Our maintenance free fiberglass transom swim platforms are available in various sizes and configurations. Each is finished with a non skid surface for passenger and crew safety. The construction is a fiberglass and high density foam core composite. The platforms are fabricated to fit the boat’s transom curve. Adding a Swim Platform to a traditional transom

[FONT=Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]Hi All - I have an older style transom on my Catalina 30 that does not have an open or walk through transom. I have a teak-step boarding ladder that folds down from the cockpit and into the water direct center on the stern. It makes it difficult boarding and de-boarding into our dingy as there is no place to stand that is close enough to the water. My kids are also on and off the stern swimming whenever on the hook and I would like to add a swim platform to my stern next to the boarding ladder. I have space on either side of the ladder to add a platform (or maybe 2; both sides). I am thinking a traditional SS / teak platform found on powerboats (designed for inboard/outboard engines) will fit neatly beside the boarding ladder. I would love to hear any feedback, opinions or suggestions others have on this project, especially if you added a swim platform to a traditional non-walk-thru transom. Whatever you do, don't make it so wide that it will start trailing in the water when you're heeled. A friend added two metal swim steps outboard of where his ladder folded down. He found these acceptable although he wold have used stainless if he could have found them. I forget whether they were fold down/flip ups or fixed, IIRC they were fixed. Although it is tricky to get the right height, I think, I like Dan's first option way more than the second. I've thought of doing that myself. With a platform, you don't really need a ladder to get from the water to the platform, although it might help those who don't like pulling themselves up. I've seen ladders that are attached and fold down from the platform. You could then use a permanently mounted step or two to get inside the boat. I think if you want to have the platform permanently horizontal, you can use brackets (like a ski boat has it mounted) instead of the chain. But I agree with Stu that with a sailboat, you might want the platform smaller at the ends and raised off the water slightly to stay out of the water when sailing/heeling

Hey Joe... That teak one is on the back of a Hunter 31, which tapers toward the stern and inward to the waterline, same as my H34. I don't think its quite as big as it looks. Also, when powered up, the sterns of these boats squat so I would expect that the platform is pretty close to the wave tops then.

yeah, having at least a couple of ladder rungs into the water is essential, in my opinion. It took two tries for us to find the optimal model. I don't think I'd want a permanent swim platform, even if it folds. Maybe the platform solution is some sort of horizontal "shelf" or step that clips onto the ladder for when you want that function.

Boat Swim Platforms How-Tos

How to install a swim platform on my boat.

When installing a swim platform onto your boat, it is recommended that two people participate in the process. The key concept to remember while installing a swim platform is to measure several times before drilling. As you are preparing to drill and mount, the platform can sit perfectly balanced on top of the stern eyes. Align it, so it is perfectly lateral with the water line. A helpful tip to consider in balancing the platform is to use the rope from your trailer (if you have one) and support it through the cleats and pulling it more securely toward the transom. You will be required to pull and adjust the rubber trim as you go.

Installation

Installing the brackets.

• 4 metal brackets
• 1 plastic bracket

Instructions:

The four metal brackets are used primarily for securing the platform in place while mounting it. The plastic bracket is needed to help center the platform in place. These brackets are not pre-installed. You will mount them as part of the installation process. There are five designated holes that you will drill on the platform for these brackets - two holes are for the hull, and the other three are for the platform.

Drilling and Installing the Bolts

• 3 bolts for the platform
• 4 bolts for the hull
• Plastic blocks

Marking and drilling as you go is important when installing a swim platform. At this point, you will align the platform on the brackets and center them perfectly. There will be a slight gap on the hull. There are some plastic blocks that you will place within the hull. Again, marking and drilling as you go is crucial. After drilling, you will seal and secure the bolts and blocks into place.

Making the Final Alignments

Shortly after sealing the bolts and blocks, you will install and secure the rod supports. The shorter rod is put in around the ladder area, and the longer rod will be put in above the hull. Tweak the ends so that they align with the transom and platform. As you drill holes and align the rods, caulk the holes and use hex lag screws to secure everything into place. Additionally, you will need to countersink, or implement the gel coat as you go. After measuring and verifying the locations of the drilled holes and other specifications, you should be ready to go with your newly installed swim platform.

Installing a Transom Swim Platform

Today, new boats are required to meet American Boat and Yacht Council Standard H-41 to provide (and I am paraphrasing here) a means of unassisted reboarding that is accessible to and deployable by a person in the water. 

For safety, this makes a lot of sense, particularly if a boater falls overboard from a vessel with tall gunwales that make it impossible to clamber back over the side. Instead, he or she can deploy a boarding ladder or other reboarding system to climb back in the boat more easily. 

However, a fair number of boats on the water today were built before the establishment of ABYC Standard H-41 in 2014; thus, some older vessels—particularly outboard boats with cutout transoms—might not meet this requirement.

