A General Description of Motor Yacht LIMITLESS

From the Lurssen Yachts yacht builder in Germany the LIMITLESS is 96 m 316 (ft) in length. Christened by 1997 her interior decoration showcases the realisations of Tim Heywood / Francois Catroux. Superyacht LIMITLESS is able to accommodate up to 10 people with 20 professional crew. She is able to reach a maximum speed of 25 knots.

Motor yacht LIMITLESS was built for Les Wexner, an American businessman who gained his success from being the chairman and CEO of the Limited Brands corporation best known for its brand Victoria's Secret. LIMITLESS has several unique features including an F-16 joystick control at her helm, a "dolphin cam" in her bow, and lights encompassing her waterline. Wexner reportedly considers the interior his private domain and will not release photos to the media.

Construction & Design of Luxury Yacht LIMITLESS

Lurssen was the naval architect involved in the professional vessel composition for LIMITLESS. Also the company Lurssen and Bannenberg Designs Ltd successfully worked on this venture. Interior designer Tim Heywood / Francois Catroux was commissioned for the overall interior ambience. Germany is the country that Lurssen Yachts completed their new build motor yacht in. After the formal launch in 1997 in Bremen she was afterwards delivered on to the proud new owner following sea trials and testing. The core hull was crafted from steel. The motor yacht superstructure component is fabricated mostly using aluminium. With a width of 12.41 metres or 40.7 ft LIMITLESS has beamy internal space. A reasonably deep draught of 4.39m (14.4ft) selects the number of certain harbours she can enter, depending on their individual characteristics. She had refit improvement and alteration work completed in 2004.

Engineering And The Crusie Speed That M/Y LIMITLESS is Able To Achieve:

The 3616 DITA engine installed in the motor yacht is produced by CATERPILLAR. LIMITLESS is propelled by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship creates 7265 horse power (or LIMITLESS kilowatts). She is fitted with 2 engines. The total power for the boat is therefore 19890 HP or 14636 KW. With respect to stabalisers she uses Flume Tank.

With Superyacht LIMITLESS There is The Following Accommodation Layout:

Providing volume for a maximum of 10 visiting passengers staying on board, the LIMITLESS accommodates them comfortably. The boat carries approximately 20 professional crew members to maintain and sail.

Quick Enquiry

"I once had a client who told me, “I will put your name on the side of my boat if it’s good, but if the boat is not good, your name will appear three times as big.” We were brought up with the sense that it is a very personal obligation for the family when we sign a contract to deliver a yacht that the client expects. I cannot go to a client and say “One of my guys made a mistake.” He would say “Is he Mr. Lürssen, or are you Mr. Lürssen?” But a successful delivery is also a great reward. I take the relationships of my clients very personally." - Peter Lürssen of Lürssen Yachts (courtesy SuperYachtTimes)

The 96 metre Limitless was a pioneering yacht for Lurssen with her diesel-electric propulsion system, a novelty in 1997. She was conceptualised by the office of the late Jon Bannenberg, who had also been responsible for the design of superyacht Carinthia VI – which in turn inspired the design of Limitless. During the planning of Limitless, the owners of Carinthia VI also ordered a new yacht, which became Carinthia VII designed by Tim Heywood, who himself had worked at the Bannenberg office for many years. Limitless features an interior designed by Francois Catroux, who was also responsible for the beautiful interior of another Lürssen giant, EOS. Limitless, at the time of her construction in 1997, was the largest privately owned yacht in America.

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Beyond the horizon

It’s easy to think of the superyacht industry being behind the times when it comes to greener technologies, but actually history shows nothing could be further from the truth.

Tick tock. It’s a universal expression of impatience that implies we need to hurry things up, and it seems appropriate as a start point for a piece that, essentially, is about time. Time is often cited as the last great luxury, because many of those who are considered wealthy may be cash-rich but they are often time-poor. Superyachting for most owners has always been less about showing off and more about spending precious time with family and friends. But parallel to this is the growing worry that time is running out for us as a species when it comes to climate crisis and the environment.

With this in mind, I’m going to take just a few minutes of your time to show that the yachting industry isn’t only just waking up to the tick-tock pressure of environmental crisis – in fact, it has a history of pushing boundaries that don’t follow other sectors but rather mirror or lead them. While it’s true that superyacht builders are making headway with new, pioneering projects that speak to a reduced-emission future, this isn’t just a recent development. Indeed, it’s interesting to see how the niche superyacht segment has in many regards kept pace with the global automotive industry – a sector that has seemingly unlimited funds for investment and development compared to our relative cottage industry.

