Bravada Launches Head-Turning Houseboat on Lake Powell

' src=

If you don’t want to cruise outside the United States because of the pandemic, you might want to think about Lake Powell, on the border of Arizona and Utah, where you could enjoy all the amenities of home, plus some, offered by the new 75-foot Bravada Yachts luxury houseboat.

Whether you’re on the Bravada or some other boat, at Lake Powell you won’t feel lonely. About two million people a year (in non-pandemic years) visit the lake. Basically a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River, and part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the lake is about 200 miles long and has 1,960 miles of shoreline, with some 80 side canyons. It’s home to rental houseboats, marinas, campgrounds and some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

The new Bravada, named Invictus , was launched there in December, and it’s been turning heads ever since. It’s part of Bravada’s Atlas V-Series, and it has two-plus decks, 3,200 square feet of space, five cabins plus two cuddy cabins, two heads, two galleys, seven flat-screen TVs, a Bose sound system, Quartz countertops, a fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, water filtration system, central AC and heating and four PWC ramps with electric winches.

On the upper deck you can keep warm during the evenings sitting around the fire pit, or take a plunge into Lake Powell (it’s 3,700 feet deep) from the 15-foot waterslide. Or you could just relax on the sun deck with daybeds.

The single helm station has back-up cameras, so the captain can check his surroundings. If you’re worried about handling a 75-foot boat with a 22-foot beam, Bravada will send someone to teach you how to drive and anchor. The Bravada plant is not far away in Tolleson, just outside Phoenix. The boat is powered by twin Volvo sterndrives.

Aaron Browning, the Bravada CEO, says it took two years to plan and build Invictus . It certainly doesn’t look like most other lake boats. “We’re excited to see just how far we can push the envelope in the houseboat industry,” he says.

A Bravada Atlas V-Series boat costs about $2 million. If you don’t want to buy the entire boat, you also can purchase fractional shares. Read more:

Bravada Yachts Launches “Invictus” ~ Inspired by the Ocean, Built for the Lake

bravada yachts news

Bravada Yachts is pleased to announce the launch of their newest and most aggressively designed luxury houseboat to date. This 80-foot custom-built wide-bodied lake yacht named “Invictus” debuted at Lake Powell on December 1 and it’s taking the houseboat industry by storm.

The two-and-a-half level, 3,200-square-foot, luxury watercraft valued at about $2 million boasts five staterooms, two bathrooms, two kitchens, seven televisions, custom outdoor furniture, a fire pit, and a waterslide.

Constructed without using wood, drywall, or standard houseboat systems, Bravada has chosen innovative alternatives, optimized for your family’s safety.  These include Class A1 Fire-rated raw materials, with superior water/mold/mildew resistance, unmatched soundproofing, and increased energy efficiency.

Every other houseboat manufacturer in the country uses two-by-fours for framing. They use plywood for the floors and subfloors, and drywall for the walls. The problem is that if water gets in, and it always does, the wood can rot or warp and send issues throughout the entire boat. We replaced the wooden two-by-four walls and the plywood floors with lightweight structural steel for the framing, and it’s actually substantially lighter than the wood. So, you get a lighter but more structural boat. In some cases, up to three times as strong as the structure of a typical houseboat. And that allows us to put oversized windows, taller ceilings, and the rooms are nearly soundproof. – Aaron Browning, CEO of Bravada Yachts

The artistry and development process from concept to completion took under two years with modern interiors and bespoke exteriors all designed and built by Bravada Yacht’s elite research and development team. Bravada Yachts has set a new standard in the industry with Invictus, introducing fresh ideas from the first weld to the final touch.

Bravada Yachts is the only luxury houseboat brand with a team consisting of world-class fabricators, master engineers from various disciplines, designers from the ocean yacht world and top-notch industry experts leveling up the game including President Robert Gutierrez, CEO Aaron Browning and Vice President of Operations, Mia Gutierrez.

The team’s combined expertise has allowed for the creation of a completely revolutionized lake yachting experience.

