The Sun represents vitality, individuality, will-power and creative energy and honours. For a woman, it also represents her father, and later her husband. The Sun is one of the most important symbols in the birth chart, as much as the Ascendant, then the Moon (a bit less for a man), the ruler of the Ascendant and the fast-moving planets.
It's element is fire; it is hot and dry, it governs Leo, is in exaltation in Aries and is in analogy with the heart. It represents the boss, authority, beside the father and the husband ; the age of the Sun goes from 20 years old to about 40, following the Venus age when one is aware of his seductive power.
Temperament : Bilious
Characterology : Emotive, Active, Secondary, passionate type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to the Sun .
Your nature is marked by a constant concern for elevation and evolution. You want to project the image of a moral person, inhabited by a natural sense of justice and fairness. Your desire for discoveries prompts you to appreciate changes of life settings, explorations of the world, spiritual and inner journeys. Your enthusiasm may conceal a form of shyness and reserve. But the will to broaden your horizon prevails over your modesty. Sagittarius gathers. He readily listens to all argumentations, even to those he is not familiar with, and he has the ability to synthesize different logics. Therefore, he is not satisfied with stiff explanations and he strives to take advantage from the diversity of approaches and standpoints, without denouncing any of them a priori. He is a born unifier, an agent for cohesion. The Tradition emphasizes his civic sense, his respect for laws and morals. Possibly. What is certain is that you respect at least your own moral. More than anyone, you understand and you integrate the rules of the game and the specificity of each situation. This is a valuable asset when a new situation emerges and it becomes important to grasp the logic of its laws. Your qualities lay in the open-mindedness that allows you to quickly understand new circumstances and their stakes.
If the Sun is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Solarian: you loathe pettiness and Machiavellian manoeuvre, and you are fond of natural nobleness as well as of direct and honest attitudes. You endeavour to get out of muddled or dark situations as quickly as possible. Your need for transparency may lead you to make cut-and-dried judgments such as yes or no, and black or white. However, your honesty commands your entourage's consideration. At times, you come across as authoritarian. It is true that you never want to be thought of the notable absentee, and that you manage to make people pay attention to you, as well as to your plans and your assessments. To this end, the Solarian sometimes develops a great talent for placing himself under the spotlight without missing a single opportunity to arouse interest. Some other Solarians, although more discreet, still manage to be the focus of any debate, even in situations of exclusion. It is your way of being present even though you are actually not there... More than other people, you appreciate the esteem extended to you. It is useless to cheat with you, since in all areas you consider establishing enduring relationships only with those who love you, admire you, respect you, or express some degree of affection to you. Your will to straighten out your inter-personal relationships is your strength and sometimes, your Achilles' heel. You cannot achieve anything behind the scenes. Therefore, your comportment is marked with heroism, and your stands are devoid of ambiguity, in the sense that your commitments are unfailing, and your rebuffs, final.
"the full moon shines over coins of gold and silver scattered on the ground." ( janduz version).
Pleasant, clever, and flexible character endowed with excellent talents for mimicry. Driven by an acute intellectual curiosity, one is always willing to reckon with other people's experiences and reconsider one's standpoint. These are valuable assets which open the road to success, fame, and wealth. However, it is necessary to ensure that skills are not misused and do not translate into forgery or the manufacture of fake products, including counterfeit money. Otherwise, one would incur serious legal problems and would need to escape, as suggested by the scattered coins in the image.
N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

The Moon represents instinctive reaction, unconscious predestination, everyday mood, sensitivity, emotions, the feminine side of the personality, intuition, imagination. For a man, she represents his mother and later his wife, and his relationship with women in general. For a woman, the Moon is almost as important as the Sun and the Ascendant. Her element is water, she is cold and moist, she rules Cancer, is in exaltation in Taurus and is in analogy with the stomach.
She symbolizes the mother, wife, the crowd, the Moon is associated with birth and childhood. Tradition also matches her with the end of life, after Saturn the old age, it is thus customary to go back to one's place of birth to die: the end of life meets the very beginning.
Temperament : Lymphatic
Characterology : Emotive, non Active and Primary type or Non-Emotive, non Active and Primary, Nervous or Amorphous type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to the Moon .
On the day and at the time of your birth, the Moon was in the sign of Sagittarius. You have the soul of a traveller, whether your travel inside yourself or across faraway lands. Your independent nature constantly wants to enlarge your horizon, to discover and to explore new worlds... or its new facets. The word stagnation does not belong to your vocabulary: you effortlessly adopt foreign customs and habits that are different from your initial behaviours. Your lunar sign belongs to the Gemini-Sagittarius axis that is resolutely open on the external world. You display strong assimilation abilities and you adopt your entourage's habits and customs. Your life setting does not have the stiff character that others need to feel in security. You put up with rhythm changes and your balance is not upset by unforeseen events and contacts. On the contrary, you loathe solitude and you are very comfortable when you have to exchange and to relate to others. There may be a danger that you very cautiously avoid: your adaptation capacity must not turn you into a chameleon and it is important that you pay due attention to your needs and to your personal rhythms.
If the Moon is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Lunarian: the driving force behind your actions is mainly the pursuit of well-being and tranquillity. Your sensitive and romantic self lives on those periods of rest during which you let your imagination wander at will. This is your way of finding inspiration and balance. Nothing is allowed to disturb your feeling of fulfilment and security within a harmonious cell, be it a family or a clan. More than other people, the Lunarian is attached to those moments during which one forgets one's worries and lets oneself cast adrift aimlessly, with no other goal than to be lulled into an ambiance, a situation, or a perfect moment. Many people do not understand such absences and their meaning, which is to regain strength. These people readily describe you with such unflattering terms as apathy and nonchalance. Never mind! Some inspirations require surrendering as well as striking a balance derived from alternate action and passivity. Your qualities are expressed to the fullest in situations which demand familiarity and privacy. Your capacities to respect and blend into your environment is at least as valuable as some other people's aggressive dispositions. However, you are well-advised to avoid indolence and renunciation out of laziness or indifference.
Mercury represents communication, logical and rational mind, intellectual skills. Earth is its element, it is cold and dry, and it rules Virgo and Gemini, is in exaltation in Virgo and is in analogy with the arms, hands, nervous system.

Temperament : Nervous
Characterology : Emotive, non Active and Primary type or Non-Emotive, Active and Primary, Nervous or Sanguine type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Mercury .
Mercury describes your relationships, your communication skills and the way you relate to the external world. However, other astrological elements also influence these areas. The sign your Mercury occupies is significant only if Mercury is part of your planetary dominantes. In your chart, Mercury is in Scorpio. Your mind is curt, critical and controversial. You readily question the basis of your knowledge and you need to understand the hidden meaning of all information as well as the stakes underlying human relationships. Nothing is simple. You may be cynical or provocative when you want to find the true nature of the persons around you. Communication means understanding the inner mechanisms of a personality, even if it implies hounding your interlocutor into a corner. Love or hatred, never mind! The only important thing is to never remain indifferent.
If Mercury is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Mercurian: the tradition points out the importance of communication. From idle but enriching chatters to observation gift, such a dominant endows you with a wide range of expression. Human beings have one thousand facets and one thousand masks they wear according to circumstances and the fortunes of the game of life. You take the role of an observer who is avid for novelties, discoveries, and surprises. Everything catches your attention and becomes an opportunity for new encounters, relationships, and learning. The world amazes you, amuses you sometimes, and stimulates your curiosity. Because the most important thing is to discover, and because you consider that each new situation is packed with potentialities, you try to fill the gaps in your knowledge. Although your open-mindedness may scatter your centres of interest, it also enables you to carefully avoid sticking to only one immutable and rigid view. The slightest sign enables you to perceive the other side of the coin, as well as the infinite complexity of people and of situations. On the human plane, you seek the dialogue and the information without which you know that you are not able to fully grasp the nature of your interlocutor. This keen interest in the Unknown sharpens your inter-relational skills. All these qualities are traditionally associated with Mercury.
"on the seashore, a man riding a camel gazes in amazement at the sun rising over the horizon." ( janduz version).
Proud, independent, and fair character attracted to oriental matters. Success and fame can be achieved in politics and/or reforms and discoveries, particularly if the Sun is strong in the natal chart. This degree heralds that the greatest honours are granted, and that all ambitions are fulfilled, even the wildest ones.
Venus represents the way one loves, relationships, sharing, affectivity, seductive ability. For men, she also corresponds to the kind of woman he's attracted to (but not especially in marriage which is more symbolized by the Moon, Venus is the lover and not the wife). Her element is the Air, she is moist, rules Taurus and Libra, is in exaltation in Pisces and is in analogy with the kidneys, the venous system, the bladder, the neck.
She represents the artists, tradesmen, occupations linked to beauty and charm; the age of Venus goes from 15 to about 25 years old.
Temperament : Sanguine and Lymphatic
Characterology : Emotive, non Active and Primary type or Emotive, non Active and Secondary type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Venus .
Venus describes your affective life. On the day of your birth, she is found in Scorpio. You demonstrate a great instinctive strength that is connected with the complex way in which you feel the world and you experience your passions. You are able to love to distraction and to hate at the same time, with an intensity that appeals to your partners but also disturbs them. It is likely that your sexuality is very strong, demanding and full of dreams and fantasies. Passion is not an empty word for you. For worse or for better, you need to love, to desire, sometimes with outrageousness. Intense passion, developed sensuality, demanding sexuality: all ingredients are brought together for love. The devil takes tepid feelings, love without fire! It is important to experience your couple's relationship intensely, even dangerously. Your charm? Distance. Love is made of surprises and suspense: with malicious pleasure, you fuel crises, tears, tensions, and everything that can keep extreme passion alive. Love is a struggle, a conquest yet to be achieved. Of course, your partner never gets bored with you. Your sentimental vehemence suits couples looking for thrills. You may hurt the person whose heart elected you. Fatality! However, it is likely that your taste for extreme passion allows to experience exceptionally intense moments of happiness.
If Venus is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Venusian: you are a sensual and emotional person particularly receptive to the natural likes and dislikes aroused by your contact with people. You are prone to frequent instinctive aversions and true passions which are exclusively driven by the feeling of love. The heart has its reasons which Reason knows nothing of... Your balance is based on the richness of your affective life. Without love, the Venusian is resourceless, lost, and deprived of any reason for living. You have an obvious and strong will to charm and to arouse the attachments without which you cannot properly function. Every area of your life is thus marked by your affectivity. The danger is that you may "be taken in" by charm. In such cases, you would prefer to keep your emotions under better control. Thus, hyper-sensitivity has its own inconveniences. Nevertheless, better than anyone else, you know how to play with feelings and attractions. Although you are sometimes caught in the traps of an over sensitive emotionalism, feelings remain your best assets in many circumstances. There is another aspect to the Venusian dominant. According to the Tradition, this planet rules the Arts, and you are endowed with some degree of artistic dispositions, ranging from good to excellent.
"a nice and well-maintained garden. an uncultivated field with a donkey kicking." ( janduz version).
The garden symbolises a humble, nice, and conscientious character. Attention to detail and persistence bring about success and notoriety in natural sciences, botany, or horticulture. One may give one's name to a new species of flower or fruit. The donkey warns against stubbornness, laziness, and whimsical behaviour. A strong Mercury in the natal chart offsets the danger of violence and ruin heralded by this degree.
Mars represents the desire for action and physical energy, sexuality, strength. For a woman, Mars corresponds to the kind of man she's attracted to (but not especially in marriage which is rather symbolized by the Sun, Mars is the lover, not the husband). Fire is its element, it is hot and dry, and it rules Aries and Scorpio (along with Pluto), is in exaltation with Capricorn and is in analogy with the muscles and the spleen.
It represents the soldiers, sportsmen, warriors, surgeons, blacksmiths... ; the age of Mars goes from 42 to 50 years old.
Characterology : Emotive, Active, Primary type. It is a Choleric.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Mars .
The planet Mars indicates how you react to life concrete stimulations. It also describes your fighting spirit, your abilities to stand for yourself and to take action. With Mars in Pisces, your reactions are often unexpected and original. You have your own way to assert yourself. You do not react according to norms. You have a subtle, indirect, sometimes concealed way to influence the world. A world that moves you deep down and where you are alternately a pawn and the main player. You readily play with paradoxes, you take strange attitudes and you find disconcerting answers to life's concrete problems. You may not tackle common issues rationally, but better than anyone, you skilfully handle exceptional situations. The only danger is that, with your ambiguous attitudes, people may think that you are impenetrable.
If Mars is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Marsian: in your hand-to-hand struggle for life, you demonstrate an acute and active sense of confrontation with the world, with other people, and with your own destiny. You need to take action and to fight for your projects and your desires. You perceive all situations with deep intensity, and you react to the here and now without bothering to step back in order to ensure that events are under your control. You take up challenges with excessive foolhardiness as a consequence of your impulsiveness. However, better than anyone else, you know how to mobilise your resources in case of crisis. You take action whenever it is necessary to do so, and you are present in a timely manner. With Mars, your attitudes are dictated by the realities of the moment, by your emotions, and by everything which proved to have worked in the past. When this dominant is not well integrated, it may bring about an aggressive or impulsive behaviour. Therefore, you must learn to control your hyper-sensitivity and your fits of temper. You are also endowed with Marsian qualities: the fighting spirit and the taste for duel without which one may find oneself overwhelmed by events. When this willpower is well channelled, its precious energy enables to cope with all sorts of contingencies. There are a thousand ways to win, and a thousand challenges to take up with the enthusiasm and the dynamism which make life so worthy. A certain idea of life which is wild, passionate, and in tune with events.
"in a small chapel adorned with a cross, a prayer book is open. on the nearby table, there are a cello, a flute, a hammer, a carpenter plane, a microscope, and medicinal herbs." ( janduz version).
Reflective, benevolent, and inventive character endowed with gifts for occultism. One is a loner and works best in the silence and the calm of secluded places. Success and wealth can be achieved in a host of disciplines, among which, religion, philosophy, the arts, the craft industry, natural healing, research, etc. The natal chart shows which occupation is most suitable.
Jupiter represents expansion and power, benevolence, large vision and generosity. Its element is Air, it is hot and moist, and it rules Sagittarius and Pisces (along with Neptune), is in exaltation with Cancer and is in analogy with the hips and endocrinal system.
It represents the governors, magistrates, professors, religious men too; the age of Jupiter goes from 50 to 55 or even 70 years old.
Temperament : Sanguine
Characterology : Emotive, Active, Primary type; it is an extrovert Choleric. Actually the humid version of Mars, inclined to action like him.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Jupiter .
The planet Jupiter symbolizes expansion, broadness and generosity. Jupiter is associated with the functions of synthesis, enthusiasm and optimism. In your natal chart, his house position is more important than his sign position because, like Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, he is a slow planet. Many people born in the same period have Jupiter in the same sign. This is the reason why the sign occupied here is less meaningful than when it is occupied by the so-called fast planets, i.e. the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Therefore, some caution is to be exercised as you read what follows. Jupiter in Pisces increases your natural generosity and your dedication capacity. Your empathy is strong and you are inclined to offer your strength and your enthusiasm to the most deprived people and to give unlimited assistance to others. Your imagination is powerful and your feelings may flare up easily: with your sensitivity on the alert and your unbridled affectivity, you belong to the category of people who intuitively detect other people's sufferings and most valuable qualities of the heart, as if you were a human radar.
If Jupiter is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Jupiterian: because this planet brings about a keen interest in social and professional success, the Tradition considers it to be beneficial. Indeed, you know how to adjust to events and to jump at the chance when it arises. The members of your entourage gladly entrust you with high responsibilities because they are often impressed by your learning skills and your adaptation abilities as you deal with new structures and new languages. What is the secret of your good star? It is your self-confidence which wins public support. Now, what is the secret of your charm? Definitely, enthusiasm, euphoria, and exaltation. Exaggeration also. When this dominant is well integrated, it is a factor of affluence and optimism, and a certain degree of joviality enables you to easily fit into various spheres. It constitutes your main asset to manage your life. However, you must at times curb your desire for integration, lest your sense of opportunity turns into extreme opportunism. Here also, the key to success lies in a correct estimate of everyone's chances and possibilities. Although management is one of your forte, and you can adjust your objectives to current realities better than other people, you lack the hindsight which enables you to avoid short-term vagaries and daily fluctuations. If you strive too much to adapt, you run a risk of betraying yourself. This is the other traditional side of the coin with "The Greater Benefic"!
"a man chops wood in a glade. near the logs neatly arranged in piles, children do a circle dance." ( janduz version).
Honest, benevolent, and persevering character. After years of hard work, one achieves success and wealth in the wood or construction industry, in agriculture or horticulture. All occupations related to urbanism, especially the design of new cities, or the rebuilding of places destroyed by war or natural disasters, are also very favoured. Even after having reached the pinnacle of one's career, one remains simple and accessible, which commands people's respect.
Saturn represents concentration, effort, perseverance, time, the hard reality, inevitable consequences. Earth is its element, it is cold and dry, and it rules Capricorn and Aquarius (along with Uranus), is in exaltation in Libra and is in analogy with the bones (skeleton) and the skin.
It represents the grandparents, old people, scientists, knowledgeable men, Saturn corresponds to old age; it goes from 70 years old until death.
Characterology : Non-Emotive, Active and Secondary type or Emotive, non Active and Secondary type or sometimes Non-Emotive, non Active and Secondary type; it is a Phlegmatic, a Sentimental or an Empathic type
For more information, see the page dedicated to Saturn .
The planet Saturn symbolizes contraction, effort, time, limitation and concentration. Saturn eliminates anything that is not authentic, sooner or later. It is impossible to cheat him as he gives an irresistible desire to form a coherent whole with oneself, in responsible and wise ways. He is the great purifier. He represents our limitations but also our truth. In your natal chart, the house position where Saturn is posited is more important than his sign position because, like Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, he is a slow planet. Many people born in the same period have Saturn in the same sign. This is the reason why the sign occupied here is less meaningful than when it is occupied by the so-called fast planets, i.e. the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Therefore, some caution is to be exercised as you read what follows. Saturn in Sagittarius limits your taste for exoticism and for rebellion. On the other hand, he strengthens your sense of responsibilities and your authority. You focus on what is concrete and real and you avoid venturing into unknown territories.
If Saturn is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Saturnian: you gladly leave to other people the decision to take life as it comes. As far as you are concerned, you prefer to take advantage of your experiences in order to discover, to grow, and to question yourself.
"a woman lying on a sofa stretches her hands towards a casket full of jewellery. outside, a man is trampled by a billy goat." ( janduz version).
Greedy and sensual character. One indulges in depravation and is willing to sacrifice everything to meet one's materialistic and sexual needs. There is a strong probability of ruin. In the chart of males, there may be premature senility or impotence. In the chart of females, sex and flattery are used in order to misappropriate other people's wealth.
Uranus represents individual freedom, originality, independence, marginality, avant guard inspiration, ultra modernism. Fire is its element, it is dry, and it rules Aquarius, is in exaltation with Scorpio and is in analogy with the brain and the nerves.
It represents inventors, odd characters, revolutionaries.
Temperament : Nervous to the extreme
Characterology : Emotive, Active, Secondary type; it is a Passionate type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Uranus .
The planet Uranus symbolizes originality, independence and cerebral energy bursting suddenly. Uranus triggers the irresistible need for freedom that we have in ourselves. Uranus tends to break the constraints that have become unbearable and gives us the courage and the will to get rid of what has become a burden; when he is well aspected, he also indicates genius. In your natal chart, Uranus' house position is more important than his sign position because, like Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto, he is a slow planet. Many people born in the same period have Uranus in the same sign. This is the reason why the sign occupied here is less meaningful than when it is occupied by the so-called fast planets, i.e. the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Therefore, some caution is to be exercised as you read what follows. The sign positions of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have a collective meaning. They do not influence your personality, unless they are involved in numerous aspects or when they emphasize a personal point of your natal chart such as your Ascendant's ruler, an angular planet, i.e. a planet near the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Nadir or the Descendant. In such cases, the activity of the slow planet is very highlighted. Uranus in Sagittarius gives you the taste for feats and extraordinary adventures: as you are caught in the desire to discover, at any cost, you may become a hero, a conqueror, an explorer or, on the symbolic plane, a pioneer in such matters as philosophy, politics, economy or spirituality.
If Uranus is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Uranian: personal values are prevailing. Inner certainties fuel an inflexible will and a desire to call attention on yourself as well as to follow your beliefs through. This planet prompts you to behave with determination, to put forward your own truth, and to start your personal revolution. More than other people, you are willing to keep some degree of autonomy in all circumstances, and you often display an individualistic nature. In order to achieve your ideal of freedom and independence, you may act like a despot as you try to convince and to impose your views, whether smoothly or forcefully. Regardless of the flexibility of your comportment, some situations demand an absolute firmness as well as uncompromising, frank and straightforward attitudes. People may criticise you for your intransigence and say that you are a hardliner. Outsider's opinions don't matter! The most important thing is that you act in all conscience and reach your primary objectives. More than anyone else, you know how to use your willpower and to focus your energy on a precise aim, relentlessly, whatever the consequences might be. In the chapter of qualities, let's mention a definite sense of responsibility, an innovative mind open to techniques and modern ideas, as well as a natural self-discipline which overcomes many an obstacle. Therefore, people are well-advised not to hound you into a corner.
"two men fight one another with daggers. in the background, a book of law featuring a weighing scales and a gibbet is open." ( janduz version).
Aggressive, quarrelsome, and nasty character. It is absolutely necessary to keep violent instincts tightly reined in, lest the most terrible disasters happen.
Neptune represents escapism, impressionability, daydreaming, delusions, carelessness, deception or intuition, dishonesty or inspiration, telepathy. Water is its element, it is moist, it rules Pisces, is in exaltation in Cancer, though some authors say it is Leo, and is in analogy with the vegetative system.
It represents dreamers, mediums, magicians, merchants of illusion, drug addicts.
Temperament : rather Lymphatic
Characterology : Emotive, non Active, Primary or Secondary type; it is a Sentimental, or sometimes Amorphous type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Neptune .
The planet Neptune symbolizes extreme receptivity, intense emotional sharpness, impressionability and inspiration; it is the planet of mediums, mystics and religious faith. In an astrological chart, it indicates dilution, vagueness, understanding one's environment through emotions and the absence of clear and determined limits and structures. In your natal chart, Neptune's house position is more important than his sign position because, like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto, he is a slow planet. Many people born in the same period have Neptune in the same sign. Neptune in Capricorn brings a touch of humanity and emotion into your ambition made of cold and calculated vision. Or, on the contrary, it may disrupt your precise and clear vision of your professional future.
If Neptune is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Neptunian: your intuition is highly developed. You are of a contemplative nature, and you are particularly receptive to ambiances, places, and people. You gladly cultivate the art of letting-go, and you allow the natural unfolding of events to construct your world. You follow your inspirations, for better or for worse. At times, you display an extraordinary clairvoyance gift. You seem to be able to read your subconscious like a book, and you track down subtle underlying mechanisms, flaws, or open breaches. This innate intuition might explain the strokes of good luck which the Neptunian is sometimes credited with. However, you may also be the victim of illusions and misleading intuitions. You are an idealist, and you let your deepest aspirations prevail over the realities of the moment. Then, you set off in quest of some quixotic objective, living like a Don Quixote who relentlessly pursues an impossible dream. You have a great talent for psychology and the mysteries of the human soul. Since you instinctively perceive people's intents and motivations, as you swim in the complexity of human nature, you feel in your element. The subtlety of your perceptiveness is the source of both special affections and irrevocable rejections. What is the danger of such a dominant? If it is not offset by other influences in your natal chart, you may not have an iron will. Your trump card is your instinct, which may be developed to the extent that it becomes clairvoyance.
"amid a tranquil landscape, in front of a water spring, there is a little house with doors and windows wide open to all." ( janduz version).
Benevolent, broad-minded, and trusting character. One readily helps people in distress with genuine selflessness. However, more discrimination must be exercised in order to avoid being swindled by the very people who were given shelter, whether at home or in the professional area. This degree often describes a person who makes wrong decisions despite above average intellectual capacities.
Pluto represents deep transformations, mutations and eliminations, sexuality and magnetism, power and secrets, destruction with a view to regeneration, the phoenix rising from the ashes. Its element is indefinite; burning (like lava in fusion ?), it rules Scorpio, is in exaltation in Pisces and is in analogy with the sexual organs and excretion.
It represents dictators, sadistic people, violent characters, is instinctive and powerful but also mysterious with hidden strengths.
Temperament : rather Bilious
Characterology : Emotive or non-Emotive, Active, Primary type; it is a Passionate Choleric type.
For more information, see the page dedicated to Pluto .
The planet Pluto symbolizes deep disruptions and upheavals, domination and sexual instincts, and the inner power we have in ourselves. Pluto destroys in order to reconstruct and he provokes painful crises that are needed in metamorphosis. Pluto is our deepest instincts' brutal force. It is the hidden and unconscious violence that can explode in us with incredible intensity before being projected in our actions; in itself, the planet is not negative: the might and the intensity of its energy are beyond the conceivable but it can be funnelled. Pluto is the only possibility we have at our disposal to overcome our inner blocks and to eliminate outgrown situations that have become inextricable. Pluto's energy is valuable because of its usefulness for the irreversible destruction of what constitutes a problem and not because of its negative side and its perversity. Pluto allows to reconstruct and to regenerate parts of our personality or whole stretches of our life, provided that we manage to funnel his wild energy and to step back. It is impossible to tame this energy, given its essence. However, it is possible to take advantage of it for a precise aim, through a temporary identification of some parts of us with this energy. In such a case, the outcome is our final evolution and even, our transformation. In your natal chart, Pluto's house position is more important than his sign position because, like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, Pluto is a slow planet. Many people born in the same period have Pluto in the same sign. They do not influence your personality and they are not to be really taken into account, unless they are involved in numerous aspects or when they emphasize a personal point of your natal chart such as your Ascendant's ruler, an angular planet, i.e. a planet near the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Nadir or the Descendant. In such cases, the activity of the slow planet is very highlighted. Pluto in Scorpio is in his own sign, and according to the Tradition, he is most potent and at his best; sexuality and fantasies, powerful libido and instincts, strong domineering tendencies, outbursts of passions...
If Pluto is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Plutonian: you sometimes feel like a foreigner who does not belong to the world, to its laws, and its concerns. The rules of life in society are not necessarily yours. You are interested in what is unknown and in the subtle laws of a hidden order. So, you take malicious pleasure in ridiculing the patterns you find too simplistic or too rigid. You also revel in underlining the limits of explanations you deem too common. There is something unconventional about the way you are, the way you think, and the way you act. What is your specificity made of? Is it an extraordinary partner? A life off the beaten path? Or do you only distance yourself from conventional morals? In any case, you have the feeling, sometimes quite vague, that you come from nowhere, and that you do not belong to any definite group... In short, it means that you cannot be simplified in order to conform to existing models. The gap between you and ordinary mortals is also an element of your strength. Your deep clear-sightedness, firstly, enables you to put things into perspective and to grant them only the attention they deserve. Your other remarkable asset is your capacity to intervene from behind the scenes, to secretly organise events, and to bring about the desirable outcome without seeming to impose or to dictate anything. However, you must still overcome one of the major difficulties of this dominant, which is to get people to accept your difference and to smoothly fit into your environment.
"in the middle of a forest, a child wearing rags and seated on a tree log stares at a nest and its fledglings fallen on the ground." ( janduz version).
Compassionate, altruistic, and courageous character. Childhood is clouded by bad luck and the lack of parental affection. Lack of care during the period of body growth may result in frail health. Financial help is available from a female figure. One is not embittered by life ordeals, and in adulthood, one achieves success in non-profit associations or humanitarian work. This degree indicates the possibility to adopt a child.
Chiron is almost renowned and used everywhere. Most astrologers consider it as a kind of "mediator" between Saturn and outer planets. Consequently, Chiron is of Saturn's nature and at the same time is influenced by Uranus, the first slow-moving planet. Astrologically, it symbolizes wisdom, patience and the faculty to reduce others' sufferings: it is said to be the "great healer" of the zodiac. Like all the secondary bodies, it must be in close conjunction with planets or angles in order to fully express its action.
Ceres , the biggest of the four minor asteroids used besides Chiron, is associated with the mythological goddess of growing plants and harvest and also symbolizes physical constitution, vitality and fertility. She's also known as Demeter, according to the astrologer Zipporah Dobyns, linked to the symbolism of the mother but in a less emotive and more physical way than the Moon. Ceres is thought to be the ruler of Virgo, in exaltation in Gemini, in exile in Pisces and in fall in Sagittarius. Keywords associated with Ceres could be order, practical sense, worry, precision, modesty, method, sobriety, motherhood, fertility, the Earth: a kind of a more cerebral Moon...
Pallas is sometimes used in modern Astrology: she represents intelligence, abstract and global thinking talents. It is usually considered to be a determining element in political strategy.
Juno is the asteroid corresponding to the adaptation to the marital partner and to the defence of individual rights; it is thus used in the field of marriage.
Vesta is rarely used and brings the ability to efficiently devote oneself to a cause.
The North Node (True Node here) represents the goals that must be achieved during life, in the karmic sense according to some traditions. Its position in house indicates in what field an effort is necessary in order to evolve. The North Node is often called the Dragon's head, it is usually considered beneficial, a bit like Jupiter with the planets. The Lunar nodes are fictional points and not actual heavenly bodies: they are the intersections of the Moon with the Ecliptic (the path made by the Sun in its orbit as seen from the Earth). The axis of the Lunar nodes moves 19 degrees each year, namely a bit more than three minutes each day.
The South Node is diametrically opposed to the North Node, therefore it faces it (it's not drawn here, it's the same symbol but upside down). It symbolizes what has already been achieved or acquired, in a karmic sense: it's the past from which it's advised to move on in order to progress. The South Node is rather negative, of a Saturnian nature: the experience through suffering.
"an armed man in uniform is all set up for a difficult trip." ( janduz version).
Cautious, intelligent, and adventurous character. One is action-oriented and fond of discoveries and travels. Before embarking upon any new venture, one thoroughly assesses its potential difficulties and equips oneself accordingly. Success is obtained in pioneering projects involving foreign countries, exploration of unknown territories, science, and raw materials such as ore or petroleum. One is very likely to be rewarded for a major discovery in one of these fields.
Lilith or the Dark Moon (True Lilith here) represents the uncrossable threshold, taboos, the individual's provocative and fascinating side, including on a sexual level. She symbolizes violence and "untameability", the radical and deep-seated refusal to submit. The keywords for Lilith can be sterility, sadism, perversity, castration, sadomasochism, eroticism, orgasm, forbidden fantasies, marginality, cruelty; redemption, illumination, rebelliousness... Lilith's opposite point is called Priapus; it is the Lunar perigee, the position where the Moon is closest to the Earth. It symbolizes man's primitive nature, the horror hidden in our deepest self; masochism, extreme sensuality, impulsiveness, irrationality and excess. Physically speaking, the Dark Moon is the focal point unoccupied by the Earth: it is not a concrete body but a mathematical point.
"a young woman reclining on the grass under a tree feeds the birds coming up to her." ( janduz version).
Contemplative, refined, and generous character endowed with a strong fondness for nature and aesthetics. Success can be achieved in the arts, and particularly in poetry, singing and music, or painting. Marriage and family life are blessed with good luck. However, the body is sensitive to humidity, and one must try to live in dry locations. In solar revolution charts, this degree on the Midheaven heralds a big inheritance.
The Part of Fortune is an ancient concept, used by Ptolemy and other astrologers before him. Firstly, it has nothing to do with fortune! In modern astrology, it is actually used to enhance a planet or angle when in close conjunction with it: it thus amplifies the meaning associated to the point affected by its presence. It is calculated in the following way:
Part of Fortune = AS + Moon - Sun (it is the Moons position when the Sun rises)
The classical Part of Fortune, of which the calculus method is unchanged whether in a diurnal or nocturnal chart, is usually distinguished from the diurnal/nocturnal Part of Fortune which is calculated by the formula AS + Sun - Moon for a nocturnal chart, and AS + Moon - Sun in a diurnal chart.
We currently use the latter formula for our astrological programmes.
For more information, see the page dedicated to the Arabian parts .
The First House or Ascendant represents one's behaviour in the eyes of others, and also one's health. It corresponds to the way the individual acts in the world. It is the image of the personality seen by others and the person's visible behaviour expressed outwardly. The 1st House is in analogy with Aries and thus Mars too, and then the Sun. It is an angular house, the most important one with the Midheaven, maybe even more so due to its link with the body and health.
The Tenth House still called the Midheaven , is the highest point amidst the houses, at the top of the chart, in the South, and relates to destiny in general and career (and not daily work as meant by the Sixth House). The Midheaven represents our achievements and goals in the social sphere, our social position in society, and becomes more and more important as we get older. It is in analogy with Capricorn and Saturn. The Tenth House is the most important angular house along with the Ascendant.
The First House or Ascendant represents one's behaviour in the eyes of others and also one's health. It corresponds to the way the individual acts in the world. It is the image of the personality as seen by others and the person's visible behaviour expressed outwardly. The 1st House is in analogy with Aries and thus Mars too and then the Sun. It is an angular house, the most important one with the Midheaven, maybe even more so due to its link with the body and health; the Ascendant is as important as the Sun in a natal chart.

The Twelfth House is the sphere of hidden things, enemies, closed or remote places (hospital, prison, convent etc.), ordeals, secrecy, solitude, long-term illnesses but also sincere devotion and genuine compassion. It is in analogy with Pisces and Neptune.
The Vertex , sometimes called counter-Ascendant, is a fictitious point which is at the intersection of two great circles, the Ecliptic and the great vertical circle (Prime Vertical) in the West of the birthplace, linking the East, the Zenith, the West, and the Nadir. It is always located in the West of the chart around the Descendant. It is the chart's fifth angle, so to speak, less important than the other angles. Its interpretation is controversial, because certain astrologers pay no attention to it.
The Vertex is sometimes considered to be the second Descendant because, like the latter, it is related to communication and exchanges. It has to do with associations and fated encounters, those that are not chosen, and reveals the type of sensitivity and reactivity we have in our dealings with other people: a refined and tolerant way in Libra, straightforward and spontaneous in Aries, etc.
The East Point is a fictitious point at the intersection of two great circles, the Ecliptic and the great vertical circle (Prime Vertical) in the East of the birthplace, linking the East, the Zenith, the West, and the Nadir. It is always located in the East of the chart, around the Ascendant.
The East Point is sometimes considered to be a second Ascendant, less important, but also related to how one is seen by other people, and to how one expresses one's personality.

Vulcanus, sometimes said to be the higher octave of Saturn, provides strength to improve collective relations, to structure things, to be efficient, and to get straight to the point. On the downside, he may bring about arrogance and scattered efforts.
Poseidon is a hypothetical trans-Neptunian planet, the existence of which is not proven. It was invented by Alfred Witte, founder of the famous Hamburg School, and by his student, Friedrich Sieggrün. N.B.: numerous astrologers believe neither in the influence of Poseidon, nor in that of all hypothetical planets, asteroids, Arabic parts or other fictitious points.
Poseidon brings about wisdom, a clear mind, and sometimes spirituality. On the downside, it may make the person dogmatic, manipulative, or out of touch with reality.
Proserpina , sometimes referred to as Persephone, is a trans-Plutonian hypothetical planet. N.B.: numerous astrologers believe neither in the influence of Proserpina, nor in that of all hypothetical planets, asteroids, Arabic parts or other fictitious points.
Proserpina is related to mysteries, revival and reconstruction, as well as cycles. She enriches the unconscious, and gives the possibility to combine modern life with spirituality, the East with the West, and mysticism with concrete life.

Emory Andrew Tate III (born December 1, 1986) is an American-British social media personality, businessman and a former professional kickboxer. Following his kickboxing career, he began offering paid courses and memberships through his website and later rose to fame as an Internet celebrity. His misogynistic commentary has resulted in his suspension from several social media platforms. On December 29, 2022, Tate and his brother, Tristan, were arrested in Romania along with two other suspects. They are charged with human trafficking and forming an organized crime group. As of December 30, 2022 they are being held by police for 30 days. Career Kickboxing Tate started practicing boxing and other martial arts in 2005, and worked in the TV advertising industry to support himself. In November 2008, he was ranked the 7th best light-heavyweight kickboxer in Britain by the International Sport Kickboxing Association (ISKA). In 2009, he gained his first championship when he won the British ISKA Full Contact Cruiserweight Championship in Derby, and was ranked number one in his division in Europe. In 2011, Tate won his first ISKA world title in a rematch against Jean-Luc Benoit via knockout, having previously lost to Benoit by decision. In 2012, Tate lost the Enfusion championship tournament to Franci Graj. Before his loss, he was ranked second best light-heavyweight kickboxer in the world. In 2013, Tate won his second ISKA world title in a 12-round match against Vincent Petitjean, making him world champion in two weight divisions. He has since retired from combat sports. Media Big Brother and online ventures In 2016, while a guest on the British reality show Big Brother, Tate came under scrutiny for his homophobic and racist comments on Twitter. A video apparently showing him hitting a woman with a belt caused him to be removed from the show after only six days. Tate and the woman both said that they were friends and that the actions in the video were consensual. Tate's website offers training courses on accumulating wealth and "malefemale interactions". According to the website, he also operated a webcam studio using his girlfriends as employees. Tate and his brother Tristan started the webcam business, employing as many as 75 webcam models to sell "fake sob stories" to male callers, claiming to have made millions of dollars doing so. He later admitted that the business model was a "total scam". Tate operates Hustler's University, a platform where members pay a monthly membership fee to receive instruction on topics such as dropshipping and cryptocurrency trading. The website employed an affiliate marketing program, where members received a commission for recruiting others to the platform. Tate became highly prominent during 2022 by encouraging members of Hustler's University to post large amounts of videos of him to social media platforms in an effort to maximize engagement. As of August 2022, its website had amassed over 100,000 subscribers. That same month, the Irish-American financial services company Stripe pulled out of processing subscriptions for the platform, and Hustler's University shut down its affiliate marketing program. Paul Harrigan, a marketing professor at the University of Western Australia, stated the affiliate program constituted a social media pyramid scheme. Social media presence Tate received attention for his tweets describing his view of what qualifies as sexual harassment amid the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases and for tweeting several statements about his view that sexual assault victims share responsibility for their assaults. In 2017, he was criticized for tweeting that depression "isn't real". Tate initially became known among online far-right circles through his appearances on InfoWars and acquaintances with far-right figures such as Mike Cernovich, Jack Posobiec, and Paul Joseph Watson. He became widely known in mid-2022 and was searched on Google more times than both Donald Trump and COVID-19 that July. He has described himself as "absolutely a sexist" and "absolutely a misogynist". He has stated that women "belong in the home", that they "can't drive", and that they are "given to the man and belong to the man", as well as claiming that men prefer dating 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds because they are likely to have had sex with fewer men. The White Ribbon Campaign, a nonprofit organization opposing male-on-female violence, has called Tate's commentary "extremely misogynistic" and its possible long-term effects on his young male audience "concerning". Hope not Hate, an anti-extremism advocacy group, has commented that Tate's social media presence might present a "dangerous slip road into the far-right" for his audience. In response to criticism, Tate stated that his content includes "many videos praising women" and mainly aims at teaching his audience to avoid "toxic and low value people as a whole". He further stated that he plays a "comedic character" and claimed that people believed "absolutely false narratives" about him. In November 2022, after the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, Tate's Twitter account was unbanned. In December 2022, Tate addressed the environmentalist Greta Thunberg in a tweet extolling his carbon-emitting automobiles and asked for her email address to give her more information. Thunberg replied with the fake email address "[email protected]". The exchange received substantial attention on Twitter, becoming the sixth most-liked tweet ever by December 30. Social media bans Three of Tate's Twitter accounts have been suspended at different times. In 2021, an account that he created to evade his previous ban was verified by Twitter, contrary to their policies. The account was subsequently permanently banned, and Twitter said the verification occurred in error. In August 2022, following an online campaign to deplatform him, Tate was permanently banned from Facebook and Instagram, losing 4.7 million followers from the latter. Parent company Meta claimed he had violated their policy on "dangerous organizations and individuals". TikTok, where videos featuring Tate's name as a hashtag have been viewed over 13 billion times, also removed his account after determining that it violated their policies on "content that attacks, threatens, incites violence against, or otherwise dehumanizes an individual or a group". Shortly thereafter, YouTube also suspended his channel citing multiple violations, including hate speech and COVID-19 misinformation, and he later deleted his own Twitch channel. Tate responded to the bans by saying that, while most of his comments were taken out of context, he takes responsibility for how they were received. Media personality Jake Paul denounced Tate's sexism, but criticized the bans as censorship. Tate's content continued to circulate on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok after the bans via fan accounts. Following the bans, Tate moved to alt-tech platforms Gettr and Rumble making the latter briefly become the most downloaded app on the App Store. Personal life Tate moved from the United Kingdom to Romania in 2017, claiming "40 percent" of the reason for his move was his belief that Romania would be less likely to investigate sexual assault cases. Tate was raised Christian and joined the Romanian Orthodox Church after moving to Romania. He previously claimed to tithe £16,000 (around 89,000 Romanian lei) to the church on a monthly basis and said, "The church in Romania is very powerful and I like having church friends, so I give them a lot of money." When a video of him praying at a mosque in Dubai went viral in October 2022, he announced on his Gettr account that he had converted to Islam. Legal issues On April 11, 2022, the police raided two properties in Ilfov County, Romania, including Tate's mansion, after the U.S. embassy alerted them that an American woman might be held at the property. Two women were found, and claimed they were being held there against their will, sparking an investigation into human trafficking and rape by DIICOT, the Romanian anti-organized crime agency. After being questioned for five hours, both brothers were released. Tate later denied any wrongdoing, calling it a case of swatting. On December 29, 2022, the police searched five homes based on a search warrant, including Tate's Ilfov mansion. Four suspects were arrested and detained for a period of 24 hours, including both Tate brothers, a former policewoman, and an unnamed fourth Romanian individual. DIICOT alleges that the suspects "recruited and then sexually abused" six women in Ilfov, and formed a group in early 2021 "with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost". Both Tate brothers are charged with human trafficking and forming an organized crime group. One of the four suspects is charged with rape, but was not named by police. Following the 24-hour detention, DIICOT asked a judge that the suspects be held for 30 more days. The court acceded to their request late on December 30, and all four are being remanded in custody for a further 30 days by police.
Disclaimer : these short excerpts of astrological charts are computer processed. They are, by no means, of a personal nature. This principle is valid for the 69,256 celebrities included in our database. These texts provide the meanings of planets, or combination of planets, in signs and in houses, as well as the interpretations of planetary dominants in line with modern Western astrology rules. Moreover, since Astrotheme is not a polemic website, no negative aspect which may damage the good reputation of a celebrity is posted here, unlike in the comprehensive astrological portrait.
Here are some character traits from Andrew Tate's birth chart. This description is far from being comprehensive but it can shed light on his/her personality, which is still interesting for professional astrologers or astrology lovers.
In a matter of minutes, you can get at your email address your astrological portrait (approximately 32 pages), a much more comprehensive report than this portrait of Andrew Tate.
N.B.: as this celebrity's birth time is unknown, the chart is arbitrarily calculated for 12:00 PM - the legal time for his/her place of birth; since astrological houses are not taken into account, this astrological profile excerpt is less detailed than those for which the birth time is known.
When interpreting a natal chart, the best method is to start gradually from general features to specific ones. Thus, there is usually a plan to be followed, from the overall analysis of the chart and its structure, to the description of its different character traits.
In the first part, an overall analysis of the chart enables us to figure out the personality's main features and to emphasize several points that are confirmed or not in the detailed analysis: in any case, those general traits are taken into account. Human personality is an infinitely intricate entity and describing it is a complex task. Claiming to rapidly summarize it is illusory, although it does not mean that it is an impossible challenge. It is essential to read a natal chart several times in order to absorb all its different meanings and to grasp all this complexity. But the exercise is worthwhile.
In brief, a natal chart is composed of ten planets: two luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, three fast-moving or individual planets, Mercury, Venus and Mars, two slow-moving planets, Jupiter and Saturn, and three very slow-moving planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Additional secondary elements are: the Lunar Nodes, the Dark Moon or Lilith, Chiron and other minor objects. They are all posited on the Zodiac wheel consisting of twelve signs, from Aries to Pisces, and divided into twelve astrological houses.
The first step is to evaluate the importance of each planet. This is what we call identifying the dominant planets. This process obeys rules that depend on the astrologer's sensitivity and experience but it also has precise and steady bases: thus, we can take into account the parameters of a planet's activity (the number of active aspects a planet forms, the importance of each aspect according to its nature and its exactness), angularity parameters; (proximity to the four angles, Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant and Imum Coeli or Nadir, all of them being evaluated numerically, according to the kind of angle and the planet-angle distance) and quality parameters (rulership, exaltation, exile and fall). Finally, other criteria such as the rulership of the Ascendant and the Midheaven etc. are important.
These different criteria allow a planet to be highlighted and lead to useful conclusions when interpreting the chart.
The overall chart analysis begins with the observation of three sorts of planetary distributions in the chart: Eastern or Western hemisphere, Northern or Southern hemisphere, and quadrants (North-eastern, North-western, South-eastern and South-western). These three distributions give a general tone in terms of introversion and extraversion, willpower, sociability, and behavioural predispositions.
Then, there are three additional distributions: elements (called triplicity since there are three groups of signs for each one) - Fire, Air, Earth and Water - corresponding to a character typology, modality (or quadruplicity with four groups of signs for each one) - Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable - and polarity (Yin and Yang).
There are three types of dominants: dominant planets, dominant signs and dominant houses. The novice thinks astrology means only "to be Aries" or sometimes, for example, "to be Aries Ascendant Virgo". It is actually far more complex. Although the Sun and the Ascendant alone may reveal a large part of the character - approximately a third or a half of your psychological signature, a person is neither "just the Sun" (called the sign) nor just "the first house" (the Ascendant). Thus, a particular planet's influence may be significantly increased; a particular sign or house may contain a group of planets that will bring nuances and sometimes weaken the role of the Ascendant, of the Sun sign etc.
Lastly, there are two other criteria: accentuations (angular, succedent and cadent) which are a classification of astrological houses and types of decanates that are occupied (each sign is divided into three decanates of ten degrees each). They provide some additional informations.
These general character traits must not be taken literally; they are, somehow, preparing for the chart reading. They allow to understand the second part of the analysis, which is more detailed and precise. It focuses on every area of the personality and provides a synthesis of all the above-mentioned parameters according to sound hierarchical rules.
Warning: when the birth time is unknown, which is the case for Andrew Tate, a few paragraphs become irrelevant; distributions in hemispheres and quadrants are meaningless, so are dominant houses and houses' accentuations. Therefore, some chapters are removed from this part.
For all paragraphs, the criteria for valuation are calculated without taking into account angles and rulerships of the Ascendant and of the Midheaven. The methodology retains its validity, but it is less precise without a time of birth.
The predominance of Water signs indicates high sensitivity and elevation through feelings, Andrew Tate. Your heart and your emotions are your driving forces, and you can't do anything on Earth if you don't feel a strong affective charge (as a matter of fact, the word "feeling" is essential in your psychology). You need to love in order to understand, and to feel in order to take action, which causes a certain vulnerability which you should fight against.
Andrew Tate, Fire is dominant in your natal chart and endows you with intuition, energy, courage, self-confidence, and enthusiasm! You are inclined to be passionate, you assert your willpower, you move forward, and come hell or high water, you achieve your dreams and your goals. The relative weakness of this element is the difficulty to step back or a kind of boldness that may prompt you to do foolish things.
Earth qualities are under-represented in your chart, with only 5.60% instead of the average 25%. Deficiency in Earth may indicate that you have no interest in material and concrete values. It is likely that you live too much in your heart or in your mind, or even in your enthusiasm! The fact remains that you may end up in tricky situations, due to your lack of good sense or forethought: material life is unavoidable even if you are rather idealistic, dreamy, or easily content. You must tackle concrete life necessities, for fear of... being forced to cope with them, later, in much more unpleasant ways!
Air is under-represented in your natal chart, with only 0.00% instead of the average 25%. Air symbolizes the values of communication, exchanges with others, but also adaptability and flexibility abilities: if you don't get out of your cocoon to talk, to show interest in others, and to socialize, you may have problems understanding others. Because of your lack of flexibility or of your refusal to adapt yourself, you may be suddenly overwhelmed by events. You should get into the habit of talking, of phoning, and of thinking in terms of "mobility, flexibility, adaptability, change" in every circumstance. It will spare you so many troubles!
The twelve zodiacal signs are split up into three groups or modes, called quadruplicities, a learned word meaning only that these three groups include four signs. The Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable modes are more or less represented in your natal chart, depending on planets' positions and importance, and on angles in the twelve signs.
The Mutable mode is the most emphasized one in your natal chart, Andrew Tate, which indicates a mobile character that is curious and thirsty for new experiences and evolution. You are lively and flexible, and you like to react quickly to solicitations, but don't confuse mobility with agitation, since this is the danger with this configuration - and with you, stagnation is out of the question. Security doesn't matter as long as you are not bored. You optimize, you change things, you change yourself... all this in a speedy way.
The issue of dominant planets has existed since the mists of time in astrology: how nice it would be if a person could be described with a few words and one or several planets that would represent their character, without having to analyse such elements as rulerships, angularities, houses, etc!
The ten planets - the Sun throughout Pluto - are a bit like ten characters in a role-play, each one has its own personality, its own way of acting, its own strengths and weaknesses. They actually represent a classification into ten distinct personalities, and astrologers have always tried to associate one or several dominant planets to a natal chart as well as dominant signs and houses.
Indeed, it is quite the same situation with signs and houses. If planets symbolize characters, signs represent hues - the mental, emotional and physical structures of an individual. The sign in which a planet is posited is like a character whose features are modified according to the place where he lives. In a chart, there are usually one, two or three highlighted signs that allow to rapidly describe its owner.
Regarding astrological houses, the principle is even simpler: the twelve houses correspond to twelve fields of life, and planets tenanting any given house increase that house's importance and highlight all relevant life departments: it may be marriage, work, friendship etc.
In your natal chart, Andrew Tate, the ten main planets are distributed as follows:
The three most important planets in your chart are Pluto, Jupiter and Mars.
With Pluto as a dominant planet in your chart, you are a magnetic and mighty predator, like the Scorpio sign ruled by this planet, who needs to exert pressure on others in order to "test" them. You are always ready to evolve, to risk destruction for reconstruction - including your own - to live more intensely whilst imposing your secret authority on things and on people you encounter.
You may come across as wicked, cruel or too authoritarian, but actually you only follow your instinct, you sound people out, and you like to exert your domination simply because your vital energy is too powerful to remain inside. You are inclined to be passionate, with hidden motivations. You are sometimes misunderstood but one of your great Plutonian assets is to go successfully through each life ordeal with ever growing strength.
Jupiter, the planet of expansion, organization, power and benevolence, is quite emphasized in your chart. Like any Jupiterian, you are warm, open, sociable, consensual, active and optimistic. You can use your self-confidence to erase differences of opinion, and you leave the task of analyzing and perfecting things to specialists. Your role, and you know it since you were young, is to gather, to demonstrate your synthesizing and conciliatory mind, and to naturally reap its fruits - power.
You appreciate legality, social order but also order in general. With you as a leader, every plan or human entity can be organized and structured. You excel at supervising. The Jupiterian type is indeed the politician par excellence, and a positive Jupiter in your chart is synonymous with good integration into society, whatever the chosen path.
Is this idyllic picture really perfect? Certainly not: each planet's typology has its own weaknesses. One of yours is pride, like the Solarian, but your will of expansion at all costs may generate a form of exaggeration in everything, endless pleasure, inappropriate self-confidence that could lead you to rough materialism and the thirst for absurd material comfort - in the worst cases, of course.
Mars is one of your dominant planets and provides you with its efficient energy and enthusiasm: with a powerful Mars in your chart, action - but also will and ability to undertake - is not an empty word for you. You are active, dynamic, willing to fight, courageous, and you are never afraid to move mountains, even though risks are part of the adventures that you start with determination.
However, your patience is not always up to your boldness and a kind of feverishness, or even anger, can tarnish the quality of your achievements. That would be a pity since the Marsian is a champion in matters of efficiency! Mars symbolizes display of action, conquering spirit that favours discipline and order - beware of not being fussy - and lies at the frontier between action and brutality, between conquest and potential aggressiveness.
In your natal chart, the three most important signs - according to criteria mentioned above - are in decreasing order of strength Sagittarius, Scorpio and Pisces. In general, these signs are important because your Ascendant or your Sun is located there. But this is not always the case: there may be a cluster of planets, or a planet may be near an angle other than the Midheaven or Ascendant. It may also be because two or three planets are considered to be very active because they form numerous aspects from these signs.
Thus, you display some of the three signs' characteristics, a bit like a superposition of features on the rest of your chart, and it is all the more so if the sign is emphasized.
Sagittarius, an adventurous and conquering fire sign, is dominant in your chart: you are enthusiastic, enterprising, optimistic, very sociable, and mobile - you have itchy feet, both physically and mentally. Nobody gets bored with you because you are always planning things and suggesting excursions, at least... when you are around and not already gone on a trip! Obviously, so many movements for one man may scare people off, and some of them may even criticize your brutality or your tendency to loose your temper, but you are so warm and genuine, so expansive, isn't this a good thing? And all the more so, since your sense of humour is overwhelming...
With Scorpio as a dominant sign, you are a strong and astute person, complicated and passionate, sometimes destructive and intolerant, but strong-willed, tough and daring, sometimes bordering on aggressive. So many qualities and dangers combined in one person! Obviously, this often results in a natural selection of people around you: those who stand up to you or admire you and those who can't bear you anymore! But that is precisely what you want. You are what you are and you are not going to transform yourself just to please. You are too proud and you never dread confrontations, although your way of fighting is secret, like your nature that, mysteriously enough, you are so reluctant to reveal even to your close friends who will never understand you. That said... what a hellish charm you have!
Pisces is among your dominant signs and endows your personality with unlimited sources of emotions, dreams, imagination, and sensitivity, to the extent that you literally swim in a cloudy ocean of delightful impressions. These impressions are so intense and overwhelming that you don't really need to take action concretely, to show your dynamism or your willpower, since you already live so intensely with your feelings - you are as keen as a radar, always on the alert! That is why some people may not like your carelessness, and the lack of clarity in your opinions or actions; however they quickly notice your artistic talents, your poetic or artistic side, and your total lack of wickedness. Besides, you feel compassion for people in pain - empathy is one of your great qualities. Thanks to your flexibility, your intuition, and your generosity, you may spend an important part of your life helping others. And if you are creative or if you have well-known artistic talents, everybody will forgive your little flaws: absent-mindedness, lack of energy or of will, too dreamy temperament...
After this paragraph about dominant planets, of Andrew Tate, here are the character traits that you must read more carefully than the previous texts since they are very specific: the texts about dominant planets only give background information about the personality and remain quite general: they emphasize or, on the contrary, mitigate different particularities or facets of a personality. A human being is a complex whole and only bodies of texts can attempt to successfully figure out all the finer points.
Your nature is optimistic and emotional, Andrew Tate, and you are caught up in two incompatible longings: you are fond of exoticism and independence of movement, but at the same time, you feel comfortable in a form of middle-class attitude and conformism; in general, it translates into a succession of moods, now quiet and well adapted to the situations you experience, now marked by an irresistible desire for change and revival. You have a good and naïve nature, with a lot of self-confidence. Your emotionalism prompts you to live intensely a variety of numerous emotional experiences, a bit scattered, but with all the stimulations you need to be a balanced person. Your pleasant and welcoming attitude wins you some degree of popularity, all the more so because, despite your thirst for adventures that may scare away some people, you adjust to your environment's customs so easily.
You are the very type of the researcher endowed with great intellectual and imaginative capacities, Andrew Tate, and your curiosity is very deep. Researches, riddles and mysteries appeal to you and with a remarkable sixth sense and intuition, you endlessly try to unearth the truth, in all areas, like a psychoanalyst or a detective. You are a very secretive and introverted person, you find it difficult to open up and you rather prefer psychoanalysis. In spite of your clear-sightedness, you find it hard to deal with people: your critical mind, tinted with irony and causticity, may be destructive, especially since your determination and your stubbornness do not incline you to giving up. You are fond of provocations and you handle contradictions skilfully even though you may come across as dishonest.
In your chart, the Sun is in Sagittarius and Venus, in Scorpio. These two signs follow each other and are as opposite as they are complementary. The association of restive Scorpio with Sagittarius, open to all winds, is a paradoxical one. Your solar sign gives you an enthusiasm capable of arousing the most unexpected passions. You claim a commendable lack of prejudice and you manage to understand the other person's differences. However, to understand does not mean to accept Often, Scorpio's violent and implacable passions clash with Sagittarius' wide resolutions. For worse and also sometimes, for better. Your paradoxical sensitivity is also part of your strength, your richness and your charm. Sagittarius wants to thoroughly understand and he adjusts his thought process to his beloved partner's. However, this configuration does not describe a quiet conformism. Scorpio is possessive, unyielding and exclusive in his loves and his hatred. Therefore, it is difficult to anticipate your affective reactions. Sometimes, a real understanding of your partner, coupled with an unfailing affective impulse, allows you to experience the intense moments of a shared love. It may be followed by a period of paradoxical, sometimes cruel passions, tears and laughters. A time for if you don't love me, I love you. It is likely that it is your way to avoid what you dread most in the world: boredom born from stiff love.
You cannot dissociate love from passion, Andrew Tate. Your feelings are immediate, imperious, intense, and it is absolutely impossible for you to think of an amorous relationship without fusion, without the irresistible desire to know everything about your partner: emotions, feelings, sexuality, everything must be experienced in a possessive, absolute and unrestricted way. Actually, your feelings are as complex as they are deep. You seldom love, but when you do, a burning ardour and its torrid, violent frolics consume your couple. It is obvious that such powerful feelings may lead to jealousy and absolute exclusivity, almost bordering on the will to control your partner. If your relationship is genuine, all is fine. But if it is not the case, there are real dangers of shared wounds within your couple; it is hard to reconcile passion with tranquillity and it is clear that for you, sentimental serenity involves a partner who is either as complex as you and who instinctively understands you, or who is complementary, and as calm and steady as your impulses are intense and deep.
Psychologically speaking, your nature is extroverted and independent, oriented towards expansion and sociability. You have the soul of a leader, energetic and active. Your charisma and your drive are fully integrated into the collective life. Indeed, as an action-oriented fire sign, you challenge yourself and you succeed in accomplishing the task straight away. Sagittarius is hard to follow because his spirit and his independent mind constantly prompt him to go further and higher.
As you are born under this sign, you are charismatic, fiery, energetic, likeable, benevolent, tidy, jovial, optimistic, extroverted, amusing, straightforward, demonstrative, charming, independent, adventurous, straightforward, bold, exuberant, freedom-loving. But you may also be irascible, selfish, authoritarian, inconsistent, unfaithful, brutal, unreliable, reckless, tactless or unpleasant.
In love, Sir, you are the mobile fire that consumes everything in your way. You are constantly in love, you are passionate and your energy and your extroversion create a love life that could fit a serialized novel: mobile and changing, you are not the man of a single woman, at least until you find the person who resists you and who arouses a love powerful enough to tame you.
Your need for freedom and independence is so strong that it is difficult for you to settle down. Many break-ups are caused by a feeling of smothering, when your love of the moment becomes too demanding. However, since you are also unstable, you often patch up as if nothing had happened and you will be forgiven: this paradox comes from your explosive mixture comprising ardour, energy, benevolence and fickleness.
Similarly to the way in which you run your business, you will settle down when you reach your forties or your fifties. You become a good husband and a good father, well acquainted with the rules of your society, full of contentment and joy. Your home will provide the room you need so that you do not feel imprisoned.
You express your energy in a vague and random manner, Andrew Tate. This is not a handicap, but it prevents you from reasonably planning your long-term actions. You are a bit whimsical and scattered, sometimes hyperactive and willing to devour obstacles with your big shark teeth, but often, you take the easy way out because of your desire for tranquillity. You loathe conflicts and your cleverness and your flexibility allow you to achieve your goals while shrewdly worming your way through difficulties. Your intuition and your imagination are the assets that compensate your lack of efficiency and discipline. You are much more successful when you work for a noble cause, usually a collective one, sometimes political or spiritual ones. On the sexual plane, you are whimsical and impossible to categorize. You are so changing and malleable that you can shift from one extreme to another, according to your partner's personality, because your adaptability and your flexibility are really strong.

that well offensive coordinator just such a bad job that they went and got Ryan day and he spent he spent the next couple of years called him plays first as an office coordinator and then as the head coach we have some sections we want to hear but first here’s some numbers for you on Ohio State’s offense through two games and again we understand some of you national media that Ohio State has not played anybody big time yet we get that it’s okay let’s not make a big deal about it it’s two games they have 10 more to go
I have a beef with national media lately. I clearly step on 54 points a game. That’s fourth in the country and it’s first in the big 10, 7 .99 yards per play. That’s seventh in the country and it’s first in the big 10. The yards per player kind of up around college football right now. There’s a lot of teams who are about eight and typically being at 7 .99 should lead you in the country. But again, two games passing yards per play 10, passing yards per attempt. 10 .1 that’s 11th in the country and second in the big 10 rushing yards per play.
6 .15 yards and it’s 18th the big nationally in the first in the big 10. That would be terrible if it was 18th in the big 10. But also we now live in the world where somebody is 18th in the big 10. They have 27 first downs per game. It’s tied for seventh in the country and tied for seventh in the big 10. And I actually did this. They’ve had 24 drives, one of which was they just ran the clock out with Lincoln, Keenholds at the end of the Western Michigan game. So you take that drive off the table where it was clear, we’re just trying to get out of here.
The other 23 drives, 15 touchdowns, one field goal, six punts, two of those punts were three and out situations, and one turnover on downs. Andrew, seems pretty good to two games.
Andrew (02:18.958)
I think that’s a fair statement. think this is kind of what we expected. think there are two things that are true. There is never usually a situation where it’s kind of like one thing is absolutely true and everything else is wrong. Kind of like you were saying, I think there are probably some Buckeye fans like you were saying at the top, like the national media. Yes, I know they haven’t played anybody.
Stephen Means (02:23.073)
Andrew (02:47.468)
I’m sure there are some Buckeye fans who were like, Hey, this looks great. Can’t wait till we play Iowa to see this happen against Iowa. You know, can’t wait till we played Oregon to see this happen against Oregon. So I think there’s two things that are true, but I think through the first couple of games, there have been enough. Underlying things that I think we can look at as positive, right? So I’m a hockey fan and one of the things in hockey is, Hey, sometimes the puck doesn’t go in the net.
But the underlying possession metrics look really good and the underlying possession metrics would tell you that good things are on the horizon. And I think that’s where I’m at with this, where, hey, look, even if things get tougher down the line, I think we’ve seen enough in how they’re playing the game to feel really confident about where things are headed for the offensive, for Chick Kelly.
Stephen Means (03:39.089)
foundational, right, Stefan? I don’t think we were gonna walk away from this. Hey, let’s see what Ohio State’s offense looks like against Akron in Western Michigan. And then we’re gonna be ready to crown them the national champions, the greatest offense of all time. Joe Burrow, we don’t even remember your offense in 2019 anymore. Who cares? Urban Meyer in Florida, who cares? It’s all about, no, we just wanted to see foundational pieces. But I do think those numbers, plus some others I probably could have gotten into, but that I didn’t hear, were probably foundational pieces.
Stefan Krajisnik (04:09.552)
Yeah. And the number that really stands out to me and, you know, I know we’ll go into a little bit more here, but like the, the running aspect of what Chip Kelly’s added to this offense. And if you want to say it’s only two games, two games against bad opponents, well, okay. There were two games are averaging 220 rushing yards per game last year in four non -conference games. was 137 rushing yards per game. like, even if you want to take away this, this aspect of it’s the competition. Okay. Well, it’s compared to last year’s competition. I know Notre Dame was in there, but.
It’s still four games, two games. That’s kind of comparable than 12 games, two games. And the rushing attack is no doubt much better. And that’s the kind of stuff you build off of. is this offense built off of? Kelly said yesterday, when you established a run, we saw it in game one against Akron, right? Ryan Day was saying how, you know, the running game wasn’t working early, but Chip kept wanting to establish it, wanting to establish it. And eventually they broke through. And then it also opened up the passing game. When you talk about foundational, you know what at its core this offense is.
And it’s a strong running attack that opens the passing game. And when you got receivers like that, if the defense is drawn in even just a little bit, thinking about the running attack, it makes for so many explosives, so many big plays. So the foundation of what chip is established, even if it’s through two games is clear because when it comes to, you know, national championship game against Georgia, guess what? Ohio State is going to try to run the dang ball and establish a run and open up the passing attack. And we’ll say, yeah, we saw that against Akron. We saw it against Western Michigan. We saw it against Marshall. And yes, this is Georgia.
the same principles applies and that’s where foundation comes from.
Stephen Means (05:41.585)
So the first place we want to attack this with Chip Kelly being Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. Obviously, he’s known Ryan Day for a long, long, long, long time. was a quarterback coach at one point. He was a boss at one point when Ryan Day was working in the NFL as well. And now Ryan Day is his boss. It’s just interesting how things come full circle like that. Chip Kelly obviously came from UCLA, but he was more known for what he was doing at Oregon as well. Spent some time in the NFL coaching in Philadelphia Eagles as well. Has been around for 30 plus years. Andrew, I want to start with you because
You saw what Ohio State’s offense was up close and personal before Chip Kelly got here and Marvin Harrison Jr. Wonderful. it’s this is not a Ohio State’s offenses were in the dark ages and then Chip Kelly showed up and then all of a sudden now they know what the forward passes there. Their offenses have been pretty good before Chip Kelly got here, but it needed some tweaks, obviously, just like any good thing. Nothing’s perfect. Where is Chip Kelly’s influence felt the most in terms of the offensive philosophy?
for where Ohio State’s office is in 2024 in comparison to maybe where it’s been in some years past.
Andrew (06:46.016)
Yeah, I think the philosophy is to me, stretching things out. And I mean that in a couple of different ways. I think the philosophy of stretching things out in a play call is pretty notable. I think we’ve seen Will Howard move around the pocket. Like people might take this the wrong way and I don’t intend it to be like Will Howard’s not a five step drop, seven step drop.
quarterback. You want to move that guy around. You want to have him using his legs because that’s part of what makes him a dynamic quarterback, right? Like that’s part of what makes him unique. And I think Ohio State has leaned into that. So a little bit chicken to the egg there where it’s like, all right, well, if Ryan Day was still calling plays, would they be doing this a little bit more with Will Howard? I would say probably. But I think they have I have seen a noted change in
the way that they are kind of attacking teams and using the whole field. I’ve seen it feels like they’ve run more RPOs. They’ve spread the ball around a lot. I know again, some of this is personnel. So again, chicken to the egg where it’s like, I would bet you that if Ryan Day or Stephen Means or Joe Schmoe was calling plays, they’d be splitting up running back carries between Trevion Henderson and Quintchon Judkins. I bet you they’d be doing RPOs with Will Howard, but
I think that is where you were seeing Chip Kelly, where he really kind of shines and where he really kind of shows up is that the diversification of this offense is really making teams sweat and really kind of moving them east west. That is something that I think I’ve noticed over these first couple of games. And again, we’ll see this when they play Iowa, when they play Oregon, when they play Penn State, when they play Nebraska, like when they get into it and they get into the season.
and there’s nothing to hold back and the offense is kind of firing. I think we’ll start to see maybe what the fully operational death star might look like. But right now I have seen definitely a more, I’ve seen an increased willingness to kind of stretch the field East West and really kind of move things around and get people moving to kind of open things up for other players in the offense.
Stephen Means (09:08.497)
Before you go, Stefan, I just, since Andrew decided to make me an offensive coordinator for a second there, anybody who’s been listening to this podcast for any level of time knows if I was running an offense, we would be in 10 personnel as our base and we go empty off of that. I would never recruit Titans.
Stefan Krajisnik (09:28.994)
Andrew (09:29.102)
Steven has tight ends on the field when you’re kneeing the ball at the end of the game to seal the victory. That is it.
Stephen Means (09:34.575)
Andrew (09:40.194)
That’s okay. I understand.
Stefan Krajisnik (09:41.828)
I think by now, if Stephen was offensive coordinator, Treyvon and Quinlan would have both been on the field for plenty of snaps.
Stephen Means (09:48.11)
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Stefan Krajisnik (09:53.252)
He’s just running Y -Cross over and over and over.
Stephen Means (09:55.631)
That’s it. That’s it. That’s all I’m doing. And I respect the tight end position. In fact, it’s fun having a college football video game again, because we can talk about I use the tight ends a lot in my in my program a lot. But in real life, no, we’re seven on seven in this thing, man. But I like that answer, Andrew. And Ryan Day was talking about that on Tuesday a little bit. And we’re going to get into this when we talk about fastball a little bit. But Ryan Day was the thing for me that stood out was
When he got asked that question about what their fastball is, he didn’t go passing game first. And I think in years past, he would have gone with the passing game. When Ryan Day got high and he says this a lot, uses this term a lot, the idea of he wants to make the stretch the field vertically and horizontally. He wants to make defensive coordinators have to cover every area of the field because it’s all a problem. And it’s felt like a lot of times that’s applied to the passing game, right?
They’ll do the bubble screens. They’ll throw it out wide. Obviously they’ll take deep shots. They’ll throw it in the intermediate. They’ll do everything in the passing game. But then the run game, was a lot of, joke about stretch to the boundary a lot, but that’s what it was. If they were in pistol, they were going to run the ball. We didn’t see them running out of shotgun a lot. It was out of pistol or it was under center. And that’s what we saw them running the ball. And it’s fine when it works, when it’s J .K. Dobbins in 2019 and it works. But the problem is J .K. Dobbins left and it stopped working as efficiently. We have seen
a variety and different run schemes. This is according to PFF. And again, we always say, take it all with a grain of salt, just like anything in life, take it with a grain of salt. But you’ve got, they’ve been pretty even in terms of zone schemes and gap schemes and how they’re running the ball, especially with Quincyon Judkins, maybe more than anything else. James Peebles has been more zone scheme than gap scheme, but that’s probably because he’s a true freshman. And a lot of times when he’s in the game, you are running inside zone. Trey Browning, Henderson’s been the opposite way though. He’s been a lot of gap schemes.
Quincyan Judkins, almost 50 -50 in those matters. But I feel like that philosophy, where you said it, Andrew, it’s stretching, you said stretching things out. I think that a philosophy has applied to the passing game for eight years. I think in 2024, that philosophy is now being applied to the run game. And that’s where I think the, in terms of philosophy, where it’s been applied the most. What do you think, Stephon?
Stefan Krajisnik (12:15.268)
Yeah, I don’t want to echo too much of what you guys have said because that’s the direction I was going to. You know, just think for lack of better term, there’s some complex simplicity to what he’s brought. when you see the off, like if you were to read a piece of paper with everything that Chip Kelly can run and has run in his career, you’d probably be like, this is so much information that I cannot process. But we’ve seen a lot with, you know, I had the opportunity to cover Mike Leach, like his offenses were like this. is like this where.
Stephen Means (12:25.925)
Stefan Krajisnik (12:45.848)
The play calls, the play themselves are simple at their core, right? Like a receiver, there’s a good chance throughout the course of the game that it’s being decorated differently, but he’s running like the same route, right? there’s just, there’s so much that goes into it, but coaches like Chip Kelly do such a good job of simplifying it for players. think it was, if not mistaken, Nick Foles had once talked about Chip Kelly’s offense and he said that it was the easiest offense he’s ever run and not because it was a
an easy offensive defender wasn’t simple, but for a quarterback, it’s so easy to process because at its core, you know what’s going on. So that’s just one thing that I thought that the complex simplicity of it all makes it so easy for the offense to understand, so difficult for the defense to defend.
Andrew (13:32.088)
So yeah, one of the things that I thought was really interesting too, this was back in like the spring or something. And I think this kind of illustrates the point. LeBron James on his podcast was talking about how great of a coach Eric Spolstra was and Spolstra went out to...
Stephen Means (13:49.445)
LeBron has a podcast?
Andrew (13:54.899)
Or what was it? JJ red X or. I don’t know. I thought it was a pod. thought it was a pod.
Stephen Means (13:57.007)
I’m not sure I don’t know I forgot that well yeah I’m sorry
Stefan Krajisnik (13:59.908)
Yeah, he’s a joker. He also has a... doesn’t he have an ESPN Plus show too?
Andrew (14:04.107)
Might have been, might have been something, but...
Stephen Means (14:05.711)
No, no, I completely forgot that LeBron and his now head coach were doing a podcast for two months and potentially telling us that JJ Reddick was going to be his head coach. Sorry about that. Continue. You’re very eloquent point.
Andrew (14:10.091)
Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Stefan Krajisnik (14:10.105)
Stefan Krajisnik (14:15.312)
Andrew (14:15.802)
So what I was going to say was I was like, think Chip Kelly is kind of known in more than just, you know, in more than just, you know, football circles of kind of how he approaches offense. Cause Eric Spolstra went out to Oregon when Chip Kelly was there. And LeBron told this story about how Eric Spolstra was, you know, talking to, to Chip Kelly and just asking him about how you stretch teams.
to make them defend every part of whatever area they need to. And I think that that is something that is really interesting. And you hear offensive coordinators talk about it all the time. we want to make them defend every blade of grass. Well, I think Chip Kelly is really good at that. And I think that’s one of Chip Kelly’s positives. I think, again, I think that just kind of illustrates the point of just how unique of a mind Chip Kelly is and kind of where people think.
or how people think of Chip Kelly. And it’s more than just college football. Like this is something where people can kind of look at Chip Kelly and say, wow, what he’s doing is really unique. And this is a philosophy that extends to more than just what he’s doing in college football.
Stephen Means (15:30.253)
One of these days, I’m going to convince CJ Stroud to let me do a podcast with him. And then two months after we started the podcast, I’m going to be the head coach of the Houston Texans. No, but yeah, I think we all. To the point of what we’re talking about here, it’s the fire said earlier, we’re running the same route, we’re just showing it in a very different way. I think that’s what we did it. My I do like that we all put titles on this in a way.
Kudos to all of us. Andrew’s stretching things out. Stephon, complex to simplicity. Mine is run it like you throw it. Run it like you throw it. You have amazed all these different ways that you dress things up and you approach the passing game. Do the same thing with the run game. And that was, it wasn’t complex simplicity in your class. It was just simple. It was simply complex in years past. Cause it was so simple and it wasn’t working. And now it feels like,
They’re doing everything under the sun and they had been doing that with the passing game Approach that in the same way with the run game and what that means is you’re attacking every area of the field even with the run game Okay, Stefan, you’re gonna go first here Where do you feel like Chip Kelly’s influence is felt the most in terms of a position group and right now obviously we do know he is also the quarterbacks coach along with being the offensive coordinator But that does not mean you have to pick quarterback
Stefan Krajisnik (16:53.68)
Well, I’m going to pick quarterback. and it’s, it’s weird to say because the quarterback room has been really good under Ryan day, like even my kind of court who gets criticized probably as much as any quarterback under Ryan day, statistically at a pretty decent year and you know, one 11 games with Ohio state. so what will Howard have been really good at Ryan days offense? Yeah, probably. But.
I think we’re seeing an experience helps with this, but I think we’re seeing a different version of Will Howard than we saw Kansas State just because this offense makes it really easy for him to make the right decision. And I’m not saying that when he’s in the backfield and he has a split second to make a decision that it’s like, it’s an easy job to do. I’m not saying that, but it’s an offense that gives him so many options that it’s very rare that he’s going to take the wrong one because if he has three options on the play,
Frankly, two of them are probably good options and it’s a matter of does he take the better one or does he take the good one? Right. And I think Chip’s offense just does that. It goes back to Nick Foles quote, like he makes it so much easier on his quarterbacks to see the field, to see the options, to see, you know, the potential for, what, for a big play when it’s there. So I just think Chip coming in has made life so much easier for Will Howard. Maybe it was tough in February and March when he was learning the offense, but now that we’ve gone to August and September.
and he’s gotten some games under his belt. I think he’s growing an understanding of this offense. And I think it’s just because Chip has that influence where he can simplify it so much for a quarterback that when Will goes out there, it doesn’t seem as difficult as you might’ve thought, or as it might’ve looked, you know, at Kansas State or other stops that he’s been there just because of the influence that Chip has.
Stephen Means (18:45.999)
So I didn’t go quarterback. I understand why you went in that direction. I didn’t and I’m going where I think Andrew is also going to go with this and that’s the offensive line. And the reason why I can’t do quarterback is because there’s just so many hands in that kitchen already that have shown us that will would have been good anyway, right? There’s a base. There is a baseline level of how good Ohio State’s quarterback is going to be going forward. I think and I think
Kyle McCord last year is probably the floor of that. Well, obviously we know what the ceiling is. mean, the ceiling was you had three straight guys behind the trophy finalists and me first round draft picks. But the real silly though with CJ Stroud is like maybe generational. But the floor is Kyle McCord is still one of the 15 best quarterbacks in college football, even if he the standard is the standard. Right. And so in years past and I think Nathan and I had a part about this last year when we were talking about
I made the point of so Corey Dennis is your quarterbacks coach, but Ryan Day is a quarterback coach by trade. Even though he’s a head coach, you’ve got Todd Fitch on the raw on your staff as an analyst. Now he’s down at LSU. Obviously it’s just a lot of people talking in there. So who’s actually teaching right? And now obviously Chip Kelly is the guy in charge of that room, but quarterbacks are coming here because Ryan Day is here. You got Billy Festler’s in that room. Who’s really they think highly of.
Riley Larkin, I believe, is still in that room. They’ve got enough guys in that room, along with the fact of the proof is kind of in the pudding at that position already that again, baseline level of talent to where I don’t know if quarterback was going to ever be where Chip Kelly’s most influence was. It just makes sense that your offensive coordinator who’s calling plays is also your quarterback’s coach. I think just, you know, in your building a coaching staff, that makes sense. While with the offensive line, Andrew, they’re moving guys.
And they’re moving guys. Now again, we understand level of talent that they have played so far, but at least the execution has looked pretty sound and solid in a way of like, okay, I can envision what that’s going to look like once you start playing better opponents.
Andrew (20:57.58)
Well, I don’t know if I would go that far because I think if you remember after the the Akron game, we were kind of like the offensive line didn’t look as dominant as they should have. I think that that was definitely a concern that we have, but I also am taking the offensive line as the influence here because I think what Chip Kelly can do with the run game allows the offensive line, the ability.
to kind of take that next step. And here’s why. One of the more interesting things Chip Kelly said to me, this was spring or training camp. They all blend together, sometimes these press conferences. But Chip Kelly said athletic when he was asked about the offensive line and kind of what stands out. And he talked about kind of, you know, you don’t go into a year saying this is what we’re going to run no matter what. This is my playbook. This is my offense. This is what we’re going to do.
Stephen Means (21:28.529)
That was...
Andrew (21:55.566)
you have to kind of build your offense around your personnel. And this is not a team, I don’t think, and I don’t even necessarily think this is that big of a criticism. This is not a team, I don’t think, that is going to say, get low fire off hat on a hat. We’re just going to drive people eight yards off the ball downfield because we all weigh 325 pounds and we’re a bunch of maulers. They’re a bunch of road graders. I think that’s
Ideal, but I just don’t think that’s it. think athletic is an absolute kind of on the nose example of this. I think you think of guys like Josh Simmons and, you know, Tegra Shabola and, you know, Donovan Jackson and Seth McLaughlin. were, you know, clips kind of surfacing on him of, you know, making it that second level on Twitter after that Western Michigan game. Like you’ve got enough there where you don’t need to drive people off the ball because
with enough motions, you know, he said that there’s always he said the other day with enough motions, there’s always a reason for it. You can get people moving. You can get people kind of reacting to things and then you can get them on their heels. And that’s when you drive them off the ball. You don’t have to just say man on man, one on one head up to head up eye to eye. We’re going to drive you off the ball. That’s not their offense. Their offense is let’s get linemen moving 45 degrees left, 45 degrees right.
East West, let’s get them moving. Let’s get them pulling. We’ve seen run designs that we haven’t seen before, and that is allowing this offensive line to be able to move a little bit in space. And that’s where they’re going to make their money. That is where I think Ohio State’s offensive line has seen the biggest impact. That’s where they’ve improved the most, I think, because, you know, again, you don’t have to do that. If you’re moving guys left and right, and then all of a sudden you can, you know, you’re trapping players and, you know, defensive tackles don’t know what’s coming and.
You know, you’re, running zone reads and defensive lineman have to read and you can move them off the ball that way. Like there’s more than one way to skin a cat on the offensive line. And I think that that is where that influence can shine through because it doesn’t have to be your. Woody Hayes offense, right? Like when you run the ball, it doesn’t have to be your, your Navy army air force offense. When you’re running the ball, you can do a lot of different things running the ball that are really creative. And I think that
Stephen Means (24:14.481)
Andrew (24:18.942)
He is exactly as advertised and when we talked about them hiring him, that was one of things we’ve said and I think through two games that’s all true.
Stephen Means (24:27.313)
You want to see a depressed Steven. Force him to cover a triple option team. That’s when you get a depressed even that’s when you get them. Now to be fair, Chip Kelly has called Howard the run game coordinator and he says that’s what the quarterbacks are supposed to be. So he does play a role in that and I’m not sure if that was necessarily the case in years past. I’m not saying it wasn’t, but I’m not sure if we’ve never heard Ryan Day come out and say that about a quarterback the way Chip Kelly has been saying about a quarterback. So I think it does go hand in hand, but it’s just
If the run game is where the biggest impact of Tier Kelly being here has shown up and the biggest problem with the run games at times has been the offensive line and their ability to execute in the run game, then I think that goes hand in hand where where the most influences may be felt. I brought it up earlier. If we had to say what Ohio State’s fastball is right now, Andrew, what would you say is their fastball?
Andrew (25:21.282)
The this is a weird answer. you might you might. Yeah, Buckeye talk. You might deem this cheating. I think their fastball is five yards from the line of scrimmage to five yards downfield. And I think that that is their fastball. I think their RPO game is what their fastball is. Their quick game in the passing game and their running game. I don’t think that this team’s fastball is.
Stephen Means (25:24.219)
Bye -bye, talk.
Stephen Means (25:29.307)
John is done.
Andrew (25:49.166)
make Will Howard and drop back and have him, you know, throw an 18 yard out, you know, you know, in front of the safety and behind the corner. That’s not what they’re going to have to do. I don’t think they’re, their fast ball is we’re going to line up in this I formation. We’re going to drive people off the ball. Like I was just saying, I think this team’s fast ball is we’re going to dominate the area between the line of scrimmage and five yards downfield. And we are just going to absolutely ruin teams by making them come up close.
because they’re going to have to defend the RPO they’re going to have to defend our unique run game with counters and traps and sweeps and all these other things that they’re not looking for so I think Ohio State’s fastball again it’s a weird answer but the quick game the quick stuff the quick hitting stuff it’s not long drawn out hey we’re going to run four verts all game hey we’re going to have guys running 20 yards downfield and we’re going to make big throws and we’re just going say
you know, F it Jeremiah down there somewhere. I don’t think that that’s their fastball. Their fastball is exactly what Will Howard has done, I think, against Western Michigan, where they’re going to run the ball really well, and they’re going to use that sideline to sideline stuff. But they’re also when they throw it, it’s going to be quick. It’s going to get out of Will Howard’s hands really fast. Defenses are going to have a really hard time defending that. I think that that is what’s Ohio State’s fastball. Not anything that’s kind of what we’ve seen in previous years. I think this is a little bit unique and
when Ohio State leans on something, I think it’s gonna be getting the ball out of players hands very quickly, moving things around, making defenses have to scatter.
Stefan Krajisnik (27:20.132)
For the record, if Jeremiah is down there somewhere, could also work.
Andrew (27:23.564)
That could also work, absolutely. That could work, indeed.
Stephen Means (27:27.633)
If I was the offensive coordinator, that would be my play call. But it would be my play call every three plays. It’s like, they know you’re going to do it. Okay. Did you see what he just did? He took a 10 yard hitch and turned into a 70 yard touchdown. You think I care that you know I’m going to do it? That’s the whole point of a fastball is that the other team knows you’re going to do it. And yet you do it anyway and you succeed at it. Andrew, I thought that was a wonderful answer. It just started off weirder than it needed to. It’s like you tried to use it.
Stefan Krajisnik (27:30.769)
Stephen Means (27:54.875)
Quick game and RPO was saying, we were both saying like, where are you going with this? And then you said, quick game. It’s like, that’s where you’re going with this.
Andrew (28:01.602)
Yeah, quick game RP and even those like work in those like sideline to sideline sweeps and like that that elongated run game not the hitting just will Howard takes a snap turns and quench on Judkins he just turns it right into his gut and all of a sudden it’s a three yard cloud of dust that’s not
Stephen Means (28:07.246)
yeah, I get it.
Stephen Means (28:18.161)
Listen, listen, I get it, I get it, I get it, what I’m saying is if like someone asks you, say you’re 25 years old and someone goes, hey, how old are you? You go, I am 15 plus 10. Instead of just saying 25.
Stefan Krajisnik (28:31.512)
Andrew (28:32.206)
Is that not how you normally answer when people ask you how old you are? I’m 20 plus 10.
Stephen Means (28:34.641)
Stefan Krajisnik (28:35.888)
Andrew said this is going to be a weird answer and then his first 10 words made no sense and then the answer was very logical. He just laughed into it. He just laughed into it and I was like where exactly are we going with this?
Stephen Means (28:43.545)
Yeah, that’s what I’m
Andrew (28:47.894)
Look, honestly, if you haven’t come to expect this from me by now, then honestly, like I’m more surprised that you guys are surprised.
Stephen Means (28:52.197)
No, it was fine. No, I wasn’t surprised. I just wanted to let you know. Listen, that wasn’t weird. In fact, I think it’s the right answer, at least for right now. Now, Ryan Day says they’re still figuring that out, but I do think from the first two games, that’s probably what it’s been is quick stuff, right? Will Howard’s ability to make decisions and read it the right way. And when it’s time to give it, when it’s time to pull it and throw, when it’s time to tuck it and run for himself, and then
Sprinkle in because you do have to push the ball down the field. You can’t just not do it at all. It’s not going to be the same way that it was with Justin Fields where their fastball was J .K. Dobbins. And then the change up was play action. J .K. Dobbins. Hey, Chris Olavi, you’re going to be five yards open down the field while the C .J. Stroud. was we’re going to use every part. It’s arm and his mind was the fastball last year’s fastball was we have number 18 and everybody else doesn’t.
So let’s see what you can do about that. I do think right now it’s Will Howard’s ability to make decisions in the RPOs and in the quick game and then sprinkling in the push the ball down the field when it’s necessary to do so while also being diverse in how you run the ball. I think that’s what it is. I don’t know how, and maybe this is a different conversation Stefan, but I don’t know how sustainable that is because I think that’s what Oregon is to an extent.
and it can get them in the trouble. Now, I think Ohio State’s this 2024 roster is a little bit deeper and more talented than Oregon’s is to be fair, but it’s why they have to keep working that stuff. And it’s why Ryan Day isn’t ready to just say this, that or the third is even if through two games, Andrew is probably correct. This is what we’ve seen from Ohio State.
Stefan Krajisnik (30:40.238)
Yeah, I agree with Andrew about the fastball aspect of it and not to go too deep into baseball, but when you establish your fastball, that’s when the slider and the curveball and other things like that of start to come into the mix. And what’s key for Ohio State is the fastball is that RPO game, the quick game and letting Will Howard make some easy completions, letting the run game get going. But where I think right now Ohio State’s probably better than Oregon, just because that’s the name we brought up is.
Once that fastball is established, there’s Jeremiah Smith 50 yards down the field. There’s a Mecca across the middle of the field, 30 yards down the field. So Ohio State, when they established that fastball, the reason I think this offense is better than some of the others in the country is they can open it up and go to other options and go to deep threats and things like that a bit better. But when we’re talking fastball, for the sake of the question you were asking, Andrew hit a spot on. It’s whatever, what did you say? Five plus five plus 17 and a half.
Stephen Means (31:14.267)
Yeah, yeah.
Stephen Means (31:37.297)
Andrew (31:38.488)
the line of scrimmage to five yards downfield.
Stefan Krajisnik (31:38.788)
Well, that’s pretty easy.
Stefan Krajisnik (31:43.664)
Yeah, that is correct. Because think about Jeremiah Smith’s touchdown against Western Michigan. That was like, seven yards on the field that he caught it. It was a slam, you know? Not long before that, caught a slam and the safety didn’t slip. And it was like a 10 -yard completion.
Stephen Means (31:58.481)
Yeah, I asked Will about that. I’ll put it aside. And we were, we talked about a few things, but I know for sure that’s an RPO. The first read is to Carnell Tate. Both times they oversold on Carnell Tate. So what is it? Will’s eyes take him next. Jeremiah Smith. And just like you’re saying, Stephane, the first time it’s just what probably is normally going to happen. You get a first down and you keep the play alive. A safety slips. Yeah, that’s fine.
Stefan Krajisnik (32:23.194)
That’s fine.
Stephen Means (32:25.905)
The second time, a safety, nobody did anything genius or otherworldly. The safety fell down and Jeremiah Smith’s faster than anybody on Western Michigan’s roster. So instead of it being another seven yard gain, it’s a 70 yard touchdown.
Stefan Krajisnik (32:39.354)
That’s, that’s important too, that you mentioned that because that play reminded me a little bit of Will Johnson’s interception against Michigan. And it’s Kyle McCord just staring down Marvin Harris, saying, it’s coming. Like Will Howard saying that Cardinal is the first, like Will Howard went to second or third read on that RPO. That’s something Ohio State didn’t have last year.
Stephen Means (32:53.755)
Stephen Means (33:03.281)
And it also plays into what Will Howard’s been saying. I don’t have to be a superhero because there’s number 32 and number one and number two and 17 and 11 and four, they’re superheroes. I just gotta be Alfred and tell them where to go. So that’s what happened there. Will Howard did something very simple. 17 is not open. My next read is four. After I’ve already decided I’m not giving it.
on that read. I’m already deciding, okay, this is a throw. 17 is not open. My next read is four. And then four does the superhero thing. And back at Pooka’s had some moments of being a superhero. Sometimes the refs have gotten in the way of that superhero -ness and taking touchdowns off the board. think Karno Tate had one against Akron where he takes a very simple, I think 12 -yard curl or whatnot and turns it into a 34 -yard touchdown, right? Brandon Ennis, I’m sure, can do stuff. I mean, we’ve seen what Quin -Shawn Judkins can do. And Chip Kelly called
Travion Henderson and explosive play waiting to happen. Like he doesn’t, if he does the simple things to Andrew’s point, simplicity to your point, Stefan, simplicity. If Will Howard does the simple thing, the superheroes can do the complex thing and turn seven yard plays in the 70 yard touchdowns. And that’s what Ohio State’s fastball is right now. Just make the simple right read in every single decision. Now,
to the point we were making about Oregon and we’re bringing up Oregon because that’s the first big game we’re gonna play. And so that’s how we’re, and now as I said on the Tuesday part, we’re in phase two. So that’s where we’re getting to. We’re getting towards the Oregon game.
Stefan Krajisnik (34:40.186)
I think Oregon’s also the only offense on their schedule that’s comparable to Ohio. I don’t think Penn State, mean Michigan obviously, I don’t think Penn State has an offense good enough to keep up with Ohio State.
Stephen Means (34:44.202)
Yeah, in terms of how they go about their past. Yeah.
Stephen Means (34:51.525)
But not even just good, but also just how Oregon kind of goes about some things, right? They do a lot of RPOs and stuff like that as well. But I’m not great at baseball, so I’m going to need both of you to help me out. But I do know who Mariano Rivera is. And I know he was an elite closer. But the reason why he was an elite closer because he had one really, really good pitch. And Oregon is Mariano Rivera. Who is somebody in baseball, Andrew and Stefan, who has like seven pitches they can go to?
Andrew (35:22.222)
That’s a good question.
Stefan Krajisnik (35:23.696)
Corbin Burns.
Stephen Means (35:24.739)
Okay, they’re Corbin Byrds. I don’t even know if Corbin Byrds is good or not, but we’re gonna use him now. What, starting? Okay, I didn’t even know that.
Andrew (35:29.784)
Plays for the Baltimore Orioles, so he’s good. By the way, you know Mariano Rivera, like you know his number one pitch was not a fastball, it was a cutter, right? I know, but I’m just letting you know.
Stephen Means (35:39.265)
That’s not the point. Now you’re putting the semantics. Now you’re just going with semantics. It’s more about the fact that one guy has something that has really, really good. Now he’s really, really good at his job, but there’s a reason why he wasn’t a starting pitcher. Because as a starting pitcher, you do need to have multiple things. You can’t just have one. You have a go -to, yes, but you also have things you can work out off of it. I do know this about baseball, to your point, Stephon. Now that I’ve got my fastball working.
Andrew (35:45.186)
No, I’m just trying to annoy you.
Stephen Means (36:05.922)
I can work in my change up. can work in my curve ball, my two seam, my four seam. I don’t even know those are baseball terms, but I’m rocking with it. I’m rocking with it. Listen, part of life is admitting when you don’t know something. I’m not, I don’t know baseball well enough, but I do know how to play MLB the show.
Stefan Krajisnik (36:18.416)
If Ohio State makes it to Omaha, Stephen will probably not be there for us.
Stephen Means (36:27.099)
Probably not, probably not. But it’s okay. But you see what I’m getting at though in that situation. Ohio State has multiple pitches and right now it’s trying to establish what their foundational pitch is going to be. And it seems like through two games to Andrew’s point, it’s that quick game RPO stuff. But does that evolve over the next four games now that you’ve got Donovan Jackson back into the mix? Will Howard’s got two games under his belt, Quintron Dungeons and Will Cutts.
Kazmeric and Seth McLaughlin are getting more comfortable by the day right Jeremiah Smith has played football for in college now Cardinal Tate’s being establishing himself Brandon. This is establishing himself and on down the list there. How does that continue to evolve? That’s segment one. Go ahead and you’re actually
Andrew (37:11.246)
Well, so if I could add something real quick, I actually don’t think it, I don’t think it matters about anyone other than Will Howard, how this offense evolves. Because I think if, I think if Will Howard becomes this quarterback that can just put it on a like frozen rope to 25 yards down the field, like that out route that I’m talking about, right? Like one of the toughest throws that a quarterback is ever going to have to make. If you throw a 15, 20 yard out route, if he can do that regularly, like if he can cement himself as a first round quarterback,
Stephen Means (37:19.547)
Stephen Means (37:34.576)
Stephen Means (37:39.409)
Changes the game. Yeah. Yeah, that’s fair.
Andrew (37:41.25)
then the offense can change. don’t think you could have a great offensive line. I don’t know how much, you know, a Joe Moore award winning offensive line is going to make this offense change. I don’t know how much Trevon Henderson and Quinn John Judkins definitely looking like those rare first round running backs is going to make this offense change. We already know the receivers are great. I don’t know how much that’s going to make this offense change. I think it only comes down to Will Howard and how his passing ability can evolve and more accurately how his mid downfield.
passing accuracy changes because if it improves and it reaches a level that’s a really high level, then I think Ohio State’s offense is going to evolve. If not, I think we’re kind of in for this the rest of the year.
Stephen Means (38:22.373)
No, that’s a good point. That’s a good point, which plays into why Stefan said that the biggest influence Chip Kelly has had so far is on the quarterback play because you want to see how that continues to evolve as the weeks continue on here. We’re going take a quick break here and then we’re going to look at this from a Ryan Day perspective and the impact that Chip Kelly may have had on Ryan Day as Ohio State’s head coach. And we’ll get into that more when come back from the break.
Rebecca Buckeye talk, Stephen, Andrew, Stefan, we’re talking Chip Kelly, Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and play caller. We spent a lot of that first segment doing things from the standpoint of just the offense in general, right? From quarterbacks, offensive line, run game, philosophy and all those things. But the reason Chip Kelly is here is because Ryan Day recognized it was time to give up play calling. That’s the number one reason why he’s here. He’s also here because the guy Ryan Day originally hired to give up play calling too,
went to go be a head coach in the ACC at ballscouts. So that’s the other reason why he was here. But it’s a bit deeper than obviously the two have a relationship that’s gone back 20, 25 years at this point with Ryan Day playing for him and working for him at different stops along the way. So Stefan, I want to start with you. Actually, no, Andrew, I’ll start with you because you were here again. And that’s with all due respect to Stefan, you were here. So you saw it and you saw the it reach its height of Ryan Day, it’s time to give it up.
Right. And it wasn’t about Ryan Day isn’t good at this. It was about college football is not in a place at this point where Ryan, you should be calling plays at Ohio State. doesn’t. There’s now there’s other head coaches at big time programs who are still calling plays. believe Steve Steve Clark Sarkeez and calling plays at Texas. Lincoln Riley is calling plays at USC. But I’ll say it’s a different beast, man. It’s a different beast. And there’s a lot going on that Ryan Day has to have his hands in. And it just probably logically didn’t make sense for him to be spending.
85 % of his work week during the year putting together an offensive game plan and then having the execute that offensive game plan on Saturdays. So answer the question is this the biggest difference in Ryan Day, the head coach today as we’re recording this pod on Wednesday, September 18th, the people are listening to this on Thursday, September 19th. The biggest difference between him today and where he was 12 months ago. Now that he is no longer calling plays, where have you seen the biggest change?
Stephen Means (40:42.703)
and how Ryan Day goes about things.
Andrew (40:45.644)
haven’t seen it and I don’t think anybody’s seen it. I think the biggest change has happened behind the scenes and that is something that we’re just not ever going to get access to. With all due respect to every reporter that covers Ohio State, nobody’s going to be sitting in film rooms with these guys. Nobody’s going to be sitting in a living room with a recruit with Ryan Day. Those things just don’t happen. So I think that is the biggest difference because Steven, we can point to small differences, I think.
where, you know, against Western Michigan, it’s 35 nothing and Ryan Day looks like he’s about to pop a blood vessel screaming at a referee because he’s upset about a call. You can do that when you’re not calling plays. And I think you asked him actually, if I’m not mistaken, you asked him specifically, like, how has that changed and what you are able to do on the sideline? And he basically admitted like, yeah, like you, I’m able to do that stuff now. I’m able to kind of, you know, work the refs and I’m able to kind of do those things because if I was still calling plays,
I could have been pissed, but then I have to turn around and call the next play. And I have to think about what’s next and what’s next and what’s next. So I think that there are those impacts of things that matter and we can see that and those matter. But the biggest impact to me is him being in a special teams meeting room that, I mean, we don’t get to see it, but we know what’s happening. You know, the special teamers that were, you know, made available for media like a week or two ago.
We’re kind of talking about how much of a boost it is to have Ryan Day kind of being in special teams meetings and sitting in special teams meetings. And I think it’s a boost for that. I think it’s a boost to have Ryan Day kind of bouncing around. We saw this at spring practice where a little bit where he was going to the running backs. I know they didn’t have a running backs coach at the time, but Ryan Day was bouncing around. spent a little bit more time at running backs when, when Tony Alford left, but he was there and he’s moving around to all these other different position groups.
and he’s getting a taste of what his coaching staff is doing. And during the rest of the season, I would have no reason to assume that he’s just standing there staring at the quarterbacks or standing there by himself. I would assume that he’s bouncing around like we saw in spring practice. So the biggest impact to me is not something that we can see for the few hours a week that he is made public and that he is available to me. The biggest impact is, okay, what is he able to do?
Andrew (43:09.644)
when he’s sitting in his office and the doors are closed. Is he able to call more recruits now because he’s not worried about having to put together a game. Hey, what’s our third and three game plan if we’re near midfield? Hey, what’s our offense going to look like if we lose a running back this week because we’re already down and know, Trivion’s battling something like what’s the offense going to look like? How, how am I going to evolve my play calling there? He doesn’t have to worry about any of those hypotheticals anymore. So where is that time being spent?
I think it’s, you know, in terms of recruiting, I think it matters in terms of coaching other position groups. I think it matters. You know, heck, like this is maybe more of an off season thing, but in terms of dealing with just the CEO aspect of all of this stuff, dealing with Ross Bjork, and I don’t want to make that sound like Ross Bjork is someone that’s hard to deal with, but like, like talking to the athletic director about what’s going on and dealing with collectives and all these other different things.
Those matter, we’re not going to get to see those. So I think there has been a noticeable impact. I just don’t think we’re going to see it. And I think it’s going to happen all behind the scenes because of what Ryan Day gave up.
Stephen Means (44:20.689)
Stefan, he did the thing again. He did it again. You haven’t seen it, but also here’s what you’ve seen.
Andrew (44:29.87)
I mean, I don’t know if we’re seeing it yet. That’s my thing. Like, I don’t know if we’ve seen like the tangible boost of like a recruiting like at least I haven’t talked to a recruit has been like, yeah, Ryan Day has been more involved in my recruitment or I have, you know, I don’t know if we’ve seen or heard that yet.
Stephen Means (44:40.753)
Well, no, no. Well, I don’t know, but I wasn’t necessarily, I don’t think it has to be that. And also Ryan Day is already a lot more involved earlier in the process for recruits than most head coaches are. That’s already, that’s a fact that most coaches are closers and Ryan Day is an opener as well. And it’s been, he, he, he taking that approach as part of the reason why.
Andrew (44:54.286)
Sure. Yeah.
Stephen Means (45:05.297)
They’ve had some of the classes they’ve had so far as they’ve decided to take that approach. And maybe you have to do that when you are a head coach for the very first time in a program like this and you’re trying to like show people why Ohio State is still going to be a prominent program where you’re taking over for a legend. But that was a thing back in 19 and 20 and he’s continued to do it now that here we are in 2024. He still approaches things that way where I don’t think there’s a recruit out there that hasn’t had at least one or two conversations with Ryan Day. If you have an offer from Ohio State, that’s part.
It’s part and that’s one of the thing is Andrew you’ve been out there now for the camps I don’t know how much you pay attention to it, but Ryan day comes out there every so often and it’s like a assistant coach will bring a kid up there to like hey Come meet Ryan day. They take a picture with Ryan day and then a couple hours later just got offered by Ohio State, you know 80 AGT TG or whatever the thing is, you know, you know how these recruits do it. I don’t that’s the oldest thing I’ve ever said by the way, you know how these recruits do it Stefan
Stefan Krajisnik (46:03.492)
The old war to God?
Andrew (46:04.418)
Yeah, very kids these days.
Stephen Means (46:06.301)
It wasn’t very kids these kids days thing. All glory got it. A -G -T -G. Stephane, have you noticed it at all where we’ve seen changes in terms of Ryan Day is not necessarily calling plays anymore. And so he’s not neck deep into that conversation anymore.
Stefan Krajisnik (46:23.14)
Yeah, I the, I guess the most like tangible way we’ve seen it has been special teams. All right. The, the, the strides that that unit has taken and the clear effort by Ryan Day to be a part of that. The, the, like the Andrew said, the players acknowledging that it’s a big deal that Ryan Day is a part of that. I think that’s a very tangible way that we’re seeing kind of, kind of this new role for him. another one is like Steven, you and I talked about it, the first game when he came out of the tunnel and instead of.
having to go on the field and go work with the quarterbacks. He took a right behind the sideline and was giving out Buckeye leaves to some kids sitting in the first couple rows. And then, I was there when they did the Archie Griffith and statue unveiling in front of Ohio stadium. And he made an appearance and gave a quick speech before he went back to the offices to keep game planning. it’s like, maybe he would have been there anyways last year because he’s a head coach at Ohio state, but it feels like.
Hey, he was able to step away from meetings and stuff for a little bit to go get this speech at our RG Griffith center of baling. Maybe that has to do with the fact that he’s not having to sit there and come up with, with, here’s what we’re doing on first down. Here’s what we’re doing on second down. Like there’s just little ways that I think we’ve seen him be able to step away from the X’s and O’s and make time for some of this other CEO, I guess is the best word to use. Like the CEO type stuff for him. I think we’re just seeing him be a head coach and that’s very, it’s very NFL of him, right? Like,
And the NFL usually head coaches aren’t calling plays until their job is on the line. And they’re like, okay, like Matt Eberfluss for the Bears last year, suddenly he started calling different plays. Yeah. You were, you were like one in seven, you were about to get canned. You better take over that defense. Right? So it’s like, it’s kind of the, I feel like in college we’d see more where they do call plays early on and then they switch NFL is kind of the inverse. And I think you’re seeing like, everyone talks about Ryan Day as kind of this NFL type coach. And like, is he going to lead for the NFL one day and all this like,
Stephen Means (47:57.827)
Stefan Krajisnik (48:19.044)
he operates that way. And I think Chip to some extent does as well, which kind of helps him too, because Chip has experience in the NFL and things of that nature. So, there, there are small ways that I think we do see it. think Andrew’s right. And kind of the big picture sense of like recruiting and things like that, we might hear about it, but like, we don’t see it, right? We’re not in those meetings with, with the team and things of that nature. So maybe that kind of stuff, we don’t see as much as much as we hear about it. But like, those were some small examples where,
things I saw where I’m just like, if you’re calling plays, you probably don’t have time to do some of this stuff. And I think it goes along like, think given out Buckeye leaves to kids, like it looks like a very like PR ish thing, but like when you’re the head coach and people are kind of getting frustrated, like that stuff goes a long way. Like people notice that type of stuff and it helps you. And when you’re a head coach, not calling plays, you have time to do that.
Stephen Means (49:15.857)
When you’re calling plays, it’s hard to be anything other than calm. You have to get your thoughts together. You have to get your next series of plays ready, your third down calls. You have to communicate while the defense is out there on what just happened to make those corrections. There’s a lot going on during that time. So, so to get too much involved with everything else, it’s not easy. Now I can just be myself and chase around every, and chase everybody around. And I’ve enjoyed doing that. Being with the defense, being with the special teams and barking at everybody. But that’s typically how I am in practice.
It’s just when you’re in a game, it’s a little more difficult to do that. I think we’ve already seen it. I don’t know if it’s going to change the recruiting part of this. Cause again, I just think Ryan Day’s approach to recruiting is already abnormal for what a head coach typically is in recruiting, especially at a head coach in his position at a school of this magnitude. So I don’t know if we’re going to see it there. I think in the off season where we saw it was his visibility, he’s doing a lot of media, quite frankly.
But more importantly his visibility and just like some of the stuff head coaches have to do right be in certain meetings now that NIL exists you’re going to Fundraisers and you know dinners and all this other stuff, but I think in season here’s where I’ve seen it the most and Andrew you mentioned him barking at the ref for three or four plays you see it there you see it in the We got to get guys more plays his how he’s handled certain situations like that fourth down call now
That is the one thing I do want to see in the Michigan game. It’s the thing I want to see against Oregon, right? Cause that’s where it mattered the most was against Michigan. You ran 30 seconds off the clock and tried to kick a field goal instead of being aggressive and go to the store. But here’s where I’ve actually seen it in terms of us and his dealings with us.
Stephen Means (51:01.873)
So back in 2021, when the defense had kind of hit its lowest of points, Ryan Day started talking about his team in a way that a head coach shouldn’t be talking about his team. And I don’t know if people listening to this remember this or not, he was saying, was very, I’m the head coach, but I’m also the head coach of the offense.
You know, Mick Morati is the head coach of strength and conditioning. Mark Mantoni is the head coach of recruiting. We need a head coach of the defense. And that’s how we refer to Jim Knowles when he first hired him. And it’s like, all that stuff is cool and their clue buzzwords, you are the head coach of the program. So when it feels like, your defense isn’t good and your answers are more dismissive and ask the head coach of the defense those questions or ask the special teams head coach of the special teams, those questions, that’s a problem.
because that’s an offensive coordinator masquerading as a head coach. And he’s not that anymore. He is so far from where he was in 2021, where it felt like I can’t do what I need to do offensively if you’re not doing what you need to do defensively. And while that may be true, the head coach of the team doesn’t say that. An offensive coordinator says that. And he was often talking like an offensive coordinator. And some of that is growth, right? This is still only his sixth year ever being a head coach.
And I think all head coaches that are probably like that, right? When they first start being head coaches, you probably can’t ask them about the side of the ball. They’re not used to you. Probably most if you’re a quarterback’s coach, the first thing you ask about quarterbacks and you ask about the offensive, it’s a wide receivers coach who’s now a head coach. He’s always going to know his wide receivers better than everything else, because that’s where he’s comfortable. Right, Andrew and and vice versa on the defensive side of the ball. So it takes some time to get there. But I think Chip Kelly has sped up that process of how much we can ask Ryan Day about
every other position and he knows what he knows it. You can ask him, hey, how’s the Lonnie doing? And he gave a really thorough answer. You can ask him about linebackers and Ryan, they got asked about the defensive tackle depth on Tuesday. We were, you can ask Ryan about defensive tackle depth two years ago. You just say, Larry, that’s, that’s Larry. Ask Larry about that type of stuff. I think for us in terms of how we do our jobs in terms of talking with him on Tuesdays.
Stephen Means (53:22.255)
That’s where it showed up. It feels like he knows his team better a little bit this year. And it’s it’s one because he recruited all these guys. So of course, but it’s also it’s Chip Kelly’s job to worry about second and seventh. It’s Ryan Day’s job to worry about the overarching operation, which frees him up for he’s sitting in his office on Thursday at one thirty in the afternoon and then out of practice. And maybe Lorenzo Styles Jr. wants to pop in. Maybe.
Jalen McLean wants to pop it. He just knows his team a little bit better because he’s not so locked into the coordinating part of this. And I think that matters just as much as arguing with the ref, how he handles recruiting, how he’s handling NIL, just the simple, you’re the CEO, which means you got to know your players. You got to know everybody who’s in your program. And we can, I feel like we can ask him questions that aren’t just pertaining to quarterback play and offensive stuff anymore.
Stefan Krajisnik (54:25.208)
Andrew (54:27.159)
Stephen Means (54:29.529)
Is this still called retweet now that it’s not Twitter? We’re gonna call it retweet. Okay. What was Chip Kelly the perfect hire? I wanna start with you there, Andrew. Ryan Day and Chip Kelly have obviously known each other for decades at this point. And when you take into account that maybe there’s not a person in college football or in football in general that Ryan Day trusts more than Chip Kelly.
Stefan Krajisnik (54:32.656)
three posts, I think.
Andrew (54:32.728)
Repost? Who cares?
Stephen Means (54:58.761)
And this is Ryan Day’s first time giving up play calling. Was Chip Kelly, regardless of how we got there, the perfect hire for Ryan Day to give up play calling to for the first time? And you can include how it looks so far or just the overall concept of Ryan Day gave up something for the first time. Was Chip Kelly the perfect person to do that to?
Andrew (55:23.616)
Yeah, I think so. think Chip Kelly is probably the best hire you could have made, but I don’t want that to sound like there wasn’t other good hires that you could have made. I think they did make one, frankly, before Chip Kelly. And I know we’re going to talk about that a little bit, but, you know, with, with Kelly, I do think the trust was a big factor here because, you know, basically Ryan Day looked at Chip Kelly and
Stephen Means (55:36.475)
Andrew (55:51.266)
handed his child off to daycare, right? Like that’s kind of what happened. And he was like, take care of my baby. Like make sure that everything goes well. Like I’ll be back later today to check. And that’s a nervous time. I’m not a dad, like, I don’t, none of us are dads, but like that’s a nervous time for people in their lives when they have to hand their child over and hand the responsibility over to somebody. And I think that that’s kind of what that was. Like I think people looked at it, you know, that situation is like,
Stephen Means (55:53.957)
Andrew (56:20.226)
God, when is Ryan Day going to give this up? When is Ryan Day going to give this up? And it was a tough thing for him to do. And I think he felt better about it. And I wonder if this going as smoothly as it has gone through the first couple of weeks of the year has maybe kind of opened him up to this possibility. And we’ll talk about this moving forward, but you know, I wonder if this has opened him up to the possibility of maybe I never need to call plays again. Maybe this is something that, you know,
can work. is something that I did. Maybe it’s more than just chip Kelly. Now maybe I can trust more people.
Stephen Means (56:56.667)
Stefan, do you think it was the perfect guy?
Stefan Krajisnik (56:58.624)
Yeah, and I think the analogy Andrew made there was perfect. Obviously Ryan Day cares a lot about offense and trusts himself a ton to call plays on offense and to hand that over is not easy. And I think had he done it to Bill O ‘Brien, we’ll get into this too, but it’s like that was obviously the route initially. His first choice was a very experienced play caller who also has experience in the NFL.
And when that fell through his next choice was an experienced play caller who has experience in the NFL. So there was a clear kind of mold to what Ryan day wanted there. If you’re going to hand it over, you can hand it over to someone whose last job was being OC at a Sunbelt school, right? Like you, you want someone who has a lot of experience at a high level doing it. And if it’s not Bill O ‘Brien and Chip Kelly, think what was the perfect hiring, frankly, you’re looking at it now, I think.
I think Will Howard would have been good in Bill O ‘Brien’s offense, but I think Chip Kelly’s offense suits him a little bit more. And I said it on the pod yesterday, like it seems like Will Howard and Chip Kelly is just the perfect marriage of offensive coordinator and quarterback. And that helps with it. So I think for a lot of reasons that this was the right hire for Ryan Day. And I think it’s panning out in every way we expect that just because the relationship between those two guys.
You don’t really see too often on coaching staffs because eventually one guy branches out and he becomes a head coach and they go their own ways. It’s rare that they branch out and then come back together like this. So for a lot of different reasons, it was the right move and it feels like Chip Kelly was the right guy to step into that role.
Stephen Means (58:32.849)
Perfect hire and it’s because of what you just said. The first hire he made was a very experienced established guy who also has experience in the NFL. And then he replaced him with a guy who’s very experienced and has a long reputation and has experience in NFL. And also I’ve known you for 30 years. So there’s no learning how to work together. There’s no, you know, period of, okay, we’re figuring it out. I know how Chip Kelly operates. We vacationed together. He knows how I operate. He knows my family.
I know his family. Our kids call each other uncle. We know each other. So that’s what makes it perfect. Because the first hire was just really, really good, because it’s just a quality hire. You went out and got someone that you didn’t have any relationship with or anything like that. You just know he’s good at his job. And he was at the Patriots, which were headed nowhere, unlike the last time Bill Brown was with the Patriots. And this time around, you went and got the same description. And also, you have a built -in personal relationship with this guy.
that takes it to another level. And so he’s going to understand any anxieties Ryan Day may have had about giving this up. So any anxieties Ryan Day may have had have been put the rest because Chip Kelly is really good at his job. And he also knows Ryan Day. That’s what makes it perfect is Chip Kelly is the only person in the world who would give Ryan Day that extra layer of fit. I don’t even think Urban Meyer could give that because that’s a professional relationship.
Right, obviously Ryan Day was a GA down in Florida, I believe, when Urban Meyer was down there. So that’s where they got a chance to know each other for the first time. And then obviously Ryan Day was his offensive coordinator for two years. That’s a professional relationship. Kelly and Ryan Day is just as much about personal relationship as it is about professional relationship. And so I think that’s what makes it perfect. Now, if it would have gone wrong, then we would be going, we’ve been down this road with Urban Meyer before hiring his friends.
and it didn’t go well and he kept them around longer than he should have kept them around. But this is working. So them being friends is almost like the cherry on top of everything else. You went there with Bill O ‘Brien, so let’s get into that as well.
Stephen Means (01:00:40.207)
Do we think things would still be running this smoothly if Bill O ‘Brien was here based on what we’ve seen from Boston College so far? Stephane, you first.
Stefan Krajisnik (01:00:47.192)
I think so. think it would have been, I think the offense still would have been good. Maybe it would have been a little bit tougher for Ryan Day to instill trust in the bill the way he has in the chip just because of that personal relationship aspect of it. But I think the offense itself still would have been good. It would be more so the long term that I’d be curious about because Bill O ‘Brien clearly still had intentions of being a head coach. I’m not really sure Chip Kelly does. I think so I think, and I think when we talk about like five year plan,
Maybe it will look a little bit different, but in terms of this year, I think the offense fits better. I think Will Howard fits better with Chip Kelly, but with Bill O ‘Brien, I look at what he’s been doing with Boston College, man. They’re awesome. They’re really fun to watch. Like I think Ohio State’s offense, at least in 2024, would have been just fine with Bill O ‘Brien.
Stephen Means (01:01:33.891)
Andrew, I’m assuming you agree, so I want to ask you this.
We talked about who’s been influenced the most by Chip Kelly being here. We both picked the offensive line, Sifonpa quarterback. Do you think, we haven’t obviously, you haven’t watched every single snap of the Boston College season, because you’re too busy watching every single snap of the Ohio State football season. But listen, we all saw them play for a state and we saw last weekend when Ohio State wasn’t playing, Boston College pushed Missouri to the break and probably should have won that game, right? So we’ve seen enough to get an idea.
Andrew (01:02:05.068)
They hung around.
Stephen Means (01:02:09.167)
Would you do you think your answer would have still been offensive line if Bill O ‘Brien was here?
Andrew (01:02:14.688)
No, I think it would actually probably be quarterback because that’s Bill’s background, right? Bill O ‘Brien, mean, was obviously kind of working with Tom Brady a lot. When he was in New England, that was kind of the thing that really kind of pushed him over the top, right? He was obviously the OC there for a year or two, but he was quarterback’s coach. was wide receivers coach. He was part of that team that was undefeated in the regular season that was so good.
That was kind of his MO, like the passing game. You know, that was kind of his, his like his, his call, I guess you will like for as much as we talk about Chip Kelly kind of being the run game, I think Bill O ‘Brien’s kind of development of quarterbacks was, was notable as well. You know, obviously, know, foot speaking only on the football side of things, they drafted Deshaun Watson and that went pretty well for them again on the football side of things. And like they had.
Deshawn turn into one of the league’s best quarterbacks when he was there. Now in 2020, it went haywire. know, like things kind of went downhill. He made a bad trade with the Under Hopkins, the set and the other. that was where he was at. And all of a sudden he goes to Alabama, you know, and everybody kind of made the joke, the Saban School for Wayward Coaches. And he coaches a Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback. Like he, you know, he coaches an offense that
is one of the better passing offenses in the sport. And then he goes back to the NFL. So, you know, I do think that the quarterback position would have definitely maybe been a bigger focus if Bill O ‘Brien were in Columbus rather than kind of maybe the run game and the uniqueness of Chip Kelly. I do think it would still be going well. I just think there would be maybe a different focus for us right now.
Stephen Means (01:04:08.827)
Which is why I would have said no. Things wouldn’t be running this smoothly. To start off, because I agree with you, Steph. I think Chip Kelly’s style in terms of the play calls he’s had so far just kind of fit what Will Howard is. It maximizes what he is while I think it kind of shies away from what Will Howard isn’t. I don’t know if Bill O ‘Brien’s had a quarterback like Will Howard in his career. Maybe at those Penn State days he maybe had a guy like that, maybe.
But I don’t think so. Hackenberg maybe. Christian Hackenberg is maybe the closest thing in terms of skill set. This isn’t like a talent. It’s more just a skill set of like what they do as quarterbacks. I don’t know if Bill O ‘Brien has that. If Bill O ‘Brien was here in 2022 or 2021 with CJ Charlotte, I would have 60 touchdown passes and 5 ‚000 yards. But that’s because those are the types of offenses we’re talking about. When you’re talking about Tom Brady, that was what it was. They were just racking up the numbers. Now, granted,
Randy Moss was also the wide receiver on those teams. So let’s put that in perspective there. But also Bryce Young at Alabama in 2021, who also had Jameson Williams, but Bryce Young as a pastor that year is why he won the Heisman Trophy. Could he do some things with his legs? Yes, he did some magical things with his legs, but his arm is what got him a Heisman Trophy that year. I don’t know if it would have been a perfect marriage on day one with Will Howard. I think by the time we would have gotten to the Oregon game,
It would have been, but I don’t think Will Howard is as efficient through the first two weeks with Bill O ‘Brien, just based off of the history. Even if I think the ceiling to which he’s going to get to with Chip Kelly is the same ceiling as Bill O ‘Brien. It just wouldn’t have gotten off, I think, to us quicker, but start there. Let’s take our final break here and then let’s, Stephane, you kind of alluded out it, the future of Ohio State’s offense coordinators under Ryan Day, because Ryan Day has given up play calling. And so,
Does he ever decide to take it back or what does this mean for the future of Ohio State in terms of its office here on Buckeye Talk? So we’ve got two questions left. It’s Thursday, Big Piles, Ohio State prepared to play Marshall on Saturday. Stephen, Andrew and Stefan were talking Chip Kelly and really it’s a Chip Kelly conversation, but it’s also a bigger picture conversation about Ryan Day and his hiring practices going forward. That’s what we’re going to focus on here.
Stephen Means (01:06:30.649)
You said it, Stefan. Bill Bryan clearly had a hopes to be a head coach one day and the Boston College job just kind of again, it’s another situation where it synced up perfectly. I think he was already living up there because he was coaching it for the New England Patriots. I think he might be from that area. His family was up there. And so as much as that was a professional decision to take the Boston College job, it was a personal decision as well to take the Boston College job. So perfect storm created a perfect storm. Chip Kelly.
left being a head coach to come be an offensive coordinator. And he said all the things you’d expect the person who left to being a head coach to come be an offensive coordinator would say, I just wanted to be a coach again. You know, I got a chance during bowl practice to just work with the quarterbacks. It just was fun coaching, not having to deal with a lot of the extra head coaching stuff for the reason why Ryan Day can’t call plays anymore. Do we think Chip Kelly still has that itch to coach?
Here’s what I actually said to you guys. How long do we realistically think Chip Kelly is going to be in Columbus as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator? Stefan, I want to start with
Stefan Krajisnik (01:07:37.36)
think more so than him wanting to leave for another job is, I mean, he’s 60 years old, right? So like how much longer does he want to be coaching? Like, is that five years? Is it 10 years? Like that’s part of the conversation. And that’s not to say, mean, Chip looks younger than 60 and he acts younger than 60. So I give him props for that. I wouldn’t be surprised. Yeah. So like, as long as he wants to keep coaching, as long as he doesn’t want to leave, I think
Stephen Means (01:07:57.041)
Yeah, it’s under 35.
Stefan Krajisnik (01:08:06.5)
this job is the perfect fit for him. I don’t think he’s necessarily, you know, sprinting to get out of here. So that’s part one is how long does Chip want to be in this? Cause I think it’s his job as long as he wants it. Number two is whenever they do have to go in a different direction, what do you kind of look for? And it’s this big conversation of like, are there going to be more coaches like Chip Kelly who are like, Hey,
I’m done doing the head coaching stuff and the NIL and the transfer portal. Not that, not that chips not doing any of that, but it’s like, it’s more of a responsibility for Ryan Day than there’s Chip Kelly. Are there going to be more coaches like that? And we’re seeing it with older coaches like Chip Kelly, but like, there going to be younger coaches who like get into head coaching and they’re like, yo, like I don’t have time for this. I don’t want to do this. Like, let me go work at Ohio state as offensive coordinator. I think that’s part of the conversation.
And I think just in general, it’s like how is Ryan Day continuing to build relationships with people throughout college football and finding people who kind of fit what he wants to do. Just because if he has the next five years of Chip Kelly calling plays, doesn’t mean he’s comfortable with just anyone calling his offense. Like Andrew said, that’s still his baby, whether it’s today or five years from now. So he’s going to have to find people that he trusts as well. So I think it’s a combination of a lot of things.
But I think specific to what we’re talking about today with Chip Kelly, I think it’s his job as long as he wants it. As long as he wants to be coaching, as long as he wants to be around. I don’t, I don’t really see him like, unless there was a magnificent job that opened up and they wanted Chip Kelly, like maybe, but like I don’t see him showing much of a desire to leave and go back to head coaching. And I don’t see much of a desire, at least through two games for Ohio State to say, Hey, like we’re wanting to push him out. So I think it’s his job for as long as he wants it right now.
Stephen Means (01:09:57.924)
Andrew (01:09:59.702)
Yeah, I agree with Stefan. I think it’s his job in college for as long as he wants it because it’s hard to think of another scenario where he would maybe be willing to leave. You think about kind of why he left UCLA and the circumstances surrounding that. wasn’t just that Chip Kelly was, hey, I got to get out of coaching. don’t want to do this. UCLA was also kind of undergoing some...
administrative stuff where, yeah, like they, well, I’m not, it’s not even that it’s that they were kind of a mess, but there was also a lot of changing hands and apparently the boosters were, you know, kind of fed up with it. And, and this, it just, it was a situation that was not going to end well. And I think Chip Kelly kind of saw the writing on the wall. And I think, yes, like kind of the recruiting aspect of things and
Stephen Means (01:10:30.181)
They were at dumpster fire. You can say it. They were at dumpster fire.
Andrew (01:10:53.39)
you know, kind of wanting to, to step back and not be that CEO head coach and just kind of coach ball was absolutely part of it. So there was a lot that went into it. so it’s hard to imagine him taking on another head coaching job. And then when you think of like an offensive coordinator job in the sport, like what’s better than what he’s got, right? Like, I’m 95 % rhetorically asking that question, like there, there’s not.
really a scenario that you would view this as being, you Hey, you know, this is a great situation for me, but there’s something else. Like there’s not there. And frankly, like there’s not even like a Nick Saban in the sport right now where it’s like, Hey, I’m going to go coach under Nick Saban because Nick Saban’s great. And I’m going to go learn under Nick Saban, like kind of ironically what Bill O ‘Brien did.
You know, where it’s, can, you know, coach under Nick Saban and kind of learn that and then, and then move out. So I don’t know what there would be in college. I think the interesting scenario here is what happens if an NFL offensive coordinator job opens up, how interested would he be in that? I don’t know. that is something that, you know, we might not know until there’s reports about him interviewing. And then I think we’ll, we’ll, we’ll kind of get an idea there because right now.
It’s hard to see him leaving for another job in college. The NFL thing went so bad with him as a head coach where you go like, man, like I just don’t know if that, if that could work out, you know, like I know, you know, in San Francisco, it wasn’t great. And then in Philly, obviously it just kind of went, you know, from a pretty high point, just downhill for a couple of years. So it’s hard to imagine him being a head coach. It’s to me, the question is, is an NFL offensive coordinator job going to show up? Because if it does,
Then I think we’re having a conversation about maybe Chip Kelly not being here. Steven, I think we had this conversation with Nathan in the spring and I think we all kind of said two to three years. I’m probably going to stick with that. You know, maybe there is something that pops up if things go well enough here in Columbus where the, know, the NFL might come calling and that might be something that he wants to try again, especially like if this team wins a national championship or something, you know, if this team wins a national championship or wins, you know,
Andrew (01:13:13.664)
a bunch of playoff games, makes a couple title games and they beat Michigan and they do all the things that you know they have set out to do I think that makes it easier to leave. So we’ll see there but the college thing to me might be that might just be off the table at this
Stephen Means (01:13:29.315)
I think the NFL might not be a thing at all. I think that that didn’t necessarily go, go well. I’m not sure how much NFL teams are checking for Chip Kelly at this point though. Conspiracy theorists. What if, cause Ryan Day was with Chip Kelly in both Philadelphia and San Francisco. What if he could see the future and just kind of like, you know, tanked all that so Ryan Day could get to Columbus and so he could get to Columbus a decade later. No, I’m totally joking. That’s not what happened at all. They just didn’t do a good job. I’m going to give it two years.
And I think the second year is simply because Ryan Day’s is guy. And so you stick it out a little bit longer unless the perfect scenario shows up. that’s Jeff Hathley was talking like this back in 2019 where it’s like, yeah, I don’t want to go anywhere. And then like the perfect job opened up and it was Boston college. didn’t go well. Boston college has stolen two of Ryan Day’s coordinators in the past five years, but it didn’t.
Jeff Howley didn’t want to leave. It’s just Boston College. At least this is how he talked about it was just the perfect situation for him and his family. So he had to leave. I don’t know if that is out there for Chip Kelly, cause he’s also in a different stage of his career to your point, Stefan. Also Ryan Dace’s guy. maybe he sticks around a little bit more, but I don’t know, man. think there is something too, you just needed a recharge. Cause UCLA wasn’t in a great place. It’s not like he left.
Texas what Texas is right now or he left Alabama. It’s not like Nick Saban Left Alabama to go be the defensive coordinator at Ohio State because he just didn’t want to put up with the head coaching stuff anymore He just wanted to coach ball, right? That’s it. That’s not we left He left something that already was kind of failing to be frank about it UCLA and not just from a football program But the to your point Andrew the entire infrastructure wasn’t great And so that I mean if you’re already thinking I just want to coach ball for a little bit
but also the team I’m coaching right now isn’t pretty good. That’s it. It helps you get out the door a little bit quicker. If a job opens up in January that isn’t like UCLA, and he’s on a short list of candidates, I don’t think I would be shocked by that. But I will give him two years just because Ryan Day is this guy. But other than that, him needing a refresher and then he’s a head coach again in the next two years, I don’t think it’s shocking to me whatsoever. Which leads into the other thing, Stefan, that you brought up there.
Stephen Means (01:15:50.289)
What when slash if they has to make another hire based on his past hiring practices, are you confident he can strike lightning in the bottle again? Here have been Ryan Day’s hires, good and bad at the coordinator level since he became the head coach in 2019. His first offensive coordinator was him. So that’s not even, this is the first offensive. So we’re gonna go to the defensive coordinator side, cause that’s really where we have to talk about this coordinator situation. He hires Jeff Halfley.
Ohio State has one of the best defenses in the country. Jeff Hathley leaves for Boston College. He brings in Kerry Combs, who as a cornerbacks coach was awesome in the 2000s, right? Multiple first round draft picks, great recruiter, high end pig. Everybody’s excited to have Kerry Combs back in the building. I remember it was one of the few times we were in the Woody before. Remember that global pandemic that happened in 2020 happened and Gene Smith walks by and Kerry Combs as electric as he is with his coffee goes, Gene.
I’m back baby. All types of excitement. It looks bad in 2020, but Justin Fields, Garrett Wilson and Grisso Lave are amazing. And apparently Trey Sermon for two weeks is Ezekiel Elliott. So you get to the national championship game. And then in 2020, it just falls off a cliff. In fact, Kerry Combs doesn’t even finish the season as a defensive coordinator. Matt Barnes takes over as a defensive coordinator. So he went from awesome first hire to terrible, terrible hire.
Now he’s brought in Jim Knowles as a guy he didn’t know. He was just a good defensive coordinator and now we see where the defense is a couple of years later. This is Ryan Day’s first time hiring an offensive coordinator and he’s just done an awesome job clearly, but he also knew this guy the same way he knew Jeff Hathley because they worked together in San Francisco. So he didn’t have to go deep into his Rolodex to go find a guy and outside hire, he brought in a guy that he knew.
If he has to go do it again, based on what we have seen with Ryan Day on the defensive side when it comes to coordinators, are you confident that it will not fall off a cliff or it will be a quality offensive coordinator? I won’t go that extreme with it, but are you confident in his ability to hire another coordinator? If he has to go out and do it again, and the perfect possible guy that Chip Kelly is, isn’t out.
Stefan Krajisnik (01:18:09.261)
I think so. think it’s because Ohio state is going to attract a million different options. think, you find someone who he knows as well as Chip Kelly? No, because I don’t think there’s many people in this universe that Ryan Day is tighter with than Chip Kelly. like you look at people that he’s worked with in the past, like I know Dan Mullins name like came up, like, I mean, he’s had a track record as a great offensive coordinator. Like he’s developed guys like Kyle Trask and Dak Prescott and things like that. So like that, that’s kind of the first name that comes to mind now.
Would that happen? I don’t know, but it’s like, that’s the caliber of name that Ryan Day can go after. can go after someone who coached as a head coach in the SEC. And as he showed us, he can go poach head coaches from other places. mean, Kaylin DeBoer winning out a pretty good defensive coordinator who’s the head coach at South Alabama. Like people in the current landscape of college football will leave a group of five head coaching job to be a coordinator. Like that might sound obvious, but like it’s really hard for some people to give up.
like head coaching privileges to go be a coordinator, even at the Alabama’s in the Ohio States. And think you’re seeing it happen more just because of, of the, magnitude of the SEC and the big 10 right now compared to maybe five years ago. So I think Ryan day will have his list of names to choose from. If, if I were to bet on it, I’d probably say, Hey, circle like Massachusetts, like Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, like that area, because, that’s kind of the area that he’s.
Stephen Means (01:19:31.461)
Stefan Krajisnik (01:19:37.508)
Been prone to go out there. think Jeff Halfley’s from from up there as well. Obviously Chip Kelly is Bill. Brian is from that area, so he’s obviously got some trust trust in the Northeast. But but with Ohio State just being what it is in the changing landscape of college football. Every name is on the table outside of like Kailin D ‘Amore and Kirby Smart. I think if Ohio State is looking for a coordinator, you can look at schools like UCLA, Purdue.
like other schools towards the bottom of the Big Ten or bottom of the SEC and say, hey, like, would you rather leave that, you know, struggling head coaching job and come be an offensive coordinator at Ohio State? I think the name, the list of names is going to be endless for when that job comes open again.
Andrew (01:20:24.332)
Yeah. Well, it’s not just college too. Like we’ve seen Alabama do this with, with the NFL, right? You know, who’s to say that, I don’t know, dart throw, Brian Dable gets fired as coach of the giants at the end of this year, at the end of next year and Chip Kelly’s gone. And all of sudden Brian Dable, who by the way, had been the offensive coordinator at Alabama before, has like coached in college before. Who’s to say that he’s not the OC for a year?
Right? Like, like you there, it’s, more than just, you know, the, it’s more than just kind of this, you know, what you did with Chip Kelly, you can, you can go to the NFL ranks. You can go to, you know, the G five ranks. If you’re really that confident in a coach of like, you know, Hey, this is a coach who’s the O or the head coach of, or the OC of, I don’t know, Toledo or, you know,
some great offense down in the sunbelt or something. If you feel great about that, because Ryan Day has this program in a place where the defensive staff is stable, he can maybe, he feels in a good spot where he can maybe help out a little bit if the OC needs it. You know, if the OC kind of needs some help getting off the ground, he can do that because he has that time available. There’s really no limit to where you can go. Head coach, offensive coordinator, NFL, college.
Power 4, G5, you could go wherever you want. You’re Ohio State. I’ve said this before, you’re Ohio State. You can act like it, right? you can, there’s not anybody in this country who’s going to turn around and look at Ohio State and be like, I don’t know, that’s a risky job. Like, I don’t think that there’s any reason why that can’t turn into kind of what the saving thing was, where it was just like, Hey, you know what? Go coach with saving for a year or two, and then get a better job when you’re done. And that might be what happens.
And I think the way that this has gone, can absolutely give you confidence that this can work. And I think it should give Ryan Day confidence that this can work because it has worked. And yes, it’s not going to be Chip Kelly. Yes, it’s not going to be somebody who you know, his like childhood home, you know, it’s not going to be that, but there’s going be a lot of really good candidates. Other guys can coach ball too. And Ohio state’s not going to have any shortage of options if and when Chip Kelly is no longer the offense.

coordinator here.

If this were 2022, I’d say I don’t have a lot of confidence in it based on that track record. But you learn, right? You get older. Again, this is Ryan Day’s sixth year ever being a head coach. And you learn from that. And plus, he just had to do it with Bill O ‘Brien, where he went and got a guy he didn’t know from Adam. And he just went and got a guy who he thought was going to be a lead at the job. So because of that, yeah, I think
You learn from your mistakes and you make better decisions because of that. And because of that, I’m with you guys. I agree that he would be able to do it again if he needed to do it again. And when he’s, cause he’s going to eventually need to do it again. Kelly is not going to be the OC here for 15 years, right? This isn’t Clemson where Venable sticks around until the Oklahoma jobs is open, right? That’s, that’s real lightning in the bottle. The fact that Dabo was able to hold on to his assistants and coordinators for that long, that’s not normal how that’s supposed to work.
And we’ve had that conversation, Andrew, about Ohio State’s assistant coaches and how long they’ve been here. Some of those guys, Larry Johnson, even before Tony Alford left, he had been here for almost a decade. That’s not normal either. We continue to have that conversation every year about Brian Hartline, how long he’ll be here as well. Coordinators sticking around for decades. Not normal. Head coaches sticking around for a decade. That’s normal. Unless you’re Chip Kelly, you only hang around for four years and then you go find a new job, which is kind of the point here. I did want to wrap up this to, to hammer home Andrew’s point of.
If you’re 25 years old, you just say you’re 15 plus 10 and then you’ll get to 25, right? But to the point of the quick game stuff you were talking about, here’s Ohio State’s RPO rates since Ryan Day took over and this is courtesy of Sports Info Solutions. Bill Landis over at Rivals used this in an article he had this morning. In 2019, 13 .9 % of their plays are RPOs. In 2020, that jumped to 17 .4. In 2020, 15 .1. In 2022, 13 .2. In 2023, 13 .7. This season so far, through two games,
24 .8%. So a quarter of their offensive play calls this year have been RPOs and quick game stuff to Andrew’s point. That was a long conversation about Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly, and his impact not only on the Ohio State offense, but on Ryan Day, who is now giving up play calling for the first time in his career at Ohio State and going full CEO, full head coaching mode.