Beyond the horizon

Limitless Photo: SuperYacht Times

So let’s step back in time. It’s 1997, and Toyota is releasing the very first Prius hybrid onto the Japanese domestic market, just as Lürssen launches the 96-metre Limitless . The yacht breaks new ground for the nascent superyacht industry, using a diesel-electric drivetrain that it could be argued heralds the advent of hybrid and electric yachts. The Prius goes global in 2000, and while the pace of development in yachting is necessarily longer – superyachts just aren’t built at the rate or volume of cars – design and engineering teams are already working on more advanced solutions across the fleet.

In 2005, Lürssen’s 90-metre Ice (ex- Air ) is delivered after a multi-year design, development and build programme. The yacht is the first to feature electric azimuthing propellers as its drive system, powered by generators, rather than using conventional diesel engines direct-driving propellers on the end of shafts – in effect, another step toward separating the means of propulsion from the means of producing power, which will allow us to look to alternatives to fossil fuels.

In 2008, when Tesla’s very first electric car is launched, the Ferretti Group unveils the Mochi Long Range 23, a 23-metre yacht designed with a super-efficient hull and a true hybrid drivetrain that allows four different modes of operation, from conventional diesel drive to running solely on batteries. It is the first yacht to be awarded Italian classification society RINA’s new Green Star Clean Energy and Clean Propulsion notations. The following year, Azimut launches the Magellano range with the 74, which features a super-efficient ‘dual-mode’ hull that offers efficient cruising at displacement speeds as well as at a faster semi-displacement speed; this is followed in 2010 by the 15.6-metre Magellano 50 which is offered with an Easy Hybrid system for zero-emission electric cruising at up to 8 knots, making clean cruising available to boaters across the spectrum.

Beyond the horizon

Magellano 43

At the other end of the scale, Silicon Valley graduate Bill Joy had spent the early 2000s investing heavily in the development of fuel cell technology, hoping to make his 58-metre sailing yacht Ethereal – which launches in 2009 – the world’s first to feature hydrogen fuel cells (a good six years before the automotive sector managed to launch a car with a fuel cell). Although the tech isn’t quite mature enough by the time the yacht is delivered – she was fitted instead with a bank of batteries that could be swapped out when fuel cells were viable – she not only becomes perhaps the first true hybrid superyacht but has also helped accelerate the development of fuel cells, which now feature in clean public transport solutions and which are starting to appear in the next generation of superyachts under construction.

Take Lürssen’s 114-metre Project Cosmos, for example, which had her technical launch in March 2023. Under construction for a Japanese client who is a self-confessed technology nut, the yacht will feature fuel cells that will allow up to 1,000 miles of zero-emission cruising or up to 15 days emission-free at anchor. “My grandfather built the world’s first motorboat in 1886,” Peter Lürssen has observed in the past. “My dream is to be the first to build a yacht without a combustion engine.”

For sure, times are changing and the attitudes of some owners to make a difference are becoming even more prevalent in their children. It’s true for all sizes and types of yacht, from Jeff Bezos’s new leviathan which draws on sail power to mitigate its reliance of engines to yachts at the production end of the scale that are moving ever further toward efficiency over power. “The European market is definitively more long-range, green, quiet and vibration-free,” Ewen Foster, Chief Technical Officer at Sunseeker , told me recently. “The ability to charter and resale are a concern for clients no matter how rich they are, in that their boat might not be attractive second hand.”

Beyond the horizon

Ethereal Photo: Beverley Wellington

“It’s also the children and their pressure,” he continued. “We might see a gentleman all gung-ho wanting the fastest boat possible and wanting their name on it, but their children say they are going to chain themselves to the side of the boat so it can’t be used, that it’s not ecologically sound and they don’t want to be associated with it. I think the younger generation do have a big influence on the type of boat an owner will buy – and whether it’s direct influence from children or whether it’s perceived, people do care about being green.” Time, for sure, is running out when it comes to changing our ways as a species, but the history and the evolution of the superyacht industry shows that as a sector we have not, as so many might claim, been behind the times – it is replete with the foresight and futuristic technologies owners, designers and shipyards not only embrace, but often help pioneer.

