The Largest Top 100 Private Luxury Charter Yachts & Superyachts in the World > See the List Below!

The Top 100 Largest & Most Significant Luxury Yacht Charter Superyachts in the World by length, price, size, importance and newness:

There have been many articles written over the years about the 100 biggest superyachts in the world, by a host of authors. I think the first one was written by Power & Motor Yacht years ago. The list changes a little every year. The very large luxury yacht builders such as Lurssen or OceAnco launch another big boat, now and again (the biggest are mostly German or Dutch). For instance, the yachting community was abuzz with the launch of yacht ECLIPSE late last year. That yacht went straight to the top to displace DUBAI at the top (though by how much is not as yet clear). It should be noted that the ‘largest superyachts in the world list’ is intrinsically subjective to an extent. An author can choose tonnage, displacement or LOA (most common) as a measure of a yacht’s size. Then there is also some secrecy as to the actual size of some of the mega yachts.

Anyway, here I’m writing about the biggest charter yachts in the world because it hasn’t been done definitively yet. I think there will be some interest. Keep in mind these are boats that can actually be rented for a holiday in various worldwide locations. They represent the pinnacle of useable or available luxury in the world – I would argue more so than any other coveted luxury holiday in a resort or villa, or anything else for that matter. The benefits a yacht charter vacation offer, over and above other holidays, is well established. I don’t need to get into that here.

Needless to say, these boats are currently chartered by some of the worlds most wealthy, influential and famous people. They are definitely important people, just like the yacht’s owners. The superyachts below have been visited and enjoyed by presidents, prime ministers, movie stars, rock stars, leading entrepreneurs – the movers and shakers of the world. Obviously the people who charter the top 100 luxury yachts cannot be named but rest assured that many of them are stars in their own right, just like the yacht owners.

As with the ‘biggest yachts in the world list’, the ‘largest charter yachts list’ can vary depending on criteria. Accordingly, I’ve decided to use two different concepts for the list.  The first is simply the largest boats by LOA, or length over all. This is a traditional (if not scientifically imprecise) measure of ship size.

The second ingredient will also factor in the other considerations like displacement, or to put it another way the yachts bulk, along with the approximate charter rate or cost to rent the yacht and crew for a week. It will also factor in the newness and buzz factor created by the yacht in question. This second consideration could be termed ‘The Most Expensive Significant & Important Luxury Yacht Charters in the World’.

The price to charter the boats is the high rate before expenses like fuel, berthage and supplies are included (adding another 25 - 35 % depending and the preferences of the charter guests). Price can be subject to change and there are different prices for different seasons, so this is only historically approximate for the purpose of the list.

To recap: because all four measurements, a yacht’s length, size, price and newness are important they are all amalgamated in to create the list of the most important or most significant 100 luxury charter yachts in the world.

And lastly, (I couldn’t resist) I have created the ‘Top 100 luxury superyachts in the world in 2010’ list. This is all yachts, not just charter yachts.

The World’s Most Expensive Yachts for Charter

This year has seen two of the most expensive superyachts in the world join the charter market.

By Owen Fay

The past few years have seen two of the most expensive yachts in the world join the charter market. Lana,   O’Pari and Octopus are now available for hire priced at $2.1m and $1.1m and $2.2m per week, respectively. Freshly launched, these stunning ships add to an already impressive array of superyachts on the charter market right now.

When they were first released, these ships entered an industry that is facing unprecedented challenges, with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic still reverberating. However, as cases began to drop and travel back on the menu, chartered superyachts became the most favorable vacation option to those who could afford it, with privacy and the opportunity for splendid isolation away from crowded airports and resorts both big draws.

Here, we look at the esteemed company that Lana and O’Pari will be joining with some of the most expensive superyachts to charter.

Built by Lürssen and delivered in 2019, Flying Fox (pictured above) is the most significant addition to the charter market in recent times. The weekly charter fee puts her at the most expensive yacht in the world. This means she is in reach of just a select few, with Beyoncé and Jay-Z choosing her for their summer vacation in 2021.

We have covered Flying Fox in greater detail, but in short, this is a one-of-a-kind vessel that offers a truly unique experience. At a hulking 446 ft, space is no issue with the yacht home to two helipads, a two-story spa, a 40-ft swimming pool, which is unique for a yacht of this size, and a full gym and beauty center, among other similarly impressive features.

It is worth drawing special attention towards the vessel’s cryotherapy chamber, as it was the first to ever be installed on a private yacht and can reach -166 Fahrenheit. With 54 expert staff on board, including some former Olympians, Flying Fox is well-equipped to look after up to 36 guests, either in the West Mediterranean in the summer months, or the East Mediterranean for the rest of the year. Whichever option is chosen, this superyacht is the peak luxury experience.

octopus is one of the most expensive yachts to charter

Arguably one of Lurssen’s most iconic yacht builds, despite being first delivered in 2003 Octopus  has only recently come to the charter following a sale. The 414.1-ft ice-class vessel isn’t short on exciting features to shout about, with two helipads, seven tenders, a swimming pool, library and even a glass-bottomed aquarium. Accommodations are suitably luxurious with a lavish master suite and two VIP apartments, as well as seven doubles and three twin rooms.

Octopus  has seen plenty of sights in her lifetime with her first owner, the late Paul Allen, frequently loaning her out for exploration projects and research missions. While her new owner remains undisclosed, it has been noted that they are keen for her to continue being used for meaningful expeditions – as well as the odd cruise around paradise, of course.

most expensive yacht for rent

When she was first delivered in 2020, Lana took the title of Benetti’s largest-ever build at 351 ft and a maximum beam of 50 ft. While she has now been surpassed by the likes of Luminosity and M/Y IJE, she’s still a force to be reckoned with, and the $2.1m weekly fee goes a long way with this much space. Benetti’s Italian craftsmanship is on display in the seven VIP staterooms, along with one master suite. The rooms are able to accommodate 12 guests in these eight cabins, with each room equipped with an individual color scheme and panoramic windows.

Lana is kitted out with everything we have come to expect with a superyacht of this size, featuring a spa, gym, cinema, helipad, and outdoor pool. Perhaps most striking is its Beach Club which comes with folding terraces. Currently situated in the Middle East, this impressive superyacht is well-prepared for a full season of cruising.

Delivered 12 weeks ahead of schedule in the summer of 2019, Madsummer is a striking vessel, designed by the renowned Espen Oeino. Studio Laura Sessa furnished the interior, making use of a broad and bold color palette. Each of the 10 staterooms have a custom color scheme that is both contemporary and tastefully finished. Sessa has applied similar levels of customization throughout the ship. One notable detail of this is the custom-built dining table (a work of art in itself), which is topped off with layers of colored lacquer for a beautiful result.

For the nautically inclined, the ultra-modern bridge is situated alongside the master suite, allowing the charterer easy access to the organizational hub of the yacht. The vessel’s fundamentals are state-of-the-art, with a 125kW, lithium-ion battery pack as just one example of this. This battery means less fuel is required and helpfully retains any excess energy produced.

Also a relatively new vessel, Lady S was delivered in 2019 by Dutch builder Feadship. The interior was designed by Reymond Langton and described by them as “a contemporary jewelry box”, with the glitzy white and crystal chandeliers just one detail that highlights the truth behind this statement. Such is the quality of its construction Lady S was the recipient of two awards from Boat International for both its interior and exterior design.