To be clear, this is not a legal requirement on older boats, but it is a good idea. Fortunately, there are ways to add compliant reboarding systems, and one of the most popular for outboard-powered boats is the Garelick model 19536 transom platform with a telescoping, two-step stainless-steel boarding ladder. 

The ladder retracts to stow under the 18-inch-wide-by-15-inch-long polyethylene platform and is secured with a snap on a web strap. To deploy, the swimmer unsnaps the strap, pulls out and folds down the ladder, then uses the handhold and ladder to step up and into the boat. Here’s how to install this boarding system on an outboard-powered boat with an older-style cutout transom.

Tools and Supplies

• Garelick model 19536 transom platform with boarding ladder ($297.88; fisheriessupply.com )
• 1/4-inch aluminum plate or 3/4-inch King Starboard to create a backing plate
• Stainless-steel hardware for through-bolting the platform to the transom
• Power drill and drill-bit set
• Screwdriver and wrench set
• Assembly lube
• Marking pencil or masking tape
• Marine sealant

Determine which side of the transom is most suitable for the platform. Using the supplied stainless-steel hardware, pre-drilled holes and assembly instructions, assemble the platform with the handrail to the outside edge of the platform and the lower support strut to the inside edge of the platform. Tighten the hardware securely and ensure that nothing is loose or wobbly before moving to the next step. To make mounting the platform a bit easier in step three, hold off on installing the boarding ladder assembly until after the boarding platform has been secured to the transom.

To ensure clearance from the outboard, use the steering wheel to swing the motor as far as possible to the side on which you plan to install the platform. Then draw a line indicating the motor’s full extension. Position the platform assembly away from the line, ensuring that the platform itself is parallel to the waterline and about 3 to 4 inches above it. Mark the four mounting holes through the flattened ends (two each for the handrail and strut). Ensure that there are not wires, hoses or objects behind the mounting hole locations that might be damaged from drilling.

Drill the four marked holes with a bit compatible with the selected stainless-steel fasteners (not provided). Hold the drill perpendicular to the transom when drilling. If the transom is less than 2 inches thick, install a backing plate made of aluminum, marine plywood or King Starboard on the inside of the transom. Bed the mounting holes with marine sealant, then through-bolt each of the mounting points with at least a 1 / 4 -inch stainless-steel bolt, washer (on the outside), fender washer (on the inside) and a nylon-locking nut. Tighten each fastener securely.

Garelick offers a few ladder options for this platform, including versions that mount on top or under the platform. The 19536 has a two-step stainless-steel telescoping ladder that mounts underneath, and this configuration eliminates brackets and protrusions (and potential skinned knees) on the top surface of the platform. Use the supplied hardware, pre-drilled holes, stainless-steel hardware and instructions to securely mount the boarding ladder under the platform. Afterward, deploy and retract it to make sure it works smoothly and easily.

Garelick’s model 19536 transom platform and boarding ladder are constructed from corrosion-resistant materials, but salt water can lead to minor corrosion of the stainless-steel components. To keep the boarding platform and ladder in the best possible condition and operating smoothly, wash everything with fresh water and soap after each trip, and occasionally apply metal cleaner and polish to help maintain the luster of the stainless rails. Also, periodically check the mounting hardware for looseness and retighten if necessary.

Upon submission of our quote form , you will receive a response within 3-4 business days with more information to proceed with the order.

A deposit will be requested depending on the order contents and a template kit will be sent to the address provided in the quote request. See Template FAQs for information about the template kit.

Once you have followed the template kit instructions and returned the kit to Swim-Platform, your order will begin construction.

Once the order is completed and ready to be shipped, the remainder of the balance will be required for the order to ship.

While our platforms are custom-built and fit to each template that is received, Swim-Platform tries to maintain a 3-4 week turn-around from receipt of the template to your order being shipped. Each order comes complete with mounting hardware and support hardware, but final fitting and mounting may require additional modification.   ONE CYLINDER PLATFORM LIFT

Sometimes less is more and this is especially true when it comes to SeaLift’s Single Cylinder Platform Lift. SeaLift’s Patented design of the lift mechanism uses only a single cylinder acting on a Single Point of Power instead of the traditional four cylinders. SeaLift Platform Lifts, designed for boats 35′-70′ uses only one cylinder and two hydraulic lines outboard of the transom. ​ Since the Platform Lift only uses one cylinder there are no unnecessary parts exposed to the water, which reduces the routine maintenance that is usually required. Although the SeaLift’s Platform Lift is compact and uses fewer cylinders, it is still plenty powerful. Depending on your boat’s capabilities, the Single Cylinder Platform Lift can lift up to 1,000 lbs.

  DUAL CYLINDER PLATFORM LIFT

In some transom configurations it is necessary to use a dual cylinder system which still incorporates the over center lock.. With two cylinders, this Platform Lift will allow your yacht to carry a larger tender as well as a larger swim platform.
