On board with Lang Walker, owner of the Kokomo yacht series

In the wake of Australian property developer Lang Walker's death, BOAT International reflects on a 2018 interview where he discusses his Kokomo dynasty – from a humble dinghy to a series of superyacht sloops and a private island hideaway...

“My first Kokomo was a small dinghy, a VJ [Vaucluse Junior], back when I was kid. I used to race and that’s what got me hooked,” says straight-talking Lang Walker. Since his childhood exploits the name Kokomo has stuck, but the boats have changed dramatically, including three Ed Dubois-designed sailing superyachts. It is in his office, with swing music playing softly in the background, that Walker, who is now in his early seventies, is telling me about his lifelong love affair with sailing and the sea.

However, rather than a superyacht, his latest Kokomo is actually an island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef, which Walker has transformed into a luxurious barefoot resort, with 21 beachfront villas and six luxury residences. His “office” is an expansive white table on the shaded terrace of his residence, with uninterrupted views across a palm tree-strewn beach to a glistening reef beyond. “It’s a beautiful spot here,” he says. “In a way that is how it started because I thought ‘I wouldn’t mind having a house on this beach’. In the end, we got the house and everything else that went with it.”

It might seem strange for Walker to take on such an ambitious project at this stage, but for those who followed the evolution of his three Kokomo sailing superyachts it will be less of a surprise. His first was a 42-metre sloop designed by the late Ed Dubois, with interiors by RWD and built by New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts (a combination that remained unchanged through the following two builds). “The 42 metre was launched for the 2000 America’s Cup down in Auckland,” recalls Walker. “We also raced in the Millennium Cup there.”

Five years later Walker decided to expand and set about the build of a 52-metre sloop. But no sooner had the champagne hit the hull than it became clear that Walker still had unfinished business when it came to superyacht design. “The day I launched that boat I could see that there were probably about 20 or 30 things that I wanted to change about it,” he says. “So, the same day I booked a slot for the next one and set to work tweaking all the things I wanted to change.”

The main focus for Walker was improving performance and further enhancing the social spaces – minor modifications included modernising the design of the wheelhouse and creating storage for two hard bottom tenders under the foredeck. The greatest challenge of the third build was the introduction of a keel mechanism that allows the draught to be adjusted from 8.7 metres to 4.6 metres. This system adds stability for speed without ruling out shallower cruising grounds. At the time Dubois described the project as a “big step up” in sailing yacht design and in 2011 Kokomo won the Naval Architecture Award at the ShowBoats Design Awards and was a finalist at the World Superyacht Awards .

It also proved to be third time lucky for Walker, who still spends three months per year on sailing yacht Kokomo . The yacht has spent time in the South Pacific but the height of her mast means it is not possible for her to pass through the Panama or Suez canals and it’s a long slog around the capes. As a result, her permanent base is in Palma and Walker spends the majority of his time on board in the Mediterranean. “My favourite areas are the top end of Sardinia and the bottom end of Corsica. There is always a very good breeze through the Strait of Bonifacio. For a yacht her size she is very, very fast.”

Alongside his Kokomo superyachts Walker’s need for speed has also been fulfilled by racing Farr 40s. “I have always been in racing and sailing ever since I was a kid, then about 15 years ago got into the Farr 40 class. When they had a really big fleet I had one in Sydney, one in Europe and one in America and we would do the regattas all around the world. It was pretty exciting sailing and good, close one-design racing,” he says. The Kokomo team notched up many victories, including back-to-back wins in the Farr 40 Australian Championships and the Australian Farr 40 circuit in 2007 and 2008. After a short break, Walker returned to race in the Farr 40 Australian Nationals in 2016 despite twice having undergone replacement hip surgery.

As well as his love of racing Walker is also a passionate diver, a hobby which was born during his spell in the Navy. “I did all my clearance diving and instructing courses back in the Navy when I was 20. From that date on I have been a very avid diver,” he says. “It took me a few years after that to be able to afford a nice big boat. We have a 39-metre powerboat, which we have had for 23 years, which is really our dive boat and we have gone all over the Pacific with it.”

