Tragic sinking of superyacht Bayesian; Italian prosecutors investigate

Rescue ships operate off Porticello near Palermo, on August 22, 2024, three days after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. All the men missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily -- who included UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch -- have been found, a coastguard official told. The official did not identify Lynch by name, after reports that his was the latest body pulled from the wreck of the "Bayesian", but confirmed that of three men and three women who had been missing, authorities were now only searching for a female. The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout. Among the six missing were UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy. The International Yachting Media is the reference point for boating in the world

The International Yachting Media  is the worlds most widely read  boating magazine . Whit its portal It  broadcast its original contents in four languages and in more than 200 countries in the world developing 950,000 views a week.  The web portal is the main source of information for  yacht  and boat  owners , the place where they can find anything about their  boating passion . If you’re looking for advices on how to keep your sailboat, a tutorial on how to do the " fishermans knot ", to sale your boat or even the closest port to your needs, you came to the right place. The International Yachting Media is, indeed, a real huge web portal that is not limited to the publication of the  magazine  and its news but that, totally for free for charge, offers special sections that range from the  sale of marine equipment  to  boat technical files , from the  ports and anchorages pilot book  - the most complete and most up-to-date one of the Mediterranean - to the possibility of buying and selling a sailboat or a powerboat. Before exploring the various sections of the website, it is important to highlight that  The International Yachting Media is the only portal in the world to be structured as Wikipedia : all users can, in fact, interact with the pages of the portal and modify their contents, contributing to their constant updating and cooperate actively with our team. The secret of our success lies in a simple, functional, engaging communication that, with its many sections, meets all the  boat owners  needs. One of the most visited areas is our  online boating magazine  where, every day, we publish articles that reflect all boat owners interests. Not only press releases about the launch of  new boats  but also  sea trials of super yachts, sailbots or maxiribs  and the corresponding reviews  (not always positive),  how-to articles and useful tutorials for  navigation , insights to  boat shows ,  travel stories and diaries . The  online port pilot book  of The International Yachting Media is the largest and most popular pilot book in Europe and  the only one to have ports and anchorages on the same map . Designed to offer a simple access even from mobile devices, it offers the possibility of having files of ports and anchorages always at your fingertips, with essential information, descriptions, satellite views, photos and videos. Like other sections of the portal, the pilot book is structured in order to be readily available to users.  Everyone can add or update the file of a port or an anchorage  and, after a quick moderation, new informations will be put online. Moreover,  readers contribution will be awarded with the publication of their username in the files they have updated. Among the most visited sections of the portal,  Boats for sale  is particularly relevant. Updated in January 2019, it was made even more user-friendly, safe and captivating. Today, "boats for sale" is the only platform of the market to be 100% free of charge, for both boat owners and brokers. The presence of more than 25,000 ads uploaded clearly shows the great success of the section All you have to do is look for the model of the sail boat or motor boat you want to be able to find it among thousands of occasions. If, instead of a boat, you are looking for second hand marine accessories,  Nautical Classifieds   is the right option for you. Users can add their own ads for free or search the right product/service, from clothing to deck equipment, from boat trailers to berths. Virtual Boat Show  provides users with the complete files of the new models offered by the worlds most prestigious boat manufacturers that, always free, can add their range and make it available to readers.  Boats data sheet , instead, offers the technical files of  more than 15,000 discontinued boats . Like other sections of the portal, all files can be easily updated by users. The innovative services of The International Yachting Media also include  Boat Holidays . This section offers both the opportunity to  host passengers on board your own boat  and the search of another users (or charter) boat anywhere in the world.  This section is the only one of the market to be totally free of charge for both parties . Indeed, transactions are directly managed by the interested parties. Our task is just to put them in touch. The reader can easily distinguish between the offers of charter company and those of private boat owners through the simple, user-friendly graphic design that identifies the category. A new way to enjoy summer holidays and, above all, a new efficient way to give visibility to all those who organize amazing boating holidays on dreamy yachts. Anyone involved in the nautical sector must be aware that, although it is a constantly evolving reality, it is also firmly anchored in traditions and nautical terms that don’t want to be overcome. In order to meet neophytes meets and allow professionals to improve their knowledge, The International Yachting Media makes available its own  nautical dictionary and translator . The latter, too, is totally editable. So that when you’re on a sailboat and you are told to "fuck the mainsail", you will know exactly what they are asking you to do. Last but not least,  Nautical Arts and Crafts  is a section where users are transported within arts and crafts that, between anecdotes and descriptions, pay tribute to all the nautical professions that have become real forms of art over years. • The Complete Guide to Sailing: From Boats to Yachts and Basic Techniques

Ahoy, sailor-to-be! Ever stared into the endless blue sea and wondered how incredible it would be to navigate through the waves, sails hoisted up, and the wind in your hair? You're in the right place! This comprehensive guide will teach you everything you need to know about sailing. Let's hoist the sails and dive right in!

What is Sailing?

Sailing is the art and skill of controlling a boat or a ship by managing its sails. It's a beautiful blend of engineering and elemental nature, where you work with the wind to propel your vessel forward. Kind of like a dance with the elements, wouldn't you say?

Types of Sailing Vessels

There are various types of vessels to consider when sailing. Each comes with its own unique features and benefits.

These are the divas of the sailing world. Luxurious, often equipped with a full crew, and definitely pricey. Yachts are for those who want to sail in style and comfort.

The everyman's choice for sailing. They're more compact and less complex than yachts, making them ideal for beginners. And let's be honest, there's a certain romantic charm in sailing a small boat.

These are the giants of the sea. Ships are mostly commercial vessels that require a significant amount of skill and crew to operate.

