S/Y TERRASAVIA is very easy short-handed to sail. She is a stylish yacht with a dark blue hull, white mast and black Monolithic Carbon sails by Millennium. TERRASAVIA has a beautiful appointed teak interior and leather upholstery.

This Solaris 60 is fully equipped for long cruising, long autonomy thanks to a water-maker, big water and diesel tanks, a 8 KW generator, a high-capacity AGM 800 Ah service batteries for 2 day sailing and living without charging.

S/Y TERRASAVIA is also an ideal yacht for exclusive and relaxing day cruising. She has a great bathing platform, a powerful 8hp dingy, a lots of space, some additional mattresses for sun bathing, a washing machine etc. She also features a state of the art entertainment system and internet connection for all guests.

In 2020 the Solaris 60 will be launched. This model will mark the way of building and conceiving the boat and it will influence the nautical design for the next ten years. Solaris 60 is inspired by the idea of creating a Mini-Maxi, a high performance sailboat, with an overall length of 18.31 m. This length allows to take part in offshore racings, in Mini-Maxi class, including the main event in Porto Cervo that take place every year. The main innovation of the Solaris 60 is the cockpit because of its full width steering wheels. You can steer the boat without the intrusion of the sprayhood. This ensure that the jib’s luff is always completely left in sight while sailing. The width of the steering system allows to lower the lifelines in the aft area and to lift them near the two steps that lead to the side decks. This solution is normally adopted on very big boats, bigger than 140 ft. Moreover, thanks to the width of the wheels even during manoeuvring and navigation, the helmsman will have an unobstructed view without any kind of obstacle. Behind the wheels several seat options are available to steer in different sea conditions, even sitting down. Below deck you will find a typical Solaris layout which includes a galley slightly hidden by two steps forward and for the first time two aft cabins with single or double beds, with a wide porthole facing the interior of the cockpit. The owner’s cabin, situated in the front, is extremely wide and equipped with a wide capacity and with the option of outboard or central bed. Special focus to the crew cabin too, situated in the bow, equipped with a separate bathroom. The tender garage, with longitudinal access, has a minimum intrusion into the aft cabins.

As the successor to the CNB 60, which has always sold well, the new ship from CNB has a difficult legacy to take on. To ensure a successful market launch, the shipyard has come up with some very exciting conceptual innovations in collaboration with the designers from Philippe Briand Yacht Design. For example, the developers have built the steering positions very far forwards and covered the cockpit with a targa bar. This not only takes the mainsheet out of the cockpit, but also serves as a base for an extended sprayhood or, as an extension, for a bimini. A hardtop and/or a fixed windscreen should also be possible as an option.

At the rear of the aft deck, there is a large open area for relaxing and sunbathing. The shipyard also has various design options in mind for this. The customer should be free to decide whether they want an additional seating area, a large sun lounger or simply an open space on the aft deck. Because the helm stations are mounted far forward, the sheets and lines are led back to the two large winches on the aft deck, where there is plenty of space for good, clear handling. The CNB 62 should also be easy to sail by a pair of owners, even without the help of a professional skipper.

The unusual design on deck is reminiscent of the creative and innovative layout of the Jeanneau Yachts 55 (test YACHT 12/2023), also a design from the studio of Philippe Briand Yacht Design. A dinghy three metres long can be stored in the stern between the two rudder shafts in the direction of travel. The dinghy can be launched and retrieved effortlessly thanks to a winch.

Three cabins and three bathrooms with shower

The interior design as a true deck saloon yacht provides for three very spacious double cabins, each with its own bathroom and shower. As in the predecessor model CNB 60, the galley of the new ship is also positioned at the front of the main bulkhead in a very generous arrangement. The layout aft is also exciting: the companionway is offset to starboard. This opens up the possibility of a passageway to the aft ship on the port side with separate entrances to the large aft cabins. Like all CNB yachts, the new 62 is built from A to Z at the new Solaris Yachts production facility in Aquileia, northern Italy. The hull and deck are made as GRP sandwich constructions with a foam core using the vacuum infusion process. The CNB 62 has been announced as a world premiere for the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf in 2025. The shipyard has also already announced a price: the ship will cost 1,846,880 euros, gross including 19% VAT

This length allows a vessel to take part in offshore racing, in Mini-Maxi class, including the main event in Porto Cervo that takes place every year.

The main innovation of the Solaris 60 is the cockpit because of its full width steering wheels. You can steer the boat without the intrusion of the sprayhood. This ensure that the jib’s luff is always completely left in sight while sailing.

