10 Best Sailboat Brands | Life of Sailing

‍ There's no denying that sailors are certainly a passionate bunch. We’re so passionate about our boats that we always try going for the best sailboats. To make it a lot easier for you, here are the best sailboat brands.

Owning a sailboat is an indulgence that many of us only dream about but very few ever have the privilege of sailing the seas in what they can actually call their own.

While there's nothing wrong with renting a sailboat, the honor of owning one is certain what many sailors dream of.

With a perfectly crafted sailboat as company, gliding through the water, waves, and wind brings some sort of unmatched comfort and peace.

Add this to the fact that sailing takes you far away from the daily hustles and bustles that we've become accustomed to in our daily lives and you'll see why the life of sailing is very appealing to the masses.

But without a proper sailboat, all this fun and the good life of sailing are thrown out of the window.

Contrary to the widespread opinion, owning a sailboat isn't beyond anyone's reach. It's something that we can all achieve. But before getting into that, it's important to know some of the best sailboat brands.

The best sailboat brands will make your life as a sailor a lot easier and more fun. The best sailboat brands have, for decades if not centuries, mastered the art of woodworking. They've dedicated their skills and immense amount of their time to designing and manufacturing nothing but the best quality of sailboats in the industry.

So if you've been looking for the best sailboat brands from all over the world, you've come to the right place. We'll discuss the best of the best, something that will give you a perfect getaway from your normal life.

Table of contents

‍ Must-Have Features for Your Sailboat

Before highlighting the best sailboat brands, it would be appropriate to jog your mind a little with some of the features that must be available in your sailboat.

Choosing a sailboat can sometimes be a matter of compromises. In other words, it's sometimes sensible to accept that a sailboat cannot have all the features that you desire.

As such, it's all about going with a sailboat that has the features that matter to you most.

For this reason, let's look at the most basic features that can make the difference in both safety and comfort while improving your sailing experience.

A Safe and Comfortable Sailing Cockpit

You'll most definitely be spending a huge amount of time in the cockpit. Whether you're keeping watch, trimming sails , helming, or just enjoying the scenery, there's no better place to do all these than from the cockpit. That being said, a good cockpit should have the following.

  • Have a good depth for safety reasons and adequate drainage
  • Should give you a quick and easy access to jammers, cleats, and other important parts of the winch system
  • Should have a seat or seats that are about 35 cm high, 50 to 55 cm wide to provide ideal support
  • The seats should be adjustable to offer maximum comfort and allow you to change your position

GPS Chartplotter

Use a GPS Chartplotter once and your sailing will never be the same without it. It not only allows you to map a course but is also a great way of ensuring that your sailboat exactly follows that course. It also gives you constant updates on ocean conditions, weather conditions , and potential hazards such as deadly currents and sandbars.

A GPS Chartplotter is also an important safety device that can help you in some very critical situations while out there on the water.

For instance, it has a man-overboard button that is essentially meant to allow you to receive coordinates of the exact location should someone fall off your boat.

Electric Winch System

This is an amazing addition to any sailboat. It allows you to sheet a jib even in high and strong winds with a simple press of a button. It also gives you the chance of trimming a mainsail easily while still carry out other essential tasks in the sailboat.

An electric winch system can be of great importance, especially if you're short on crew. This is because it can free up some crew members to carry other important tasks. In other words, it can make duties that would otherwise require more crew members a lot easier.

More importantly, an electric winch system can maintain safety even in the roughest of conditions, thereby preventing you and your crew from getting injured. In essence, an electric winch system will make your sailing a lot safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Reverse Osmosis Watermaker

This is a very valuable accessory, especially if you're going on long sea voyages. You can spend days on end without drinking clean and safe water.

As the name suggests, you can use this accessory to turn seawater into purified drinking water. It uses the reverse osmosis method that's essential not only in removing bacteria and parasites from the water but also in turning the water into purified and safe drinking water.

