8 Reasons to Host a Corporate Event on a Party Yacht

A party yacht is a unique and impressive venue that can help you make a lasting impression on your guests. Whether you’re hosting a client appreciation event or the perfect team-building experience , a corporate event on a party yacht can help you create a unique experience that your guests won’t soon forget.

What is a corporate party?

Typically held in a traditional office setting, hotel or conference center, corporate events are meant to evoke collaboration and team bonding. Unfortunately, these types of events can become cliche or disingenuous when the event lacks imagination or effort. Don’t put your corporate event on autopilot.

At FantaSea Yachts, we’ve hosted thousands of corporate events including business mixers, luncheons, sunset cocktail cruises, incentive programs and organizational celebrations. There is no better place than Marina del Rey to book a yacht party rental and to sit back, relax, and toast your teammates.

Still not sure if your company will be impressed? Here are 8 reasons why your next corporate event should be on the water.

1. Unforgettable Corporate Event Experiences on the Water

Party yachts offer a unique setting for corporate events. Unlike traditional venues, yachts provide stunning views of the surrounding water and a unique sense of adventure that is sure to impress your guests.

Marina del Rey is known for its calm waters and natural beauty. It is also home to plenty of marine wildlife including dolphins!

2. Exclusive and Private Setting

One of the biggest advantages of hosting a corporate event on a party yacht is the exclusive and private setting it provides.

From the moment you step onto the yacht, the entire space is yours. No sharing the wall with another event; no confusion with the meeting down the hall and no risk of a stranger (aka crasher) disrupting your event.

Our yachts are not only private and secure, but offer ample space and the flexibility to customize the area to fit your needs — no matter if it’s a full-scale corporate bash or a smaller, more intimate affair.

This means that you can focus on your event and ensure that your guests have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Plus, the privacy of a party yacht also allows for confidential conversations and meetings to take place in a secure environment.

34% of employees shared that they have had their most creative ideas on company or executive retreats . Incorporate the yacht experience into your creative process.

3. Flexible Event Spaces

Our  yachts are designed to accommodate a wide range of events, from intimate gatherings to large-scale corporate events.

We have three yachts in our fleet: the Dandeana , FantaSea One and the Admiral XL . Depending on which yacht you choose, we offer a variety of event spaces, including indoor and outdoor areas, that can be customized to meet your specific needs.

Whether you’re hosting a cocktail party, a team-building exercise, or a formal dinner, a party yacht can provide the flexibility and versatility you need to create a successful event space.

4. Dedicated Event Planner and Service

Booking your yacht party with FantaSea Yachts means that you’ll have a dedicated event planner every step of the way AND a five-star hospitality crew experienced in private LA yacht charters .

True story:  we’re experts at turning your ideas into reality.

A couple of years back, one of our clients was intrigued by the notion of hosting a promotional event on the water. However, our client was also apprehensive and likely a little overwhelmed. Fortunately, after an in depth brainstorming session with the client, we were able to alleviate their concerns and provide a comprehensive breakdown of how the event would unfold.

So,  with over 40 years of experience, our event team is equipped to provide a comfortable, customized and productive setting. We execute your vision and coordinate logistics, details and vendors (think linens, floral arrangements, photo booths, entertainment and more).

Dreaming up a themed party? We can help with that, too. We’ve seen and done it all from beach-themed bashes and masquerade balls to winter wonderland holiday parties and tech-focused events — not to mention popular activities like whiskey tastings, cigar stations and cornhole.

Planning an epic corporate yacht party is easy when you have help.

5. Professional Catering and Service

Another advantage of hosting a corporate event on a party yacht is the professional catering and service that is available. At FantaSea Yachts we  have experienced chefs and service staff on board who can provide high-quality food and drinks that are tailored to your event. This means that you can focus on your guests and the event itself, while the yacht’s staff takes care of the rest.

Memorable and Impressive Impressions; you’ll be showing your guests that you value their experience and are willing to go the extra mile to create an unforgettable event.

6. Budget Flexibility with a Party Yacht Rental

Having a firm handle on your budget will help to successfully achieve your event goals. We’re by your side to solidify your budget, determine the scope of your event,  and discuss options, from entertainment to menu. Yacht party prices are customized based on your event parameter.

7. Unwind and Relax on a Party Yacht

For many people, being on a party yacht can be a welcome break from the stress and routine of the office. The sound of the waves, the sea breeze, and the beautiful scenery can create a sense of calm and relaxation that can help to reduce anxiety and improve mental wellbeing.

Corporate event space on a yacht in Marina del Rey

Hosting a corporate event on a yacht can provide a unique opportunity for attendees to enjoy these benefits. It can be a chance for them to take a break from their work and other responsibilities, and to focus on themselves for a while.

This can have a positive impact on their overall job satisfaction and productivity, as people return to work feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Additionally, it can help to create a positive association between your company and the experience of relaxation and wellbeing, which can be beneficial for your brand image and reputation.

Make impressing your team part of your employee retention strategy.

8. The Location for Los Angeles Team Building Events

We’re located four miles north of LAX , making it easy for satellite employees to hop on a plane, jump in a cab and participate with the rest of the team. Who needs Skype or Zoom when you have a direct line to an accessible international airport?

As a special-event company, FantaSea Yachts has elevated the experience of yacht charters and rentals to new heights. With 40 years of delivering exceptional attention and service to our clients, we have become widely recognized as the top choice for unforgettable celebrations in California.

Corporate Yacht Charters

A corporate yacht charter provides the perfect platform to showcase your brand. Whether you’re looking for a location for your next meeting, need a location for a corporate afterparty, or want to impress new clients, a luxury charter yacht is a sophisticated choice for your next corporate event.

Corporate yacht charters provide it all: amazing 5-star service, chef-prepared culinary options, spectacular backdrops, and the best in privacy.

Considering a yacht charter for your next corporate event? This guide offers a quick introduction.

Corporate Yacht Charters: Type of Events

A luxury yacht charter can be adapted to fit nearly any type of corporate event, including:

  • Meetings & Conferences

A charter yacht provides the perfect environment for intimate client meetings and conferences. By hosting your conference on a charter yacht, not only will you be sure to make an impression, but you can also customize your itinerary for the day. Take your guests out for a day on the water, or entertain guests near a larger meeting or venue.

Larger superyachts can accommodate 100 guests or more, with an option for onboard lodging. In terms of entertaining, you have numerous options. All yachts provide interior and exterior spaces that are ideal for entertaining clients and guests with al fresco luncheons and sunset cocktail hours.

Plus, your yacht can be transformed into a working space, with onboard Wi-Fi, telephone access and onboard workstations.

  • Product Launches

Hosting a product launch is all about creating buzz, and an A-list venue like a luxury charter yacht can help you generate social media mentions and positive PR. A yacht provides the perfect backdrop to showcase your product. Take influencers, journalists and other media on a sunset cruise before the “big reveal,” or host an afternoon luncheon for VIPs.

The onboard chef can design a menu that accentuates your brand or product, and the crew will be on-hand to provide excellent service to all your guests. Another option: Charter a yacht near a larger convention or trade show, and invite back influencers and journalists for your exclusive event.

  • Corporate Afterparties

A glitzy afterparty can be a powerful marketing tool for your business, and a luxury superyacht is the classiest of venues. A private afterparty is perfect following festivals, conventions and tradeshows and sporting events.

