Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

Yachty Attire

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!

This Is It: A Yacht Rock Party How-To

Maybe one of these days some club in Houston will get it together and host a yacht rock night. Until then, you'll just have to host a party of your own. I asked J.D. Ryznar what ingredients were needed for the perfect smooth music bash.

"It has to take place in the afternoon, and you have to have all those tropical drinks, like Pi�a Coladas," he said. "[Yacht Rock co-creator] Hunter [Stair] and I got into a fight about what the best drink would be. If you're skewing '80s, I think Jack and Tab would be good, but I can't remember what the other one was. His drink was pretty funny too."

Vodka and Fresca perhaps? We would also suggest Riunite and Lancers wine, Lowenbrau and Michelob beer, and Harvey's Bristol Cr�me liqueur. For food, serve fondue , shrimp cocktail, brie, and some fresh pineapple, limes and coconuts. Lots of fruit. You want to put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up.

And since we are 50 miles from the Gulf, there's really no excuse not to have this on the water. Get a hold of a yacht . Or failing that, a beach-house. Or at the very least, a condo or hotel room near the ocean . You have to be able to smell the saltwater. Fresh water will not do.

Men must wear khakis and Topsiders . One man and only one man may rock a white captain's hat/ blue blazer / white turtleneck ensemble. This man is the Captain , and there can be only one. (Choose by direct vote or lottery.) Women should wear floral-print dresses with huge buttons, feathered hair and those big round sunglasses . Think Charlie's Angels .

You'll need plenty of CDs, and they must contain plenty of the songs already mentioned. Think you won't have fun at a party like that? Hah. That's what a fool believes. — John Nova Lomax

A yacht party is a fantastic change of pace from dinner at a restaurant or a backyard cookout. Yachting isn’t a common thing for a lot of people, so there’s a natural excitement built into the event, even if the boat never leaves the dock. All you have to do as the host is play into that vibe, and you’ve got yourself a successful event.

One of the best things you can do when inviting guests to a yacht party is to inform them in advance about general etiquette aboard a boat. Friends who are landlubbers will not know, for instance, that it’s customary to leave your shoes in a dock box before boarding a boat.

Tell them ahead of time that their feet will be on display so they can get a pedicure, buy a cool pair of socks or invest in a little toe jewelry to feel comfortable throughout the party. They’ll also appreciate the pro tip of wearing shoes that are easy to slide on and off without having to sit down and deal with laces or straps.

And, for yacht parties during the day, encourage your guests to dress for the sun. Have sunscreen on board to use, and offer helpful suggestions like bringing a hat, a light shirt to cover easy-burn spots like shoulders and the back of the neck, and perhaps linen pants or a sarong for legs that don’t see the sun too often. Polarized sunglasses also help stay comfortable throughout the day on board.

Think bigger-picture about how people should dress: if your yacht party is during the day, then your guests might bring a small bag of clothes for later; you’ll need a place on the yacht to put those bags. Your yacht party may extend into the night, which means there could be a big swing in the temperature, so encourage guests to bring clothing that can be layered on and off.

If the party will include the boat leaving the dock, then advise your guests about the golden rule of remaining upright: one hand for you, one hand for the boat. Yes, you can carry a plate of hors d’oeuvres or a cocktail in one hand, but whenever the boat moves, you always want one hand free to grab a rail, a handhold, or anything else you might need to steady yourself. Helping new boaters stay safe underway should be priority one!

In terms of hosting, think about serving a steady array of finger foods instead of a big, sit-down meal. The little stuff is easier to store and cook quickly, and it’s a better option to offer people a variety of foods if the boat is moving since some people may be a bit more sensitive than others.

Skip the things that come on skewers (those little sticks never end up in the trash, and they can poke bare feet if they end up on deck ). Instead, think about crudites, bruschetta bites, and boneless wings that leave no refuse behind.

Also, have soft drinks such as ginger ale and lemon-lime soda on hand to help soothe any bouts of seasickness . Ginger is another well-regarded remedy and can be served as a chewable or in a cup of iced tea.

Sometimes, yacht parties are themed, with everything from steel-drum players to belly dancers aboard for entertainment. Swim parties are, of course, a go-to favorite, as are “Under the Sea” parties with a seafood spread. You can go with a color, or a lack thereof, such as an all-white party, or encourage people to wear Hawaiian shirts for a Polynesian night .

Music is a must. So don’t forget to create a playlist to go with your theme. It’s hard to go wrong with boating standbys such as Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, and the Beach Boys. More than a few great singalongs have started with “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation or “Banana Boat (Day-O)” by Harry Belafonte.

Yes, that last suggestion is about as polar opposite as you can get from “Under the Sea,” but that’s the beauty of a yacht party. It can be anything you want it to be.

