It´s not just about qualifications and experience and we know this; we understand the challenges of living and working onboard a yacht and recruit the crew who will fit in with your team.

We don´t wait for crew to apply to our super yacht jobs, we actively head hunt to find the best crew for you.

EL CREW CO - Erica Lay

AN INTERVIEW WITH ERICA LAY

Interview by sarah drane – december 2014.

I wanted to be back at the coal face of crew recruitment, to be the one doing the interviews and placing the crew, giving clients my full attention. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed training people and improving a business, but I much prefer crew placement. It’s far more challenging and I get a kick out of it.

In short - no. EL CREW CO was created to be personal and boutique. I enjoy getting to know my clients and crew and, the more people I employ, the more the brand is diluted. As a rule clients hate being passed around different personnel in a big office, staff who don’t necessarily know them or indeed their yacht’s needs. My regulars can drop me a message saying “Erica, need a deckhand to join us in Tahiti on the 15th, John’s broken his ankle!” safe in the knowledge that I know them well enough to send them the right person. Recruitment is all about relationships - I don’t want to be the biggest, I’d rather be the best.

In addition to my sparkling personality (coughs), I’m also quite smart. I have plenty of informed opinions, particularly on subjects I’m passionate about, such as yachting. And shoes. But mostly yachting. People come to me for advice on industry hot topics and ask for my views, I am proud of this. I love a good discussion and I know my subject matter very well. Having an engineering background (true story) gives me confidence, while my previous career as a project manager directing teams allows me to empathise with senior crew. And of course, I’ve worked on boats, starting at the bottom of the food chain. A few years back, during a career break, I was also the smallest and only female shark feeder in the Bahamas, this tends to earn respect and a few “ooohs”.

What’s that? Work life what now?! As anyone running a small business will testify, it’s a tricky balance.

When I am busy I work every hour around the clock; however, when I set up EL CREW CO, I intentionally focussed on long-term crew placements, only doing the odd short-term position for regular clients, and this means I have quiet times. When all the yachts are out mid season, in August and January for example, I can set up an ‘out of office’ and get as far away from my desk as possible to tick off a ‘bucket list’ item or two. But truthfully I can’t switch off (I’d welcome tips and advice on that actually) and always travel with a mobile office so I’m available for emergency client requests. The only time in the past two years I’ve disconnected from the internet was when I was at sea and I honestly thought I’d had a limb removed.

Isn’t imitation the biggest form of flattery? I’m happy that, although ‘only’ a boutique agency, my ideas are influencing the marketing departments of bigger companies across the industry. As a little fish in a big sea, I can make one hell of a good ripple.

Incredibly! It’s how everyone communicates for a start, with the added bonus that if I’m having ‘one of those days’ I can flick through Facebook and laugh at someone’s Friday night antics. Social media is an excellent platform to reach a huge amount of people in a very short space of time (instantly in fact) as well as being a great source of information. The trick is to keep it entertaining and light. One of my clients summed it up beautifully - “Facebook is for those jokes you tell down the pub, when you’re not at the pub. Serious stuff is for websites.” I try to keep the EL CREW CO page positive, funny, motivational, informative and personal. There are lots of crew out there whom I’ve not yet met in person, but many feel they already know me a little bit - I have Facebook to thank for that.

Yachting is a very successful and wealthy industry, as such it’s attracted a lot of people looking to exploit and extort both crew and yacht owners. This really grinds my gears, but sadly there are always people who pick on the vulnerable. It’s also not very conducive to happy relationships, I see a lot of break ups. I can’t actually think of a third one…

Bad grammar and spelling – basically when it looks like they’ve put a CV together in five minutes. Your CV is your first impression and, if it looks like a fag-packet sketch, it will create an instant and lasting impression of the wrong kind. Like the closet geek I am, I studied CV psychology across the board and spoke to various captains to create what I perceive to be the best CV guide currently out there (Yes, I actually just said that). This guide is available on the ‘Community’ page of my website and really easy to follow - it’s got a pretty good success rate too.

Second, lateness to appointments. If you have a meeting set up, unless you get struck by lightning, then be on time. No, actually, be five minutes early.

And lastly, Crocs and/or white sunglasses. Just, no. Never. And leave the skateboard at home.