Essential Sailing Terms

Ever heard of "luffing," "tacking," or "gybing?" Sailing comes with its own language, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with the terms.

How Sails Work

Understanding how sails work is like understanding the heartbeat of your boat.

This is the primary sail that catches most of the wind. It's like the engine of a car, but powered by nature.

These are secondary sails that catch the wind that the main sail doesn't. Think of it as the supporting actor that steals the show sometimes.

Points of Sail

Knowing your points of sail is like knowing your dance moves in this elemental waltz with the wind.

Close-hauled

This is when your boat sails as close to the wind as possible. It's a bit like driving uphill in a car.

This is when the wind comes from the side of your boat. It's the most comfortable point of sail and similar to cruising on a flat road.

Broad Reach

This is when you're sailing away from the wind. Imagine going downhill with your car; it's easy and fast.

How to sail.

So, you're itching to get out there on the water? Let's cover the basics of how to sail.

Sailing for Beginners

You don't have to be an old sea dog to start sailing. Start small, maybe with a dinghy or a small sailboat. The simpler your vessel, the faster you'll learn the ropes. Think of it as riding a bicycle before you try a motorbike.

Sailing Basics

Understanding the wind direction, knowing how to hoist and lower the sails, and basic steering—these are your ABCs. It's like learning to walk; you've got to start with baby steps.

How to Sail a Boat

To sail a boat, you need to know how to work with your main sail and your jib, how to tack (change direction), and how to use your rudder for steering. It's like driving a car but with many more variables at play.

How to Sail a Yacht

Yacht sailing is a bit more complex, often involving advanced navigation systems, multiple sails, and sometimes even a crew. Think of it as going from riding a bicycle to piloting a jet—you'll need more training, but boy, is it worth it!

Sailing Gear and Equipment

Gearing up is an essential part of sailing. The right equipment can make or break your experience on the water.

Sails for Sailboats

Choosing the right sails is crucial. Materials like Dacron are commonly used for durability and performance. It's like picking the right pair of running shoes.

Sailing Gear

Besides sails, you'll need life jackets, ropes, and possibly a wetsuit. Think of this as your survival kit—you wouldn't go camping without a tent, right?

Sides of a Ship

Port, starboard, bow, stern—the sides of a ship have specific names, and knowing them is crucial for communication and safety. It's like knowing your left from your right; basic but vital.

Sailing Pictures: A Visual Journey

Photography and sailing go together like peanut butter and jelly. Capturing those moments of serenity or adrenaline on the open water is a joy in itself. Ever thought of how a picture is worth a thousand words?

101 Cruises: A Different Kind of Sailing

Cruise ships offer a more laid-back, luxurious form of sailing. While not for everyone, it's like the all-inclusive resort of the sea.

The Importance of Sailing Instructions

Don't underestimate the value of good instruction, be it from sailing schools, books, or experienced sailors. It's like having a mentor in any field—priceless.

Small Sailing Adventures

Who says you need a yacht for an adventure? Small boats can provide just as much excitement. It's like taking a road trip on a motorcycle instead of a luxury RV—both have their own kind of thrill.

Sailing Jib: An Important Component

The jib is more than just a secondary sail; it helps with steering and speed. Consider it the spice in a well-cooked meal; it enhances the experience.

Sailing is a beautiful, multifaceted world filled with opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and even a new lifestyle. Whether you're into small boats, luxurious yachts, or the technical aspects like sails and points of sail, there's something for everyone. Ready to set sail?

So what are you waiting for? Take a look at our range of charter boats and head to some of our favourite  sailing destinations.

FAQs: Embarking on Your Sailing Journey

A small dinghy or a basic sailboat is generally the best for beginners.

The choice often depends on the type of sailing you'll be doing and your level of expertise.

It's strongly recommended to get some basic training or instructions before setting sail.

At the very least, you'll need sails, ropes, and life jackets.

The point of sail refers to the boat's direction relative to the wind.

Sailing the Orkneys: ‘Bryan saw a tall black fin breaking the water, followed by another – it was a pair of orcas’

  • September 9, 2024

Mark Browse sails across the fearsome Pentland Firth, one of the most difficult stretches of water in the British Isles, to explore the remote Orkney archipelago with its UNESCO prehistoric sites

yachting and boating

Sitting on my living-room floor surrounded by tide tables, pilot books, and almanacs, one part of my upcoming voyage around Britain began to excite me more than the rest. I had never been to Orkney before; and although in purely cartographical terms it’s not all that far from the mainland, it seemed intriguingly remote.

It’s full of history and prehistory, and is beautiful to boot. I couldn’t wait to see it.

But we had to get there first. And that involves crossing one of the most fearsome stretches of water in the British Isles: the Pentland Firth.

Goldfinch, our Bénéteau Océanis 36cc, had left her home port of Ipswich in mid-May, and by the middle of June she had arrived in Wick. We spent three nights there, waiting for the weather to be just right for the crossing to Orkney.

Crossing the Pentland Firth

Between the mainland of Britain and the Isles of Orkney lies the Pentland Firth. As the tide coming in from the vast Atlantic Ocean tries to sweep eastwards to the North Sea, it finds itself squeezed into a gap only six miles across.

The result is that this area has the second-fastest tidal streams in the world, reaching up to 16 knots at times. Dangerous tidal races spring up, known as ‘roosts’, like the one known as the ‘Merry Men of Mey’.

This might sound like a comic troupe of Morris dancers, but in breaking seas it can be dangerous. The Orkney and Shetland Sailing Directions, published by the Clyde Cruising Club, goes out of its way to make sure skippers don’t take this passage lightly: it has dire warnings in red ink.

The Firth is not especially wide, so getting across it safely is largely a matter of timing. Pick the right day for the weather, and the right hour for the tide.

