Restaurant Review: Flora-Bama Yacht Club

The Flora-Bama is hardly a hidden gem. Visitors to the Gulf Coast have been enjoying their cocktails and shots for more than 50 years. The bar on the state line definitely gets its share of the millions of tourists who visit the Alabama beaches each year. We natives either go regularly or avoid it completely, depending on what we consider a good time.

What is surprising, however, is the cuisine served up at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club just across the street from the original bar. Since the restaurant’s opening four years ago, Chef Chris Sherrill has been sourcing high quality local seafood and produce and preparing dishes in a way that is rarely seen at casual beach establishments. The menu features Southern coastal fare, with something for every taste and budget. Amid staples, such as fried shrimp platters and oyster po’boys, there are items such as Hawaiian-inspired yellowfin tuna poke, grilled shrimp nachos on crisp wonton chips, unusual fish options (tripletail, for example) and seasonal vegetables.

The extra steps taken in the kitchen set this place apart from the rest of the sandy shacks. Chef Sherrill makes his own shrimp stock for the base of his gumbo, and he then steals ladles of the finished gumbo broth to turn his plain rice into a creamy, Cajun risotto-like side dish. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the “you hook ’em, we cook ’em” menu option, and it can’t possibly get fresher than that.

From the get-go, Sherrill wanted to create a place that was unpretentious and relaxed, where guests could enjoy fine dining in their flip-flops. You can’t beat the view overlooking Old River toward the homes of Ono Island with paddle boarders and dolphins passing by. On jam-packed holiday weekends, the little beach at the Yacht Club is two boats deep with folks ordering up cocktails and enjoying the afternoon. But at other times, the place is as relaxing as it gets. A few kids dig in the sand while grown-ups relax in Adirondack chairs with their toes in the water. Lunch is long over, and yet they are unable to climb into the car; the urge to unwind is too strong. Huge sun sails stretch over the sandy patio area, providing shade and mirroring the colors of the sea in architectural angles. Music wafts from the outdoor stage seven days a week in season, and cafe lights twinkle above. Not much to complain about here.

Chef Sherrill, a member of MB’s current class of Forty Under 40 , is a bottomless pit of energy who works long hours in the kitchen, competes in and promotes numerous chef cook-offs, and almost single-handedly lured the World Food Championships to the Alabama Gulf Coast. As if that wasn’t enough, he also cofounded the nonprofit NUISANCE Group with fellow chefs to promote the use of underutilized, invasive, so-called trash seafood. That’s about as local and sustainable as it gets.

Perhaps a fruity goombay smash cocktail and deep-fried shrimp are just what the doctor ordered for your vacation, or perhaps you seek something a little lighter and more refined. Either way (and we do love ’em both), the Flora-Bama Yacht Club should hit the spot for your next trip to the beach.

On the Menu

Greek Shrimp Nachos This creative take on traditional snack food hits every flavor note. It’s a colorful platter of grilled Gulf shrimp over crispy wonton chips drizzled with decadent spinach feta cream sauce. The chef adds in some salty feta crumbles, peppadews, banana peppers, tomatoes, olives and more to create a rich and decidedly Mediterranean taste.

Yellowfin Tuna Poke Fresh Gulf yellowfin tuna is chopped and marinated in a sweet and spicy sesame soy chili vinaigrette, then drizzled with wasabi cream and hoisin sauce. With a big pile of wonton chips on the side for scooping, there’s plenty to share and lots to love about this dish.

Blackened Gulf Tripletail A favorite local fish, tripletail (or blackfish) is blackened and served over creamy Cajun dirty rice that Chef Sherrill prepares like a risotto. Throw in some seasonal vegetables with tasty grill marks and finish it with an “Orleans” sauce, and you’ve got a fresh but hearty dish with plenty of smoky flavor.

Beignet Fries Fresh beignet dough is sliced thin and deep fried to perfection. This lily is then gilded three-fold with a dusting of powdered sugar, a drizzle of white chocolate ganache and a smattering of caramel sauce. These addictive dessert fries are over the top.

Flora-Bama Yacht Club • 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Su – Th, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. F – Sa  17350 Perdido Key Drive, Perdido Key, Florida. 850-483-6272  Average entree price: $16

The Best Steak On The Border: Flora-Bama Yacht Club

The Alabama Gulf Coast is a foodie lover’s paradise and the Florida/Alabama border is no exception. Here is where you will find the Flora-Bama Yacht Club, and I had the best steak on the border of anywhere I have ever dined. My steak was cooked to perfection and the flavor was to die for.

