Port Vauban
The largest marina in europe.
The old port of Antibes, stretching from what is now Porte Marine to Bastion Saint-Jaume, has been in use since ancient times - the bay at Saint-Roch was used by the Phoenicians as a commercial port and naval base. Its current layout dates back to the 1970s.
The port has a water area of approximately 62 acres, including a total berthing length of 4,200 linear metres, and a total capacity of 1501 places. The port welcomes all sorts of boats, from local 4m fishing boats (“pointu”) to 165m yachts, with an economy based on sailing and yachting and all related services: fishing, shipyards (careening and repairs), sailing clubs, crew agencies, etc.
Since 1986, its famous “billionaires’ quay” - quay of grand pleasure-boating- or Quai Camille Rayon, has been able to accommodate up to 19 superyachts (70m to 165m).
English can be heard in many of the pubs in the old town, giving the district a decidedly cosmopolitan feel.
Today, the Port is managed by Port Vauban 21.

Port Vauban Antibes – The largest marina on Cote d’Azur
Summary: Port Vauban is located in Antibes, between Saint Tropez and Monte Carlo, in the heart of Cote d’Azur. This natural harbour has a long history, dating from Roman times, later fortified by Sebastien Le Prestre, and nowadays home for more than 1642 yachts, making it the biggest port on the Mediterranean Sea.
At the beginning of the 20 th century, it served as a port for ships and as an airport for seaplanes, but the harbour that we see today started to be developed at the beginning of 1970. Sheltered behind the walls of the 16 th century city ramparts, it hosts a large variety of motorboats, yachts, and mega-yachts.
How to get there
If you decide to reach the marina by plane, the closest airports are Nice Cote d’Azur Airport or Cannes Mandelieu Airport , both situated at around 30 minutes' drive from the marina. For the customers occupying the berths on the IYCA, there is also a helipad, if you arrive by helicopter.
If you arrive by car, follow the ‘Antibes’ road signs and then ‘Antibes Port’.

Features and amenities
If you decide to arrive at Port Vauban by sea, a good orientation point to reach the marina is the Fort Carre , visible from 15 nautical miles, so it’s hard to miss it. The port is located at 43°35’4 N-007°08’E and once you get close to it, you can contact the port on Channel 9 to announce your arrival or if you need further assistance.
The port has 1642 berths, accommodating yachts from 4 meters up to 170 meters, and of course, depending on your yacht, depths from 2-5 meters to 7-8 meters for mega-yachts.
For safety reasons, the speed inside the basins and the access passage is limited to 3 knots, and also if your sailing yacht is equipped with a motor, you must use it inside the harbour.
In terms of amenities, in Port Vauban you can have access to:
- Electricity
- Laundry services
Next to the Harbour Master’s Office you can find the fuel station. During summer months it is open from 8:00 to 20:00 and it is selling both diesel and petrol.

Weather in Marina Grande
On the Côte d’Azur, the Mediterranean climate will welcome you with beautiful weather from May to October. Summers are dry and temperatures can reach highs of about 35 °C in July and August, but fortunately, the temperatures are generally bearable due to the influence of the sea and its cool breeze. Winters are pretty mild, even if the temperature can drop to 7 °C in January and February. Rainfalls are more abundant in the eastern area mainly between October and April, while on the western side they tend to decrease.
Sailing in this area, the winds will usually be calm and will blow from North-West, but close to Port Vauban the prevailing wind blows from East. In terms of sailing around this area, the captains should always take into consideration the intense north-westerly wind, the Mistral . It blows mainly in winter time but, occasionally, it blows on the coasts during the summer too. It can reach up to 185 km/h, however, in summer time is less intense and not as frequent as the southeast wind. As a bottom line, the best sailing season on Cote d’Azur is from May to September.