Beyond aesthetics, the vessel is equipped with all the amenities and facilities that any charterer could desire, making her worthy of being on any list of the most expensive yachts. This includes the very first IMAX cinema to be installed on a yacht, a basketball court and ice plunge pool, along with all else that you would expect in this price range.

Aquarius is an eye-catching vessel. Her all-white four-deck exterior was designed by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design and built by Feadship. The company was also responsible for its interior, one of its notable features being the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround its outsides. In keeping with its ambitious glass work, there is a bar at water level underneath a glass-bottom pool, that when emptied can turn into a dance floor. Based in the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter, Aquarius has six VIP cabins, with a private deck for the master suite, suitable for 14 guests in total.

Kismet has more than a touch of glamour about her, previously hosting Beyoncé and Jay-Z, along with other celebrities, while it has recently featured in ‘Six Underground’, Michael Bay’s $150 million film. With this level of celeb appeal, it’s no surprise that she’s one of the most expensive yacht charters on the market. The appeal is clear with the ability to hold large parties for up to 270 guests and two helipads for ease of access for the world’s ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

Owned by Shadid Khan, owner of NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Kismet features a large silver jaguar at the bow in a nod to his team. The interior was designed by Reymond Langton, who was inspired by “champagne and caviar”.

Lengton has successfully combined traditional opulence with the latest technology, including state-of-the-art video walls that can switch between regular television and moving artwork. The deck is laid with black marble, while the master suite’s bathroom contains an onyx bath that oozes glamor.

best superyachts to charter

This striking (and expensive) yacht is sure to turn heads wherever she goes. Designed by Winch Design, Excellence remains at the forefront of what a modern superyacht should look and feel like. The curved floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass is designed to reflect her surroundings. Natural light floods through the triple-height glass atrium and the full-height windows. Her striking and angular plumb bow gives her the unmistakable look of a futuristic spaceship. There is a large swimming pool with a swim-up bar on the main deck aft and an upper deck entirely dedicated to the owner. Above the owner’s deck is the substantial sun deck with a lounge area and jacuzzi. There is also a large water-level tender garage where the yacht’s limousine tenders are stored.

At just under 312 ft, O’Pari is the largest superyacht Greek yard Golden Yachts has produced and was delivered in June of this year, quickly becoming one of the most expensive yachts in the world. Both the interior and exterior were designed by Studio Vafiadias and part of the brief was to commission a custom art collection for display onboard.

The theme chosen for this was the relationship between man and nature, a particularly apt choice given the generous outdoor space on O’Pari . This includes a huge sky lounge, with panoramic ocean views, as well as a bar with DJ booth and an alfresco dining area on the upper deck. Also on the upper deck is the master suite with all other guests suites located on the main deck. Available to charter in some of the most attractive regions in the world, the Golden Yachts flagship is an outright success and is one of the most attractive high-end options out there.

The world’s most expensive yachts for charter

Home > Relevance Yacht News > The world’s most expensive yachts for charter

Posted by Joanna Lewis , 16 Aug 2023

The luxury yacht charter market was valued at US$18.9 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $26.5 billion by 2027. And it’s no surprise that this market is booming. According to the latest Wealth-X Ultra-Wealth Report , there are 295,450 UHNWIs globally, and their wealth is growing, with 69% of these wealthy individuals expecting their wealth to increase this year.

The boom in luxury yacht charters can also be attributed to the changing lifestyle habits of the world’s ultra-rich. These wealthy individuals are increasingly seeking exclusive and private experiences tailored to meet their precise needs. A luxury yacht charter offers a self-sufficient sanctuary, enabling UHNWIs to tailor every element of their getaway while enjoying ultra-lux amenities and world-class service that rivals the world’s most exclusive resorts – all with the utmost discretion.

Catering to this booming market and the demands of UHNWIs is a growing fleet of ultra-luxurious superyacht charter vessels, with the world’s most exclusive commanding charter fees of over 1 million Euros per week.

It’s no surprise that yachts built by the world’s most esteemed European shipbuilders, including Lurssen, Feadship, and Oceanco, dominate the list.

Relevance Yacht has been marketing the world’s most expensive mega yachts for over a decade to an international clientele of UHNWIs.

Here we look at some of the world’s most expensive yachts for charter that are re-shaping the industry in terms of technology, design, and out-of-this-world amenities.

The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

Image for article titled The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Read on to learn more about the most luxurious yachts available for chartering in 2024.

15 Most Expensive Yachts In The World | 2024 Edition

While there is no official definition of a yacht, it can be simply described as a large vessel (with cabins) intended for luxury or pleasure purposes. Any yacht over 40 meters in length is usually identified as a superyacht.

Modern superyachts are designed with the utmost focus on comfort and power. They are required to accommodate various luxurious amenities to cater to every need of the owner and guests. It includes anything from swimming pools, spas, and entertainment centers to water sports toys and helipads.

While some superyachts are exclusively used by their owners, many are offered to charter businesses through which these superyachts can be rented or chartered. The cost of leasing a superyacht could be anywhere between $80,000 to a staggering $4 million per week.

So what are the most expensive yachts in the world? Who owns them, and what extravagant amenities do they have? Let’s find out.

11. Pelorus – $300 Million

Pelorus superyacht

Launched In : 2003

Builder : Lürssen Current Owner : Samuel Tak Lee

Pelorus is the oldest superyacht on this list and has a rich history. Since its completion in 2003, the vessel has changed hands several times.

Pelorus was initially ordered by a Saudi businessman named Sheikh Abdul Mohsen in 1999. The construction started in the year 2000 and entered service two years later in 2003.

However, the yacht was sold to the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich within a year of its launch. As a new owner, Roman Abramovich made several modifications to the superyacht, which included adding a second helicopter pad.

In 2011, Pelorus was bought by David Geffen for about $300 million. But he sold the yacht after a brief period to sultan Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan of UAE.

The superyacht changed ownership again in 2016. Its current owner is Samuel Tak Lee, a Hong Kong-based real estate billionaire.

At 115 meters in length, Pelorus is perhaps the smallest superyacht on this list, but it is still a gigantic vessel. For perspective, the total length of an entire football field is 110 meters. It has a volume of 5,317 gt.

Pelorus has a cruising speed of 14 knots or 26 kph and a reported maximum speed of 20 knots (37 kph).

10. Dubai – $400 Million

Dubai superyacht

Launched In : 2006

Builder : Blohm+Voss Owner : Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

‘Dubai’ is a superyacht owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the vice president/prime minister of the United Arab Emirates. It is currently the tenth most expensive superyacht in the world.

Until 2009, it was the largest private superyacht in the world but was surpassed by Eclipse, Azzam, and Fulk Al Salamah.

The yacht is built by Blohm+Voss, a German shipbuilding company best known for producing the German battleship Bismark during World War II. Blohm+Voss was acquired by the Lürssen shipyard in 2016.

Dubai superyacht is designed by renowned yacht designer Andrew Winch along with interior designer firm Platinum Yachts.

Builder : Blohm+Voss Owner : Roman Abramovich

Eclipse is a massive superyacht owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. He is currently the 13the richest individual in Russia and made his wealth through the steel industry and other investments.

After its launch in 2009, Eclipse became the world’s largest private yacht. However, it has been surpassed by Fulk Al Salamah and Azzam in recent years.

