What qualifications do you need to get a delivery job?
Many delivery skippers operate on a freelance basis but there are also delivery companies that coordinate deliveries and use a pool of regular skippers and crew. The arrangements concerning payment for deliveries to either skipper or crew will vary greatly from one company or delivery to the next so it is always best to ensure you are clear on what has been agreed prior to committing to anything.
The delivery of a private yacht by a paid or unpaid delivery skipper and crew is not of itself commercial use of the yacht. However, if there are paying passengers on board then the voyage is indeed classified as commercial in which case the vessel, skipper and crew will need to comply with any relevant commercial codes of practice and manning requirements relevant to the flag state under which the vessel is registered.
In the case of commercial passages under the UK codes of practice, the vessel will need to be coded and the skipper will also require a commercial endorsement on their Certificate of Competence. If the yacht is already coded and the only people on board are the delivery skipper and crew then it is likely that the voyage will still be treated as commercial.
The qualifications required to skipper a delivery will depend on where the delivery will take place and also the nature of the passage. However, the skipper will owe a duty of care to the owner of the yacht and, as such, even for non-commercial passages, as a minimum it is recommended that the skipper holds the RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore Certificate of Competence and should also have a significant amount of experience on vessels of a similar style and size to that being delivered. For longer passages and transocean deliveries, it is strongly recommended that the skipper holds the RYA Yachtmaster™ Ocean Certificate of Competence. The higher your qualification and greater your experience the more appealing you will be to a potential delivery company.
Delivery skippers and companies will often require crew. This is a great way to get some extra miles and experience under your belt. First Mates are genrally paid, but for deck crew more often than not you only expect to be reimbursed for your travel costs rather than receiving payment for the delivery. The RYA provides a range of courses across many subjects that will assist in preparing you well for a role as a delivery crew member. Experience gained on a passage is invaluable and coupled with some quality training will see you grow in confidence in your boating abilities. You can find opportunities for delivery skippers and crew here on Crewseekers in our Sailing Opportunities section.

We have a need for commercially indorsed skippers and experienced crew. Call or email for details, pay etc.
We pride ourselves in our professional approach to yacht deliveries. Our professional skippers strive to complete the safe and efficient delivery of every yacht we handle and every single boat we deliver is handled with kid gloves. Our Captains are all licensed by the USCG and are familiar with most systems found on board today.
PYD will never "push the vessel" or rush a delivery unless absolutely necessary for the safety of the crew and the vessel. If heading out to sea is the prudent decision to avoid dangerous weather or coast lines, we will do so. If ducking into a protected harbor to ride out a storm is the right thing to do, we will do that as well. We are professional sailors with lots of experience and will always put the care and safety of your pride and joy as our highest priority.
Whether you want your vessel delivered down the coast or across an ocean, PYD will provide you the same professional care, reliability, and safety in every delivery made.
We currently have Skippers and crew that are familiar with the US East Coast, Bahamas, Caribbean, US West Coast, Mexico, Panama, Central America and Canada's West Coast to Alaska as well as Indonesia. We can also deliver trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific. We keep in touch with skippers and crews from all parts of the world so if we don't have a knowledgeable skipper for the areas in which you wish to sail, we can usually find one that is reputable, knowledgeable and trustworthy for you.
Our captains have a USCG 100T Master's license or better. They also have more than 20 years of experience overall and at least five years experience in the waters of the related delivery. They are honest and prudent sailors that will never take unnecessary risks with your boat.
Our delivery fees and associated costs are not the lowest in this business, but they are certainly competitive for what you get. We are completely transparent and upfront with all our fees and estimated costs. A written estimate will be provided before you make a commitment to use our services.
Our delivery skippers and crews all have a solid knowledge of the local waters they will be sailing in. They are also up to date with all foreign customs, laws and regulations of the local countries and ports of call.
Every delivery begins with an estimate of the delivery. We will send you a questionnaire that will help us develop the estimate. If the estimate is accepted, we will provide a sailing contract and a quote for our fees along with payment terms.
The next step is an inspection of your vessel. We do charge for this service but will wave this fee if you have a current USCG Inspection Certificate. Nevertheless, we need to be confident that the vessel is capable of making the journey at hand as well as familiarize ourselves with the vessel and its equipment. We may make a recommendation to repair certain items or remedy certain deficiencies. An estimate of this work will also be provided if necessary and, if approved, performed before departure.
Once we are comfortable that the vessel seaworthy and safe to sail, we will provide a final sailing plan with our predictions of weather and contingencies. While underway, if something breaks, we will attempt to repair it ourselves. If necessary, we may have to pull into an appropriate port and hire the necessary work. This will also be done with the owners full approval.
We will make every attempt to reduce stress on your boat by avoiding bad weather, holing up or even heaving to. If the seas are rough we slow down so the vessel doesn't pound (we like to sleep, too!) We are never in a hurry with our deliveries unless the weather forces us do so.
