Best equipped charter boat in my personal experienceTook over the boat in a perfectly clean and exceptionally well equipped condition. Easy but detailed takeover / checkin with all explanations. Boat almost new, and from tools to dishes, welcome package and beautiful sheets and covers on the bed everything was in best and brandnew condition. Many recommendations were given for marinas, harbours and bays, as well as about fishing and special destinations that should not be missed.Aside from the perfect boat and service of Pure Sail Yacht Charter, the Azores are really worth a visit: Perfect nature, friendly and helpful people, beautiful landscape and all far away from crowded and over-marketed areas. This is "real sailing", no crowded bays and no traffic on the ocean aside from tons of dolphins, some whales and even a turtle. All in all a perfect holiday, away from "usual pathes" with a touch of adventure in one of the most beautiful places if not the most beautiful area where I have sailed so far.

The best way to see the AzoresWe hired 'Urze' a beautiful 41ft for three days and two nights along with skipper/owner Duarte and had an absolute ball. The boat is almost brand new, well appointed and very comfortable, with three decent berths. It's also well equipped with a decent size saloon and was perfect for explorung the coast of Sao Miguel, including the famous crater island at Vila Franca. Duarte was an accommodating host, passionate about sailing and the Azores, and was especially good and patient with our youngest. He also turned out to be a pretty good chef! We were privileged to sail among at least three pods of dolphins. This is really a great way to see the Azores and its marine life and Pure Sail comes highy recommended.

The Azores
Nine emerald islands, ranging from the smallest- Corvo with 421 inhabitants to San Miguel with 140.000 inhabitants, warmed by the Gulf Stream and surrounded by an ocean teeming with life. All islands are within easy reach from each other in a day’s trip. The Azores offer some very interesting sightseeing too. The Unesco has declared the beautiful town Angra do Heroismo on Terceira a cultural heritage. On San Miguel are the Blue and Green Lagoons in a huge extinct volcano cone. There are several hot spots on the island, in some of them food is cooked traditionally, one of them is in a small cove and warms the sea, it’s like swimming in a huge bathtub. Santa Maria with its dazzling exotic flora is another Madeira- one huge flowery garden. On Faial is Peter Café Sport, one of the most famous sailors’ bar anywhere on the planet. The beauty of the Azores is endless. No mass tourism spoils any of the islands. Due to the Gulf Stream the weather is always just right- nice and warm but not too hot. From June onwards you can expect air temperatures between 24° and 28°, water temperatures 22° - 25°.

You can chose between going into the ports or marinas and exploring the islands or staying out for a beautiful night sail under the bright stars in a fluorescent sea, caused by bioluminescent algae. Every movement of the boat leaves a glittering trail of small stars in the water, Dolphins coming up to the boat seem to be swimming in long shining pipes. Island hopping on the Azores is very pleasant sailing. You can see the next island when you take off in the morning. However, just a few miles off the islands you are in the deep sea, 2000-4000m depths are normal. After a beautiful days cruise you arrive on a new island to explore. For those who would like a longer trip or need mileage for their Yacht Master License there is the option of a cruise from San Miguel to Madeira (4-5 days), back to Santa Maria (4-5 days) and then San Miguel, altogether 1000 sea miles of mainly Bluewater Sailing.
Yes, there are whales to be seen, and the right expression for what we offer is sea watching; whales, birds, dolphins, turtles, bonitos and sunfish. Whale hunting from small wooden sailing boats has a long tradition on the Azores due to the great variety of whales around the islands. Commercial whale hunting ended in 1966, however, you can still find the traditional whaling boats around the islands, now used for leisure. You can often say hello to dolphins coming up to the boat for a visit. Tuna and bonitos sometimes follow the boat for days on end. In calm conditions you can go for a swim from the boat. A strange feeling, swimming in the ocean, knowing there are several thousand meters of water below you. The water temperatures rise to about 23°C in July and 24°-25° in August, with air temperatures around 25°-27° thanks to the Gulf Stream. There is no better and relaxed way to get to know a bit about sailing and the sea.

The yacht has an unusual colour, for a good reason: white, blue, green etc. might look nice in the marina, but the bright yellow is for safety, making sure you are seen out at sea in all conditions.

Air Azores (former SATA), TAP, Easy Jet and Ryan air offer flights to the Azores, Porto and Lisbon. All airlines also offer flights out from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada (São Miguel, the main island). There are several alternatives to get to Santa Maria: - Via Lisbon and then directly to Santa Maria, Azores Airlines operates flights from Lisbon to Santa Maria on Thursdays and Sundays. - Fly directly to Ponta Delgada and then on to Santa Maria (daily flights, 15 min) or take the ferry. - Via Lisbon or Porto to Ponta Delgada (several flights per day) and then on to Santa Maria ( .

Bareboat charter means renting a yacht without crew, means that you will be its captain, you will have both the responsibility and the pleasure of navigating it between your chosen destinations, at your own path and as the weather and nature forces permit.
For that, you just need 3 simple things: (i) to have the proper qualifications (please visit licensing for bareboat)(ii) to have the adequate sailing experience and (iii) to have the desire of captaining a yacht.
The Captain/Skipper will be responsible for all aspects of running the yacht, including sailing, navigating, anchoring, provisioning, cooking and cleaning. But do not worry, because you will do all of it in the utmost sailing environment of freedom and privacy.

The historical and cultural heritage of this archipelago can be found in its ancient churches and monasteries. If you want to get acquainted with the culture of the Azores, you should visit the town of Madalena located on the island of Pico, here you can visit wine museum and famous ancient Santa Maria Madalena church. In Sao Ruca, explore the Sao Roque church and the monastery of Sao Pedro de Alcantra. The Archipelago of the Azores are located in the mid North Atlantic Ocean, within a range bounded by the parallels 36° 55' 43'' and 39° 43' 02'' N and the meridians 24° 46 ' 15'' and 31° 16' 02'' W. It is about 1430 km from the European continent and more than 3900 km east of North American mainland. The islands form the Autonomous Region of the Azores, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal. The archipelago consists of nine islands gathered into three distinct groups: the Western Group, the Central Group and the Eastern Group. The two main yacht charter areas of the Azores are either the central island group including the islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa or the eastern islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria. The Azores are a great cruising ground with everything from steep rising majestic volcanos to sleepy little fishing villages. On the SW coast Faial lies the town of Horta, the main port of the Azores archipelago. The island is well known for its visually dramatic volcano, Ponta do Pico (2351m altitude) which is not only the highest point of the entire Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but is also the tallest mountain in all of Portugal and the Azores. Pico is often called Ilha Preta (Black Island) by locals, thanks to its black volcanic soil. The island is distinguished by its long narrow shape and by the presence of numerous coves which have been formed over thousands of years by the falling slopes. The coves now contain many small, quaint coastal villages. Velas Marina, on the SW coast provides 77 berths in the protected natural harbour and offers a spectacular view of the cliffs. The town of Velas is within walking distance from the marina making shopping, sightseeing and provisioning easy and convenient. The 140.75ft /42.9m Custom motor yacht ‘Grayzone’ was built in 2010 by Concept Marine and last refitted in 2016. Her elegant exterior and interior styling are the work of Concept Marine, who is also responsible for her engineering.

Grayzone’s interior layout sleeps up to 10 guests in 5 rooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 2 double cabins and 1 twin cabin.