Eclipse was built by Blohm+Voss, three years after the Dubai superyacht, in 2009. Its estimated cost is around €340 million.

The superyacht accommodates about a dozen of luxurious cabins for guests, two helipads, an entertainment hall, and a mini-submarine that can submerge up to 50 meters below the surface.

While it is clear that Eclipse is no ordinary superyacht, what makes it truly stand out from the rest is its military-styled missile defense system that detects and fires missiles at possible threats.

The yacht also features an ‘anti-photo shield’ for enhanced privacy. When activated, the shield detects a CCD sensor (closed coupled device) and fires a shot of laser in its direction to destroy any photographs. However, the effectiveness of such technology remains debatable .

Eclipse has a length of 162.5 meters and a volume of 13,000 gt. Its beam is 22 meters, and the draft is 5.9 meters. The vessel is powered by four MTU diesel engines and has a maximum speed of 22 knots or 40.7 km per hour.

The Flying Fox is a luxury yacht built by Germany’s Lürssen shipyard in 2019. It is perhaps the world’s largest and most expensive yacht available for charter. A week-long vacation on this superyacht would cost you about $4 million.

This spectacular vessel is a result of collective design work from interior designer Mark Berryman and renowned superyacht architect Espen Oeino . Apart from the Flying Fox, Mr. Oeino is known for his work on other superyachts such as Silver Fast and Octopus (owned by Microsoft’s co-founder Paul Allen).

Like most modern superyachts, the Flying Fox is primarily centered around wellness and watersports themes. Its exceptional tender garage carries nearly every water sports equipment from hoverboards and seabobs to windsurfs and flying boards. Moreover, it also carries a personal submarine that can be launched using a crane.

Often regarded as a ‘floating resort,’ the superyacht has guest suits, a two-level saloon space, a specialized gym, multiple fireplaces, and lots of greenery.

But perhaps its most eye-catching feature is the 12-meter deck pool with adjustable height floor, massage jets at one side, and swim jets at the other. Moreover, the yacht also carries a cryosauna which can help you emulate the post-workout endorphins rush.

Due to the sheer size and splendor of the Flying Fox, it was speculated that the yacht was owned by Jeff Bezos (the world’s richest person in 2019).

However, in 2022, it was revealed that the actual owner of the yacht is a Russian oligarch named Dmitry Kamenshchik.

The Flying Fox measures 136 meters in length and 9,022 gt in internal volume. It has a beam of 22.5 meters and a draft of 5.1 meters. It is currently the 22nd largest yacht in the world by length.

More To Know

How long it takes to build a superyacht.

The construction of a superyacht is usually done in four phases – planning or design, engineering, superstructure construction, and outfitting.

It takes about three to four years to build an entire custom superyacht. While it takes less time to construct a vessel on a pre-developed platform with standard elements, building a customized superyacht that caters to all your requirements takes more time. You also have to take unexpected delays into consideration.

The design or planning is the most critical phase in a superyacht construction. Considering the budget and specific requirements, the entire process could take between nine months and a year.

The Current International Market for Luxury Superyachts

The yacht industry is on the rise, and the demand for luxury superyachts has exploded in the last few years during soaring stock markets and crypto gains. Most of the demand is from the United States.

The global yacht industry is valued at $64 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $84.7 Billion by 2027 growing at a CAGR of 4.1 percent.

According to Boat International’s Global Order Book, about 1,024 superyachts are under construction or on order globally in 2022. It is about a 25 percent increase from the last year’s 821 vessels.

A large chunk of these under-construction superyachts is semi-custom options that are relatively smaller in size than most superyachts on this list. Moreover, about 33 percent of these orders are some sort of expedition superyachts that can sail through ice and other remote regions of the world.

The 20 Most Expensive Tequilas in the World

' src=

What are the most expensive tequilas in the world?

Tequila is one of the most popular liquors in the world and, in the United States alone, nearly 20 million 9-liter cases are consumed every year!

Whether you’re drinking it neat or mixing it into a margarita, you probably have a favorite brand that you know tastes great.

However, some brands can get incredibly expensive, and it is these tequilas that we are counting down today.

How did we select this list of tequilas?

We’ve put over 10 hours of research into re-writing and updating this list for 2024.

The tequilas on this list were selected by taking the current average sale price, at the time of writing.

Prices for rare tequila can vary depending on where they’re listed for sale; so for each tequila on this list, we checked the price across multiple websites and settled on the average.

Next comes the question, when does tequila stop being tequila, and start being artwork?

If you’re a fan of tequila you can probably think of at least one brand that treats their bottles as artwork.

These bottles can often be worth thousands, but is it all just similar tequila in a fancy and unique bottle?

We’ve decided we’re not going to be the judge of what’s tequila and what’s artwork, so what you see on this list reflects a true order, based on price per bottle.

The 2 Most Expensive Tequilas in the World

Tequila is a very versatile liquor and there is no shortage of varieties you can find at your local store.

That said, some of these tequilas are reserved for only the most wealthy buyers, and you certainly won’t want to drink them on a casual night out.

Without further ado, here’s our list of the 20 most expensive tequilas money can buy:

20. 1800 Coleccion Tequila

Most Expensive Tequilas - 1800 Coleccion Tequila

Price/Bottle: $2,000

This unique expensive tequila gets its name from the year that distillers started using oak barrels for aging, and it is owned by the insanely wealthy Beckmann family.

Distilled twice during its 10-year aging process, this tequila has a flavor reminiscent of Amaretto, but with a bolder kick that reminds you that it’s tequila.

For $2,000, this tequila comes in its own crystal decanter trimmed with pewter and securely placed in a lavish case lined with suede to protect its precious contents.

It doesn’t get much more high-end than that!

19. Barrique de Ponciano Porfidio

3. Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario The Rolling Stones Special Edition

Most Expensive Tequilas - Jose Cuervo 250 Anniversario Rolling Stones

Price/Bottle: $75,000

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Case Cuervo, Jose Cuervo released the 250 Anniversario tequila.

They also released a limited edition of the tequila, in collaboration with the Rolling Stones rock band.

The Jose Cuervo brand played a leading role in the Rolling Stones’ 1972 North American tour, ‘Tequila Sunrise’.

For the Rolling Stones special edition, the tequila bottle is embossed with the famous ‘Hot Lips’ logo in 14-carat gold, and spikes along the sides.

It also comes packaged in a leather guitar-shaped case, including seven shot glasses.

The tequila was initially released with a price tag of just $4,000, but prices have skyrocketed to almost $75,000 since then.

2. Tequila Ley .925 Ultra-Premium

Most Expensive Tequilas - Tequila Ley .925 Ultra-Premium

Price/Bottle: $225,000

In 2006, the artists at Tequila Ley designed three unique bottles to contain the tequila designed by Mexican artist Alejandro Gomez.

Each bottle was only created 33 times, for a total of 99 bottles, each more expensive than the last.

While this tequila in a glass bottle retails for $3,500, the gold and silver bottle goes for $25,000, and the gold and platinum for $150,000.

The most expensive of all was the white gold and platinum, which carried the insane price tag of $225,000!

Although the tequila itself is delectable, the real stars are the bottles that collectors and tequila enthusiasts scrambled to try and grab while they lasted.

1. Tequila Ley .925 Diamante

Most Expensive Tequilas - Tequila Ley .925 Diamante

Price/Bottle: $3.5 Million

Recorded as the most expensive tequila ever sold by a mile, the .925 Diamante is a true work of art.

