WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Many of our students also find that some of the theory courses help them to better understand some of the more technical elements of the course. If you have completed the RYA VHF, RYA First Aid or RYA Day Skipper theory course, you will find that you are able to put into practice some of the information that you have learned on the Intermediate Powerboat course.

Due to the more technical nature of this course compared to others, we have set a minimum age for students on the Intermediate Powerboat course of 16 years old.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The RYA Intermediate Powerboat course will give you the opportunity to plan a cruise by daytime. You will have the opportunity to participate in two cruises – one by traditional methods of navigation and the other by GPS.

During this course you will have the opportunity to develop your existing safety and boat handling to the standard required for longer passages in more complex scenarios.

A guide to RYA powerboat training for drivers

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced driver, there’s always something new to learn about being on the water.

Why should you consider powerboat training?

In most countries you have to pass a driving test and get an official licence before you can legally drive a powerboat or RIB. There’s no such requirement in Britain (except for very large yachts). Powerboat training and certification are voluntary. Although contrary to what you might expect there are actually fewer boating accidents in UK waters than in many countries that do insist on a formal driving licence.

That said, it’s extremely unwise to take to the water without any knowledge or training. There are plenty of pitfalls including some real potential dangers and many of them can’t be avoided with just common sense.

Boating is statistically very safe in Britain because most people get themselves trained to a higher level than the bare minimum required by a basic exam. The RYA’s (Royal Yachting Association) training scheme is the international gold standard for recreational boating and its certificates are widely recognised abroad.

Good reasons to get trained

There are many good reasons to sign up for at least one training course.

  • First and foremost, you will definitely get a lot more enjoyment from your boating if you know what you’re doing – and so will your family and friends.
  • If you own your own boat, your insurance premium will almost certainly be lower and your maintenance and repair bills are likely to be much smaller, too.
  • A good working knowledge of tide, weather and sea conditions is absolutely essential for safe boating in coastal waters
  • Aa training course will teach you some very useful skills, such as high-speed boat handling techniques and parking manoeuvres, which are difficult to figure out on your own.
  • Just like driving a car, you need to understand the ‘rules of the road’ including some that aren’t obvious or intuitive.
  • A boating certificate also enables you to hire boats and yachts on holidays abroad, charter a boat, or to take your own boat overseas.

rya powerboat level 3 what can i drive online

Learn locally, or on holiday

There are RYA recognised Training Centres all around the UK. Also, you can do courses in places like Greece, Spain and the Caribbean, combining a hands-on boating course with a holiday and learn the essential skills in hot, sunny weather. Although if you plan to do the majority of your boating in tidal waters, it is worth doing a course in tidal waters. In the UK there are powerboat charter companies and boat sharing Clubs, many of which also offer approved RYA training as part of the induction process.

Most Training Centres are geared up to teach a whole family, either on the same course or on different courses appropriate to their age, knowledge and ambitions. A further option for boat owners, offered by some training centres, is to arrange private tuition from an RYA instructor on your own boat. The obvious advantage of this is that it allows you to learn and practice on the same type of boat that you’re going to be using.

Beginners start here

The RYA scheme starts with two beginners’ courses: Level 1 Start Boating and Powerboat Handling Level 2. Neither of them assume any prior knowledge of boating. (Both courses are offered by  Trafalgar Powerboat Training  too!)

Level 1 is a one-day introductory session out on the water that covers the basics and gives you the knowledge and skills to drive a boat safely under the supervision of a more experienced person.

Level 2 is the course for you if you want to be independent and self-sufficient on the water. You don’t need to have completed a Level 1 course; you can go straight in at this level. It’s a two-day, hands-on course that covers the essentials you need to enjoy your boat safely in good weather conditions:

  • launching & recovery
  • boat handling and manoeuvres
  • parking techniques – mooring, anchoring & coming alongside
  • man overboard rescue
  • and much more.

Most insurers expect boat owners to have a Level 2 certificate, or to demonstrate that they have equivalent experience. It’s also the minimum qualification for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), which you will need if you want to drive boats and yachts abroad.

Essential boating knowledge

After passing your Level 2 course the next step, if possible, is to practice the skills you’ve learned and get some experience. This may be in your own boat, on a holiday or as a member of a shared boating club such as  Boat Club Trafalgar .

At the same time, you can start preparing for the RYA Day Skipper course. This is a ‘shore-based’ boating theory course that equips you with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to confidently and safely navigate your boat:

  • weather forecasting
  • collision avoidance
  • emergency and safety procedures

There’s a lot to learn: about 40 hours of teaching followed by two exam papers. The Day Skipper course can be taken either as a series of short sessions, by distance learning online or as a one-week intensive course. It might seem like a bit of hassle, yet so much crucial and useful knowledge is packed into in this course that it really is worthwhile. Most people tend to do it in the winter months in preparation for the next season.

