NEW MYLIUS 76′ FD SAILING YACHT “E VAI” LAUNCHED

  • Antonio Iaria
  • June 20, 2017

Varo E Vai-100

One among the leading Italian brands in the production of big sailing yachts for about 15 years, Mylius Yachts is true to the guidelines adopted by its founders since 2003: top quality construction technology and hi-tech materials ; the concept of performing but never extreme boat; the identification of the target in a passionate owner with little spare time and the consequent need for a “ tailor-made” boat able to meet his needs .

“ E vai ” – that’s the name of the new boat – is part of the Mylius 76′ line which even includes a Deck Saloon version. However, in line with the idea to take shape around the end user’s needs, this boat has very special features. Even though hull waterlines are the same than in the previous model, with thin bow sections and a rather flat development of the hull , the decision to make this 76-footer more performing convinced Mylius engineers to prefer a single deep responsive rudder blade instead of the double one of the previous model. The rudder shaft is made of laminated carbon while the blade consists of carbon fiber sandwich panels .

The section of the deck positioned before the mast completes a simple unencumbered and extraordinary elegant layout , where walkable surfaces are covered with top quality teak. Extremely unencumbered, bow spaces (including the passages to the stern) are perceptually huge and looks like a boundless expanse of teck interrupted only by some dark hatches which let both air and light enter the bow sections.

The owner of “ E Vai” has deeply changed the original interior layout of the yacht. The aft section, for example, houses a double cabin, a retractable bed ad a bathroom on the starboard side. The cabin can accommodate crew members or, if necessary, guests. The galley is on the left side . The large centrally-located dinette , furnished with two large L-shaped counter-posed sofas, immediately precedes the symmetric guest cabins. Both equipped with en-suite bathrooms, they offer the original solution of two twin beds which can move laterally and be converted into a large double bed. Equally original is the owner’s cabin in the bow , with two double beds and a full-beam bathroom. The rear garage is centrally positioned and can accommodate an almost 4-metre-long tender .

76.02 Deck layout

Like the other Mylius yachts, this model, too, has a carbon fiber sandwich hull with an expanded PVC differentiated-density core . Lamination is solid only in some areas  subject to a greater load. In any case, epoxy matrix is vacuum infused and then treated at higher temperatures. The in-house production of the boat , its interiors and systems, ensure to E Vai the maximum usability and top efficiency in every detail .

The carbon mast  is a Hall Spars  one while sails were provided by the Italian company Millenium and include an overall surface of 311 square metres for the mainsail and the jib and 667 square metres for the racing set . Deck equipment was provided by Harken and   Ubi Maior and includes Harken Racing electric winches. The boat is powered by a Yanmar 220hp inboard engine, supported by a Maxpower VIP 250 propeller. The fuel and fresh tanks, with a capacity of 1,000 and 1,200 liter respectively, along with the installation of an air-conditioner system, a water maker and an auxiliary 13 Kw generator suggest the ocean vocation of this new Mylius 76′.

2017 Mylius 76 FD – NOW SOLD

Posted Monday 6th March 2023

e vai yacht

Grabau International is delighted to announce its successful sale of the 2017 Mylius 76 FD ‘E_VAI’.

Built from a carbon-fibre hull and superstructure to an Alberto Simeone design, this 76ft sloop is a true high-performance blue water yacht, achieving the highest CE Category A rating. Her lightweight construction means she displaces just 30 tonnes.

Accommodation is for six guests split between three staterooms, including an owner’s cabin and two convertible twin rooms, all of which are situated in the bow area. Meanwhile, the internal décor was developed by the in-house team.

Her waterline length of 21.5 metres means that she can be entirely owner-operated; however, Mylius Yachts has fitted a compact crew quarters back aft, allowing E Vai to house a crewof up to three people when needed.

As her 76FD model name denotes,  E Vai  is a flush-deck design, which suggests a more sporty purpose, possibly competing in some of the world’s best superyacht regattas. This impression is backed up by the fitment of a single rudder set-up and electric deck winches from Harken.