The Ley .925 Diamante tequila is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, which is grown in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.

The tequila is then aged for 7 years inside French Oak barrels before being poured into a platinum and white gold version of Tequila Ley’s signature-shaped bottle.

However, none of these things truly account for the Diamante’s insane price tag.

As the name might suggest, the bottle is encrusted with 4000 diamonds, amounting to a total of 18.5 carats.

Now that we’ve come to the end of the list, you might have noticed a common theme.

Clase Azul had the most entries on this list, holding seven positions in the top 20.

This is largely due to the fact they treat their bottles as artwork, often showcasing hand-painted art in limited edition releases.

That’s not to take away from their tequila, but to say that their unique approach is very popular among collectors and tequila enthusiasts alike.

Here’s a quick recap of the 20 most expensive tequilas in the world:

The 25 most expensive cigars in the world.

most expensive yacht for rent

What are the most expensive cigars in the world?

Cigars have risen in price rapidly over the past two decades.

They’re associated with luxury and wealth more than ever before, and cigar aficionados are constantly looking for rare and exclusive cigars to add to their collections.

This begs the question: how expensive can cigars be, and how difficult could it be to get your hands on the rarest of the rare?

Today we’re bringing you our updated list of the most expensive cigars in the world.

How did we select this list of cigars?

One of the issues with many expensive cigar lists on the internet, including the original version of our own, is how the cigar values are calculated.

For instance, there was once an auction for a very rare box of cigars that sold for more than half a million dollars, but the box consisted of almost 800 cigars. More details on that are below.

We’ve decided to thoroughly calculate the price/stick for each of the entries on this list, so you can have a clearer understanding of exactly which cigars are the most expensive in the world.

Whilst it may be difficult to obtain some of these cigars individually, assuming you’d want to obtain them of course, we think this is the best way of ranking the list.

Another thing we decided to take into account is limited edition releases which are packaged in custom humidors instead of regular boxes.

These humidors can often cost thousands of dollars alone, and end up distorting the price of the cigar.

Can people still buy these cigars?

Most of the cigars featured on this list can still be bought and smoked to this day.

Many of them are limited edition lines and are likely harder to find than most cigars.

What exactly makes some cigars more expensive than others?

Typically, there are a few things that can factor into cigar price:

  • Limited edition productions
  • Aged tobacco
  • Brand recognition

Limited edition productions can often limit the total number of cigars produced, and as time passes the number of those remaining drops.

A lot of rare cigar releases also use aged tobacco leaves, and you’ll see several brands on this list that age their tobacco for at least 10 years before the cigar is rolled.

Brand recognition also plays a part as particular brands such as Cohiba are always sought after.

Finally, if none of the above results in a cigar being expensive, there are a select few who will cover cigars in gold leaf, and diamonds, and infuse them with expensive cognac.

But more on that later.

The 25 Most Expensive Cigars

We’ve done countless hours of research to ensure that our updated version of this list is the best resource available.

Without further ado, let’s get into this list of the 25 most expensive cigars in the world:

Gran Reservas are also produced with only 15 sticks per box, instead of the usual 20.

Naturally, people across China, Hong Kong, and various other countries in Asia were the first to see these cigars unveiled.

Only 18,888 boxes of the Siglo De Oro will be produced.

When we take a look at the average price of an Oliva cigar, we can see a price of around $10, so what’s different?

The packaging is the most notable difference, with the Roaring Twenties SLE cigars being placed in boxes produced by Daniel Marshall.

In addition, there will only ever be 300 boxes created, for a total of 3000 cigars.

Marshall then produced a limited run of the cigar which would be packaged in a custom-signed travel humidor.

The 24kt cigar comes in two sizes, Torpedo and Gigante, with the Gigante size being the more expensive of the two.

Most Expensive Cigars - Cohiba 55 Aniversario Edicion Limitada 2021

Price/Stick: $500

While not the most expensive release from Cohiba in the year 2021, the next entry on this list was certainly an important one.

The 55 Anniversario Edicion Limitada 2021 marked the 55th anniversary of Cohiba.

As the name suggests, the cigar was indeed a limited edition, and difficult to get a hold of.

The cigar was released in 10-count boxes, costing roughly $5000/box.

7. Davidoff Oro Blanco

Most Expensive Cigars - Davidoff Oro Blanco

Price/Stick: $600

Davidoff claims that the Oro Blanco is the most exceptional cigar they’ve ever created.

The Oro Blanco is a 6-inch, 54 ring gauge, toro-shaped cigar, with an all-Dominican wrapper, binder, and filler

So why does it cost $600 per cigar?

One of the main reasons for its high cost is due to Davidoff’s aging process.

The Oro Blanco, which translates to “White Gold”, is made with tobacco leaves grown in areas with some of the richest soil across the entire Dominican Republic.

The leaves are then aged for 12 years before the cigar is rolled; a task completed only by Davidoff’s most experienced rollers (15+ years of experience).

After one additional year of aging, the single cigar is then reviewed, approved, and placed into a custom box.

6. Mayan Sicars

Price/stick: $633.

At the beginning of this article, we mentioned a specific auction involving a box of 800 cigars.

In 2012, a large crate of Mayan cigars, expected to be more than 600 years old, was discovered in Guatemala.

It’s important to mention that the most reliable source of this information mentions the sale of all 800 cigars for a total of $507,000, which would put the price/stick at $633.

The cigars were buried deep below the surface in sealed clay pots, and discovered by an archeologist team from Tampa University.

Who paid the $507,000? A man named Gary Liotta, owner of the Santiago Cigar Factory in New York.

5. Gurkha His Majesty’s Reserve

The filler is infused with Louis XIII cognac, which gives it an amazing aroma.

This cigar is very rare and special, and the cognac has been known for selling only to dignitaries worldwide.

A total of 75 boxes are being made every year. The incredible aroma, as well as the taste of the cigar, will be something that you will be so impressed with that you will never forget.

The box is manufactured to look like a book.

Cohiba’s Ideales Coleccion 2021 is the last cigar to feature on this list that isn’t either covered in gold leaf and crystals or nearly 20 years old.

Which makes it the most expensive plain cigar that can still be purchased today.

3. Gurkha Black Dragon (2006 Edition)

Price/stick: $1,150.

The Gurkha Black Dragon is a cigar that you can still buy and smoke newer versions of to this day, but the original 2006 edition is a rare find.

The OG boxes were handmade using camel bone and were limited to just 5 boxes of 100 cigars.

Those who have smoked the original Black Dragon from 2006, and the newer editions seem to conclude that the taste is more or less the same.

Although the 2006 first edition of the Gurkha Black Dragon cost around $1,150, given how limited it was at the time; the current version of this cigar can be added to your collection for just $40/stick.

2. King of Denmark Cigar

Price/stick: $4,500.

The King of Denmark cigar is produced by Royal Danish and only 30 sticks are rolled per day.

Buyers can customize the cigar with both 24KT gold leaf and Swarovski crystals.

They’re also able to have their name inscribed on the cigar.

Whilst this cigar doesn’t have to cost you thousands, it can reach up to $4,500/stick depending on the customization.

1. Gurkha Royal Courtesan

Most Expensive Cigars - Gurkha Royal Courtesan

Price/Stick: $1.36 Million

The most expensive cigar in the world is the Gurkha Royal Courtesan cigar.

