The best motor yachts of 13 meters
Latest trends in midsize segment — open, coupe and flybridge
We continue to survey the nominees for the award European Powerboat of the Year. We already talked about boats up to 7 meters from 7 to 10 m and from 10 to 13. In this article we will focus on motor yachts over 45 feet (13.7 m). When evaluating boats in this category, the competent jury took into account such factors as their suitability for long cruises.
Absolute Navetta 48
Thanks to the ingenious design of 14.93-meter Navetta 48 exceeds the comfort of a boat of larger size. The add-in got panoramic Windows, and in each cabin, and even the bathrooms have large portholes. In combination with the interior in grey-beige tones of the room was very bright.
On the spacious flybridge placed deck chairs for sunbathing and cocktail area, while there is still a lot of places. In the lounge there is a dining area and a full galley with plenty of cabinets and drawers. On the lower deck are three large staterooms, including a master Suite owner.

Azimut Atlantis 51
The boat is well blended into a single style and concept line of Atlantis sports shape, a semi-open salon and good rates of speed. The upper deck is exclusively reserved for guests. In the bow, Azimut Atlantis 51 traditionally located the sunbeds, aft — bathing platform and the saloon has a comfortable sofa and a table.
A galley with a dining area moved to the lower deck, forming a cozy cabin. The room owner is equipped with a restroom with a spacious shower and two guest cabins share a common bathroom.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 47
Developed by Andreani Design Swift Trawler 47 at first sight inspires a sense of security. The boat was pretty roomy. On the lower deck are three double cabins and the salon can easily be transformed into another guest room. Living harmoniously combined with the galley, which is the post of captain.
Rear cockpit separated from the passenger compartment of a translucent sliding door. Wide door opening serves as a smooth transition from the internal space to the outside, so a big company can easily communicate, stay on the sofas in the salon and cockpit. The spacious flybridge is equipped with an additional galley at the client’s request can also be equipped with extra beds for sunbathing.

De Antonio Yachts D46 Open
New D46 Open is a combination of high performance and unique style. One of the main features of 13.9-metre boat was the use of outboard motors, which are hidden under beds in the aft. The manufacturer offers yachts with a set of from two to four engines, the total maximum power can reach 1200 HP
The client may choose from three plan underdeck spaces — with one, two or three cabins. In the first two embodiments, the empty space forms the galley and dining area.

Galeon 640 Fly
Galeon 640 Fly, with its hinged sides in the cockpit can rightly be called a boat-transformer. Of course, the technology itself is not new, but it is used on boats much larger in size. At the expense of the boards can increase the space that can be used as a kind of bar on the balcony.
But the characteristics of the boats don’t stop there. Which are just like cut and split the table in the lounge in the bow that converts easily into a sunbathing area, and a spacious flybridge with galley and bar.
Below deck, things are no less interesting. The owner’s stateroom is located at the widest part of the hull and occupies the entire space from side to side. There’s plenty of room, there are two large Windows, multiple closets for clothes and things. Cabins guests, though smaller in size, but was also light and airy.

We had a chance to step aboard earlier this month as the Magellano flagship made its entrée into the North American market at the Miami International Boat Show.
As much as I loved the exterior, it was the interior that really got my attention. For that, Azimut brought in artist, architect, and now yacht designer Vincenzo de Cotiis. The Milan-based creative is best known for his terranean projects that mix modern design elements with a historical flair. On the 30M, he did not need to reach that far back into the past to find inspiration.
The interior has a 1980s vibe imbued by pastel colors throughout and irregular shaped, mirrored surfaces. But this bit of nostalgia is mixed with the inside-out aesthetic that is so prevalent in yachting right now, with near sole-to-ceiling windows in the salon and very low furniture that serves to amplify the open-concept layout. Glass defines the interior, with 750 square feet used across the vessel.
