  • Harini07 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed! We paid $160 for an activity that would have cost much less if just bought a day pass on that day. I had thought it was a guided tour or something that offered more than a day pass. Please don’t waste your money on this. Just get a day pass when you get to the old town. • roxzannethewanderer 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles You can skip the tour with a rental car This place is gorgeous, but I wish I would have read up more on it before going. So first off- we had a rental car while in Croatia, so you can buy your own tickets and do not need to go through a tour service. I believe the tour services that only included a ride were $100+ and you still had to buy entry tickets. I believe I paid about $100 total with exchange rate for two entry tickets, give or take a little $. The parking isn’t free, but it’s not overly expensive. I still saved money driving myself and were fast walkers- so with the heat, waiting around for a group would have been less than ideal. There are multiple choices on hikes/walks you can do. We did the shorter 2-3 hour walk where you hit the hot spots. Honestly- the place is so gorgeous that I wish we would have planned two days in the area…. The photos do this place no justice. Wear sunblock and take water! Read more Written 15 August 2024
  • Curious42792016530 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful! It was a wonderful experience. Beautiful, a lot of walking involved, we had 15k steps afterward. Gorgeous day, hot, but much better in the sun. Entrance 1 is where we entered at 830am, we’re glad we didn’t go later in the day. Took route C was there about 5 hrs., road the boat. • Lukies21 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience We had a really nice day with the tour. Our tour guide Barbara and Daniel looked after us very well. Daniel was. A great driver being local he was able to avoid the summer traffic jams and our pick ups were on time at each point 👍 Barbara was a great guide giving information along the way not too much on the bus but just enough , then at the three stops we learnt enough information to get a quick gasp of the history of each town. Guides are invaluable…we come a long way so it’s nice to learn a little history and about the region . Thankyou for a great day out. The meal /lunch at the small family restaurant was delicious and we were so happy to enjoy local cuisine…Thankyou to the Familja Ferlin …delicious! Hvala to all for a memorable day. He gauged the level of informative commentary and stories with quiet time when traveling on the bus well. The duration of the day was very good and well planned to showcase key historical events and grasp a sense of modern Istria. The driver on the day was exceptional, ensuring a safe, comfortable and pleasurable trip. 👍 Read more Written 9 August 2024
  • kizzy239 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous! ***** Initially the thought of the long coach ride was daunting; however it wasn't an issue at all (with a couple of rest breaks either side). The time went by so quick and the coach was air conditioned. The guide was very informative and constantly gave an insight into the history of Croatia/Slovenia - with other titbits of information. Very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Lake Bled exceeded my expectations - breath taking views like something out of a fairy tale! Another experience ticked off my bucket list. We enjoyed views from the Castle; free time to walk around the lake and finishing off with a traditional boat (pletnas) across to Bled Island and St. Mary's Church. This is definitely not a trip to be missed! Read more Written 2 August 2024

  • conny18 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles very relaxing late afternoon trip Highly recommended trip - we had a very good and relaxing time on the catamaran. Departing from Gruz port heading north and then to the old city just returning in time for the perfect sun set at the sea. Plenty of space, very friendly staff, mixed music, some snacks and drinks included. It was a chilled out atmosphere and a good option to see the old town and the bridge from the seaside. • Dianne D 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Worth a vist, but recommend in the late afternoon if you're here in July as it gets very hot during the day and no shades in the It's a must see attraction in Pula when visiting. We took a late visite in the afternoon in mid July because of the heat and not many people visits in the afternoon. We recommend to go there in the afternoon. And there is also no shades inside the Amfi. Too bad there is lack of info tablet about the Amfi anywhere inside the arena. The children wanted to know about the gladiators and the inside life of the chambers, areas and so on. So we had to google the info. Below the Amfi, really cool to see how they made olive oil and transport of olive oil and wine throughout Europe. Read more Written 22 July 2024
  • MrsOwenReal 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Well worth it This is well worth booking, if you're here in Croatia, and looking to do something different. We were picked up, exactly on time, outside our hotel, and driven around 25 mins to the first winery. Our guide, Tom, was very knowledgeable and his English was good. We were offered two samples of wine and given a talk about the history of the winery. A short "road train" journey took us to a further two wineries and a flour mill. All very interesting, with tastings and the opportunity to buy products, we learned very little about the actual wine making process, but lots about the families whose businesses we visited. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable experience, particularly the final winery, where we were served Grandma's cake and some home made liqueur. The whole trip was around 4 hours from pick up to drop off. You need good walking shoes and a bottle of water! Would definitely do this again. Read more Written 11 July 2024

At this site they were 50 apiece and at the wall they were 35! Also when I arrived the “ticket” I had wasn’t even any good and the very nice man who had to scan all the tickets had to walk me back to the wall tours office in old town and print me tickets - for free because the ones I bought were a scam. Dubrovnik is a real treasure of Croatia. It is a city very often associated with the word wonder. Dubrovnik is incomparable and remarkable, as if going from treasure to treasure and always finding new reasons for ecstasy. As a bonus, its position in the south of Dalmatia is a definite advantage for renting a catamaran in Croatia and sailing to the other Croatian islands that are often not mentioned in tourist guides.

