Facilities & Amenities

Del Rey Yacht Club was founded in 1952 and has been at its present location since 1965. DRYC's Clubhouse and facilities create an ideal atmosphere for the promotion of sailing, cruising and a variety of social and educational activities.

THE DRYC CLUBHOUSE

Our magnificent Clubhouse, enlarged and refurbished in 1994 and again in 2010, serves as the proud center for many of DRYC's activities. Luxuriously furnished, it provides a beautiful site for private and general entertainment. Exquisite woodwork abounds throughout the interior. The comfortable surroundings of the Clubhouse allow members to relax and unwind at ease.    A spacious facility, the Clubhouse features a full-service kitchen with an experienced Executive Chef and staff. Our lovely upstairs dining room, with an exquisite 180° view of the Marina, has the capacity of serving gourmet cuisine up to 300 people.  The banquet rooms, with a capacity of 30-120 guests, are the perfect setting for meetings, seminars and private parties. Our bar and lounge area is perfect for socializing before a meeting or meal, or just sitting and resting in a gracious, peaceful environment. For your convenience, we also have a computer room where members can check email or browse the net. The Club also provides free Wi-Fi access throughout the Clubhouse as well as offering wired connections to our members slips.

FUN IN THE SUN

Our extra-large, heated outdoor swimming pool is available for family enjoyment year-round and is a welcoming oasis during the summer months. The pool is open during Club hours and lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. An adjacent patio and snack bar features a large variety of fresh lunch fare that can be enjoyed under the sun or under the shade of the umbrella tables that are set throughout the patio.  Recently, we christened our north patio as the “Wreck Deck” which features recreational facilities for kids of all ages including a basketball court, table tennis, bad mitten/volleyball court, tetherball and a miniature indoor pocket pool table.  The Wreck Deck is also the site for many summer movie nights for our Junior Club members.

SLIPS and DRY STORAGE

Our slips and docks are designed for ease of storage and maintenance of all yacht sizes, whether a small boat or a 100+ foot yacht.   • There are over 319 slips ranging in size from 25 to 78 feet, plus several 120 feet end ties, with easy access to the main channel.   • All slips feature 30 amp electrical service; up to several hundred amps for larger yachts and at least one lockable fiberglass dockbox for handy storage.  We also offer slip internet services. • For additional storage, 234 dry storage lockers are located around the Club.   • 150 dinghy racks are provided in various locations around the Club for out-of-water storage.   • A 1-1/4 ton capacity small-boat electric hoist is adjacent to 53 trailer spaces. A "do-it-yourself" work area equipped with a bench, vise and electrical outlets is nearby.   • All docks, fingers and gangways are well lit and private. • On-shore heads, showers and ice machines are provided along the north and south edges of the dock-side pedestrian way.  A washing machine and dryer area is also conveniently located on the grounds.  • A guest dock is located in front of the Clubhouse. (Visiting Yachtsmen: Please phone the DRYC Front Office for guest space assignment.)   • The private, main parking lot accommodates 333 cars, with an auxiliary lot available for an additional 34 cars. Both lots have controlled access, with entrance available only through use of a gate device, or voice access when the Clubhouse is open.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST

We had a birthday party onboard the Regency tonight. The entire crew were amazing. Francini was our director and made sure everything was set up and all of our needs were met. She was very kind, made sure everyone had a good time. She made herself available to all of our guests through the entire cruise.
What can I say except that this company provides excellence in everything that they do! I rarely find such genuine care and comfort from the beginning of the process to the end – I felt very taken care of and valued. In addition, the party was better than I expected! The service was amazing, the food was outstanding – I am still getting comments even months after – my guests are still telling me what a great time they had and asking when are we going to do it again! All of my guests (and me too) loved cruising into the sunset with cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres on the sky deck, dining at dusk with the great cafe lighting that Asdruval Party Rentals provided and then dancing the night away to awesome music by Brad at Rhythm City!
My cousins rented a Yacht for my Aunt’s 70th birthday party. We launched from Marina Del Ray and the boat did a loop around the marina for 5 hours. It goes by pretty fast especially since you’ll be enjoying dinner, entertainment, and when available, the open bar. The staff were amazing and the bartender kept up with all the orders with no hiccup. Years ago, my other cousin had a reception on another type of Yacht for their wedding reception. Maybe one day I’ll throw something on a Yacht and invite my closest friends. I think this is a better way to throw a special party than the usual land locked location.
I had my 50th birthday party on October 27th 2017. Erin was my party planner she made sure everything ran smoothly I had no worries. The decorations were beautiful I had a gatsby-themed party. I wish I could name everyone who helped on the yacht. I had 130 guess on the DANDEANA yacht all my guests were attended to no problems. The food was delicious the drinks were great the service was fabulous. This is my second yacht charter with this company and they never seem to fail me. Thank you everyone who helped for me to have a grand 50th birthday even the ones behind the scenes, I appreciate you all I’ll see you at my next event thank you everyone. Captain was great; thank you Jeffrey for greeting everyone. The casino on board was perfect, my band was great, my DJ was great. Thanks again I will never forget this day.
We held my Mom’s 70th birthday here on 1028 and we had an amazing time. The boat was gorgeous, very clean, modern and elegant. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful. Our planner, Erin, was very helpful. She was flexible and accommodated all of my needs, and gave great advice given her experience. I would absolutely recommend this boat for any of your parties.
Fantasea hosted my mother’s ash scattering at sea earlier today and I could not have been happier with the results. The food and service were excellent! Kudos to Jasmine, Erin, Capt Luis, Capt Carlos, Mariano, Julio, Wilson and Francini for their wonderful team work! I highly recommend Fantasea!

If you like tennis, pickleball, great people, marina views and fun (or even if you don't), MRC is a great way to spend a morning or evening and get a solid workout in the process. Wonderful experience the past year

If you are looking for a great tennis and pickleball community, the Marina Racquet Club at The Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey is a perfect option. MRC hosted a team-building event for our company and it was a wonderful experience! We had a group of about 15 at all different playing levels, and whether it was tennis or pickle, everyone had a great time. Our instructor, Sofia, was fantastic and tailored her instruction to the level of the players. The facilities, courts and lights were first class and we enjoyed a very fun happy hour at The Ritz after we wrapped. We look forward to coming again!