For example, yacht charter afterparties are popular in Cannes after the Cannes International Film Festival, and in Monaco after the Grand Prix. A private afterparty can be a great way to attract clients, following trade shows and conventions, as well.

  • Team Building & Employee Incentives

Want to reward your best salespeople, or host an unforgettable team-building cruise? A corporate yacht charter makes perfect sense. You can host a day- or weeklong cruise for an excellent team-building experience. Or host an intimate employee appreciation event on board like a cocktail hour, an overnight cruise, or upscale dinner.

Why Yacht Charters Are Perfect for Corporate Events

  • Privacy & Exclusivity

A chartered yacht provides an intimate and completely private experience. Your guests will be the only individuals welcomed aboard, and the docking location can be selected for seclusion. Plus, you can take to the water for added privacy.

  • Custom Menus & Service

No need to work with caterers! You’ll have access to an onboard chef who can craft a menu that fits your event perfectly. Whether you prefer an intimate dinner, or prefer hors d’oeuvres, your chef can make it happen. Plus, you’ll have an onboard crew to make your guests feel welcome.

  • Comfortable Accommodations

Luxury yachts are designed for maximum comfort, and most are remodeled every few years. That means you can expect modern furnishings and décor. Plus, there’s plenty of spaces to entertain: Sundecks, aft decks, interior saloons, dining rooms, entertainment rooms.

Finally, if you’re hosting a multi-day event, the staterooms and cabins aboard a yacht offer the best-of-the-best in accommodations.

  • Convenience

When hiring a yacht for your corporate event, you have a team in place that’s there to serve you: A captain to design your itinerary, a chef, interior service crews, and exterior crews. That means you don’t have to coordinate between multiple vendors to host your event.

Not to mention, every detail is flexible, from the yacht’s location to the menus and guestlists.

Corporate Meetings on a Yacht

Corporate Meetings - New York Yacht Lexington

Does it sound unusual to have a corporate meeting on a luxury yacht? It is. The concept provides your clients and prospects with a unique and imaginative alternative to dreary conference rooms and a catered lunch. Making that big presentation on a private yacht provides de facto evidence of your out-of-the-box thinking and puts your prospects at ease in an environment usually reserved for the rich and famous.

As an event planner, I have witnessed the persuasive effect of treating your guests to magnificent panoramic views combined with gourmet cuisine, lively entertainment and attentive professional service. I have also seen carefully planned business meetings flop when prospects become bored with PowerPoint slides and traditional luncheon fare.

Cruise Landmarks

Luxury surrounds you as you gently cruise New York Harbor in Lady Liberty's shadow. For evening gatherings, the lights of landmark bridges sparkle like diamonds against the backdrop of the New York skyline. Your prospects will always remember the experience, and your competitors will appear drab by comparison.

To further impress your associates, special trips are available to temporary art projects. This summer, cruises will offer an up-close view of the New York City Waterfalls, designed by Copenhagen-born artist, Olafur Eliasson. The falls will be lit after sunset to create an illuminated fountain effect. Another project this October, 100 glowing tents on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, will commemorate 100 patients confined to a smallpox hospital at that location during the 19th century. The array of illuminated tents will be visible at night from the water as well as the East Side of Manhattan.

Planning Your Event

A variety of yachts may be selected to fit any size or type of event. Elegant outings may be planned with your associates' favorite cuisine served outdoors or sitting at tables. If you are celebrating a new partnership, you can arrange a champagne reception. Other options include cocktail hour with high-end passed hors d'oeuvres, a seafood bar, a gourmet pasta or imaginative salad station, or a carving board for roast beef, turkey, quail or exotic game.

For combined business and social gatherings, a band can play music of any genre with dancing under the stars to enthrall your spouses. Depending on your client's preferences, some charters even offer a professional casino

Choosing a Chartering Company

Established chartering companies offer a vast selection of vessels to accommodate any-sized business and its budget. Ships vary from formal, elegant yachts to casual party boats with sleek modern profiles or more classical lines. The best chartering companies will offer interior and exterior photos of their entire fleet on a comprehensive web site.

Depending on the company you select, different points of departure may be available.. Docking facilities are located in all boroughs of New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester and Long Island.

When evaluating a yacht chartering company, make sure its ships are all weather-enclosed with sheltered decks, and climate-controlled with air conditioning and heating. The yachts should be large and stable, and cruise the calm, protected waters of New York Harbor and Long Island Sound to ensure your guests' ultimate comfort.

For the professionally-inclined, some chartering companies offer the latest A/V facilities. Prospects on a yacht are a captive audience for any presentation, and your competitors may struggle for months to achieve a similar opportunity.

Choosing where to host your meeting can make the difference between success and failure. Think back to business meetings you have attended and try to evaluate them.

Chances are most of them will be indistinguishable from one another. Only the faces changed. Contrast that with a business meeting aboard a yacht. The comparison speaks for itself.

PERFECT FOR A PROFESSIONAL EVENT

The majority of the boats we provide have state of the art audiovisual equipment so presentations can be shown easily, and versatile layouts to accommodate guests in different configurations. After being in business meetings all day it’s always would be nice to experience something unique with your invitees by getting a change of scenery: a dinner cruise on a smart comfortable modern yacht will always be the highlight of their trip to S. Florida.

As mentioned before we can plan and accommodate board meetings, sales meetings, breakfast, lunch, or dinner cruises, product promotions, team building, and even reward ceremonies . A when boarding one of our boats, begins with a “welcome aboard drink”, and then shown to the (in most cases) open top deck where you can get a view of the beautiful scenery with the spectacular back-drop of the city of Miami.

After that, the guests are invited to the other decks where you can mingle and have some drinks with your colleagues, usually about an hour long. And of course you have the option of doing presentations or team building exercise, then dinner will take place. After dinner is when you can relax with the people around you, a great advantage of having your corporate meeting on one of our boats is the atmosphere can be relaxing, and you have a captive audience.

Some groups prefer a morning brunch or lunch cruise with non-alcoholic beverages. This is a preferred business-type cruise when there are a lot of business topics and material to cover. Business sessions can be held both in the morning, followed by a light lunch and other topics in the afternoon, etc. As we mentioned before, the advantage is that you have a captive audience and great scenery during the break-outs.

The cruises typically stay in the Intra-Coastal waterway and its extensions and tributaries and also in Biscayne Bay all of which are in protected or semi protected waters. So everything is calm and there are no waves, no rocking and no sea-sickness. The corporate party yachts that we provide range from 25 guests to 600. For larger capacity can use more than one vessel.

All the commercial party boats we provide are inspected annually by the US Coastguard and have an up-to-date USCG Certificate of Inspection. All are covered with their own liability insurance of up to $1,000,000 although many corporations prefer to supplement this by purchasing insurance of their own which is relatively inexpensive to do.

There are numerous possible pick-up locations in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas. In Miami these include Bayfront Park, Miami Beach Marina, Sea Isle Marina, the Epic Hotel and the Hyatt Hotels in downtown. Further north we can pick up at Haul-over Marina in Bal Harbour and the Westin Diplomat dock in Hallandale.