E Vai ‘s carbon fibre Hall Spars mast can support a total sailplan of 311 square metres and auxiliary power comes from a single 220hp Yanmar 6BY3 diesel engine. Her vital statistics include a 5.85 metre beam and a maximum draught of 4.25 metres.

The Rise of E-Boat Technology

  • By Kim Kavin
  • November 3, 2023

Silent Yacht from above

John Vo knows nil about boats. He says it’s ideal for an e-boat builder. “People ask us what experience we have, and I say, ‘Zip. Nothing. Zero,’” says Vo, whose team at Blue Innovations Group is preparing to launch its first electric boat, the R30, this autumn. “But you can’t use the same people from the same industry to revolutionize themselves.”

Vo, the former head of manufacturing for Tesla, is just one among many minds trying to bring electric-powered boats into widespread production. So many longtime boatbuilders are transitioning from internal-combustion to electric power , and so many other builders are popping up anew, that the president of the American Boat and Yacht Council says his agency’s safety experts are being “bombarded” with requests about technology that’s changing by the day. E-boat prototypes and launches are coming from long-standing marine brands such as Chris-Craft (the Launch 25 GTe) and Four Winns (the H2e) at the same time that newer brands are promising everything from an electric dayboat (the Blue Innovations R30) to a catamaran with world-cruising capability, but without generators or fuel tanks (the Zen50).

And as the boats get bigger than about 30 feet length overall, trying to understand all the different ways they can work becomes even more of a challenge.

Blue Innovations Group R30

“I expect, in the nautical industry, we will have full-electric propulsion, but we can expect hybrid energy,” says Michael Jost, founder of eD-TEC, an electric-propulsion system that will be on the Silent Speed 28 tender at the Cannes Yachting Festival this autumn. “There will be smaller boats that can run fully electric, and the bigger boats will have fully electric propulsion but hybrid energy.”

Before joining the marine community, Jost was a manager at Volkswagen, helping to lead its transition to electric power in vehicles. He says the recreational marine industry today is where automotive was decades ago: filled with ideas and trying to learn what the broader marketplace solutions will be. The difference between automotive and marine, he says, is that with marine, you can go from displacement to gliding to foiling.

That’s right: Foiling technology that lifts boats off the water’s surface is also part of e-boat thinking today—so are wing sails, which most boaters recognize as part of the high-tech builds used for America’s Cup racing. And, of course, there’s ever more ways to install solar power, which can help recharge the banks of batteries that make electric boats go.

eD-QDrive from eD-TEC

Every possible idea is on the table, Jost says, because the way cruising boats have always been built just isn’t efficient enough for the switch to e-power, which includes heavy batteries that weigh boats down. “The boats of today are not true,” Jost says. “If you have a bad boat, you don’t see it. You put more power, more gasoline inside, and then you are happy. But if you go electric, you are not happy because you don’t get the range. The boat has to be much more efficient than an internal-combustion boat—and the boat business does not want to change the hull. That’s why we are looking to support builders working with the hydrodynamic foils.”

Vo says his team at Blue Innovations Group is also trying to think differently about boat design: Forget about the hulls that traditional molds were built to create, and wonder instead about what might be possible from scratch. “In the old days, anybody who came to Tesla with a long automotive resume, we threw it in the trash,” Vo says. “Otherwise, you’ve got these people with a lot of experience, and they can overwhelm you. Instead of building your vision, they will try to assimilate you, and you revolutionize nothing. You just add another mediocre company. It’s difficult but necessary for us not to hire anybody with boat experience until we reach a critical mass and launch the product. At that point, we’d be stupid not to incorporate their experience into our process.”