This classic resort town offers all the attractions of a summertime vacation destination: sunny days, sandy beaches, and a lively holiday ambience. Antibes has 23 kilometres of coastline with dozens of beaches overlooking the serene blue Mediterranean Sea. In the old town you should not miss two top attractions: the Archaeological Museum of Antibes and the renowned Picasso Museum .
Le Fort Carre it’s another landmark for Antibes. This 16th century fort with a unique star shape will amaze you with the panoramic views and scenic grounds.
After admiring the Old Town's atmospheric pedestrian lanes and ancient stone buildings and having a cold drink accompanied by a traditional dish, you should definitely go for a stroll along the ramparts. Overlooking the Baie des Anges, the path along the city's historic fortifications offers an exceptional panoramic view onto the Mediterranean Sea.

Getting Around
Uber works as a perfect option if you are in a rush, but keep in mind the high costs. A short trip will easily cost 15 euros, and going between ports will jump closer to 100 euros. Your best bet is getting the local train which runs the entire distance and frequently stops at the main stations.
More crew are starting to buy electric scooters, which are handy. Otherwise, keep your bike or skateboard handy. It gets hot in summer, and it’s a bit faster to get around. Antibes port is near to the old town but be prepared for a long walk if you want to hit up the beach bars on the other side. Wear comfortable shoes!
Expect to pay about 1.50 EUR for each minute distance in Uber (approx for consideration) whereas the single train ticket cost starts from 3,10 EUR. Bargain! (side note, you can buy snacks and wine on the train!)

Crew days off
All of the cities are coastal cities, therefore, all of them have beautiful beaches.
Stroll the laneways of old Town Antibes , find the beautiful markets and have lunch at a local cafe.
Visit Grasse , the city famous for the creation of perfums (30 minutes ride by car)
Hike Cap D’Antibes for sports lovers (2 hours Trekking) and find the Plage of Garoupe, a hidden public beach.
You can hire kayaks off the beach in Juan Les Pins.
Things to do in the surrounding city if you had a full day to explore
Visit Eze , a beautiful city to walk and explore (City between Nice and Monaco) The hike out there is popular, and you can have a chilled glass of rose at the end of it in the village!
Visit Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Monaco all of them are just 30-40 minute distance between them – if you are in any of these cities you will love to visit these neighbouring cities and explore. You can easily take the train and walk to your destination.
For something totally different- try Tandem paragliding in Greolieres .
Hire a car (or take the crew car if you can!) and drive out to the Gorges du Verdon . It’s a stunning spot just a few hour’s drive away where you can kayak, white water raft or do Via Ferrata.
If you take the train to San Remo , there is a cycle track that loops from the railway station to San Lorenzo and back. It’s 30 km in total and San Lorenzo is the perfect place for a nice lunch before you cycle back. You can easily rent a bike from one of the many places around the station carpark.
Take the crew car again, and go Paddleboarding at Lac St Cassien or the Esterels . The tourist offices have guidebooks for mountain biking, horse riding and local hiking trails.
Hiking, there are so many, some are close by, for example, a walk up a valley from Biot to Vallbone. Download the app called AllTrails for more ideas.
There is a forest canyon ropes courses and zip lines in Ville Neurve Loubet which make for a great day out. Also, plenty of bike trails winding through castles, and villages and offering something different from Antibes usual vibe.
If you are wintering in Antibes and want to get away, Isola or Auron , are ski stations less than 2.5 hours drive from Antibes.
Antibes Beaches
Being based in Antibes has its perks for you- there are so many beaches to explore. A word of caution though, during summer these are absolute hot spots, so get there early to claim your patch of “sand”
- Plage de la Gravette (aka the toilet bowl) is a sandy beach right in the heart of town, located right beside Port Vauban – it gets busy in summer because of its location.
- Plage de la Salis and Ponteil are two sandy beaches a short distance from old town Antibes – there are ‘snacks’ (food kiosks) located there, public toilets and a sailing club where you can hire kayaks, windsurfers etc.
- If you want a private beach, Royal Beach has a nice outlook on the sea and offers loungers and umbrellas for a fee.
- A bit further from Antibes, Plage de la Garoupe has a small public beach (super busy in summer) and private beach clubs at Plage Keller and Plage Joseph .