It was diving that led him to his latest Kokomo – the island of Yaukuve Levu, which had been abandoned part way through development following the coup in Fiji in 2006. The island was initially found by a friend visiting on one of his boats and it took more than a year for Walker to be persuaded to visit in person – “I didn’t think I needed an island in Fiji,” he says, smiling. However, once confronted with the fantastic diving and the ability to moor a yacht, even at low tide, Walker’s imagination began to take hold, despite his wife Sue questioning whether they really needed to own a Pacific island.

After climbing to the top of the hill on the island to get phone signal, a deal with the bank was made and the Kokomo Private Island project began. “I bought the island for A$2.8 million and that was the cheapest part. From there it sort of went downhill,” he says. “I thought maybe A$10 million and 18 months to two years to get it up and running. It ended up taking five years and the budget went many, many times over.”

Walker is no stranger to complex regeneration projects as he has spent the past half a decade delivering thousands of construction ventures across Australia, Malaysia, America and Canada. “We are working on one of the largest commercial projects in Australia to date called Collins Square. It is very challenging; we started with a terrible block of land with an old railway shed on it. The other big project we are doing at the moment is rejuvenating all of the commercial precinct in Sydney at Parramatta Square,” he says, pulling a pile of designs to show me from across the table. “This is probably about A$2.7 billion upon completion.”

The Parramatta Square area is thought to be one of the oldest parts of Sydney. It is where Captain Cook and Captain Phillip went to look for fertile land and it is no coincidence that it has a nautical connection. “A lot of projects that we have done over the years have been based around water,” he says. “Either over the harbour or around the harbour, or restoring and reclaiming land.” One of his most famous projects in the late 1990s was the regeneration of Finger Wharf at Woolloomooloo, which transformed the 400-metre-long former wool processing port into a mixed-use development including 300 apartments. It is now home for Walker and his wife when they are not on board or visiting the island.

Despite his experience in the construction industry, Kokomo represents a completely new challenge for Walker. “I have never run a resort before. I don’t know the first thing about it and we had a bit of a rocky road there,” he admits. But as with superyachts, perseverance has paid off and since opening in April last year Kokomo Private Island has already established itself as one of the world’s leading barefoot luxury resorts.

Walker has also been approached by multiple chains to add Kokomo Private Island to their management pools. “I decided that is something maybe I can do at some point but I want to keep it as a family destination and something that is unique, not part of a big chain. Some days I still think to myself ‘why?’, but it is just a challenge whether I can actually do it,” he says.

Kokomo Private Island is not the only time that Walker has mixed business with pleasure. His boundless energy means that no holiday is complete without a project. “Many years ago I was in Aspen with the family and I pulled a muscle and couldn’t ski,” he explains. “So I went on a search for real estate from one end of the valley to the other. Eventually, I found a golf course owner who was in financial distress. It was a place called Buttermilk. So I bought all of his real estate assets and spent the next 15 years developing those out. That was in my spare time, so I had something to do when I was on holiday. We sold the last of those houses last Christmas for US$25 million. It was quite interesting.”

While Walker is certainly not in vacation mode on his island – constantly on his golf cart checking up on every detail of the property or answering his James Bond-themed phone ring – it is clearly done with pleasure. His and his wife’s presence on Kokomo creates a relaxed atmosphere. The pair spend roughly three months a year there and will happily join guests for dinner or for snorkelling trips to the reef.

Family remains at the heart of the island and that is why this project means so much to him. “The three kids and the eight grandkids are always descending on the place. The grandkids never want to leave,” he says. “Before we opened my granddaughter asked ‘Grandpa, are we going to let other people stay on our island?’. She wasn’t sure to begin with but she is OK with it now as there are lots of other kids her age, so it’s fun.”

It appears that this Kokomo has finally done enough to satiate Walker’s love of a challenge. “Sue asked me recently ‘Are you done with houses in Aspen? Are you done with yachts? Are we nearly done with the island?’ And my answer was ‘yes’ to all of those questions. It’s not the end as I have got to deliver a lot of the things we have on professionally but it’s certainly the end of hobby projects. This one will keep me busy for a long time.”

Sitting in Walker’s island office it is easy to see why – it is a pretty spectacular Kokomo to complete the set.

Kokomo ii refit for fun.