Sailing across the Irish Sea: ‘We had never seen such evocative scenery’

The weather forecasts suggested that the right day would be soon, so now I had to work out the best time to leave. As usual, the most trustworthy advice came from the locals.

The harbourmaster at Wick gave me a clear and believable instruction: be off Duncansby Head when it’s high water at Wick. It’s something like 10 miles from Wick to Duncansby Head, so it took us the best part of two hours, motoring in a half-hearted wind.

As we passed Duncansby Head we could see the northern shore of Scotland stretching away to port. A few miles to the west was John O’Groats, and beyond that Dunnet Head, the northernmost point of mainland Britain.

But our destination was further north than either of those. By now the true wind was astern, and the apparent wind almost nonexistent.

The face of the sea was calm; but even in these benign conditions it had a confused quality. Beneath the surface, we could feel Goldfinch’s keel being nudged forcefully in all directions by the contrary currents.

It took about an hour to cross the Pentland Firth. We passed between the southern tip of South Ronaldsay and the small island of Swona, and then up through Hoxa Sound and into Scapa Flow.

Scapa Flow is effectively an inland sea, with only a few channels connecting it to the outside ocean. On a map of the British Isles it looks like just a speck in the middle of the smudge that represents the Orkneys, but up close it is surprisingly big: around eight miles from north to south at the widest point, and 12 miles across.

It was in these sheltered waters that the Royal Navy had its base during the two World Wars, and it was here that the Germans deliberately sank their fleet in 1919, fearing that the ships would be seized by the British. Surrounding Scapa Flow are the islands themselves: mostly green, fairly low-lying land, with gentle hills.

To the west, the towering peaks of Hoy are very prominent, rising far higher than the rest of the landscape. As we motored across towards Stromness, the water was silky smooth, with barely a breath of wind to disturb it.

It was a magical moment. By 2030 we were in the marina at Stromness, all fast.

It had been a good day. The biggest island in Orkney is called, perhaps confusingly, Mainland (here, the landmass of Britain is referred to disparagingly as the ‘Sooth Island’).

We spent a few days on the Orkney Mainland, visiting some of the historic and prehistoric sites that had so excited me when I was planning this voyage. The Stones of Stenness are a mysterious group of standing stones dating back to Neolithic times.

From them, it is just a short walk to the even more impressive Ring of Brodgar, an awe-inspiring circle of stones that is older than Stonehenge.

On the Mainland

In the west of the island is Skara Brae, a Neolithic village that was discovered in the 1850s when a huge storm swept away much of the earth that had covered it for centuries. Like the Ring of Brodgar, it is older than both the Pyramid of Giza and Stonehenge.

Its great attraction is that the houses still contain much of the original stone furniture, and it is easy to see how they were laid out: a central fireplace, a stone ‘dresser’ which seems to have been used for storing or displaying possessions, and stone beds. As with the other Neolithic monuments of Orkney, there are many unanswered questions.

yachting and boating

How did these people get here (presumably they regularly crossed the Pentland Firth in open boats), how did they live, and why did they leave? Archaeologists have been able to infer some of the answers, but there are many tantalising gaps in our knowledge.

The overwhelming impression of the place is that these people, who lived so many thousands of years ago, were not all that different from us. They worked for a living, played, and decorated their houses and bodies.

More recent history has also left its mark on Orkney. To the south and east, some of the smaller islands are connected to the mainland by the Churchill Barriers – massive barricades made of huge blocks of concrete that were put down during the Second World War to help protect the fleet anchored in Scapa Flow.

Situated on Lamb Holm is the Italian Chapel built by prisoners of war who were kept on the island to help with the construction of the barriers. The Italian Chapel is made out of nothing more than a pair of Nissen huts, but the men who built it were not content just to have a room in which to hold their church services.

The Italian prisoners of war decorated the Chapel with exquisite artistry, painting the inside to look like coloured tiles, carved stone, and stained glass, eventually creating a unique place of beauty in their exile.

After a few days on the mainland, we left Stromness, bound for Westray. This passage took us around the western side of Orkney.

At 1319 on 20 June, I wrote in the logbook that we had reached exactly 59° north. This is a record for Goldfinch, and the furthest north I have ever sailed.

It was good to be at sea again. Once we were out of the Sound, almost the whole passage to Westray was under sail, with a fine Force 4 on the beam and a flat sea – perfect conditions.

yachting and boating

The wind gradually picked up during the day, and by the time we arrived in Pierowall harbour on Westray that evening, it had become a bit feisty. Goldfinch has a lot of windage up front, and in any kind of brisk cross-breeze, her bow will get blown around willy-nilly as soon as you slow down to safe manoeuvring speed, even with bow thrusters blaring.

Parking the boat in the little marina was really quite challenging, although we managed to tuck her between two yachts without mishap. Pierowall is in a substantial bay with a half-moon shaped beach of pale sand.

In the implausibly sunny weather we were having, the sea was a deep sapphire blue that would make the Mediterranean jealous.

The next day we took a taxi up to Noup Head on the north-west of Westray. From the lighthouse, there is a spectacular walk along the coast.

The dramatic red stone cliffs are home to hundreds of seabirds such as guillemots, terns, gannets, and puffins. It was a fine breezy day, and the whole lot of them were having a grand time wheeling about in the wind.

To Kirkwall

Our plan had been to return to Stromness so that we could leave Goldfinch there in readiness for the next leg of the circumnavigation in July. But when we got up that morning, the day was grey and blowy.

We chatted to the locals and told them our intentions, and they were unanimously of the opinion that it would be a mistake to go to Stromness that day. The passage takes you outside of the Orkney archipelago, with nothing to the west of you but open ocean.