The houseboat industry has been stagnant for decades, the new V-Series represents the first glimpse into the future of houseboating and the direction that we are laser-focused on leading the industry towards. There is a reason houseboats are not built with curves because it’s very labor-intensive, with 1000s and 1000s labor hours to achieve that look. And so that’s what discourages companies from it because if you look at most houseboats, they’ll buy a prefab paneling product and just glue it and screw it to the boat. We embrace the challenges, and we’re excited to see just how far we can push the envelope in the houseboat industry. – Aaron Browning, CEO of Bravada Yachts

Designed by award-winning watercraft alchemist, J. David Weiss, the new Atlas V-Series takes center stage with its sleek lines and high-end features that infuse the ocean yacht world into the lake yachting experience.

The new Atlas V-Series, constructed from structural steel, prides itself on a precise juxtaposition of functionality and stylish aesthetic appeal with two-and-a-half levels and the coveted “reverse layout,” where the stern end of the boat completely opens up with a massive sliding glass door.

Combining luxury with comfort, Invictus has key features including massive “aquarium” style windows, as well as custom sliding and helm doors by Western Windows Systems, which provide unmatched views and a distinctive look.

The main deck is complete with a salon accommodated with a top-of-the-line audiovisual system, designer steam fireplace, and satellite television. Sleeping up to 14 guests, the luxury lake yacht offers five staterooms, two lower cuddy cabins, and two bathrooms with custom tiled showers, LED mirrors, and marbled quartz countertops.

The completely stocked full-sized kitchen comes equipped with quartz countertops and stainless steel Samsung appliances. The carefully-designed helm offers a comfortable captain’s chair and multiple camera displays to assist overall visibility.

The upper deck features amenities such as an outdoor kitchen, featuring stainless steel cabinets, designer backsplash, and grill by RH Peterson, surrounded by custom Dekton countertops, a unique synthetic stone that beautifully defies the elements, a crushed glass-lined fire pit with custom modern daybed seating made with powder-coated steel framing and custom Sunbrella upholstery, and a 15-foot rear waterslide to cool off in a hurry.

Invictus maximizes fuel efficiency with the power and torque needed to maneuver this massive 70-ton vessel. It is one of the only houseboats on the market to use Volvo Diesel engines with the Volvo Penta Outdrives and Bow Thruster. Owners will enjoy an increased top speed, a smooth ride, and near-silent cruising.

Boating and anchoring lessons are just one of the many perks new Bravada owners will enjoy.

We will teach any of the owners personally. So, for example, the boat we just launched has 11 partners. We will release a series of videos that show them how to anchor and drive the vessel. In addition to that, if they want an in-person lesson, we’ll travel up to the lake and teach the owners directly. – Aaron Browning, CEO of Bravada Yachts

Every Bravada Yacht is proudly built in the USA at the Bravada Yachts factory in Tolleson, Arizona. Atlas V-Series models are currently available for single owner or fractional owner purchases.

Material comes into our factory as just raw sheets of metal. We develop, manufacture, and fabricate everything here in Arizona, proudly made in the USA. However, the most significant factor that separates Bravada from competitors is our sense of teamwork. We have a fantastic team across the entire company, and that’s how we launched this new concept in only two years. – Aaron Browning, CEO of Bravada Yachts

Business Buzz: Bravada Yachts Transforms the Houseboat Industry

The car crossover is evident in Bravada’s demographics. “There’s an analogous appeal,” Weiss says. “These clients have very refined tastes in all these other arenas – in their homes, in their cars, in their private airplanes.” To wit: Bravada had an installation at Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction a couple of years ago and ended up selling a few boats.

Currently, the company’s primary markets are in Arizona and Utah, but it’s in talks to build a facility extension on the East Coast. “Now that we have a clear vision for where the product line will go, what our offerings will be and how we will execute those, the next move is to… expand who we’re offering them to,” Weiss says. He’d also like to add a little more color to his design palette. “You have these incredible natural wonders like Lake Powell and… colors of the sunsets and the rocks and the water, and then you just have so many white boats,” he says. “The point is the lake, not the boat, but I think there could be more harmony there.”

Bravada Yachts: Redefining Houseboating as a Luxury Yachting Experience

Bravada Yachts is an Arizona-based luxury lake yacht and houseboat company that is setting the optimal standard and pushing the boundaries in the industry. Bravada crafts fully-furnished lake yachts resembling high-end luxury homes with the amenities of a five star resort.

Current yacht models include: V-Series - Up to 7 beds, 3 baths (Starting at $499,000), GT-Series - Up to 9 beds, 4 baths (Starting at $1,099,000), X-Series - Up to 16 beds, 6 baths (price upon request).