It’s fair to say that superyachting – just like every other industrial sector – still has a long way to go, and in no way do I claim we have time to sit back and rest on our laurels. But it’s important to realise that we don’t play second fiddle to other sectors, and we don’t merely react to what’s going on in society like a recalcitrant teenager being told to go do their homework. The superyacht industry is a vibrant hotbed of innovation and advancement, where dedicated engineers can draw on the enthusiasm and resources of passionate owners to bring complex ideas to fruition to the benefit of all, and I take encouragement from the fact that some of these aspects are finally being recognised by the media, and hopefully by the wider public. It’s about time.

Who was on superyacht that sank off Sicily?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.

Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.

Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.

Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.

yacht limitless superyacht times

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.

Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.

He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.

Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.

The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Angela Bacares

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.

The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley Pic: Hiscox/ Linkedin

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas

The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.

Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.

Tributes have been paid to a chef whose body was recovered after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily , as rescuers fear six people are still trapped inside the wreck.

Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working on the Bayesian superyacht, was found by the Italian coastguard near the sunken boat.

A friend of Mr Thomas, who asked to remain anonymous, said the yachting community has been saddened by his death.

She told The Independent: “He was a one-of-a-kind special human being. Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon.

“I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job.”

She added: “He will be smiling and laughing.”

Among those unaccounted for are technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, as well as Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Four bodies were found on the shipwreck on Wednesday but are yet to be identified.

Italian emergency services pictured heading to the scene

The body of Mr Thomas was recovered on Monday.

His friend Gareth Williams told the BBC: “I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.”

Another friend, Eli Fuller, told the outlet Mr Thomas was “friends with everybody”, “always positive” and “sought after” in his profession.

Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time on Monday as the area was hit by a storm.

Of the 22 passengers and crew onboard, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

More of the yacht’s rescued crew members were named by the Italian Coastguard on Tuesday, with Leo Eppel and South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken all confirmed as having been on board.

Mr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of conducting a massive fraud relating to the 11 billion US dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard. The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

The location of Sicily where Bayesian sank

The Financial Times reported that Mr Bloomer appeared at trial as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, while media reports suggest the pair are close friends.

A spokesperson for Morgan Stanley said the bank was “shocked and saddened” while Clifford Chance said it was a “tragic incident”.

The former school of Mr Lynch’s daughter has said its “thoughts are with their family and everyone involved.”

A spokesperson for Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said: “We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.”

Ed Llewellyn, British ambassador to Italy, met some of the survivors of the sinking at a hotel.

Banker Jonathan Bloomer

Ayla Ronald, a New Zealand national working at Clifford Chance, survived the ordeal.

Her father Lin Ronald confirmed to the Telegraph that she had been invited aboard as a thanks for assistance in Mr Lynch’s recent court case.

Another survivor, British tourist Charlotte Emsley, told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, to stop her from drowning.

Charlotte and Sofia were treated in hospital, as was Sofia’s father, James Emsley.

Stephen Chamberlain (Cambridgeshire Police/PA)

In a separate incident, Mr Lynch’s co-defendant in his US fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

In a statement released through Cambridgeshire Police, Mr Chamberlain’s family said: “Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend.

“He was an amazing individual, whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible.”

Superyacht feds say was seized from Russian oligarch sails into San Diego

A small Navy boat sprays water in its wake next to a massive yacht

A $300-million superyacht the U.S. seized from an alleged Russian oligarch in Fiji last month sailed into San Diego Bay on Monday morning.

Known as the Amadea, it is 348 feet long and features a helipad and swimming pool. The Department of Justice says it was owned by Suleiman Kerimov, a gold investor Forbes says is worth $14.5 billion .

It’s not clear how long the seized boat will stay in San Diego. Justice officials said the plan is to eventually sell it off.

“The successful seizure and transport of Amadea would not have been possible without extraordinary cooperation from our foreign partners in the global effort to enforce U.S. sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war in Ukraine,” the Department of Justice said in a statement Monday.

The U.S. sanctioned Kerimov, who was accused of money laundering related to the purchase of French villas, in 2018. The European Union sanctioned him in March 2022, the Associated Press reported.

That same month, the Department of Justice created Task Force KleptoCapture to enforce the sanctions the U.S. and its foreign allies imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine.

A massive yacht sails with a bridge in the background

Two months later, on May 5, the Department of Justice announced it had seized the Amadea in Fiji. “Today’s action should make clear that there is no hiding place for the assets of individuals who violate U.S. law,” Atty. Gen. Merrick Garland said that day.

After winning a court battle in Fiji — there was a dispute over the yacht’s actual owner — the U.S. sailed the ship from the South Pacific island on June 7 .

The superyacht stopped in Hawaii last week before heading into San Diego, sailing under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge on its way to its berth Monday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