Pick-up Locations : Fort Lauderdale include Pier 66 hotel, the Bahia Mar Marina, the New River, and many others. The South Florida area is always better and more interesting from the water. Give your corporate clients a treat with something different. We can work directly with you, the corporation or with your planners or travel agencies, both in-house and contracted. Give us a call, we can usually find you the perfect yacht in the perfect place at the perfect time.

Right-of-Way Rules for Boaters

  • By Jeff Hemmel
  • April 20, 2022

Head-on rule for boaters

There is no right of way on the water. Every boater is obligated to do what is required to avoid collision. In any meeting of boats, one is deemed the stand-on vessel and the other the give-way vessel. The rules of the road explain the situation more completely and can be learned in a boating safety course. This article serves as a refresher and a reminder on how to handle some common meeting scenarios.

While more common in a channel or narrow pass, head-to-head meetings can happen anywhere on the water. When encountering an oncoming boat head-on, the rule is simple: Each boat is a give-way or burdened vessel and should stay to its right, altering course to starboard and allowing each craft to pass to the port (left) side of the other boat.

Give way rule for boaters

If the other boat is to your starboard (right), it’s considered the stand-on or privileged vessel and is obligated to maintain course and speed. Your boat is the give-way vessel and is obligated to slow or alter course to pass behind it, ideally. If the boat intersecting your path is to port (left), it’s the give-way vessel. It’s obligated to yield while you’re obligated to maintain course and speed.

When overtaking another boat, keep in mind that the other boat is the stand-on vessel and yours is the give-way vessel. Your first move? Determine to which side of that craft is the safest to pass. Consider oncoming traffic, waterway markers, obstacles, or even bends in the channel. Once you have a clear path with good forward visibility, increase your speed enough so that you can safely overtake the other vessel, giving the craft a wide berth.

Horn rules for passing boats

Encountering Kayaks, Sailboats, Etc.

Some vessels will almost always be the stand-on boat, and you must yield no matter the scenario, unless doing so will create an unsafe situation. Typically, this list includes paddlecraft and sailboats not under power, but it also includes larger craft, like ships or freighters. Realize these craft are not as maneuverable as most powerboats and, as such, the powerboat is deemed the give-way vessel.

When the Other Guy Doesn’t Know the Rules

No matter if you are the stand-on or give-way vessel, always be prepared in case the other boater doesn’t respond as you expect. Operate defensively, and be ready to yield, slow speed or change course to avoid any potentially dangerous situation. A good tip? Give other boaters plenty of space—100 feet or more—to allow enough time and distance to properly react and avoid an accident.

Know Your Colors

Do you know how to handle these scenarios at night, when you can’t see another boat, let alone determine its direction? Know your colors. Boats are required to display a green light to starboard (right) and a red light to port (left) at their bow, and most boats must display a single all-around white light at the stern. This combination of lights will help you determine which direction a boat is moving and if it’s likely to cross your path.

What Is a Stand on Vessel? Everything You Should Know!

Written by J. Harvey / Fact checked by S. Numbers

what-is-a-stand-on-vessel

COLREGs or the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea defined two terms to identify vessels that cross paths. Water vessels can be distinguished as stand on and give-way.

This article is mainly about ‘ what is a stand on vessel ’. It’s recognized as the vessel that maintains its speed and course until the give-way vessel doesn’t proceed with the pertinent actions.

If you’re in the stand-on boat, avoid turning towards the give-way craft or crossing in front of it. Various situations may occur when you’re in the waters. So, read on to know more than just the stand on vessel definition.

Table of Contents

How About With Two Power-Driven Boats

Sailing vessels controlled by paddles or oars, 1. crossing paths, 2. meeting head-on, 3. overtaking, stand on vs give way.

You may wonder how to identify or when to act as a stand-on vessel. Generally, you’ll be given the right of way but it’s not absolute because you can have it once it’s safe and possible. Boat operators should always be alert and responsible. They should track the surroundings to execute the right actions and avoid collisions.

Comparing it to a give-way boat is a helpful way. First, you have to know how two vessels that meet are propelled.

  • Two power-driven vessels
  • Two sailing vessels
  • A sailing and power-driven vessel

The manner of approaching each other also varies, such as:

  • Crossing paths: Two vessels cross path with the possibility of collision
  • Meeting Head-on: The driver can see that the other vessel is ahead or almost ahead
  • Overtaking: A vessel is from behind the other vessel or nearly behind

Based on the rule of thumb, the vessel that comes from the port or stern side is the stand-on vessel. When it approaches from the starboard, it’s the give-way vessel. In consideration of vessel type, the power-driven one should be the give-way vessel when approaching a vessel that is unmanned, with restricted maneuverability, or engaging in commercial fishing.

Furthermore, a power-driven vessel should approach in a way that prevents collision from happening. Appropriate action must be observed at the right timing or even earlier.

A sailing vessel is considered the give-way vessel when meeting the vessel that’s unmanned and engages in commercial fishing with restricted maneuverability.

Water vessels that engage in commercial fishing should always see to it that they avoid those that are not under command or with limited maneuverability. You must study the situations around you when sailing.

When you see a boat that moves in water that is shallow for safe passage, give them enough room to navigate. Regardless of circumstances, it’s good to take precautions and execute appropriate actions in advance to prevent accidents. Don’t forget to duly communicate with your fellow boaters as well.

Install trustworthy VHF radios from Uniden, Cobra, and Standard Horizon so you can reach out to sailors you meet and be updated with what happens around you.

There’s a high chance of collision when there are two power-driven boats that both come close at a right angle. But if each act based on their proper roles, mishaps won’t happen. The one that is on the right should be the stand-on vessel.

This vessel is expected to pass through the stern. The other boat should slow, stop, or reverse until the stand-on vessel has taken its chance to pass safely.

Vessels that are not connected with power are expected to be the stand-on vessel when meeting a power-driven or motorboat. In the same situation, the power-driven boat should change the course to pass behind the stand-on vessel.

It’s a different story in the overtaking scenario. Regardless of whether the vessel that overtakes is manually or power-driven maneuvered, the one that overtakes should be the give-way vessel.

The Right Of Way In Various Situations

give-way-vessel

With the photo above as the basis, the vessel shows the green arc to claim its right of way as a stand-on vessel. To do so, a sound signal should be conveyed to the other vessel in times of emergencies and low visibility. You can use a whistle, pealess whistle, and air horn.

This yellow arc is referred to as a danger zone, which reminds another vessel to take precautions. Sailboats and vessels that are manually controlled are favored to have the right of way than the ones with engines. The only exception to this is when those types of vessels are overtaking.

Pleasure boats that are below 20 feet long should be prepared in taking substantial and early actions to give way for vessels that function for commercial fishing. It doesn’t matter whether they’re motor or manual powered.

These pleasure boats are known to have limited maneuverability including their fishing equipment. Large, deep draft vessels can also be the stand-on vessel as they can’t move quickly.

You can usually find them in traffic lanes and narrow water. It’s recommended to stay away from vessels with restricted maneuverability and be in outer limits, specifically on the starboard side.

Here are some rules for sailing vessels that meet head-on:

  • Among two sailboats surrounded by wind from different directions, the one that has the wind on the port side should give way to the other.
  • If both of the vessels have the wind on the same side, the one situated on the windward should give way to the one on the leeward.
  • In the situation where the sailboat having the wind on the port side spotted a vessel to windward with an undetermined wind direction, the former should give way.