Another touch that I can’t remember seeing on a yacht before was the use of what de Cotiis and Azimut are calling “artistic fiberglass.” The aquamarine material can be seen throughout the interior, mostly on countertops and somehow makes strands of raw fiberglass look pretty. It’s a nod to the Brutalist aesthetic that has become so hot among a certain home buyer in recent years.
Some of the 30M’s best attributes are found below the waterline. The vessel has a Dual Mode hull, which makes it efficient both in displacement and semi-planing modes, delivering 15 to 20 percent reduced fuel consumption compared to traditional hard-chine planing hulls. The 100kWh lithium batteries also let the boat stay at anchor for four hours without running the engine and eight hours at night. The result is no noise and zero emissions.
Back outside, the 30M has a lovely bow-deck lounge with the expected lounge seating and carbon-fiber poles for the sunshade, as well as a roomy work area for the crew up front, with stainless-steel everything.
But the marquee outdoor deck is the flybridge. That space handles all dining duties with a table for 11—another nod to the outside-in concept and the new ways in which owners use their yachts. A bar for three to port exhibits high levels of fit and finish with its stainless inlays, though I would trade out the bare teak seats for something more comfortable and perhaps more stable.
A grill at the aft end of the deck also signals Azimut’s intent to make its new flagship popular in the U.S. market. With such delightful design bona fides, there’s no reason why it won’t thrive here.

Design-Driven: The Azimut Grande 27 Metri
- By Phil Draper
- Updated: December 18, 2017
The newest generation of Azimut Grande yachts melds edge and elegance, muscle and mellow. Longtime Azimut stylist Stefano Righini’s exteriors are getting sharper and more aggressive with each new season. At the same time, interiors are getting softer and gentler, thanks to Achille Salvagni’s delicate touch. The builder’s 27 Metri is a perfect example. She’s an 87-foot-10-inch raised pilothouse model with a full-beam, main-deck owner’s stateroom — replacing the Azimut 88, a conventional flybridge design. The 27 Metri’s look and layout are proving popular: The first 10 hulls sold prior to her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
Outside Spaces
UP FRONT It seems that every conceivable square inch of outside space is utilized on the 27 Metri. Take the flares of her snub-nose bow and squared-off stems, for example. These spaces do more than create distinctive personality; they deliver functionality. The yacht’s forward seating and sun pad are actually tiered, almost terraced, a layout that is not possible unless the space is properly proportioned.
The other end of the 27 Metri has a similarly smart design. The aft deck connects with the main salon through clean-frame, aft-deck doors, and a few steps down, the garage door opens to create a teak beach.
UPSTAIRS Ashore, I love a good bar. And to be honest, on the right (or wrong) occasions, I don’t mind a bad bar. But bars on yachts? Normally, I don’t like them. Never have.
And yet, the spot I found I wanted to linger in aboard the 27 Metri was the flybridge bar. The view was great, and because an optional opening hardtop protected the bar area from the full scorch of the early morning Côte d’Azur sun, the place proved perfect for scribbling my notes while pondering just how pleasant the world could be on such mornings afloat.
Inside Spaces
PERFECTIONIST Salvagni is known for fluid lines and large radii. His interior design style manages to be both now and then, and that’s a good thing. The 27 Metri’s interior, just like that of Azimut’s new 35 Metri, is the best of clichés: timeless and elegant, but still front-cover, Fashion Week trendy.
Probably most extraordinary is the balance created among light, dark and midtones. If I were forced to choose one overarching adjective, it would be “calm.” Our test boat fused light, matte walnuts; dark, high-gloss mahogany; and whitened oak soles, along with mirrors, contrasting lacquers, leathers and brushed bronzes.
Probably most extraordinary is the balance created among light, dark and midtones. If I were forced to choose one overarching adjective, it would be “calm.”
Beyond the color palette, Salvagni’s studio drew much of the free-standing furniture and assorted fittings throughout the yacht, including several standard lamps. The pieces are exclusive to Azimut yacht owners — which should make plenty of landlubbers jealous considering Salvagni is already well-known beyond yachting circles. He has branded atelier collections and opened high-end stores in New York, London and his home city of Rome.
