With under 50 days to go, international entries from three countries mark the first signups for the 10th edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, a 673nm predominantly downwind run to Nha Trang, Vietnam.

Racing kicks off on 24 and 25 October 2023 on Victoria Harbour in front of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s main Clubhouse at Kellett Island.

The Category 1 Offshore race is known for its windy and warm weather sailing conditions and is run under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Racing finishes in Nha Trang, which boasts many family-friendly resorts.

The first entries hail from Italy, the Philippines and the United States. Among them, for the first time, are two boats from the Standard Insurance Centennial team. Ernesto Echauz’s Reichel Pugh 75 Standard Insurance Centennial 5 , which took Line Honours in the Rolex China Sea Race earlier this year, is testing its offshore ability together with teammates on board TP52 Standard Insurance Centennial 3 helmed by Emerson Villena, making their first appearance in the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race.

Italian Maserati Multi70 skipped by Giovanni Soldini, is back for its second edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race . After narrowly missing the oceanic match race against another Hong Kong trimaran, Orma 60 SHK Scallywag Fuku , Maserati Multi70 took Multihull Line Honours in the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race and is set to challenge the multihull speed record.

Also to be watched is American Jim Murray with his Pac52 Callisto . Callisto has extensive offshore racing experience in America and just took 2nd place in the RORC Caribbean 600 IRC 0 division. The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race will be their first Asian offshore race.

The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race was first run in 1996 and, since 2004, has been held biennially, and this year returns after a three-year hiatus after the pandemic. It is recognised as a qualifying race for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and as the longest Category One offshore race in Asia.

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race 2021

About event

Start : Hong Kong

Finish : Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam

The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is organized by the RHKYC and will be run under the auspices of RORC and the World Sailing Category One Special Offshore Regulations.

It is a challenging, predominantly downwind, 673nm fast passage to Nha Trang, on the south-eastern coast of Vietnam - the race is recognized as a qualifying race for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The Race was first run in 1996 and then regularly since 2004.

A popular tourist destination in its own right, Nha Trang also offers a great revictualling point for boats intending to continue on to other seasonal sailing events in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Australia.

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race 2021

This is my first time, is this ok?

Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.

What is included and not included in the price?

As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.

— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;

— bed linen and towels;

— organizational fee;

— skipper services;

— the cost of mooring in marinas;

— basic sailing training;

— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.

Additional expenses you will need to pay:

— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;

— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;

— personal expenses.

You cannot choose a team?

No comments, be the first one!

Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race – Final Boats Arrive in Nha Trang

Michael Lunn’s Azuree 40 Lion Rock was the final boat to sail into Nha Trang, Vietnam this afternoon at 13h 45m 45s, putting her in 4 th place in IRC Racer 1 division.

Duncan Hine, skipper of Line Honours Winner Alive a Reichel/Pugh 66 which arrived on Friday afternoon at 15h 31m 36s with an elapsed time of 50h 11m 56s summed up their race, “It was a lot of fun; we had a good time.  There wasn't quite enough breeze to surf all the way but it was enough to blow out our A3/4 which meant that we didn't VMG run as well as we would have liked to so we had to change our race route – we did a few extra miles.  No real lows of the race; we didn't wipe out or anything.  It was wet but it was wonderful.  I always tell all the guys, don’t bring your pants with you; a light jacket is all you need and that was definitely the case this time.  A lot of the fellas didn't put on a jacket.  There were too many highs in the Race to mention.  The Race is the best this is our second-time racing in it and I'm sure we will be back.”

2 nd IRC Overall winner and winner IRC Racer 1, Joachim Isler, who co-owns Mills 41 Ambush with Drew Taylor – and who is also Volvo Hong Kong to Vietnam Race Chairman – said: “It was a fantastic ride on Ambush; we had boat speeds averaging around 15 to 18kts and sometimes exceeding 20kts.  Great crew work and a lot of enjoyment on a very fast boat.  We are very happy with our result and very happy with the Race.  We had great results with the IRC Racer 2 division starting a day early; I think the staggered start concept will hopefully bring more interest from the smaller boats. Again, the Race is bit of a hidden gem in the offshore racing world and I hope that it gets more positive exposure and we see more entries in the future.  Judging from the big smiles we see from fellow competitors in Nha Trang, I hope that the word of mouth will bring in more boats for the next edition.”

Ambush co-owner Taylor who has only missed one Hong Kong to Vietnam Race since its establishment in 1996 added, “It was another brilliant race down here.  It's obviously still one of the best ocean races there is to do around the world.  We had a great run sitting on high teens and 20kts for a long time.  The format is also fantastic, its great having the smaller boats arrive around the same time and hopefully that will encourage more boats in the future.  It is as I said, just a great race!”

The provisional start date for the 2019 Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is set for 16 October with the Volvo China Coast Regatta being held in the lead up to the event. To keep up with the latest news on the Volvo Hong Kong to Vietnam Race follow the Volvo China Coast Race Week Facebook page.