Best of all: you don’t need to own a yacht to throw a party on one. You can rent a yacht for a half-day or full-day and host your party on the rental instead! If you happen to be one of the lucky few who own a yacht, you can list it and rent it out to the large market made up of people daydreaming about their day out on a yacht or hosting their own yacht party.

How many people can fit on a party yacht?

Most of our private yachts are designed to legally carry a maximum of 12 people. This is because a yacht which carries more than 12 people it is considered a 'Passenger ship' and must comply with extensive SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.

Can you have more than 12 guests on a yacht?

At Boataffair, we do not typically rent out boats for more than 12 people. This is due to Boataffair’s focus on private, premier yachting.

We don't operate as a mass-market service; instead, we reserve our boats for boutique experiences for families, groups of friends, and couples. This is why most of our yachts are limited to 12 people or less.

Additionally, many of our motor yachts are designed to legally carry no more than 12 people, and often overnight stays allow for a maximum of 8-10 people.

You’ll want to keep in mind how many people can fit on a yacht before you start building your guest list. But don't worry, you can have wonderful birthday parties on our yachts with less than 12 people!

Ideas For A Cheeky Tarts & Vicars Theme Party

There’s a famous scene in Bridget Jones’s Diary where Bridget turns up to a party dressed as a Playboy bunny and, upon seeing everyone dressed in smart outfits, politely enquires ‘where are all the other tarts and vicars?’ Her costume, and indeed the title, should give you some indication as to what this theme is about.

A tarts and vicars party is where all the guests and the host of the party dress up as either a tart or a vicar. Tart is British slang for a woman who dresses in revealing outfits, and a vicar is of course a religious church leader.

Combining these two elements for a party is quite a throwback to a Britain that was less politically correct and to a time when silly, yet sexually suggestive, TV shows and movies were made, like Benny Hill and The Carry On Series.

So let’s dive in and discover more about this very British theme party.

When and where to host a tarts and vicars party

In my experience, this theme is best suited to a birthday party, but it can actually work for virtually any occasion. Obviously this is an adult themed party, so no hosting for a twelve-year-old’s bar mitzvah! But for most parties at most time of the year, you can use this as a main theme.

Where to host this theme party depends entirely on your budget and how many guests you intend to invite. The party in Bridget Jones was a garden party, so why not host it there? Or, for extra authenticity, you can host it in a church hall if they let you! Better still, a venue that was once an old church.

What to wear to a tarts and vicars party

Dressing up for this party needn’t be a complicated affair. Women typically wear revealing outfits, with red and black being the leading colour theme.

Fishnet stockings are always a good idea as are high heels or knee high boots. I think at least one guest has to recreate the costume Bridget Jones wore, as the scene is so iconic.

This is just a guide outfit idea, but generally any revealing outfit will work for those attending as tarts. Don’t forget to lay on a good amount of make up too, especially the lipstick.

Guys just need to dress in anything related to the clergy, so all black for a catholic priest or white flowing gowns for a protestant vicar.

Remember, this is a theme invented in the 1970s in Britain. We live in the 21st century now so there’s nothing to stop guys dressing up as tarts and women as vicars.

Also, there’s no need to stick to the guidelines above so instead, for example, you can dress in a naughty nurse outfit, a nun with fishnet stockings or even combining the two and have a vicar outfit with knee-high boots!

For me, this theme is all about being fun and a bit flirty, so embrace it!

What food & drink should be served

This sort of theme is well suited to buffet and nibbles being laid on. As this is a British theme, why not lay on the same food traditionally served at a party buffet? So, cocktail sausages, mini pork pies, potato salad, mini sandwiches, crisps (potato chips), mini cakes and biscuits (cookies) will all work well.

For drinks, I would just operate a Bring Your Own Bottle policy, as this normally works best for these types of parties.

I think it is better to just let guests eat and drink what they want and when they want from the buffet table as opposed to a more formal sit down arrangement. Of course have tables and chairs, so people can sit, eat and chat but a formal sit down isn’t really appropriate for this theme

Party activities

There definitely has to be a prize for the best dressed guests. The best tart and the best vicar, naturally! This will encourage guests to be more creative in their costume styles and make some really great photos to remember the night.

Speaking of great photos, why not set up a photo booth? Make sure you have props related to the theme like giant crosses, bibles, makeup, and so on. General props work well too, like silly hats and inflatables. You can of course be a lot more imaginative with your props to match the adult nature of the theme, but I’ll leave them up to your, err… imagination. I think a confession box themed photo booth would be a brilliant idea too.

As with most costume parties, the music is completely subjective and dependent on the hosts and guests tastes. However, as this is a British theme and one from the 1970s, maybe you can play some music from the era? 70s disco will go down well at a party like this, for sure.

You can also have fun interludes where you play the Benny Hill theme and have all the vicars chase the tarts round the venue in comedy fashion.

So there you have it. A party where you dress up as a tart or vicar is certainly at the more unusual end of the costume party scale, but it’s no less fun. Sure, some may view it as a little politically incorrect these days, but to me, it’s just a bit of harmless fun.

