History of Royal Huisman Yachts

Royal Huisman, a reputable Dutch superyacht builder, originated in the marine-rich region of Vollenhove, Holland in 1884. Shipwright Wolter Huisman commenced his career in establishing a small shipbuilding yard, tasked with manufacturing and repairing wooden fishing boats. With the advancement of technologies and shifts in market demands in the 20th century, Royal Huisman gradually pivoted towards building leisure crafts and yachts, thereby marking their place in the high-end sailing and motor-yacht industry. Notably, the company earned its 'Royal' prefix in 1984, as a mark of its centenary and remarkable contribution to the Dutch yachting industry.

In the early years, the initial projects of Royal Huisman revolved around custom sailing and motor yachts; fame truly reached them when they delivered the 47-foot sailing yacht, 'Flyer', which subsequently triumphed in the 1977-1978 Whitbread Round the World Race. Today, their portfolio spans an impressive range of aluminium and carbon composite superyachts, demonstrating their unrivalled expertise in blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technologies. It was under Wolter Huisman's son's (also named Wolter Huisman) guidance that the company rose to prominence, particularly amongst a clientele demanding uniqueness and top-end sailing performance.

Following the family tradition, Wolter Jr.'s daughter Alice Huisman continues to hold the helm of Royal Huisman, preserving the brand's heritage while steering it towards a promising future. Royal Huisman Yachts for Sale

Royal Huisman epitomizes Dutch maritime craftsmanship with their custom luxury sailing and motor yachts. The shipyard was founded in 1884 by Jan Huisman and is still family-owned and operated. Early on, the yard built small wooden sailing and motor yachts, but in 1954 Royal Huisman switched its focus to steel, and aluminum yachts. With a focus on successful racing sailing yacht production and the custom superyacht market, Royal Huisman found a winning formula. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed, Royal Huisman. At this point, the yard was already established in the international racing circuit, building several honor-winning performance yachts such as SAUDADE, FLYER, and FLYER II. The yard builds and refits custom luxury sailing yachts and motor yachts at its shipyard in Vollenhove, Netherlands. Here they have Huisfit, which is the shipyard’s in-house refit and repair division that not only refits Huisman builds but also does builds such as Heesen, Lürssen, and Claasen.

NOTABLE ROYAL HUISMAN BUILDS

The largest Royal Huisman to date is the 266’ sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II. She is the world’s largest aluminum sailing yacht and is currently in the top 10 ranking of the world’s largest sailing yachts. Another notable build is the 260’ sailing yacht ATHENA, which was built in 2004. This triple-masted schooner was built by Jim Clarke, who at the time had a 155’ Huisman being built and decided that he wanted a larger Huisman as well. ATHENA can accommodate 12 guests and has many amenities that other sailing yachts did not at the time. This was a massive feat for the Royal Huisman and established the yard as a megayacht builder.

ROYAL HUISMAN TODAY

Today, Royal Huisman is working on Project 410, a massive 280’ megayacht that will be the world’s largest sloop, and Royal Huisman’s largest build. She will include a massive carbon mast, and a boom and integrated sailing system, which will be designed and produced by Royal Huisman’s sister company, Rondal. Project 410 will be a true sailor’s yacht, which will be ready to sail quickly and capable of sailing fast, in comfort, to make the most of that long waterline. She will be exciting to sail, even in light airs, with an impressive ability to build and increase apparent wind speed.  All in all, Project 410 will be a megayacht equipped to explore the world in a grand fashion. The project is also an eco-friendly one, with recyclability and green energy top of mind when building this yacht.

Another major focus is the Huisfit division, which is a dedicated division for refit, rebuild, and renewal. Huisfit offers an extensive range of benefits and services to all superyachts builds in the global fleet, which includes everything from classification-driven refit and maintenance work to the re-arrangement and refurbishment of interiors. With a dedication to their clients, services like Huisfit and the 24/7 service department can provide the service needed to make the user experience enjoyable in every phase of the yacht’s lifespan.

Finally, the builder has been investing substantially in research and development, creating Featherlight, which is their trademarked mix of aluminum and carbon composite. This will make the yard a formidable competition to existing carbon composite superyachts during regattas. Featherlight combines performance and comfort with no compromises. This type of innovation is in Royal Huisman’s DNA, as the yard strives to make their yachts as efficient as possible, whether it’s during a regatta, or exploring the seven seas.

History of Royal Huisman

In 1884, Jan Jans Huisman founded the Huisman Shipyard, which continues to be family-owned and operated to this day. In the early years, luxury yacht builder Huisman produced smaller wooden motor and sailing yachts. The shipyard began building in steel in 1954, and also pioneered aluminium yacht construction. In 1959, Jan Huisman’s son Wolter Huisman took over as the head of luxury yacht builder Huisman, steering the shipyard into successful racing sailing yacht production and eventually entering the custom superyacht market. In 1975, Huisman launched sailing yacht mast and rigging division, Rondal. Upon the shipyard’s 100th anniversary in 1984, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave luxury yacht builder Huisman the title “Royal”, and the firm was renamed Royal Huisman. In 2004, Wolter Huisman retired and his daughter, Alice, became managing director of superyacht builder Royal Huisman.

Notable Royal Huisman Yachts

Among the many celebrated superyachts launched by luxury yacht builder Royal Huisman are the reconstructed J-Class Sailing Yacht Endeavour , delivered in 1989 to former owner Elizabeth Meyer. The 47.42-metre Sailing Yacht Hyperion , delivered in 1996 to American entrepreneur Jim Clark, founder of Netscape, featured a record-setting 59-metre carbon-fibre mast and advanced computer system. In the early 2000s Clark returned to superyacht builder Royal Huisman to commission the 90-meter schooner Athena . The 58.04-metre Sailing Yacht Ethereal , launched by Royal Huisman in 2009, set the standard for environmentally conscious superyacht construction.

“We wanted to create something that is truly electrifying, with boats that excite and inspire, but also protect the environments we explore,” Jarkko Jämsén, Axopar’s head designer, said in a statement . “AX/E reflects Axopar’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the water.”

The two newcomers, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival this week, both feature advanced electric propulsion systems by Norwegian e-motor manufacturer EVOY. The duo is also equipped with the robust deep-V hulls synonymous with Axopar.

The 22-foot AX/E 22 is powered by a 63 kW battery and an Evoy Outboard Breeze motor that can produce over 120 hp for a top speed of 36 knots and a range of more than 50 nautical miles at slow speeds. The larger, 25-foot AX/E 25 packs a 126 kWh battery and a more powerful Evoy Outboard Storm motor capable of churning out over 300 horses for a max speed of over 50 knots and a range of up to 60 nautical miles at slow speeds. Axopar adds that each boat also offers “unparalleled torque, whisper-quiet operation, and zero emissions.” Fast charging tech ensures minimal downtime between adventures, too.

The AX/E fleet isn’t bad to look at, either. The first two models showcase premium eco-friendly materials, powder-painted profiles, stylish upholstery, and neutral palettes, resulting in a refined, timeless aesthetic that is sure to appeal to discerning yachters. Each boat also has modular features that enable personalized configurations. Both can accommodate six passengers, but the 25 also has a front cabin that can sleep two guests. Want to check them out in person? The AX/E 22 and AX/E 25 will be displayed at Cannes from September 10 to 15. The 25 has a recommended retail price of €234,000 (about $259,000), while the 22 has a recommended retail price of €133,500 (roughly $147,000).
