Powerboat Level 2 – training on your boat - General

Powerboat Courses

The RYA Level Two course is also known as the National Powerboat Course. It is our most popular course and the two days over which it is run gives plenty of time for both practical instruction and theory. Training on your own boat is an excellent way to develop a great understanding of your boat, what it is capable of and how to make close quarter handling straightforward!

Course Duration

2 days from 9am to 5pm.

Instructor – student ratio

The RYA teaching ratios allow there to be up to 3 of you on the boat with our instructor during the course. If possible we’d always recommend that you have the people that boat with you regularly join you on the course as it is really beneficial to look at techniques as a team for subjects like berthing or launch and recovery.

Updated June 2023

Prior experience

No prior boating experience is necessary. The course equally suits those new to boating and those who have been boating for years. You do not need to already have Level 1 before you take Level 2.

Minimum Age

We are generally happy for a child over 12 to attend the course with you but would always recommend that if they are going to spend two days on the boat they have some prior boating experience as opposed to this being their first time afloat – please do not hesitate to call to discuss.

Why choose Powerboat Training UK for your Powerboat Level 2 course on your boat?

Our location and teaching facilities ~ Poole Harbour is a truly amazing teaching location – so much so that the RNLI and the Royal Marines base their training operations here.

Likewise our base in Lymington at Aquasafe Powerboat School is at Lymington Yacht Haven which like Cobbs Quay is a large marina with a huge range of craft. The Lymington river leads directly to the great cruising grounds of the Solent – a wonderful resource! Our classrooms, like Poole, are really well appointed and make a great base for a course.

Outside our classrooms in Poole we are lucky to have an excellent slipway which is really handy if we are training you on a boat that lives on a trailer as we can practice launch and recovery as many times as you want to.

In Lymington we have access to an excellent public slipway which gives us the option of training the launch and recovery aspect in a very hands on way too.

Our Instructors ~ we ensure that our instructors are teaching 100% ‘Best Practice’ and have a process whereby we constantly review their sessions to ensure that you get the most productive experience from your time with us. All teach because they love boating and we work with them to constantly ‘upskill’ their qualifications and experience.

Our history ~ we started the school over ten years ago and have grown a reputation for delivering on our promises. Our clients range from individuals with their own craft to organisations such as Sunseeker, the RNLI and we were awarded the RYA Training contract by Dorset Police for the London 2012 Olympic events in Weymouth.

We are also very proud to have written the RYA Powerboat Handbook for the RYA and 2014 saw the launch of the RYA Advanced Powerboat Handbook.

What is included in the course price? ~ When you undertake your Level 2 Course on your boat then the price you pay includes all RYA courses packs, free use of our lifejackets and waterproofs (often charged as an extra). We will send you our ‘Own boat tuition’ form in the run up to the course which will highlight the kit we’d like to see on board – we are usually able to lend you equipment from this list if required at no cost. Price includes VAT too – yet another common extra and if coming to either of our two bases there is free parking.

Ooops – almost forgot!. Included in the course price each attendee gets the RYA Start Powerboating book and can purchase a copy of the new updated RYA Powerboat Handbook for the reduced price of £15.

Does the course price represent good value? ~ remember in life you pretty much get what you pay for. We don’t pretend to be the cheapest but the course will be run by instructors guaranteed to teach current best practice. We have great facilities in large marinas offering a great all-round experience. Check out the other relevant pages on this website to see what we mean.

Some of the offers available when buying this course include…..

Special Offer No1!! Book and pay for your VHF Course at the same time as you book the Level 2 course and only pay £75 for the classroom based VHF course (including course pack). (Usual cost is £100, you also need to pay the RYA Fee which is £60). Alternatively you can choose the Online version of the VHF course for £65 – you will still need to come in for the assessment. We run VHF Courses every two weeks so fitting you in will never be an issue – we run these courses in Poole and Lymington.

Special Offer No2!! We also offer the opportunity to book the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course for a massively discounted £80 when booked alongside a Powerboat Level 2 course. This is a great course to develop your understanding of charts, tides, buoyage and navigation onto the next level after the course.

Powerboat Level 2 – training on your boat - The Course

The RYA Powerboat level 2 course is aimed both at those new to boating and those that have boated a while that want to improve their boat handling.

Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your time with him/her:

  • Boat Handling including in confined spaces.
  • Approaching and securing to a buoy
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Handling a boat at planing speed
  • Man overboard
  • Launching & recovery
  • Navigation to include charts, tides, buoyage
  • Undertaking a passage
  • The ‘Collision regulations’

The vast majority of the time on this course is spent on the water and out of the classroom.