Intermediate and advanced courses

The next practical on-the-water training course in the RYA scheme, Intermediate, is a two-day session geared towards people who want to go off cruising in large motor yachts and drive high-performance powerboats. The course syllabus assumes that you already have the practical skills and experience of Level 2, plus all of the knowledge that’s covered in the Day Skipper course. It’s strongly recommended that you also have a first aid certificate and a marine VHF radio operator’s licence.

The Intermediate course content includes:

  • cruise planning
  • boat preparation
  • practical pilotage and navigation
  • more advanced boat-handling and manoeuvring techniques
  • more rigorous man overboard rescue training

An advanced boating theory course called Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore follows on from Day Skipper, with another 40 hours of learning and three exams. You’ll need to do that (or at least have the equivalent level of knowledge) before tackling the Advanced practical powerboat course. This is the course for adventurous boaters and for professional boat drivers, training you for:

  • longer trips
  • navigation at night
  • boat handling in challenging weather and sea conditions

The Advanced course is arguably a bit more advanced more than the average leisure RIB or powerboater actually needs. However, it’s highly recommended if you’re planning to go off on an extended cruise.

Specialist skills and informal training

The RYA also offers a range of short, specialist courses that are very useful for some types of boating. These include subjects like radar, sea survival, first aid, VHF radio and diesel engine maintenance.

Most RYA Training Centres can also offer informal training on request – perhaps a one-day refresher course if you haven’t been on the water for a while, or a boat-handling session if you’ve plenty of experience in other types of boats but are either new to fast powerboats and RIBs, or want a session in your own boat.

However, much training you have, it’s no substitute for going out on the water and building up hours and days of practical experience, driving your own boat or other people’s.

Even after years of doing it, you’ll find that you still keep learning. And that’s what makes it so rewarding.

Customer reviews

A fantastic weekend of sailing, almost 130 NM in all, with a relaxed, but fully engaging skipper. Great set up and brilliant on the admin. Thanks Stef, Tom et al!

I did a weeks coastal skipper course getting ready for my yacht master and I have to say it was one of the best training weeks I’ve had - our training instructor was superb, exactly the sort of person that you want. He could inspire, provide discipline and impart knowledge as well as let you learn through your own mistakes. Tom and Steph run an excellent operation there and I highly recommend it. They’re flexible and very helpful when it comes to your journey into being a qualified sailor.

Designed in conjunction with the Professional Yachting Association (PYA) this course is intended to build upon a candidate's basic powerboating knowledge and skills.

Attendees will gain confidence in their ability to manoeuvre a powerboat more smoothly but the real benefit is the emphasis on learning important skills in pilotage, both day and night, and passenger carriage and management.

The course includes plenty of time to practice working with a crew member and operating short-handed.  In navigation terms, the emphasis is on short ship-to-shore transfers by day and at night.

RYA Powerboat Advanced Professional Qualifications

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level of certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc. If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore. There are two types of Advanced certificate:

a)  A course completion certificate awarded by a training centre on successful completion of a two-day training course

b) A certificate of competence awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam

If you need a Powerboat Advanced certificate in order to work on board a commercial craft subject to the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 3, 4, 5 and 6 waters - that is up to 20 miles from a safe haven. Please note: it is only possible to commercially endorse an RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence (option b above). The only exception to this is if you were awarded a course completion certificate (option a above) prior to 1 January 2005, in which case you may obtain a commercial endorsement without having to pass the exam.

International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC)

Upon successful completion of our Powerboat training course , candidates may submit an application to the RYA to obtain an International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) for the category of “Power up to 10m” – subject to eligibility (see below).

The ICC is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries.

It is issued by the RYA in the United Kingdom to British Nationals and UK Residents (of any nationality), aged 16 or older.

If you are neither a British national nor resident in the UK, check here whether the RYA can issue your ICC

The RYA currently charge a certificate fee of £55 for issue of the ICC (free for RYA members), which is valid for 5 years.

The cost of RYA membership is equivalent to (or in some cases cheaper than) the cost of ICC certification; for non-members, it is worth considering RYA membership at the point of application.

If you require the inland category to be validated on your ICC (this is required for use of inland waterways – rivers, canal systems and lakes in Europe), you will need to complete a CEVNI theory test. For full details, supporting materials/resources, and test bookings, please visit: www.focusmarine.co.uk/cevni

We can conduct own-boat ICC assessments in UK/European waters for the following categories:

  • Power up to 10m
  • Power (unlimited)*

The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It was historically known as the International Certificate of Competence. It’s often required for demonstrating competence when bareboat chartering/renting boats abroad (ie. without a professional skipper/crew).

You can apply for an ICC after completing an RYA Level 2 Powerboat course.

The easiest way to apply for your ICC is to apply online via the RYA website

Lunch isn’t provided, but we do provide refreshments (tea, coffee, biscuits) and we return to the pier each day for a lunch break.