The width of the steering system allows to lower the lifelines in the aft area and to lift them near the two steps that lead to the side decks. This solution is normally adopted on very big boats, bigger than 140ft. Moreover, thanks to the width of the wheels even during manoeuvring and navigation, the helmsman will have an unobstructed view without any kind of obstacle.

The control lines are located within easy reach of the helm and the signature self-tacking jib makes her easily handled with a small crew. Behind the wheels several seat options are available to steer in different sea conditions, even sitting down.

Below deck, you will find a typical Solaris Yachts layout, which includes a galley slightly hidden by two steps forward and for the first time two aft cabins with single or double beds, with a wide porthole facing the interior of the cockpit.

The owner’s cabin, situated in the front, is extremely wide and equipped with a wide capacity and with the option of outboard or central bed.

There is also a large hydraulically operated tender garage with a wide transom door enabling the easy deployment of the dinghy while the transom also serves as an ample swim platform.

Special focus has been given to the crew cabin too, situated in the bow, equipped with a separate bathroom.

Again, with a choice of interior finishes – light oak, teak, washed and antiqued oak, the craftsmanship, attention to detail and quality throughout is as you would expect from Solaris Yachts.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Targeting super yachts owned by Russian oligarchs could hit a nerve in Moscow

Poor transparency around ownership of assets can cause challenges, experts say.

With sanctions levied and financial assets seized, Russian oligarchs have been scrambling to get their super yachts out of Western ports in search of safer harbours. 

One yacht, said to belong to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, abruptly left port in Hamburg, Germany, just weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine prompted wide-reaching sanctions. Others were not so quick to leave European ports. 

Authorities in La Ciotat, on France's Mediterranean coast, seized a yacht they say is linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Igor Sechin, the CEO of state oil company Rosneft. He was Russia's deputy prime minister from 2008 to 2012.

Industry watchers say oligarchs everywhere are trying to keep their yachts from being taken.

​​"There's a few yachts that we are watching at the moment in the Atlantic," said Sam Tucker, head of super yachts at the firm VesselsValue, which tracks and estimates the value of these giant luxury yachts. 

"I'm expecting some of them to start doing U-turns in the middle of the ocean," he told CBC Radio's Day 6 .

Western countries have imposed a punishing package of sanctions and export control restrictions on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia's biggest banks were hit, as was the country's central bank. Major state-owned companies and some of the country's wealthiest individuals have seen overseas assets frozen.

The investment bank JP Morgan Chase believes Russia's economy will shrink 35 per cent in the second quarter of 2022 and seven per cent for the entire year.

White House spokesperson Jen Psaki says the suite of sanctions is meant to make every aspect of life difficult on Putin and the oligarchs who protect him.

"What we're talking about here is seizing their assets, seizing their yachts and making it harder for them to send their children to go to colleges and universities in the West," Psaki said in a briefing this week. "These are significant steps that will impact the people who are closely around President Putin."

Symbolic target

The yachts themselves are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but experts in Russian sanctions say this isn't just about the dollar value.

"They don't have much value compared to the total net worth of an oligarch," said Bill Browder, a long-time advocate for stiff sanctions against Russian oligarchs, in an email to CBC Radio. 

But they are "a highly symbolic attack on something coveted by the oligarchs."

These ultra-luxurious ships became a status symbol for the oligarchs as they amassed fortunes in the 1990s and early 2000s.

"There is a bit of oneupmanship," Tucker told Day 6 . He says the biggest and most expensive ships are cloaked in secrecy. They have extreme privacy and security features, including bulletproof glass, and some require crew to sign non-disclosure agreements.

But Tucker says the biggest security and privacy feature of all is the opaque ownership structure of the yachts. He says precious little information about who actually owns these ships is available.

"[Only] basic information is disclosed — for example, the registered owner — which is often a shell company or a 'special interest vehicle' registered in Monaco, Malta, [or the] Cayman Islands," he said.

Untying those knots is a notorious problem, but one usually confined to taxation issues.

"One thing that I think may come out of this whole situation is the increased call for transparency and transparent ownership," said Tucker.

Yachts on the move

So far, only four super yachts have been seized, including a 213-foot yacht owned by Alexei Mordashov in Imperia, Italy.

While authorities sift through the byzantine paper trail of ownership, other oligarchs have scrambled their crews to get the yachts to somewhere safe.

