Description

The d.h. russell boat knife #3, "love my army knife".

BOAT/REGULAR SHEATH This knife can be sold in different configurations, depending on what sheath you chose.  If you get it with the regular sheath, it is known as the Boat knife due to its triangular shaped handle that helps prevent slippage when wet and was designed for hunting.

ARMY SHEATH  If you get it with the overlap sheath, it is known as the Army knife, or 'Jump Knife' as the paratroopers call it. This was issued to the army for well over 30 years and is still stocked in some kitshops across the country. The knife completely enclosed is also extra security against losing the knife when hunting.

YACHTSMAN SHEATH  If you get it with the sheath with the pouch that holds a marlin spike & shackler (a sailors tool), that is known as the Yachtsman's knife. A true favorite over the years with the crew of the Bluenose as well as many Coast Guard and yachting people worldwide.

General Purpose fixed blade outdoor knife, but ideal for hunting.

Extremely comfortable grip for any application, from small game dressing and birds to large game.  Palm & finger fitting "offset" handle for safe grip.

Steel: Blade approx. 4" x 15/16" of 1/8" stock, total knife length 8 1/4". Available in high carbon stainless steel blade, or carbon steel blade. Regular sabre grind, or flat grind blade options.

***Grohmann Flat Grind Camping Knives

Camper/hiker-style knife

Based on the classic design, these more general purpose blades can go anywhere you go! Ground flat from the top right down to the cutting edge makes for a more thinner, lightweight, versatile blade that sharpens up in a flash.

By your side in Grohmann's sturdy genuine leather belt sheaths, these flat grind knives make for excellent camping knives- from dressing game to camp cooking duties and more.

The thinner, stiff, flat ground blades can accompany you on a fishing trip, clean your fish, then thinly slice your dinner. Each comes gift boxed with our Lifetime Limited Warranty.

NOTE: Carbon steel Hunting Knives getting flat grinds are CUSTOM orders only and are done on a per order basis so extra cost & time will apply.

Grohmann Materials

Grohmann are great because of the skilled craftspeople and the good quality materials. Various handle materials are offered. Grohmann Kitchen Knives are made with the Classic Rosewood, the sani-safe dishwasher safe Black Polypropylene, or the water-resistant Xtra resinwood handles.

Grohmann Outdoor knives are available in a variety of steel/handle combinations. Handles are as important to the quality of our knives as are the blades. And since all handles involve natural materials, no two handles are alike. Safety, comfort, balance and lasting beauty are handcrafted into each one. After all, your knife must "feel right".

Fixed Blades

Grohmann takes pride in their products and that means using high quality materials. Grohmann's most popular stainless steel in the outdoor fixed blade knives are fashioned from european high carbon stainless, such as 4110, which is somewhat comparable to the USA 440 series, and we maintain a 56-58 degree rockwell hardness on all outdoor knives. This steel has withstood the test of time due to its ease of resharpening and long lasting edge holding ability.

The other choice for the fixed blades is a european carbon steel which is made from a C70-type european carbon steel for the carbon-lovers out there. As any quality steel goes, stainless or carbon, all knives should be kept cleaned and oiled to prevent rusting, but especially in the carbon steel knives. They tend to hold an edge longer and sharpen up faster than the stainless, but they will corrode if not kept cleaned and oiled at all times. When carbon knives leave the Grohmann factory, the blades are oiled with non-toxic mineral oil and wrapped in wax paper to preserve the blades. Carbon will corrode if not kept cleaned and oiled, this is the nature of the beast, so be sure to wash your knives after use, dry and apply a light oil. Knives returned due to neglect will not be covered under warranty, but can usually be refinished for a minimal fee (for more information, click on the Warranty section or Lifetime Limited Warranty sheet that arrived with your first quality knife purchase).

Pocket & Lock

Other european steels somewhat comparable to AUS6 are used in the pocket and lock knives. Rockwell hardness 56-58 degrees is maintained throughout all of the Outdoor knives.

The high carbon stainless steel qualities used in the Kitchen Knives range throughout the different lines, and just gets thicker and heavier as you move up the lines. Good Quality [poly & regular lines], Better Quality [full tang rosewood and full tang xtra lines], and Best Quality [forged rosewood and forged xtra lines]. Rockwell 54-56 hardness is maintained across the Kitchen Knife lines.