It had been flat and serene on our way up, but by now the swell had built up, and by all accounts, our journey would have been extremely uncomfortable. A better bet, we were told, was to go to Kirkwall instead.

yachting and boating

The Old Man of Hoy appears in the distance. Photo: Mark Browse

This passage would take us down the middle of the islands, where we might experience some uncomfortable waves as the fast tide met the wind, but it would probably be bearable. It’s always a good idea to listen to the locals.

By the time we left Pierowall that afternoon, some hours later than our original plan the wind had moderated, and for most of the passage we had almost ideal sailing conditions. Some low-lying clouds clung to the islands and occasionally the visibility was poor, but much of the time the sun shone.

We had felt a bit of trepidation when setting out, with rumours of roosts and bone-shaking confused seas, but in the event we had a peaceful passage.

yachting and boating

The majestic sight of two orcas playing made the passage to Kirkwall very memorable. Photo: Mark Browse

Surprise encounter

On the way we passed between the small islands of Faray and Eday. As we sailed through the sound, Bryan saw something that made him exclaim loudly: a tall black fin breaking the water, followed closely by another.

It was a pair of orcas. They were swimming in the same direction as Goldfinch, and only a few boat-lengths away, close enough for us to see quite clearly the black and white patterns on their sleek bodies. ‘Awesome’ is a much overused word these days, but it’s the only way to describe the sight of these beautiful, powerful creatures.

When we left Goldfinch in the last week of June, safely tucked up in Kirkwall, there was a northerly gale blowing in. The boat was rocking, the fenders were squeaking as they took the weight between hull and pontoon, and we had about seven lines securing her to the shore. During our time in Orkney we had had impossibly good weather, but now it was quite unpleasant, and we were all glad not to be at sea.

In July, Goldfinch continued her voyage round Britain, and we took our leave of Orkney, with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Farewell to Stromness playing on the boat’s sound system. It was an amazing trip and I very much hope to return one day.

8 Differences Between Yachting and Sailing

Differences Between Yachting and Sailing | Life of Sailing

Unless you are very involved in the sailing community or own a boat of your own, you may think of yachting and sailing as similar.

In a lot of ways they are, after all, both are boats and both spend their time at sea. But, that’s about the end of the direct comparison.

Sailboats and yachts are very different, each with their pros and cons. Whether you are just curious about what the differences are, or are wondering because you plan to buy a boat yourself you’re in the right place. This article lists 8 distinct differences between yachting and sailing.

Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will have a much better idea about which might be better for you. After all, yachting/sailing isn’t for everyone.

Table of contents

One of the biggest differences between a yacht and a sailboat is its size. A sailboat is likely to be much smaller than a yacht. Of course, some sailboats can be bigger than some yachts but if we are working on average sizes a yacht is going to be bigger. The reason that size matters so much when it comes to picking which boat you are going to purchase (sailboat or yacht) is space. The bigger your boat, the more space you are going to have. This may sound obvious but is one of the most important factors about your boat that people often fail to give their full consideration.

Size matters (when it comes to boats). Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The size of your boat will factor into almost every single thing you do, every day. The smaller your boat the less room you have for storage, the less room you have for emergency supplies, the less room you have for storing even yourself. Your sleeping quarters are not likely going to be very big, regardless of how big your boat is. Depending on how tall you are every inch of space could matter. If you are 6 feet tall and your sleeping quarters are only just big enough, or worse, too small. You are in trouble. It may not immediately bother you. You may even be able to trick yourself into thinking that you are fine curled up into a ball whenever you are trying to sleep. You won’t feel this way for long.

Size matters most when there are more people on your boat than just yourself. If you are planning on living on your boat solo you have a huge advantage space-wise. Whether you have 1 person or multiple you will still need the same kit. A watermaker , water storage, food storage, a first aid kit, a fishing rod, etc. You won’t need 3 first aid kits if you have 3 people on board. All of this means the biggest difference between living solo and living with others is the sleeping room. If you are living solo on a boat that can in theory sleep 4, congrats, you now have a whole lot more storage.

Conversely, if you are planning on living on your boat with someone (perhaps your spouse) then space matters even more. Two people need to be able to move about comfortably. Just because your little sailboat can sleep two doesn’t mean two people will be able to live on it comfortably. If there is more than one of you, you may be better off with a yacht.

For the most part, the yachts are going to be more expensive. Sometimes a whole lot more. For a few reasons, mostly material and technology. The more modern a boat is the more expensive it is likely to be. This isn’t always the case, it is for the majority of the time though. If the price is going to play a big part in which boat you choose to buy here is something you may want to consider; just because a yacht can cost more doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get one. If you are on the fence, it is almost always to spend the extra money on something bigger and better.

When you buy a house, it is not uncommon to buy one to fix it up. Making little repairs and upgrades here and there, in some cases even building an extension. This doesn’t work with boats. The boat you buy is the boat you get. Sure, it can be improved. Repainted, renovated, modernized, but for the most part, it will stay the same size. You need to treat buying the boat the same as you would buying a car in this way. You wouldn’t buy a small hatchback and then build another story on it. The size boat you buy is the size boat you are stuck with. If you need more room, you will need another boat. It will work out much cheaper in the long run if you buy one expensive boat than having to buy a second slightly cheaper one because the first wasn’t up to scratch.

How much the crew will factor into your choice largely depends on budget and the size of the vessel you have your eye on. If you are planning on buying a sailboat, you aren’t going to need (or want) any kind of crew. You are the whole crew, except maybe your family/friends if they happen to live on your boat with you. If you have a yacht, however, its a completely different story. If you are planning on living aboard your yacht you may need one or two crew members to help you out. Even if you are fulfilling the most important role (captain), there will still be lots to do. Navigation, maintenance, and engineering may not be your forte.