Best time to charter in Antibes
Summer is yacht charter season in Antibes. The warm temperatures and sun-soaked days offer prime conditions for cruising or beach-hopping. In Antibes, the summer season begins in late May and runs through September.
Peak charter season in Antibes is July and August. A favorite peak season event is the Jazz à Juan Festival, which is held each year in July outdoors overlooking the Med. During the summer season, there’s plenty to do: Antibes stylish beach clubs attract A-listers, the place to be and be seen; food and wine festivals each week, and plenty of cultural events throughout the season.
Antibes Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See
At the center of Antibes, the Vieille Ville, or “Old Town,” offers Antibes yacht charter guests a snapshot of antiquity. Stretching from the old fishing port to the Place du Safranier, the Old Town is dotted with quaint cobblestone streets, Medieval churches, the historic Château Grimaldi, an iconic ancient archway, and market stalls overflowing with fruits and vegetables brought in by the local harvest. Should you choose to end your day in this historic haven, do so by wandering along the embankment of Promenade Amiral de Grasse – it is home to the city’s raved-about horizon views.
Port Vauban
Considered Europe’s largest yacht harbor, one that even houses its own heliport, Port Vauban was designed with the world’s most extravagant yachters in mind. Just steps away from the Old Town, this natural harbor-turned-fortified-port, today, houses a lavish collection of visitors: like Russian oil businessman Roman Abramovich’s Ecstasea and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s Octopus.
Beaches of Juan les Pins
From the eastern Port Gallice to Vallauris-Golf Juan, in the west, the coast of Juan-les-Pins is characterized by idyllic beaches, private restaurants, local fishermen selling their daily catch and the calm, translucent waters of the enchanting Mediterranean Sea. Like the tourists and inhabitants that frequent them, the plentiful beaches of Juan-les-Pins each have their own reputation – two of which are Plage du Pont Dulys, which is known for its water sports amenities, and Grand Plage, famous for its views of both the distant Iles de Lerins and the Esterel mountains.
Charter a private yacht in Antibes
Antibes is a hub for charter yachts on the French Riviera, and you’ll find a selection of superyachts for charter at the International Yacht Club of Antibes (known as a favorite marina of the world’s elite). A private yacht charter is the perfect way to experience Antibes. Cruise to the Cap d’Antibes and explore the peninsula’s tucked-away beaches. Enjoy the sunset over the Med with evening cocktails on the beach.
Situated between Nice and Cannes, Antibes offers the perfect launch for a private yacht charter. Enjoy Antibes’ historic walled Old Town one day, before jetting off to Cannes during festival season. Monaco – known for its high-roller casinos and opulent eateries – and charming, upscale Nice are also favorite cruising destinations on an Antibes private yacht charter.

A New Partnership
“Burgess and Edmiston have joined forces with the Port Vauban to offer long-term guarantee of use contracts for berths on the Camille Rayon quay.
For Vauban 21, this partnership should enable the port’s commercial attractiveness to be enhanced internationally by drawing on the expertise and professional networks of Burgess and Edmiston, both of which are well-known companies in the yachting sector.

Transport & Accessibility
The underground car park at Pré aux Pêcheurs at the port is likely to be busy. Ensure you check the exit times for Antibes’ car parks to avoid lock ins! Other car parking can be found at Q-Park Jean-Marie Poirier and Q-Park Frères Olivier.
If you’re arriving by bus or train, bear in mind that public transport after 9pm is quite limited. You can check timetables for local Antibes buses at www.envibus.fr and the regional train schedules are found here: https://www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur
Taxis are available outside the Antibes train station.
The quays at Port Vauban and the entire Village exhibition site is on flat ground and therefore accessible for families with children in baby strollers, as well as persons with reduced mobility. As yet, I don’t know the availability of accessible toilets at the show – please note, that in the meantime there is one accessible free public toilet near the Ferris wheel (at the entrance to the underground car park), and Felix Café just inside the archway to old town has a ground-level accessible toilet.