Outdoor Blade Grinds

Grohmann offers two blade grinds on most outdoor knives, our regular "sabre" grind, or the new flat grind option.

yachtsman knife

(To order flat grinding: In the stainless models there is no price difference, simply add an "F" to the model number for flat grinding example: #R1SF or leave the number as is for our regular classic grind example: #R1S. Regular "sabre" grinds on the carbon blades are regular list price ie #R1C; but any carbon steel flat grinds are done on a custom basis only by special request and are subject to a custom charge example: #R1CF )

Handle Materials

Grohmann offers our classic Rosewood in many beautiful variations. Ranging from deep, rosy brown to blonde strips, each handle is unique as no two handles are ever the same. Plantation grown mainly in East India, this special wood is selected for its durability, colour & rich grain. A good solid handle material that gets a better grip after use, but like any good knife with quality steel it is not recommended to be left soaking in water. Rosewood is always an excellent choice for a classic handle.   These eye-catching handles are made from layers of natural hardwoods impregnated with resin. The beauty of wood, a high gloss finish that does not require any future liquid finishes, not affected by extreme temperatures & resistant to the corrosive affects of salt water are just some of the reasons to choose Xtra Water-Resistant Resinwood.
We have added the black linen micarta to our line as well, available on most outdoor knives. Micarta is commonly called the "steel of the plastic family" for its strength and durability and is similar to G-10. Composed of layers of linen soaked in resin, it is lightweight yet tough, has a slighty linen textured look but fairly smooth to the touch when finished.
Made from shed stag horn, a lasting natural choice that is pleasing to the eyes as it is to the hand. Some horn comes with natural grooves & indentations providing a good grip. Each horn is different in texture and colour and will provide a unique handle with every knife. Nice enough for a presentation piece but durable enough to use. Limited quantities due to the stag ban.   All natural Water Buffalo Horn handles have a high shine finish with colour variations from jet black to black with streaks of pearl gray and white. Water Buffalo handles are naturally water-resistant and extremely durable. Available on most models.

Why Our Knives Are a Cut Above

Charles Horton

"While skiing alone on a favorite Colorado mountain I fell and broke my leg. My day excursion became a nine day experience in survival. I was carrying the Grohmann original model knife in my pack. Your knife was an integral part of my survival."

Rigging Knife F.A.Q.'s

What is a "sheepsfoot" blade?

Throughout history, sailors, riggers and shipwrights have relied upon the traditional  "sheepsfoot blade" for everyday use aboard the ship. It is named after its blunt, rounded tip and flat bottom edge which closely resemble the profile of a sheep's foot. It is not a fighting blade or weapon, but in the application of a rigging knife, it is understood to be one of the best blade designs for cutting rope.

Unlike a sharp-tipped hunting blade (drop point; clip, Bowie, etc.), the idea is to reduce the possibility of getting accidentally jabbed while working and moving around aboard the ship. The other advantage is that a true sheepsfoot blade carries a perfectly straight cutting edge. This enables the rigger to place a line on a cutting block or flat surface... then set the blade on the line exactly where he wants it... and then strike the top of the blade with a mallet. With a little bit of practice, this produces an extra-clean cut without sawing and damaging the line.

Rigging Knife with Sheepsfoot Blade

Centuries later, the "Sheepsfoot Blade" is probably still one of the best for cutting rope & lines. Notice how the handle has been drilled to attach a lanyard. Perfect!

What is the marlinspike used for?

The marlinspike is the primary tool for everything rope-related. It should be tapered to a fine point, but not quite so sharp as to damage or cut the individual fibers of the line or rope. It is often used to help free up jammed knots in a hurry, particularly if the knot has been repeatedly soaked and strained over the course of time. The other use is for rope-splicing, where the spike will be inserted between strands to loosen things up and create working room for the tucks while completing the splice.

A proper rigging knife will also have a "lanyard bail" (or a ring, or sometimes a drilled hole) for attaching a light line or pull loop. With a lanyard, the knife can be tied to its owner and is always ready for action without risk of getting dropped overboard.

What about serrated blades, or combination straight/serrated blades?

Serrated blades have a very specific range of cutting applications in which they excel. The serrated blade cuts quickly and is ideal for high-tech rope materials such as Dyneema, Kevlar, and Spectra. It also does well as a safety knife for fast cutting in emergencies. However serrations work by "sawing rather than slicing," and so the fibers of the rope react differently, especially with smaller diameters, or when rigging and splicing.

So depending on how the knife will be used, there is a case to be made for both straight-edge and serrated type blades. The combination of both  is also a possibility.

What is your advice on getting a folding knife vs. a sheath knife?

It really depends on the application because they both have their place. Personal preference is also a major factor here, as well as the size (diameter) of line that you might be expecting to cut. Of course a folding knife offers superior portability and convenience because it can be easily slipped into a pocket or pouch. And as long as its kept sharp, a good folding knife can do just about anything that a sheath knife can do.

However a sheath knife offers the quickest, one-handed operation, which can be an important safety consideration. Also the sheath knife, due to its usually greater length and mass, is able to cut larger diameters of line faster , and with fewer strokes . I also like the fact that a sheath knife can be combined into a tool kit... holding real and proper full-size tools that are durable enough for everyday use aboard the ship.

yachtsman knife

In nautical terms, what is the difference between a rope and a line?

