Billionaire Clive Palmer has bought a $40million superyacht patriotically named 'Australia'.

The Queensland based mining tycoon has moored the 56m vessel in the Brisbane River with the international crew currently undergoing two weeks quarantine.

The yacht is an upgrade from his previous 35m Sunseeker $8million runabout, the Nancy Jean.

Italian company Benetti created his new yacht in 2012, which has been previously named Bash and Ulysses.

Mr Palmer made the purchase in December after the 12 guest and 12 crew capacity vessel had been on the market since 2019.

The yacht includes two sundecks, an outdoor and indoor bar, a jacuzzi, a VIP suite with bridge deck views, and an owner's suite complete with an office, walk-in wardrobe, and private bathroom.

Mr Palmer - also the chairman of his United Australia Party - enjoys entertaining on his yachts along the Brisbane River, Gold Coast and Hamilton Island.

He's been splurging recently buying several luxury canal-front home on the Gold Coast and a $20million Sovereign Island mega-mansion.

As well as his mining businesses he owns a number of luxury golfing resorts along the Queensland Coast.

He is worth about $13billion, according the the Australian Financial Review.

His plans for the next federal election have also taken another step as he called for candidates to stand for his United Australia Party.

Mr Palmer says he has a significant war chest for his next tilt at Canberra, and claims his campaign will outspend the two major parties.

'I am encouraging our members to take the next step in creating a new era in Australian history by nominating to become an endorsed United Australia Party candidate for the 2022 Federal Election,' he said in a statement on Friday.

The UAP is calling for nominations for representatives in all states and territories to run for positions in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

'With a strong field of candidates and our tens of thousands of members behind us, we will do our very best to win the next Federal Election,' Mr Palmer said.

Superyacht Australia CEO on Doubling the Industry

By George Bains

During a weekend of Australia Day celebrations David Good, CEO of Superyacht Australia, met with Superyachts.com to discuss a watershed moment that carries the potential to double the size of the Australian superyacht industry. The passing of a new Special Recreational Vessels Bill has opened the country up to charter for foreign flagged vessels, marking the end of a long struggle to break free from shackles which had impeded the industry from reaching its full potential. The impact of this cannot be overstated, and a renewed air of optimism is sweeping across all corners of the industry here in Australia.

A man with a strong military background, David Good is no stranger to responsibility and leadership.  By the age of just 28 he had worked his way to becoming a Tactics Instructor in the army, taking a lead in security operations before he made his foray into the world of superyachts with Ports North in Cairns. Nowadays, David is widely heralded as the man who pushed this much needed superyacht legislation over the line.

During his time managing port and marina operations, David soon came to understand the importance of charter regulations and the wider economic impact it has on the country. “ I quickly developed a sense of what was really important in the industry ,” reflects David. “From an early time, everyone mentioned the fact that foreign vessels couldn’t charter in Australia and that’s more than half of the world’s fleet. We sat there and thought if we can change this piece of legislation, we could at least double the industry overnight, and in Cairns double the occupancy .”

Determined to make sure Australia reaped the benefits of its unrivalled natural beauty and advanced infrastructure, David increased his involvement with Superyacht Australia, forming part of a concerted effort which including leading brokers and marina managers committed to lobbying the government for change. However, this was a struggle that had existed long before David Good’s involvement, and it was to take three gruelling campaigns to finally pass the bill through the senate.

The wave of interest that lifted the superyacht industry in Australia before the 2000 Olympics had died down by 2003 after the end of the Americas Cup in New Zealand, and was further hindered by the global financial crisis. The mission to reignite the optimism of the turn of the century encountered several political stumbling blocks, the most crucial of all being a need to separate superyachts from cargo vessels in legislation. Superyachts had previously been caught up in the Coastal Trading Act, which imposed damaging restrictions making commercial activity on yachts unmanageable. After two campaigns in 2015 and 2017 that fell just short of passing new legislation, a separate bill was finally passed at the end of last year.

“ After working on it personally for about 9 years, and for the industry to have been working on it for 20 years, everyone was in a state of shock ,” said David. “ The Act is very clever in regard to the three changes we needed made to the Coastal Trading Act. It references all other parts of the Trading Act, and then for the three things that we needed changed it gives us our own legislation just for those things .”

