75m custom Damen support yacht ABEONA delivered

Damen Yachting’s largest support vessel, previously known as Wingman and YS 7512, has been delivered and officially christened yacht ABEONA . The 75m (246ft) custom-built shadow vessel was launched in October 2022, with sea trials taking place in December.

Following her successful sea trials, the yacht departed the shipyard’s Vlissingen facilities in the Netherlands at the end of January and has now arrived in Gibraltar. The builder has kept the owner’s identity confidential since announcing the project in September 2019, however sources suggest this will be the support yacht for Oceanco’s 127m (416ft) sailing yacht KORU , built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The 1,900 GT yacht features exterior and interior styling by the in-house design team at Damen yachting. She sports a striking gray hull contrasted with a sleek orange boot stripe, as well as Damen Yachting’s signature utilitarian profile with an open aft deck.

Boasting an impressive beam of 12 meters, yacht ABEONA is capable of carrying up to 45 people, including guests, crew and specialist staff, with ample room for storing large tenders and specialist toys. 

She is also equipped with a certified helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter to bridge the gap between land and sea, and is capable of a top speed of 18 knots. The yacht will also be responsible for carrying advanced equipment for emergency relief support.

With a name derived from ancient mythology as the Roman Goddess of outward journeys and safe passage, yacht ABEONA represents the 17th Damen yacht support vessel to see delivery to date.

Jeff bezos’ $500m yacht has a 246-foot support ship, lauren sanchez figurehead.

Much like Amazon, Jeff Bezos’ $500 million superyacht offers every bell and whistle imaginable, from A to Z.

The colossal, triple-masted Koru began its career serving the world’s third richest man this week, cruising the Mediterranean around Mallorca.

The 417-foot schooner first left Rotterdam in the Netherlands for sea trials in February. Dropping anchor in Mallorca put its jaw-dropping size on full display.

It also showed the extent of Bezos’ fleet: Not only did the Koru sail into harbor, so did its support vessel, Abeona, a mega-boat in its own right, the luxurious fast-launches used to move between the two — and aerial support in the form of his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez’s personal helicopter.

Sanchez also seemingly serves as the fleet’s mascot, with the Koru’s figurehead, a part of traditional large sailing ships, modeled after her.

The Koru is the world’s tallest sailing yacht. Its three huge 229-foot masts power it to 20 knots. It’s also the biggest billionaire’s yacht which can move under sail-power alone.

The masts are so tall that Dutch officials considered dismantling the 95-year-old Koningshaven Bridge to allow the vessel past the 131-foot span on its journey from the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam through Rotterdam to the North Sea.

That controversial plan was scrapped after local backlash, including residents being urged to toss eggs at Bezos’ “latest toy,”  the New York Times reported . The superyacht, previously known as Y721, was instead towed to a shipyard in Rotterdam, downstream of the bridge, without its masts.

Bezos, 59, and the bikini-clad Sanchez, 53, appeared ready for the summer as the pair soaked up the sun aboard Koru, a Māori word for loop or coil that symbolizes new beginnings — possibly a coy reference to their relationship.

Sanchez started secretly dating the Blue Origin founder in the summer of 2018. Bezos then announced in January 2019 he and his wife Mackenzie were divorcing after 25 years , while Sanchez finalized her split from husband Patrick Whitesell later that year.

Sanchez plays a critical role in the Bezos fleet: As a helicopter pilot, she was seen landing on the Abeona. She was also at Bezos’ side when he took the wheel of the Koru.

Koru was first seen under construction in 2021 at Oceano’s yard. The company is owned by a fellow billionaire, Oman’s Mohammed Al Barwani.

As many as 18 guests can enjoy the yacht’s three outdoor decks, including one with two pools. The vessel, which has a crew of up to 36, also boasts a cinema, meeting spaces and lounges,  Luxuo reported .

Every detail is designed for luxury, even down to the masts’ technology.

Bezos opted for high-tech “in-boom furlers,” which store the vast canvases at the bottom of the mast, above the deck. Each weighs nearly 2,000 pounds, but they allow his deck to be kept clear of ropes.

