Welcome to the world of Aegeas Yachting, a world of blue and crystal-clear sea sprinkled with a thousand islands. Each island is steeped in history with its own unique and incomparable beauty. My name is Stathis Sofitsis and I am the owner of six sailing yachts. Each one is lovingly maintained and cared for by me, personally. Because of this, I am able to provide them for charter at very competitive prices. Further, I also manage other charter yachts located at different locations all around Greece. Our aim is to simply provide you and your family, friends or colleagues with an unforgettable sailing experience. From our base in Kavala we are able to provide you under agreement with everything you may require to enjoy a complete and stress-free holiday. These can include: 1) Transport straight to our yachts from and to our two airports – Kavala and Thessaliniki 2) All food and beverage supplies 3) Full 24-hour support 4) If required, fully qualified skippers to ensure your crew enjoys our full support. Yachts can be chartered basically from our home port in Kavala (Northern Greece), but also under agreement from Halkidiki, Skiathos (Sporades), Volos, Athens and Lefkas. The yachts are moored in the city of Kavala as their permanent anchorage and there are two airports close by offering many charter flights for your convenience.

Sincerely yours, Stathis Sofitsis

Both Ancient Greek and Ottoman empires have left their mark on Kavala. The Philippi amphitheatre was built close to the modern town in 356 BC by a conquering emperor called Phillip II and is a major draw to those who have an interest in Greek archaeology today.

Close to modern-day Turkey it is inevitable that the Ottoman Empire has left its mark too. A large aqueduct was built by Mehmet Ali in the 19th Century to supply waters to the residents of the modern-day old town of Kavala, Panagia. This is largely intact and is a major feature of Kavala today.

Mehmet Ali was born in Panagia, and in his own honour, he built the Imaret, a theological college that has now been turned into a luxury hotel. This too lies in Panagia, which is a part of Kavala worthy of getting lost in for several hours to explore and enjoy one of the most beautiful towns on the Aegean.

Kavala hasn't always been a holiday resort. It was a major tobacco trading centre for many years and you can explore this history in the Tobacco Museum as well as see warehouses built for such trading in the town.

That said, Kavala isn't just for those who appreciate culture. There are miles of sandy beaches nearby, all well served with amenities and that have coral-blue waters. The nightlife is retrained but enjoyable and you can enjoy some of the best restaurants for miles.

All together this makes Kavala a yacht charter embarkation point and a destination in its own right.

Explore Kavala By Renting A Yacht

A Kavala yacht charter is an opportunity to explore the beautiful Northern Aegean islands and coastline. Just five miles off the coast is the uninhabited, forested island of Fidonisi. 'Snake Island' as it is known locally is very popular among sailors looking for an escape.

Further out to sea is the island of Thassos. Only accessible by sea, Thassos is an island popular among those into hiking with its tough terrain and beautiful forests. Near perfect beaches and seaside tavernas serving local delicacies round this off to be a sailing destination worthy of a couple of days in port.

Beyond Thassos are the Northeastern Aegean Islands, which are closer to Turkey than the Greek mainland. Ottoman culture runs thick in the veins of this Greek region, and you will enjoy the tastes and smells of the orient on major islands like Limnos, Ikaria and Lesvos. Limnos, the closest to Kavala is noted for its volcanic geology, lakes, and of course its excellent food.

Out to the west of Kavala is the Halkidiki Peninsula with its three 'legs'. From east to west the three legs of Athos, Sithonia and Kassandra are progressively more developed. The site of Mount Athos, Athos is the leg where you will mostly find Greek domestic tourists and is known for its natural wonders. Sithonia is birthplace of the famous philosopher Aristotle (in Stageira), while Ancient Olympos is a draw in its own right. Kassandra is like a huge beach resort with hotels, clubs and wonderful sandy beaches.

On a longer trip, you can reach the Sporades islands such as Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos. On a Kavala yacht charter, the choice is yours!

How To Get To Kavala

Kavala Airport (Megas Alexandros)

Around 25km from Kavala itself, Kavala Airport is a busy regional airport with airlines from much of Europe serving it. You can take a bus or taxi to get into the town itself. There are regular flights from Athens if you are travelling from farther afield.