Flora Bama Yacht Club Steak

The menu consists of fish, chicken and about anything your heart desires, including dessert!

Do you have a special event coming up? Work with the talented chefs of the Flora-Bama Yacht Club to prepare your menu and your guests will leave wanting to return as quickly as possible.

From indoor to outdoor seating, there’s a place to sit for your liking.

outdoor seating Flora-Bama Yacht Club

The one thing that I noticed is that if you don’t look beyond the walls, you will possibly drive right on by. If you are not familiar with this area, you will see it as a “dive” and more than likely keep going. And again, it was proved to me that those dives offer some of the best food on the planet.

Flora-Bama Yacht Club Sign

The world famous Flora-Bama bar is located right across the road from the Flora-Bama Yacht Club. Here is where you can partake in several annual events such as the Mullet Man Triathlon, the Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo and the Frank Brown International Songwriter’s Festival . And it just so happened that the annual songwriter’s festival was going on during my visit. A little music, a little fun and a great meal across the road, you can’t beat the experience.

Flora Bama Plates

I had the opportunity to meet some of the songwriter’s and even listen to a few tunes. If you have never set foot in the Flora-Bama Bar, this is a good reason to visit. And if you are so inclined, you can even toss a bra over the clothes line and add it to the ever growing line of bras.

Flora-Bama Bar Area

Flora-Bama is also home to many activities all year long. From BINGO, daily live music and even church on Sunday, this is your go to place on the Florida/Alabama state line.

When you visit the Alabama Gulf Coast , there is simply no time to be bored. Once you have enjoyed a day on the beach , head on over to the Florida/Alabama state line and experience a meal that you will want to keep returning for at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club.

*Thank you to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama for hosting me.

15 things to know about the Flora-Bama: Music, food, church and more

Portrait of Mary Hance

Flora-Bama is many things: a beach bar, honky-tonk, restaurant, songwriter venue, concert destination, marina, package store, bingo parlor and even a church.

It started 55 years ago as a lowly state-line dive and liquor store that was hoping to take advantage of thirsty customers from Florida and Alabama.

Here are 15 interesting tidbits about this iconic coastal landmark :

How Flora-Bama started

In 1962, the state of Florida gave the state of Alabama two miles of beachfront land in exchange for the construction of the Perdido Pass Bridge. In 1964, the enterprising Tampary family opened the Flora-Bama as a small bar and package store on the new state line, hoping to capitalize on the fact that Escambia County, Florida, was "wet" and Baldwin County, Alabama, was "dry" for alcohol sales.

Joseph Gilchrist purchased it in 1978 and added daily live music and songwriters. Pat McClellan became a partner in 1986, and they began to create events like the Interstate Mullet Toss and the Frank Brown Songwriter's Festival. There are now four partners with John McInnis and Cameron Price joining in 2009.

Flora-Bama offers live music between 11 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., but hours vary at the five stages. Performers include locals, songwriters and up-and-comers. Big names who have played Flora-Bama include Jimmy Buffett, Billy Currington and John Rich. There was a free Kenny Chesney concert on the Flora-Bama beach in 2014 that drew 40,000 people and 400 boats.  Coming up is a beach concert featuring Justin Moore and Easton Corbin on Sept. 1.

FLORA-BAMA: Why the iconic Gulf Coast beach bar is worth putting on your bucket list

Multiple venues

Flora-Bama consists of multiple venues on a sprawling piece of property on both sides of Perdido Key Drive just inside Florida at the Florida-Alabama state line.

During the day, all ages are welcome at the main Flora-Bama bar and restaurant complex on the Gulf side, but after 6 p.m., it is restricted to guests 18 and older; and there is a $5 cover charge. The Yacht Club and Ole River Grill across the street are family-friendly all the time and never have a cover charge. Kids meals in all of the restaurants are about $6.

Church services

Sunday church services are at 9 and 11 a.m. in the Tent bar and are live streamed in overflow areas, including the Bra bar. The services, led by Pastor Dan Stone, draw 500-700 people each. The church, whose theme is "it's okay to not be okay" is part of Central Christian out of Las Vegas.

And yes, you may enjoy an adult beverage during the service.