The skilled marine trades at Rivergate carried out crucial upgrades on a much-loved motor yacht, bringing her up to peak performance and contemporary comfort.

kokomo ii yacht

An icon of Australian boat building heritage, the totally bespoke vessel spent eight months at Rivergate Marina & Shipyard, in the hands of Australia’s most skilful marine tradespeople, undergoing a hull extension and several other complex upgrades.

The 37.5m/123ft motor yacht ‘Kokomo II’ (ex-Achilles II charter yacht) was designed by Jack Hargrave and built by Lloyds Ships at their Brisbane shipyard and delivered in 1987.

Her current owner uses the vessel for family cruising in Australia, Fiji and the South Pacific.

Under the direction of Rivergate project manager, Marty Johnson, MY Kokomo II underwent a full repaint, the addition of new teak decks, a new lazarette and engine overhaul.

Marty has been working at Rivergate for eight years and in the industry for 25 years. With his background in Engineering, Marty was Chief Engineer MC5/4 onboard various vessels and he regularly undertakes technical courses to keep pace with technology and regulations.

During the Kokomo II refit, as many as 20 different contractors worked on the vessel, including engineers, fabricators, painters, shipwrights and electricians.

Refits of this nature provide significant work for local small businesses, particularly those located within the Rivergate precinct and others hailing from the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Marty’s role is to co-ordinate the trades to a logical and timely schedule. Contractors often need to work in close quarters with one another and in a precise order, so running a “tight ship” is crucial.

“However, there’s a reason we’re recognised as Australia’s leading refit destination and one of the top three superyacht shipyards globally – it’s because we select the best people for the job at hand,” explained Andrew Cannon, RMS General Manager.

Kokomo II is a regular visitor to Rivergate. Captain Luke Caldwell has been at the helm for 11 years and stated that every yard experience at Rivergate is smooth and stress-free, thanks to the combined expertise of a close-knit and collaborative team.

“From out very first maintenance period at Rivergate we always received the help and advice that we’ve needed,” he said.

“The planned works are always very thorough to make sure it runs smoothly, but it’s that extra help outside the scope of works that I find to be the biggest benefit from having the contractors and trades on-site and a team of people who know what they’re talking about,” he added.

kokomo ii yacht

It was during a maintenance period in 2019 that Captain Luke and Andrew Cannon first broached the idea of upgrading the transom section of Kokomo II, which would suit the vessel’s owner and family, all keen on enjoying the water with the latest watertoys.

During the planning period, over many months, Captain Luke acted as owner’s representative on the project and worked closely with Andrew and Marty to finalise the owner’s priorities and the brief.

With the yacht out of water for several months, the team took the opportunity to carry out further upgrades. The scope of works expanded to include a full exterior paint job, as well as engine room overhaul. The heart of the vessel was stripped right back to its two engines, rewired, replumbed and the electrical system replaced.

The transom refit which involved a new swim platform and stairs, extended the yacht from 34 to 37m, the lazarette was gutted and refurbished up to a contemporary standard, kitted out with all new equipment.

The marine professionals involved in the project included:

Wright Marine who carried out the teak deck works, including the new transom, stairs for swim ladder and from transom to main deck, aft deck and a teak countertop in the lazarette.

Ausships fabricated and installed the custom-designed transom, which was built and grafted to the hull while the vessel was in the superyacht shed. Ausships also fabricated doors, main deck gate and latching, and the underwater light cofferdams (watertight enclosures).

Millennium Marine Australia undertook the fairing and painting, including blending the paintwork on the transom section into the existing hull.

Engineering works were handled by MPS who fabricated the stainless steel awning supports, modified the drainage pipework and water supplies for the sink and shower, installed the shower and modified the ventilation pipework

M2i Electrical Services supplied and installed the four Aqualuma underwater LED lights, installed the cabling in the lazarette, LED strip lighting and down lights on the garage door. They also installed and programmed a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for all lazarette and transom switching.

The iconic vessel was given a warm send-off when it departed Rivergate in mid-January 2023, heading to Sydney for a few weeks of cruising the Harbour and waterways of Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River. Feedback from her owners was all positive, the new transom and upgrades described as “the perfect addition to an already perfect boat”.

Project Manager, Marty said he was privileged to apply all his skills to ensure the enhancements were brought to fruition, on budget and on schedule.

“Kokomo II is a vintage vessel, it’s unique and retains that elegance of a former era,” explained Marty.