A gentle and beautiful frenzy seizes the visitors entering this Mecca of Croatian tourism via the ACI marina Dubrovnik. It will become the starting point for your catamaran charter in Dubrovnik. Cultural emulation is a key principle in this medieval city, which is covered with architectural gems (Dubrovnik's old town, the walls of Dubrovnik, Pile Gate, Onofrio fountain, Rector's Palace, the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries, Sponza Palace, the Assumption Cathedral...), cultural events and pink tiled houses donated by Toulouse after the Second World War. After only a few hours, the word beauty is on everyone's lips.

How much does a catamaran rental cost in Dubrovnik?

Sailing on board a catamaran

From Dubrovnik, the most common route is up the Adriatic. However, heading south towards the beautiful city of Kotor in Montenegro will leave no one behind. Heading towards Split gives you the chance to add the islands of Mljet, Korcula, Vis, Hvar and Brac to your Croatian sailing programme. Further north, sailing to Zadar almost requires passage through Sibenik, Vodice and Biograd na Moru.

A week's cruise in Croatia is an ideal timing to leave Dubrovnik and let the catamaran excel on the water towards the Kornati archipelago, west of Murter. Interested in Italy? 107 miles are to be covered to reach Bari, in the mythical region of Puglia. The Albanian experience could start in Durrës, 100 miles from Dubrovnik. More than 1200 islands, several countries nearby, seaside resorts in profusion: the continuation promises to be royal.

When is the best time to visit Dubrovnik?

The best time to visit Dubrovnik, Croatia is between June and Spetember due to the low rainfall and hot summer sun. The average sea temperature is at its highest then for those wanting to dive off their yacht charter into the beautiful Croatian waters.

During the mid-season, May and October, you will find cooler weather but much quieter streets as there are not as many tourists. Boat renters can also benefit from lower prices during the mid-season compared to the high season. Finding the right time for your visit to Dubrovnik Croatia means finding the right compromise between good weather, not too busy and the right price.

What is included in a catamaran charter?

Boat rentals in Dubrovnik, Croatia vary considerably in boat type, length of time and price of the charter. For those who have a sailing license, bareboat charters are available and for those who don't then you can rent a boat that comes with a captain and even a crew. Allow your captain to take the helm and show you and your guests all the best spots along the coast- including hidden beaches, stunning anchorages and remote islands and coves.

Optional extras are also offered for many rentals, this may include snorkeling and diving equipment to jet-skis and wakeboards- depending on the boat owner.

Discovering Dubrovnik with Click&Boat

Take the Dubrovnik cable car from the north of the city walls to the summit of Mount Srđ, 405 metres above sea level. The ascent takes no more than 4 minutes and on arrival the view is breathtaking. You will find the traditional roofs below, while the horizon is clear to see the Adriatic Sea, the Elaphite Islands (Šipan, Lopud and Koločep) and the island of Lokrum, ten minutes from the Old Port of Dubrovnik. Your catamaran will be able to cruise around and anchor in the bay while you visit a forest reserve well preserved from the tourist hustle and bustle of Game of Thrones fans, as Dubrovnik was used to shape King's Landing in the hit TV series.

Sunshine is rarely absent in Croatia. The catamaran will therefore soon be used to your advantage for the next sunbathing trip. Space, comfort, accommodation capacity, luxury.

There's natural beauty, grand palaces, award-winning vineyards, impeccable tavernas and more to explore, and plenty of great places to throw down the anchor and take a dip in the warm sea.