The main reason that the terms stand-on and give-way vessels are created is to prevent collisions and accidents. Thus, take note that it’s a crime to take actions at the last minute as they’re equivalent to creating danger.

Vessels don’t have brakes like cars that you can stop any time you want . You steer them from the back and minimum power is essential to keep the steering control.

stand-on-boat

Overtaking another vessel means getting close to its stern. You continually move forward on either side. The vessel that overtakes is the give-way vessel and it must move to ward off collisions.

When overtaking a boat at night, you’ll likely see the stern light of the stand-on vessel instead of the navigation lights. The give-way vessel should take initiative to move around it with caution.

The two vessels should communicate using horns. Seasense, Amarine, FIAMM, and Marinco produce the quality ones. The vessel that overtakes will start to send the signal.

2 shorts blasts = I’d like to overtake you on your port side.

1 short blast = I’d like to overtake you on your starboard side.

If the stand-on vessel agrees with it, it will release the same sound.

Sailing or indulging in water activities is not all about fun. You need to avoid danger rather than getting out of it. You may find yourself confined in a difficult situation with hopelessness so knowing what is a stand on vessel is one of the ways you can traverse the water safely and take precautions.

The Complete Calendar of Big Boat Shows Around the World

Mark your calendars for these yacht shows taking place throughout the year..

Monaco boat show

For yacht lovers, boat shows offer the same experience as any milestone event—they’re memorable, fun, and potentially life-changing. Just ask the tens of thousands of owners around the world who buy new vessels every year at the top shows. Starting with the Cannes Yachting Festival in September and ending with the Newport Yacht Charter Show in June, the show “season” moves around the world, displaying the newest motor yachts at Cannes in September and the world’s largest superyachts at Monaco at the end of the month. From there, the show season moves on to Fort Lauderdale in October, moving month by month around the globe to the world’s major yachting capitals.

Opening days of every boat show share one common feature: The excitement is electric. Not only have the shipyards spent months, and even years, readying new yachts for their public debuts, but the visitors are also excited to finally be stepping aboard yachts they’ve read about and aspire to own. Yachts remain the ultimate discretionary purchase—the one item owners don’t need but often cannot do without. That’s partly because they have become modern, luxury apartments on the water, rivaling any new high-rise condo.

But the main reason people love boats so much is the freedom they offer. No other shoreside home can match a yacht’s portability. Owners can enjoy the world’s richest view of the Monte Carlo skyline, steps away from the city’s shops and restaurants, and then snorkel in an empty cove on a remote Greek island a week later. Take that scenario, transplant it to wherever water exists, and imagine the possibilities. You can see why the boat show has become such a must-attend event for yacht lovers. Here are 16 of the world’s best shows.

It might be the dead of winter, but this is a great time of year to get away to another cold clime and start planning your warm-weather activities.

Boot Düsseldorf

Scheduled for January 19 to 27, 2019, Boot Düsselforf will be celebrating 50 years in 2019, and tickets will go on sale in September. Sixteen exhibition halls spread out over 2,368,060 square feet make up the boat show, which offers up 18 themed areas celebrating all things water. These include the Sailing Center, Motorboats, Superyachts, Travel, the Dive Center, Beach World, the World of Paddling, the Refit Center, and the Sportfishing Center, among others. Watch for superyachts from Azimut, Ferretti, Princess, Fairline, and Sunseeker in the motor-yacht category.

If you prefer sailing, you can check out models from Amel, Bénéteaum, CNB, Nautor’s Swan, Solaris, and more. In addition to the large yachts, tenders for those yachts are on display, as well. If you get tired of touring the yacht halls, head to The Wave for some surfing or the Dive Center for diving. In 2018, 1,923 exhibitors from 68 different countries participated, and 247,000 visitors attended from 102 countries. Organizers are expecting more for the 50th anniversary.  —Danielle Cutler

If you’re envisioning a romantic Valentine’s-weekend holiday, nothing could be more magical than Miami during the two boat shows held over Valentine’s Day each year. If you already have plans, consider heading to the United Arab Emirates at the end of the month for a winter warmup at the Dubai show.

Miami International Boat Show

One of two Miami shows held on the same dates, the Miami International Boat Show (MIBS), held February 14 through 19, 2019, used to be a small-boat show in the Miami Beach Convention Center. The largest boat was less than 50 feet in length. Two years ago, MIBS moved to the Miami Marine Stadium on Key Biscayne, and it transformed almost overnight into a world-class, on-water show. More than 1,300 boats are on display from 170 builders from the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

The organizers also moved its sailboat show to Virginia Key last year, adding a new component as well as offering hands-on instruction and displays from hundreds of equipment and electronics manufacturers. The show is just minutes from the village of Coconut Grove—with its charming cafés, parks, and shops—and downtown Miami, with the art galleries and restaurants in the hip section of Brickell. Between MIBS’ new location and the Miami Yacht Show on South Beach, Miami is definitely the place to be for yachties in February.  —Geri Ward

Miami Yacht Show

Formerly Yachts Miami Beach and then the Miami Yacht Show on Collins Avenue, the Miami Yacht Show  is scheduled for February 14 to 18 in 2019 at its new location in Biscayne Bay between the Venetian and MacArthur causeways, which is just north of downtown Miami. The new venue is closer to superyacht -lovers’ Superyacht Miami at Island Gardens Deep Harbour marina on Watson Island, which hosts the show’s large yachts—up to 500 feet.

Show organizers expect more than 500 boats and yachts, additional parking and on-land exhibit space, and a new AquaZone, where guests will find demos from Flyboard, SeaBob, Rover Boat Board, underwater drones, and more. Be sure to check out the luxury automobiles, private jets, and art on display, as well.

Guests who prefer traveling as a VIP have the option of buying the VIP Experience package ($150), which includes show entry, access to the VIP lounge, and transportation to Superyacht Miami. Don’t underestimate the VIP lounge—this is where you go to get out of the sun, take advantage of the open bar and hors d’oeuvres, and take in the happy-hour events.

Watch for yachts from Amels, Benetti, Heesen, Oceanco, Christensen, Westport, Feadship, and many more.  —D.C.

Dubai International Boat Show

Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS), scheduled for February 26 to March 2, 2019, is a true crossroads of the yachting world, bringing together 26,000 visitors from 76 countries. The show has all the major U.S. and European yacht brands, not to mention local yards like Gulf Craft, which has found an international following for its Majesty superyachts. DIBS’ organizers relocated the show last year to Dubai Creek, a more intimate and elegant setting for the exhibitors and visitors.

Beyond the yachts displayed at the marina and along Superyacht Avenue, the show also has a Super Car Promenade, Luxury Boulevard (with luxury goods and decor), and Dive ME Expo to promote the region’s exceptional reefs. Dubai, of course, is known for its international lifestyle, and that shows up in restaurants like the Armani Hotel as well as the cafés on the Dubai Marina. The Emirate also has world-class shopping centers like the Dubai Mall, with its top-brand stores and glassed-in indoor ski slopes with real snow, or Saga World Dubai, which displays exceptional masterpieces of jewelry, watches, carpeting, and artwork. The Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, features a 124th-floor observation deck that gives exceptional views of the fast-growing city.  —G.W.