Bravada creates custom dream yachting experiences with an unsurpassed eye for the details. Just a few of Bravada’s full-customization capabilities include: dual luxury kitchens, optimized floor plans, premium finishes, stainless steel appliances, Jacuzzis that can fit up to 16 people, flat-screen movie theater, fire-pits and endless water toys.

Bravada yacht bar

Bravada’s fractional ownership program allows buyers to divide the costs of owning a luxury houseboat with a small group of co-owners, very similar to the private jet model. Owners receive their “guaranteed week” each year, in addition to using the boat whenever it’s free.

Debuting in summer 2019, Bravada Yachts will offer an exclusive ownership opportunity of the first Bravada X-Boat Mega-Yacht , which boasts: 4.5 levels, 7,500 sq. feet of living space and a helicopter pad to name just a few features. Partners will share ownership of the first ever Bravada X-Boat Mega-Yacht with like-minded individuals and participate in bi-annual retreats with celebrities, pro-athletes and business superstars like Robert Kiyosaki and Daymond John.

Bravada is revolutionizing the yacht-houseboat hybrid with advancements in tech and safety such as ease of steering with highly-tuned bow stern thrusters that centrally direct the boat (as opposed to traditional rear-driven boats) and also offers driving lessons so anyone can try their hand at playing “captain.”

New Partnership with Bravada Yachts Marks Milestones for Volvo Penta

New Partnership with Bravada Yachts Marks Milestones for Volvo Penta

Invictus  marks several important “firsts” for Volvo Penta. The impressive luxury houseboat is the first Bravada houseboat to be powered by Volvo Penta and largest boat in the region to be powered by a Volvo Penta  Aquamatic sterndrive .

“Team Bravada wanted a propulsion system that would continue the Bravada legacy of changing the houseboat industry and we found it in Volvo Penta. We were impressed by the throttle response, rapid acceleration and maneuverability with integrated electric steering,” said Robert Gutierrez, Principal at Bravada Yachts. “In addition, we found the Volvo Penta propulsion package very easy to install and service.”

The DPI sterndrive enables silent and smooth shifting and boasts high engine torque for easier maneuvering. The Volvo Penta system also offers longer service intervals, fewer service items and propeller seals designed for longer life, as well as industry-leading fuel efficiency and low CO 2  emissions. The fully integrated EVC network provides improved diagnostics and monitoring of system health.

Martin Bjuve, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas, commented, “The team at Bravada does not shy away from venturing toward uncharted territory, and this is a mindset we fully embrace at Volvo Penta. We see strong synergies between our organizations and are confident our solutions will serve as a cornerstone in Bravada’s efforts to define the future of the houseboat industry.”

The installation and system integration of the propulsion package was overseen by  Helmut’s Marine Service , Volvo Penta’s Power Center servicing Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Guam.

“This collaboration with Bravada demonstrates just how versatile the propulsion package from Volvo Penta really is,” said Nadine Urciuoli, vice president of Helmut’s Marine Service. “The power, performance and fuel efficiency of the system makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.”

“Invictus , with massive aquarium-style floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors, features a host of luxury amenities for lake cruising and entertaining in style,” said Aaron Browning, Principal at Bravada Yachts. “The boat has five staterooms, two baths and two cuddy cabins. There are a fire pit and waterslide on the top deck, stainless-steel appliances and quartz countertops in the kitchen, 10 flat-screen satellite TVs, surround sound and other custom features for the most discriminating owners.”

BRAVADA IS BACK!

Arizona-based Bravada Yachts is back and stronger than ever! With new owners and a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, the iconic yacht builders are making waves again in the industry with their innovative designs and bold vision to serve the boating community with quality, performance and attainable luxury.

In fact, the response from buyers has been so overwhelming, the new owners are already on track to have their best ever year for sales.

According to loyal client, Sara Ball Merrill, "My family and friends have been avid Lake Powell and houseboating enthusiasts for years, we’ve considered owning a new boat, but it wasn't until we were introduced to Aaron and Andrew at Bravada Yachts that we felt it was time to invest in a new boat for our business and our family. These guys went above and beyond for us. Our daughter was recently diagnosed with a terrible illness and when Aaron and Andrew found out they invited our family and our daughter’s friends to come out on the lake on one of their boats. We now feel like family. We are so happy with the sleek new designs and custom interiors they’re doing and were excited to be on our new 75 ft. Bravada GT next summer!”

Aaron Browning, the company’s new CEO, has been a Bravada Yacht owner and lake enthusiast for years. “Our motto is ‘Be Bold.’ Our vision is to create lake experiences that exceed the expectations and desires of every family member. We’re boaters at heart and want to serve and elevate the boating community with next level experiences, bold new designs and attainable luxury.”

Bravada Yachts was acquired in June 2017 and recently moved into a brand new state-of-the-art facility in Tolleson , Arizona . With 30 employees, the company plans to expand to 75 employees by next summer. “We are seeing rapid growth,” says Vice President, Andrew Marshall, “There’s really nothing quite like this product. We are upgrading the traditional country-club mentality and evolving it onto the lake. While the Bravada Yachts community is large and has incredibly interesting boat owners, we feel the best memories are the magical connections shared with friends and loved ones out on the water in paradise. It’s incredible to serve our customers with this type of opportunity."

One way Bravada Yachts offers attainable luxury is by offering factory direct shares on a “multi-owner boat”. They’ll even find your boat partners for you. By splitting the overall costs between a small handful of owners, this offsets the cost and lessens the barrier of entry to owning a custom Lake Yacht . What a great way to have a high end luxury experience for less than cost of a cheap condo. “Heading down to Lake Powell a couple weeks a year with the entire family is a dream vacation in itself,” said Browning. “But to have these vacations every summer while spending less renting a houseboat makes it a smart play as well. This is why we talk so much about attainable luxury. There is nothing quite like it”.

COO, Robert Gutierrez has big plans for moving Bravada Yachts forward from a manufacturing standpoint. "We have a leadership policy to drive innovation and empower our staff. We love showing up to work and seeing so many smiling faces. Just call our number and chat with our office manager, Cindy, she will be sure to express our wonderful new energy. We intend to consistently drive the market by delivering a superior product with cutting-edge technology and luxury features,” he said. “Simple innovations will make the houseboating experience more enjoyable and more convenient.”

Manufacturing has already begun on new orders so expect to see new Bravada Yachts at a lake near you.

Contact Bravada Yachts for more information on “shared-owner” boats, new models, amenities or pricing.

The Hollywood star gave the Pardo GT75 the requisite plugs about “elegance” but missed the big picture. This new vessel is an innovative bridge between a dayboat and weekend cruiser.

Kevin Costner aboard the Pardo GT75.

The GT75 enjoyed pre-show publicity courtesy of actor Kevin Costner, who used the 75-footer to cruise last summer through Calabria, Sicily, and the Aeolian islands. Costner gave the vessel a PR sound bite, noting its “elegance, 360-degree views and many comfortable spaces for sun and relaxing just a step from the sea.” But his onboard video is much more detailed in his assessment of the boat.

But the Hollywood star missed the big picture—specifically, how this vessel stands in a class of its own by successfully combining serious dayboat exterior space with an interior designed for weekend cruising.

Pardo GT75 Stern.

The dayboat component is apparent across the upper deck, with not one, but two forward sets of seats—a dining arrangement with a table in the center of two sets of seats, and a separate lounge forward of those.

But the real differentiator is the aft beach club zone, which includes a generous swim platform (with a foldout ladder that has a mini-platform, a queen-size lounge that looks back over the platform, and fold-down terraces on each side that have become standard features on this style of boat.

Pardo GT75 flagship salon

The interior by Nauta Design features lots of windows on the superstructure of the salon, as well as a massive roof window, with lounges set along the bulkheads. The overall is sense is open space and light, which compensates for the unusual amount of exterior space. The salon also includes a galley area, with side doors on both sides, to increase the sense of space.

Pardo GT75 Main Suite

The GT75 also has generous space belowdecks, with the standard layout of three staterooms and three heads, along with options of two or four cabins (with a nicely concealed crew cabin). The full-beam primary mimics the light and space in the salon, with a sense of roominess and large windows on either side of the queen-size bed. The glassed-in shower, separate from the toilet and sink, is another feature that helps the boat stand out in a busy 75-foot-plus space.

Of course, the vessel’s smart design, which includes the open space up top and generous below-deck arrangement, is what really sets it apart. Then there is its impressive top speed. The standard engine package, triple Volvo 1050s mated to IPS drives, give the 75-footer a top speed of 41.5 mph. Volvo IPS 1350s upgrades lift the top end by another 3 mph.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

More details emerge about Vladimir Putin’s secret sons with Russian gymnast Alina Kabaeva

A newly released investigative report has brought to light new details surrounding the lives of Ivan Putin and Vladimir Putin Jr., the alleged sons of the Russian President and Alina Kabaeva, a renowned gymnast and rumoured longtime love interest.

Putin, 71, had two daughters from his first marriage to Lyudmila Putina before they divorced in 2013.

The Kremlin has denied any relationship between Putin and Kabaeva, 41, for years. However, media speculation linking the two romantically has persisted for more than a decade.

The investigation, first published by the Dossier Center before being recirculated by The Moscow Times , claims that Putin and Kabaeva began their relationship as early as 2008, roughly four years after she claimed gold at the Athens Olympics.

The report claims to offer a rare glimpse into Putin’s personal life, which has remained a mystery for years.

In 2015, the couple allegedly welcomed their first son, Ivan, at the Sant’Anna maternity clinic in Lugano, Switzerland. Four years later, in 2019, their second son, Vladimir Putin Jr, was reportedly born in Moscow.

The report cites sources close to the president, stating that the Russian president himself made the decisions about where each child’s birth would take place.

“When he was born, Vladimir Putin was so happy that he shouted: ‘Hurray! Finally! A boy!’” one of the sources published in Russian media claims.

The two boys are said to live secluded lives in their father’s mansion located in Valdai National Park, a vast and remote estate northwest of Moscow.

According to the Dossier Center, their lives are filled with the presence of nannies, governesses, and sports coaches.

The report claims that Ivan and Vladimir Jr. rarely interact with children their own age, spending most of their time alone or with adults appointed by Putin to oversee their development.

The investigation details how the children only see their parents late at night and only meet their peers during large celebratory gatherings.

Their lives, while opulent, appear remarkably insulated from the outside world, according to the report.

The family reportedly spends a lot of their time at Putin’s residence near Sochi. During the summer, they embark on long yacht trips within the “safe waters” of Russia.

Putin’s residences in Crimea are also regular holiday spots for the family.

Ivan and Vladimir Jr. are reportedly taught by governesses and teachers recruited from the website English Nanny.

In 2015, the couple allegedly welcomed their first son Ivan at the Sant’Anna maternity clinic in Lugano, Switzerland. Four years later, in 2019, their second son, Vladimir Putin Jr, was reportedly born in Moscow.

One recent job posting for an English teacher promised a generous salary of €7,700 (A$12,500 per month), with paid accommodation and a five-day workweek.

However, the job came with strict conditions. Leaving the family’s residence is strictly prohibited, and candidates must pass numerous medical exams before getting the nod.

Aside from English lessons, the boys also reportedly receive music classes and German language instruction from a Bosnian teacher, Sofija Božić, who has worked with the family since 2017.

The investigation noted that teachers and coaches rarely interact with the family directly and instead make contact through numerous assistants.

Both boys are said to have an extensive Lego collection and use several iPads for games and online lessons.

Vladimir Putin is said to have bought his girlfriend, Alina Kabaeva, the ‘biggest apartment in Russia’.

Russian leader’s ‘official’ children

Putin has two officially acknowledged children – Maria, 37, and Katerina, 35, both from first wife Lyudmila Ocheretnaya.

Dr Maria Vorontsova, a year younger than Kabaeva, was born when the Russian president was a KGB spy in Germany.

She is an expert in rare genetic diseases in children and works as a lead researcher at the National Medical Research Centre for Endocrinology of the Ministry of Health of Russia.

Meanwhile Katerina is deputy director of the Institute for Mathematical Research of Complex Systems at Moscow State University.

She is a former high-kicking ‘rock’n’roll’ dancer.

Both daughters have been sanctioned by the West – unlike Kabaeva, and Mr Putin’s unacknowledged “love child” Luiza Rozova, 19.

Luiza is the daughter of cleaner-turned-multi-millionaire Svetlana Krivonogikh, 45, now part-owner of a major Russian bank, one of the country’s wealthiest women with an estimated $130 million financial and property fortune.