CONNECTIONS Forward of the open-plan salon and dining area are two mirrored doors. The one to port conceals a long, slender pantry and galley, while the one to starboard connects with the main-deck lobby, day-head, staircases and the door to the owner’s stateroom. Both the pantry and lobby have doors to the side decks too.
OWNER’S TREAT The main-deck owner’s stateroom is down three steps from the main-deck lobby. Picture windows dominate the stateroom on both sides, and though a horizontal framing breaks the windows where a rubbing strake would normally be, the glass extends from sole to almost ceiling height. Look at the photo at left, and you can see just how big the windows are. Waking up in bed with those views, I thought, would make me never want to get up.
DOWNSTAIRS Stairs to the lower deck spiral down and to the right, then to the left, in a design reminiscent of a double helix. It’s quite art deco, actually, which is probably why I particularly like it.
Owners can opt for three or four staterooms belowdecks. Our test boat, Hull No. 2, had four. The two doubles amidships had inboard-facing berths, and the two twin-berth staterooms forward had aft-facing berths. All were en suite. I liked the twins because the berths were presented asymmetrically, with the outer one splayed by 15 to 20 degrees. The layout made the stateroom feel more welcoming than traditional twin-berth setups.
Owners who choose three staterooms instead of four lose one of the twins to create a VIP suite.
CREW SPACE As is traditional with European culture and yacht design, the crew quarters are minimalistic compared with the guest areas. Access to the crew space is via a side door on the port quarter side deck, a location that is convenient to the galley, straight down a ladder.
Owners can select from multiple crew-space layouts that have cabins for three or four crew, one or two head/shower compartments, and mess areas.
Crew have access from here to the engine room through a door. Headroom in the machinery spaces is reduced, allowing extra room for the garage sole above.
PILOTHOUSE The raised-pilothouse layout is conventional. Stairs lead here from the starboard-side main lobby, as well as from the flybridge via a sliding hatch. A pilot-berth sofa is to port, and there is a standing helm backrest, as opposed to a helm seat, abaft the wheel.
In keeping with the rest of the yacht, the pilothouse décor creates a “guests are welcome” feeling. The space also feels large, when so many RPHs feel just the opposite, and the visibility is terrific
Performance
CARBON FIBER The Azimut Grande 27 Metri comes with twin 1,900 mhp MAN V-12s, 3-to-1 V-boxes and five-blade props. At half-load, and with those diesels spinning at their maximum 2,355 rpm, my test boat made an average top speed of 28 knots across several reciprocal runs — impressive achievement for 90-plus tons of yacht, and more than enough for our photographer, who asked us to slow down because we were leaving his drone behind.
Pierluigi Ausonio’s deep-V hull form delivers the competence we have all come to expect from a big Azimut. Beyond that, the design engineers can take a great deal of credit for getting more and more volume and functionality out of what sits above the waterline — all without compromising performance or stability. The secret is resin infusion (which makes for efficient laminates) and plenty of carbon-fiber reinforcement. Azimut uses more and more of the black stuff these days. You can’t see it, but it’s there, buried beneath the gelcoat in the bow area, superstructure, flybridge, garage door, arch and hardtop. It saves a lot of weight in all the right places.
LONG RANGE With the 1,900 hp MANs, and excluding a 10 percent fuel reserve, the 27 Metri’s legs are relatively long. She’s good for at least 1,000 nautical miles at around 10 knots, which has always been my favorite chug-along speed anyway, not only for comfort but also to simplify passage planning during the pre-GPS days. Owners who want more speed will be good on fuel for at least 700 nautical miles at 12 knots. And for those who want to run fast for fun, this Azimut will manage almost half that range at twice the speed, meaning around 340 nautical miles at a maximum continuous cruise of about 24 knots.