Even though this device is pricey, it's a great way to mitigate the over-reliance on huge water tanks. All you have to do is to ensure that it's properly maintained and you'll have an endless streak of safe drinking water no matter where you are.

Wide and Clutter-free Deck

While the deck is often an overlooked feature of a sailboat, it can be the difference between a great sailing experience and a stressful one. In essence, the deck of a sailboat should be wide enough and clutter-free.

This is significant as it can enable you to quickly access different parts of your sailboat with hindrance or getting tangled. As you can see, this is particularly important in improving safety and reducing stress.

With that in mind, make sure that the deck is organized in such a way that you can have easy access to sails, masts, and winches.

You should, therefore, avoid sailboats with decks that are designed in such a way that you have to climb on top of the cabin just to access these features. Needless to say, this can be quite unstable and very dangerous especially when conditions are rough.

Top 10 largest sailing yachts in the world

The list of the top ten largest sailing yachts in the world is not easily disrupted. In fact, it had remained unchanged since the launch of the 106.7-metre Oceanco Black Pearl in 2018, which swiped the top spot from Lürssen 's 93-metre Eos . For four years, Black Pearl remained the largest yacht in the world until early in 2023 when Oceanco sent a new flagship down the slipway, the mighty 127-metre Koru . Read on to discover our official list of the largest sailing yachts in the world.

1. Koru | 127m

Leading this list is a new entry: Oceanco 's record-breaking 127-metre sailing yacht Koru . Commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Koru has been the subject of much speculation for years but was revealed in all its glory in 2021. Not only is she the largest sailing yacht in the world, she is also the largest superyacht ever to be built in the Netherlands. Her name, Koru, is the Māori word meaning "new beginnings" and she is accompanied by a 75-metre support vessel named Abeona . She was delivered in 2023 and is over 20 metres longer than the former title-holder Black Pearl.

  • Builder: Oceanco
  • Country of build: Netherlands
  • Delivery year: 2023
  • Length Overall: 125.82 m
  • Beam: 16.95 m
  • Gross Tonnage 3493 t

More about this yacht

More stories, 2. black pearl | 106.7m.

Instantly recognisable with her black sails and Dynarig set-up, Black Pearl is the second-largest sailing yacht in the world. Delivered during the same year as 142.81-metre Sailing Yacht A (officially designated as a sail-assisted motor yacht), Black Pearl spent five years in development at Dutch yard Oceanco . Dykstra Naval Architects , Ken Freivokh , Nuvolari Lenard , BMT Nigel Gee and Gerard P Villate all contributed their expertise to this monumental project, which looks set to turn heads the world over for decades to come. She is often compared to Maltese Falcon , the first Dynarig superyacht, but boasts a number of technological advancements. She flies 25 per cent more sail area with hinging spars that fold down to allow her to pass through the Panama Canal, but it is what lies beneath that really counts. Two variable pitch propellers harness kinetic energy while she is under sail, which can run the hotel or recharge the batteries, allowing her to cross oceans without expending a drop of fuel.

  • Delivery year: 2018
  • Length Overall: 106.7 m
  • Gross Tonnage 2700 t

3. Eos | 92.93m

Eos was built in Germany under a cloak of secrecy for her American media and movie mogul Barry Diller. Eos is a three-masted Bermuda rigged schooner and was refitted at Royal Huisman in 2011. After emerging from her refit the yacht caught fire in Norway and had to return to the yard to be repaired.

  • Builder: Lurssen
  • Country of build: Germany
  • Delivery year: 2006
  • Length Overall: 92.93 m
  • Beam: 13.5 m
  • Gross Tonnage 1500 t

4. Athena | 90m

Athena was built by the Royal Huisman in Holland for US software developer Jim Clark. Athena's advanced engineering means that she is able to sail in relatively light airs, while still offering the interior space typically only found on motor yachts. In stronger winds, Athena has been credited as attaining 19 knots under sail. The yacht's three closed decks include a large owner's suite, four guest suites, a saloon and dining room on the main deck and a sky lounge on the upper deck. Her clipper-bow and three-masted schooner sprung from the boards of Pieter Beeldsnijder (exterior styling) and Dykstra Naval Architects (naval architecture).