Need to change up your usual spring-break ski trip? Balmy Palm Beach is beautiful this time of year.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

Palm Beach International Boat Show , held March 28 to 31, 2019, was once an afterthought to the Fort Lauderdale and Miami shows; however, it has been steadily growing over the last few years, adding extra dock space, more yacht brands, and ever-larger yachts. It now has $1.2 billion worth of boats on display. It’s also in the admirable position of offering the same levels of quality and excellent weather as the other major shows, but without the big crowds. This year, Palm Beach introduced a VIP Experience that includes a dockside indoor club with open bar, hors d’oeuvres, and other luxuries that make it an oasis in the heart of the show.

The event also features a cool AquaZone, which has demos of jetpacks, electric surfboards, paddleboarding, and many new water toys. For a break from the show, the shopping on Worth Avenue is similar to Rodeo Drive or Fifth Avenue, but without the urban background. The exhibits at the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum or shows at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts are also cultural distractions in one of America’s wealthiest zip codes.  —G.W.

Does one really need a reason to visit Barcelona? The architecture, the weather, the museums, shopping, the beach, boating, sangria… And then there’s Greece.

MYBA Charter Show

Head to Barcelona for the MYBA Charter Show on April 30 to May 3, 2019, at OneOcean Port Vell. Tailored to professionals in the charter-yacht industry, the 2018 event featured 53 yachts, 96 exhibitors, and 1,885 attendees. Events include the annual chefs’ competition, pitting yacht chef and crew against yacht chef and crew to determine which team has the best Meet and Greet process, “tablescaping” display, and, of course, food. The 2018 challenge was for each participating chef to prepare five different finger foods to be eaten without cutlery, breaking down to three savory and two sweet items. Legendary yachts such as Oceanco’s 269-foot Alfa Nero and the 254-foot explorer yacht Legend from Icon Yachts participated in 2018, along with their representatives Burgess and Camper & Nicholsons, respectively.  —D.C.

Presented each year for yachting professionals by the Greek Yachting Association in Nafplion, Greece, the  Mediterranean Yacht Show  also showcases charter yachts, parties aboard those yachts (allowing guests to get to know each other and the crew), and a chefs’ competition. The fifth edition of MEDYS proved to be the best yet, with 107 charter yachts and more than 400 yachting professionals from all corners of the globe, making it the largest event of its kind in the Eastern Mediterranean. The GYA expects an even larger number of yachts for 2019, currently estimated to be 120. The 2019 show is scheduled for May 4 to 8, a day longer than the 2018 event. —D.C.

Newport boat show

Take a break from the Hamptons and head to Newport, Rhode Island, to catch a glimpse of the large yachts in town for the charter show.

Newport Charter Yacht Show

One of two summer yacht shows, set in America’s sailing capital, is unique because only charter yachts take part. The Newport Yacht Charter Show , which will be held June 17 to 20 in 2019, is a professionals-only event designed to show the high standards of the charter sector to owners and brokers, with four days of open houses on the yachts. During the last show, the 24 charter yachts ranged from the 198-foot Blue Moon to the 54-foot sailing-catamaran Tohora , with most of the fleet measuring over 100 feet.

The chefs demonstrate their cooking prowess with specially prepared luncheons for brokers, while captains show each yacht’s unique features (water toys, luxury saloons, or beach clubs). The crew and owners even participate in costumed events which, in 2018, included Super Heroes and Under the Big Top. There are best-dessert contests among the chefs as well as “tablescaping” and specialty cocktail competitions. Newport, with its 19th-century mansions on the Cliff Walk and boutiques on Thames Street, makes the perfect New England backdrop for the show. —G.W.

Cannes Yachting Festival France Superyacht

If you’re ready for a cool-down from your blazing-hot summer, Australia’s winter weather—with highs in the 50s—might be a welcome reprieve.

Sydney International Boat Show

Sydney’s International Convention Centre and adjacent Cockle Bay Marina in Darling Harbour played host to the 51st edition of the Sydney International Boat Show from August 2 through 6, 2018. The event features not only yachts of all sizes from respected builders around the world but also all sorts of accessories, demonstration pools, and master classes. Plus, the Australia International Dive Expo has joined in the fun. I would recommend catching your breath while swilling a glass of bubbly at the outdoor Champagne and oyster bar on the event deck. Dates have not yet been announced for 2019. —D.C.

September is a good time to book that Airbnb in the South of France for the whole month so you can hit up all the boat shows. In between Cannes and Monaco, don’t forget to head to Southampton and Genoa to catch the shows there.

Cannes Yachting Festival

Cannes might be better known for its film festival, but the Cannes Yachting Festival —September 11 to 16, 2018—attracts more visitors and is the official launch of the yachting season. Last year on its 40th anniversary, the show had 600 boats on display, including yachts over 150 feet as well as 108 world premieres. Like the film festival, the world’s boat builders understand it’s important to be seen at Cannes. The largest new launch in the 2018 show will be the Baglietto 48 Displacement, a 158-foot superyacht designed by Francesco Paszkowski, with other launches by Custom Line, Ferretti Yachts, Conrad, Nautor’s Swan, and more than 100 others. Because France is such a mecca of sailing, the show also has a large selection of sailboats and multihull yachts. More than 50,000 visitors, about half of which came from outside France, are expected to visit the show to see the new yachts of the season. There’s typically a lively, friendly feel on the crowded docks as the builders can finally reveal yachts that will establish the latest trends in design and performance. Located in the heart of the city, dozens of cafés, bars, and restaurants are within a five-minute walk of the event. The show’s Luxury Galley includes watches, jewelry, lamps, and other custom decor. —G.W.

TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show

Held September 14 to 23 this year, TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show is celebrating 50 years. Organizers expect more than 100 boat debuts and more than 500 exhibitors. Some will be highlighting environmental research. In addition to celebrating its 50 years in existence, the show will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first single-handed nonstop circumnavigation of the globe with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Suhaili on display at the event. Sports stars and celebrities from the last 50 years will be welcomed, and those couples celebrating 50 years of marriage during the show will receive free entrance. Be sure to stop by the new Guinness Bar, which will be giving its own nod to the 1960s.

Besides the yachts and boats on display—and the various 50th-anniversary festivities—the Southampton Boat Show also features kayaks, paddleboards, sailing dinghies, and, this year, a menu at the Marine’s Grill developed by the Hairy Bikers (Si King and Dave Myers), with responsibly sourced seafood in line with the show’s efforts to support marine conservation. VIP-minded visitors will be pleased to discover the Platinum Experience, which includes a glass of Prosecco upon arrival; morning tea, coffee, and pastries; buffet lunch; afternoon tea and cake; entrance fees for the show; a private bar (drinks not included) in the Platinum Lounge; and more. The most exciting part is the hour-long tour aboard a motor yacht.  —D.C.

Salone Nautica

Genoa, Italy’s national boat show, held September 25 to 28, 2018, is one of Europe’s major fall yachting events. Salone Nautica offers 1,000 boats in a Mediterranean setting from Italian yacht builders like Sanlorenzo, Azimut, and Monte Carlo Yachts, as well as non-Italian brands like Nautor’s Swan, Bertram, Beneteau, and Hanse Yachts. Located on the Genoa waterfront, the show is divided into motor yachts, sailboats, powerboats, and outboard boats. The Genoa show distinguishes itself by an inimitable sense of Italian warmth. Organizers call it the “Sea Experience,” and that includes after-show boat tests on the Mediterranean, Big Game Tournament sportfishing displays, and events for divers, kayakers, and small-boat lovers.

