While in Dubrovnik, you need to try the local dessert – Dubrovačka rožata , which is part of the gastronomic heritage of medieval Dalmatia and survived despite many influences from the Venetian and Ottoman Empires. The first records of the Dubrovačka rožata date back to the time of the Venetians, and in 1300 it was recorded under the name “friar’s pudding”.

The Venetians are long gone, but this dessert is still here, with traces of influences from French cuisine. It is a caramelized shell in which rožata is cooked and the main ingredient is a rose liqueur. Day 2: Lopud island- Šipan island

Lopud is the most developed among the Elaphite Islands , a small archipelago containing several isles located northwest of Dubrovnik. It is also the second-largest in terms of size, while a favourable climate allows for nearly 2600 hours of sunshine each year.

A mild climate has led to the development of lush and rich Mediterranean and subtropical vegetation with lemons, oranges, pines, cypresses and palm trees. Your local yacht captain will want to take you to Šunj – a sandy beach considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the Croatian Adriatic sea. The sandy shoal of this beach stretches a few hundred meters from the shore, which makes the bay ideal for a family yacht charter in Dubrovnik.

Day 3: The Island of Šipan –  Pelješac peninsula

The biggest island of the Elaphite archipelago is Šipan, which is also listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest ratio of olive trees to the population of its total area, is a must-see during your yacht charter in Dubrovnik.

A lot of people from Dubrovnik come to this magical island because of the astonishing restaurant Bowa, where you can berth your yacht and enjoy delicious food. This attractive restaurant is located right by the sea, with tables under the canopies set on charming oak and fir constructions which makes it an inviting place for a meal. Swim, sunbathe and have fun with your water toys while waiting for the food.

After lunch, we recommend a visit to the city of Ston on the Pelješac peninsula . The “City of Salt” will amaze you with its rich history and numerous attractions. As soon as you step into Ston, you will feel as if you have travelled back into the distant past; tradition is woven into every stone and building.

While spending time in Ston, visit the famous saltworks, one of the three saltworks in Croatia, and the oldest in Europe, dating back to the 14th century. It was formed after the Republic of Ragusa bought Ston in the year 1333. Ston was surrounded by defensive walls, which are a popular attraction and by length, second only to the Great Wall of China.

Moreover, if you opt for swimming, sunbathing or playing with water toys, we recommend you anchor in the famous Prapratno bay. This is one of the most beautiful bays in this part of Pelješac, with a long sandy beach in an area overgrown with pine forests.

Day 4 – Pelješac peninsula – Mljet National Park

The island of Mljet is the most forested of all the Croatian Adriatic islands, and unquestionably, one of the most attractive. It is perfect for enjoying the beauty of untouched nature that will enchant everyone who visits this enchanting isle. Mljet is an island of mystery, with rich forests, beautiful beaches and an incredibly blue sea, ideal for enjoying pristine nature.

You can ride an e-bike through the National Park or just enjoy an al-fresco dining experience on the Greenest Croatian island. Here, you can explore the Veliko lake, with an islet of St. Mary and a church and monastery founded in the 12th century by the Benedictines of Monte Gargano in Italy. Alternative targets for exploration also are the Malo lake and the Odysseus Cave .

Day 5 -Mljet National Park – Lastovo Island

A small and inhabited island, Lastovo is the perfect place for those looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday, in untouched and beautiful nature. Lastovo island has a mild Mediterranean climate and due to its good position, it has more than 2700 hours of sunshine a year.

Day 6: Island of Lastovo – Island of Korčula

The city of Korčula is surrounded by 13th-century walls and it is one of the best-preserved fortified medieval towns in Croatia.

Until the beginning of the 18th century, it was forbidden to build outside the city walls, and visitors entered via a wooden drawbridge. Another fun fact about Korčula is that Marco Polo , one of the world’s biggest historical travellers, was born on this island and spent his childhood in one of the houses that are still there.

Korčula is not only a historical place; it has a lot of stunning beaches and bays where you can spend your yacht charter vacation in Croatia peacefully. It is normally prepared of several types of fish stewed with spices, vegetables and red or white wine, or even vinegar to keep the flesh of the fish whole.  Ston Cake known as “ Stonska torta ” is a cake made with pasta mixed with nuts (most often almonds and walnuts), lemon zest, sugar, sometimes chocolate and butter, all bound with beaten eggs. Mali Ston oysters are fresh European flat oysters produced in Mali Ston Bay – one of the very few remaining habitats of this oyster species.

The main attractions of the park are two saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo jezero, located within the island, and the island of St. Mary, situated in Veliko jezero. You can moor in Polace Bay.

Pelješac's vineyards are situated on sunny slopes, offering spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea. Additionally, it boasts beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters and picturesque surroundings. The largest settlement is Lastovo, surrounded by hills and adorned with distinctive houses featuring decorated chimneys from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Lastovo carnival (Lastovo Poklad), also known as the "Lastovo Poklad of Songs and Games," is a traditional cultural event held annually in February. The Lastovo Poklad was declared an intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia in 2008, and it is currently nominated for inclusion on UNESCO's list of good practices.  SAILING RATING:  Beginner - With easy line-of-sight navigation, clear waters and light winds it's a great start point for sailors (and an easy cruising ground for experienced ones).  Peak season is July & August, but you can sail here from March to October.