Technically speaking, "rope" is synonymous with the term "cordage", and is the most correct, general term to describe the finished material itself, i.e. "a spool of rope." Rope becomes "line" once it has been assigned a specific purpose, such as a dockline, anchor line, heaving line, jackline, etc. Running rigging and sail controls are 'lines' as well, including halyards, sheets, reefing lines, topping lifts, downhauls, outhauls, cunninghams, preventers, and most boom vangs (except hydraulic). The list is far from complete.

Of course there are just enough exceptions to keep things interesting, because we also have bolt ropes, foot ropes, luff ropes, bell ropes, rope lanyards, etc... some of which are really, of course, lines! :)

Best boat knife – 11 options tried and tested

  • June 12, 2024

The marine group Tech Editor, Fox Morgan gives their essential buyers guide advise on the best boat knife for a variety of uses around your boat

yachtsman knife

The best boat knife will be a life saver and a constant sailing companion for years to come. Make sure you find the right one that suits you and what you want from it.

A blade that can slice through lifejacket harness webbing may not be suitable for severing a 12mm mooring warp that has become stuck around a bollard as you descend a lock.

A knife that can saw through a polypropylene fishing line wrapped around your prop may fare less well faced with a Dyneema halyard jammed in a riding turn.

Almost every cruising yacht has a knife or three rattling around in a chart table drawer. Some skippers have a knife in a sheath attached to a point in the companionway or somewhere else easily reached. Many sailors also carry a knife in the pocket of their foul-weather gear. We sailors really do need a multitude of knives.

The decision making process behind each one though can take time and we don’t always get the chance to test a knife in a shop as they’re locked away for safety.

As an offshore sailor I have a boat load of knives that I have tested and plenty more that have been loaned to me on friends and customers boats in moments of urgent need. Here’s my top choices  of best boat knife for a variety or purposes.

Editors choices: At a glance

Best boat knife.

yachtsman knife

Gerber EZ-Out Rescue knife

Best boat knife in test

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, easy to open, very powerful cutting blade

Reasons to Avoid: some may find the blade a little too aggressive

This is a single blade with a rounded tip and no other tools or features. Although the blade remains safely sprung closed, it is easy and safe to open one-handed.

The 7.8cm-long blade is serrated, but not so heavily that the knife grips a rope when it should be cutting it. We found the EZ-Out Rescue the most effective cutter in our test. Whether faced with the tough Dyneema halyard, the webbing or the awkward polypropylene line, this blade scythed through in a few seconds at most.

The blade locks well and is easily returned via a push point on the rear. At 73.7g, the EZ-Out Rescue is very light and there is a lanyard point as well as a pocket clip.

That bright yellow, reinforced thermoplastic handle is mottled for grip and Gerber has boosted this with a raised black rubber lip on each side. The overall unit is relatively thin but perfectly comfortable to use.

This knife comes with a lifetime warranty.

Victorinox Skipper Pro Swiss Army Pocket Knife

Best boat knife with onboard tools

read the review :  Best sailing knife tested- Victorinox Skipper Pro

Reasons to Buy: every tool is useful to a skipper, high build quality, excellent marlin spike

Reasons to Avoid: heavier than a basic knife, the pliers are small

The best boat knife is the one you always carry with you. This Victorinox has been by my side for years and got me out of some scrapes as well as helped me to fix a few things on the go.

The built in additional tools make this more than just a knife. So yes, it’s a bit heavier and fatter than a knife that s solely a knife.

Probably the best knife I ever used on a boat.

yachtsman knife

Wichard offshore knife

Reasons to Buy: glow in the dark options make finding in the dark easy, solid tools, well built

Reasons to Avoid: the knife can be stiff to pull out so requires two hands to open

I love this knife. It given to me as a gift over 10 years ago and it’s still sharp and still a reliable tool that I keep by my chart table.

It features a marline spike, bottle opener and shackle key as additional tools to the 7.5cm-long blade. The body glows in the dark which can make it easy to find or a fun way to have a potentially lethal glow stick party if you’re an old school raver like me with a black light. Anyway I digress.

The chunky plastic handle is utilitarian rather than showy It’s clearly tough, but unlike some knives on test, has no sharp or jutting edges that might mark chart or saloon tables. There is a lanyard hole for this 132g model. I made my own lanyard out of a bit of cord.

It’s quite a tight opening which can mean gripping it to open with cold hands is a bit difficult. To close the knife you have to half pull out one of the other tools.

The knife is pretty good, though as it’s serrated it is trickier to sharpen.

Wichard have updated this knife to integrate the shackle key with marlin spike which lightens the tool by having a bit less metal on it.