Beyond the show, Genoa offers many side tours, including the charming cafés of Via Garibaldi, cathedrals like Basilica di Santa Maria di Castello, the Aquarium of Genoa, and the art museum of Chiostro dei Canonici di San Lorenzo. Walks through the Palazzi dei Rolli and Chiesa Di San Donato give some sense of Genoa’s long history and importance as a maritime center.  —G.W.

Monaco Yacht Show

Monaco Yacht Show

Every September since 1991, yachting enthusiasts, buyers, charterers, yacht builders, and brokers descend on the principality of Monaco for the annual Monaco Yacht Show . And I’m sure this year will be no different. Scheduled for September 26 through 29, 2018, show organizers are expecting 120 custom superyachts from builders, owners, and charter brokers around the globe to moor at the docks of Port Hercules. In addition, 40 of these yachts will be making their worldwide debut. The average length of participating yachts is 160 feet, but this year there will be seven superyachts between 230 and 328 feet in length. And four of them will be making their world debuts. In addition, watersports lovers can view and sometimes try out the 40 different tenders and toys on display. For those into automobiles, 10 different luxury models will be exhibited at the show’s Car Deck. And we mustn’t overlook the two helicopters scheduled to appear. Overall, 580 companies participate in the annual show.

For superyacht clientele, the Monaco Yacht Show offers a VIP visit pack, the Sapphire Experience, which provides exclusive services to new yacht buyers and current owners. Crème de la crème visitors may participate in two invite-only events held the evening of September 25: the Monaco Yacht Summit—mini lectures and discussions with a panel of yachting-industry experts to explore the practical questions of future yacht charterers or buyers—and the Inaugural Gala Event and 5th Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards, where 400 guests celebrate the most spectacular yachts at the show.

Last year’s Monaco Yacht Show saw 36,400 people roaming the tents, halls, and docks. And usually, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco takes a (highly secured) stroll through the event, as well. —D.C.

Sights are most likely set on South Florida for the Fort Lauderdale boat show, but don’t rule out a quick trip to beautiful Abu Dhabi for its fairly new event.

Abu Dhabi International Boat Show

Scheduled for October 17 to 20, 2018, the newcomer to the list will hold its inaugural event this year. Organized by the same company that puts on the Southampton show in the UK, the Abu Dhabi International Boat Show promises to be an impressive debut. The UAE capital has become a boatbuilding center in the Middle East and one of its most beautiful cruising grounds, with more than 300 miles of coastline and 200 islands. It has also hosted some world-class events, including Abu Dhabi Sailing Regatta, Commodore’s Cup, and a stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race. Islands like Yas, Saadiyat, and Sir Bani Yas have become big destinations, and some have world-class marinas. The show will feature yacht builders from 18 countries, including Sunseeker, Benetti, CRN, Mangusta, Princess, Ferretti Yachts, and Pershing.

Many local shipyards will also have their boats on display. Beyond yachts and powerboats, the show will feature Volvo Ocean 60 race boats (Abu Dhabi has been a big sponsor of the Volvo Ocean Race) and F1 Powerboats that accelerate to 100 mph in four seconds. The in-water section will be in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company’s marina, while the rest of the show will be in the adjoining ultramodern exhibit center.  —G.W.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

Every fall at the very end of hurricane season, boats and yachts big and small arrive from all over the globe to take part in the  Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show , the biggest in-water boat show in the world, held this year on October 31 through November 4 in the Yachting Capital of the World. The 2018 edition marks 59 years of this show, which hosts more than 1,500 boats—along six miles of floating docks—1,200 exhibitors, and 110,000 visitors at seven locations around Fort Lauderdale.

Not only will visitors find all kinds of boats—from superyachts and sailing yachts to jet boats and runabouts—but also watersports gear, exotic cars, and everything else nautical. General admission is $33 for adults; $15 for kids ages six to 15; and free for children under six. Choose the Windward VIP Experience for $300 a person for one day. The package includes entrance to the show, access to the Windward VIP Club, and rides on the Water Taxi. But the Windward VIP Club is what makes it appealing—it’s located at the Swimming Hall of Fame, which is a pretty central location, and offers up air-conditioned lounge areas to hang out and cool off in, a dedicated concierge, and private indoor bathrooms (worth any amount of money). If that didn’t do it for you, it offers up a private dining area and a premium open bar.  —D.C.

And that’s a wrap. End your year in the warm and wildly beautiful West Indies.

Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting

Another show catered to marine-industry professionals, the Antigua Charter Yacht Show is scheduled for December 4 through 10 at Nelson’s Dockyard Marina in English Harbour, the Falmouth Harbour Marina, and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina. New for 2018, all registered yachts remain at the docks for the full five viewing days, with the fifth day being a Sail Day, when charter-management companies can showcase their yacht with a cruise around Antigua’s waters and islands in a sort of charter sampler. Festivities include a chefs’ competition (this year’s mission is a New Year’s Eve dinner party), a stewardess competition (a New Year’s Eve decorative table setting), and nightly events. The Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting is a nonprofit and allocates funds to various schools, scholarships, police stations, flood victims, and more.  —D.C.

Rules of the Road

Right of way rules.

Whenever you meet another boat, it’s like approaching an unmarked intersection in your car. Knowing a few, simple right of way rules will help you avoid a collision. Just as motorists must know what to do when approaching a four way stop, every crossing situation at sea is like approaching an unmarked intersection.

Because there are so many different types of boats and styles of boating, it is important to know what to expect when you come upon another vessel.

"Vessels" are anything that floats on the water that is used, or is capable of being used as a means of transportation on water. A log, a bathtub and many other things could be considered a vessel under the Navigation Rules. The Navigation Rules distinguish one vessel from another by both its design, and by its actions. This section covers maneuvering rules only.

There are other navigation rules that you are required to know. Sound Rules are covered under the Sound Signaling Equipment section. Light Rules are covered under the Navigation Light Equipment section.

The Rules of the Road are published by the U. S. Government Printing Office, and are available in any boating supply stores. Every boat owner should have a copy, but they are mandatory to be kept on vessels over 12 meters (39.4 feet) in length.

The Rules generally used in this course are Inland Rules, unless otherwise noted. There are small but important differences in the Rules depending on where you are operating your boat. It is your responsibility to know the Navigation Rules for your boating area.

  • International Rules - Apply to all vessels upon the high seas and in all waters connected to them that are navigable by seagoing vessels.
  • Inland Rules - Apply to all vessels upon the inland waters of the United States, and to vessels of the United States on the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes to the extent that there is no conflict with Canadian law. Certain inland waterways may have specific provisions that apply to certain vessels.
  • Great Lakes - Includes the Great Lakes and their connecting and tributary waters including the Calumet River as far as the Thomas J. O'Brien Lock and Controlling Works (between mile 326 and 327), the Chicago River as far as the east side of the Ashland Avenue Bridge (between mile 321 and 322), and the Saint Lawrence River as far east as the lower exit of Saint Lambert Lock.
  • Western Rivers - Includes the Mississippi River, its tributaries, South Pass, and Southwest Pass, to the navigational demarcation lines dividing the high seas from harbors, rivers, and other inland waters of the United States, and the Port Allen-Morgan City Alternate Route, and that part of the Atchafalaya River above its junction with the Port Allen-Morgan City Alternate Route including the Old River and the Red River.