Many Russians saw Kabaeva as the reason for the break-up of Putin’s marriage to former air stewardess Lyudmila, 63, in 2014.

Mr Putin previously said: “I have a private life in which I do not permit interference. It must be respected.”

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko previously hinted that Putin’s divorce had come about because Kabaeva had “put pressure on the President”.

Meanwhile, Kabaeva is on record as saying she had met a man who “I love very much”, gushing: “Sometimes you feel so happy that you even feel scared.”

Kabaeva has kept a low profile throughout the Ukraine war – but her media company has been vocal in cheerleading for the Russian President.

The deaths of three children found alongside their father’s at their family home are being investigated as murder.

A woman whose husband enlisted dozens of strangers to rape her while she was drugged has given heartbreaking testimony at trial.

Harrowing details have been revealed about the final moments of the Bayesian superyacht victims and the troubling way they perished.

Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko berths superyacht in UAE

Simeon Kerr in Ras al-Khaimah

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Investigators around the world have been searching for sanctions-hit Russian oligarchs’ yachts. One has been hiding in plain sight.

Italian authorities in March impounded Russian coal and fertilisers magnate Andrey Melnichenko’s $600mn Sailing Yacht A after Russia invaded Ukraine. Another yacht, the $300mn Philippe Starck-designed Motor Yacht A, has been anchored for weeks in the port of Ras al-Khaimah, in the United Arab Emirates.

By placing his yacht in the UAE, Melnichenko has put it beyond the reach of western governments enforcing sanctions on those deemed supportive of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Its presence is a symbolic reminder of the Gulf monarchy’s ambivalence towards western sanctions on Russia, allies of Putin and the wealthy businessmen who have often benefited from ties to the state.

While the UAE government is trying to enhance measures against money laundering to exit a global dirty-money watchdog’s watchlist, the economic foundation of cities such as Dubai has long been based on welcoming flows of assets and people.

“Given its non-enforcement of western sanctions, the dilemma for the UAE is how to sustain its place as an open destination for capital while also appearing to be a good global citizen,” said one compliance professional. “It’s a tricky balancing act.”

The government of the Isle of Man said it had in March deregistered Melnichenko’s yachts, including Motor Yacht A, because of western sanctions, saying, “we will continue to act with appropriate robustness should the situation warrant it”.

Marine locator services placed Motor Yacht A off the Maldives in March. The Financial Times then saw the yacht on April 18. On Saturday it remained moored opposite Ras al-Khaimah’s city-centre fish market.

Businessmen in the UAE say Melnichenko, who denies affiliations to the Kremlin, held meetings there in April, but the tycoon has since returned to Moscow. A representative of Melnichenko, who has been placed under sanctions by the EU and UK as well as Switzerland and Australia, referred questions on the yacht to a lawyer who declined to comment.

UAE authorities in Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah and Abu Dhabi declined to comment.

European officials say they have raised concerns with Emirati counterparts that the UAE could become a financial haven for Russians placed under western sanctions. “We don’t want our allies to become facilitators for the Putin regime,” said one.

Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko attends an event

The UAE government has said it is maintaining a neutral course through the war, calling for an end to hostilities and providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Abu Dhabi, which has developed closer ties with Moscow in recent years, has also assured its allies that sanctions-hit entities will not be able to operate in the UAE. The Gulf monarchy, which has long argued that it is not compelled to enforce other nations’ sanctions, is keen to maintain its historical role as an apolitical territory focused on business.

Thousands of wealthy, non-sanctions-hit Russians have relocated to the UAE to escape economic uncertainty and political instability at home, even though they sometimes struggle to access the financial system. “Big banks are more cautious but smaller banks are offering help to those wishing to relocate. It’s just taking a lot of time,” said a Russian businessman.

Very wealthy Russians generally find financial institutions accommodating. Most of the wealthy elite have second passports from countries that sell nationality, such as Malta or Portugal, which facilitates the opening of new accounts with lenders that are warier of Russian passport holders.

Others have turned to alternative routes, such as cryptocurrencies and hawala, or informal money exchange services. The cost of this service has risen from 1 per cent of the transaction value to 5 per cent since the war broke out as demand surges, said one person aware of the trades.

Many in the UAE see a hypocrisy in western concern over the presence of the yacht and the Russians building new lives there. “So it was OK for London to take all the oligarch money but not for Dubai?” asked one lawyer.
