Burgess capitalise on buoyant market

After selling four superyachts in seven days, we look at the extent of their success compared to previous years….

Burgess, a leading superyacht brokerage house, has announced that it has sold four yachts in seven days. The sales amount to over 166m in total length and just under 65million EUR in total value (last known asking price). The yachts sold reveal the global scope of the company, with teams in Asia, Palma, New York and Monaco each securing individual sales.

Jonathan Beckett, CEO comments, “The past 13/14 months have been pretty extraordinary – almost relentless in the sales market. Yachts have been selling at really good prices and talks of ‘COVID deals’ was quite honestly a myth. We are delighted with the current sprint to the finishing line of 2021, but we aren’t there yet – still more deals to be done as we enter December!”

Since 2015 Burgess have sold over 10,000 metres worth of 30m+ superyachts. They've sold 213 superyachts in the same time period with the average vessel being 50.4 metres in length. The total value of their superyacht sales since 2015 is 5.27 billion euros. The numbers are staggering, and yet, their yearly average is still expected to increase. The four vessels which were sold in the same week are listed below;

The first yacht sold was the 55.5m brand new Damen support vessel Time Off, which was recently given to its new owner through the Palma office, which took control of the sale and also represented the seller. Time Off features an accommodation layout for up to 7 guests and 4 staff plus crew. Time Off was on the market for just under a year and was available for delivery from July 2021.

Next up was the 44m Bloemsma & Van Breeman motor yacht Arete. She joined the Burgess sales fleet in March 2021, and eight months later was sold with the Burgess Miami team bringing the buyer and representing the seller.

Moon Sand Too, the 33.9m Feadship Lagoon Cruiser was next to go with the Burgess Asia office representing the seller. Moon Sand Too joined the Burgess sales fleet in August 2021 and was sold three months later.

The grand finale for an incredibly successful week was the sale of the sailing yacht Ribelle. A firm favourite within the Burgess fleet, this 32.6m Vitters performance sailing yacht joined the Burgess fleet as a whisper listing before the owners became committed to selling at the right price.

Throughout the past year, and the pandemic, Burgess has seen significant activity in the sales and new build sector as more and more clients decide that now is the right time to get on the yacht purchase ladder. The market has been extremely buoyant since the last quarter of 2020. Data from The Superyacht Agency reveals that the kind of yachts Burgess are selling this year are on average 54 per cent more valuable than the yachts they were selling five years ago. Even though they sold seven more superyachts in 2016 than they have so far this year, the total value of the vessels this year is worth 129 million more.

Despite three of the four vessels sold last week being under 45 metres, the average length of vessels sold is 52.1 metres for this year. Not only is this a testament to the size of vessels Burgess sold earlier in the year, but it also proves the company's burgeoning success in the megayacht market. Earlier this year they sold the 126 metre motor yacht ‘Octopus’. The pandemic years have also proven to be a financial success for the company. Our data shows that they made more money from selling superyachts in 2019 than they did in 2016 and 2017 combined.

Furthermore, as Beckett highlights, there is still time to sell more yachts. If Burgess sell just two more yachts by then end of the year it will be just the third time in seven years that they sell 20+ superyachts in twelve months. The data further cements their role as a brokerage giant of the superyacht industry.

Burgess: Inside one of the industry’s leading brokerage firms

With its roots dating back to 1975, Burgess is a well-established name in the yachting world. Since its inception, it has grown into a global network of 14 successful offices that have sold some of the world’s most notable and expensive yachts. With 80 yachts currently on the market, Burgess is a brokerage house that many owners turn to when wanting to sell a yacht quickly and efficiently – and it’s this stellar sales process that accounts for a large portion of the firm’s success.

To find out more about this professional process and the “Burgess DNA”, BOAT speaks to Richard Lambert, Burgess’ senior partner and head of sales, at the firm’s Monaco office.