Vessel Types

  • Power Driven Vessel - Any vessel propelled by machinery. This includes any boat that has an engine. Sailboats are considered powerboats when they are being propelled by a motor - even if the sails are up.
  • Sailing Vessel - Any vessel under sail alone. Remember, if being propelled by a motor, a sailboat is considered to be a powerboat.
  • Vessels Engaged in Fishing - Means any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls or other fishing apparatus which restrict maneuverability, but does not include a vessel fishing with trolling lines or other fishing gear which doesn't restrict maneuverability. This means a shrimper out of Galveston is "engaged in fishing" Someone out trolling for stripers in their Grady-White is NOT considered to be engaged in fishing under the Rules.
  • Seaplanes - Are any aircraft designed to operate on the water.
  • Vessels Constrained by Draft - Means that a vessel can't deviate from a course/channel because they might run aground. A freighter in a narrow channel is an example of this. Note: This is for International waters only, not Inland.
  • Vessels Restricted in Their Ability to Maneuver - Means a vessel that can't maneuver as required by the rules because of the size or operation of the vessel. A fishing vessel pulling in nets and a buoy tender placing a buoy are both examples of a vessel restricted in their ability to maneuver.
  • Vessels not under Command - Any vessel that for some exceptional circumstance is unable to maneuver as required by the Rules, and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel. If Joe boater slips and knocks himself out, and can no longer steer--that's a vessel not under command. If the steering cable goes out, and you can't turn the boat, that's a vessel not under command. If the captain is not paying attention and hits another boat, that's negligence.
  • Underway - Means that you are not anchored, moored, at the dock, or aground. If you are even drifting along, you are underway.
  • Restricted Visibility - Means any condition such as fog, mist, falling snow, rain, or other similar causes that make it difficult to see other vessels. Losing your glasses is NOT restricted visibility.

Rule, Rule, Rule your Boat

It may seem as if you can do anything you want while you are on the water (You might also think that it looks as if everyone else is going crazy on the water). Boating on a crowded waterway can be scary! The good news is that there are rules to govern the action of each vessel. The bad news is that many vessel operators do not know the rules!

Not complying with the Rules - even if you don't know them, can get you in trouble on the water. Even if you think you are following the Rules, if there is something that you can do to avoid a collision - you must do it, even if you deviate from a different Navigation Rule.

It is your responsibility as the ship's captain to be aware of your surroundings at all times, and to operate your vessel in a safe manner. Caution may not be fun, but having an accident sure stinks.

The Rules state that every vessel shall use all available means appropriate to the prevailing conditions to determine if a risk of collision exists. If there is any doubt, such risk shall be deemed to exist.

Rules Explained

The Rules are designed to tell you what to do when you operate your vessel near other vessels. The purpose of the Rules of the Road is to help you avoid an accident--not to establish responsibility or liability if you get into an accident. - Remember, if you get into an accident, you can be held liable, even if you followed the Rules to the letter!

Your primary obligation is to operate in a safe manner. Under the Rules, there is no "right-of-way" like there is on a street. For most situations, Boats are called one of the following.

  • Give-Way Vessel - If you are the Give-Way vessel, you must act as if the "stand-on" vessel has the right to keep going the way it is going. It is your responsibility to signal your intentions to the stand-on vessel, and it is your responsibility to maneuver your boat around the other in a safe manner. Also known as a "Burdened" vessel, as it has the burden of.
  • Stand-On Vessel - If you are the Stand-On vessel, it is your responsibility to acknowledge the intended actions of the give-way vessel. You must also maintain your current course and speed until the give-way vessel passes, or you enter a dangerous situation.

Operator Responsibilities

In addition to the Rules, you have other responsibilities as the captain as well. You are responsible for the safety of everyone aboard your vessel at all times--and you have a responsibility to those with whom you are sharing the water.

  • You must always operate at a safe controlled speed for the situation in which you are boating, and any legally mandated speed requirements that there may be, such as a slow/no wake zone.
  • Take care to avoid careless, reckless or negligent boat operations--such as operating too closely to other vessels, boating under the influence, or operating at an unsafe speed for the given conditions.
  • Steer clear of naval vessels, and other restricted facilities such as bridges, power plants and dams. New Homeland security measures require it, as does your safety! For more information, see the Homeland Security pages.

Finally, as a boater, you have a responsibility to all other boaters--and all others who enjoy the water--to be courteous and respectful of others. This means that you should always watch your boat noise (a legal requirement) avoid congested waters as much as possible, avoid disturbing wildlife and sea grasses, and look out for the safety and well being of other boaters by giving a hand to those in need.

The Pecking Order

There is a "pecking order" that can be used as a simplified memory aid to determine right of way for vessels of different types. Get very familiar with this list, as it is important to understand it thoroughly. The lower most vessel on the list is the give way vessel, and must stay out of the way of vessels that are higher on the list.

  • Overtaken vessel (top priority)
  • Vessels not under command
  • Vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver
  • Vessels constrained by draft
  • Fishing vessels engaged in fishing, with gear deployed
  • Sailing vessels
  • Power driven vessels

Collision Avoidance

  • Rules apply to vessels in all conditions of visibility. Rules are the same at night or in fog, for instance, as they are during a bright sunny day.
  • Every vessel must maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing at all times. Operator inattention and not having an adequate look out are a leading cause of accidents each year.
  • Every vessel must proceed at a safe speed at all times. Several factors should be considered when determining safe speed, including but not limited to the state of visibility, traffic density, your vessel's maneuverability, with special reference to stopping distance and turning ability. At night, consider the presence of background lights such as those from shore, or from the back-scatter of your vessel's own lights. Consider also the state of wind, sea, and current, and the proximity of navigational hazards.
  • The Rules specifically require that any action taken to avoid collision, if the circumstances allow, will be positive, made in ample time, and in keeping with good seamanship. Any changes in course or speed should be large enough to be readily apparent to the other vessel. This means that you should avoid last second changes in course, and you should avoid a small series of changes. Change direction early, and make a large turn.

Maneuvering

two vessels in a crossing situation

The main situations of collision risk are overtaking, meeting head-on, and crossing. When one of two vessels is to keep out of the way (give-way vessel), the other, the stand-on vessel, must maintain course and speed. The stand-on vessel must take avoiding action when it becomes apparent that the vessel required to give way is not taking appropriate action.

The Crossing Rule

Both International and Inland Rules state that when two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her starboard side (the give-way vessel) must keep out of the way.

As the give-way vessel it is your duty to avoid a collision. Typically, this means you must alter speed or direction to cross behind the other vessel (the stand-on vessel).

At night, if you see a red light crossing right-to-left in front of you, you need to change your course. If you see a green light crossing from left-to-right, you are the stand-on vessel, and should maintain course and speed.