On arrival, we will make all the necessary reports to the local officials and clear the vessel for sailing in the local waters. We will also perform a thorough wash down of the exterior and clean the interior leaving the vessel in as good a condition as possible.
A pregnant woman and six children were among 12 people who died after their boat sank trying to cross the English Channel.
The French coastguard confirmed the deaths after up to 65 people were rescued off the coast of Cap Gris-Nez on Tuesday.
The local prosecutor’s office said 10 females and two males were killed in the incident, according to the BBC .
French interior minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that dozens of people had been crammed in a boat less than seven metres long.
“I came to Boulogne-sur-Mer to meet and thank the emergency services, the police and the sailors who were able to save 51 people from drowning by intervening very quickly and very courageously,” he said.
Mr Darmanin described it as a “terrible shipwreck”, adding: “The provisional toll stands at 12 dead, two missing and several injured.
Je suis venu à Boulogne-sur-Mer rencontrer et remercier les secours, les forces de l’ordre et les marins qui ont pu sauver 51 personnes de la noyade en intervenant très vite et très courageusement. “All government services are mobilised to find the missing and take care of the victims.”
UK home secretary Yvette Cooper branded the incident “horrifying and deeply tragic” as she said “vital” efforts to dismantle “dangerous and criminal smuggler gangs” and to boost border security “must proceed apace”.
Mr Darmanin said most of the people on the boat were believed to have been from Eritrea, and most of the victims were women.
Speaking to reporters at Boulogne-sur-Mer, where the casualties are being treated, he said as many as 75 people can be put on boats ahead of a crossing attempt.
“These boats go down very, very quickly, this is the reason why a lot of people get killed on these journeys,” he said, according to a BBC News translation.
Olivier Barbarin, the mayor of Le Portel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, said that the bottom of the boat “ripped open”.
All of the people on board the dinghy ended up in the water, many of whom were not wearing life jackets, and several of the migrants needed emergency medical care, according to the French coastguard.
Ms Cooper said she was in touch with Mr Darmanin and was being kept updated on the situation, adding: “Our hearts go out to the loved ones of all those who have lost their lives, and all those who have been seriously injured.”
The latest casualties mean more than 30 people have died in Channel crossings so far this year.
Before Tuesday, the French coastguard had recorded at least 19 Channel crossing deaths in 2024, including nine since the start of July. Last year, 12 migrants were thought to have died or were recorded as missing.
The International Organisation for Migration, which records Channel crossing deaths as part of its Missing Migrant Project, estimates 226 people including 35 children are missing or have died after attempting the crossing as of January this year.
Ministers have raised fears about people smugglers cramming more and more migrants onto increasingly poor boats to risk the crossing.
Last month in its annual assessment of crime threats to Britain, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said the dangerous journeys were a “persistent and high-volume threat” and the number of people attempting the crossing – coupled with people-smuggler tactics which see migrants “wading out to boats or transferring from taxi boats” – had “increased the likelihood of fatalities”.
Charities and campaigners reiterated calls for urgent changes to curb Channel crossings as they lamented the latest loss of life at sea.
Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, said the number of deaths in the Channel this year had been “shockingly high” and the “devastating trend shows the urgent need for a comprehensive and multi-pronged approach to reduce dangerous crossings”.
“Enforcement alone is not the solution,” he added, as he called on the Government to open up more safe and legal routes for asylum seekers.
Terrible naufrage dans le Pas-de-Calais, au large de Wimereux. Le bilan provisoire s’élève à 12 personnes décédées, 2 disparus et plusieurs blessés. Anna Kettley, deputy executive director of the UK Committee for Unicef, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn that children were amongst those that lost their lives in the Channel today.
“Every child, no matter where they are from, deserves safety, protection and a chance for a better future.
“We urge the UK Government to put the protection of children at the heart of their policies and to ensure there are safe and legal routes to enter the UK.”
The incident comes as more migrants arrived in the UK after making the journey and the number of Channel crossings reached the highest seven-day total for the year so far.
Pictures showed men, women and children being brought ashore in Dover, Kent, by lifeboats and Border Force on Tuesday.
Home Office figures show 351 people made the journey in six boats on Monday, taking the provisional total for 2024 to date 21,403.
This is 2% higher than this time last year (20,973) and 16% lower than at the same point in 2022 (25,387), according to PA news agency analysis of government data.
The latest figures also mean 2,109 migrants arrived between August 27 and September 2 – the highest number recorded for any seven-day period so far in 2024.
The previous highest number of arrivals in a seven-day period this year was 1,758, which occurred as recently as August 26 to September 1, PA analysis shows.

For UK work, it's obtainable from Pantaenius (through its German arm). Delivery companies will check these documents and take the owner through the policy wording. This makes the process and cost more expensive. When considering the procedure for transporting a yacht there are two options to take into account.