The time that you do spend in on theory will cover: The types of craft and their respective advantages/disadvantages; engines & drives; use of power tilt & trim tabs; safety checks; personal buoyancy; awareness of other water users; application of the collision regulations (IRPCS); local bylaws; towing and being towed; communication with other craft; emergency action; distress signals; fire precautions and fire fighting and rope work.

On the second day of the course we spend time looking at charts, tides and using a compass. Using these skills we then prepare a passage plan and execute it through the harbour.

Essentially day one of the course is aimed at developing your ability to competently handle the craft in close quarter situations whilst day two develops the ability to navigate and then puts this into practice ensuring you have the ability to undertake short inshore passages.

Once you have reached the standard at which we can award the Level 2 certificate should you wish you can go on to apply for your ICC from the RYA. The relevant form can be downloaded here which coupled with a photo and a copy of your certificate will get you your licence. If you are a member of the RYA then your ICC is free else it costs approximately £43. Coincidently joining the RYA costs about the same so we would generally advise that you join then get the ICC free. If you intend travelling abroad shortly after your course and thus require your ICC to be issued quickly we advise that you join the RYA a few weeks before your course and then call the relevant department to try to ensure a quick turnaround for your application my own only took a week.

In certain situations the Level 2 certificate can be attained without attending the full course. This is known as Direct Assessment and takes half a day. (Call us if you feel that your experience is suitable and you are interested in this way of obtaining Level 2).

A further consideration when attending a level two course is where you take it. Coastal based schools award certificates with a Coastal Endorsement. This means that the student has learnt in conditions where tides and currents must be considered. Generally speaking if you intend using your boat in coastal waters ensure that you undertake a course with a coastal school.

Powerboat Level 2 – training on your boat - This course is aimed at

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course course appeals to a wide variety of individuals from those new to powerboating to those who may have boated for many years.

Some examples of the sorts of people that the Level 2 course is best suited to:

  • Those keen to understand how to get the most from their new (or new to them) boat. Training on your boat allows you to get to grips with the specific checks you should do on the boat, how it handles in wind and how best to coming alongside, tend lines etc.
  • Those new to boating keen to ensure that as they start boating they are doing it right. The course focuses on ensuring that you develop a really good base understanding of boat handling, navigation and seamanship. After the course you can then bolt on more practical experience to really cement the knowledge gained on the course.
  • Those keen to boat overseas and want to achieve their International Certificate of Competence (‘ICC’) undertake the Level 2 course which then allows them to apply for the ICC using a copy of their Level 2 certificate.
  • Those who have boated a while but never received any formal training. Level 2 ensures that you will carry on but doing it the ‘right way’ ensuring that you use the most efficient methods and with a good understanding of the ‘building blocks’ of boating. Many of the people falling into this camp tend to wonder before a course how much they will gain from the course as they have been boating so long yet after the course wonder why they never did it sooner. Indeed for some it really reinvigorates their boating leading them to seek out new places to go with a greater confidence.

Powerboat Level 2 – training on your boat - Reviews

Whatever we may think of our courses what really counts is what others think, below are a selection of comments taken directly from the Feedback Forms that we ask are filled in at the end of each course.