  • Builder: Royal Huisman
  • Delivery year: 2004
  • Length Overall: 90 m
  • Beam: 12.2 m
  • Gross Tonnage 1103 t

5. Maltese Falcon | 88m

Maltese Falcon  was built for the late American venture capitalist Tom Perkins. The iconic three-masted schooner is the fifth-largest sailing yacht in the world. Maltese Falcon's rig is made up of three unstayed, 'weapons-grade' carbon fibre masts, with a fully computerised sail and rotating mast system. The system has been dubbed a triumph of design, development and engineering and Maltese Falcon has topped an impressive 24 knots under sail. The Ken Freivokh interior is a marriage of industrial chic and high tech. It features leather, glass, wood and steel as well as a modern art collection. The yacht has accommodation for 12 guests and is available for charter.

6. aquijo | 85.9m.

The highly anticipated Aquijo was the result of a collaboration between Vitters and Oceanco. Both Dutch yards worked closely with the owner's representative to create a highly complex, performance-driven sailing machine that became the third largest sailing superyacht when launched. 8. M5 | 78.4m

Built by Vosper Thorneycroft in Southampton, England, M5  was launched as the iconic yacht Mirabella V in 2004. She remains the world’s largest sloop to date. M5 was designed by Ron Holland for American yachtsman Joe Vittoria, who enjoyed sailing her for seven years before she was sold on. The new owner renamed her M5 and she was extended by 3.2 metres in a refit at  Pendennis  before her relaunch in 2013. Her most recent refit , however, in 2019, saw M5 emerge from the sheds with all new paint-work, composite biminis, a reinforced mast and a new bow-thruster.

M5 has a displacement of 780 tonnes (165 tonnes of which is the keel). The carbon fibre mast is an amazing 88.3 metres tall and can carry approximately 3,700 square metres of sail.

9. Badis | 70m

The second largest Perini Navi sailing yacht to date, Badis was built for the multiple superyacht owner Bill Duker and launched in 2016 as Sybaris . Featuring naval architecture and sailplan optimisation by Philippe Briand, this all-aluminium ketch can host up to 12 guests across six cabins. Interiors are by PH Design with a total internal volume of 870GT, while the crew quarters allow for a staff of up to 11. Under power, Badis's twin MTU 16V 2000 M72 diesel engines generate a total of 3,860hp, resulting in a top speed of 17.5 knots and a maximum cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12.5 knots.

  • Country of build: Italy
  • Length Overall: 70 m
  • Beam: 13.24 m

10. Atlantic | 69.3m

Atlantic might have the looks of an old classic but don't be fooled, this modern three-masted schooner was delivered in 2010 to an owner with a penchant for classic sailing yachts. She was built from scratch as a replica of the famous 64.5-metre Townsend & Downey schooner by the same name built in 1903. The sailing yacht made history when she set the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing in 1905 - a record that remained unbroken for nearly 100 years - but she was sadly scrapped in 1982. Inspired by its legacy, owner Ed Kastelein built a replica as a tribute to the record-breaking classic at the Van de Graaf shipyard in the Netherlands. The new Atlantic 's three masts stand 50 metres high and support 1,700 square metres of sails with 36 winches in bronze built specially by Harken.

  • Builder: Van der Graaf
  • Delivery year: 2010
  • Length Overall: 69.31 m
  • Gross Tonnage 268 t

Benefits of a Sailing Yacht

While they may be outnumbered on the water by motor yachts, sailing yachts present a unique showcase of features. If you’re interested in regatta capabilities to stellar eco-friendly performance, a sailing yacht is definitely for you. You just can’t beat the music of the wind in your sails while lounging on your deck.