Be aware that Dubrovnik is a very popular place to sail from, and yachts and catamarans are usually fully booked for the peak season, so don't delay! 6-day Sailing Itinerary from Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a brilliant place to go sailing, so good choice! From this itinerary, you’ll see mountains, lakes, beaches and bays, plus islands, cliffs, caves and super-cute villages a world away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Dubrovnik - 6 day Sailing itinerary

In total, our voyage will be around 116 nautical miles, which means an average of just under 20 nM a day – with the longest day being 28 nM. In a yacht you should be able to make about 5 knots (Nm/hour), so we’re talking about 3-5 hours of sailing time a day, which should leave ample time to explore the places where you start and stop, to nip into cute looking bays for lunch, or to throw down the anchor so you can have a swim. You’ll return to Dubrovnik next Friday evening, so if you haven’t been to explore it yet, there is still time.

Sipan

From Dubrovnik, you need to beating into the wind (the prevailing wind for the summer season is a south-westerly from the sea to the shore. Once out of the channel, bear north-westerly and follow the coast, admiring the landscape (and expensive houses) along the way. Our first port of call is Sipan, on the island of the same name.

Sipan is notable for both its exceptional unspoilt beaches and its snorkelling, with a pretty old town and very welcoming locals.

Polace

Polace is a naturalist’s dream – it is part of a national park and conservation area, so the whole area is full of lush vegetation and is a haven for wildlife. It’s a tranquil and serene place to spend the night, and there are some nature trails to be explored and a beautiful lake to be discovered if you have the time. The name ‘Polace’ is derived from the Italian word for palace, so called because there used to be a magnificent building overlooking the bay (from 100 to 600 AD). Unfortunately, the palace has long since disappeared, but you can still explore its ruins.

During the summer season, the local town includes a couple of bars and a restaurant to help to keep your spirits up, but the population dwindles to below fifty people in the winter.

Korcula

Korcula is an ancient Greek town, which has developed over the years, gaining fortifications and a giant wall along the way. There are crazy atmospheric narrow steets and stacks of architecture to be admired, including the Cathedral of Saint Mark, which has an interior lined with works of art from Italian masters, collected from when it was part of the Venetian empire. The town is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the great explorer (and sailor) Marco Polo, who was one of the first Europeans to find China (and certainly the first one to document his travels) and the book he wrote helped to inspire a certain Christopher Columbus. You’ll find a plaque that marks his birthplace in the old town.

Aside from Marco Polo, Korcula is the home to some fine wine and olive oil, and the figs here are supposed to be the best figs in the whole of Croatia.

Trstenik

Leaving Korcula, it’s time for a change of direction and another island, which is only 13 nautical miles away. Bearing pretty much due East takes you to Trstenik. It’s a small town which is technically on a peninsular from the mainland, but it has the look and feel of a small fishing village.

As it’s only a short sail today, you’ll pass a couple of bays on the port side where it is possible to stop for a quick dip, or you can head straight to Trstenik to enjoy what it has to offer. Trstenik is the main town in one of the key wine regions in Croatia and there’s a number of local vineyards – including the famous Grgic winery – where you can indulge in sampling the local produce. The most well-known wine from the region is a Plavac Mali, which is very, very drinkable.

Lopud

Lopud is covered with pine trees and has a delightful sandy beach. Some people say it’s the most beautiful island in Croatia, but it’s hard to say – there are so many beautiful islands. Despite being so close to Dubrovnik, it has traditionally been an island that was frequented only by the local aristocrats, so it is never crazy busy, even in the peak season, and you shouldn’t feel as though you have to elbow your way through crowds in the town. There’s no cars here, and if you can’t relax here, you can’t relax anywhere.

Restaurants-wise, you should be able to find what you’re looking for in Lopud, and there’s a good mix of bars to help the evening go serenely.

Dubrovnik

Don’t worry if it suddenly feels like you’ve stepped back in time - Dubrovnik is one of the key filming locations for Game of Thrones, and they sometimes dress up the whole city for filming!

After drinking in the atmosphere in Dubrovnik – and getting the same feeling as thousands of other sailors have had down the years – it’s time to head back around the headland and inland to the marina. You should aim to be back in the marina before 5pm so that the boats can be inspected ready for the changeover day tomorrow.

Hopefully you will have enjoyed a fun week, taking in some fine views and really enjoying the sun, sea and sailing, but also enjoying the company of your crew – you’ll likely miss them when you are sat at work next week *sigh* Enjoy your last night in Dubrovnik, have a safe trip home, and then we’ll see you soon on PlainSailing.com to start planning your next adventure!

Sailing Conditions

Croatia Sailing - Wind Conditions

Winds are usually between Force 3 and Force 6 – which are ideal sailing winds - and the hotter the sun is, the stronger the wind. Oddly enough, you’ll find that winds rise between 9am and mid-day, then there’s a few hours lull (the local sailors say that the wind has ‘gone to lunch’), before picking up stronger from around 2pm to 6pm. At night, there’s light breezes back towards the sea as the air cools, or no breeze at all.