Gerber Dual Force

Best for powering through tough jobs

Specifications:  Make: Gerber | Model: Dual Force | Weight: 310g | Blade length: 74mm | Closed length: 115mm | Locking blade: Yes | Features: 12 | Singlehanded use: Yes

Reasons to Buy : Powerful adjustable hex pliers | Useful array of tools | Good quality build Reasons to Avoid : A little heavy | The pliers aren’t designed for dainty tasks

This multitool has four swivel out tools: a sharp smooth blade, a wood saw blade, a file and a centre drive screw driver. The main tool is the multi grip powerful pliers/jaws that can be butterfly revealed.

These are the biggest and most powerful pliers available in a multitool that we know of.

The centre drive screwdriver takes standard bits and with it’s central position, you can really get some force behind it. Obviously you wouldn’t want to be doing a massive job with this as you’re hand would become sore after a while but the balance and position of tools offered make this a really useful bit of kit to have in your inventory.

It comes with a decent belt holster too.

yachtsman knife

Gerber River shorty

Best boat knife for emergency use

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, safety tip, really strong handle

Reasons to Avoid: may be a little short for some tasks

The Gerber River shorty has a blunted tip and is a fixed blade with a sheath ptotector. This knife is ideally suited for being a reach for in case of emergency kind of boat knife.

You’d strap this to the binnacle leg or attach it to a safe point within reach of the helm or alternatively keep it in a grab bag or emergency pack.

The handle is grippy with extra lips to gain purchase when sawing away at something urgently.

The holes in the handle lend themselves perfectly for attaching a lanyard to avoid this being lost over the side.

A big thumbs up from me on this knife as it’s visible and easy to use with or without gloves on.

yachtsman knife

Gerber Strap Cutter

Best boat knife for webbing

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, very easy to grip, has built in glass hammer

Reasons to Avoid: very specific use, hard to sharpen

The Gerber strap cutter and glass breaker is a neat but powerful tool that can get you out of trouble fast.

Ideally worn about the person, either stowed on or near your lifejacket or for use in a liferaft or other emergency grab bag.

It has a really sturdy grip and fits well in the hand, whether you have gloves on or not.

A great bit of kit, especially if you find yourself needing to cut webbing in a hurry, or smash glass for any reason.

yachtsman knife

Spinlock S-Cutter

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, easy to use, fits in a pocket easily

Reasons to Avoid: might be hard to grip with very cold hands

This is a tool designed specifically for slashing through a safety tether in a hurry, if the tether is under load and can’t be released. Spinlock says that ‘by providing a means of disconnection, anyone wearing the Cutter satisfies ISAF and ORC recommendations’.

If that sounds unlikely, remember cases where the victim has been held under a capsized boat by a tether, or a tethered MOB has drowned while being dragged through the water. The S-Cutter comes in a protective sheath and a pouch and is small and light enough to keep in a foul-weather jacket pocket. There is also a lanyard hole if you want to keep it on your lifejacket full-time.

The tool features serrated edges for added grip in the wet. On test, we found the tool uncomfortable and difficult to get a useful purchase on. The device performed poorly in our cutting test, needing a significant amount of concerted sawing before it severed our safety tether webbing.

yachtsman knife

Gill Harness Rescue Tool

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, comes with a lanyard, fits in a pocket easily

Reasons to Avoid: the cutting jaw might be a bit on the small side

This is another device designed for cutting safety tether webbing in a hurry. The blade lies on the inner corner of a U-shape in the design, which is too narrow to accommodate all but tether webbing or thin dinghy line.

The Gill model incorporates a shackle key which gives it a slightly more substantial body and makes it more comfortable to use than the Spinlock. The design includes a finger hole opposite the U-shaped blade so that cold, wet hands do not have trouble gripping the implement.

There is a lanyard hole and the tool is small enough, at 90mm long, to keep in a pocket or attached to your lifejacket belt. Gill has coated the stainless steel in titanium which is said to impede corrosion.

On test, the Harness Rescue Tool needed just one stroke to sever our tether, whether the webbing was stretched taut or held in a loop in one hand. On our guardrail lashing, it was equally effective, but too narrow for the ropes.

yachtsman knife

Gill Personal Rescue Knife

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, excellent knife blade, slips easily into a secure pocket

Reasons to Avoid: the blade folding clip can be fiddly with cold hands

This boat knife is a single folding blade that is easily opened with one hand due to a thumb stud on both sides. The jet black aluminium handle has an integrated tether-cutter, but curiously, given the success of the Gill Harness Rescue Tool, we found this to have very poor cutting power on our test tether.

The 7.8cm-long knife blade itself – titanium- coated stainless steel for corrosion resistance – is rounded at its tip and has an unusual, almost childlike, bobbly serration.

In terms of cutting power, however, it was far from childlike, and proved the second most effective on test, slicing through all of our materials in a few strokes at most, equal to the Wichard.

The blade locks out securely and is folded back only once you’ve pushed in a clip within the blade slot, an idea we’ve not seen on other models but which works well ergonomically.