Domestic draft beers are $3.75. At the Oyster Bar and Grill, the Bama burger with fries is $12; a dozen oysters is $13; a fried shrimp basket is $11; and a half pound of peel and eat shrimp is $12. The food is served "grab and go," so you can eat anywhere you want. Menu prices vary at the Yacht Club and Old River Grill. The most expensive item I saw on any of the menus was a hand cut certified Angus ribeye for $28.

Best-selling booze

Flora-Bama uses a system that pumps the liquors from a central location to each bar through lines like the casinos in Las Vegas. Its best-selling drink is the Bushwacker, a $7.50 "adult frozen milkshake" which contains five types of liquor. The best-selling vodka is Nashville's own Pickers Vodka, which goes into 250,000 Flora-Bama drinks a year.

There is lively bingo from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are usually 100 players of all ages, and prizes include gift cards, toys, and other items from local merchants.

Songwriter festival

The Frank Brown International Songwriter Festival, named for an early Flora-Bama night watchman, features more than 250 award-winning performers, singing songs and telling the stories behind them. The 35th annual festival is Nov. 7-17.

Oddball events include the annual Interstate Mullet Toss in April, where competitors throw dead mullet across the Alabama-Florida state line; the Polar Bear Plunge typically attracts about 5,000 people who get the new year started by running into the frigid Gulf; Santa landing on the beach via helicopter at Christmastime; the Easter Bunny making a similar grand entrance and hiding eggs on the beach; a Fishing Rodeo; and an annual Chili Cook-off. Coming up is the Miss Flora-Bama Bikini Contest Finale on Aug. 31.

Getting there

Flora-Bama offers shuttle service from Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Perdido Key and Pensacola for as little as $5 per person each way.

Hurricane destruction

When Hurricane Ivan hit in 2004, the main Flora-Bama building was severely damaged. It was one of the first coastal businesses to reopen, operating for years out of tents and trailers on the original site. It was rebuilt on two levels in 2010.

The Flora-Bama Yacht Club opened in 2013 and the Ole River Grill in 2015 on the Intracoastal Waterway across the street from the main Flora-Bama. Patrons can pull their boats up on the sand or into slips to enjoy food, drink and music.

Dog-friendly

The Flora-Bama Yacht Club and Ole River Grill are pet friendly, so you can take your dog on a leash.

Longtime staff

The Flora-Bama employs as many as 500 workers during the Memorial Day and Labor Day high season. At other times of year, it might be 250 people. More than half of the management team has been there for 20 years or more. Management refers to its security workers as "customer service" employees.

Environmentally responsible

Flora-Bama strives to be environmentally responsible. It has a 9,000 gallon cistern that collects rain water that is used to flush the complex's more than 50 toilets. It also recycles thousands of beer cans (using the proceeds to pay for employee outings), uses biodegradable straws and plates and participates in an oyster shell recycling program.

These local Gulf Shores and Orange Beach restaurants are pet-friendly on their outdoor porches.

Alabama law prohibits dogs from dining inside a restaurant with their owners. The law does allow restaurants that have a separate outdoor entrance to choose to allow dogs.

Restaurants are supposed to display a sign designating where dogs are allowed. Dogs cannot use chairs, benches, seats, or other fixtures.

Dogs must be on a leash or in a pet carrier at the restaurant. Restaurant owners must elect to allow dogs in their outdoor dining area and apply for a waiver.

These are our favorite Gulf Shores and Orange Beach restaurants with dog-friendly patio options. Alabama's Gulf Coast is the perfect vacation for the entire family. Yes, we count pets as part of the family.

We are a cat family but love dogs also.

The Must-Visit Panoramic-View Restaurant in Orange Beach, Alabama

CoastAL became the first beachfront restaurant in Orange Beach, Alabama, in 2023, rolling out like a luxurious beach blanket before the most spectacular views.

Written by

As the first beachfront restaurant in Orange Beach, Alabama, CoastAL rolled out in 2023 like a luxurious beach towel before spectacular Gulf views. The restaurant and bar's fresh local seafood, colorful cocktails, live music, and an upscale, modern vibe now greet beachgoers almost immediately in what was already one of the best coastal beach towns in the country.

alt

A happy twist? Had it not been for a private/public partnership between the city and business founders, people would be seeing a 600-unit condo tower there instead. During the COVID pandemic, Flora-Bama part-owners John McInnis and Cameron Price worked with the city of Orange Beach to split the purchase of 800 acres. Situated at the major intersection of Beach Road and Highway 161, it's less than a mile west of the state-owned Cotton Bayou Public Beach Access.