If you are planning on buying a sailboat, you can handle everything yourself. There are relatively few computer components that will need working on and chances are you won’t have an engine. Repairs to a sailboat are not easy per se, they are just more manageable for one person. Changing a sail is much easier than repairing an engine. In severe conditions, a small sailboat is simply easier to keep an eye on than a huge yacht. A yacht may require, at the very least, another pair of eyes.

4. Whether or not there is a sail

This difference is purely aesthetic for the most part. Whether or not there is a sail. A sailboat, unsurprisingly, will always have a sail. The nail is how the boat harnesses the wind and what drives it forward. Sailing can be done anywhere, anytime, so long as the weather permits it. Yachting, on the other hand, can be far more limiting. A yacht typically won’t have a sail, which can be seen as either a positive or a negative depending on your outlook. Heres why.

If you are looking for a vessel that is easier to handle, you could argue that a yacht would fit those criteria better. Sure, the computer components are a little more complex and there is more to handle, but sailing itself will be easier. If you have to manage a sail, it can be pretty difficult in stormy conditions. You cant control your sails from inside the cabin. You can, however, steer your yacht from the comfort of the inside.

The advantage of having a sail, as opposed to just an engine, is that you don’t need to worry about fuel. Fuel is not only expensive but a real hassle. You must always keep an eye on your fuel levels when making long voyages or else you risk breaking down at sea. A sailboat can sail so long as there is wind. If you have an extra sail onboard, chances are you will be fine no matter what happens. You are much less likely to get stuck at sea.

5. Engine size

Some sailboats do have motors, albeit small ones. It could just be a trolling motor or as big as a 2 stroke. Regardless of what engine size you have, it is never going to be your primary power source. If you have sails you get your power from harnassing the wind. This, again, can be seen as either good or bad. If you have a small engine you have less to worry about. If you only have the most basic mechanical skills and knowhow you will probably be fine.

A yacht, on the other hand, is a whole different beast. If you don’t know how to work on your yacht in the engine room and you break down you are in real trouble. Owning a yacht can be far more complex than owning a sailboat in this regard. If you don’t anticipate learning how to make these repairs yourself, you are going to need to hire someone who will. Its no good just relying on the marina workshop or a local mechanic, if you are at sea there will be no way for them to get to you. Hiring a crew member with good mechanical abilities isn’t going to be cheap. It is a recurring cost you may want to factor into your budget when deciding whether or not a yacht is right for you.

6. Where they can sail

Big yachts cannot sail in shallow waters. If you are planning on sailing in places with shallow, shale filled, waters then a sailboat is the way to go. The Caribbean, for example, can be hard to navigate in a yacht. At least, harder than it would be with a sailing boat. On the other hand, a yacht can go to many more places than a sailboat.

You could, in theory, sail across the Atlantic in a small sailboat . But, would you want to? It is very dangerous and your boat might not hold up to the intense wind and waves. Additionally, if you are on a sailboat you might be the only crew member. This means there will be no one around to help you should the worst come to fruition, far out at sea. It can be done, you can sail across the Atlantic. But you probably shouldn’t.

7. Technology

In regards to technology, not just whether you are choosing a sailboat or a yacht must be given consideration. How old the individual vessel is, is equally important. An older yacht may not be as technologically advanced as a brand new sailboat . If you do choose to buy a yacht, better technology can open a lot of doors for you. First of all, it can make working on your boat a lot easier. If you have the capability of setting up a fully functioning office with wifi there is no reason you couldn’t just work remotely from your boat.

Technology also opens many new routes for you to take regarding the act of sailing itself. You could sail across the Atlantic with a sailboat, but it would be very risky and very difficult. With a yacht, on the other hand, it can be far easier. Your yacht will come equipped with advanced navigational systems, warning and guidance systems, and much more safety features than a sailboat would. A yacht will be able to plot your route from point to point. On a sailboat, you may not have that luxury.

8. Material

Material matters, whether it is affecting the cost or the sturdiness, it is something to consider. A yacht will be made of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and metals such as titanium. A sailboat, on the other hand, will likely be made from wood or fiberglass. If you are looking for safety and sturdiness above all, and the price is no problem, a yacht will be far safer for you. On the other hand, a sailboat might have the aesthetic you are looking for. You may want a wooden sailboat specifically because you think it looks better.

The material can also factor into how easy it is for you to make repairs. It is a lot easier to patch up a wooden boat than a metal one. With wood, you can make some cowboy fixes on the fly and they will likely hold up until you make it to port. With a yacht, you will need many special tools and training to make big repairs. Again, you may need to hire a crew member to handle that for you on a yacht.

Hopefully, you now have a pretty good idea about the differences between yachts and sailboats. They each have their pros and cons, and can both offer you a world of excitement and adventure. Which boat would be best for you depends solely on your needs. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to which boat to choose, just go with your gut instinct. Hopefully, this article has made the decision a little easier. At the very least.

Popular Sailing Clothing Brands To Wear In 2024

These are the freshest sailing brands for nautical chic looks.

Best Sailing Brands

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Gaastra Online Shop

Whether you’re a seasoned yachty or just getting started on an aspect of sailing you need the right gear to get the job done and one of the most fundamental aspects of sailing is clothing.

When it comes to sailing clothes there’s no discrimination whether you’re racing in the America’s Cup or simply dawdling around in the harbour. Having the right gear can make all the difference especially when technical innovation comes into play to provide unprecedented levels of wind-blocking and waterproofing.

Are we the sailing types? Hell yes, we’re big fans of Sail GP, America’s Cup, and Sydney to Hobart, so we know what sailing gear you should be seen in. So let’s begin.

