What Is The Process of Transporting a Yacht by Land?

Pre-yacht transport.

First, we will discuss the details of your transport. The key things that we will need to know are: the measurements of your boat, make and model, timeframe & desired route.

Measuring your boat accurately is vital for us to know if it can or can’t be transported by land legally along your required route. If your yacht is oversized, or will need to travel through cities with many narrow roads or low bridges, we will need to research the transport route & requirements by obtaining permits & perhaps pole cars or police escorts in your locale if they are legally required.

Next, we will send you a quote and then a digital contract once we have confirmed the logistics and timeframe with the driver. Since equipment and drivers are in high demand, we require a 50% deposit to reserve your pick-up-date range on our schedule. Once the contract is signed and we have received the deposit, we will reach out to your marina to introduce ourselves and begin the coordinated process to ensure your boat is ready for transport on pick-up day.

During Yacht Transport

On pick-up day your boat will be loaded and strapped down to the trailer at the marina (or other pick-up location).

The loading process typically takes a couple of hours. The driver would be happy to take a picture of your loaded boat at the marina and send it to you. The driver will provide frequent updates on progress and the condition of the boat throughout the transport.

Once we arrive at your destination, the marina will unload your yacht from the trailer & the process is complete! Enjoy your boat in its new destination.

Yacht transport companies provide transportation services for clients who need to have their vessels relocated from one location to another. A yacht is a craft used for both pleasure and sport and is usually very exclusive crafts and is usually built for fun.

Elite Yacht Transport Services Nationwide and Overseas

Yachts can also vary in size. Yacht transport companies have an array of options for transporting yachts based on the dimensions of the yacht. There are 2 basic scenarios that are the norm for yacht transport. Yachts without trailers can be transported by using one of our trailers. Yachts that have a boat trailer can be transported by one of our trucks hooking up to the trailer and towing the trailer and the yacht. In either instance, both services are appropriate for yacht shipping.

Depending on the size of the yacht, there may be a requirement for permits and/or escorts. Permitting and escort requirements vary from state to state. Also because of the height of the yacht, while it is on the trailer, there may be a requirement that the yacht is transported accompanied by a pole car to make sure the route has the proper clearance for the yacht. Once again, this will vary from state to state.

Certified Yacht Transportation Company

Yacht transportation requires a lot of coordination and should not be trusted by a company that is not reputable. Because of the size of most yachts, they will require some type of permit for transport. This could be a width permit, a length permit, or a weight permit.

Also, the height could require an escort. If the yacht is not already on a trailer and the yacht transportation company is providing the trailer for transport, there must be coordination with the pickup location so that they can provide the loading of the yacht onto our trailer. This is commonly done via a travel lift. The lift allows the yacht to be suspended safely in the air while the trailer is positioned under the yacht for loading. Once the trailer is safely under the lift, the yacht is slowly let down onto the trailer. Once the yacht is safely on the trailer, it is strapped down and prepped for the actual transport.

This includes properly and safely strapping the yacht to our trailer. Once the yacht is in place, we will also measure the yacht again to make sure that all the permits that are needed are in place before the yacht is moved.

Secure Yacht Shipping Services

When the yacht is already on a trailer, yacht shipping becomes a little easier. If the yacht is already on a trailer, then we will simply send out one of our trucks to hook up to the trailer and transport the boat while it is on the owner’s trailer.

Although this method is easier than having to provide a trailer for transport, it still may require permits. This could be a width permit, a length permit, or a weight permit. Also, the height could require an escort. Once again, if the transport requires permits or escorts, we will coordinate all of that. Also, if the trailer that the yacht is on is not a registered trailer, we can provide a temporary transport tag for the yacht shipping. Before transport, we will make sure that the trailer is in good working order. The trailer must be Department of Transportation ready.

This means that the lights on the trailer need to be in good working order. All of the bulbs and blinkers must be working. Also, the tires must have appropriate tread and cannot be worn down. We will make sure that the trailer is road-ready before we start the transport.

Yacht Transport by Road

The most common method of shipping a yacht is yacht transport by road. There are some rules regulations for yacht shipping by road and they vary from state to state. It does not matter if you use our trailer or if we transport your yacht on its own trailer. Smaller yachts that do not exceed the width of 8.6 feet can be transported by road without any restrictions.

Yachts that are wider than 8.6 feet but less than 12 feet can be transported but will require a width permitting. Width permits can be issued quite easily through the Department of Transportation in each state that will be traveled through during the yacht transport by road. If the yacht is over 12 feet wide, then there is a requirement for police escorts.

Yacht transport by road may also require an approved route survey by the Department of Transportation. Some highways, bridges, and roads may have restrictions based on the size of the yacht. The Department of Transportation will provide the approved route for the transport based on the size of the yacht. This is the only way to be sure that you will not run into any problems during the transport.

International yacht shipping is very different logistically and can present a whole new set of challenges. There are 2 steps to international yacht shipping. The first step is getting the yacht to the correct port that sails to the international country that you are shipping to. This process is exactly like the over-the-road transport that we mentioned earlier.

Once we get the boat to the correct port, the boat will be loaded onto a shipping vessel for transport to the country of desire. International yacht shipping requires additional paperwork. You should expect to work with a customs broker who will handle all of the necessary paperwork to get your yacht from the United States to another country. Depending on the country of delivery and the size of the yacht, prices can vary greatly. The other option is to hire a captain and a crew to actually pilot the boat to the country of delivery.

How to transport a yacht nationwide?

The simplest way to transport a yacht nationwide is to utilize a company that has the ability to transport via road. Based on the size of the yacht, they will determine what permits and escorts will be required for the transport. We can use our own yacht trailer or if your yacht is on a trailer we will transport both.

How to ship a Yacht overseas?

Shipping a yacht overseas requires the yacht to be shipped on a cargo ship or large vessel that can accommodate the size of the yacht. Shipping a yacht overseas will require customs paperwork and can be rather expensive. You will want to work with a reputable company that can reassure you that there will be no issues.

How to transport a yacht?

Yachts that do not have a trailer can be transported using a trailer provided by the transport company. If the yacht is on a trailer then the transport company can simply hook up to the trailer and transport both the yacht and the trailer.

Our History

Founded in 2019, JTA Yacht Delivery & Consulting has grown into the leader in Yacht Delivery and Transportation into and out of the Great Lakes and beyond.  We concentrate in "on water" transport for Yachts of all sizes as well as coordinate with shipping Yachts to and from the Great Lakes and Worldwide via cargo ships.  JTA Specializes in operating all types of propulsion from Surface Drives, Waterjets, Pods and traditional Propellers.  Our experience lies throughout the Great Lakes and Canals, Eastern Seaboard, Bahamas / Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, Austrailia and Central / South America.  

Meet the Founder / Owner.

Jordan Tilton obtained his Captains License in April 2003 while working on a high speed ferry in Lake Erie and attending college.  Upon graduation, immediately moved to Charleston, SC and began working onboard Yachts and continues working alongside some of the largest Yacht builders in the world.  He's held a variety of application engineering positions with engine and propulsion OEM's and is well versed in the mechanics and inner workings of Yachts. He has been able to operate yachts in Europe, Middle East, Austrailia, Central /South America and all over the United States.   Today,  JTA Yacht Delivery works directly with manufacturers, brokers, insurance companies and private families and he is also a licensed broker with Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales.