Here are three benefits of sailing yachts:

  • Eco-friendly.  Hoist the sails, ladies and gentlemen. Your sailing yacht is more eco-friendly than its motor-powered peers.
  • Traditional elegance.  If aesthetics are important to you, sailing yachts feature unrivaled elegance in appearance. These yachts achieve an equilibrium of conventional beauty and modern comforts.
  • Cost-effective . Since your sails will be doing a lot of the work, the fuel costs with your new sailing yacht will be less than that of a motor yacht.

Is a Sailing Yacht Right for You?

If you’re looking for the spirit of adventure and exploration of vibrant destinations, a sailing yacht might be right for you. Sailing yachts offer you the flexibility to enjoy exotic adventures in extraordinary accommodations.

Sailing yachts offer lower-tech construction methods that can be less expensive. Their motion comfort is superb, with smooth hull sections that lend to clean cruising. They also tack easily, with a mix of weight from a homogeneous mass and a pivotable keel.

Hundreds of Sailors Ready to Race in the 60th Edition of Rolex Big Boat Series

yacht sailing boats

One of the best sailboat racing venues in the world, iconic San Francisco Bay, is ready to turn it on for the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series at St. Francis Yacht Club, September 11-15, 2024. The most prestigious regatta on the West Coast drew 71 boats and nearly 700 sailors to the docks of St. Francis Yacht Club, to hear what classes will race for Rolexes and perpetual trophies on Wednesday night, and to start preparing for the first race on Thursday, September 12. With a strong turnout in one design classes and ORC divisions, organizers are thrilled to welcome members and guests to be a part of the action on the water and shoreside.

“Having been involved in this epic West Coast regatta for some four decades, it is my honor and privilege as Commodore to welcome our members and guests to the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series,” said Chris Perkins, 2024 Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club and a past winner of the event. “I wish the best of luck to our competitors who are here to compete in one of the world’s most spectacular racing venues. Sail fast and enjoy our outstanding hospitality.”

yacht sailing boats

Rolex Big Boat Series’ extensive history of champions is a tribute to the depth of talent that graces the event and this year, a solid fleet stacked with talented and tough competition is expected.

“We have 30 J/105s starting again this year, which is great to see, and the ORC fleet is diverse and deep in talent with past winners returning to defend their titles,” says Felix Weidling, Race Director of St. Francis Yacht Club. “We always have our competitors’ best interests in mind and after taking in sailors’ feedback from last year, we continue to improve this important event which is a cornerstone of West Coast sailboat racing.”

Perennial Rolex Big Boat winner in the J/105 class, Ryan Simmons and his well-seasoned team on Blackhawk are eager to see how the competition will play out in the competitive San Francisco-based J/105 fleet. Blackhawk took first in class in 2019, 2021 and 2023, and second in 2022. Simmons does not take for granted that his luck will bear out for another win, although he and his crew are talented enough—and hopeful.

yacht sailing boats

“We’re lucky, we have low turnover on our team—we’ve been sailing together a long time and it’s the big difference,” says Simmons. “Our competitive edge this year will be consistency. In the first two days of the regatta, you can’t lock in the win, but you can definitely take yourself out of contention, so sailing smart the first couple of days is key, but Saturday and Sunday are really where the championship will be won.”

Hot to prevail against Blackhawk is NeNe , owned and skippered by Tim Russell who has played bridesmaid many times, often finishing in the top three. He’s currently leading the local J/105 fleet in the class championship series, making him a serious podium contender.

“A first place on NeNe is alluding me!” says Russell. “You have to take chances and I usually approach every regatta being super conservative. On my starts I’m trying to win one end or the other and let our boat speed take care of itself and minimize mistakes, but in Big Boat you have to gamble.”

Peter Wagner won last year’s ORC-C division on Skeleton Key, the J/111 he’s owned since 2015. Winner of the J/111 North Americans for two years in a row and St. Francis Yacht Club’s Sailor of the Year in 2023, Wagner is a tough act to follow. He’s been racing Rolex Big Boat Series for almost 25 years and is looking forward to the solid competition, great conditions and fun social gatherings.