Inside the 38m Azimut Grande Trideck flagship
Related articles, superyacht directory.
Azimut’s new flagship pushes the builder into the domain of superyachts with style and grace
Frisson is the scientific term for a psychophysiological response to an aesthetic stimulus, otherwise known as “chills”. For some, it happens when listening to Andrea Bocelli leave a part of his soul in a verse of Con Te Partiró . For designer Alberto Mancini , that frisson came unexpectedly, as it does, while he sat in the beach club of the Azimut Grande Trideck in Monaco harbour.
“I was invited on board by one of the owners,” the Italian yacht designer says, “and I was looking around at other similar-sized yachts and they were 20 or 30 years behind the Azimut with their design. Honestly, it gave me chills.”
The latest boat to derive from the builder’s constant innovation is the 38-metre flagship of Azimut’s Grande line, and the brand’s first tri-deck yacht. It’s a superyacht, yes, but still a fast boat as Azimuts are meant to be. Naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio designed the yacht’s D2P (displacement-to-planing) hull. The bottom has three major features that make it special: a double chine that increases stability at slow speeds and reduces drag at higher ones; a wavepiercer bow that extends the length at waterline to increase fuel efficiency and minimise pitch; and a central skeg for course integrity, particularly in aft quartering seas. Even with the skeg, the Azimut Trideck draws just over two metres, making her able to navigate all but the skinniest waters.
With the hammer down, this Azimut can get up and go to the tune of 24 knots, more than fast enough to outrun any unexpected foul weather. It can hit these speeds thanks to two 2,600hp straight-shaft MTUs. The much-sought-after wind-in-your-hair feeling that these speeds engender can be enjoyed on multiple exterior decks. The crux of the Trideck’s design and appeal is in these areas, so much so that Azimut describes the yacht as “three decks plus one”.
“We worked with Alberto Mancini to make an additional deck on the aft end of the main deck,” explains Marco Valle, CEO of the Azimut Benetti Group , which creates a cascading effect from the sundeck down to the beach club. This yacht has more spaces from which to enjoy the sea, he says, from the more traditional foredeck, sundeck, upper deck and the beach club, to a split-level main deck aft.
Mancini, who applied similar thinking to his previous collaborations with Azimut, says the cascading exterior was the product of a deliberate goal to come up with a distinctive characteristic. “We created a proper raised aft deck. We call it a ‘sea view aft terrace’, and it’s a lovely place to enjoy the water and the breeze with your guests, and it complements that beach club so well.”
This “terrace” has about 30 square metres of space, outfitted with a sweeping, U-shaped sofa that should be a hotspot whether underway or standing still. It leaves plenty of room below for a full-height beach club.
Azimut also wanted the beach club to be as closely connected to the marine environment as possible. “The biggest problem with a beach club is that the deck is closed off on all sides, and the owners are stuck in the shadows,” says Mancini. “No one wants that. We created openings on either side of the boat, so you never feel oppressed like you’re in a cave. Instead, you can feel the wind and the water on your skin. We think it’s a great achievement. It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before on a yacht this size.”
The owner of the first Azimut Trideck, a repeat client who splits his onboard time between South Florida and the Med, buttresses Mancini’s take. “The beach club is well furnished and open to the sea air,” he says. “You don’t feel like you’re in something enclosed. It’s just an open look and feel and it’s almost flush with the water. So my wife can lie on the bed and watch everyone in the water. It’s like having another saloon, except it’s open to the environment. We love it.”
The foredeck lounge also makes for an excellent place to relax on massive sunpads and in the spa pool. Another space on the aft section of the upper deck offers impressive views and serves as the setting for al fresco meals, thanks to a dining table that can easily sit eight guests. A “skydeck” with chaises longues sits above all, bringing sun worshippers closer to their god.
Of course, with all these outdoor spaces, it would have been easy for the yacht’s lines to become somewhat askew and top-heavy. But Azimut and Mancini understand that with any beautiful thing, proportion is key. They took great pains to ensure that the vessel’s aesthetic elements work in harmony.