Clearing ropes out of the way maximizes entertaining space, and allows for a hot tub forward of the mainmast.

The yacht is also built for speed. Its three masts provide “one of the largest sail areas ever seen in yachting,”  according to SuperYacht Times .

The Koru’s original designer, and the identity of its captain, remain secret. Boat International noted : “With the elegant curve of the bow and a bowsprit, the lines are certainly classic, but we still have no idea which designer drew them.”

The Cayman Islands-flagged vessel also has engine power like most sailing yachts.

And while other billionaires measure yachts by size, Bezos’ is only the 24th largest.

However, since Koru’s masts rule out a helicopter deck, the billionaire commissioned a support vessel, Abeona, named for the Roman goddess of outward journeys.

In addition to a helipad, the 246-foot Abeona features an extra two staterooms for four guests and as many as 45 crew and support staff.

It’s the largest custom-built support vessel ever manufactured by Damen Yachting. On board in Mallorca were at least four jetskis, two fast launches, and an additional dinghy. Its heavy winch is capable of lifting a small submarine, although Bezos is not believed to have one thus far.

The “classic exterior lines” of Koru, are reminiscent of another billionaire’s boat: Eos, a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller, 81, who may have inspired Bezos after hosting him on the vessel.

Favored by megastars like Katy Perry and Bradley Cooper — who were Diller’s guests during 2019’s Google Camp in Sicily — the German-built Eos can accommodate up to 16 guests and 21 crew.

It was the largest private sailing yacht in the world when it was completed in 2006. Diller, chairman of IAC and Expedia, who is worth $3.9 billion, bought it three years later. Intriguingly, its figurehead is modeled on Diller’s wife Diane von Fürstenberg, the fashion designer.

But the $200 million, 305-foot schooner is now dwarfed by Bezos’ boat.

As Koru sailed in the Balearic Sea this week off the coast of Spain, Bezos’ boat symbolically surges past several other tech billionaires’ vessels – including Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s $80 million, 240-foot Dragonfly, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison’s, $160 million, 288-foot Musashi.

It will cost Bezos, 59, an estimated $25 million per year to operate Koru, but the world’s third-richest man isn’t likely to need a loan with his $140.6 billion fortune,  according to Forbes .

Bezos’ use of sailpower sets him apart from most billionaires, but others are seeking a hi-tech zero-carbon power source: a Japanese billionaire has reportedly commissioned the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht.

Germany’s Lürssen Yachts announced in March that they had a hydrogen-powered superyacht in advanced construction.

It declined to identify the future owner of the unnamed superyacht, but specialist publication FuelCellsWorks reported Japanese billionaire tech Yusaku Maezawa, worth an estimated $1.7 billion, commissioned the innovative effort.

Dubbed Project Cosmos, the 374-foot superyacht is designed by Apple’s legendary Marc Newson and was first unveiled in early March at Lürssen’s facility in Rendsburg, Germany.

Once completed as soon as next year, the vessel is expected to utilize emission-free fuel cell technology to generate power lasting up to 15 days while anchored or to travel as far as 1,000 miles at slow speeds.

Three other major shipyards, including in Italy and the Netherlands, are likely to launch their own hydrogen started outfitting newly constructed vessels with hydrogen fuel cells as of March 2022, with the first models reportedly expected in 2024.

Other megayachts expected to soon join Bezos’ Koru in the water include two Lürssen models, the 475-foot Luminance and the 400-foot Jag, and Feadship 821, a 389-foot offering from the Netherlands manufacturer.

But even those won’t best the biggest megayacht in the world, the 593-foot Azzam, which launched in 2013 after being commissioned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates who died last year.

Azzam, which means determination in Arabic, reportedly cost more than $600 million and is nearly 60 feet longer than the world’s second-largest yacht, the 533-foot Eclipse, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Those monster vessels are expected to be surpassed next year by REV, a 600-foot yacht under construction in Norway which will have space for 36 guests and 54 crewmembers, according to Boat International .