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen

  • Clothing that can handle the harshest conditions
  • Timeless designs that never go out of style
  • They offer weather-resistant clothing
  • They are fully seam-sealed
  • They’re on the pricier side

In 1877, Mr. Helly Hansen saw a need for clothing that would protect him from the harsh Norweigan elements whilst he was working on his boat. His wife then started soaking linen in linseed oil to create a waterproof material that would protect Mr Hansen and his workers whenever they were out on their boats. They then started offering this clothing to others and Helly Hansen was born.

To this day, Helly Hansen has continued to engineer sailing clothing that can handle the harshest of conditions, enabling their wearers to work, perform and survive just about anywhere. Not only are Helly Hansen garments weather resistant, but the brand’s Norweigan heritage has heavily influenced their minimalistic and timeless, typically Scandinavian design.

Musto

  • The clothing is built for maximum performance
  • It’s very breathable
  • The items are waterproof and windproof
  • The fit is comfortable and keeps you confident
  • It can be harder to take care of

For over 50 years, Musto has been engineering cutting edge sailing apparel. Their sailing clothing has been used by adventurers, America’s Cup racing teams and couples cruising the world on their family yacht.

The brand was started by Mr Keith Musto, a British Olympic sailor who realised in order to win, he had to be lighter, fitter and stronger than all of his competition. After starting his fitness regime, he soon realised that traditional sailing clothing compromised his ability to sail at his best, so he set out to make clothing that would enable him to perform. As a result, he ended up winning the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in his Musto gear.

To this day, Musto continues to engineer fabrics and materials that will allow wearers to be comfortable in any condition.

ZHIK

  • Increased stretch for unparalleled comfort
  • They use outstanding padding to keep you comfortable in all situations
  • Original and attractive designs
  • The buckles are heavy-duty ones that provide extra comfort
  • They don’t have many colours available for all items

ZHIK was founded just prior to the 2004 Athens Olympics when it was noticed that sailing clothing could do with a spark of innovation. Since then ZHIK has engineered some of the highest performing waterproof clothing for sailors and has combined it with a fresh new look that is very modern, in a world dominated by tradition.

They are the kit of choice for both the Australian and New Zealand sailing teams and also sponsor Sail GP and Volvo Ocean Race teams, all of which need technically proficient gear that will handle any condition.

North Sails

North Sails

  • They recycle their old products
  • Versatile products that can be easily styled and used
  • You can choose from multiple colour options
  • They use the GORE-TEX Pro technology to keep you dry
  • The equipment can be quite expensive

North Sails was started by American Sailor and Olympic Gold Medalist, Lowell North in 1957. Originally he focused on making the most technically advanced sails that were faster than any competitors. The brand continues to make these ultra-high performance sails and has used their ethos to also create a lifestyle clothing line.

Their sailing clothing combines both function and form which performs in harsh conditions and looks great doing it. They offer a range of technical, high-performance gear as well as a more traditional lifestyle line so no matter your style of sailing, North Sails will have you covered.

Nautica

  • They focus a lot on design
  • They mix traditional and modern styles
  • The clothing is more affordable
  • Many designs feature zipped pockets for more security
  • Their clothing is not that technically advanced

Born in 1983, Nautica is a leading lifestyle brand for men. Influenced by the nautical lifestyle and designs, Nautica has focused more on making everyday clothing for men as opposed to other sailing clothing brands that were born out of a need to defeat the elements.

Whilst Nautica might not offer sailing clothing that is as technically advanced as others, their focus on design has enabled them to lead the industry from a style perspective. They combine both traditional nautical designs with a modern perspective and forward-thinking styles.

Henri Lloyd

Henri Lloyd

  • The brand relies on constant innovation
  • Their waterproof clothing is aesthetically pleasing
  • They use a non-corrosive zipper
  • You get 15% off on your birthday if you join the community
  • You have to spend a lot for free delivery

Henri Lloyd was founded by Henri Strzelecki a Polish war hero and Angus Lloyd in 1964 in Manchester, England. They pioneered the use of waterproof fabrics and materials in clothing. They also made other innovations including the first non-corrosive zipper as well as the use of velcro in waterproof garments.

To this day Henri Lloyd continues to innovate in order to remain on the leading edge of waterproof clothing. They also focus heavily on design and offer some of the most aesthetically refined waterproof sailing clothing available.

Slam

  • They collaborated with current and former Olympic sailors
  • Their pieces resemble an Italian effortless relaxed style
  • You get 10% off your first order when subscribing to the newsletter
  • Great when you’re about to face the harshest weather conditions
  • They use recycled materials
  • Some items run large according to buyers

Born in Genoa, Italy, Slam has evolved to be one of the greatest sailing clothing manufacturers, all thanks to their collaborations with past and present Olympic Sailors. Genoa itself is a town on Italy’s Ligurian coast and its history is heavily rooted in fishing, sailing and its port. Naturally, one day a garment maker would come about as a result of the town’s need for clothing that is suitable for life on the coast and at sea.

Today the brand offers a range of lifestyle and recreational sailing clothing which embodies Italian effortless cool. They also offer technical garments for those looking to face the harshest conditions mother nature can throw at them.

Gill Marine

Gill Marine

  • You get 10% off your first order when subscribing to their newsletter
  • They are backed by 45 years of experience
  • They offer excellent breathability and waterproofness
  • The relief zip is durable and waterproof
  • The ventilation is outstanding
  • Some pieces do not have enough pockets

In 1975 a passionate dinghy sailor, Nick Gill became increasingly frustrated with the lack of dinghy-specific sailing gear. To mitigate the problem, he founded a company and started to produce the gear he wanted. Since then, Gill has continued to evolve and develop to create clothing for all facets of sailing and all conditions sailors encounter.