Dubrovnik is a brilliant place to go sailing, so good choice! From this itinerary, you’ll see mountains, lakes, beaches and bays, plus islands, cliffs, caves and super-cute villages a world away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

In total, our voyage will be around 116 nautical miles, which means an average of just under 20 nM a day – with the longest day being 28 nM. In a yacht you should be able to make about 5 knots (Nm/hour), so we’re talking about 3-5 hours of sailing time a day, which should leave ample time to explore the places where you start and stop, to nip into cute looking bays for lunch, or to throw down the anchor so you can have a swim. You’ll return to Dubrovnik next Friday evening, so if you haven’t been to explore it yet, there is still time.  

From Dubrovnik, you need to beating into the wind (the prevailing wind for the summer season is a south-westerly from the sea to the shore. Once out of the channel, bear north-westerly and follow the coast, admiring the landscape (and expensive houses) along the way. Our first port of call is Sipan, on the island of the same name.

Sipan is notable for both its exceptional unspoilt beaches and its snorkelling, with a pretty old town and very welcoming locals.  

Polace is a naturalist’s dream – it is part of a national park and conservation area, so the whole area is full of lush vegetation and is a haven for wildlife. It’s a tranquil and serene place to spend the night, and there are some nature trails to be explored and a beautiful lake to be discovered if you have the time. The name ‘Polace’ is derived from the Italian word for palace, so called because there used to be a magnificent building overlooking the bay (from 100 to 600 AD). Unfortunately, the palace has long since disappeared, but you can still explore its ruins.

During the summer season, the local town includes a couple of bars and a restaurant to help to keep your spirits up, but the population dwindles to below fifty people in the winter.  

Korcula is an ancient Greek town, which has developed over the years, gaining fortifications and a giant wall along the way. There are crazy atmospheric narrow steets and stacks of architecture to be admired, including the Cathedral of Saint Mark, which has an interior lined with works of art from Italian masters, collected from when it was part of the Venetian empire. The town is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the great explorer (and sailor) Marco Polo, who was one of the first Europeans to find China (and certainly the first one to document his travels) and the book he wrote helped to inspire a certain Christopher Columbus. You’ll find a plaque that marks his birthplace in the old town.

Aside from Marco Polo, Korcula is the home to some fine wine and olive oil, and the figs here are supposed to be the best figs in the whole of Croatia.  

Leaving Korcula, it’s time for a change of direction and another island, which is only 13 nautical miles away. Bearing pretty much due East takes you to Trstenik. It’s a small town which is technically on a peninsular from the mainland, but it has the look and feel of a small fishing village.

As it’s only a short sail today, you’ll pass a couple of bays on the port side where it is possible to stop for a quick dip, or you can head straight to Trstenik to enjoy what it has to offer. Trstenik is the main town in one of the key wine regions in Croatia and there’s a number of local vineyards – including the famous Grgic winery – where you can indulge in sampling the local produce. The most well-known wine from the region is a Plavac Mali, which is very, very drinkable.  

Lopud is covered with pine trees and has a delightful sandy beach. Some people say it’s the most beautiful island in Croatia, but it’s hard to say – there are so many beautiful islands. Despite being so close to Dubrovnik, it has traditionally been an island that was frequented only by the local aristocrats, so it is never crazy busy, even in the peak season, and you shouldn’t feel as though you have to elbow your way through crowds in the town. There’s no cars here, and if you can’t relax here, you can’t relax anywhere.

Restaurants-wise, you should be able to find what you’re looking for in Lopud, and there’s a good mix of bars to help the evening go serenely.  

Don’t worry if it suddenly feels like you’ve stepped back in time - Dubrovnik is one of the key filming locations for Game of Thrones, and they sometimes dress up the whole city for filming!

After drinking in the atmosphere in Dubrovnik – and getting the same feeling as thousands of other sailors have had down the years – it’s time to head back around the headland and inland to the marina. You should aim to be back in the marina before 5pm so that the boats can be inspected ready for the changeover day tomorrow.

Sailing Conditions

Winds are usually between Force 3 and Force 6 – which are ideal sailing winds - and the hotter the sun is, the stronger the wind. Oddly enough, you’ll find that winds rise between 9am and mid-day, then there’s a few hours lull (the local sailors say that the wind has ‘gone to lunch’), before picking up stronger from around 2pm to 6pm. At night, there’s light breezes back towards the sea as the air cools, or no breeze at all.

Outside of the sailing season, winds can arrive in any which direction, and at unreliable speeds – they can be strong and brutal winds from the mountains, icy winds from across Russia, tropical storms from across the Mediterranean, or gentle breezes from Italy.

Marina Details - ACI Marina, Dubrovnik

The main ACI Marina in Dubrovnik is 6km (which translates into a decent hour-long coastal walk or a short (and cheap) ten minute taxi ride) away from the stunning Dubrovnik city centre, which has an Old town which is, in its entirety, a UNESCO world heritage site, and a major tourist destination.

The 380 berth marina was voted ‘best marina in the Adriatic’ for 2010-12 and features not just the usual restaurants, bars, and shops, but a swimming pool, football and tennis courts, hairdresser and bureau de change.
