BOAT FAIRING – Him Vs Her!! (MJ Sailing Catamaran Build – Ep 227)

Matt and I each tackle a fairing job in our catamaran, but in very different ways.

For the ‘Him’ portion, Matt picks up a project we started back in the fall, of working on our water tanks. We’ve built them ourselves because they’ll be stronger and lighter than plastic, but we need to go through steps of preparing them to hold water, which means using Total Boat’s epoxy fairing compound. This fairing compound will stick better, which is very important when it is the container for our potable water.

Down below deck, I’m ‘beginning finishes’ by using Total Boat’s polyester fairing compound. There’s been a few test rounds in our forward bunk, but in this video I’ll be focusing in on our master vanity, and what it takes to blend down the edges of the fiberglass and start getting the first rounds of fairing compound on.

We hope you enjoy!!

Much love from Annapolis! Jessica, Matt & Georgie

BIGGEST MISTAKES We’ve Made So Far – Months of Fixing (MJ Sailing – Ep 226)

We’ve made lots of mistakes on our build so far. Some easy to fix and others will take weeks.

Over the past few months we’ve gotten so many comments on how we always seem to know what we’re doing, and how did this come about as we’re not professional boat builders? Well, the truth is that we make mistakes too. A lot of little ones that are easy to fix, but some of them are going to set us back weeks and weeks of fixing.

Sit down in your favorite armchair and relax as we tell you about the biggest mistakes we’ve made so far on this build, what it’s going to take to fix them, and the time we’ll need to spend doing each one.

You Wanna Stick Me WHERE?!?! (MJ Sailing CATAMARAN BUILD – Ep 225)

Things are about to get a little tight in the bedroom.

It’s time to get back to building!! And you guessed it….more toilet talk!, lol. Not too much this week, but since we have figured out where we want the toilet, it’s time for Matt to build a base for it, which will let us begin the steps for cabinets and counters in that space soon.

Another older project we visit again is finally closing off the chamfered area in our forward v-berth, with the piece of foam Matt had fit to the area a few weeks earlier. Once that is in, we can begin thinking of the finishes we’d like for the ceiling and overhead – and look into fairing anything which won’t have a liner.

Lastly, it’s time to bond in the frame to the aft bunks. With the lower bulkheads in place and properly spaced out to eventually place our diesel engines in the area, as well as having a lifting center to get access to them, we can bond the outer ring of the frame in place. The weather is literally close to freezing in the rest of the boat, but thanks to our radiator heaters we’re able to keep it nice and steamy in the bedroom for some bonding.

We hope you enjoy!

FIRST LOOKS at the Max Cruise 44 CATAMARAN! (MJ Sailing – Ep 224)

The first ever production Max Cruise 44 Sailing Catamaran has just been completed, and we have all the images to give you a tour!

Now, after months of waiting (on all sides I’m sure!!) we have images from the first completed Max Cruise 44 Sailing Catamaran, and we’re so excited to share them with you! Thanks to Terry, over at the factory, we have about 25 photos and 2 walk-through videos in each hull. Not only are we excited to see real images of what the finished product will look like, but for all of you at home, this should give a MUCH better understanding of what all of those pieces of green foam will eventually turn into.

Of course, as we’ve mentioned, we’ll be making small tweaks here and there to best personalize it to us. But let us know what you think in the comments below or in the video. We hope you enjoy!

(Shortly after this boat arrives in Florida, Matt and I will be going down to see it in person, so expect new video of that coming up in the next few months!! 😀)

CATAMARAN BUILD – The ‘Reach Around’ Test 😲💩 (MJ Sailing – Ep 223)

How much space do you really need on a toilet to do your business? Well at least enough room to reach behind you and wipe!!

Last week you’ll have seen that we received our compact toilet from Vetus, and this week we figure out placement for it in the master head. Which truthfully, is much easier said than done since we need to consider how far it will intrude in our walking space, as well as how much counter/vanity space it could cut down on. Plus, there’s the ever important ‘reach around’ test.

