Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Designed by Jan Linge, the Soling won a design competition to develop a new Olympic class to replace the Dragon. It was the Olympic 3 man keelboat from 1972 until 2000. The Soling’s lively performance makes it an excellent teaching boat. It’s responsive enough to provide instant feedback, but stable enough to avoid getting wet. Experienced sailors will enjoy the Soling’s outstanding upwind performance and extensive sail and rig controls. Our Solings are rigged with self tacking jibs which are perfect for sailing single handed or with inexperienced crew.

Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF)
Who owns it.
United States Sailing Association sanctions regional authorities to administer the national rule and develop regional by-laws.
Why Did It Start
Loosely based on the “Arbitrary Fleet” of the West Coast of the 1940’s, PHRF emerged in the early 1980’s as an empirically based handicapping system to give sailors easier access to a handicap than afforded by measurement rules.
How It Works
PHRF handicaps are assigned by individuals or committees associated with specific fleets. Handicaps are assigned to a given production class considering predominant local conditions and the handicapper’s experience in handicapping similar boats. These ratings are based on observed performance and any requisite adjustments generally become evident after 5-10 races have been sailed. Scoring options include Time-on-Distance or Time-on-Time .
Recommended Values |
A | 650 |
B Factor | When Used |
480 | Heavy Air or all off the wind |
550 | Average conditions |
600 | Light air or all windward work |
A TCF = —————— B + PHRF
Who Uses It
Historically used for USA casual fleet racing, PHRF has grown be be accepted as a division in several major national races, as well.
Where We Fit In
The US Sailing PHRF Committee is charged with the development and maintenance of the national rule, including the national appeals process . While handicaps are assigned locally, US Sailing provides certain standards and guidelines to maintain a degree of consistency between fleets. Additionally, as a member benefit, US Sailing develops the PHRF Fleet Handicap Book– a compilation of yacht base handicaps by class from more than 60 PHRF Fleets throughout North America listing over 5000 classes. The Offshore Office also offers administrative and handicapping services to participating PHRF Fleets. The term “Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF)” is protected by copy-rightfor use by US Sailing and sanctioned regional fleets.
PHRF certificates are assigned by each local fleet. Be sure to check your Notice of Race to ensure you are certified by the appropriate fleet. Basic hull, sail, and rig details are owner declared and ratings assigned by class.

Soling Rigging
I am in the process of fixing up a soling sailboat. I have tried to look on line but I have not found a list of standing rigging diagrams or size and length of lines. Thought i would ask here if anyone has any advice. The boat is currently rigged, with mast and boom not connected, but has been sitting outside uncovered for a few years so all the lines are damaged. One option is to take each one out and measure each one. Any advice on colour coding would be appreciated. Thank you
We raced a Soling for about a dozen years, including CORK and other major events. Owners often "personalized" their boats with controls that have more or fewer sheaves for mechanical advantage, so a standard length for anything is going to be difficult to find. Likewise, line diameters for sheets and controls will also vary according to how hard you have to pull and how often adjustments are needed - how tired your hand gets or how much it hurts. You may set the jib Cunningham at the start of the day and only change it once all day. The vang, backstay, outhaul and main Cunningham will need adjusting each time you go from upwind to downwind. Line has also developed since Solings were an Olympic class in the '70's, so really thin line - which can hurt your hands- is now strong enough to put just about anywhere on the boat. The jibsheet, mainsheet and travellers (most Solings are self-tacking) get a lot of use on a Soling, so using a line that feels comfortable "to hand" for these lines is probably the way to go. Your "damaged" lines are probably serviceable, but dirty. It might make sense to wash them before replacing them, and see if that helps. Some people put them in a washtub with dish soap and swish them around, then rinse. Others run them through washing machines. Your call. Color-coding is up to you too. I like red fleck for spinnaker-related items. (halyards, sheets, topping lift...) Blue fleck for jib (halyard, sheets, traveler, Cunningham... ) White/no fleck for main.... Maybe another color for the rigging (forestay, backstay, shrouds...) Some people go wild, with yellow for one thing, green for something else, black for a third... There can be so many controls that having a different color for each can get quite confusing.

If it was a road trailer I think $1800 would be a good investment. Anyone out there sailing a Soling that was originally sailed at Offshore Sailing School on City Island.