“And now her paintwork, systems and the deck areas, including the transom and lazarette have been brought up to date, with extra benefits to the vessel, such as liveability and comfort for cruising Australian waters.”

Kokomo II completes eight-month refit and extension

' src=

The 37.5-metre Lloyds  motor yacht Kokomo II has emerged from an eight-month refit at Australian yard Rivergate Marina&Shipyard with a three-metre stern extension.

Built in Australia in 1987,  Kokomo II  returned to its birthplace for refit work having cruised Australia, Fiji and the South Pacific extensively under her current ownership. The yacht checked into the Queensland shipyard for a full repaint, new teak decks and engine overhaul, as well as a new transom and lazarette that saw the yacht’s length extended from 34 to 37 metres.

“Adding the transom adds a lot of practicality, function and use without changing the overall lines of the boat,” said Captain Luke Caldwell who has been at  Kokomo II ’s helm for 11 years. Rivergate’s general manager approached Caldwell during a routine yard period with the idea of a transom extension in 2019, noting the owner’s lifestyle and enjoyment of the water.

“With this project originally planned for five to six months, there were other things like generators, steering pumps, electrical panel system including a new switchboard, PLC system and radar that needed updating, as well as an exterior paint job,” explained Caldwell.

The team took the opportunity to carry out further upgrades expanding the scope of work including the engine room which was rewired and replumbed.

Kokomo II underway

The Queensland-based yard has said the refit efforts were a sort of homecoming for the vessel, with over 20 different trades working together to “seamlessly” modernise the yacht while maintaining its charm and beauty. Wright Marine carried out teak deck works, Aus Ships fabricated the transom and doors as well as other features and Millennium Marine Australia undertook the painting work. MPS headed engineering while M2i Electrical Services were responsible for wiring amendments.

Jake Whittle, Production Foreman at Aus Ships, said his team was proud to have been engaged to design and build the extension on the stern of such a notable vessel. “It’s been a fantastic experience for me and our team to be working on a vessel built in the 80s by some of our employee’s relatives or people they’ve known.”

Project manager Marty Johnson has been working at Rivergate for eight years and in the industry for 25 years and said  Kokomo II  is unique and “retains an elegance of a former era.” The historical yacht was given a warm send-off in mid-January and wasted no time in setting sail for the Sydney Harbour not long after relaunching.

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,’ the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht

Sailing Superyacht Kokomo

The 192-foot Kokomo was the second largest sloop in the world when it launched from New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts shipyard in 2010. It remains the largest fast-cruising sloop available for charter. The yacht’s commissioning owner Lang Walker (who died in January 2024) was a seasoned sailor who gave all three of his yachts the same name.

The first was a 131-foot sloop, which Walker replaced five years later with a 171-footer. The same day he took delivery of his 171-foot sloop, he placed an order for the third and final 192-foot Kokomo, which he planned to use for racing and cruising around the world. He also kept the same design team for all three yachts, with exterior and naval architecture by Ed Dubois and interior by UK’s RWD.

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’ , which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo .

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom

kokomo ii yacht

When Kokomo was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.

A Hidden Lifting Keel

kokomo ii yacht

The yacht’s 130-ton lifting keel is one of its most impressive features, though it’s largely left to the imagination. The interior layout is carefully designed so that the keel structure remains hidden. Dubois Naval Architects positioned the keel box to come above the main deck, serving as a partial separation between the bridge and the main salon (see inset). Kokomo was only the second yacht to be fitted with a lifting a keel, the first being 246-foot M5 (ex-Mirabella V), the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht. This innovative design shortens Kokomo’s 28.5-foot draft when the keel is fully extended, to just 15 feet for shallow waters.

Fast-Track Sailing

kokomo ii yacht

Kokomo was one of the first yachts to be fitted with a hydraulic batt-car system for furling the mainsail, which has cars at each batten end that slot in an outer track on the mast. This alleviates a once-common issue where the luff tape or bolt rope on large sailing yachts became chaffed by the compression of the battens, which often caused the in-boom furling mainsails to fail. “When sailing Kokomo , especially when racing, I am completely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the hydraulic system,” says Kokomo ’s captain, Jeremy ‘Bear’ Wynne, who notes the yacht’s recorded top speed is a very impressive 22 knots. “The jib furlers are some of the fastest I have seen. There is absolutely no shortage of hydraulic power, even with multiple winches running on a jibe—a rarity on a big sailing yacht.”