“It’s always one of the highlights of our season and certainly the highlight of racing on San Francisco Bay,” says Wagner. “In this particular event we’ve raced in various one design classes as well as ORR and now ORC and we’re really excited about the momentum around ORC. I think it will be a really competitive event. Some of the best, most reliable and most fun sailing conditions in the world are this time of year at this venue, the race management is second to none and the social side is always spectacular. There is always a great group of sailors that convenes around RBBS.”

Other boats returning to defend their 2023 titles include the J/88 Pelagia owned and skippered by Christos Karamanolis, Cape 31 M2 owned and skippered by Marc McMorris, and J/109 Reverie, owned and skippered by John Arens. TROPHIES & ROLEXES

At the Competitors’ Briefing on Wednesday, September 11, at 1600, St. Francis Yacht Club announced which classes will be racing for the six perpetual trophies and two Rolex timepieces.

J/105

As the largest one-design fleet this year, the J/105s will compete for StFYC’s Commodore’s Cup. The top J/105 skipper will also receive a Rolex timepiece.

ORC-A

The St. Francis Perpetual Trophy, which was anonymously donated to StFYC in 1966 to encourage competition between large offshore racing yachts, will be presented to the winner of the ORC-A fleet.

ORC-B

The ORC-B division will be racing for the City of San Francisco Perpetual Trophy, which has been contested since 1968 and features one of the original spades from the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. The winner of this division will also take home a coveted Rolex timepiece.

ORC-C

The Atlantic Perpetual Trophy, featuring a ship’s bell from the 1905 Transatlantic-record-breaking schooner Atlantic, will go to the winner of the ORC-C fleet.

EXPRESS 37

The Express 37s will race for the Keefe-Kilborn Perpetual Trophy, established in 1976 to honor the memory of late StFYC members Harold Keefe and Ray Kilborn,

The Richard Rheem Perpetual Trophy, named for longtime StFYC member and skipper of Morning Star—the yacht that proudly broke the Transpac course record in 1949 and 1953—will go to the winner of the J/88 class. The PCYA Jesse L. Carr Perpetual Captain and Crew Trophy will go to the winner of the top J/88 finisher.

CLASSICS

The Classics will compete for the Classic Cup Perpetual Trophy.

ADDITIONAL AWARDS

All three ORC divisions will also be contesting the West Coast Championship.

The Storm Trysail Team Trophy to the three-boat team who have entered and achieved the best score. The team must be comprised of one boat racing in an ORC class, one from a one-design class, and one from any other class.

“I’m excited to lead the Rolex Big Boat Series in its 60th anniversary year,” says Susan Ruhne, who chairs the regatta and is the 2024 Rear Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club. “The event is such an important part of the StFYC’s history and a favorite for so many sailors and spectators to experience. There is nothing like watching 70-plus boats on three race courses duke it out on San Francisco Bay, including the classic downwind run from the Golden Gate Bridge back to the club. I am also very proud that we continue to maintain Rolex Big Boat Series’ status as a Clean Regatta, a foundation of the event.”

The 2024 Rolex Big Boat Series is targeting Platinum Level Clean Regatta status, the highest distinction from Sailors for the Sea. A pre-regatta volunteer event with the Parks Conservancy was held at Crissy Field on Wednesday morning. Organizers have taken efforts to remove all single-use plastic from the event, and competitors spectators are invited to meet local non-profits who serve as Sustainability Partners for the event. Sail to Shelter will be collecting old sails on site to recycle into shelter for humanitarian aid.

Quantum Sails will be hosting Daily Weather Briefings every race day at 0730. All sailors are invited to tune in for the forecast from experts at Sailflow Weather and to hear local knowledge about San Francisco Bay conditions and currents.

Racing is set to begin tomorrow, September 12, at 1100 local time for most classes and 1300 for the Classics.

