Junior sailing news.
This past summer San Diego Yacht Club had the honor of hosting the 2024 CHUBB Triple-Handed National Championship for the Sears Cup. This event was a momentous experience made possible by long hours contributed by Junior Program staff, volunteers from our membership and SDYC staff on every level. The Sears Cup entry list boasted 17 teams, meaning 68 competitors, from 10 of US Sailing recognized areas across the country.
On August 1st, my skipper Anton and I got the opportunity to travel to Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club, in New Jersey to compete in the 2024 C420 National Championship. When we first arrived at the venue, we were greeted with hot and humid weather and very good breeze. The four practice days were relatively the same, starting out around 8 knots, and then eventually building to a 13-16 knot sea breeze. On the first day of the regatta, we experienced very similar conditions to the practice days, which allowed us to excel, achieving a 1st, and two 4ths.
My crew, Wyatt Kelly and I recently traveled up to Redwood City in the Bay area to compete in the 2024 C420 North American Championship. This was our second year participating in this event. 106 participants were registered for the regatta.
Recently, my team and I attended the Rose Cup Youth Match Race Nationals. The event was held in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and spanned over five days. The first two days were composed of extensive debriefs, boat handling, and on-the-water practice. The priority was to get all the teams up to match racing speed. The renowned coach Dave Perry led the regatta and clinic teaching all the sailors the intricacies of match racing. Match racing in a nutshell is two boats that sail against each other with certain rules related to this style of sailing. Each boat sails against every other team in a round-robin series. After the round robin is complete, the top eight teams move to a quarter finals, then a semi-finals, and finally the last two boats remaining sail to the best of three against each other.
This past week we, Julia Stewart and Bennett Simpson, flew as a team to Bristol, RI to compete in the US Youth Champs in the 29er fleet. It was a great experience and we learned many lessons from it. A few of our goals for this event was to go out there and have fun, work on communication, and get experience sailing in heavy breeze. We both are so proud of how we have come together as team and have accomplished all of those goals.
We (Kevin Cason/skipper and and Holland Vierling/crew) recently attended our 3rd US Sailing Youth Championship, this year located in Bristol, Rhode Island. This was a super fun regatta for us. So cool to see our growth as a team over the past 3 Youth Championship races. I(Holland) showed up sleepy after a long redeye flight, and immediately ran into the US Sailing Coaches -Phil and Rosie. They let me jump in their coach boat on the way to another race. An hour later I was competing in the Bridge to Bridge race from Newport to Bristol, RI on a Wingfoil - and I ended up placing 1st for Wingfoil! What an amazing experience!
The 7th annual San Diego Olympic Classes Regatta (OCR) rolled out on a perfect June weekend. The classic San Diego "June Gloom" burned off quickly and a nice westerly filled in for the majority of both days. With winds ranging from 7-14 kts, and modest little swells running down the course, 28 sailors in three classes completed seven races on a trapezoid course located just south of Point Loma on the Coronado Roads.
This month I went to Toms River, New Jersey to compete in the 2024 Waszp Atlantic Coast Championships. The competition was intense and very high, with the majority of the competitors having world and national titles.
When I arrived the first day, I put together the charter boat that was given to me from the SailGP Inspire Program. While in the boat park, I met some sailors from Hawaii and the America One Racing Team who invited me to train with them that day. Once we got our boats rigged and ready, we all headed out for a nice 12 kt session.