As an alternative, you can fly into Thessaloniki and take a long-distance bus or taxi to Kavala.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Kavala

There are three broad areas you can sail to on a Kavala yacht charter. The Halkidiki Peninsula is generally seen as the easiest sailing thanks to shelter from the Meltemi. You have to deal with the Meltemi more on trips to the Sporades or Northern Aegean islands.

7 days - Halkidiki Peninsula: Over seven days you can explore the three legs of the Chalkidiki Peninsula, taking in the beaches, scenery and ancient relics as you go. There are good marinas and anchorages on the two gulfs and you can use these to explore inland.

7 days - Northern Aegean Islands: Thanks to exposure to the Meltemi on much of the journey, this is a route that is more suited to the more experienced skipper and crew. That said it is a rewarding sail with the opportunity to island-hop to the volcanic island of Limnos, and explore Thassos, Lesvos and Alonnisos.

14 days - Dodecanese and Sporades: This is an opportunity to get to the holiday islands of the Sporades and the Pagesetic Gulf. The Sporades are world-renowned for their beauty and excellent tourism industry. The Pagasetic Gulf with Mount Pelion in the background is famous among Greeks for its mythos but isn't so much frequented by the charter holiday crowd.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Kavala

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. This is ironic as July and August as the Meltemi winds can make for exciting sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for a Kavala yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath.

Sailing Weather In Kavala

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, through these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are well into the 30s some days so make sure you have the suncream packed.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Being the Northern Aegean this has a relatively short sailing season. July and August are the busiest times but in September the weather is still comfortably warm - as are the seas. This would make September during school term time the optimum time to sail out of Kavala.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

This 5 days course introduces the beginner to cruising and teaches personal safety, seamanship and basic helmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew on a yacht. There is no minimum age limitation but minors under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Price: €780 pp / 5 days

RYA Day Skipper course

During that 5 days course you will be taught pilotage, navigation boat handling and seamanship up to the standards required to skipper a cruising yacht mainly by day in non tidal waters. The RYA Day Skipper course will show you the difference between being crew and being the person in charge. The course introduces the problems and responsibilities of being in charge of a yacht and how to cope with common difficulties.  It is the course that most candidates ask for and can be combined with a competent crew level course at the same time. Minimum age to award a certificate is 16.  Price: €780 pp / 5 days

RYA Coastal Skipper practical

The aim of this course is to teach the advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake longer coastal passages by day and night. Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations but concentrates on night cruising and handling heavy weather.

Course Content: Passage planning for longer passages, Preparation for sea, Pilotage, Passage making and ability as skipper, advanced yacht handling under power, advanced yacht handling under sail, tide, adverse weather conditions, night sailing and watchkeeping, emergency situations.

Ability after the course: Able to skipper a yacht on longer coastal passages by day and night.  Price: €900 pp / 5 days

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal – Exam Preparation

The aim of this demanding course is to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. Previous experience of 30 days at sea, 2 of them as a skipper covering 800 miles and at least 12 hours at night are required in order to be accepted in that course. Also a First Aid Certificate, a Short Range Operator’s Certificate and a minimum age of 17 are required to be awarded with that qualification. An independent examiner different from your instructor will test your skills after the course Syllabus. During this course our already experienced candidates will be trained on advanced passage planning by day and night in more demanding areas and weather conditions. They have to learn how to cope with emergencies and conduct the correct crew management. The boat handling under sails or power has to be to very high standards in order to be ready to deal with any circumstances.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Preparation

The Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is internationally recognised throughout the yachting industry. This is a minimum legal requirement for seeking work in the industry. If you want to work in the charter business as a competent and reliable skipper, do long deliveries, or are seeking crew work on mega yachts, then this is the way to improve your skills.

A Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is gained by examination, conducted by RYA Yachtmaster Examiners who are completely independent from our Training Centre. There is no syllabus prescribed for the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. The theory is the equivalent of Yachtmaster Coastal (above). The preparation course is for the very experienced sailors who already hold a SRC radio operator and a First Aid Certificate. Also 2500 miles of seamanship are required half of them in tidal waters on 50 days being at least 5 days as skipper day and night. These requirements are set in order to help you ensure that you can enjoy your preparation for the exams. The exams have a minimum duration of 8-10 hours per candidate and are really a challenge for your skills and seamanship.