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

Lauren Sanchez, fiancée of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, landed a helicopter on his yacht in Italy on Wednesday. Sanchez, an Emmy-winning journalist, has been training to become a pilot for over a year. Eyewitnesses in Sardinia said she made three to four attempts to land the chopper before successfully touching down on Abeona, the $100 million support vessel for Bezos’ megayacht Koru.

News of the former anchor landing the chopper comes days after she shared a stunning picture of the Italian coastline on Instagram. According to the Daily Mail, Sanchez had also shared a picture from Koru, the largest sailing yacht ever built which is owned by her fiancé Jeff Bezos.

Sanchez landed the helicopter on Abeona, the smaller 250-foot yacht that accompanies Koru and features a helipad, along with scuba gear, a personal submarine, seaplanes, supercars and more.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have not publicly announced their engagement, but a source close to the couple confirmed their upcoming nuptials to CNN last month. The fact that Sanchez was spotted with a 20-carat rock on her finger gave further credence to these rumours.

Jeff Bezos’ Magnificent KORU Yacht and ABEONA Support Vessel

Lauren hopped in her billionaire fiancé's helicopter Wednesday off the coast of Sardinia, taking the controls and zipping around before successfully landing on the support yacht for the Amazon founder's superyacht.

Yes, Jeff's new $500 million superyacht , Koru, also has a $100 million support vessel ... it's named Abeona, the Roman goddess of voyages and departures, and it's got a helipad.

It looks like Lauren was practicing takeoff and landings, because she went up and down a few times.

Our sources say Lauren pilots this helicopter often, usually to airports where the couple hops on private jets, and this wasn't her first time landing on Abeona.

Lauren's parents are both pilots and she got her helicopter pilot's license from a flight school in Los Angeles ... she also had her own aviation company and now she's landing choppers on yachts parked off Italian islands.

Before Wednesday's takeoff and landing, we saw Lauren and Jeff returning from land on a souped-up speedboat as they continue their early honeymoon across Europe.

Jeff Bezos Is So Rich He Has A $100m ‘Support Yacht’ For His $700m Superyacht

This weekend, Jeff Bezos made a remarkable entrance into the harbour of Cannes aboard his new $700m megayacht. Spanning 417 feet, this vessel was accompanied by its support yacht, the Abeona, serving as a $100 million floating garage housing luxury cars, jet skis, and even a helicopter for Bezos’ fiancée.

It’s been a busy few weeks for  Jeff Bezos . Between wearing a  barely-there sheer polo  to the Miami GP, his  controversial $723m yacht  finally being seen  under sail for the first time , and construction pushing ahead for his new wife’s $270m mega-mansion , you’d be forgiven for thinking that the once world’s richest man — recently eclipsed by Bernard  Arnault  and  Elon Musk  — might want to take a few days off to decompress.

And that’s exactly what he’s done: arriving at the bustling Cote d’Azur this weekend, the Amazon founder floated into the harbour for some much-needed ‘me time’. However, what caught the eye of many onlookers was not his controversial but undeniably impressive $700m superyacht, but the rather more modest $100m companion craft that came along with him.

Named after the Maori term for “new beginnings,” Bezos’ controversial superyacht — the Koru —represents a more luxurious and opulent investment than any of us mere mortals could ever dream of. And yet, that hasn’t stopped him from keeping the Abeona — Koru’s 246-foot “support yacht” — on hand and stacked with all the toys a billionaire could need.

The largest support vessel ever built, the $100 million Abeona was launched in October of last year and is named after the Roman goddess of outward journeys. Stacked with supercars, motorbikes, smaller boats, and jet skis, the vessel’s raison d’etre is to accommodate Bezos’ fiancée — trained helicopter pilot Lauren Sanchez — as the Koru lacks its own landing pad.

This is far from being the first big spend that Bezos has made to accommodate his new boo, who made her own millions as an esteemed TV presenter and more recently as founder of ‘Black Ops Aviation’, the first female-owned aerial film and production company. Bezos’ $270m mega-mansion that is underway in Beverley Hills is also being developed with the aim of accommodating the soon-to-be-married couple.