Enthusiasm, smartness, qualifications, eagerness, confidence, a great sense of humour. I know that’s more than three, but the positives outweigh the negatives. I also like to see new crew who’ve done their research. There’s no excuse not to have read up on yachting before coming to seek work, there are so many resources out there. Meanwhile I love to see experienced crew who are serious about their careers and keen to find the right yacht for them. Ambition, passion and drive. These are the crew members I am proud to place.

In Palma, I love how the industry is so tight. Overall I see lots of crew helping each other out to find jobs or day work, decent accommodation, social hangouts and so on. Other yachtie hubs aren’t so warm, Palma is a great base. It’s also a great opportunity to travel and see the world. Yes, you’ll be working for most of that time, but with the great wages on offer and the complete inability to spend them whilst you’re working, think of the holidays… It’s glamorous, unique, and constantly developing. I can’t bear standing still so working in an evolving industry like this suits me down to the ground.

While we already discussed imitation being the greatest form of flattery, I’d at least rather get a head start on my grand plans before I publicly reveal. So you’ll have to wait and see.

In response to an increase in demand for well-trained interior yacht crew, the Stewardess Training Academy was established in Palma in June 2016. Formed by Jess Barnard and Erin Bloom - former yacht crew stewardesses - the training academy aims to imbue both inexperienced and experienced interior crew with the skills to offer exceptional service and a distinguished sense of professionalism.

superyacht jobs palma

"When we started the academy, we thought that we would mainly be working with green stews, but, to our surprise, we have been training a lot of stews with a few years' experience in the industry. It can be hard for stews that already have experience to admit they need training, but some boats don't have the time to conduct formal training on board, so it makes sense that they want to do certified courses, " commented Bloom.

The academy partners with many other organisations to offer a diverse range of courses - each of which is designed to develop stews' long-term career aspirations and boost their confidence. Course topics include an introduction to the interior, food service, barista, silver service, floristry and plant care, yoga, and wine. With competition for yacht crew jobs increasing, it is essential to maximise your skillset; building a strong arsenal of skills can open more doors to jobs on yachts .

superyacht jobs palma

Set in a beautiful 3-storey villa in the heart of Alaro, Palma, the Stewardess Training Academy provides a memorable learning experience, as well as a sure-fire way to a enhance your skills. The beautiful island was selected as the academy's base due to its importance as an international yachting hub. Currently, many yacht crew live on the island, but there are few interior training facilities in the region. Jess and Erin recognise the transient nature of the yachting industry and are committed to evolving with industry demand.

Bloom commented on the academy and the students that enrolled there: "Since we started the business we've received a constant influx of emails, and have had girls (and guys) signing up for courses all the way into the summer months. I think this is indicative of the importance placed on interior training, not only by employers but also by interior crews themselves. Yachting is more competitive than in the past and green crew especially are looking to do more courses to give themselves the edge. So too, employers call on this as a deciding factor not only in the employment of newbies that have additional skills but also as testament of crew members that are more committed and that choose to invest in themselves and their careers. I believe that the same is true for seasoned crew. We were surprised to find that our courses are most popular among steward/esses that already have various years of experience and are still seeking extra tutelage.

Various associations are campaigning for there to be a set standard and we too see the need just through the students, employers and recruiters that desire interior crew to have additional training. There is an all round call for interior roles and training to carry more weight. We have also found that stewards and stewardesses often require training as a confidence boost. As so many boats are unique in the ways that things are done and with longevity perhaps limiting a broadened experience, many seek to brush up on their skills or require the affirmation that what they have learned is correct and of a high enough standard in order to progress in their roles. "

superyacht jobs palma

To date, many interior crew have taken advantage of Jess and Erin's experience and knowledge. Leanne Eldridge, one of the course's former students, said: "[It was a] fantastic, practical and very thorough course. It was so great to be taught by, and have questions answered by, ladies who have so much industry experience. Both Erin and Jess were super helpful, accommodating, and fun. I would highly recommend [the course]! "

Thomas Percival also paid testament to the academy and the organisers: "This course was very informative and great fun. I learned lots of useful skills for the future. The instructors were very friendly and approachable. "