"One of the things I've been trying to figure out is, where do they go [next]?" asked Alex Finley, a former CIA officer living in Barcelona, in an interview with  As It Happens host Gillian Findlay .

This week, Finley tweeted photos tracking a ship said to be owned by Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns the Chelsea Football Club.

"A lot of these yachts that we've been looking at are heading towards the Maldives or the Seychelles. A few are in Montenegro, but they look like they're probably going to be on the move," Finley said in the interview .

Neither the Maldives nor the Seychelles signed onto the sanctions, so the ships are probably safe from seizure there. Another major hub is Dubai.

"I think we're going to see Dubai as a big hotspot for these yachts," said Tucker. "It has hot weather all year round and … Russians can fly to Dubai without going through the EU airspace."

Tucker agrees that targeting the yachts is a symbolic move.

"It's really sending the message that they aren't untouchable. We've closed the skies on both sides of the Atlantic so their private jets can't operate, and now we're going after their super yachts," he said.

"I'd be feeling quite vulnerable if I was an oligarch right now."

Questi gli ultimi gioielli a vela portati dall’azienda di Aquileia, Solaris Yachts, al Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 che si è appena concluso in Francia. Una fiera in cui ogni anno si danno appuntamento i principali produttori di yacht e superyacht di tutto il mondo.

Un mercato che globalmente, dice Confindustria Nautica che quest’estate ha presentato lo studio realizzato assieme a Deloitte “The state of the art of the global yachting market, cresce dell’11% e raggiunge i 33 miliardi di euro, 25 solo per i superyachts. E in cui l’Italia è il leader mondiale nella produzione con una quota del 54%. Un trend in espansione soprattutto per la cantieristica nazionale, che con un giro d’affari da oltre 4,4 miliardi di euro registra un più 20% rispetto all’anno precedente.

Ne sa qualcosa l’azienda aquileiese (a poca distanza dal polo nautico di Monfalcone) fondata nel 1974, diventata Gruppo Solaris Yachts, articolato in quattro divisioni differenziate per prodotto e mercato di riferimento: Solaris Yachts, produttore di fast-cruiser da 40 a 80 piedi, CNB Yachts, acquisito nel 2021 e produttore di blue water cruiser da 60 a 90 piedi, Performance Boats, costruttore di maxi yacht a vela ipertecnologici fino a 140 piedi, e Solaris Power, produttore di imbarcazioni a motore open e coupé da 40 a 80 piedi.

Nella sede di Aquileia lavorano circa 180 dipendenti (tra operai e impiegati) e c’è un indotto importante in zona, con diverse aziende terziste che lavorano per Solaris, e impiegano decine di persone come, ad esempio, la falegnameria che realizza i mobili interni e lavora in esclusiva. Solaris Yachts ha realizzato lo scorso anno un fatturato di quasi 50 milioni con una cinquantina di barche consegnate. Quest'anno con circa lo stesso numero di barche in consegna il fatturato si aggirerà sui 55 milioni di euro, anche perché è prevista la consegna di diverse barche di grandi dimensioni (Solaris 74 e CNB 78). Solaris inoltre controlla al 100% anche un’azienda a Forlì che ha raggiunto, nel ’23, 40 milioni di fatturato per quasi 50 barche consegnate. Anche quest'anno c’è lo stesso numero di barche in consegna, ma di maggiori dimensioni, per cui il fatturato salirà a 50 milioni. Il gruppo quindi si avvia per il 2024 ad un fatturato di oltre 100 milioni con un centinaio di barche in consegna.

«C’è grande soddisfazione per questi numeri che per il gruppo sono i più alti di sempre - commenta il presidente, Federico Gambini - è un anno record per il fatturato. Dopo il Covid c’è stato un rimbalzo per tutto il settore e per questo ci sono ora questi risultati. Una situazione eccezionale, adesso ci aspettiamo un fisiologico rallentamento dopo un periodo straordinario. Anche se i segnali positivi non mancano e li abbiamo colti al salone di Cannes dove oltre alla vendita importante di diverse barche abbiamo raccolto nuovi ordini».

Solaris sarà presente in ottobre alla Barcolana di Trieste (la regata più partecipata del mondo) con un evento che segna il culmine delle celebrazioni in onore dei 50 anni del cantiere. Dopo le regate dedicate le imbarcazioni della Barcolana Solaris Adriatic Cup si dirigeranno alle Rive di Trieste per prendere parte alla Coppa d’autunno domenica 13 ottobre.