When I had three children, I loved birthday parties. I went all out. I’m not kidding, I spent hours and hours making decorations, planning the decor, and designing invitations. Now I have six kids, and birthday parties are the worst. Not the worst, I take that back, but they aren’t as fun as they used to be. These days, the invitation is usually a text and the party is just a free-for-all at my house with some cupcakes on a table for kids to grab as they please. I’m not even sure I clean the bathroom first.

If you’re a nice mom and want to do something for you children and their friends on birthdays, what are your options? I went ahead and did a little research for you on 10 places in our area (though there are surely more) that might interest you:

• 360 Gymnastics: Options start at $120 for 90 minutes for 15 children. There’s an extra fee for additional children. What’s included? Entertainment (for an added fee you can add elements to your party like an extra blow-up apparatus or turn your party into a Nerf war), set up (including tablecloth), and a space for parents to hang during the party. • As You Like it Cakes: This bakery in Lewiston offers birthday parties that start at $50. The basic party provides you with a space for two hours; you provide activities and purchase desserts. For $75, 10 guests get to decorate a cupcake and receive a decorating apron to keep (additional children/guests who decorate are $5 each). The host can bring in decorations, drinks (non-alcoholic) and ice cream. Private parties in which the shop is closed to clients must be held after 6 p.m. or on a Sunday and costs another $30. • Bonkers Indoor Play Center: Moscow is home to Bonkers, an indoor space that’s available for birthday parties. Parties start at $89 which gives you a private room for one hour to eat cake and open gifts, but the kids can play all day. There is a space for toddlers as well as older kids and several play options (a play structure, play centers, etc). The price covers five children, but more can be added for an additional fee. Hosts literally do nothing but book the party and bring a cake. Bonkers takes care of invitations, set-up, decorations, plates, napkins and drinks. For additional fees, you can add more food or bring your own (nut-free) food to enjoy. To book, call (208) 596-4320.
• LC Ice Arena: $98 gives you access to a private party room at the ice skating rink in North Lewiston for 90 minutes for 10 children plus the birthday guest of honor. Skate rental is included in the price, and hosts are free to bring cake and decor for the party room.
• Lancer Lanes in Clarkston has an arcade package that includes 30 game tokens per guest, unlimited soda, and a 500-point game card for the birthday child. That costs $10 per child. A bowling package is also $10 per child and includes two hours of bowling, shoe rental, unlimited soda, and a 500-point game card for the arcade. To book call ( 509) 758-6731.
• Zeppos in Pullman offers a package for $13 per bowler. It includes two hours of bowling, shoe rental, balloons, a stuffed toy for the birthday guest of honor, soda and water and $5 arcade game cards per guest. To book, call (509) 334-7101.
• Art Uncorked at the Fourth Wall Art Gallery: Children's birthday parties are a bit different than the regular private parties. $150 covers 10 children and a dozen cupcakes from As You Like it Cakes. Each additional child is $10. The birthday child gets to  pick the artwork, or, with at least two weeks’ notice, a custom piece of art will be created for everyone to paint. • Wild at Art: For a different spin on a painting party, check out this paint-your-own-pottery shop in Moscow (there’s also a Lewiston location). There isn’t a base price for a birthday party, it all depends on what piece of ‘naked’ pottery the guests choose to paint. Prices for pieces start at $5. Hosts can budget by choosing what guests will paint. Food, decorations and drinks aren’t provided, but are welcome if you’d like to bring anything. Typically, parties last about 90 minutes but can last as long you’d like. Call Mark at (208) 669-2425.
• Asotin County Family Aquatic Center: Packages for this Clarkston indoor and outdoor aquatic play space start at $100. For that, you get a small party room, themed decorations, indoor admission for 15 party guests and a T-shirt and card for the birthday guest of honor. If you’d like to add party guests, there is an additional fee per guest. You can also upgrade your party to utilize all the outside fun, add soda, cake, even party favors for additional fees. • Palouse Discovery Science Center: Did you know we have a children’s science museum in our area? The PDSC is located in Pullman and not only can you visit for an afternoon, you can also schedule to have a birthday party here. $150 includes admission for 12 guests and one parent each, 90 minutes in a party room, a 30-minute science activity (you can choose from a number of themes), $10 credit toward the gift shop, and plates, utensils, napkins and tablecloths. Not to mention an incredible experience for each guest. Bring your own food, beverage and cake, and you’re set. Call (509) 332-6869 for booking.
• Do something outside and create your own fun. Scavenger hunts in Lewiston’s Pioneer Park, the University of Idaho Arboretum in Moscow or (insert your favorite city park here) would be fun. Go to Hell’s Gate State Park in Lewiston and, after playing at the playground, visit the museums on site. Make food yourself, order pizza or have your party catered by a local restaurant or catering company.