Palma Yacht Crew

Where and When To Find Work On Yachts

superyacht jobs palma

Being new to yachting, relocating to typical yachting destinations such as Antibes, Palma or Fort Lauderdale (if you are legal to work in the US) will increase your chances of finding a job on a yacht massively. If you are looking to find work on yachts, the benefits of relocating are several:

  • More yachts (obviously)
  • You can dockwalk
  • You can find daywork
  • Great networking opportunities
  • Easy to meet with crew agents in person
  • You can interview in person at a short notice
  • Captains prefer to hire green crew locally (unless they have specialty skills)

Generally, those new to the yachting industry look to travel to either Palma de Mallorca, Antibes and Monaco, or Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

Alternatively, you may also want to check out

  • West Palm Beach, Florida*
  • Newport, Rhode Island*
Most new yachties start at the popular ports, Palma, Monaco and Antibes, and Fort Lauderdale

superyacht jobs palma

In these locations you will find less competition for the jobs, in particular for daywork, but perhaps also less of a yachting scene. What some chose to do is to base themselves in Antibes, then hit the various ports on the Cote d’Azur and perhaps also running off to the Italian ports for a week or so. They are only a few hours away by train – and the views underway make a nice scenic excursion!!

The hiring season in the Med starts late March and continues through late May-ish. In the following months there will still be crew changes, but the majority of the jobs are found in the pre-season.

During the winter months and while it is the quiet season in the Med, some may chose to try their luck in

  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida*

* If you seek employment in the United States, please beware that you  must either

  • Be a US citizen
  • Possess a US work permit (please notice that the B1/B2 and C1/D visas are not work permits)
  • Apply and get hired from an overseas location and fly in to join foreign flagged vessels only
  • Foreign crew are not legally allowed to dockwalk or apply for work in the US

***Violating US law you may risk having your visa revoked along with a 10-year re-entry ban***

Should I go to Palma or Antibes?

That’s a pretty good question! Below you will find some pros and cons for and against both places;

SHOULD I GO TO ANTIBES (SoF – South of France)

(SoF – South of France)

  • More yachts
  • More large yachts
  • More marinas
  • Few gated marinas
  • More crew houses
  • Great public transport
  • More competition for the jobs
  • Sailing community not as developed as in Palma
  • More expensive
  • More spread out
  • Winter refit work in La Ciotat hours from Antibes

SHOULD I GO TO PALMA

  • A little less competition for the jobs
  • More sailing yachts
  • Marinas not as spread out as in France
  • Safer than France
  • Cheaper than France
  • Great community feel
  • Full of picturesque beaches, mountains and a beautiful old city all within an easy reach
  • Nightlife even better than Antibes
  • Winter refit work centrally located in the city
  • Most marinas are gated
  • Less yachts, in particular yachts 70 m+
  • Only two dedicated crew houses (but heaps of hostels and private accommodation)

Should I go to Fort Lauderdale?

Fort Lauderdale is considered by many to be “The Yachting Capital of the World”. There is some truth to that statement, as it is indeed a yachting hub for yachts of all flags. The city is a great place full of yachting facilities, both in terms of yachting services, but also for crew. You will find a number of the more well-established crew agencies and training schools there, crew houses galore as well as a great nightlife. Moreover there are good dockage and repair facilities as well as excellent provisioning, so it is only natural yacht owners, captains and crew prefer to bring their vessel to South Florida. That means there is a fair demand for crew, but foreign crew* need to beware that they are not allowed to seek work there, including dockwalking.

  • Possess a US work permit (B1/B2 and C1/D visas are not work permits)
  • Foreign crew are not legally allowed to dockwalk or apply for work in the US. This includes looking for work locally on Daywork123 or social media if you are in the US
  • Foreign crew are allowed to visit and sign up with crew agencies as well as doing yachting courses, however

How to Work on a Superyacht, with no Experience

Working in the superyacht industry looks like the dream job, right? But, how do you get started with no work experience? With over 12 years in the industry, interviewing and hiring countless candidates across various positions, we know first hand what information you require to get your first real crew job on a superyacht. In this post we highlight some of the features of our “Beginners Guide to Yachting” Ebook which explains all you need to know from how to get your CV yacht perfect, typical daily stewardess or deckhand duties, how to find day wo rk, and more.