Then we take a few minutes to discuss our thoughts on the Vision 444 catamaran, which is one of the boats we had really been looking forward to touring at the Annapolis Boat Show, but did not make it. Thankfully we’d been introduced to the owner’s last summer and they were happy to have us aboard to poke our heads around before departing for warmer waters. As a catamaran sized much closer to ours (as opposed to the 48 & 52 foot versions we saw at the show), it gave us a great idea for what’s possible in that kind of spacing. Plus we loved the design (similar veneers) and use of color and vinyl.

Enjoy!! Much love from Annapolis! Jessica, Matt & Georgie

CATAMARAN BUILD – We Brought On A HUGE Partner!! (MJ Sailing – Ep 222)

CATAMARAN BUILD – It’s Time to Discuss Furniture (MJ Sailing – Ep 221)

Now it’s time to begin planning the interior of our boat.

Become a Lord or Lady today!! https://establishedtitles.com/mjsailing

Even though we’ll be spending the winter working in each hull side because we can heat the fore and aft areas, we’ve found that in order to properly place a few of these things out, we first need to fit out the salon. Even though we won’t be getting to that area for months!! But, having some of those items in place helps us decide what we want to do down in the hulls.

Which, for the main focus of this episode, we’re working in the master head and vanity. Questions come up like “Where we want to fit the toilet? How is this going to impact where we place the counter? Would it be best to have sliding doors for our cabinet, or opening?”

It turns out, there is A LOT to consider when the world is (partially) your oyster. But once we get a few of the necessary decisions out of the way, Matt is able to template and cut the bulkheads which will separate our shower from another cabinet in the forward section of the head.

So much planning and fitting to come – scary to think this is only the beginning!!

CATAMARAN BUILD – Closing Up Usable Storage Space. 😲 (MJ Sailing – Ep 220)

In this week’s episode we decide to make our own plans in the forward bunk, and close up an area which is used for storage on all production Max Cruises’. This is the first time we’re making a change based on what we want instead of what’s in the plans. Deviating out on your own can sometimes mean big challenges as you’re faced with finding solutions on your own, but Matt was a champ at templating this oddly shaped area within the boat and it came out looking great.

Also, another section we have to address, because back in the summer we ‘made alterations’ from the original plan to make more room for our engine bed. We still need structural support in that area, so once again Matt needs to make something from scratch to replace the bulkhead which we’d moved further forward.

We hope you enjoy the changes to the boat – even just a few small additions is really changing the looks of these areas.

CATAMARAN BUILD – Our First Piece of Furniture!! (MJ Sailing – Ep 219)

Now that the decks and cabin sides are on, it’s time to begin building out the interior!

After jumping back to where we last left you, we have some good news in the amount of methacrylate left in our bucket to get the remaining cabin sides on. And – one last nice weather day to do the job.

With the molded pieces done for the year, we then turn our focus into bonding many of those areas from the inside – such as the side decks and foredeck to our hulls and webbing.

But then…..comes the most exciting part of this episode. We bond in our very first piece of furniture – the forward guest bed!!! 😀 And although it *is* still a structural piece, that doesn’t make us any less excited to get it in.

Join us to see how it comes together, and make sure to stick around til the end to watch Tucker’s special goodbye, lol.

Let us know if you have any questions, we can’t wait to hear from you!

CATAMARAN BUILD – How We Work Through the COLD Winter (MJ Sailing – Ep 218)

Snowstorms are arriving in Maryland, but that won’t stop us from working through the winter.

We’re going to take a jump into the future in this video (current time, filmed just this week) to give you the details on how we continue to build inside the tent through the winter. If you remember those large propane heaters we have inside the tent which came in great use this past spring as we began bonding? They haven’t been turned on once. But…we’ve found other ways to warm up areas inside the hulls to keep it warm enough to continue fiberglassing and have the resin fully cure.

But – before we can get into that – it is time for a refresher on the layout of our boat. Many of you don’t know how our Max Cruise is laid out, or which each section of the hull is. So join me as I bring you through all the renders we have from Max Cruise to show you the entire layout. As an added bonus, there’s also a few photos in there taken from this summer of hull #4!

Plus, we add more names to the Hull of Fame at the end. 🙂