The Personal Rescue Knife is fitted with a clip to attach to a lifejacket or belt, and has small lanyard holes within the clip.

yachtsman knife

Gerber Obsidian Folding Knife

Reasons to Buy: great locking mechanism, easy to open one handed, fits in a pocket easily

Reasons to Avoid: small blade requires more effort to cut

The biggest plus point of this model is its locking mechanism. A thumb-operated clip locks the blade shut or open, while an additional thumb-button is pressed before it can be closed.

It sounds picky, but it’s not and with the thumb studs, the blade can be opened one-handed. Once halfway open, our test model could be flicked open all the way.

This 7.8cm-long blade has a 2.8cm-long serration at its base. The rest of the blade is smooth. We found the serration was not long enough to saw effectively at our lines and was prone to sticking.

On the guardrail lashing, the Obsidian performed well, but overall, we found it required more strokes than the other knives on test to cut through our thicker lines and tether webbing.

There are four other tools kept in the back of the handle – two screwdrivers, a bottle opener and a small file. A lanyard and pocket clip should ensure this knife does not go overboard.

The glass-filled nylon handle is smart and very comfortable to use but felt quite slippery compared to other models on test. It was also relatively heavy, at 130g.

The Obsidian comes with a lifetime warranty.

yachtsman knife

Leatherman Fuse

Reasons to Buy: well built, excellent pliers, 25 year warranty

Reasons to Avoid: knife fells like secondary tool onboard, heavier than a plain knife, two handed opening

Although the Leatherman Wave has become popular with sailors for its wide and well-judged array of tools, for price reasons we chose a relatively conservative multi-tool, the Leatherman Fuse, with only 12 features additional to the knife.

It has a lanyard that needs to be deployed from within the body, but the 170g weight of the Fuse means you would not want it dangling too loosely around your person – better in a pocket.

The 6.8cm locking blade was extremely effective and easily deployed from within the Fuse’s body, not from the outside as on some other Leatherman models.

It sliced through all our ropes and the webbing without any problem. With pliers, wire stripper, three screwdrivers, scissors and a bottler opener, this multi-tool would cater for a lot of jobs on board with aplomb.

With none of the tools on the outside, you need both hands to use the Fuse, perhaps not ideal at sea, but the design was straightforward and all the tools easily accessible. The stainless steel body looks slippery but the Fuse fits nicely in the palm and even when wet offers solid grip. It comes with a 25-year warranty.

Best sailing knives: 12 of the best safety knives for emergency use

Fox Morgan

  • July 19, 2023

Tech Editor and specialist in safety gear, Fox Morgan takes a look through some of the best safety knives available for use in emergencies onboard or overboard.

yachtsman knife

The safety knife is an often neglected tool, typically languishing strapped to a binnacle leg or stowed inside a lifejacket or a belt pouch. until that is, the moment comes to use one in an emergency.

It’s at this point you’ll be eternally grateful that you opted for one of the best safety knives, a good quality bit of kit rather than a cheap, flimsy piece of rubbish that is rusted and brittle and leaves you still in danger or worse, injured as a result.

There’s three styles of safety knife: strap cutters, blunt tipped fixed blades and folding blades.

I recommend you have one of each, at least. Ideally more. Alongside these I also recommend a general purpose sailing knife and multitool.

12 of the best safety knives available today…

A word of warning though: Whichever type of knife you decide upon, do make sure the one you choose is legal, otherwise you could face a fine of up to £5,000.

It’s also illegal to carry a knife in public without good reason, (such as transporting it to or from your boat), unless it has a folding blade with a cutting edge of 3″ or less. For full guidance on knives and the law, visit the relevant section of the gov.uk website .

nrs-neko-blunt

NRS Neko blunt knife

Reasons to Buy: blunt tip for safety, built in bottle opener, single handed operation,

Reasons to Avoid: the bottle opener might be a bit of a novelty

Specifications: length ‎25.4 x 7.37 x 2.03 cm; weight 117.93 Grams, features a bottle opener, stainless steel blade, rubber sheath

It might sound daft, but a blunt knife – blunt at the tip, that is – makes a lot of sense for a product primarily intended to be mounted onto a lifejacket’s accessory tab or for weilding in the cockpit of a boat when it’s luching around and you need to cut a line in an emergency. This makes this style of knife as essential must-have on any boat and if you have space for it, on a belt or within your lifejacket knife pocket.

The Neko features a friction release sheath which is designed for single hand release – simply grip the handle, pull, and off it comes.

The hybrid blade includes a serrated section for quickly cutting webbing and rope, and there’s a sharp smooth section for finer cutting.

The blade’s contoured handle has a rubberised grip for maximum control and there’s an integrated bottle opener which is bound to come in handy!