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

kokomo ii yacht

Kokomo might be big on technology, but never at the expense of design. The wheelhouse has fold-down computer screens that conceal the navigation equipment when not in use, converting to beautiful carbon counter tops. This design sleight of hand transforms a highly technical area into a tony lounge. It’s a theme that extends to the foredeck, where the yacht’s two tenders are concealed in dedicated lockers. There’s also a fully retractable tender crane that launches the tenders from either side of the boat but disappears out of sight when guests are using the Jacuzzi. “The designated deck lockers were an advanced feature at the time of her launch,” says Wynne, adding that another bonus is that diesel tanks are fully available. “The tenders can be fueled onboard before launching.”

It Takes Just A Few Good Sailors

kokomo ii yacht

Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.

Art On Board

kokomo ii yacht

The hallway that leads to the owner’s cabin is lined with a mosaic tapestry made from sea glass woven together with wire. Backlit to create an unusual effect, it’s just one of the eclectic works of art that decorates the interior. The main salon also has a stunning and colorful work of glass art as another example.

Interior Matters

kokomo ii yacht

Kokomo is not all tech features. The yacht’s modern interiors combine dark wood floors and calming cream furnishings start in the main salon and continue across the five guest cabins. Penned by British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon, the design carefully wraps around the lifting keel without sacrificing or impeding on any interior guest space. The yacht accommodates up to 10 guests in a master suite, VIP, one double cabin and two twins. There are other accommodations for up to 10 crew. On the foredeck, the Jacuzzi brings another element of outdoor entertainment, bolstered by a sunken cockpit.

World Traveler

kokomo ii yacht

The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.

Kokomo II Completes Refit and Extension at Rivergate

By George Bains

Lloyds-built superyacht Kokomo II has completed an extensive eight-month refit at Brisbane’s Rivergate Marina and Shipyard, including a transom extension. Captain Luke Caldwell shares his appreciation for the work carried out by the Brisbane-based shipyard and how the yacht has been reinvigorated to modern standards of luxury.

During a yard visit in 2019, the plans for this comprehensive refit and extension were first discussed between Luke Caldwell, Captain of Kokomo II, and Rivergate ’s General Manager, Andrew Cannon.

The extension of Kokomo II’s transom has added an extra three metres onto the overall length of the superyacht, now at 37-metres. Other projects carried out included a full exterior paint job and full electrical works.

“When you carry out major works like an extension, it’s a great opportunity to then revamp other works because you’re out of the water for an extended period of time,” reflects Captain Luke Caldwell.

Rivergate Marina & Shipyard boasts a glowing reputation as one of the best refit facilities not only in the Southern Hemisphere, but around the world. Its idyllic location, world-class trades and infrastructure has been a major drawcard for owners and captains. More than this, it is the project management and attention to detail of the Rivergate team that is often the source of praise from visiting yachts.

“Right from the start our first yard work here has always been smooth,” continues Luke Caldwell. “It’s that extra help outside of the scope that I find the biggest benefit to having all the contractors onsite and the team of people who really know what they’re talking about.”

Marty Johnson, Project Manager at Rivergate , shared his pride at enhancing a heritage yacht with modern standards of performance and comfort.

“Its been an awesome project to work alongside the crew and captain under the owner’s direction with our onsite contractors who have been heavily involved in the refit right from day one from project planning full to completion,” said Marty.

“Every refit is different. Every owner has different requests, every crew and captain have different ways of doing things. Probably the highlight for the vessel is the fact of her vintage and we’ve now brought the vessel up to modern day standards with the additions, adding a lot of extra benefits to the vessel – better liveability and better for cruising the beautiful waters around Australia.”

You can discover more about the refit opportunities at Rivergate in the Australia InDepth episode 'A Refit Capital ', hearing from Director Tom Hill along with the testimonies of other visiting superyacht captains.

“In our company we measure our design objectives against Jack Hargrave’s dictum that, at the end of the day, the boat has to perform at sea. Everything else in the design process needs to bend to that single principle. It’s the right way to do it, and at Hargrave, it’s the only way to do it,” - Michael Joyce, CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts
