  • An on-site spa, fitness center, and saunas
  • Four outdoor tennis courts, bocce ball, and volleyball

  • Charter boat trips leave from marina
  • Free parking and free Wi-Fi throughout
  • High prices during the summer season
  • The outdoor pool and beach areas can get crowded with kids
  • The location is not walking distance to the ocean or town

Bottom Line

Overlooking Lake Montauk, this family-friendly resort is a classic summer getaway with views of the attached marina, bobbing with boats, and a white lighthouse. Its 107 rooms, suites, and villas are nicely decorated in nautical style, and equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen LED TVs, and mini-fridges. Though the location is not directly on the ocean, Montauk Yacht Club's great food and drink options, many free on-site activities (pools, tennis, volleyball, kayaking), and free shuttle service to town and the beaches make it a draw for an amenities-filled Hamptons getaway. Beach-or-bust travelers could consider Surf Club Resort , which has a stunning beachfront location, but no on-site dining.

Oyster Hotel Review

A family-friendly resort with a variety of activities and restaurants.

The historic Montauk Yacht Club Resort & Marina evokes another time. Originally built in 1928 by entrepreneur Carl Fisher (the man credited with turning Miami from a sleepy backwater town to a thriving resort metropolis), the resort quickly became the local go-to vacation destination for the wealthy (original members of the club include J.P. Morgan, Vincent Astor, and Harold S. Vanderbilt). Charles Lindbergh is said to have often flown his seaplane into the harbor to dock at the club's marina. And according to local legend, the Island Club (which was located next door to the original resort and would eventually become part of the resort as it stands today) was the most popular speakeasy and gambling casino around town during Prohibition. To avoid trouble, the club posted watchmen at the stone stanchions at the end of the island's causeway -- when the police stopped by, the guards would radio the club for management to hide the liquor and gambling equipment.

Today, the resort maintains some of that storied appeal (the towering white lighthouse is what beaconed guests to the resort from its inception). Yet there are plenty of modernized amenities to keep today's guest happy -- though the two outdoor pools and small private beach are popular with kids, so if you’re looking for some celebrity-style peace and quiet, head to the ocean. Despite updates and upgrades, one original trait has remained consistent through the years: The resort, as a whole, attracts a wealthy set, and guests shouldn't be surprised to see the occasional celebrity roaming its grounds.

Minutes from Montauk Harbor, the resort faces a marina, and is a short drive from the ocean and downtown

At the easternmost tip of Long Island, the Montauk Yacht Club’s lakeside location is kitty corner from Montauk Harbor -- an area with restaurants, shops, and plenty of harborside sightseeing. In addition to downtown Montauk (a nine-minute drive from the hotel), there are many nearby towns to explore, and, of course, miles of sandy beaches to enjoy. The drive to East Hampton takes about 25 minutes, and driving to Sag Harbor and Southampton takes about 40 and 55 minutes, respectively.

Pools, tennis courts, and bonfires make this a fun summer resort

Montauk Yacht Club Resort isn't right on the Atlantic, but it offers many on-site amenities to redress the non-oceanfront location. There are two outdoor heated pools, both surrounded by brick patios and overlooking the marina. A small sandy beach with loungers and umbrellas (free; cabanas also available for a fee) overlooks the lake, but both it and the outdoor pools can feel crowded with kids. The oval-shaped indoor pool, also heated, provides a nice alternative; it's set in a skylit space with vintage pinstripe wooden surfboards hanging on the white wood walls.

The full-service Spa MYC offers massages, body treatments, facials, waxing, and nail work, as well as spa packages and the option of in-room service. A fitness center provides all the necessary equipment (free weights, ellipticals, treadmills, machinery), plus cedar saunas, and there are four outdoor tennis courts, with racquets and balls free to use. Paddleboards, cruiser bikes, and kayaks are all free to borrow, and there is a playground for kids. The resort grounds include areas for volleyball, bocce ball, and horseshoes, plus outdoor seating areas and fire pits (the resort holds bonfires with s’mores in the warmer months). Private, semi-private, or group surf lessons and paddleboard sessions or tours can be arranged, and a Kids' Surf Academy is held on the weekdays. Excursions are available from charter boats in the marina. The hotel offers free shuttle service to Montauk Harbor, downtown, and beaches. Parking and resort-wide Wi-Fi are both free.

