of my stay to close out each day on the boat by looking out to the Eiffel Tower — one rare constant in this turbulent and shifting world.

One night the fog was so thick it even obscured the lights from the tower, but I could still make out its presence, along with that of the last bateau mouche (each one named for a French movie star from times gone by) transporting passengers from one end of the city to the other.

Bundled up in my friend’s rain jacket, I considered what a gift it was that I could stand under the night sky, rather than staring up at a hotel room ceiling. Somewhere up there, under the clouds, there were stars.

Joyce Maynard’s newest novel, “How the Light Gets In,” was published this summer.