Candidates are welcome to bring a packed lunch, or head out to cafés/shops nearby (within easy walking distance).

Our training venue is located at Chiswick Pier, which is within a private housing estate with on-street parking restrictions in operation at all times (including weekends and bank holidays).

On Pumping Station Road and Corney Road, Hounslow CPZ hours are Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, so anytime outside of these hours you can park on surrounding roads for free.

Pay & Display parking is available at Chiswick House (10 minute walk). There is also limited on-street parking on Riverside Drive during weekdays.

The RYA Level 2 Powerboat course has no pre-requisites, and there’s no need to have undertaken any training prior to attending.

Candidates under 12 years old may attend a Level 1 course, which is aimed at covering the very basics of boat driving for children under supervision.

With the RYA Powerboat Level 2 scheme you can gain an International Certificate of Confidence (“ICC”) that means when you go to certain countries, you may need a license to hire a BOAT up to 10m – that’s where we can help you prepare.

This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). It focuses on low-speed close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed and collision regulations.

This two days course gives plenty of time for both practical instruction and theory. Whilst at first glance the syllabus appears very similar to the level one course, the extra time available makes a real difference to the depth in which subjects are covered and therefore the amount a student can learn.

We are lucky with the beautiful Cyprus weather, so we are making the most of it by teaching a great part of the course on board of the boat.

  • Assumed Knowledge:  None (Level 1 is NOT a requirement)
  • Duration of course:  2 Days (09h00 to 17h00)
  • Ratio : 3 students for 1 Instructor Max (Possibility of private course)
  • Course Content:  Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard
  • Ability after the course:  Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft.

All our courses are held in Latchi; Theory will be held in our classroom at our office in Latchi, and the practice is held along the coast of Latchi. All Courses are delivered in English Language only.

For more info on the courses, please use the “contact us” form or email us at [email protected] with the number of people interested in the course and the dates you wish to do the course.

The RYA Level 2 Powerboat course costs €450 and is scheduled over two days – including a theory and practical examination.

You will learn and enhance your Powerboat manoeuvring skills on a range of boats available in Latchi Harbour from George’s Watersports.

Our RYA Training Courses are conducted throughout the year, and we suggest that you do book well in advance to secure your place.

The RYA offer the Powerboat Level 2 course for anyone 12 years and older, however, our centre took the decision to only offer this course to people over 18 years old.

RYA & STCW Courses – Sail, Power, Super-Yacht & Workboat

Route to RYA Yachtmaster (Power or Sail)

The Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence Exam can be taken in a powered or sail craft (i.e. there are two separate disciplines). Much of the route (the shorebased courses) is identical for both disciplines.

There are actually three levels of Yachtmaster ( Coastal, Offshore and Ocean). When people refer to “Yachtmaster” they are generally referring to Yachtmaster Offshore. This article focuses on Coastal and Offshore, our separate article, “ What is an Ocean Yachtmaster ” deals with the higher level of the three.

Yachtmaster-COC

The route to Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore is similar, candidates for both will have followed a similar pathway, but the offshore candidate will have logged considerably more experience prior to exam and will be pushed harder during the exam. Visit our helpful RYA Advanced and Yachtmaster Qualifying mileage page for more information.

The route to Yachtmaster has several stepping stones, most students work through Day Skipper Shorebased and Day Skipper Practical and then Coastal Skipper , however if you already have relevant experience and skills you can consider skipping these courses.

Before considering embarking on a Yachtmaster practical week , you must arm yourself with;

  • Qualifying mileage (power or sail as appropriate)
  • RYA SRC (1 day) or
  • Higher level GMDSS Radio Certificate of Competence  (3-8 day)
  • RYA First Aid (1 day) or
  • STCW Elementary First Aid (1 day) or
  • STCW Medical First Aid (4 day) or
  • Seafish First Aid
  • RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased (6 days or online)
  • Knowledge level to RYA Radar (1 day)
  • Knowledge level to RYA Diesel (1 day)

You are also strongly advised to take the RYA Sea Survival or STW PST Course (1 day), which is required if you intend to operate as a commercial Yachtmaster (most candidates take the exam for commercial reasons and add the RYA Commercial Endorsement however some are leisure boaters and do it for themselves).

Sea Survival PST

Our Yachtmaster practical (preparation and exam) week is 5 days, it takes place on board our motorboat and results in the Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore (Power) Certificates of Competence . If you prefer to take the sail exam we can put you in touch with a sail school once you have all of the above shorebased courses. During the prep week our Instructor will take you through many of the exercises the examiner is likely to throw at you on the final day. We operate the prep week with a maximum of 3 students.

RYA Powerboat Level 1

This one day course is a very basic introduction to powerboating most people go straight to level 2.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sports boats  that don’t generally undertake long or offshore passages.

The types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats etc.

If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster™ Offshore.

If you need a Powerboat Level 2 certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA’s codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 6 waters – that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours.