What kinds of entry level positions could I apply for?

The two most common entry level positions on yachts are stewardess and deckhand jobs. These are both junior ranks whose primary concern is to keep the guests happy and ensure the interior and exterior are kept immaculately clean.

What previous experience is useful when looking for a job on a yacht?

While working on a yacht is certainly different to any land-based career, there are a few land-based jobs that would have equipped you with skills useful on a vessel.  Jobs that may be useful include:

  • Hospitality-related jobs
  • Waiting tables in a high-end restaurant
  • Child care or au pairing
  • Carpentry
  • Sports or diving instructor

If you have already completed some form or degree or diploma in engineering or mechanics, this is also considered a huge plus.

Are there specific qualifications I need?

Yes. You will need an STCW 10 certificate to understand basic safety protocols, as well as an ENG1 Medical Certificate to prove that your health is in good enough shape to join a vessel. Get Onboard Superyacht Academy offers complete STCW and ENG1 training in Cape Town, South Africa. These are the only compulsory documents needed, but if you are interested in a specific role, we offer specialised courses to equip you for these.

How do I get my first job on a yacht?

Once you are qualified, follow these steps:

  • Construct a CV. Be sure to include all relevant information and documents, as well as a friendly, yet professional photo of yourself. Download our free template for a starting point.
  • Pick a location to start. Antibes in France, Palma de Mallorca in Spain, and Fort Lauderdale in Florida are great places to start out as a newbie.
  • Find some day work. This is work outside of a formal contract, which may involve helping out for a day to several weeks. Day work is an excellent opportunity to network, build contacts in the industry, and get a foot in on your journey to securing a more permanent job.

How much money do you make working on a yacht?

The standard entry level salary for a junior stewardess or deckhand ranges between €2,000 – €2,500 or $2,300 – $2,800 per month. This amount is generally tax free, although the onus is on each crew member to check with their home county about tax obligations. Certain countries are tax exempt, provided you spend more than six months out of the county.

Superyacht Owned By Steve Jobs Crashes Into Another Multi-Million-Dollar Ship

You can’t park there mate.

Apple founder Steve Jobs may be turning in his grave this week after the $130 million superyacht he commissioned came crashing into another multi-million-dollar yacht. The Venus ship was reportedly at anchor when strong winds blew it into another nine-figure ship.

Jobs commissioned the Venus superyacht prior to his death, however it wasn’t finished before he died in 2011 and was delivered to his widow a year later. The $130 million yacht remains in Laurene Powell Jobs’ possession and was recently spotted at anchor off the coast of Italy.

However, it wasn’t a simple spotting of the ship floating at anchor off the coast of Naples, Italy. Instead, the 255-foot vessel was seen plowing bow-first into another multi-million-dollar ship anchored in the Mediterranean, reports Boat International :

A source close to the matter has confirmed that a sudden change of wind led to the collision between the 78.2-meter Feadship superyacht Venus and the 104.6-meter [344-foot] Lady Moura off the coast of Naples, Italy. The statement read: “On 22 July while at anchor, Venus came into contact with Lady Moura, which was also anchored. No family was on board, only crew. The wind changed very suddenly, picking up from a breeze to 55 knots over the course of a few minutes.” It continued: “Neither boat dragged anchor, though the other boat was on a chain double the length expected in the depth of water they were in. Both captains were in discussion immediately following the incident about minor repairs needed.”

Footage of the crash shared across social media shows the bow of Venus heading straight for Lady Moura . People onboard Lady Moura can be heard shouting to the other vessel to stop before it crashes into the ship.

There’s a sinister grating sound as the pointed front of Venus scrapes along the side of Lady Moura, and the video’s poster has reportedly claimed that a “big scratch” was left by the crash that will cost “a lot to fix.”

The captains of both vessels have reportedly now met to discuss the damages sustained by the crash and essential repairs that must be made.

At least the only damaged caused to the two ships was as a result of the crash. After all, they were skirting danger in the Mediterranean Sea , which has been the scene of several killer whale attacks on ships in the past year.

