BYC Club History

In 1946, a group of men discovered that they had three things in common: enthusiasm for boating, love of the sea and rejection from all boating clubs in the area.    

Undaunted, these men held tight to their dream and decided to do an ordinary thing but in an extraordinary way. They formed their own club. This was ordinary. But they established it upon the extraordinary founding principle that their club would not practice exclusion. Rather it would be a club of inclusion, one that would glory in diversity.  For our first two years meetings were held at the Bill Brown Post Memorial Hall in Sheepshead Bay.  Our membership grew, and in 1948, we were able to purchase a barge.  What a lovely barge it was, complete with galley, deck,  and dance floor.  Unfortunately, our stay in this waterborne home was to last only two years. A slightly inebriated caretaker, smoking in bed, started a fire that sent our dream Club House up in smoke. Misfortune was only one side of the coin. Good fortune was imprinted on the other side in the form of a generous insurance policy.  From the smoldering waterline of our lost barge, we looked north. We found a rag-tag commercial marina named "Happy's Boat Basin."  We knew it had a clubhouse and docks. And, we ignored the rumors about its former life as a prohibition era speakeasy and (dare we say) bordello!  The ultimate purchase of "Happy's" did not occur until 1978, but our club grew as an organization. The outward manifestations were our celebrations: Founder's Day, Commissioning Day and Decommissioning Day, Birthday Parties and any good excuse for merriment. But the inward growth proved to be much more important. We became a cohesive group, characterized by genuine concern for each other, whether on the water, or on land. Our founding principle blossomed into an exciting, occasionally raucous, but always dedicated community.  The decade of the 1990's saw an influx of new members who shared our founding fathers dream. They are people of immense energy, creativity and talent who virtually reconstructed the clubs facilities.  They counted on each other as friends in the same way as our founding fathers in 1946.                                                                And the movement continues.

Wonderful waters for sailing, wonderful company to sail with, all sorts of activities, and a membership diverse in every way possible. Make your sailing dreams come true.

I took a sailing class here. The duration is 5 hours. The instructor taught us how to tie knots, how a sailboat works, and how to steer one. A guidebook was given out. The club organized a bbq for the students. We had lunch; afterward, we were paired up with sailboat owners. Thus, we were able to practice what we learned in class. If you always want to learn to sail, this is the perfect place. The members at this yacht club are nice people.

I joined early 2021. They've taught me about sailing, and how to sail. I love it there. My only regret was waiting so long to speak to someone there and inquire about joining. Very ideal place to learn and to have fun. So many options of places to sail.

This boat club has many things to offer. We have Members from all parts of our city, walks of life, and diverse backgrounds.Lots of friendly people who enjoy sailing and sharing there love of sailing! Wether you own a boat or not, someone will take you out for a sail. We have lots of fisherman too. In the evening you can sit by the water and enjoy a drink with your dinner that you can cook on the BBQ. If the weather is not to your liking, the club has a day room with magazines, cards, and games to keep you entertained. There is also a computer and TV. After an exciting day of sail and fishing, you can shower up or take a dip in the pool and then shower up. Join your friends or make some new ones while sharing a drink and stories of the day. Sailing/fishing is a great way to blow off some stress from a busy week of work. Wednesday nights are Pearson Ensign race nights! The race takes about 1:30-2:00s. The race corse is just outside the bay and is a lot of fun for beginners and advanced sailers. All are welcome and dinner usually follows.

This place is a gem. Right in the nation's biggest city is a beautiful little bay and right next to that is a good-sized inlet and right next to that is the Atlantic Ocean -- something for everyone, in other words. If you like to sail -- or just want to get a taste of it -- you won't do better than Miramar Yacht Club. It's on Sheepshead Bay so you can tack around close in or venture way out into the ocean. There are lots of friendly, helpful, experienced sailors with a variety of boats plus the club has a full schedule of social and sailing events. In other words, you don't have to schlep to Maine or Florida to get great sailing. Great sailing and good company are right here, hiding in plain sight.

The star of the show in sailing yachts since the mid 1960s, Nautor Swan is set to debut their newest power yacht, Arrow, at the Cannes Yachting Festival , September 10-15, 2024. Launched August 28, 2024 at the Sanlorenzo La Spezia shipyard, this elegant, sporty, functional sister cygnet is destined to mature at light speed after her global reveal.