All-Inclusive / Food

A range of upscale cuisine, specialty cocktails, and casual bar bites make it easy to stay close.

Montauk Yacht Club offers a good mix of dining options that appeal to both families and couples seeking romance. The upscale Coast Kitchen is a New American restaurant focusing on local ingredients (the menu features a daily fresh catch), while the casual The Alley & The Deck has a Florida feel and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. B-Bar is an indoor nautical-style lounge offering specialty cocktails and small bites, and the seasonal Sunset Pier allows for dockside eating, drinking, and watching the sunset.

Built by Carl Fisher in 1929, the Montauk Yacht Club was an exclusive, private club for the likes of the Chryslers, Astors, Vanderbilts, and Fords. Back in the day, Charles Lindbergh used to land his seaplane in Lake Montauk and moor it at the club. Nearly 90 years later, Gurney’s Resorts is adding a second property in Montauk with its acquisition of Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club & Resort–we can expect much of that prewar glamour to return.

What’s in store for the resort? Immediately, better food and beverage service led by LDV Hospitality (which is known especially in the Hamptons for Scarpetta Beach). And as the largest marina in the Hamptons (who knew?) the Yacht Club plans to deliver a full-service experience to the boating community. The property will close this winter for a $13 million upgrade to its 107 guestrooms, ballroom, meeting rooms, three restaurants, and 35-acre marina and grounds, complete in time for the 2019 season. Considering how gorgeous the revamped Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Spa looks now, we’ll be excited to see the new yacht club next year.

President and Owner of Gurney’s Resorts George Filopoulos told Behind the Hedges , “The Montauk Yacht Club is an iconic property in the Hamptons, and its marina location creates a prime spot for boaters and yachters, allowing us to extend the Gurney’s experience to a broader audience. Although the property completed a $4,000,000 refresh over the winter, our further planned upgrades will ensure that the Yacht Club experience is consistent with the Gurney’s brand ethos, including innovative design, service, ambiance and food and beverage.”

While we’re in a Gurney’s groove, the original Gurney’s is debuting a completely new design of its famous Beach Club (gone are the yellow and white stripes!) this summer on its 2,000 ft private beach (see below). Additionally, the summer will welcome fashion and lifestyle pop-ups with The Fashion Collective at Gurney’s, wellness pop-ups and retreats from the hottest names in fitness, and a partnership with infrared sauna Higher Dose.

Restrooms and laundry are provided, and even though there is no fueling station on-site, three are located only 1,000 to 3,000 yards from the docks.

Just minutes from the island's main attractions, the 107-room resort overlooking Lake Montauk offers activities for all ages. You can chill at one of the beautiful sandy white beaches or get adventurous and hike along coastal state parks such as Camp Hero or Hither Hills . However, with three luxurious pools, three restaurants, two bars, a spa and fitness center, picnic areas and a private beach, you may never want to leave.

The sister property, Gurney's Montauk Resort & Marina , is just a few miles across the island with a complimentary shuttle that travels hourly between the two. A major benefit is the upgraded Wi-Fi that has improved coverage and increased bandwidth.

The variety of restaurants provided on-site is sure to satisfy. Showfish is a fine, yet engaging seafood restaurant open for dinner and brunch, The Pool Club is a poolside restaurant to sip, swim and relax, and Il Forno Market features specialty gourmet pizzas and freshly baked goods as well as an array of salads and sandwiches, says George Filopoulos, owner of Gurney's Resorts.

"Montauk boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, great restaurants, outdoor activities such as surfing and paddle boarding, and a lively nightlife scene," he adds. You don't want to miss the new action on the island.

Montauk Yacht Club sale most expensive ever in Hamptons

Hospitality property sales have not been setting many price records since a certain virus spread across the world in 2020, but one did in Montauk.

Safe Harbor Marinas spent $149 million to buy the Montauk Yacht Club from Gurney’s, Behind the Hedges reported . The acquisition was last year, but the price had not been previously revealed.

It’s a record in numerous ways. The highest price for a Hamptons hotel sale had been another deal last year, for the 96-room Marram Montauk . That property traded for barely half as much as the Montauk Yacht Club, which regained its former name after operating as Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina in recent years.

The $149 million was the most lucrative commercial Hamptons sale last year and might have been the most ever paid for a property on the East End. Barry Rosenstein paid $147 million for an East Hampton estate in 2014.

Gurney’s recouped its Montauk Yacht Club investment and then some. It purchased the property in 2018 for $56.7 million and put another $13 million in the property, which had sold in 2007 for $34 million.

The transaction involves more than the 35-acre Montauk Yacht Club. It includes four Star Island Drive lots and three attached piers, along with the motel property at 88 South Elmwood Avenue.

The peninsula that stretches out onto Lake Montauk includes 107 guest rooms and villas, three pools, a pair of restaurants, several bars, tennis and pickleball courts and a private beach. There are also more than 200 boat slips.

Three years ago, real estate investment trust Sun Communities, the largest marina owner in the country, acquired Safe Harbor Marinas. Rising boat sales in the pandemic have led to consolidation in the sector .

George Filopoulos, Gurney's Owner Who Made Big Impression in Montauk, Dies at 54

montauk yacht club gurneys

George Filopoulos in 2018, shortly after the company now called Gurneys Resorts purchased the Montauk Yacht Club for $56 million. The company sold the yacht club last year for $149 million. Filopoulos died on Sunday in Connecticut. MICHAEL WRIGHT

George Filopoulos, with CCOM Chairman David Freudenthal, was the president of Gurneys Resorts and played an outsized role in Montauk's business and charitable communities in the 10 years since buying the former Gurney's Inn. Danielle Friscia

George Filopoulos

montauk yacht club gurneys

Many in the Montauk community were left in shock this week by word of the death of George Filopoulos, the president and face of Gurney’s Resorts — a man with the Midas touch who had become a ubiquitous and integral part of many corners of the local scene in the 10 years since his company bought the former Gurney’s Inn.

He died on August 18 of pancreatic cancer, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, his family said. He was 54.

After buying the former Gurney’s Inn in 2013, Filopoulos had quickly become a driving force in local business and one of Montauk’s largest employers, as he and his business partners spent over $150 million in the ensuing years acquiring and renovating some of the region’s marquee properties.

He also became a soaring figure for local community and environmental groups and charities, throwing his personal energy and substantial financial resources behind a variety of historic, educational and environmental projects.

Paul Monte, whose family had owned Gurney’s Inn since the 1950s, said that Filopoulos’s arrival on the Montauk scene, when he purchased the property in 2013, made an instant impression.

“He was one of the most astute businessmen I’ve ever met,” Monte said this week, recalling the complicated negotiations for the purchase of the property from the family who owned it and the dozens of time-share owners who had financial stakes. “He had a head for numbers and a talent for coming up with ideas about how to make things work that others had not been able to.

“And George understood the importance of Gurney’s to the community,” he added. “Beyond his own desire to be active in the community, he saw the role of it as a business, as an employer and as community support, and how important that was, and he didn’t hesitate to jump into all of the roles. He understood the responsibility that came with it.”

Monte said that Filopoulos’s aggressive growth of his holdings and the foresight with which he saw their potential for improvement put him in rare company. “He was such a driving force in the attention that Montauk has gotten over the last 10 years, I would almost put him in the category of previous Montauk visionaries like Carl Fisher and my uncle, Nick Monte.”