Smoothing the cruising – a buyers guide to ‘shock-absorbing’ boat gear and more!

  • Jake Kavanagh
  • September 12, 2024

Former Motor Boat Monthly editor Jake Kavanagh explains the innovative gear available to help boaters cruise more comfortably and avoid the accumulative effects of shocks and impacts when using small vessels at high speed or in rough seas

Hydrofoiling motor cruising boat from the UAE-based manufacturer Enata

If you can’t run to buying a set of hydrofoils, as seen on this striking boat from the UAE-based manufacturer Enata, there are plenty of more affordable alternatives

The ability to soften that slamming motion of a fast boat at sea has been greatly helped with more advanced and compact designs of shock-absorbing seating, self-adjusting trim tabs and internal/external stabilisers.

Costs are tumbling as equipment is being adapted from the burgeoning robotics, aerospace, and drone sectors, allowing boat owners to leave much of the ride control to fast-acting computers.

Even when mitigated, the constant movement of a boat in a seaway still requires the crew to brace themselves as their body accelerates and decelerates with each wave.

This bracing is very tiring, which is why the offshore industry is increasingly using foiling vessels to transfer crew to rigs and windfarms. The teams arrive fresh and alert, rather than tired and maybe a little seasick .

The more the boat can be made to glide through (or above) the waves rather than bounce across them, the more enjoyable high-speed boating will be.

Here is some of the equipment to help make the ride smoother, and which is relatively easy to retro fit.

Suspension ‘shock-absorbing’ seating

Suspension seating for leisure craft falls comes in two main types; ‘pedestal only,’ or a fully-fitted seat.

Scandinavian 4S unit, a simple shock-loaded platform to add suspension comfort to boats

Suspension seating can start with a simple shock-loaded platform, as demonstrated with this Scandinavian 4S unit. You would simply bolt your favourite helm seat on top and secure the platform firmly to the cockpit sole

Fully assembled and ergonomic suspension seat for boats, from US maker Shoxs, model 5005

At the other end of the scale is the fully assembled and ergonomic seat, complete with full adjustment. This one is from US maker Shoxs, model 5005, and is intended for high-speed RIBs. Note the handlebars for passengers

Pedestal only

The ‘pedestal only’ concept allows an owner to attach an existing seat to a new platform, one contains a spring or gas filled shock absorber. There is a wide range of types and designs, some pre-set, some adjustable, and some able to swivel and lock.

The travel is usually between 6-8 inches, the amount of range needed to soften each landing without providing excessive movement for the passenger. Footrests can be added which can be adjusted to the passenger’s height.

Prices for a basic sprung pedestal can start at around £100, with fitting relatively straight forward. Sometimes this is just a straight swap of the base unit into existing holes in the deck and seat base.

Fully fitted seats

The second category is the fully fitted seat. Ergonomically padded upholstery is set into a frame that has springs or pistons installed to offer a far greater degree of comfort.

The designs include ‘Bucket’ ‘Jockey’ – a saddle arrangement for rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) – and ‘Trooper,’ but with variations on each theme. Originally the preserve of the professionals, for whom a rough sea was part of the job, this type of seating is now more widely available.

Costs have also come down due to more efficient manufacturing methods, more compact designs of mechanism, and a growing market, especially amongst US-based sports fishermen.

Some more enterprising PBO readers may be tempted to adapt the suspension seats from the likes of tractors, bulldozers and other off-road vehicles, and whilst this can prove successful in the short term, the non-marine materials involved can corrode quickly in salty air .

Buying a proper marine version tends to give a better return on investment, whilst also greatly increasing the enjoyment of high-speed or rough water boating.

Interceptors

Zipwake’s E Series powerboat interceptors for trim control

Interceptors stab a small blade into the water and are very effective for trim control with no real loss of performance. They are supplied as a complete bolt-on unit, and only require thru-hull holes for a data cable and a power supply. This is Zipwake’s E Series

Interceptors are guillotine-like blades that stab down into the wake at the transom and prove remarkably effective at levelling the boat by reducing pitch, roll and yaw.