The Royal Courtesan is worth a ridiculous $1.36 million per stick.

One of the most interesting things here is that Gurkha are not known for their quality.

In fact, Gurkha’s quality control is often a common problem reported by fellow cigar aficionados.

This begs the question: why does this cigar cost so much more money than anything else on the list before it?

Let’s get into the details of the Royal Courtesan:

  • The cigar’s filler is infused with Remy Martin’s Louis XIII cognac.
  • It’s hand-rolled by a select few skilled rollers, who are blindfolded.
  • The band of the cigar is covered in 5-carat diamonds.
  • Rare Himalayan tobacco leaves are used for the wrapper.
  • The wrapper is also covered in a layer of 24KT gold leaf.
  • Personal delivery to the owner by a messenger

Notable Mentions

That concludes our main list of the 25 most expensive cigars in the world.

There are, however, a few entries we’d like to mention.

Although these weren’t included in the main list, they’re worth mentioning to any fellow cigar aficionado.

Regius Double Corona Cigar

Price: $52,000.

We decided to leave out the Regius Double Corona from our main list as the cigar itself is not the main reason for the high price.

In 2013, Regius Cigars developed their Double Corona cigar, which is produced in Nicaragua.

However, the main attraction was not actually the cigar itself, but what was included with the purchase.

The buyer of the cigar would be flown first class out to Regius headquarters in Nicaragua, where they would be given a private tour of the factory.

They would also be allowed to create their own cigar blend, and be given 1000 sticks of said blend to take home with them.

Gran Habano #5 El Gigante

Price: $185,000.

Technically this cigar does have a clear price/stick, selling for $185,000 in 2013.

However, it’s probably worth mentioning that the cigar is 19 feet long, 3 feet thick, and weighs over 600 pounds.

Here are some interesting facts about the Gran Habano #5 El Gigante:

  • Despite its size, it can be smoked by multiple people at the same time.
  • Made with 1,600 pounds of tobacco.
  • Equivalent to smoking 25,000 cigars
  • Contains 15,000 wrapper leaves
  • Has a ring gauge of 1920
  • Weighs 2,500 pounds with the wooden case

We decided to separate the El Gigante from our main list of expensive cigars, but the story itself is worth mentioning.

The Most Expensive Countries to Live in

Which are the most expensive countries to live in worldwide? Hold tight, as you’re about to find out.

If you’ve dreamed about moving abroad and starting life afresh in a new country, then read through this list before you do, as you might be shocked to find out just how expensive some of these lesser-known countries are.

We’ve put together this list based on accommodation and living expenses for a single person living in the capital city of each country, and according to population.

Here’s a list of the 10 most expensive countries to live in worldwide…

The list of countries and figures mentioned below have been compiled from various sources around the web, such as World Population Review & Nomad List .

These are the 10 most expensive countries to live in worldwide:

10. Barbados – $2,061

Most Expensive Countries - Barbados

Kicking off our list of the 10 most expensive countries to live in worldwide, is Barbados.

Barbados is a sovereign island nation in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, which is the Caribbean region of North America.

It covers approximately 349km² and is 23 kilometres wide and 34 kilometres long, with a total population of 285,719 people.

Barbados is the fourth-most densely populated country in the Americas and, it’s capital city, Bridgetown, has approximately 110,000 people living in it.

To rent a one-bedroom studio apartment in Bridgetown, you’re looking at spending around $500 a month, or $100 a night in an Airbnb.

A basic meal out will cost you no less than $13. A beer is around $6.50 and coffee is approximately $5.00 depending on where you go.

9. Japan – $2,612

Most Expensive Countries - Japan

The ninth most expensive country to live in worldwide is Japan.

Japan is an archipelago island nation in South-East Asia, made up of 6,852 islands, with a current total population of 126.8 million people.

Of the 6,582 islands, the four largest islands account for the majority of inhabitants, as roughly 97% Japans population live on the four islands.

Japan has many major cities, like Osaka, Yokohoma, Nagoya and Sapporo, which are all populated by more than 2 million people.

However, Tokyo, Japans Capital City and the largest city in Japan, has an approximate population of 37 million people.

To rent a one-bedroom studio apartment in Tokyo, you’re looking at spending in the region of $1,370 a month, or $111 a night in an Airbnb.

Eating out varies in price, but as an average for one person, you should be looking at spending around $15.00 for a basic meal and around $6.00 for a beer.

Coffee is also pretty reasonable, considering how expensive Tokyo is, at $2.81 a cup.

8. Norway – $2,659

Most Expensive Countries - Norway

Located in Northern Europe, Norway is a Scandinavian country with a total population of 5.3 million people.

Norway shares its borders with Sweden, Russia and Finland, and has a total landmass of 385,203 km².

It’s only the 171st most densely populated country on earth, with roughly 14 people for every square kilometre.

Rent is expensive in Norway’s capital, so renting a one-bedroom studio apartment in Oslo, will set you back around $1,193 a month, or $85 a night in an Airbnb.

You won’t have much change left from $15 when buying a meal out, and a beer will set you back around $9.11.

7. The Bahamas – $2,704

Most Expensive Countries - The Bahamas

The next most expensive country in the world to live in is The Bahamas.

Made up of over 700 islands, the Bahamas has an approximate population of 389,482 million people living across its 13,943km² landmass.

The largest city in the Bahamas is Nassau, with a total population of 255,000.

If you’re thinking about visiting the Bahamas, then you should budget approximately $950 a month for a one-bedroom studio apartment in the city, or $149 a night for an Airbnb.

You’ll need to take at least $50-$100 with you when you go out for a meal and some drinks, as a basic meal costs around $15-$20 and a beer will cost you around $2.50.

Coffee is a little on the expensive side, at around $5 each.

6. Luxembourg – $2,751

Most Expensive Countries - Luxembourg

One of the smallest countries on our list, Luxembourg, is also one of the smallest sovereign nations on the planet, and it won’t leave you with a lot of wiggle room when it comes to your monthly expenses.

Luxembourg is a landlocked country, located in western Europe, and has an estimated population of 620,319 people.

Its population is small compared to other countries on the list, however, it has roughly 207 people per square kilometre, making it the 67th most densely populated country on earth.

When you arrive in Luxembourg City, you can expect to pay around $1,322 per month for a one-bedroom studio apartment, or $80 a night in an Airbnb.

Luxembourg seems like it’s slightly more expensive than the Bahamas when it comes to luxuries like beer and coffee, as one beer will cost you around $9 and coffee will set you back $6.

Eating a basic meal out will cost between $17-$25 for one person depending on what you order.

5. Iceland – $2,802

Most Expensive Countries - Iceland

Coming in at number five on our list of the most expensive countries in the world is Iceland.

Iceland is located between the North and Atlantic Oceans and has a total surface area of 103,001 square kilometres.

However, Iceland’s population of 339,949 people, remains relatively low in comparison to others on our list as its harsh geographical landscape proves difficult to live in for many, at times.

As a result, Iceland has the lowest population density of any European country, at just 3 people per kilometre.

Staying in Iceland will cost you approximately $1,236 a month for a one-bedroom studio apartment in the capital city of Reykjavik, or $128 a night in an Airbnb.

For a one-bedroom studio apartment, you’re looking at $1,917 a month, or $96 a night in an Airbnb.

Bern has approximately 133,000 people living there and accommodation for a month in Bern, for one person, will cost in the region of $1,366, or $86 a night in an Airbnb.