Zen Yachts Zen50

Then again, brands with marine experience are also trying to lead. At Mercury Marine, vice president of e-solutions Perissa Bailey—who previously was director of technology at Ford Motor Co.—says it’s understood that electric boats are still in the phase of early adopters, with companies trying to figure out exactly what consumers want. One thing they know for sure at Mercury Marine, she says: “They don’t want to compromise the time they spend on the water. In the early electrification days in automotive, there were a lot of questions about range anxiety. It forced consumers to think about how many miles they drive a day and what’s the cost of ownership for an electric vehicle for that many miles. We’re going through that same learning curve in marine. Customers are saying, ‘If my leisure boating activity typically consists of this many hours on the water, I don’t want to compromise that just because I go electric. And if there’s a series of activities I do, if I’m [riding on a PWC] or fishing or whatever I do, I don’t want to compromise those either if I go electric. I don’t want to have to adapt my usage pattern to a technology. I want the technology to adapt to that usage pattern.’”

The trick is that the technological solution for a boater who wants to cruise to dinner and back is likely to be far different from the solution for a boater who wants to cruise off the grid for months, says Julien Melot, CEO and designer at Zen Yachts, which is preparing to launch the Zen50 catamaran. It has solar power, along with a wingsail, with the latter adding the long-distance range that previous models lacked. “The last boat was great for coastal cruising, but I would not have sold it to a family that wants to cross the Pacific. If it gets cloudy or overcast, the laws of physics apply, and you won’t have enough power to escape the storm,” Melot says. “On the Zen50, with the addition of the wingsail, that problem is solved.”

As with some of the other brands in the e-boat space, Zen Yachts is seeing early adopters who don’t necessarily fit the profile of traditional boaters. “Our client base is not experienced sailors,” he says. “They are more attracted by the fact that you are self-reliant. If the world collapses one more time, they know they can take their boat out, and they’ll be fine.”

Silent-Resorts location

And some leaders in this space are already thinking past the boats. They’re focusing instead on where boaters will want to go, as more styles of e-boats take to the water. Silent-Resorts, which is affiliated with the catamaran builder Silent-Yachts, is now creating destinations to harness electric power and make recharging easy for all types of boats, no matter what comes next. The first location, in the Bahamas, is scheduled to finish construction later this year, with build-out starting on the second location, in Fiji, around that same time. “We’re talking with all the builders,” says Victor Barrett, CEO of Silent-Resorts. “We’re setting up in areas where cruising is popular, and we’re setting up the micro grid that connects the marinas, facilities and residences. If you have a house that’s not occupied, all that power is going into the central grid so the boats can plug in, charge fast and go. The boats can feed power into the island as well. We’ll be the first company in multiple locations to have Silent-Marinas ready to accept electric boats.”

All these advancements, of course, are far from inexpensive. The cost of a Blue Innovations Group R30 is about $300,000. The Silent Speed 28, Jost says, is likely to retail for about 500,000 euros (that was about $550,000 at press time). “The batteries are expensive,” Jost says. “You need new software. You have to develop it. And you have to make it lightweight. It might take about five years for the price to come down.” Until then, expect to pay as much as $440,000 to $660,000 for e-boats up to about 30 feet length overall, he adds. “It’s double what you pay for an outboard system, but the scale of combustion comes from the automotive industry, so if that industry loses scale by going electric, you will also lose that scale for the nautical industry on combustion.”

And the people buying e-boats right now often care more about innovation than prices. Melot says four Zen50 catamarans have been sold. The first and third are going to the East and West coasts in the United States; the other two are headed to Europe. Three of the four clients are Tesla shareholders. “Typically, the clients already have an electric car, they already have solar panels on their home, and the next thing they can buy is an electric boat,” he says, adding that for these folks, electric power is the top consideration. “They don’t want to hear about a yacht that has diesel on board.”

Torqeedo’s Deep Blue 100i 2500

Torqeedo’s Deep Blue 100i 2500 is an inboard system that provides 100 kW of continuous power for planing powerboats. It’s made with the same type of lithium batteries that are now found in some cars, but with components that are waterproof and that come with monitoring to guard against short circuits. The company offers a nine-year warranty for boats in private use, with the hope that the long guarantee will help customers feel secure about the type of power. Torqeedo also markets Deep Blue as low-maintenance and emission-free.

