Field Rating

About Our Rating Criteria

As a reviewer of dive bars and writer of any sort, it’s important to understand personal biases that might come through in the objective documentation of a space. And I fully acknowledge a soft spot for dive bars in land-locked cities that take on some kind of ironic nautical naming convention. Where Minneapolis’ Northeast Yacht Club leads, Euclid Avenue Yacht Club in Atlanta follows, a dive bar that borders no water and to my knowledge houses no boats.

Euclid Avenue Yacht Club sits in the Little Five Points neighborhood of Atlanta, an ultra-cool confluence of, you guessed it, five roads, creating a weirdly proportioned burst of bars, restaurants and shops. Five Points is also home to a small concentration of Atlanta dive bars, nearby Star Community Bar serving as the spiritual neighbor to Euclid Avenue Yacht Club. Outside, the green awning can’t be missed and the small neon sign above the door tours above the Little Five Points area proclaiming life’s necessities: Bar. Beer. Food.

Wood-lined dive bars are no rare occurrence, but the deep brown color of the wood here, maybe perceptually enhanced by the name of the bar, feels a little less worn and a little more comforting.

Because the area is dense with drinking and dining options, there’s a chance that Euclid Avenue Yacht Club’s relatively simple exterior could cause it to be overlooked. The low awning covers up a little bit of window real estate, obscuring the neon beer signs hung inside. The light colored brick threatens to soak in some of the charm of the space, but stepping inside unleashes a warmth best compared to some kind of fancy captain’s bridge. Wood-lined dive bars are no rare occurrence, but the deep brown color of the wood here, maybe perceptually enhanced by the name of the bar, feels a little less worn and a little more comforting.

Of course, the marlin above the booths that line one wall of the space certainly aids in the Atlanta dive bar’s nautical appeal. Underneath the fish, a selection of largely black and white photos dot the rich, patterned wall, a surface that looks like a wall you’d fine on opposite side of a really, really long table in a very fancy dining room. A mixture of vintage photos, recent shots, additional mounted fish and even an animal skull or two create a pretty diverse set of visual stimuli. Short lamps sit on each of the dive bar’s built-in booths, no small addition to the overall ambiance of the space.

Not to be outdone, the space behind the bar rivals the visual appeal of its corresponding wall, the highlight a wooden sign above the bar inscribed “Welcome Aboard.” You’ll find a wide ranging assortment of signs and vintage souvenirs among the mirrored liquor bottle display, soft lights of twisted glass hanging to provide, yes, another shot of ambiance. The short bar gives way to a kitchen framed in deep red tile in keeping with the color palette of Euclid Avenue Yacht Club.

In Atlanta tradition, a PBR sign or two can be found among the walls, but the nautical theme is alive and well in the mounted collection here.

A second room expands the space as well as the collection of fish, photos and vintage signs. Keep an eye out for the shark positioned just under a stained-glass lamp comprised of six perched birds aiming their gaze at the center fixture. In Atlanta tradition, a PBR sign or two can be found among the walls, but the nautical theme is alive and well in the mounted collection here, offering plenty to take in. A booth in front offers padded, horseshoe seating with prime view out onto the neighborhood that surrounds the dive bar, the best seating option for a group drinking occasion.

There’s a little bit of polish here, to be sure, making Euclid Avenue Yacht Club more of a warm neighborhood pub than a dusty, Prohibition-era dive bar. The presence of a weekly Bingo night is very much in keeping with the local, community vibe of the space, an exercise in dive bar nautical theming done right. In a particularly interesting part of Atlanta’s neighborhood fabric, Euclid Avenue Yacht Club provides the right mixture of warm features and mounted fish to stand out in a great way.

Euclid Avenue Yacht Club turns 30: “It’s kind of like Manuel’s on LSD”

yacht club little 5 points

Photograph courtesy of the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club

The Euclid Avenue Yacht Club just turned 30 years old, a milestone it will celebrate on May 28 by staying open until 1 a.m., one hour past its normal Sunday bed time. Manager Anna Bender says she’ll serve drink specials, including a $2 “customer appreciation shot” called The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea; the kitchen will make St. Louis-style ribs, “because they’ve got more meat on them”; and live performances from Wasted Potential Brass Band, Heather Luttrell, The Boohoo Ramblers, The Young Antiques, and The Dandyls will begin at 3 p.m.

“The neighborhood is still weird,” says owner Donald Hinamon, a.k.a. Hippie, paying Little Five Points a compliment. “There’s been this delicate balance of strangeness somehow, even though the gentrification of all the residential neighborhoods all around Little Five Points has progressed.”

“They leave us to our craziness.”

Hinamon opened the Yacht Club in a former antique jewelry store in 1987. After studying hospitality at Georgia State University, “it was time to cut my hair and get a job with a big hotel chain or do something else.” He’s run the Yacht Club ever since. Bender has worked there for 18 years. People—including the regulars—tend to stick around. There’s a set of stools at one end of the bar that’s been lovingly named The Bullshit Corner, the food and the drinks are better than they need to be, and the mix of stuffed marlins and skulls on the wall keep it weird. “It’s kind of like Manuel’s on LSD,” says Hinamon.

To show our appreciation for the Yacht Club, here are memories from some of its regulars:

Kevin Gillese, artistic director of Dad’s Garage Theatre Company : “When I first moved to Atlanta in 2010, I started dating a lady on my staff. It was a little bit gauche to be dating someone who’s working for you, so we kept it on the hush-hush. We would always hang out at the Yacht Club, but so would other people from work, so I would wait for her to go to the bathroom, and when she was leaving it, then I would go to the bathroom and steal a kiss. For a while, the only people who knew we were dating were the Yacht Club staff; Anna would call me the Secret Kisser. Now that lady, Amber Nash, and I are married. Anna came to the wedding.”

William “Woodie” Haywood, retired: “Recently a friend of ours passed away. At 64 years of age, Beverly White Pleasants was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away four months later. She had no immediate family, but she had her Yacht Club family. So we had a memorial for her there. She loved Elvis, so we played his music, and we put up decorations and shared stories about Beverley. That’s one of the heartwarming stories from the Yacht Club; it’s a group of really caring people in the middle of an urban environment.”

Chantelle Rytter , founder of Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons and the BeltLine Lantern Parade : “I’m not sure I would still be in Atlanta if I hadn’t wandered into the Yacht Club. I moved to Atlanta from New Orleans in 1993 and made friends with people playing darts the first time I went to there. Those people have remained my friends for life. I kept Atlanta; I lost the husband. And the high point of my adult life was dancing on the bar of the Yacht Club to “We Are the Champions” the first year that we won the Halloween parade in 2003. I got up on the bar upon the invitation of the owner, which was great because you know you’re not going to get into trouble!”

Christian Green, bar manager at the Variety Playhouse : “Value for dollar, you’re not gonna find a better cocktail in Atlanta. Just show up and you’ll be treated like a regular—there’s on politics, no drama. It’s our neighborhood anchor.”

Luxury Rules at the Moscow Yacht Show

Maria Sapozhnikova

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Smoke on the water, the fire in the sky.

Yachts go up in smoke. Could be sabotage or could be insurance fraud or could be another careless smoker.

Sucks when you can’t even get a moped through with a six-pack of water.

The whole road is about 15 km and you can take dozens of similar photos on it. Thanks to the successful operation of drones, Russians are sitting in tree lines and  forests with a minimum of ammunition, food and water.