A meal out will cost you approximately $15-$20, with an additional beer costing around $6.00 and coffee costing around $5.00 a cup.

2. Cayman Islands – $3,387

Most Expensive Countries - Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is the second most populated British overseas territory in the world, just behind Bermuda.

It is located in the western end of the Caribbean sea and has a total current population of approximately 63,000 people.

It’s made up of a number of islands like Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.

The Cayman Islands are well known for housing offshore companies, and it’s believed that there are over 100,000 companies registered in the Cayman Islands.

If you’re considering doing business in George Town, the capital city of the Cayman Islands, then a one-bedroom studio apartment will cost you around $1,924 a month or $83 a night in an Airbnb.

Food and drink on the island are where you might spend a lot of your money.

Pricey digs: A look at the most expensive condo rentals in Miami-Dade

Faena House penthouse tops the list this year for units rented out, at $135K a month

Faena House PH Rents for Record Price; Top Miami-Dade Rentals

A penthouse at the oceanfront Faena House is renting out for $135,000 a month, marking the most expensive condo rental in Miami-Dade County since 2021.

The lease for the six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom unit at 3315 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach is also tied for the second priciest annual condo rental deal ever inked in the county, according to the Multiple Listing Service. Douglas Elliman agent Darin Tansey, who represented the landlord, said the high-end market has been active.

Faena House PH Rents for Record Price; Top Miami-Dade Rentals

Tansey previously had the 6,400-square-foot penthouse A on the market for sale, asking $33 million, or $5,156 per square foot. He declined to name the tenant or identify the owner. Records show a Delaware LLC paid $29 million for the Faena House penthouse in late 2015. It’s renting the condo out for $1.6 million per year.

The high rental cost did not seem to deter prospective tenants.

“I had regular calls from outside brokers asking if the owner would ever consider renting it out,” Tansey said. “While I had this deal going, two additional people contacted me asking if they could rent it.”

Tansey said he is working on two rentals at Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach . One would be for $55,000 a month and the other for $85,000 a month.

Waterfront single-family homes on the market for rent in Miami Beach ask as much as $300,000 a month, but condos are typically less pricey. Still, the highest-priced condo rental on the market in Miami Beach currently is the penthouse at Icon South Beach, at 450 Alton Road. The 9,039-square-foot, seven bedroom unit is asking $210,000 a month, according to the listing. The top 10 listings bottom out at $61,000 per month.

Here’s a look at the most expensive secured condo rentals in Miami-Dade County, according to the MLS.

Four Seasons Residences at the Surf Club | Rented for $150K a month

Penthouse 2 in the south tower of Four Seasons Residences at the Surf Club rented for $150,000 a month in December 2021. It’s the most expensive on-market condo rental ever in Miami-Dade. The five-bedroom, eight-bathroom and three half-bath unit at 9001 Collins Avenue in Surfside spans 5,675 square feet. Units at the Surf Club often trade for some of the highest prices per square foot in Miami-Dade County.

Faena House | Rented for $135K a month

Faena House PH Rents for Record Price; Top Miami-Dade Rentals

The Delaware entity Pomes Miami Beach acquired penthouse A at Faena House in late 2015, the same year that the building was completed. It was recently rented for a period of two years for a total of more than $3.2 million. This penthouse is not one of the units that billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin bought and sold at Faena House.

Four Seasons Residences at the Surf Club | Rented for $135K a month

Unit 413 in the north tower of Four Seasons Residences at the Surf Club rented for $135,000 a month in April 2021. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom and one half-bath condo at 9111 Collins Avenue spans 3,800 square feet.

Palazzo Del Mare on Fisher Island | Rented for $120K a month

Faena House PH Rents for Record Price; Top Miami-Dade Rentals

The owner of 7143 Fisher Island Drive rented out their unit at Palazzo Del Mare for $120,000 a month in December 2022. The 7,025-square-foot, five-bedroom luxury condo last sold for $14.2 million in 2011. The Fisher Island unit is now on the market for sale asking $22.5 million with Tatyana Ionin of Coldwell Banker.

These are the most expensive cities to rent a car this fall

Your leaf peeping could set you back

Erika Mailman

We’re used to thinking of certain big cities as having huge car rental fees tacked on, especially if you pick up the car at the airport (cough, Boston). But this fall, a city we don’t necessarily associate with high prices has the highest car rental fees in the nation: Little Rock, Arkansas. A survey by Cheapcarrental.com looked at prices at 100 different airports for September through November of this year. The average daily rate for the cheapest car at Little Rock’s Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport was $95, a price that has risen about 20 percent compared with last fall’s prices. Across the other airports, rates have risen just 0.5 percent since last autumn.

The second most expensive city to pick up a car rental for leaf-peeping is Charleston, South Carolina, at $91 per day for the most inexpensive car, while the third is Madison, Wisconsin, at $87 per day.

Conversely, the city with the most affordable car rentals is Raleigh, North Carolina, where you’ll only have to fork out $41 to go tooling along the Blue Ridge Parkway a few hours away.

For this survey, only rental companies located directly at a destination's airport or at the airport's rental car center were considered.

The 10 most expensive cities for car rentals this fall:

1. Little Rock: $95 2. Charleston: $91 3. Madison: $87 4. Reno: $86 4. St. Petersburg: $86 6. Boise: $85 7. Palm Springs: $83 8. Colorado Springs: $82 8. San Francisco : $82 10. Los Angeles: $80

Wedding gift demands have been branded "cheeky", with a new survey finding a quarter of people think the amount spent on attending a wedding is enough of a gift already.

The research, by greetings card marketplace Thortful, found almost half (48%) think the expectation of cost for many wedding gifts is "annoying".

Other reasons those questioned were against wedding gifts are shown in this chart:

It comes as the cost of attending a wedding as a guest increased by 18% between 2022 and 2023 (from £883 on average to £1,045), with overnight stays and lavish hen and stag dos topping the list of expenses.

The surveyr found millennials are the most generous, while Generation X think you should spend the least, with almost a third of them stating less than £30 is sufficient for newlyweds.

Twice as many men as women said they would spend big money (£100+) on wedding gifts, suggesting men are more generous when it comes to gifts (or they just have more money).

For those who are open to wedding gifts, almost a quarter want to spend less than £30 for their friend's or relative's gift.

The most popular response, of the survey of 1,000 people, was to spend between £31 and £70 on the happy couple, and this was pretty universal across all regional categories apart from Northern Ireland.

Anyone hoping for a big spend on their wedding, just 3% said they would spend more than three digits, while two-fifth (20%) were unsure about how much to stump up.

'Can I have a Peloton bike please?'

Responding to the survey, Joshua Adams from Manchester said: "I feel like it's completely cheeky, they don't need these things and requesting them is slightly spoilt. People already spend a fortune on the stags or hens, travel to the wedding, accommodation, book days off work, get new clothes, then you turn up and they're like 'Can I have a Peloton bike please?'"

He said the concept of a wedding gift is completely different to what it once was: "I think times have changed. Back in the '80s when our parents got married, they tended to do it at an earlier age and they genuinely didn't have anything because they were young. The idea of a wedding list then was to help a new couple get started in life."

He said he has seen everything from air fryers to weekends away on the lists of weddings he has attended, as well as smaller, but "expensive" items, including cutlery and table settings.

Eleanor Lewington from Selby said: "I was once given a John Lewis wedding gift list where the bride and groom had selected items from the store that they wanted and none of them were cheap! There was everything on there from kettle and toaster sets to televisions!"

The Renters Reform Bill returned to the Commons today, five years and four prime ministers after it was first promised.

This time it's Labour's version - with the new party of government vowing to improve and complete the set of proposals the Tories pledged, then watered down and then abandoned altogether before the general election.

Now it is being called the Renters Rights Bill, and it aims to "decisively level the playing field between landlords and tenants", according to housing minister Matthew Pennycook.

So what will be in the legislation?

The bill is wide-ranging and includes the following changes:

  • No-fault evictions banned:  Crucially, the legislation will include a blanket ban on no-fault evictions under Section 21 (S21) of the 1988 Housing Act. This allows landlords to evict tenants with two months' notice without providing a reason. Housing campaigners say they are a major contributing factor to rising homelessness.
  • Awaab's Law extended: This was named after the toddler who died after exposure in his family's social rented home in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. It proposed that social landlords will have to investigate hazards within 14 days, fix them within a further seven, and make emergency repairs within 24 hours. Under the bill, this will be extended to the private sector to ensure all landlords speedily address hazards and make homes safe.
  • Ban on mid-tenancy rent hikes:  It will also ban rent increases being written into contracts to prevent mid-tenancy hikes, leaving landlords only able to raise rent once a year at the market rate.
  • Allowing pets:  Labour's reforms will also give tenants the strengthened right to request a pet, which landlords must consider and cannot unreasonably refuse
  • Bidding wars crackdown: The reforms alsocrack down on bidding wars between potential tenants. Labour's bill will include a legal requirement for landlords and letting agents to publish the required rent for a property. Landlords and agents will be banned from "asking for, encouraging, or accepting any bids" above the publicly stated price.
  • Tenancy reform:  The bill will remove fixed-term assured tenancies, which mean renters are obliged to pay rent regardless of whether a property is up-to-standard and prevent them from easily moving out in response to changing circumstances, such as a relationship breakdown or new job.
  • Ban on benefit discrimination:  The bill will also outlaw landlords imposing a blanket ban on tenants receiving benefits or with children.

Thousands of workers being made redundant at Britain's biggest steelworks will receive at least £20,000 under government intervention to reduce the fallout from the closure of its blast furnaces.

As many as 2,800 jobs are to be lost, despite the previous government issuing £500m of funding. In return, the company would invest £750m.

Labour, which had expressed hope in opposition to reduce the number of redundancies, confirmed its intervention in government had failed to secure a rethink on the company's plans.

The last blast furnace currently used to produce steel is being closed and an electric arc furnace, which requires less labour, will be built to replace it.

The Tata Steel site in Port Talbot is the UK's single biggest source of CO2 emissions and its closure will reduce the UK's overall CO2 emissions by around 1.5%.

It is understood most job losses will have happened by Christmas, with the remaining redundancies taking place by March 2025.

The package was described by the government as the "most generous voluntary redundancy package ever for a restructure of this size" - read more here:

Mortgages are being used as a "weapon" by domestic abusers, plunging them into debt and homelessness, a charity has warned.

Survivors are left in arrears, with destroyed credit ratings and facing a lifetime of housing insecurity.

One woman described how she remains in a "mortgage prison" - despite having left her former husband more than a decade ago.

"I can't sell the property without his permission and, at any point, he can use his position to stop me from making mortgage repayments by withholding child support payments. Me and my children remain trapped in a mortgage prison with no way out."

The charity Surviving Economic Abuse said that in general, perpetrators are refusing to pay their agreed share of the mortgage, agree to new terms or sell up.

More than 1,000 women across the UK who have had a joint mortgage in the past two years, surveyed by Opinium on behalf of the charity, were asked about whether they had experienced mortgage-related abuse from a current or ex-partner.

One in eight (12%) cited at least one aspect of abusive behaviour related to the mortgage from a partner or ex-partner.

More than three-quarters (78%) of those who experienced abuse felt unable to leave their partner or an unsafe living arrangement due to abuse through the joint mortgage.

Nearly half (49%) had to cut back on utilities or go without essentials, such as food, clothing or toiletries, to cover monthly mortgage repayments.

Sam Smethers, interim chief executive of Surviving Economic Abuse, said: "Mortgage abuse is a hidden crime that’s destroying the lives of hundreds of thousands of survivors.

"Survivors are doing everything they can to make ends meet - cutting back on food, turning off the heating, and borrowing money to keep up with repayments. But right now, banks are limited in what they can do to stop abusers from causing a lifetime of debt and homelessness for survivors."

Rachel Reeves has signalled her first budget as chancellor could be a painful mix of spending cuts, tax rises and increased borrowing.

Speaking to Sky News after official figures showed the economy flatlined in July with GDP growth of 0.0%, she refused to rule out increasing business and wealth taxes, or further cuts to already strained departmental budgets, as she seeks to address what she says is a dire economic inheritance from the last government.

"I've been really honest that there are difficult decisions to come in the budget, on spending, on taxation and welfare, after the mess that the previous government created with the public finances and the state that they are in, that was inevitable," she said.

"I was clear during the election campaign that, if I became chancellor of the exchequer, tough choices lie ahead."

Ms Reeves has ruled out increasing personal income taxes, National Insurance and VAT as well as corporation tax, leaving a limited field of other taxes on private wealth and business.

She said her choices in the budget would be directed at getting a grip on the public finances.

"It is important to bring stability back to our economy, but we will do that in a way that helps promote growth, so we can grow our economy and make our country better off," she said.

An Instagram competition by a fast fashion brand has been criticised for not making it clear someone had won, falling foul of the advertising watchdog.

An Instagram post by Nasty Gal, posted on 3 December 2023, featured a picture of Paris Hilton on the phone, with text stating "$1000 Cash. That's hot."

The caption said "12 days of Christmas Giveaways. Day 3 of #Nasty12DaysofChristmas Win a $1000 CASH."

It outlined the terms, including tagging friends in the comments on the post.

But there was no announcement of a winner, despite requests from Nasty Gal's followers for that information - with questions raised over whether the promotion had been administered fairly.

Nasty Gal Ltd said they had replied to the winner's comment on the post because they believed that announcing competition winners via the comments section was standard practice for influencers and those within the fashion industry on social media.

They said the algorithm would mean it was "extremely likely" this comment would show up for their followers. They added that there was currently no guidance which stated that competition winners could not be announced via the comments section.

But they have fallen foul after advertising rules after the ASA pointed out there were thousands of comments on the post, which it considered meant Instagram users were extremely unlikely to know that a winner had been announced without clicking into and looking at the comments section below the post.

The algorithm, the ASA said, could not be relied upon to ensure Nasty Gal's comment was one of the top comments and therefore easily accessible to entrants. It said the fact users had commented asking about a winner also suggested this method was not sufficient.

The promotion breached CAP Code (Edition 12) rules, 8.2 (Promotional marketing) and 8.28.5 (Prize promotions).

Nasty Gal was told it could not run a competition again like this, unless it made clear a winner had been announced.

It's a busy morning for company announcements and plenty to watch out for on the markets.

The online property portal familiar to many looking for a new place to live, Rightmove, announced it had rejected a takeover bid from the Rupert Murdoch-owned Australian rival REA Group. The announcement was only good news for London Stock Exchange-listed Rightmove, which saw its share price rise 0.6%.

Europe's largest airport Heathrow reported a record number of passengers in the summer months amid booming demand for travel as 7.97 million people flew to or from its terminals in August, the fourth consecutive month of record numbers.

Travel demand was also good for business at WHSmith. The retailer reported its fast-growing UK and international travel business had sales growth of rise 10% over the year while the UK high street business fell 4%.

Getting from A to B could become cheaper as the oil price remained low. For the first time since December 2021 a barrel of Brent crude, the international benchmark, slipped below $70. This morning there's only been a minor rise to $70.68 a barrel.

After news of another month of a flatlining economy, there was little change in sterling with a pound buying nearly $1.31 - $1.309. Against the euro one pound equals €1.1839.

Heathrow has set a new monthly record for passenger numbers - and one billionaire pop star has been credited with helping.

Nearly eight million people passed through Britain's biggest airport in August, with its busiest day seeing 269,000 passengers on the 18th of the month.

The airport said Taylor Swift concerts brought in an additional 40,000 passengers this summer, with fans passing through its terminals for the European leg of her Eras Tour.

The star performed eight nights at Wembley and appeared in other cities on the continent.

Heathrow said that more than 950,000 Pret coffees were sold at the airport across July and August.

It is on course to serve 30 million passengers between June and September, which would be the most for that period in the airport's history.

Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey were popular summer holiday destinations last month.

Every Wednesday we ask top chefs to pick their favourite Cheap Eats where they live and when they cook at home. This week we speak to Nick Grieves, chef-owner of Ophelia  in Gosforth, Newcastle.

Hi Nick, can you tell us your favourite places around Newcastle where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

Barrio Comida in Durham - I've been a long-time fan, the food there is incredible and worth the short train journey out of Newcastle.

It's all class but I'd seriously recommend the birria tacos (with the consommé), camaron tacos and pollo quesadillas. Time it right for Taco Tuesday or for Happy Hour and you'll be well fed and watered for an absolute bargain.

Master Wang's in Newcastle - excellent, authentic and incredibly reasonable Chinese food just down from Haymarket in the centre of town.

A friend of mine recently told me about it and now I'm there whenever I get a free afternoon.

The pork dumplings in hot and sour soup, braised lamb noodles and their pork burger are all incredible and my go-to when ordering. I'd definitely recommend just ordering lots and sharing it between you.

What is your go-to cheap eat to cook at home when you have a night in?

It would most likely be a pasta dish, something fast and cheap with sausage, fresh tomatoes and a crumbly cheese such as Wensleydale.

During lockdown I posted a few at-home cooking videos on The Patricia's Instagram account - this was one of them and it's still up there on the highlights for a slightly more detailed walk-through.

You'll need some pasta (a small shape like fusilli, macaroni or orecchiette is ideal), a herby sausage like Lincolnshire, fresh cherry tomatoes, chilli flakes, garlic, Wensleydale and some fresh basil.

Start by crushing the garlic, halving the tomatoes, and removing the sausage from its casing and tearing it into small pieces.

Fry the sausage pieces in oil until you get a light colour on one side, then stir and move it over to half the pan.

In the other half of the pan, add the tomatoes, a bit of salt and some chilli flakes and fry it all for another five minutes or so.

Then lightly squash the tomatoes and combine them all, adding in your cooked pasta at the same time with a little pasta water to emulsify the sauce. Plate it up and top it with a good amount of torn fresh basil, thinly grated cheese and a drizzle of olive oil.

Super tasty, fast and cheap.

How did you get into cheffing?

I only started cooking seriously when I was 27 and took over The Garden House in Durham.

Before that, I was in construction and although I always cooked at home I never thought it would turn into a profession. It all happened by accident.

During the recession, the construction company I was working for in Qatar went bust. I came back to the North East and took on shared ownership of The Garden House with family and friends, just to make a bit of money.

We were pretty naive in the beginning and were short on kitchen staff, so I ended up helping with all the food and just fell in love with it.

From there I taught myself a lot, watching and reading everything I could, including a lot of Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray.

After leaving the pub I headed to London and worked in both Fera and The River Cafe where I learnt a great deal, especially about discipline, attention to detail, the importance of good produce and how proper kitchens work.

I loved my time there, but I'd always wanted to be my own boss and was desperate to open somewhere off my own back home in Newcastle.

Fortunately, backed by my gran Pat, I was able to open The Patricia in Jesmond shortly after that - she's the reason I am where I am today.

And then following on from the success of The Patricia I was then able to open my current restaurant, Ophelia, a French-inspired bistro in south Gosforth in Newcastle.

We've spoken to lots of top chefs - check out their cheap eats from around the country here...

The UK economy recorded no growth in July, according to official figures.

It's the second consecutive month of stagnation, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

GDP - the measure of everything produced in the UK - flatlined in the weeks after the election of the Labour government.

But there's "longer-term strength" in the services sector, meaning there was growth over the last three months as a whole and 0.5% expansion in the three months up to July.

Commenting on the GDP figures, Liz McKeown, ONS director of economic statistics, says: "The economy recorded no growth for the second month running, though longer term strength in the services sector meant there was growth over the last three months as a whole.

"July's monthly services growth was led by computer programmers and health, which recovered from strike action in June. These gains were partially offset by falls for advertising companies, architects and engineers.

"Manufacturing fell, overall, with a particularly poor month for car and machinery firms, while construction also declined."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves says: "I am under no illusion about the scale of the challenge we face and I will be honest with the British people that change will not happen overnight.

"Two quarters of positive economic growth does not make up for fourteen years of stagnation.

"That is why we are taking the long-term decisions now to fix the foundations of our economy."

Despite drop, Vancouver still most expensive place to rent in Canada

By Mike Lloyd and Charlie Carey

Posted September 11, 2024 6:55 am.

Last Updated September 11, 2024 7:28 pm.

Rental rates are down for the ninth straight month in Vancouver compared to a year ago, but that trend may be changing.

According to a national report from Rentals.ca, the average apartment rates for Vancouver reached just over $3,100 for August.

When looking month-to-month, rates have been creeping up steadily since spring.

With Vancouver still the most expensive city in Canada for rentals, it’s no surprise there’s a lot of pressure on shared accommodation. Giacomo Ladas with Rentals.ca breaks down the numbers for B.C.

  • Are Vancouver’s ‘affordable’ rentals really that?
  • B.C. landlord can increase rent by 23.5% after variable mortgage rate led to financial losses: RTB
  • B.C.’s 2025 rent increase limited to 3%
  • Vancouver rentals still most expensive in Canada, down 7.7% YoY in July: report

“The highest rent for shared accommodations is $1,211 a month. So, even if you have a roommate in British Columbia, you’re paying about $1,200 a month. In Vancouver, almost $1,500 a month for a roommate,” he explained.

And while it’s still a lot of money, Ladas explains it’s about half of what you’d pay if you were to rent on your own.

“You’re not doubling the rent, but in theory, you can make your rent half because you can share it,” he said.

While Vancouver remains the most expensive place in the country to rent, the rental agency says markets across B.C. are catching up.

“These secondary markets, we might be seeing a point in time where even these are now becoming too expensive, as they’re matching their Vancouver and Toronto counterparts,” he explained.

According to Rentals.ca, Burnaby is the second most expensive place in the country to rent. Surrey came in at number five, and Kelowna rounded out the top 10.