Gill Folding Personal Rescue Knife

Reasons to Buy: single handed use, good grip, non-snag blade

Reasons to Avoid: hard to use on a flat surface

Specifications: Folded Length 95mm. Open Length 165mm. Blade Length 70mm. Liner lock to prevent accidental closure. Thumb stud for one-handed opening. G10 Composite handle for wet and dry grip. Serrated blade edge for quick and effective rope cutting. Comes with moulded nylon pouch.

The Gill personal recue knife has a rounded serrated blade with a  curve to aide line cutting

It slices through webbing and rope easily, but isn’t easy to use against a cutting mat due to its shape.  When not in use, the blade folds away into the handle leaving you with a compact, safe knife to clip to your belt or buoyancy aid.

The handle has been designed to provide excellent grip in the dry and the wet and its bright orange colour ensures this knife will be easy to spot even in low visibility conditions.

yachtsman knife

Gerber EZ-Out Rescue knife

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, easy to open, very powerful cutting blade

Reasons to Avoid: some may find the blade a little too aggressive

Specifications: Textured handle with SoftGrip, One-hand opening, Full serration with blunt tip, Overall Length: 7.91″, Length Closed: 4.51″, Length of Blade: 3.51/8.9cm”, Weight: 2.6 oz., Blade Material: High Carbon Stainless, Handle Material: Glass-filled nylon with Softgrip Inserts

This knife comes with a lifetime warranty.

yachtsman knife

Palm River Folding Knife

Reasons to Buy: bite grip to help open this knife single handed, comes with a lanyard, locking mechanism is easy to operate.

Reasons to Avoid: a basic blade with one main function. for shackle keys and more you’ll need additional tools

Specifications: 70mm blade,

This Palm branded 70 mm locking blade has a serrated rope-cutting edge and a safely rounded tip.

Its low profile knurled handle fits neatly in a PFD knife pocket, and the bite pull-tab will make you feel like Rambo deploying a grenade, or just make life a bit easier and enable you to open this knife one-handed.

Given this small sized knife and it’s budget price, it’s an ideal knife to have knocking about in the chart table.

Best sailing knifes: 23 options tested

We put knives from Gill, Opinel, Captain Currey, Force 4, Gerber and more to the test….

Choosing a sailing knife

No matter what type of sailing you take part in, some bits of kit are vital for sailors – a sailing knife can save your life. But picking the right one from the huge range on offer can be daunting.

Our writer Duncan Kent got hold of a range of knives to see which is best for a sailor’s needs.

The UK Government’s Knife Law is outlined on its web page here .

The maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife or weapon illegally is either 4 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both. The UK Government says you’ll get a prison sentence if you’re convicted of carrying a knife or weapon illegally more than once.

It is illegal to publicly carry any knife with a blade that can be locked open – regardless of blade length.

The government strongly advise you speak with your local police force to confirm your knife is not only legal, but also that you have ‘good reason’ to be carrying it in public – ie. back and forth to your boat.

Examples given include:

  • taking knives you use at work to and from your workplace.
  • taking knives to a gallery or museum to be exhibited.
  • the knife is going to be used for theatre, film, television, historical re-enactment or religious purposes.

Most likely taking a knife to your boat would be covered in the first condition, but that has not always been proved correct and it will depend entirely on the way the law is interpreted by whoever stops you. If you are charged it will be down to the court to decide whether you had good reason to be carrying that knife at that time.

Best folding knives for sailing.

yachtsman knife

GERBER EZ OUT, approx £34.95

Verdict: Light and very sharp, but a thumb stud would make it genuinely an ‘EZ Out’ device for one handed operation. A rubberised handle would also improve its grip.

Value: 5/10  Performance: 8/10

yachtsman knife

GILL MARINE TOOL, approx £19.95

Verdict: Not the quickest cutter, but a nice looking tool and good value as well – especially considering the smart canvas belt pouch supplied.

Value: 8/10 Performance: 4/10

Currey Bosun knife

CAPTAIN CURREY LOCKSPIKE ‘BOSUN’, approx £28.95

Verdict: Not quite as good at rope or webbing cutting as a serrated blade, but still pretty effective and useful to have the locking spike as well.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 7/10

CAPTAIN CURREY LOCKSPIKE ‘CAPTAIN’,  approx £34.95

Verdict: Chunkier and heavier than the Bosun, but the separate shackle key is more user-friendly. It looks a bit smarter too, being polished stainless steel rather than just matt finish.

Value: 6/10 Performance:  6/10

FORCE 4 POCKET SERRATED , approx £12.95 [Best Budget Buy]

Verdict: Surprisingly sharp and effective for such a small knife and economically priced.

Value: 9/10

Performance: 7/10

GERBER Bear Grylls SCOUT , approx £24.99

Verdict: We liked this knife – it’s well balanced and very sharp, but not too big.