Batten down the hatches. The trailer for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 just arrived. It’s messy, and as expected, we will soon see the faces of Daisy Kelliher and Gary King back onboard. When these two yachties last saw each other, they were at odds, and as Season 5 teases, not much has changed.
“Going into this season, I got rid of some dead weight ,” Daisy explains at the start of the trailer. “The breakup did a number on me last year. I felt very broken. But now, I’m coming back in more focused, full of energy, and I f*cking good at my job. And I’m taking back the reigns,” she quips, like a boss bish.
“It’s gonna be a sh*t show,” Daisy continues, as the cameras expertly cut to her yelling at Gary, the literal definition of her words. “Guess what? We have a f*cking job to do, and I’m not f*cking carrying this season on my own, you f*cking prick!”
Luckily for Daisy, a new beau is onboard to help distract her from last season’s love triangle mess . Deckhand Keith Allen catches her eyes, and it seems her affections are shared, as Keith asks Gary, “Daisy would make a good wife. No?”
Gary laughs. But Captain Glenn Shephard is not laughing, as several beats later, his crew entertains their charter guests a bit too hard on land.
“You guys went out with some guests. I set some ground rules. Two drinks maximum. You knew the rules, you broke the f*cking rules, and now you’re here, getting upset,” a frustrated Captain Glenn tells his team, as Daisy later states that she is “f*cking done.”
There’s also blood , broken dishes, a fire, and lots more. But sadly, there is no Colin MacRae .
Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.
TELL US – CAN GARY AND DAISY GET BACK TO A GOOD PLACE, OR HAS THIS (FRIEND)SHIP SAILED FOR GOOD? BUT ALSO, ARE YOU SHOCKED TO SEE GARY BACK, AND IN A NON-EDITED-OUT FASHION?

Last year, Seth Myers entertained them during a 40-minute set that poked fun at the tech industry’s liberal use of self-affirmations. On Thursday, the roasting came courtesy of comic John Mulaney, who, like Myers, reportedly used elements of his standard routine but leaned into roasting the tech crowd specifically, much to their delight. “Let me get this straight,” Mulaney reportedly said.

Calling all university student sailors! The Green Blue, the environmental programme of the RYA has officially begun the 2024-25 University Sailing Sustainability Challenge (USSC) , running until February 2025.
Since it started back in 2015, the USSC has encouraged University Sailing Clubs (USCs) across the UK to adopt more sustainable practices, and this year marks an exciting change as there is a new official sponsor, the Royal Thames Yacht Club .
The 2024-25 Challenge, backed by the British Universities Sailing Association (BUSA) , introduces a new judging criterion, offering University Sailing Clubs (USCs) in the UK greater creativity and flexibility in their sustainability efforts. Clubs appoint a Sustainability Officer who commits to The Green Blue Boating Pledge and focuses on four of eight categories, such as reducing waste and combating climate change. Throughout the challenge, clubs complete tasks and submit evidence to the judging panel, earning a USSC certificate of achievement.
An exciting opportunity for clubs and students to really show what they can do; the panel awards all clubs who participate and complete their tasks with an official USSC certificate of achievement. The judging panel also score all submissions with the top four participants being selected to receive a prize at the USSC Awards Ceremony, held during the prestigious RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show in February 2025.
“We, the university community, benefit hugely from being a part of then The Green Blue challenge. Through the challenge we push ourselves, our clubs, and the clubs we sail at, to be more sustainable and to look at the ways in which the sailing community can support the protection of our waterways and our planet” said Amelie Sadler, Vice Chair at BUSA - British Universities Sailing Association.
"The younger generation of sailors are the future of the sport and it's amazing how many of them are passionate about sustainability. By getting involved in the USSC, it's a great way for individuals and university clubs to not only earn recognition but also set an example for the wider boating community. The work they do can make a real difference in protecting the environment, both in the present and for years to come.” said Kate Fortnam, Campaign Manager at The Green Blue.
Last year an impressive 14 universities successfully completed the Challenge, showcasing their dedication to fostering sustainable values within their clubs. This year, with the support of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, The Green Blue anticipate even greater participation and impact.
“At the Royal Thames Yacht Club, we are committed to the adoption of sustainable practices both within the Club and on the water, and as such are delighted to be supporting the excellent University Sailing Sustainability Challenge. Our young people are the future, and it is critical that future is sustainable. May we thank all participants in this most worthy of causes.” said Richard Powell, Vice Commodore at the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
If your club would like to be part of the challenge, visit The Green Blue’s website to find out more, sign up or contact us at [email protected].