Outside of the sailing season, winds can arrive in any which direction, and at unreliable speeds – they can be strong and brutal winds from the mountains, icy winds from across Russia, tropical storms from across the Mediterranean, or gentle breezes from Italy.

Dubrovnik - Average Temperature

Marina Details - ACI Marina, Dubrovnik

The main ACI Marina in Dubrovnik is 6km (which translates into a decent hour-long coastal walk or a short (and cheap) ten minute taxi ride) away from the stunning Dubrovnik city centre, which has an Old town which is, in its entirety, a UNESCO world heritage site, and a major tourist destination.

The 380 berth marina was voted ‘best marina in the Adriatic’ for 2010-12 and features not just the usual restaurants, bars, and shops, but a swimming pool, football and tennis courts, hairdresser and bureau de change.

If you're staying in the area before or after your charter, we can recommend this place that is close to the marina: Hotel Vimula .

This Dubrovnik sailing break is ideal for those who are active and want to see as much of the Dubrovnik area, but have limited time. This short cruise takes you paddleboarding, cycling, swimming and snorkeling on four islands. But don’t worry, days are structured so you have enough time to unwind and relax.

Your home for this adventure will be a comfortable sailing catamaran that easily accommodates 10 persons. It is big enough for everyone to have their own space without feeling cramped.

We will visit islands of the Elaphiti Archipelago: thirteen islands stretching west from Dubrovnik. Only three of those islands have people living on them year round: Lopud, Kolocep and Sipan, and Kolocep and Lopud are completely car free. You will also discover a national park situated on the island of Mljet – you will cycle around two salt water lakes and visit the islet with the monastery in one of those lakes. Finally, we visit the Peljesac peninsula, home of some of the best Croatian wines, and a place to enjoy the freshest oysters and mussels.

Our experienced local guides and skippers will avoid overcrowded destinations ensuring you get the most authentic short cruise experience. You will have the opportunity to dine with local families in their homes and enjoy good food and excellent wine. Friendly dolphins or tuna in the area often escort our yachts. The sea is blue, clear, warm and friendly.

This trip departs every day of the week except Fridays and includes three nights on the boat. Families with children aged 6 and up are welcome on family departures.

This is a non-smoking holiday, which means we ask our travellers to refrain from smoking in the company of other guests.

You can easily combine this short cruise with our other short experiences all over Croatia.

Back on dry land, you'll swap the views from the water for views from above as you ride a cable car up nearby Mount Srđ for breathtaking vistas of Dubrovnik and the surrounding islands.

Day 3 Korčula: Along the Dalmatian Coast

Dubrovnik begs to be further explored and you'll have some extra time to do so today on your own. Soak in every last bit of the city's beauty before taking to the sea and heading up the Dalmatian Coast to the island of Korčula for your first taste of life on the Croatian isles.

Day 4 Korčula: Your OMG Day

Discover Korčula today on your own terms. Choose between 2 activities which will get you outdoors and active as well as sampling some of the regions delicacies. Whichever you choose, your body,, mind and stomach will be forever grateful.

Day 5 Hvar: Island Life

The Dalmatian Islands are nothing short of spectacular and each one is quite unique with its own feel. Swap Korčula Island for Hvar and see for yourself, exploring the town of Hvar as well as taking in the island's gorgeous beaches and lively nightlife.

Day 6 Hvar: A Day on the Water

Feel the wind on your face and taste the sea in the air as you head out from Hvar to explore some of the nearby islands. You'll spend the day in and out of the water, exploring hidden coves, swimming from the boat and hiking to a secluded beach. If you. could imagine a perfect day actively exploring and island-hopping in the sun and sand, this would be it.

Day 7 Trogir: Explore Split

Back on the mainland, the city of Split is the largest along Croatia's coast, where you'll be immersed in its history and beautiful architecture in the old part of the city. An important maritime transport hub in the region, Split occupies a strategic position on a peninsula that juts out into the Adriatic Sea, and has been inhabited for over 2000 years.

Day 8 Trogir: Krka Waterfalls and National Park

Immerse yourself in Croatia's natural beauty on a hike through a lush forest, following a river until the sight of a breathtaking waterfall comes into view. Enjoy the moment and the sound of the cascading water before re-entering the forest and allowing the sound of the birds to take over. Back in urban civilization, take in more beautiful architecture and historical landmarks in Sibenik on the way back to Trogir.

Day 9 Trogir

The adventure finishes today, and you can depart at any time.