Racing Sailing Courses

Join one of our racing courses to become a member of a racing team. Participate in several regattas all over Greece. Courses are run throughout the year, even in winter time. You can choose either a regular course or an intensive one, under agreement at certain dates before a regatta. Our instructors are experts with many awards among the best sailors in Greece. What You need to Know for your Cruise

Going sailing definitely is very different to when you go on holidays ashore, a mix of adventure, luxury, tranquility and excitement which can appeal to one and all!

Sailing trips are different to any other type of holiday for a number of reasons, one of the most important ones is lack of limitless space on board! The other one is that while sailing, you may end up sweating during the daytime, but feel chilly when night falls. With this in mind we present the ideal packing list for your sailing holiday so you will enjoy every moment on board and get the most out of your yachting adventure with Aegean Sea Cruises!

Essentials: Start planning your packing by selecting the right luggage! When you come on board don’t pack excessively. A duffle bag or even a back pack should be more than enough for a week’s sailing. Any hard-cased suitcase is difficult for your skipper to bring it on board and will fill up space in your cabin that you wish you had available for yourself!

For both men & women the necessary clothing you should consider bringing is:

Ladies particulars:  A couple of strap tops, few vest tops, and 5-6 t-shirts will be enough for a week. A pair of denim shorts, a couple of dresses for a night-out and underwear will be the utmost essentials for a lady on a yacht! Sandals since you’re sailing Greece are also a must!

Men particulars:  Guys, this is mostly so you don’t forget the important stuff! So, a couple of jeans or linen trousers along with a couple of shirts will be enough for looking like a yachtie when ashore! Apart from swimsuits, flip-flops, jacket and sunnies, a pair of closed shoes will be fine for when you’re about to go for a stroll & don’t forget your undies & a belt!

  • 2 or more swimsuits - Flip-Flops or Light Summer Shoes definitely for when being around the sea water
  • If you have boat shoes bring them, if not then a pair of sneakers will do the job getting you around in the rough paths of the Greek Islands.
  • A baseball cup will protect you from the hot sun and a pair of sunglasses is essential to keep your eyes protected.
  • 2-3 shorts for the 2-4 Days Cruise should be more than enough and a T-Shirt for each day will do the job for the days we sail.
  • A long-sleeve shirt will help you if you need to cover up from the sun & a light jacket for the nights when the breeze brings temperature down is a must.
  • Toiletries for everyone should be kept to the minimum necessary stuff and any kind of cream, lotion, sun-screen etc

A migrant has died off a Greek island after smugglers ditched 31 people in the sea to avoid patrols

Greek authorities say one migrant has died after smugglers piloting a speedboat from Turkey to an Aegean Sea island forced their passengers into the sea to avoid detection by marine patrols

ATHENS, Greece -- One migrant died after smugglers piloting a speedboat from Turkey to an Aegean Sea island forced their passengers into the sea on Tuesday to avoid detection by marine patrols, Greek authorities said.

The remaining 30 migrants on the vessel were unhurt, a coast guard statement said.

The statement said the incident occurred off the eastern island of Samos, which is close to the Turkish coast. It said the speedboat was detected after the migrants — including eight children — had been forced overboard. It was stopped following a chase in which coast guard fired warning gunshots that caused no injury.

Two Turkish men on the vessel that had been heading back to Turkey were arrested and charged with migrant smuggling and actions that led to the loss of life.

The statement said 27 people managed to swim ashore to Samos. A search and rescue operation later located three migrants alive in the water and the body of a man. Nobody else was reported missing.

Greece is a major entry point for people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia seeking a better life in Europe. Most enter by sea from nearby Turkey, with the help of smuggling gangs that charge thousands of dollars per person for the passage.

Following increased policing of Greece's eastern Aegean waters, smugglers have for months been using high-powered speedboats to try to dodge patrols. This has led to a series of confrontations in which speedboats rammed coast guard vessels, and in one case a migrant was fatally shot as coast guards opened fire on a smuggling boat.

Alternatively, smugglers cram dozens of migrants into sailing yachts that try to circumvent patrols by heading through the central Aegean Sea toward Italy.