Filopoulos’s company, Metrovest Equities, purchased Gurney’s for $25 million. The company invested another $54 million in renovations that quickly made the new Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa a destination for wealthy summer visitors, shelling out upward of $1,000 per night for hotel rooms and thousands more to reserve day beds at The Beach Club, the resort’s sandy social scene.

In 2015, the company, and partner BLDG Management, bought the neighboring Panoramic View development from the federal government, which had seized it, for $70 million, and transformed the property into multimillion-dollar condominiums, now known as The Residences at Gurney’s Montauk.

In 2018, the newly branded Gurney’s Resorts bought the Montauk Yacht Club for $56.7 million and undertook a $13 million renovation. They sold it last year for $149 million.

Gurney’s Resorts also bought and renovated an island hotel in Newport Harbor in 2016 for $92 million and sold it in 2022 for $174 million. In 2021, the company bough the Camelback Mountain Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, now Sanctuary Camelback Mountain.

When Suffolk County proposed raising the tourism tax — which focuses largely on hotel room tariffs, Filopoulos represented the Montauk hotel community in appealing to the county legislators, not to oppose the tax but to plead that the money be invested in the infrastructure needed to allow the county’s most concentrated collection of hotel rooms, and the tax’s largest revenue generator, to operate.

As much as he invested in his burgeoning business ventures, Filopoulos invested time and money in the Montauk community. His donations flowed to a broad variety of community groups and projects. When the Montauk Historical Society wanted to create the Oceans Institute virtual aquarium at the Montauk Lighthouse Museum, a pitch hoping for a fraction of the cost turned into a donation of the entire $130,000 needed for the popular educational tool.

“He didn’t want his name on anything — he always shied away from public recognition,” the Historical Society’s director, Mia Certic, said. “He was funny and down to earth, and there was not an ounce of vanity in anything he did. He gave to the lighthouse tower restoration, very generously, and I never got to properly thank him. It is such a tragic loss.”

He joined the board of the Concerned Citizens of Montauk and was a full-throated supporter of the group’s environmental and community missions.

“He only ever thought about how he could be doing his best for Montauk — for its environment, for the community and for the residents,” said David Freudenthal, the chairman of the CCOM board, which Filopoulos served on for five years. “He was so modest and self-effacing, and he really believed in the things we were trying to do to push to improve water quality and coastal resiliency. And he, in his own quiet way, helped us do that better.”

Freudenthal recalled that Filopoulos would carry a trash bag with him when he went for jogs in the morning, picking up litter off the road as he went.

“It was a real honor to have been able to work with him, and to know him,” Freudenthal said. “It’s an incredible loss, for his family and for Montauk. There were so many people impacted by the good that he did.”

Gurney’s Resorts and the Filopoulos family announced his death on Wednesday.

“George leaves behind a professional legacy that will forever shape the real estate industry and inspire generations to come,” a statement on behalf of the family from Michael Nenner, the company’s executive vice president, said. “As we reflect on George’s life, we remember his innovative spirit, his dedication to excellence, and his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact. He leaves behind a thriving company that will continue to grow as a testament to his enduring legacy. While he may have left this world physically, his influence will forever be woven into the fabric of Metrovest Equities Inc., Gurney’s Resorts and the communities it touches.”

“George’s business acumen was matched only by his genuine compassion for others,” Nenner added. “He believed in the power of collaboration and was known for fostering meaningful relationships with partners, employees, and stakeholders. His approachable demeanor and willingness to listen earned him not only professional success but also lasting friendships that enriched his life.”

Filopoulos is survived by his wife and two children. The family has asked that donations be made in his memory to Project Purple, a pancreatic cancer research fund, at projectpurple.org. A private family funeral was held on Tuesday.

“It’s a real shame — he was taken way too soon,” Monte said. “He will leave a real void here, in Montauk, and in the business community all over the world.”