Gill is the sailing clothing of choice for current America’s Cup champions, team New Zealand. To complement their clothing, Gill also offers footwear and accessories for sailors.

Prada

  • Fashion forward and super cool
  • Some garments are made from technical fabrics
  • No discounts
  • More for fashion than actual sailing

If you want to go big and be the best dressed on the yacht, then Prada’s America’s Cup range is the way to go. Prada is the official sponsor of Italy’s Lunar Rossa. One of the challengers in this year’s big race. Their gear is very basic in design but goodness it’s cool.

Spitfire Superyacht

The new 164-footer, christened Spitfire on account of her grunt, pairs a sleek, sporty, and somewhat utilitarian exterior with a luxurious, amenity-plenty interior. Bannenberg & Rowell executed the design, while fellow British outfit Lateral Naval Architects spearheaded the engineering.

Spitfire is lightweight in construction but punchy in terms of performance and range, according to Bannenberg & Rowell. The studio didn’t share any details regarding the propulsion system but says the “super-nimble” yacht can cruise “electrically and silently,” can hit 22 knots, and cover up to 3,500 nautical miles.

yachting and boating

Spitfire is designed to run like a workhorse but offers all the requisite mod cons. Bannenberg & Rowell has stuck with the old naming conventions in a nod to the newcomer’s military roots. The layout includes buddy quarters (guest cabins) and a wardroom (salon) with an opening roof, as well as a scramble station (helm) and a fun store (gym). The owner doesn’t just get a lavish suite, but also a private, forward area with a Jacuzzi. Other highlights of the yacht include an outdoor cinema, a grill, and a beach club with fold-out terraces.

Spitfire is one of Bannenberg & Rowell’s smaller and more understated creations. The studio previously penned a 367-foot superyacht with two cinemas, two jacuzzis, a large wellness center, a 33-foot pool, a DJ station, and a jazz bar, for example. That may have resulted in a shorter production time. Bannenberg & Rowell says the vessel is due to be delivered in 2026.

More awful tragedies at sea - like the sinking of superyacht Bayesian - will happen again and again unless the world fights climate change now, experts have warned.

Mike Lynch , who was described as "Britain's Bill Gates" for his success in the tech industry, and his teenage daughter were among the seven people killed after the vessel was struck in a powerful storm last month. It is thought the weather caused a freak water spout , which develop downwards in thunderstorms, and this struck the boat's huge mast.

Freak storms have happened across the Mediterranean this summer and last due to climate change, meteorologists have told the Mirror . A fierce storm battered Formentera, a small Balearic Island, on Wednesday August 14, sinking several boats. Dramatic footage seen by the Mirror shows at least one sailing vessel sent crashing into rocks because of the sheer force of the wind. One experienced fisherman wrote online the storm was "e very sailor's worst nightmare."

And a rare storm, known as a Medicane (Mediterranean hurricane), pounded western Greece at the end of August. Streets were flooded, trees uprooted and residents across the Ionian islands of Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Ithaca experienced power cuts.

These are happening because climate change is causing temperatures to rise - to hotter than 40C in places this summer - and so huge amounts of energy are in the atmosphere above land and sea across the Mediterranean, climate change experts told us. This is making storms more intense and the consequences could continue to be catastrophic.

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel , told the Mirror : "I am very concerned about this. It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it's when and where.

"In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - Mediterranean hurricanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 "Daniel" medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there. The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms.

"In the eastern coast of the Med, between Cyprus and Israel, we had some massive thunderstorms last April, when the number of flashes we picked up with our lightning detection system was more than 400,000 in 24 hours, which is totally off of the charts.

"I would argue that we have seen considerably more unusual or severe events that constitute deviations from the normal. These have become more noticeable because we are in a disrupted state (of climate change)... So most definitely climate change plays a role. The Mediterranean basin is a climate change hotspot, and is warming faster than most regions on Earth. Already, we exceed the global average and are warmer by +1.5C, compared to the 1951-1980 average, which is usually considered the benchmark for comparison."

The bodies of Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the vessel , along with Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were recovered among the wreckage of the Bayesian, one of the world's largest sailing yachts.

Mr and Mrs Morvillo, and Mr and Mrs Bloomer did not drown, but instead suffocated to death in air bubbles that filled with carbon dioxide , it was claimed this week. The four tourists reportedly had no water in their lungs, raising the harrowing possibility they may have been conscious as the yacht sank.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica claimed the lungs of banker, Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife Judy were "not full of water and neither were their stomachs or trachea". They have also reported that the couple "suffocated" after oxygen ran out in an air bubble below deck that had formed after the yacht sank. Dr Lynch also died of suffocation due to a lack of oxygen, his autopsy on Saturday showed.

Around 12mm of rain was forecast to fall in just three hours across Porticello, Italy, near where the boat was anchored overnight on Sunday August 18 to Monday August 19. Downpours and gusts battered the boat, which is understood to have capsized.

Speaking to the Mirror , Dr Pedro Beltran-Alvarez, senior lecturer in Health and Climate Change at University of Hull, said he was "not surprised" to see the recent frequency of intense storms across Italy and nearby countries. He said the Mediterranean is "one of the most vulnerable" areas of the world to the impact of climate change.

The academic, who has worked at University of Hull for nine years, continued: "It is not surprising that we are in this situation. The Mediterranean is one of the most vulnerable places to climate change. It is vulnerable because of the latitude, the position it is in really so there is nothing we can do about it in terms of the geography of this region.

"Extreme weather events are expected to increase over the next decade or so, and that is because of climate change. There could be more tragedies like that in Sicily and people who are particularly vulnerable to megastorms, for example, are people living by the sea, so fishermen, people going on yachts, or people travelling by sea or people going on cruises. So the key, I think, is to know your vulnerabilities.