Value: 8/10

Performance: 9/10

GERBER MINI PARAFRAME , approx £9.98

Verdict: Cheap and cheerful little pocket knife for odd little jobs, but clearly not up to the task of serious rope cutting.

Value: 6/10 Performance: 4/10

GERBER ULTRALIGHT , approx £17.99

Verdict: A bit too small for serious rope cutting, but handy to have in your pocket for a number of other jobs.

Value: 3/10 Performance: 5/10

GILL PERSONAL RESCUE , approx £24.95

Verdict: Great to have a serrated blade and a webbing cutter in one and the one-handed opening is a boon for deck work.

Value: 7/10 Performance: 7/10

IBBERSON HEAVY DUTY , approx £28.75

Verdict: A fairly standard looking sailor’s knife, but from top quality stainless steel and is extremely sharp and effective at cutting all types of rope and webbing.

Value: 7/10 Performance: 8/10

INOX FLOATING , approx £12.65

Verdict: Surprisingly good cutter and handy if you particularly need a floating knife for the liferaft, say. Not very pretty, though, and a blade lock and lanyard would improve it considerably.

Value: 8/10 Performance: 8/10

OPINEL CARBON , approx £7.13

Verdict: Not really a yachtsman’s knife, but pretty sharp so would be okay as a GP knife for above and below decks.

SPYDERCO ATLANTIC SALT , approx £85.72

Verdict: A very good cutter, nice and light and easily gripped. Difficult to justify the cost though.

Value: 3/10 Performance: 9/10

WHITBY SAILORS LOCK , approx £11.53

Verdict: Okay for general use, but the 50/50 plain/serrated blade isn’t ideal for serious rope cutting.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 6/10

WICHARD BLADE AND SHACKLE , approx £21.50

Verdict: A pretty basic knife, but with above average cutting performance and the ability to see it easily in the dark is a bonus.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 8/10

BEST SHEATH KNIVES FOR SAILING

Verdict: Looks ideal for clearing prop debris like netting and rope.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 5/10

FORCE 4 RACE RESCUE , approx £37.95 [Top Buy/Recommended]

Verdict: We like this knife for its simplicity, excellent hand grip, thick blade and positive sheath locking action. It was pretty damn sharp too!

Value: 7/10 Performance: 9/10

GERBER BG ULTIMATE , approx £70.00

Verdict: Not cheap but a lot of knife for the money and a serious rope cutting device in an emergency.

GERBER RIVER SHORTY , approx £49.99

Verdict: Good, strong general purpose knife with excellent cutting performance, although just a little short for prop clearing. Good for opening oysters though.

Value: 6/10 Performance: 9/10

GILL MARINE RESCUE , approx £34.95

Verdict: Nice to hold, well balanced and a stout blade, but not particularly sharp.

Value: 6/10  Performance: 4/10

MYERCHIN OFFSHORE/PRO , approx £76.74/£78.39 [Top Performer]

Verdict: Costly, but worth it for the quality of steel, handle and leather pouch. The Pro version was the top performer over all the tests.

WHITBY TEKNO RESCUE , approx £31.26

Verdict: A good all-round sailor’s/diver’s knife ideal for cutting rope from a prop.

The D.H. Russel Boat Knife | Micarata handle Stainless Steel Serrated Blade| M3SW

The D.H. Russel Boat Knife | Micarata handle Stainless Steel Serrated Blade| M3SW

The d.h. russell boat knife #3, boat, army or yachtsman, "love my army knife".

This knife can be sold in different configurations, depending on what sheath you chose.  If you get it with the regular sheath, it is known as the Boat knife due to its triangular shaped handle that helps prevent slippage when wet.

If you get it with the overlap sheath, it is known as the Army knife, or 'Jump Knife' as the paratroopers call it. This was issued to the army for well over 30 years and is still stocked in some kitshops across the country.

If you get it with the sheath with the pouch that holds a marlin spike & shackler, that is known as the Yachtsman's knife. A true favorite over the years with the crew of the Bluenose as well as many Coast Guard and yachting people worldwide.

This meat fork (Fleishe Gabel in German) looks awesome and very well-made, just like my oversized Guede Alpha Brot Messer was. I've received several compliments about it already this year, including a "WOW, that's really cool!" from the Made-In store manager in Austin.

Definitely would recommend Guede knives to anyone who wants quality kitchen knives that will last a lifetime and be passed down to the next generation! Ausgutzeichnet (Excellent)!

Sailing Knife Review: The Ibberson Classic Yachtsman´s Knife

  • January 28th, 2016
  • Sailing Accessories

Did you know that there are regulations of certain regattas forcing every crew member of a boat to carry a sailing knife when on deck? So, despite the fact that most of my sailing friends are assuring I´ll never need such a tool, there must be something to it for official bodies to require having them at dispense. But what is a sailing knife good for and which one to choose from the big variety of available products? Here´s what I gathered about that topic.

Every Skipper needs one. Why?