They can be provided as a boat-specific kit to fit the design of most transoms, but the real advantage is that they can self-adjust incredibly quickly. This smooths out the ride with speed and precision, at a rate way beyond the abilities of a human pilot.

This responsiveness, often involving dozens of adjustments per second, is due to the latest inertial sensor technology and powerful electric actuators.

Basically, in ‘auto’ mode the ‘brain’ will analyse data from a series of real-time sensors and then work the blades in rapid sequence to keep the boat running at its optimal angle .

Several companies are offering these units, but the leaders are Zipwake, Humphree and Seakeeper, the latter with its own take on the concept.

Gyro stabilisers

Gyro stabiliser compact unit for powerboats from US-based Seakeeper

Gyro stabilisers have become increasingly compact. This unit from US-based Seakeeper and is designed for a boat of between 21-25ft.

Once again, the compact nature of the modern electric motor has allowed for marine gyro stabilisers to become remarkably efficient.

A large metal flywheel is spun – sometimes in a vacuum – at up to 15,000 rpm, and then reacts to any movement with immediate effect.

The gyro wants to stay upright, so as the boat moves beneath it, the gyro applies a powerful force in the opposite direction.

The result is to virtually eliminate rolling, converting it to more comfortable bobbing motion instead.

Gyros can be mounted almost anywhere on board, preferably along the centreline, and only require a standard 12VDC supply.

Larger models are often liquid cooled, whilst smaller ones are air cooled. The bad news is the price, starting at around £20,000.

…or ‘flapping fins’ for roll reduction at anchor

Stabiliser fins are also now more common on smaller powerboats, with self-contained motors and carefully designed blades.

Leaders in supplying the smaller cruisers are the Italian OEM CMC Marine, and the Swedish manufacturer Sleipner.

A very exciting development, due to be launched at the METS trade show in November this year, is the All-In-One from the Dutch specialist DMS.

This allows a set of fins to act as both trim tabs, high-speed stabilisers, or ‘zero-speed’ flapping foils to reduce rolling when at anchor.

Fins are still usually only found on boats upwards of 45ft but are also very effective at anchor.

As a guide to what is available, we have alphabetically listed some of the main manufacturers and the type of product they can provide.

Some have some great videos on their websites to show exactly how the forces are mitigated, greatly improving your enjoyment, and endurance, at sea.

After migrant boat tragedy, Senegal's president vows sanctions against people smugglers

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal promised severe sanctions against people smugglers during his visit on Wednesday to the town of Mbour, the departure point of a boat that capsized on Sunday, killing at least 37 people

DAKAR, Senegal -- President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal promised severe sanctions against people smugglers during his visit on Wednesday to the town of Mbour, the departure point of a boat that capsized on Sunday, killing at least 37 people.

“We will relentlessly track down and punish with the greatest severity the actors who organize these convoys of death,” Faye said.

Mbour, a coastal city in Senegal nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the capital Dakar, is one of many places from which young Senegalese people embark on a treacherous journey to Europe, trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean in pirogues, artisanal fishing boats.

One of these boats heading to Europe left Mbour on Sunday afternoon before capsizing a few miles (kilometers) off the coast.

There were 89 people on board, Faye said, and at least 37 died. Only three survivors have been found so far.

“Your life is of inestimable value," Faye told Mbour's residents on Wednesday. “You have a central role to play in the future of our country. We are determined to offer you real and dignified opportunities, here, at home, so that this sea never again becomes a cemetery for our children.”

The French Navy is continuing to search for other bodies, and the captain and owner of the pirogue was arrested after he turned himself in on Monday.

In recent years, the number of migrants leaving West Africa through Senegal has surged with many fleeing conflict, poverty and a lack of jobs. Most head to the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of West Africa, which is used as a stepping stone to continental Europe.