The Meeting Situation

two vessels in a head on situation

At times there may be some doubt whether the situation is a crossing or a head-on meeting. In case of doubt, you should assume that it is a meeting situation, in which neither vessel has a clear-cut "right-of-way," and each must act to avoid the other. Each vessel in a meeting situation must alter course to starboard so that each will pass on the port side of the other. At night, you will recognize a head-on meeting situation if you see both red and green side lights at the same time.

The Overtaking Situation

two vessels in an overtaking situation

Any vessel overtaking any other vessel must keep out the way of the vessel being overtaken. The former is the give-way vessel and the latter is the stand-on vessel.

This rule applies even if the overtaking vessel is propelled by wind, oars, or rubber band paddlewheel.

A vessel is deemed to be overtaking when coming up with another vessel from a direction more than 22.5 degrees abaft (behind) her beam. This is the angle prescribed by the stern light.

At night, the overtaking vessel will see only the white stern light of the vessel being overtaken. If you see either side light, it is a crossing situation.

Operating in a Narrow Channel

First and foremost, you have to avoid larger vessels that can only travel in a channel. Even if your vessel is operating under the rules otherwise, you must give way to a boat that could potentially run aground or get into a collision if they left the channel.

Try and operate on the edge of the channel. Be extra cautious if you come to a bend in the waterway, and can't see traffic coming towards you.

You may sound a prolonged blast as a warning to traffic headed your way.

On the Great Lakes and Western River system, vessels going downstream are stand-on, vessels going up stream must give-way.

Potential Collision Situation

When the distance between two vessels decreases and the relative angle of the other vessel off the bow remains the same, then you will soon be trying to occupy the same spot in the water - a collision situation. Change course or reduce speed, even if you are the stand-on vessel.

a tanker seen through a periscope

Conduct of Vessels During Periods of Restricted Visibilty

Operating a boat in areas or at times of restricted visibility requires extra concentration by the skipper and the lookout. You must operate your vessel at a speed at which you can identify and react to a situation and still have enough time to avoid a collision. This is especially important when vessels are no in sight of one another.

  • Operate at a safe speed for the prevailing circumstances
  • Have engines ready for immediate maneuvering - including reverse
  • Don't rely on radar or other electronic imaging alone - use your buiilt in senses at all times
  • Take avoiding actions early and provide ample time for the other vessels to maneuver
  • Avoid sharp turns if being overtaken
  • Always - you are in doubt, reduce your speed
  • Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed

Other Rules

Whether under inland or international rules, power vessels must keep clear of sailing vessels in open waters. A sailboat with motor running is defined as a motor boat. The "pecking order" between sailing vessels is more complex. When two sailing are approaching one another so as to involve risk of collision, one of then shall keep out of the way of each other as follows.

  • When each has the wind on a different side, the vessel which has the wind on the port side shall keep out of the way of the other.
  • When both have the wind on the same side, the vessel which is to windward shall keep out of the way of the vessel which is to leeward.
  • If a vessel with the wind on the port side sees a vessel to windward and cannot determine with certainty whether the other vessel has the wind on the port or the starboard side, she shall keep out of the way of the other.
  • For the purposes of these rules the windward side shall be deemed to be the side opposite to that on which the mainsail is carried. On square-rigged vessels, it shall be deemed to be the side opposite to that on which the largest fore-and-aft sail is carried.

Now that you are familiar with "The Rules," go out and use them in passing, meeting, and crossing situations you find on the water. You will get many puzzled looks from inexperienced boaters with no training or testing.

Remember, if a collision does occur, your proper use of the correct signals and appropriate actions will win you points! But you know enough now to avoid a collision.

The navigation rules of the road contained in this course summarize basic navigation rules for which a boat operator is responsible. Additional and more in-depth rules apply regarding various types of waterways and operation in relation to commercial vessels and other watercraft. It is the responsibility of a boat operator to know and follow all the navigation rules.

For a complete listing of the navigation rules, refer to the document “Navigation Rules of the Road” published by the U.S. Coast Guard (COMDTINST 16672.2 Series) and available through the U.S. Government printing office or on the web here .

For state specific navigation requirements, refer to the state laws where you intend to boat.

Shhh! Ohtani chase kept quiet by design

Blue jays stay tightlipped in pursuit, while dodgers manager admits to their meeting.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Silence is golden and secrecy is sublime.

Standing in the eye of the biggest, boldest pursuit in franchise history, the Blue Jays aren’t saying a word. Even the name “ Shohei Ohtani ” is spoken carefully, each syllable tiptoeing gently to the next.

Don’t rock the boat. Don’t wake the baby.

The secrecy with which baseball’s brightest star lives his life has taken over his free agency, which is bubbling to a boil here at the Winter Meetings. Earlier this offseason, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that it would be “held against” potential suitors if news leaked that he’d visited a specific team.

Well, it’s happening.

Every good drama has a shocking confession, and this one came from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Tuesday afternoon, admitting that he and members of Los Angeles’ front office had met with Ohtani in recent days. It all went very well, the veteran manager thought, and besides, the news would get out eventually.

“Clearly,” Roberts said, “ Shohei is our top priority .”

This was a wailing siren through the silence, because even following reports that Ohtani had toured Toronto’s training facilities in Dunedin, Fla., over the weekend, the Blue Jays refused to give that fire any oxygen, instead letting it live as a detail and nothing more.

Soon after Roberts dropped that nugget, though, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes stood before a throng of cameras -- less than 50 feet from Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins doing the same -- and struck a much different tone. Gomes acknowledged the comment made by his manager, said he was surprised that it was made and went no further. No comments on Ohtani, no comments on a meeting that may or may not have happened.

That toothpaste isn’t going back in the tube.

Across the room, Atkins spoke vaguely, dancing in the shadows between questions. It’s the same approach he took Monday, when his in-person media availability was suddenly shifted to Zoom , where the GM was cryptic with details as he sat in front of a blank, white wall, refusing to answer where in the world he was.

“Everything that we’re doing to make the team better, to the extent that we will keep private, we will do,” Atkins said. “Meetings that occur, don’t occur, I’m not going to get into the specifics of.”

It’s remarkable to watch this happen in real time, a big league GM sidestepping questions not as standard practice, but as an act of strategy that fans are suddenly praising. There’s an elephant in the room, but Atkins will not confirm whether elephants do or do not exist.

“There’s an incredible amount of energy, an incredible amount of buzz around the game and around several potential opportunities, certainly one that is historic, potentially,” Atkins said.

Atkins is built for this game. He’s the Shohei Ohtani of secrecy.

The Blue Jays’ GM went as far as saying that they are “fortunate to be one that’s being considered,” but offered no details about the reported visit to the club’s player development complex over the weekend.

Manager John Schneider did the same, saying “we meet with lots of players” and sticking to the script throughout his media availability. When a reporter joked that Schneider looked tanned when asking about his whereabouts and involvement in said meeting, Schneider just cracked another smile.

“I live in Florida,” he said.

The logic and logistics of it all point toward a decision coming soon from Ohtani. The Blue Jays and Dodgers are clearly among the front-runners here, and while it’s unclear what impact Roberts’ revelation and recent reports will have on Ohtani’s decision, these two clubs are clearly involved in the final sprint. Others, including the Giants, Cubs and Angels, have also widely been linked to this historic chase.

When this news breaks, the landscape of Major League Baseball will tilt in an instant. Until then, it’s one of the biggest secrets in baseball history and the Blue Jays aren’t making a sound.