Designed by Nautor Swan power division designer Jarkko Jamsén, with interiors by Ioanna Marinopoulou and Axel de Beaufort, Arrow features a contemporary design with wide open spaces that invite longer, more leisurely cruise experiences. Initially intended to be categorized as a chase boat, Arrow proved her prowess as a stand alone day boat in part due to a rapidly increasing fan base.

The first ever Nautor Swan powerboat launched was the Swan Shadow, followed by an inboard version, the Swan OverShadow, which debuted at Cannes in 2023. As Nautor Group President Leonardo Ferragamo noted, "When it was launched the result was overwhelming as it became a boat of its own, creating its specific niche in our waters and becoming a great day boat." That passion exhibited by the team and shared by the market led to the Swan Arrow, a 75-foot motor yacht displaying the totemic Swan DNA.

Arrow By The Numbers

The Nautor Swan Arrow is built in advanced composites using a mix infused with GRP and carbon. The walkaround design emulates that of a superyacht, but in a more nimble, highly usable format, using less fuel in a more intimate atmosphere. Focused on interaction with the sea, side opening platforms creates a 548 square foot (50 square meter) beach area that floats just above sea level. Convenient fold-down steps take guests right down to the water.

A protected cockpit with an opening roof and pivoting sliding glass doors permits a broad panoramic view. The space refreshes with an al fresco vibe when open, maintaining a cozy feel when enclosed. Designed for comfort, Arrow is versatile in helping guests to enjoy time on board regardless of weather.

Her displacement hull measures 76 feet (23.20 meters) with a 22 foot (6.90 meter) beam and a 6 foot 3 inch (1.90 meter) draft. Her maximum speed is 30 knots in the standard arrangement using two Volvo 1350 D13 Penta IPS engines, or 40 knots with the optional arrangement employing three of the same.

Arrow accommodates six to eight guests and two crew. Descending the stairs, guests looking to port find a dedicated galley that serves the aft master cabin. Reaching across the full beam, the master cabin space boasts a walk-in closet, ensuite bath, and stylish materials typical of Nautor Swan heritage.

Amidships, a VIP cabin and twin cabin, both en suite, deliver private guest spaces. An alternative layout offers two large double cabins with a lounge embracing a starboard salon, L-shaped sofa, and dining area. Away from guest areas, crew space for two is located further forward.

Roy Capasso, Motoryacht Commercial Director and Regional Director SEMEA and Americas, summarized, "When starting the Swan Arrow project we began with attentively listening to our clients and a detailed analysis of the market. The results, together with the creativity of our designer and the expertise of a qualified team have allowed us to introduce a new concept with some features missing in motoryachts of this size, answering the needs of their owners."

Founded in 1966, Nautor Swan is universally recognized for its performance Maxi yachts and Club Swan Racing yachts, as well as leisure sailing yachts, all built with an elegant, high quality style emphasizing innovation, reliability, and performance. The addition of a power division at Nautor Swan embellishes the brand with a broad appeal, bridging the gap that once separated power versus sail preferences with one brand.

An agreement between Sanlorenzo and Swan for the acquisition of Nautor Swan Group was announced August 1, 2024, but the continuity of the brand is assured through the leadership of Nautor Swan, helmed by Leonardo Ferragamo, retaining the office of President, Massimo Perotti as CEO, and Giovanni Pomati as co-CEO.

The Arrow is not the only Swan with a scheduled debut at the Cannes Show. The Swan Maxi 88 sailing yacht will make her debut, along with the Club Swan 43 . The Swan 88, designed by Germàn Frers with interiors by Misa Poggi, is expected to earn as many admiring looks as the Arrow. The Club Swan 43, designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, is intended to serve as a racing and cruising crossover enhanced by top of industry technology for competitive one-design sailing and a comfortable cruising environment.

“Wow, thoroughly enjoyed the view and the food! I feel like some of the most recent lower yelp reviews were not reflective of the experience we had. Our server Kelley was fabulous and attentive. We ordered two orders of clams (because they were that good) the spinach salad (added Ahi) the fish and chips and the Cobb salad. Will definitely be going back. Loved the outdoor seating as well! Definitely one of the best views in the area. Already dreaming of the grilled chicken on the Cobb salad – we will be back next time we’re in the area!”