"I think something like 90 per cent of the general population in the UK is either concerned or very concerned about climate change. In my professional field, climate change is accepted as the biggest health threat to humanity this century so everyone in public health knows climate change is the greatest challenge to public health. I am reasonably concerned based on the science but this also presents an opportunity to tackle it.

"I spent a few weeks in Catalonia each summer and see first-hand the impacts of climate change. I think this year the hottest day where I was 43C. It is really difficult to do anything between 1pm and 6pm, and there is concern there for vulnerable people. Everyone is vulnerable to climate change but specific groups of the population are particularly vulnerable, especially the elderly or those dementia, for example, but climate change is, I always say, inclusive by design."

Italian authorities have expanded their investigation into the deaths of the seven people on the yacht to include two crew members as well as the captain, according to news agencies in the nation.

The investigation is now said to include ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith. Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step. Currently, the Bayesian rests on its right side at a depth of approximately 50m (164ft).

An armed guard assigned to Dr Lynch during his US trial - after which he was cleared of fraud charges - recently spoke of their unlikely friendship. Rolo Igno said he believes Mike and Hannah "woke up in a better place" . He spoke of Hannah as a "beautiful soul" and of Dr Lynch as "one of the most extraordinary individuals I've ever known".

Mr Igno said: "I don’t know what everyone’s beliefs are, but I believe that Mike and Hannah woke up in a far better place. Till we see each other again. Hannah, take care of your daddy up there for me. Down here, I’ve got your mom and sister."

Mr Igno said the last time he saw Dr Lynch, he had thanked him for opening his Chelsea home, his Loudham (Suffolk) estate and "beloved Bayesian" to him and his family.

He added: "Over the past year, I had the privilege of spending almost every waking moment with Mike while he was in custody in San Francisco. I was part of the security detail, tasked with ensuring he didn’t escape and flee the country. It was unlike any other detail that I’ve ever worked and would later discover a life-changing one."

The 2023 superyacht summer recap: Jeff Bezos is now king of the high seas

  • For billionaires and their celebrity friends, warm weather means it's yacht season.
  • Jeff Bezos recently debuted his $500 million megayacht Koru, which criss-crossed the Mediterranean.
  • Here's a recap of some superyachts that made headlines this summer — and the famous faces spotted on them.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos made headlines in 2019 for a rare appearance partying at sea on David Geffen's yacht, the Rising Sun , with ex-Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and model Karlie Kloss.

Four years later, Bezos is no longer Amazon's CEO, and he's spent the last few months earning a new title: king of the high seas. As 2023's yacht season comes to a close, it's clear that Bezos' brand new $500 million superyacht won the summer.

Many of the world's rich and famous have shied away from being spotted vacationing on yachts . Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made that mistake early in the season, sparking backlash after hosting a lavish soiree overlooking a bevy of yachts on the French Riviera, just weeks after the Hollywood writer's strike kicked off.

But Bezos and his superyacht guests appear undaunted by coverage of their travels.

Bezos named his megaboat Koru, after a Maori symbol of growth (perhaps a reference to being the world's largest sailing yacht at 417 feet long) and new beginnings.

Koru took its maiden voyage to Gibraltar in April, and a flurry of photographed stops followed: In May, a shirtless Bezos and his now-fiancee Lauren Sanchez — who has a striking resemblance to the sculpture on Koru's bow — took the yacht for a spin off the coast of Spain, before sailing it to the Cannes Film Festival.

In June, Koru made its way to the Italian Riviera , where the couple posed for photos on the ship's deck. Then it stopped by the Italian island Capri, before posting up at nearby Positano, a cliffside town that's become a favorite of celebrities and travel influencers.

There, the yacht played host to an engagement party for Bezos and Sanchez , which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, the couple was seen strolling the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Yacht season's runner-up: billionaire Barry Diller's Eos

Another highlight of this year's yacht season was the 305 foot-long Eos, owned by billionaire Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, which also had a busy summer criss-crossing the Mediterranean.

A staple of superyacht season, Eos' 2023 summer schedule included an early stop in Mallorca , where Diller and von Furstenberg hiked with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King; a trip to Greece where von Furstenberg visited with British Vogue editor Edward Enninful and Valentino cofounder Valentino Giancarlo Giammetti; and a stop on the Amalfi Coast where von Furstenberg snagged a picture with Kris Jenner.

In August, the ship made its way to Croatia, where its owners dined with Hollywood A-listers Candice Bergen, Emma Thompson, and Jason Blum, as well as Diane Sawyer and Creative Artists Agency partner Bryan Lourd.

The Eos docked in Venice to end its summer season, where von Furstenberg hosted the annual DVF Awards — and began furnishing one of her dry-land residences.

Not too far away in Venice's harbor was Maìn, Giorgio Armani's yacht, on which he hosted guests like Sydney Sweeney and Kerry Washington as part of his One Night Only fashion event earlier this month.

Many of the world's other famous superyachts — and the folks who frequent them — appear to have largely avoided the public eye this summer.

"In a world of long-lens constant paparazzi, there is a place for relaxed privacy that many of us take for granted," a longtime superyacht employee, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, recently told Insider.

That's likely the privacy that Geffen is enjoying on the Rising Sun, the yacht where Bezos was photographed a few summers ago — and on which Geffen infamously self-isolated in March 2020.

While the ship has been keeping a low profile this yacht season, it's reportedly been spotted in Capri and Mallorca , though without its typical celebrity entourage on board. Most recently it made a splash in a place not typically known for attracting the world's most expensive crafts: Portland, Maine.