I will leave a Google review at some point but for now can we say a massive Thank You to PBTUK and especially Robin our trainer. He was just brilliant! Providing us with exactly what we wanted, and needed during our own boat training. It was worth every pound and we enjoyed the whole session from start to finish. Cheers Nick & Debbie (Atlantic Marine 630)
Viv – I was very pleased with the course and Robin was very professional. He also made it an enjoyable experience. It was clear throughout that he took time to do everything properly and to allow discussion as necessary. Even at the very end, he took time with me to summarise properly and without rushing. I felt as though I had achieved my personal objectives from the course. Lance
Hi Viv. Just to say thank you to Sammy today. He was brilliant with the kids and patient with me! Rosie and Id like to do the 2nd day of the course. Probably ASAP so we can keep up with what we’ve learnt today. Can we book Sam again as felt we all worked well together. Thanks, Vickie (Brig RIB 6m)
Dear Viv & Paul, Oscar and I had a terrific and very positive two days with Robin – Oscar delighted to achieve his PB level 2 – and me, ………looks as if I should now be confident and able enough for us to get in and out of our mooring!!!!!Many thanks and most grateful to you for enabling our future boating adventures! Hugh (Jeanneau Cap Camarat 9.0)
Hello Viv. A quick note while I remember to say thank you for organising the course for James and I. We enjoyed it very much and Alan was very professional and affable. I feel very confident now to take a boat out and also realize how little I knew and also how little I still know! Sammy is a very pleasant young man too. All Best Wishes. Mark Mark
Firstly, many thanks for an excellent two day course, I learnt an enormous amount and will approach our new RIB with a little less trepidation now. Alyn is an excellent teacher and adapts his approach with each student to make everyone feel comfortable. Cheers, Chris
“Hi Viv Just to let you know how fantastic we thought the training was and how useful it has proved to be. Olly was skippering our Boston Whaler on Saturday on his own and the engine cut out near Old Harry. He had to make an emergency call to the coastguard after doing all the the things he had been trained to do on the course. He didn’t panic, he carried out checks and eventually made it to Swanage where the coastguard met him and we got Sea Start to him. Between them they worked out what the problem was and he ended up racing Sea Start back to Studland 🙂 The incident is mentioned in the Echo today. He kept in touch with us by phone and we didn’t panic either because we knew he was confident and able to handle the situation. All the adults he came into contact with were really impressed with the way he handled himself and the boat. So – thank you – and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this course to anyone, whatever their age.” Cheers, Julie x
“Just wanted to write to thank you for a great course at the weekend. Alyn was incredibly patient and responded to our million and one questions with enthusiasm every time. Before buying a boat I had never realised that there were so many things to think about and now a few days on I really struggle to see how we would have managed to boat safely without doing the course.” Joe & Ann (and son Ben) after spending two days with Paul and their new 28ft Bayliner sportscruisier.
“Thanks for taking the extra time with us at weekend to help us ensure we could do the launch and recovery part of boating during our Level 2 course. It was really helpful to do it a couple of times during the weekend and if you are okay with it we will take you up on your offer of assistance the next time we come down to launch.” Jon after spending a couple of days undertaking Level 2 with his 7m RIB where we dedicated specific time to practicing launch and recovery with his vehicle/trailer/boat to ensure it was handled safely and he was happy with the process.
“An excellent course. Why would anyone who buys a new boat not do this course. ” Richard after doing his Level 2 course on his new Karnic with Drake and Joe.

I did a weeks coastal skipper course getting ready for my yacht master and I have to say it was one of the best training weeks I’ve had - our training instructor was superb, exactly the sort of person that you want. He could inspire, provide discipline and impart knowledge as well as let you learn through your own mistakes. Tom and Steph run an excellent operation there and I highly recommend it. They’re flexible and very helpful when it comes to your journey into being a qualified sailor.

frequently asked questions:

Powerboats:, how do i get a powerboat licence.

In the UK the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate is the equivalent to a powerboat licence. If you want to drive a powerboat in Europe once you've completed your RYA Powerboat Level 2 , you can then apply for an International Certificate of Competence (I.C.C.)

Do you need a licence to drive a speedboat in the UK?

No, you do not need a licence to drive a speed boat or powerboat in the UK. Tackling RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

Former rya communications officer and editor of inbrief, emma slater, shares her experience of the rya powerboat level 2 course..

Powerboat speeding through the water

I don’t profess to be an amazing sailor, but I have completed a few courses and have some sea miles under my belt. However, when it comes to power boating, I’m a complete novice.

Working for the RYA's communications team, I’m often out in RIBs working with the RYA’s video producer, interviewing boaters, and taking photos. I have watched and admired the skills of our RIB drivers as they whizz around racecourses keeping ahead of the action and manoeuvre effortlessly into what sometimes appear to be the tiniest of gaps and gently apply the throttle for a smooth ride.

After numerous outings holding on at the back, I decided it was time I got my hands on the throttle, so, along with my colleagues James and Chris, I signed up to tackle the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course to get some skills of my own.

Hear how James, Chris and I got on when we visited one of our local training centres, Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC), where our instructor Jon Kirby put us through our paces and honed our skills to claim our PB Level 2 certificates.

Why did you want to take the course?

Chris: It’s a course that I have wanted to do for a while as a sailor with access to RIBs, as it gives you an understanding of using powerboats but more importantly, for me, access to an ICC .

Emma: I wanted to take the course so that when I’m out on the water doing interviews if I needed to take control of the boat, I would know what to do. Also, I think it’s a really useful skill to have.

James: As the RYA’s video producer I’m often out in RIBs so I needed to know how to drive one in case of an emergency.

What were your expectations or concerns for the course?

Emma: I was hoping that we would have lots of time actually doing the skills. I knew there would be classroom elements to the course, but I’m a practical person and learn best by doing. My biggest concern was the possibility of doing something wrong and crashing the boat!

Chris: Truthfully, I wasn’t expecting so much hands-on experience. I was expecting a fair amount of it to be classroom based, so was surprised at the amount of time we had in the boats. I knew the course was about boat handling skills and safety, as I have friends that have done the course. The only concern was how cold the weather was going to be!

James: I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but being a novice on the water I was concerned about the pace of the course and if I’d be able to keep up with the boating terminology.

Chris and James classroom learning

Can you talk us through what you did on the course?