Yacht Insurer OMAC Is Hull Carrier for Yacht Sunk Off Sicily, Sources Say

superyacht jobs palma

Yacht insurance provider OMAC is the carrier on the hull for the Bayesian, a 56-meter-long (184-ft) sailboat, that was hit by a ferocious storm on Monday, sinking off the northern coast of Sicily, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.

The syndicates providing insurance include Travelers Companies Inc., Navium Marine and Convex, while British Marine is the protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance provider, the sources said.

Reuters could not ascertain the value of the yacht or what the value of potential claims could be.

Update: Divers Retrieve 5th Body From Mike Lynch Yacht Sunk Off Sicily

Ships typically have P&I insurance, which covers third-party liability claims including environmental damage and injury. Separate hull and machinery policies cover vessels against physical damage.

Convex declined to comment, while OMAC, Travelers, Navium and British Marine did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

The British-flagged superyacht was carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello when it was hit by a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday. Fifteen people managed to escape the yacht before it capsized.

Four bodies were found on Wednesday aboard the sunken wreck of the yacht belonging to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, sources close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

Morgan Stanley’s and Hiscox’s Bloomer Among Those Missing After Yacht Sinks

The global yacht insurance market has faced significant challenges in recent years, largely due to natural disasters like Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Ian in 2022, which devastated numerous charter bases and hundreds of yachts.

In response, insurers have increased rates and reevaluated their guidelines and risk appetite. Insured losses in the market have mostly stemmed from hurricanes, severe storms, floods, and other weather events in North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, according to a report by broker Marsh .

Family clings to hope of air pocket in sunken superyacht as debris hampers search

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching for six missing people from a superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily told NBC News Wednesday that debris inside the vessel, as well as its depth, were making their job difficult.

As hopes of finding anyone alive dwindled, the divers said that they had managed to force open one of the Bayesian’s access doors but access to the cabins where people could be trapped was being hampered by detritus.

The divers, who were not authorized to speak publicly, added that the depth of the wreck meant they were left with only 10 minutes to search the 184-foot yacht once they reached it. Then they had to return to the surface, they said.

On Wednesday, the dock where they set off from was swarming with vehicles, boats and rescuers. Nearby tourists, reporters and photographers have gathered, eager for news. Helicopters occasionally fly over the area.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the yacht remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

Rescuers said Tuesday that there might be people trapped inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.

“The operations are long and complex,” Italy’s national fire department, whose diving teams have been participating in the search, said on X .

Italy's coast guard also said Tuesday that divers were also using a remotely-operated underwater vehicle to aid in the search.

Sailboat sinks off Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized near Sicily’s main city of Palermo in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers and Bloomer, who testified in his defense, on the trip.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told the BBC on Tuesday the family was “coping the best we can” and he was hopeful there might still be air pockets inside the hull.

Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello and Yuliya Talmazan from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

How did the superyacht carrying tech tycoon Mike Lynch sink off Sicily?

Lynch’s was among five bodies retrieved by divers on Wednesday after the Bayesian sank, according to reports.

Divers operate in the sea to search for the missing after a luxury yacht sank off Sicily

Five bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, and a sixth on Friday , by divers searching for those missing from the superyacht which sank off the Sicilian coast in the Mediterranean. The bodies found include British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , the UK’s Telegraph reported. The bodies have not been formally identified by the authorities yet.

It is understood that they were retrieved from inside the sunken yacht, which is reported to be lying on its side on the sea bed at a depth of 50 metres

The yacht capsized on Monday at about 5am (03:00 GMT) after it was hit by stormy weather caused by a “waterspout” – or mini tornado – according to Italian authorities.

The cruise had reportedly been undertaken to celebrate the acquittal of Lynch in a fraud trial in the United States in June.

His co-defendant in the trial, Steve Chamberlain, who was also acquitted in June, was killed after being hit by a car on Saturday.

Here’s what is known so far about the yacht, those on board and who died or were still missing after it sank.

rescue

Who was on the superyacht which sank?

According to the Italian coastguard, the 56-metre-long (184 feet) British-flagged yacht, called the Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including 10 crew members.

One person has been confirmed dead after rescuers located a body on Monday at a depth of about 50 metres (164 feet), the AFP news agency reported. Officials have not yet given the name of the deceased but Italian media reported that he was the yacht’s chef.