Asked what he expects to see happen in the coming years as a result of the change, David used examples of countries in the region who have taken similar measures in recent years. “ The lazy 2-second answer is that we can double the industry. When we looked at what happened in Fiji, their average length of stay was about 21 days. That’s the kind of numbers I used to see up in Cairns. When they brought in charter laws several years ago, that went up to 136 days, which blew me away that that’s their average length of stay! When you look at it and think the vessel is parking itself for a full season, and if they pick up 2 or 3 charters in that 136 days then they’re happy .”

Yet, David is confident that Australia can go even further. “ We looked at what we’ve got here in Australia and we thought we’re a year-round destination. You can do 4-6 months up in the Great Barrier Reef and Kimberley in the North during winter, and then come South for the summer. So, the potential here is for us to change that to in excess of 200 days .” For the wider industry, this presents huge opportunities ranging from a retail boost, fuelled by crew spending, and more activity in shipyards through maintenance and refit works.

“ The shipyards, which is where the expensive infrastructure is, have either already invested or they’ve got the approval ready to go ,” responded David when probed as to whether the infrastructure is ready to meet a proliferation of superyachts in the country. Queensland-based shipyard Boat Works is to open a new A$120m redevelopment aimed at attracting larger yachts, while neighbours Gold Coast City Marina are lining up a A$106m investment. Elsewhere, Rivergate – an award-winning shipyard famed for refit projects on superyachts such as 74m Aurora – is believed to be ready to give the green light to a large investment on the back of the new legislation.

There are, however, some areas where work does need to be done. “ It’s the in-water infrastructure that we need to catch up on, ” David admits; however, such work won’t cause much of a burden. “ Putting floating pontoons and the like together is not that expensive. Southport Yacht Club has just pulled the trigger on a 163m berth. Sydney Harbour is well protected so it’s quite easy to anchor, but we are going to have to improve the in-water infrastructure here. But that’s an easier thing to do than the full infrastructure .”

An exciting time lies ahead for Australia, and David expects a different superyacht clientele to soon flock to his country. “ It’s more the explorer yachts that are going to want to come here ,” he says. “ At the moment there’s two jewels in the crown that the boats come to which is the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney Harbour, but there’s so many different spots that Captains who are in the know are itching to take people to.

“Tasmania should be on everybody’s bucket list, it’s just an amazing spot to do by water, there’s places that you can’t get to any other way. The Kimberleys is an amazing place and really the only decent way to see it is by sea. ” Luxury experiences in the country are already well established thanks to a thriving private jet industry, and the connection to superyachts has started. “ All those things are already in place ,” says David of luxury facilities. “ It has matured because of the fly-in market, so having superyachts is just going to make them more attractive as you can go on an alternative itinerary .”

Over the coming months, Superyachts.com will provide you with a closer look at the unspoilt and untouched destinations within Australia. With the Tokyo Olympics and America’s Cup soon approaching, now is the best time to uncover a country that offers everything a superyacht owner could wish for.

"We looked at what we’ve got here in Australia and we thought we’re a year-round destination. You can do 4-6 months up in the Great Barrier Reef and Kimberley in the North during winter, and then come South for the summer." David Good, CEO Superyacht Australia

Michael Dempsey superyacht Settlement

On board 34.4m Sunseeker superyacht Settlement with Australian owner Michael Dempsey

Australian owner and founder of Ezidebit Michael Dempsey spends 10 weeks a year on board his 34.4 metre Sunseeker named Settlement , resulting in quite the adventure .

I am from Australia and, though I have always been involved with water activities and boats, my first foray into yachting was only five years ago when I bought a 19.4 metre Sunseeker . I liked the look and at that size, I naively thought I could drive it myself. When my then skipper told me about a 34.4 metre Sunseeker, my first reaction was, I don’t want another boat. But it looked good and so for the hell of it I put in an offer and it was accepted. The boat was in Antibes and though the surveyor gave me a good report, my wife and I figured we better fly over and check it out. The first question I get is always about the name, Settlement ; let’s just say the second choice was No Prenup!

  • On board Heesen yacht Lady Azul with owner Stephan Schaerrer

For our first season we stayed in the Med, followed by a season cruising the east coast of Australia. In 2019 we went to the South Pacific, Vanuatu and Fiji. Covid-19 kept us closer to home in 2020, cruising between the Gold Coast and the Whitsundays, which covers the southern Great Barrier Reef, Treasure Island and the northern Great Barrier Reef, stretching about 600 miles. For sheer natural beauty and sea life, you can’t compare the Great Barrier Reef. On a recent fishing trip 90 miles offshore on one of the outer reefs, we quickly caught a few fish; suddenly a large shark appeared and bang , just bit the fish off the line. That’s what it’s like out there.

  • On board with Carolyn Aronson, owner of 50m superyacht She’s A 10

I grew up surfing, so we are always looking for surf out on the ledge of the Great Barrier Reef, but you do have a lot of our friends in the grey suits that come out of the deep; you’ve got to be a little bit careful. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, like the time I took my family crocodile spotting in Port Douglas. The engine on the tender overheated and our skipper got badly burned when he removed the radiator cap. He was quickly rescued by the crew on jet skis, but it left us adrift in the tender, floating dangerously close to the riverbank. I was never so happy to see the crew when they returned and towed us out.

We like to go deep into little lagoons, so the first thing I did was install a 360-degree sonar. There is a lot of reef that doesn’t appear above the surface, but it protects you from bad weather. When you get a sunset out there, on the eastern side it will be pitch black and as you follow the sky up and over to the western side, you will see an amazing range of colors from black to blue where the sun has yet to set. You can’t see land, the ocean is all around you, and it is one of those life experiences that you can only do in a yacht like that and it’s very romantic.

I sold my business, Ezidebit, about six years ago and while I still have investments, I don’t let my diary dictate what I do. If I see a three- or four-day window and the wind is below 10 knots, I say “OK, we’re off.” Three times a year we go off heliskiing in Japan, New Zealand and Canada. My wife is also an adventure freak and I’m sure our children are following us as adventure seekers.

Australian billionaire James Packer has listed his Italian-built superyacht for sale for a whopping $283 million.

The casino mogul bought the yacht in 2019, which boasts a cinema, nightclub, swimming pool and barber’s salon, and was originally purchased for around $200 million.

The yacht which is named IJE, believed to be after his three children Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuelle, has been listed on the site of international superyacht broker Burgess Yachts.

It states that it was “built as the ultimate world-cruising family yacht for a very experienced owner” and can fit 22 guests in 11 cabins, which includes a private owner’s deck.

Inside there’s a relaxed beach house-style interior by Benetti with IJE the longest yacht ever created by the company, while its also the flagship of their custom fleet.

The 108m yacht is described as having a “timeless sculptural exterior” and includes an elevator and three functioning levels including a sun lounge bridge deck with a firepit and open air dining with a lounge and bar on the main deck.

There’s also a great array of toys and watercraft that come with the yacht too, such as two 12m tenders, boats attached to the yacht.

The broker’s website described the 54-year-old’s yacht as offering “true world cruising credentials” with its Rolls Royce dynamic positioning system

His purchase of IJE followed after he gifted his 288-foot Artic P yacht to his sister Gretel in 2017, while he previously owned the 170-foot Amels Seahorse that was sold in 2015.

Mr Packer’s current net worth is estimated to be around $US3 billion ($A4 billion), according to Forbes.

A probe into Crown Resorts recommended back in February that the embattled gaming giant have its Sydney casino licence revoked, in a crippling blow to its $2.2bn Barangaroo project.

One mortgage group is outpacing owner-occupied loans at an astonishing pace, with one critic claiming the new figures show it’s easier for “hoarders” to own homes they don’t plan to live in.

A “mystery winner” sitting on a massive million-dollar lottery win has less than two weeks to come forward.

Police have charged seven people for their role in a shocking alleged international investment scam that swindled $14m from at least 30 innocent Aussies.

IT’S the super yacht that has Port Adelaide buzzing with rumours. Could it be Hollywood hunk Chris Hemsworth’s floating palace while on Tourism Australia duties, or a luxury base for Elon Musk while keeping an eye on his big battery?

The Felix is moored at Port Adelaide after meandering down the east coast with stops in Sydney and Hobart.

The former research vessel was converted to be the super yacht Amadeus in 2007 for French luxury goods billionaire Bernard Arnault.

It was renamed the Felix in early 2016 following its sale to a mystery buyer for an undisclosed price. At the time one valuation put it at being worth 65 million euro ($A100 million).

Felix is a world away from a fishing tinny. The 70m ship is configured to take 12 guests in six cabins, plus 18 crew, with facilities such as jacuzzi, gym, cinema, elevator serving three decks and golf driving range.

In 2008 the Power and Motor Yacht website listed it as the 64th largest motor yacht in the world, noting “Former British prime minister Tony Blair, his wife Cherie, and rock star Bono cruised together aboard this yacht last summer”.

What Felix is doing in Adelaide is a mystery, although there are many theories. Comments on social media include claims it is owned by a North American businessman.