Taking Orders Now

Blue Innovations Group is taking reservations for the R30, which is expected to cost about $300,000. Customers who put down $5,000 can get one of the first 100 hulls. For $1,000, customers can be next in line after that. As of this writing, more than 50 reservations were in hand.

For Day Cruising

While some e-boat builders are trying to solve design challenges for long-distance cruising, Blue Innovations Group is starting with a dayboat. The 30-foot R30 will have the capacity to carry 12 people with an estimated run time of eight hours and a top hop of 39 knots.

X Shore 1 drive system

Even Stronger

Swedish e-boat builder X Shore recently announced a partnership with the German company Bosch Engineering to improve the performance and efficiency on the drive system aboard the 21-foot X Shore 1. Bosch’s background is in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, RVs, rail, ships and other industries. This partnership marks Bosch’s first foray into the world of e-boats for leisure use. The goal of the partnership is to share series production experience as well as proven high-performance components from the automotive world.

Floating Solar Concept

The team working on creating Silent-Resorts is talking with government officials in Fiji about deploying a floating ring that collects rainwater and generates solar power as an eco-friendly way to address two of the biggest challenges that hamper island development. Eventually, a similar system may also launch in the Bahamas.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Exes Daisy Kelliher and Gary King Have Explosive Reunion in Season 5 Trailer

Below deck sailing yacht 's daisy kelliher confronts "pr--k" gary king following their failed boatmance in e news' exclusive first look at season five. plus, meet the new yachties..

Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's new season will be anything but smooth sailing.

That's because returning costars Daisy Kelliher and Gary King are anything but friendly after their failed boatmance in E! News' exclusive first look at the Bravo series' fifth season.

Following Daisy, Gary and BDSY alum Colin MacRae 's messy love triangle , Daisy is still reeling from the complicated and dramatic fallout from last season.

"Going into this season, I got rid of some dead weight," the newly single Chief Stew says in the trailer. "The breakup did a number on me last year. I felt very broken. But now, I'm coming back in more focused, full of energy and I'm f--king good at my job. And I'm taking back the reigns."

Despite her initial confidence about returning to the Parsifal III , Daisy adds, "It's gonna be a s--t show."

Cut to the Ireland native yelling at Gary, "Guess what? We have a f--king job to do and I'm not f--king carrying this season on my own, you f--king pr--k!"

But luckily for Daisy, the preview teases her quickly moving on with new Deckhand Keith Allen , who tells Gary, "Daisy would make a very good wife. No?"

As for Gary's response, he bursts out laughing at the crewmember's declaration.

However, Daisy feels the same about Keith and tells him, "You're the kind of person I've never met before."

And when it comes to this season's charter guests, the yachties have too much of a good time with one group on shore.

After a night out, Captain Glenn Shephard warns the team, "You guys went out with some guests, I set some ground rules. Two drinks maximum. You knew the rules, you broke the f--king rules, and now you're here getting upset."

Check out the trailer above for a preview of all the drama to come. And keep reading to meet new yachties Chef Cloyce Martin , Chief Engineer Davide Morosi , Stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren and Deckhand Emma Crouch .

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m.   on Bravo. Episodes will be available to stream next day on Peacock.

Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher

After a distracting love triangle last season that took her focus away from work, Daisy is ready to take the reins back in the interior department with a new sense of energy and determination. However, plans for a stress-free charter season are threatened when her stews question her leadership.

First Mate Gary King

On deck, Gary attempts to keep his team motivated as one crew member struggles to learn the ropes.

Chef Cloyce Martin

In the galley, Chef Cloyce charms the crew and guests but at only 22, he may be too inexperienced to meet the demands of the high-maintenance charter guests.

Rossinavi superyacht EIV exterior

EIV: On board Rossinavi's automotive-inspired 50 metre superyacht

With automotive-inspired design outside and modern, art-studded interiors, the new 50 metre Rossinavi EIV offers both peace and pace

A yacht inspired by a car ? It seems like something of a cliché – until you see EIV in the water. Approaching in the tender, be sure to make a circuit that takes you in front of the bow of this 50-metre tour de force from Rossinavi . From that viewpoint – the one you never want to have of a yacht underway – the impression is strongest: the gleaming stainless-steel grille work at the top of the stem; the outline of the anchors; oversized white bulwarks like a bumper; and that expensive silver paintwork. It all whispers luxury coupé.

“Recalling sophisticated Italian automotive style and featuring captivating design aesthetics, EIV really is like a large coupé: sporty, elegant, performing,” says designer Enrico Gobbi of Venice-based studio Team for Design . “It has a long bonnet and a pulled-back superstructure typical of fast cars.” Which car? I want to know – although I already have a good idea. “The Bentley Continental GT ,” Gobbi confirms. Spot on.

It’s a clever piece of design because it feels instantly recognisable, but there’s no one element that comes directly from the Bentley. It is more a series of insistent suggestions. The automotive theme is strengthened by the sweeping curve of the reverse bow and the aerodynamic slant of the wheelhouse windows, as well as the low-profile sundeck and hint of a rear spoiler in the overhangs of the aft decks.

It is no surprise to learn that EIV (as in E-Four, shorthand for the electrical four-wheel drive system) has been designed for a man – the muscular, aggressive styling makes that clear. Nor that this is his fourth boat. What does surprise is that this is his first custom yacht. On the face of it, this is the boat of an experienced owner who knows exactly what he wants from his yachting life and what features will deliver it. It is not the project of someone who has only owned production boats.

Owner’s representative and project manager Dean Anthony of Florida-based Allied Marine explains the apparent contradiction neatly. “Myself and the owner, we spent three years coming up with his vision. We went through a lot of due diligence, visiting multiple shipyards in Europe.”

The owner himself explains what he wanted from the boat: “My vision for EIV is the culmination of many years of owning several yachts and discovering what I liked and didn’t like about them,” he tells me. “It was to build the ultimate 50-metre yacht by incorporating all of the best features that we saw on 60-metre-plus yachts and from my experience visiting the finest spas throughout the world.”

EIV ’s standout features include the beach club with steam room and a 13°C plunge pool as well as the fold-down balcony doors on either side of the main deck dining area, “which provide me and my guests with an amazing experience and intimate connection to the sea”, says the owner. Oh, and there’s a deep, five-metre-long resistance pool . On the sundeck. This last must-have on the owner’s list caused the greatest headache for Rossinavi in Viareggio. “The shipyard fought us all the way,” Anthony says with a ghost of a laugh. “They didn’t want to do it.” And perhaps it’s hardly surprising. Installing 10 tonnes of water as high as possible above the boat’s centre of gravity presents an obvious stability issue.

“The challenge – it was huge,” says Federico Rossi, chief operating officer of the family-run yard. “We must guarantee the stability when the pool is full. We had to do tank testing, create a lot of structure in the bulwarks under the pool.

“We actually found it was not really a problem for stability,” he continues. “The pool only has to be empty for something like crossing the Atlantic, when the fuel is below 10 per cent and in hurricane-force winds.”

There were other complications, too. The owner wanted a pool that could contain salt or fresh water, as well as an LED-lit waterfall effect tumbling down a glass wall. To keep the water falling the full width of the wall in a sheet, it was necessary to deliver it from numerous jets at the top. This is done via a pipe made of titanium (to resist corrosion) and using two pumps to maintain pressure even if the boat is moving. “A mechanical approach is in our DNA,” explains Rossi with a shrug. “My uncle has been a mechanic for 40 years; thanks to my uncle it is easy.”

He also wanted the pool to remain hidden for the purposes of privacy. “Being a sporty boat, we had the main intent to disguise it well,” says Gobbi. “We achieved this by hiding it behind the side rollbar wings, integrating it perfectly without compromising the external line of the yacht. This feature on the flydeck also needed ingenious technical compromises.”

Gobbi has also – almost miraculously – managed to provide a 10-metre hardtop that doesn’t impinge at all on the boat’s silhouette. It is partly due to the elegant curve of the strut supporting it and partly down to the use of a much darker grey for the exterior of the sundeck, which serves to minimise its scale.

Below the waterline, the boat also presents a low profile – a key part of the brief for this Florida-based owner. The draught has been restricted to 2.3 metres to enable it to nose into the waters around the Bahamas and Biscayne Bay. Twin MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines put a whopping 5,200 horsepower onto the shaft drives – enough for a top speed of 19 knots or a more leisurely 14-knot cruising speed. “It was really important to create a vessel with a shallow draught and a good speed, so it was possible to reach the islands in a few hours,” explains Rossi.

And when you get there, a wealth of tenders and toys help make the most of the trip. The main tender is a 6.3-metre Castoldi driven to 30 knots-plus by a 250-horsepower water jet, which can be easily launched via a clamshell door aft on the port side. There are also two Sea-Doo personal watercraft.

Federico Rossi is particularly proud of the technical spaces on this boat – not so much for their equipment, but for their dimensions. “The complicated approach is to have a really compact technical space, with piping and trunking,” he says. “If you open the ceiling, it’s like an Apple Mac. We can guarantee this result because we take time to design everything on 3D software.” This same software, in fact, allows Rossi to analyse the exact weight distribution in the boat, as every component that goes on board is weighed and mapped.

What that efficient approach means for the interior is space – lots of it. From the four big double guest cabins on the lower deck to the vast owner’s suite on the main deck, dining space for 12 and a cinema saloon on the upper deck. Never mind the opening side platforms that flank the dining table, giving it panoramic sea views – the volumes are generous enough as it is.

Of course, part of that is down to Enrico Gobbi, who has provided a breathtakingly clean, modern design for the interiors. Colours are very muted – natural tones of grey and an off-white “greige”, gleaming stainless steel everywhere and just the merest hint of blue as a connection with the sea. “In all areas, we used some decorative azure pillows from brands like Rubelli, Armani/Casa and Loro Piana,” says Gobbi.

There are other whimsical touches, too. “All guest cabin doors are pieces of art with brass details and leather inserts. Each door also has a brass plate personalised with a name of a famous historical Italian artist. The owner likes Italy a lot,” Gobbi says. The complex effect of backlit onyx appears repeatedly – from under the dining table to the basins in the bathrooms. As with most of the interior fit-out, the yard used expert subcontractors. To get the right distribution of the light, and so you don’t see the supports, you need specialist knowledge,” says Rossi.

Art of all kinds was a big part of this design. There are abstract paintings sourced from artists in Italy, the UK and US, prestigious marble statuettes and carvings designed by Gobbi, and Murano glass. “In the main lobby, for example, there  are two art pieces hand-blown by one of Venice’s most famous glass masters that interprets the head of Modigliani,” says Gobbi. “Unfortunately, by the client’s request, we cannot name the [other] artists.”

The crew spaces have also benefited from maximising the volume available. Perhaps the best example is the impressive galley , which bristles with stainless-steel work tops and appliances. “A professional chef designed the galley,” explains Anthony. “The industry standard is Miele, but we went a step up from that. We wanted to try to emulate the northern European yards – the highest brands – as close as possible the equipment found in one of their galleys.”

The boat also sports capacious wine storage . “There’s a custom 300-bottle wine fridge with thermostatic controls for the different types of wine,” says Anthony. “The four cabinets can be set to different temperatures depending on whether it’s white, red, champagne and so on.” The list of features goes on: there’s a circular lift connecting the three main decks and a plunge pool on the foredeck.

The real marvel is that the whole project came together on time against the backdrop of the pandemic. It took a Herculean effort by all the main players. And perhaps a certain amount of family flexibility, too. “In the Rossi family, everybody knows how to build a boat,” says Federico. “Our strength is that the client can start to speak immediately with the owner of the company, who can provide the technical feedback immediately and move the production in the right direction.” To stretch the car analogy, it is a bit like ringing up the engineer building your Bentley Continental GT and discussing the custom features with them directly. Impressive service.

This feature is taken from the June 2021 issue of BOAT International. EIV is now under new ownership.