AFP reported on Tuesday that divers had spotted a second body inside the sunk boat, quoting a source close to the search operation. Authorities have not confirmed it yet, though.

While not all the names of the six missing passengers were not made public officially, they were understood to include:

  • Mike Lynch, 59, a British-Irish technology businessman who co-founded British tech company Autonomy in 1996 and was once likened to Microsoft founder Bill Gates; he earned a PhD from Cambridge University
  • Hannah Lynch, 18, Mike’s daughter, who had just completed her final school exams and was due to begin a degree in English at the University of Oxford this September
  • Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old British chairman of Morgan Stanley bank and the Hiscox insurance company, was confirmed as missing by Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain
  • Judy Bloomer, Jonathan’s wife, was also confirmed as missing by Hussain
  • Chris Morvillo, from British international law firm Clifford Chance, was confirmed to be missing by Salvatore Cocina, head of the Civil Protection in Sicily

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued. Among others rescued were Charlotte Golunski, 36, a board director at Luminance, a software startup founded by Lynch; her husband, James; and their one-year-old daughter, Sophie. Golunski is understood to have kept her daughter alive by holding her above her head while she was in the water.

All those rescued are in stable condition, although eight of them have been hospitalised, according to Italian news agency Adnkronos.

What do we know about the Bayesian?

Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi constructed the superyacht in 2008 and refitted it in 2020, according to the company’s website.

The yacht’s owner is listed as Revtom Limited, a firm solely owned by Lynch’s wife, Bacares, according to company documents seen by the Reuters news agency.

It was formerly called Salute but was renamed Bayesian after Lynch’s PhD thesis and his software that earned him a fortune. Both of these were based on the statistical Bayesian theory, championed by mathematician Thomas Bayes.

Where was the Bayesian last seen and where was it going?

The Bayesian was last located on Sunday evening in the Tyrrhenian Sea, east of the harbour at Porticello, according to ship tracking websites Vessel Finder and Marine Traffic.

Porticello is a port city located near the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

The yacht had departed on August 14 from the Sicilian port of Milazzo. Its destination was reported to be the Italian city of Bagheria by the tracking websites.

Did a waterspout cause the yacht to sink?

Italian authorities reported that the stormy conditions that caused the yacht to sink were triggered by a waterspout.

A waterspout is a rotating column of whirling air and water mist – sometimes referred to as a mini tornado – according to the website of the US National Ocean Service.

The website adds that a tornadic waterspout is a tornado that forms over water or moves from land to water. They are similar to land tornadoes and can occur during thunderstorms.

Who is Stephen Chamberlain and how is he connected to this case?

Chamberlain, 52, was Lynch’s co-defendant in a fraud trial in San Francisco, which saw both men acquitted in June.

Chamberlain died in a hospital from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, on Saturday. His death was confirmed by his lawyer Gary Lincenberg in a statement on Monday.

The fraud case related to Hewlett Packard’s $11bn acquisition of Autonomy, the firm Lynch grew into the UK’s leading tech company before it spectacularly unravelled after being bought by HP in 2011.

Lynch was extradited to the US in May 2023 and he spent more than a year under house arrest before his acquittal. Chamberlain was the former vice president of finance at Autonomy.

The yacht trip was supposedly a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal.

How did the rescue operation unfold?

Specialist divers began a search anew for the six missing people on Tuesday. Three divers, equipped with oxygen cylinders, descended beneath the surface to examine the wreck.

They initially faced difficulty accessing the yacht’s chambers because they were constricted by furniture.

An investigation into the wreck has been opened by prosecutors in the nearby Sicilian town of Termini Imerese.

What have survivors and witnesses said about the incident?

“It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind and shortly after it went down,” survivor Golunski told the ANSA news agency.

She added that she had lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the water for “two seconds”, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety. She reported that people were screaming.

Karsten Borner, a captain of a nearby yacht who witnessed the sinking, said he had turned on the engine of his ship to prevent collision with the Bayesian. “We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” he told reporters.

Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a trustee of the Eve Appeal, a UK-based gynaecological cancer research charity. Athena Lamnisos, the CEO of the Eve Appeal, was quoted by the BBC saying she was “deeply shocked to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan, are among those missing”.

Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

  • Share full article

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.