We certainly don’t wish to imply that Sanchez is a demanding partner. In fact, the demand for similar support vessels is apparently soaring amongst the super-rich, who are always in need of additional space to store gadgets and guests alike. As well as hitting top speeds of 18 knots, the Abeona can comfortably accommodate four guests and an extensive crew of up to 37 members.

Sanchez may not be demanding but she’s certainly inspiring, at least in the eyes of her new beaux: in addition to the Koru’s Rolls Royce engines and array of sails, the ship’s bow features a polished wooden sculpture that, officially speaking, is intended to be reminiscent of a Roman goddess, but some have speculated bears a striking resemblance to Sanchez herself…

While details about the interior of Bezos’ staggering superyacht are as yet undisclosed, it isn’t hard to imagine to the kind of obscene luxury that must lay within its walls. With estimated annual running costs of over $30 million, it’s clear that as the Koru and its not-so-humble sidekick set sail, Bezos knows how to keep his extravagant dreams afloat while the rest of us are left treading water.

Damen Yachting has delivered the support vessel YS 7512, now known as  Abeona  after a Roman goddess of outward journeys and safe returns. The order for the vessel, supposedly from Jeff Bezos, but the information wasn’t confirmed, was received in 2019. The model features customized in-house design based on the YS 75 model in the Damen Yacht Support range. The project on behalf of the client was supervised by Wright Maritime Group.

In January Abeona arrived in Gibraltar after successful sea trials in December. The 75-meter vessel has a beam of 12 meters and a volume of approximately 1,900 GT. She features a helicopter hangar with a D14 value, has state-of-the-art environmental equipment and capacity for containerised emergency relief support equipment together with a wide range of specialized marine gear and tenders. The vessel will be able to accommodate up to 45 people including crew, specialist staff and guests.

She has a top speed of 18 knots and a range of 5,000 miles at 15 knots.

Damen Yachting , a division within the Damen Shipyards Group , was created in 2019. The division combines the pedigree and heritage of Amels yachts with a growing portfolio of SeaXplorer yachts and Yacht Support vessels.

Jeff Bezos, for example, is worth about $127 billion, according to Forbes , or more than enough to drop $75 million on a support yacht with a helipad for his girlfriend, because his $500 million superyacht doesn’t have one, according to   Luxury Launches .

The boat that looks more like the baby of Sailing Yacht A is named after the goddess of voyages and departures. In addition to a helipad its has a hangar that can carry a D14 value helicopter. It can comfortably accomodate 45 people, and can carry a host of toys, including water scooters, sea bobs, and even a submarine.

We’ll have to assume that the support yacht is where the real party is, should you ever find yourself hanging out with Jeff Bezos on his yacht(s). Tell him you’ll be with the submarine.

Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos was seen in the French Riviera in his $500million mega yacht at the Cannes Film Festival - which was flagged by his support yacht, which is effectively as a $75million floating garage for his jet skis, luxury cars and his fiancée's helicopter.

The world's most extravagant superyachts have been seen jostling for position at Cote d'Azur, with the likes of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos - the third richest man in the world according to Forbes - being seen gliding into the Cannes' harbour. Bezos has since decided to jet off for northern Italy .

His new yacht the Koru is named after the Maori word for 'new beginnings' and measures a whopping 417ft long.

But the impressive vessel does not travel alone - it is accompanied by a 'support yacht', the Abeona, which measures 246ft, and carries a slew of gadgets, machines and toys for Bezos and his entourage to enjoy.

These include a selection of supercars, motorbikes, smaller boats, jet skis, and a helicopter and landing pad for his fiancée.

The $75million support yacht codenamed YS 6512, which is the largest support vessel ever built, was launched to shadow the Koru in October last year.

Abeona, named after the Roman goddess of outward journeys, was built at a shipyard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, after a contract was signed with Bezos in 2019, according to Luxurylaunches .

A major reason that Bezos bought the shadow yacht was so that his fiancée Lauren Sanchez, who is a trained helicopter pilot, could land her Airbus ACH-135 when they were at sea - as the bigger Koru does not have its own landing pad, Luxurylaunches  reported.

Sanchez, 53, is the founder of Black Ops Aviation, the first female-owned aerial film and production company.

She became famous as an entertainment reporter in America and as a news anchor, and she won an Emmy award for her stint as an anchor for KCOP's 13 News.

Sanchez was married to businessman Patrick Whitesell from 2005 until their divorce in 2019. She has been with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos since 2019 and they got engaged earlier this month.

Demand for support vessels has risen significantly in the past few years amongst wealthy owners of superyachts.

These yachts are used to assist the main ship by giving space to store equipment (such as a helicopter), and provide accomodation for extra guests.

Abeona has a volume of 1900 tons and has a cruising speed of 16 knots and a top speed of 18 knots. At cruising speed the ships maximum range is 5000 nautical miles. 

Alongside all the toys and amenities, the Abeona can accommodate four guests in two staterooms and up to 37 crew members.

It's big sister Koru  is the world's second largest sailing ship, surpassed only by the somewhat underwhelmingly-named 'Sailing Yacht A', owned by Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.

Not much is known about the interior of Bezos' superyacht, but with a price tag of $500 million - and estimated running costs of roughly $25 million - it is sure to be dripping with luxury.

Turquoise Yachts and H2 Yacht Design join forces on 57m superyacht concept for "young buyer"

Turkish shipyard Turquoise Yachts and British studio H2 Yacht Design have collaborated on a new, 56.5-metre concept known as Voyage.

In keeping with her name, Voyage has "a hint of tough explorer" present in her exterior styling. "I also wanted her to possess unusually clean and crisp surfacing," explained Jonny Horsfield, founder of H2 Yacht Design, "From her unusual bow shape to the reverse curves of the hull back to the large open transom she is surprisingly radical in her design detailing."

Voyage is envisioned for a younger buyer with an active lifestyle. Key features include a large pool on the aft deck flanked by sofa seating, tender storage in an enclosed garage on the main deck and a touch-and-go helicopter pad on the bow. 

The sundeck is partially enclosed, with the aft portion accessible via sliding glass doors and arranged with twin sunbeds and a bar. An al fresco dining table and lounge space can be found on the main deck, while the swim platform is arranged with sunloungers and umbrellas for waterside sunbathing.

Accommodation is for up to 10 guests, including an owner's deck and suite with "sweeping panoramic views".

According to BOATPro , the Turkish shipyard has three yachts under construction, the largest of which is the 87-metre Project Vento which moved to outfitting in September 2023 .

A recent delivery by Turquoise Yachts – the 75-metre Infinite Jest – was the cover star of the May 2024 edition of BOAT International magazine.

Rebel Wagner group downed Russian chopper near city they now control: Report

The rebel wagner group, led by yevgeny prigozhin, has vowed to topple moscow's military leadership, saying he and his 25,000 fighters were "ready to die"..

A Russian helicopter was reportedly shot down in the Voronezh Oblast region which falls on the way to Moscow from the rebels-controlled city of Rostov-on-Don. In a video shared widely on the internet, smoke can be seen billowing from the debris lying in an area along the M4 highway in Pavlovsk, Voronezh Oblast.

Authorities in Voronezh have advised residents to stay off the main highway linking the two because a military convoy was on the road as the rebel mercenaries led by Wagner group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin swarmed over Rostov-on-Don to claim control of the military sites there.

Rostov-on-Don is home to the Russian military headquarters for the southern region and also oversees the fighting in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the mercenaries have taken control of Voronezh – around 500 km (310 miles)south of Moscow – the second city to fall to the rebel group.

Earlier today, Prigozhin, 62, said his forces, who have spearheaded much of Russia's offensive in Ukraine, had entered the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and controlled its military sites.

"We are inside the (army) headquarters, it is 7:30 am (0430 GMT)," Prigozhin said in a video on Telegram.

"Military sites in Rostov, including an aerodrome, are under control," he added.

Prigozhin said planes taking part in the Ukraine offensive "are leaving as normal" from the airfield, and called on Russians not to believe what they were being told on state television.

"A huge amount of territory is lost. Soldiers have been killed three, four times more than it says in documents shown to the top (leadership)."

The Wagner chief also said his forces had shot down a Russian military helicopter.