For his part in this endeavour, Mancini points to his automotive design pedigree. “When one works with automobiles, the main goal is always to get the proportion right, and so that is always my goal with the yachts as well,” he says. “I’m inspired by sports cars and that industry. Even a car that’s only maybe five metres long directly informs what I will do with a yacht like this one, that is 38 metres.”
The Azimut Trideck has an undeniable je ne sais quois to its outward appearance. Perhaps it’s the way the upper deck parallels the relatively straight sheer line, or the proportion of the bow to the superstructure, which seems to mimic the mix of gravitas and extravagance seen in a Bentley or Rolls-Royce.
Mancini points out that not a drop of seaworthiness was sacrificed for aesthetics. “I have a good partnership with Azimut’s technical department,” he says. “We have daily emails and meetings on the construction and design process. They let me draw what I want to start. You can call this part ‘the romantic step’. I sketch what I feel and they don’t tell me ‘Oh you can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ They allow me to brainstorm, and then the design team works with my vision step by step to approach the technical and practical things and make sure that everything works perfectly.”
A technical decision that paid dividends for Azimut was to use as much carbon fibre as possible, particularly in the superstructure, which is entirely laminated in the material. A driving factor of the yacht’s design was to keep her as light as possible without sacrificing structural integrity, and the carbon fibre helped achieve that. She tips the scales at a relatively feathery 190 tonnes at full displacement. And the decision to use carbon fibre paid off in spades in her interior volume, another key area of the Trideck’s development. There’s so much space that Azimut offers an option for a sixth guest cabin on the upper deck. Valle says that five of the six hulls the company has sold have taken advantage of the six-cabin layout, which is the only major layout customisation available.
The yacht’s interior designer, Achille Salvagni , who pens the interiors for all the models in the Grande series, entered the project with a simple yet ambitious concept in his mind. “The true disruptive force behind this project is its desire to define an alternative use for the settings, by opening them up, and in doing so, presenting new ways to experience the boat,” he says. “When the function of a given space is not strictly defined, it becomes more fluid and changeable, shaped around the need for conviviality and socialisation.” In other words, an open mind leads to open space.
This fluidity shows in the absence of a formal dining area on the main deck. Instead, meals can be hosted at tables on the upper deck, sundeck or the al fresco section of the main deck. This choice opens up the saloon for more casual entertaining and makes it a voluminous party space as well. The goal is to embody a loose and flexible atmosphere.
The interior lines – perhaps best exemplified by the furniture that eschews corners – were designed by Salvagni to be “smooth and sinuous”. Light creams and greys play gently off one another on the fabrics by the Milanese brand Dedar, the veneers, and in the marbles and other stones found throughout.
Salvagni’s work has Azimut’s clients abuzz. “If you look at the ceiling, the floor, everywhere, there is a lot of Italian style, which I like,” the owner says. “The fit and finish has a real megayacht feel to it. And the quality as well. It starts in the railings, and it goes into the hallways and the interior spaces. And another, slightly different aspect I love about it is the isolation you can feel in the boat. They did a wonderful job with the sound insulation. For me, it’s important that when you walk in one section of the boat, you can’t hear it in another section. And this Azimut is almost totally silent inside. It’s amazing.”
The lush and thoughtful interior combines with a heavy emphasis on outdoor living to create a yacht that can do it all. As the owner puts it, “When I’m in the Med, I like to go to Monaco and the fancier places and go out to the parties and restaurants, and the [Trideck’s] lines and high style make her perfect for that,” he says. “But I also travel with my family and want to go to the more isolated islands and really get a chance to enjoy the natural environment in peace and quiet, and she can do that as well. I really don’t know of any other boat that can go to either kind of place quite as expertly as this one. My family and I expect to create many good memories on board.” It’s enough to give anyone the chills.