Chris: The course I did at SWAC was a 2-day course. Firstly, we were introduced to the RIB. We were shown around all areas of the RIB explaining what things were and what they did, but most importantly the kill cord and grab bag . After this we talked through and then launched the RIB from a trailer. It was then out on the water where we did some basic manoeuvres so we knew how the boat would handle, figure of 8’s forwards and backwards etc. Then it was into the classroom to talk about weather and first aid . From here it was back out on the boat to do some tight space handling, followed by some slow speed approaches to a mooring buoy. We also discussed COLREGS in the classroom and when we were on the water.

On the second day we were using a bigger RIB with twin engines. To start the day, as a group we did some navigation work, planning where we were going and the length of time it would take. We were then off to the RIB, where we started with some slow speed handling in confined spaces to get used to how this bigger RIB handled. It was then time to fuel up which involved tackling a lock. From here we started our passage plan and did some high-speed turns. The emphasis here was about the whole boat communicating and being part of what we were doing. After lunch we did the return passage where we did a lot of man-over-board practice. We finished our time on the water with some final coming alongside practice and close quarters handling. It was then back to the classroom for a bit of rope work.

Emma: As you can see from Chris’s account it was a pretty full on two days but great fun. Our instructor was excellent at answering any questions or concerns we had and giving us all plenty of time to really get to grips with what we were learning. One thing I did find surprising was when we launched the RIB for the first time how easy it was to push the trailer with the RIB on it and manoeuvre it to the water, easily managing to do it on my own!

James: I was pleased that before we did anything we had a briefing with our instructor so he could establish what level of experience we all had.

Instructor on a rib with students

What part of the course did you enjoy the most?

James: I loved that the course was very practical and even when you’re not driving the boat you are always busy helping the driver and learning from the instructor.

Chris: I think the most enjoyable part was all of the boat handing I did. It was great to have someone there telling you what you needed to do, but also not being so involved that you weren’t feeling that it was all in your control. Probably the best part is when you complete your first small space manoeuvre.

Emma: Much like Chris I really enjoyed the hands-on part of the course, taking control of the throttle and making the decisions about how to manoeuvre the boat, park it, and turn it around.

What elements of the course did you find difficult?

Chris: I did have a bit of difficulty doing some of the slower manoeuvres like approaching the buoy, but the more time I spent doing these, the more and more confident I got.

James: The most difficult aspect of the course for me was the rules of road, but John explained it really clearly to me and kept reinforcing what he was telling me when we were on the water which made things much easier to understand.

Chris and James on the water

Was it easier or harder than you thought?

Emma: Surprisingly I found it easier than I thought it was going to be, even when we moved into the larger RIB which did have me quite worried the first time, I saw it. But having John close by did help build my confidence.

James: It was easier than I thought. Once you have a basic understanding of piloting the RIB it then becomes more about the rules of the road and how the tide and wind will affect your passage.

Chris: I think it was harder than I was expecting, some of the slower speed handling was very difficult to start with.

What did you learn from the course?

James: Tons. It was a real eye opener.

Chris: I learnt a lot, the main thing being that you always wear a kill cord, but also some great techniques and skill of boat handling in confined spaces.

Emma: I learnt loads, especially the skills needed for manoeuvring in small spaces and bringing the boat alongside and the importance of always wearing a kill cord and communicating with others on board.

Level 2 powerboat group

Why do you think this is a good course to do?

James: I think anyone that’s thinking about putting themselves at the controls of a RIB needs to go on this course, for their own safety and the safety of their passengers.

Emma: The course gives you a really good appreciation of how important it is to know what you are doing when out on the water and build knowledge and confidence handling your boat.

Chris: It’s a great way for people to learn about using RIBs and powerboats and gain experience and knowledge that will make them safe on the water. I personally think all boat owners should have a qualification like this.

How will you be using the skills you learnt?

Emma: It means that when we have to go interview, film or photograph people on the water I can drive one of the RYA RIBs and not always have to rely on a third party to take us.

Chris: I have gained an ICC so I will hopefully be using my PB2 qualification when on honeymoon this year, but mainly, it’s to support the team when they have filming/interviewing duties on the water.

James: The general understanding I have gained from attending the course has given me the basic skills to drive the RIB and what to do in an emergency and how to avoid those situations in the first place.

Will you be doing any more PB courses?

Chris: I'm thinking about doing the Advanced or Safety Boat courses next.

What would you say to someone else thinking about taking the course?

Emma: Just do it. You’d be surprised what you can achieve in just two days. The course is full on but loads of fun and you’ll come away with loads of new skills.

Chris: Do it, it’s a lot of fun and a great way to learn something on the water in two days that gives you an internationally accepted qualification.