Last month, the Senegalese army said it had arrested 453 migrants and “members of smuggling networks” as part of a 12-day operation patrolling the coastline. More than half of those arrested were Senegalese nationals, the army said.

In July, a boat carrying 300 migrants, mostly from Gambia and Senegal, capsized off Mauritania . More than a dozen died and at least 150 others went missing.

The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is one of the deadliest in the world . While there is no accurate death toll because of the lack of information on departures from West Africa, the Spanish migrant rights group Walking Borders estimates the victims are in the thousands this year alone.

Migrant vessels that get lost or run into problems often vanish in the Atlantic, with some drifting across the ocean for months until they are found in the Caribbean and Latin America carrying only human remains.

TESTIMONIAL

“ highly highly recommend “.

The price and service of Gili Gili is amazing! We left and arrived bang on time. The boat was clean and tidy. We were offered water and a snack. There was a safety video and live vests onboard. The staff were so helpful and kind. The ride itself was smooth (we fell asleep instantly).

“ Did what is said on the tin “

Did exactly what is on the tin. Staff were very helpful and boat ride relatively comfortable. Staff member was informative at the start and even gave us a cold towel and biscuit. Really important to book your transfer to your hotel through the company. Don’t leave it to chance

“ Ignore the ridiculous reviews and go with this company for an easy and well priced crossing “

I have to say I’m super confused by all of the awful reviews. The service provided by the fast boat was better than a train back home in the UK. Easy check in baggage taken to the boat for you. Drink and anti sea sickness tablets provided. The crossing was super smooth today so I got lucky but honestly the reviews smack of xenophobic fear that everything is gonna kill you. Try doing the cook straight in new Zealand on a humongous ferry where you can barely stand up at times. 10 out of 10. Awesome service and 40 percent off in march

“Great gili gili experience!”

The giligili crew were so helpful and friendly and made sure we would make our flight on time. They made us laugh and gave us plenty of snacks and water. Angus was especially kind. Would recommend this company to everyone!

“Really good”

We had arranged transfers with our ferry all through GiliGili, were picked up on time at our hotel and got us to the port quickly. The office processed everyone quickly then onto the port. There are multiple ferries leaving at similar times so it does get busy but we didn’t think it was too bad. Once on the ferry the staff were pleasant and helpful, handed out water and a snack and offered sickness tablets if required, also the ferry wasn’t overcrowded. The sea is rough and I can’t imagine it would ever be a smooth ride, but we felt safe enough. We were getting off at Gili Trawangan and again the port was busy but expected. Our return ferry was much the same, it is very confusing back at Padangbai port though, and we thought we were following a rep but we think this was just a taxi rep and they talked us out of our pre-paid transfer saying it would take 4-5 hours whereas a taxi would take 2. I don’t know if this was true. All in all, I’m pleased I went with GiliGili and did my research as I’ve seen others having to stand the whole journey but my suggestion would be that the instructions could be clearer upon return.

“The best ride from Gili to Bali!!!!”

Take this one if you are traveling to or from Gili. I took Semaya One on the way to Gili and Gili Gili Fastboat on the way back to Bali, and it was a totally different experience. Gili Gili Fastboat is much much much better. Clean inside, safety measures (life jackets, life rafts) are there with instructions, air conditioned, departs on time, has waiting room and much organized with your luggage as well. They even give snacks on-board…

“Perfect trip”

I’ve travelled with the cheaper fastboats earlier, after those giligili fastboat was a luxury trip. Departure from padangbai at 8.30 was smooth, no delays, waiting in lines or other hassle. I recommend taking the morning departures, those are more reliable to leabe on time. And the weather is also better, so i have heard. Also you don’t have to jump in the sand when leaving from padangbai. And the AC worked on the boat!

“smooth journey”

i had heard many horror stories about to boats from bali to gili t so was very anxious. the giligili boat exceeded all my expectations! a clean and new boat with aircon, provided a small water and snack and even a damp face cloth. a smooth journey all round