Yachting revolves around relationships

Since day one, Burgess has put its clients first. The owners who have sold their yachts with Burgess will have been offered everything from a glossy photoshoot to in-depth pricing advice. “We view yacht ownership as a journey where we can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the client,” Lambert explains.

Burgess' ethos is to assign one point of contact to every client who is supported by the global team of brokers. "Every client has a direct broker and this person brings together expertise from across the company. This includes yacht management, insurance, crew services, new build and charter. Effectively you have the whole team of 31 brokers working for you with one point of contact,” explains Lambert

“Providing a 360-degree service to our clients is what drives us and has led Burgess to the enviable position that it commands today,” he continues. “I am proud to say that the majority of our clients have gone on to take advantage of the full range of services that we have to offer, and have established long-term relationships with their brokers.”

Get instant exposure

Most owners looking to sell their yacht would like an easy transaction. Therefore, owners who choose to sell with Burgess will see their yacht listings shared far and wide. “Our standing in the yachting industry and the relationships that we have built over the last 45 years as a business means that an owner who is looking to sell is not just getting exposure of their yacht through our global network of 14 offices, but exposure to the most qualified clients looking to purchase,” says Lambert. Burgess also has relationships with all relevant media that target ultra-high-net-worth individuals. “Our in-house marketing team are dedicated to providing balanced and effective sales campaigns,” he adds. “They are second to none.”

However, this exposure does not have to be public. “There are a number of yachts that we have sold via very discreet campaigns, that have not been publicly listed for sale,” he adds. An owner always has the option of selling a yacht off the market by tapping into the company’s client base, which includes a variety of nationalities and professions, as well as an increasing number of younger clients and new buyers.

Extensive in-house research indicates that the majority (65.4 per cent) of Burgess’ current clientele are individuals who have acquired their wealth, while 10.7 per cent inherited it. The remaining 24 per cent accounts for a mix of both. “Being on a superyacht is not just the best holiday that you can have, it is where multiple generations can enjoy time together in a unique environment,” continues Lambert.

A successful track record

With 27 sales this year so far, Burgess is staying at the forefront of an “incredibly active market”. These sales have seen the likes of the 89-metre Cloud 9 , the 30.4-metre Hummingbird , and the 43-metre EVA. 4EVA change hands. As Lambert explains, a successful transaction for Burgess is one where a client has been given the best advice, has been able to find the perfect yacht for their needs, and the transaction has concluded professionally and harmoniously.

“Year after year, Burgess has delivered the most successful sales programme in the world of superyachting,” explains Lambert. “Over the last two years, it has been exciting to see a number of new clients becoming owners for the first time.” And despite numerous pressures on the large yacht market as a result of current world events, the team at Burgess is still experiencing strong demands for both purchase and charter. “Which I feel just shows how Burgess is the go-to broker in the industry,” says Lambert.

To get more advice on how to sell a yacht with Burgess , contact the team directly here . Or, visit the Burgess team at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022, taking place between 6-11 September, at the Superyacht Extension SYE 236 in Vieux Port to discuss any of your yachting requirements or view a selection of exceptional yachts, which will be on display in Port Pierre Canto.

The history of the city goes back to the late Bronze Age –early Iron Age . Later, it became the earliest Greek settlement in the northwestern Black Sea region and was probably mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus as emporion Kremnoi (Κρήμνοι, meaning cliffs). [16] It had contacts as well to the other Greek colonies around the Black Sea as well as to the indigenous communitys of the hinterland. [17]

In the 13th century, Pisan merchants founded a colony, Portus Pisanus, which was however short-lived. [18] Taganrog was founded by Peter the Great on 12 September 1698. [3] The first Russian Navy base, it hosted the Azov Flotilla of Catherine the Great (1770–1783), which subsequently became the Russian Black Sea Fleet . Taganrog was granted city status in 1775. [4]

By the end of the 18th century, Taganrog had lost its importance as a military base after Crimea and the entire Sea of Azov were absorbed into the Russian Empire . In 1802, Tsar Alexander   I granted the city special status , which lasted until 1887. In 1825, the Alexander I Palace in Taganrog was used as his summer residence, and he died there in November 1825. Also in Taganrog is the House of Teacher , a mansion where numerous artists have performed.

Although it had been bombarded and damaged by an Anglo-French fleet in 1855, [18] Taganrog became important as a commercial port, used for the import of grain by the end of the 19th century until the early 20th century. Industrialization increased in the city when Belgian and German investors founded a boiler factory, an iron and steel foundry , a leather factory, and an oil press factory. By 1911, fifteen foreign consulates had opened in the city. [19]

During World War I , Taganrog was occupied by the troops of the German Army from May to August 1918. In 1919, General Anton Denikin established his headquarters at the Avgerino mansion in the city while commanding White Russian troops fighting in South Russia during the Russian Civil War . When the White Russians were defeated and Bolshevik power was established in the city on 25 December 1919, Denikin's remaining troops and the British Consulate were evacuated by HMS Montrose . Full power was granted to the executive committee of The City Soviet Workers' council on 17 December 1920, and Taganrog briefly joined the Ukrainian SSR as the administrative center of Taganrog Okrug, until it was transferred to the Russian SFSR along with Shakhty Okrug on 1 October 1924.

During World War II , Taganrog was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1943 during Operation Barbarossa , when two SS divisions entered the city on 17 October 1941, followed by the Wehrmacht . The city suffered extensive damage. Under German occupation the local government system was replaced by a German-style Bürgermeisteramt (Mayor's Office), which governed the city until it was liberated by the Red Army on 30 August 1943. Within the framework of administrative divisions , it is incorporated as Taganrog Urban Okrug —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [1] As a municipal division , this administrative unit also has urban okrug status. [10]

The Assumption Cathedral in Taganrog, Russia (1818-1938), where Anton Chekhov was christened on February 10, 1860 Assumption Cathedral.jpg

Anton Chekhov featured the city and its people in many of his works, including Ionych , The House with an Attic , The Man in a Shell , Van'ka , Three Years , Mask , and My Life . It is believed that Taganrog may have been the Lukomorye (fairy tale land) in which Alexander Pushkin 's Ruslan and Lyudmila (1820) was set. [22] The city also appeared in the novels of Ivan Vasilenko and Konstantin Paustovsky and in the poems of Nikolay Sherbina and Valentin Parnakh .

The legend of "Elder Fyodor Kuzmich " is cited in the book Roza Mira by Russian mystic Daniil Andreyev . According to this legend, the Russian tsar Alexander I did not die in Taganrog, but instead left his crown and the status of monarch to continue his life as a traveling hermit. [23]

In foreign literature, the city was mentioned in the titles of Der Tote von Taganrog by Eberhard von Cranach-Sichart   [ de ] and Taganrog by Reinhold Schneider .

In 2004 Sabine Wichert published a collection of poems entitled Taganrog .

In Maria Kuncewiczowa 's 1945 novel The Stranger (New York, LB Fischer publisher), the city of Taganrog plays an essential role as a place of nostalgic happiness for the uprooted Polish musician and matriarch, Rose.

Coat of arms

This port city on the Taganrogsky Bay of the Sea of Azov can trace its history centuries back to the days when it was an ancient Greek outpost, even being mentioned by the historian Herodotus. However the modern city named Taganrog can be given a specific date of foundation - 12 September 1698. On this day Peter the Great decreed the creation of a naval base for the Azov Flotilla of the Black Sea Fleet. The emphasis of the port later shifted from a military to commercial function, especially in terms of the export of Russian grain.

In 1825 Emperor Alexander I was at his summer residence in Taganrog when he unexpectedly died. His sudden death and the resulting confusion about his successor led to the failed revolution of the Decembrists. On a happier note though, the city is even more famous for being the birthplace of perhaps Russia’s most famous playwright and short story writer - Anton Chekhov - and the house where he was born has survived and is now a museum.