Since sailors do roam the seas they did have a number of jobs which required having a convenient, small but crafty tool at hand. Opening up knotty ropes, cutting down cords, splicing new eyelets or just having a tool to help eating the daily ration of hard dried fish and stuff. Besides, back then in the Golden Ages of Sail it was not uncommon amongst the mostly shanghaied crews to have fights which could escalate to bloody skirmishes. A knife was the then solution to everything. Well. Of course. A modern day yacht skipper is rarely engaged in a fist-fight nor would he eat his daily meal out of a smelly bowl and have to cut away a finger thick cover of fungi from moldy old bread. But there are definitely some features even in our days a modern sailing knife is made for: Safety is on top, to have a crafty tool for frequently incurring tasks s second. Obviously, the sailing knife´s design did change over the course of the centuries. A once long shaped cork handled weapon turned into a handy small precision tool with fluorescent grabs. What didn´t change too much was its three main purposes.

The Knife Blade: Last Man´s Safety Measure

Knives are for cutting things. Period. And it’s the same with sailing knives. There are occasions when there is no other way to solve a situation by just simply cutting a rope. Harness Rescue is a big thing here: When a skipper goes over board and clings to his lifeline it may hurt more than it may help. Being dragged by a yacht with more than 4 knots could in some circumstances drown the MOB. Sometimes it’s the better way out to just cut that lifeline and not being dragged and pushed under water. Same with capsizing or worse, sinking: Being connected to the boat in that situation could mean to be forced to remain underwater – the harness could hinder reaching the surface.

Cuts through Rope like butter: The short sharp serrated Blade.

Having a sharp blade at hand to quickly cut the rope is a way out. That’s the main feature of a modern day sailing knife: A very strong, short and in most cases serrated blade that will go through a rope like butter. A safety feature could be a rounded tip (we don´t want to stab a fellow crewmate) or a blade-lock for preventing folding blades to snap off a finger or two. The blades should me made of a high grade stainless steel and at the same time demagnetized to not disturb the compass of your yacht. Sharpening and cleaning the knife should be made easy as well as a strong and reliable mode of connecting the tool to your oilskin – whether you like to carry it at your belt or in a pocket of your jacket on a one or two feet long cord.

The Shackle Blade: An indispensable Tool

Shackles are used virtually everywhere on a boat. And who doesn´t know a few of those situation when you need to open one – maybe to turn free a halyard for immediate use – and it is just jammed? Maybe because the halyard has been fixed with too much force on the shackle or maybe the rope hasn´t been in use for a longer period and the shackle just jams. In either case you´d have to be a very strong man to open the shackle – sometimes you would just need mechanical help top open it. That´s where to sailing knife comes into play: Most of them do feature a separate shackle blade.

Can open up rusty jamming Shakles with ease.

It´s  a blade that cannot cut but has different slots for fitting different sizes of shackles. You´d just open the bolt by applying the right slot and utilizing the leverage effect on the shackle. Comparable to opening a bottle of beer the shackle will turn open in a matter of seconds. A very useful tool given the instance that you are on the fore deck in the midst of aggressive moving seas fiddling around and not having the time to go back to have a look into the starboard locker to find a proper tool: You´d just grab into your pocket, have the shackle blade and open the damn jamming thing.

The Marlinspike: A Reminiscence to the Golden Days of Sailing

Marlinspikes are rarely used these days however it is good to have such a tool at hand when needed. Basically a marlinspike would help a sailor do his rope work: Untying ropes and deranged lines such as may occur during or after a hot situation in a regatta or a high-tensioned storm or to open ropes to their different smaller lines when eyes are formed (connecting ropes, lengthen ropes or form eyes).

The Marlinspike

That is a kind of work a normal skipper wouldn´t perform nowadays unless he is on a solo circumnavigation and runs out of spare rope. I rarely reed of marlinspikes in my books of Moitessier, or Knox-Johnston but I do not know a single sailor at present who would tell me he has a frequent use of the marlinspike. Nevertheless, it´s good to have it.

My Choice: The all-time Classic by Ibberson

The market of sailing knives is as full as you would imagine. There are a load of brands, different styles and appearances of knives and of course the respective internet forums are full of vivid discussions on which knife is the best. As being a more conservative skipper I opted for a well-known brand – in fact, Ibberson is established since 1700, unbelievable! – and a well proven knife design.

My Ibberson Sailingknife has three foldable Tools.

My Ibberson Off Shore Yacht Knife features all you´d expect from such a tool. The blade goes easily through both natural hemp-based rope as well as through synthetic fibres. 80 Euros is not a bargain, really, but the material and craftsmanship is extra-heavy and all in all the knife feels sturdy and of a quality as if I could pass this tool over to my children and their grandchildren.

Do you have a sailor´s knife on board and do you used it frequently? Looking forward to your comments.