The deal meant Orange Beach residents got their first city-owned beach, including a designated parking area and access for city residents only. (Don't worry if you're not a resident! There's plenty of space for non-residents to park and enjoy the restaurant, bar, and retail store.) Meanwhile, visitors and locals alike have been loving the entertainment, food, and other amenities of CoastAL.

alt

The restaurant and bar combine indoor and outdoor seating and regularly hosts local artists to perform live music. Enjoy the beach breezes, tunes, and a refreshing drink as you peruse a menu full of the Gulf's bounty – fresh grouper, mahi-mahi, red snapper, shrimp, and blue crab dishes galore.

Oyster lovers will be especially happy here. CoastAL sources them from Island Time Oyster Farm in nearby Dauphin Island. Preparations include raw on the half shell; traditional baked with garlic, butter, and parm; baked with pimento cheese, jalapeno relish, and bacon crumbles; or topped with roasted red pepper cream and smoked gouda.

alt

If you're craving something other than seafood, you can count on fresh and Southern-sourced ingredients in these dishes, too. Turkey is brined and smoked in-house before it's layered into a scrumptious club sandwich with cherrywood smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and avocado mayo. The restaurant's beef comes from Texas and shows up in signature burgers as well as dinner entree options of filet or bone-in ribeye.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to close (which varies), CoastAL Restaurant serves breakfast and brunch until dinner service begins at 4 p.m. CoastAL Beach Bar opens at 11 a.m. No reservations taken or needed. If there's a wait, you can always hang out and admire the views from the boardwalk or go for retail therapy in the huge beach lifestyle apparel and merch shop, CoastAL Clothing Company.

alt

You can view the full menus and live music calendar on the CoastAL Orange Beach website stay tuned for news on the Coastal Orange Beach Facebook page. While this new gathering space for locals and visitors evolved from a property originally slated for condos; there are plenty of great ones ready for you nearby. Check out this guest-favorite beachfront Orange Beach condo rental that's practically next door to CoastAL and the Cotton Bayou Public Beach Access.

Dine For Less Than $10 a Person at This Iconic Hot Dog Stand in Alabama

Get cheap, iconic, hall-of-fame level food at Dew Drop Inn, a timeless hot dog stand in Mobile, Alabama.

While sticking to a small town isn't always the most exciting option, it only makes it better when you find affordable places that pack a lot of value. It's even more satisfying when it's a restaurant serving "hall of fame" level, iconic food . You get both with the Dew Drop Inn, a hot dog stand in Mobile, Alabama, the city's oldest restaurant. At this classic spot that celebrated its 100th birthday in 2024, many things on the menu are below $10 ... with plenty of options even less than $5.

alt

Dew Drop Inn is a great place for lunch before or after visiting the popular Mobile Carnival Museum about 2.5 miles east toward the Mobile River. It's such a great place for lunch that readers of the local weekly newspaper, Lagniappe , named it the best lunch spot for 2024. People love the food almost as much as the camaraderie of the staff led by owner Powell Hamlin, named the "Quintessential Mobilian" in the same 2024 Nappie Awards. Hamlin has been at the helm since 1991, and as a longtime employee described him, he's a tireless advocate for the community, from other small businesses to youth sports groups, charity events, and city celebrations.

alt

While musician Jimmy Buffett said his well-documented love for cheeseburgers started here while growing up in Mobile, hot dogs hands-down are the signature item at Dew Drop Inn. The OG version comes with chili, sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, and a pickle slice. Options for how you want them served include regular, with the weiner on the bottom; upside-down, with the weiner on the top; shaved, which is without sauerkraut; and female, with all but the weiner. Each hot dog is $4.30, and you could pair it with a large order of steak fries or small onion rings ($5.35 for either) and come in under $10 for your meal.

A cup of the soup of the day is only $4.75, and a whole bowl is only a dollar more. Many customers crave the Dew Drop Inn homemade gumbo as much as anything else, and you can grab a bowl of it for $9.85 or a cup for $8.45. If you're wondering about those Buffett-beloved burgers, a single with chili, mustard, and ketchup is $4.60; add cheese for 35 cents. A corn dog is only $3.98, and a grilled cheese is even less, at $3.55.

alt

While the many different sandwich plates will set you back a little more than $10 each (some by only 98 cents) you get your money's worth, plus they all come with fries. You can see the full, most current menu on the Dew Drop Inn Facebook page. The cheap eats free up a little cash, so why not check out the restaurant's merch and take home a souvenir to remember your visit? Or perhaps you're already part of the loyal following for this legendary hot dog stand in Mobile, Alabama. If so, tell us all about your regular order!

A 1930s-Era Generations Old Neighborhood Building Is Now Alabama’s Best New Casual Seafood Restaurant

Find fresh Gulf Coast seafood, a side of history, and fish-camp vibes at Magnolia Point, a casual seafood restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama.

For fresh Gulf Coast seafood, a side of history, and a fun, casual vibe, check out one of Southside's newest eateries, Magnolia Point. This casual seafood restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama, may be in the middle of the state and not the beach or fish camp, but it sure goes hard after those moods and flavors.

It's clear Magnolia Point is using the right lures to catch on. Don't just take my word for it: Excellent customer reviews began pouring in the first week after opening. From comments like "10/10 overall score" to raving over the "incredible" food and "most attentive" staff in town, Magnolia Point is a must-try for Magic City food explorers and convenient for a day trip for most folks in the state.

Magnolia Point is the latest offering of Pihakis Restaurant Group, known for other successful Southern food brands like Rodney Scott's BBQ, HERO, Little Donkey, Tasty Town, and Luca Lagotto – the latter having opened in February 2024. PRG partnered with Alabama Business Hall of Famer Michael Mouron on the Magnolia Point venture, which opened six months later.

Here's some background on the restaurant, what you should expect, and what to order.

You'll find Magnolia Point at the corner of Magnolia Avenue and 23rd Street South in the bustling Southside area. The building's history adds to the charm, as it's been a neighborhood staple for generations. Most notably, it hasn't always looked so lovely, having been covered in siding for many years.

alt

You really would not recognize the building now compared to older photos. The renovation had to have felt like pulling up ugly carpet to find pristine hardwoods – in this case, original 1930s architecture and pretty brick, including the building's trademark name spelled out in raised brickwork on the facades that front the cross streets.

The food focus is on fresh, Gulf Coast seafood, prepared in just about every way you can imagine – from fried fish platters and blackened shrimp to peel-and-eat shrimp and rich gumbo.

alt

The giant po'boys do not skimp on authenticity, with bread straight from New Orleans' famous Leidenheimer Baking Company. Zooming out from the seafood options, you'll find that Magnolia Point has plenty of other tasty choices, like salads, burgers, wings, and a New York strip with a choice of two sides for the extra-hungry.

alt

And let's not forget the cold beer, wine, and fantastic cocktails to complement your meal. The shareable fishbowl cocktails were an instant hit. Folks are welcome to just drop in for drinks and light bites, like the black-eyed pea hummus, jalapeño cheddar hushpuppies, or a slice of key lime or coconut pie.

alt

With the flavors of the beach locked in, Magnolia Point took care to create an atmosphere that's as inviting and laid back. Somewhat sleek and refined with modern touches, there's still nothing stuffy about the dining room – and especially not the spacious, pup-friendly patio equipped with TVs for sports fans.

alt

The bar area feels even more refreshing and natural with lots of light, high ceilings, cozy booths, and a live-edge wooden bar top made from a huge magnolia tree that fell in Tuscaloosa.

alt

Another special touch to this restaurant is its mural emblazoned across its back wall honoring a local legend, the late "Batman" Willie Perry, who passed in 1985. Perry was known for piloting his brightly lit and decorated 1971 Ford Thunderbird he called the "Rescue Ship" doing exactly that – assisting stranded motorists.

alt

At the time of the mural's unveiling, Perry's daughter told local news station WBRC that she hoped it would inspire people to consider how "Every day can be a Willie Perry day," and carry on his spirit of helping their neighbors however they can.

We think you'll enjoy visiting this new casual seafood restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama. Let us know when you go and what you think! You can see the whole menu on the Magnolia Point website and keep up with the latest news and specials on the Magnolia Point Facebook page.

While you're in the Birmingham area, take advantage of Viator's multi-attraction pass for savings on admission when exploring all the Magic City has to offer.
